SANIBONANI and Welcome to the Exceptional Zulu Kingdom KwaZulu-Natal Government focusing on growing the tourism sector WE welcome all visitors to KwaZulu-Natal as we start what promises to be an exciting year for the tourism industry in our beautiful province. From the onset, we wish to acknowledge the contribution of all sectors of society and stakeholders in the tourism sector for their contribution towards the growth of this sector.

The fact that both the President of the Republic of South Africa His Excellency Cyril Ramaphosa and the national minister of tourism Ms. Mmamoloko Kubayi-Ngubane have heaped praises on KwaZuluNatal, is an indication that we have a winning formula. Let us join hands and double our efforts to ensure that our visitors enjoy their stay in our province. In particular, as the provincial government we are encouraged by the commitment that has been shown by mayors and all other representatives from municipalities across the province. Local government is where tourism happens, and this is why local government is best placed to create a memorable experience for tourists. As set out in Chapter 7, Section 152 of the Constitution, one of the objectives of Local Government is to promote social and economic development.

Section 153 goes on to describe the developmental duties of municipalities, stating that a municipality must structure and manage its administration, budgeting and planning processes to give priority to the basic needs of the community, and to promote the social and economic development of the community. Section 153 further states that a municipality must participate in national and provincial development programmes.
Starting on the supply side, we want to enhance our destination by improving infrastructure at various tourism magnets. We want to develop skills and instill a culture of service excellence, and, through our grading system, assure quality of service and facilities. These initiatives are all aimed at enhancing the experience of tourists. We are encouraging a strong relationship with Tourist guides. They are often the first to meet our tourists, and the last to see them as they leave our province. They are our day-to-day, on-the-ground brand ambassadors. We will strengthen their capacity to deliver a memorable and enjoyable experience through training programs, including sending some of them to other countries for cultural exchanges and language training. I wish to emphasize that opportunities abound and expectations are high. Tourism must continue growing, and continue to contribute towards the national Gross Domestic Product. We are all expected to deliver by working together. 2020 World Football Summit We pause to extend warm hands of welcome to national and international delegates attending many of our events including the World Football Summit. On the 24th September 2019, I led a delegation to Madrid in Spain where we were officially presented as the next host province. Our City Durban, competed against Canada, Hong Kong in China and Buenos Aires in Argentina WFS is the international event of the football industry which brings together more than 80 countries, over 2,300 attendees and 90 speakers.
Local Tourism is also singled out in Schedule 4 (B) as one of the competency areas of local government. And also a concurrent responsibility between National and Provincial government (Schedule 4 (a)).
As we countdown to the summit, we are expected to ensure excellent transport and accommodation for a further 160 soccer clubs, leading executives, and more than 100 media houses. There is an estimation of an economic impact of about R800 million.
The Tourism Sector is a national priority sector with enormous potential to promote economic development, thus requiring of municipalities to promote it and support it.
We view this summit as a platform to showcase areas of interests for investments and leisure to the global audience of more than a billion.
I have referred to the constitution to contextualize the importance of this meeting and more specially – the importance of ensuring that mayors act as champions of tourism in their municipalities. Here in KZN we have destinations that are abundant in natural beauty, and we have diverse heritage and culture. These are things that we will continue to showcase to the national and international tourists. Our vision is to build a strong and sustainable tourism sector that improves the lives of all our people. We aim to ensure that KZN is amongst the top tourist destinations. To achieve this, we are ensuring that all municipalities play a role. We must maximize the considerable job creating potential of the sector. To achieve this, we undertake to do few things in 2020.
In preparation for many other international events, huge investment will be made in the development of infrastructure that will create a platform for a higher trajectory of growth. There are many planned infrastructure projects that will help create more job opportunities whilst giving us a competitive edge. The Durban’s Beachfront promenade is a classic example. This has generated an interest. What is exciting is that as a visitor to the Durban beachfront - can walk and cycle from the harbor mouth to Blue Lagoon. As we start 2020, I have confidence that stakeholders in the tourism sector will continue to work together with government to ensure that visitors to our province enjoy their stay. We must ensure that they sample the warmth of the people of this province who are known as the Rainbow Nation.

Follow your Heart...
But bring your brain with you!
It is not every day that students are able to follow their hearts without giving up on the essential ability to ensure academic results that will create a solid foundation for their future. In 2017 John Tungay (founder of the esteemed Drakensberg Boy’s Choir School) and Wendy Clarke opened Drakondale Girls Choir School with a grand total of 11 students in Grades 7 & 8. At the end of 2018, having rolled out to Grade 9, the decision was made to incorporate more of the performing arts and the name was changed to SCHOOL OF THE ARTS. 2020 has also seen the inclusion of boys and 2022 will see the adoption of a post matric year for boys and girls. The Drakondale Choir (which is the flagship) is of World Class Standard. In 2018, they appeared at the World Choir Games and placed FIRST in the open category for Children’s Choirs, under the baton of their esteemed Principal and Choir Master, Botes Gresse. The Choir performs regularly at concerts and is often requested to make appearances. However, Drakondale places equal emphasis on the importance of academics and offer all the normal subject choices, such as Life Sciences, Physical Science, History, and Geography. They are committed to ensuring the BEST academic results and to this end they offer SMALL classes with no more than 16 students per class, ensuring that all students receive individual attention. Sporting activities include Netball, Touch Rugby, Dance - and Athletics is being introduced this Winter. Both boarders and day scholars are welcomed, and the school in situated on a peaceful, idyllic property in the KZN Midlands.

NO DOUBT, THE BEST WAY TO VIEW WHALES AND DOLPHINS UP CLOSE IS FROM A BOAT THE ISLE OF CAPRI CRUISES offers an exhilarating 2 hour cruise into the ocean on their boat “Bafana”, to view one of the world’s most magnificent mammals, the Humpback Whale! The trip takes you into the Indian Ocean and close to the Mozambican current to encounter them at close range. All trips have friendly and fully qualified whale tour guides on board, to share their vast knowledge of the ocean and its creatures with you. Every year, from June to November, whales can frequently be seen off the KwaZulu-Natal coast on their migratory route, from the Southern Oceans to the warmer tropical waters for mating and giving birth, and on their return, heading for the nutrient rich waters of Antarctica. By law, you are not allowed to approach within 300m from a whale, unless you are aboard a boat permitted by the Department of Marine and Coastal Management. Permit holders are all members of the South African Boat-Based Whale Watching Association and as such are required to adhere to a strict code of conduct and to undergo training. The Isle of Capri Cruises boasts one of two whale watching permits awarded in Durban.
We also offer: • Hourly Harbour Cruises from 10am - 4pm (conditions apply) • Sea Cruises at 12.30pm and 2.30pm • Educational School Trips • Boat Rides • Party Cruises • Fishing

SWIMANATHI SUPPORTS CHILDREN’S WATER SAFETY! Movers and shakers in KZN’s hospitality and business sectors – uShaka Marine World, Tsogo Sun, SAAMBR, Lifesaving SA, GeoChem, Mabliza Lifestyle and Jump City – have taken a stand against accidental drownings amongst children with the launch of the Swimanathi at uShaka Marine World (USM) recently. Speaking in the wake of at least two tragic drownings of young learners at the very beginning of the 2020 academic year, USM CEO, Dr Stella Khumalo, thanked the sponsors who had once again joined forces to provide children from disadvantaged backgrounds with an opportunity to learn how to swim through the annual Swimanathi. She pointed out that, as many activities at USM focused on families and children, having fun in an aquatic environment as well as water safety were two things that were particularly important to Africa’s largest marine theme park. “We believe that it is important for uShaka Marine World, as both a brand and an iconic tourism destination in Durban, to be involved in projects that not only enhance community development but also promote safety – and water safety in particular. That’s why we have made our facilities available so that children who would not ordinarily have an opportunity to learn to swim can do so through the Swimanathi Project,” she said. The Swimanathi Project was launched in 2016 by the then MEC for Arts, Culture, Sport and Recreation Ntombikayise Sibhidla-Saphetha. To date, 520 children have been taught to swim. The rationale behind the initiative is that the majority of non-fee paying schools do not have facilities where they could learn to swim or the resources to pay teachers. As a result, many young lives are lost in tragic incidents that could be avoided. “During the height of the summer season when everyone in this seaside city is drawn to the water, we lose precious children to unnecessary and tragic drownings. That’s because so many of our children cannot swim – a symptom of the fact that children from disadvantaged
backgrounds do not get the opportunity to learn to swim even when they grow up close to the water,” Dr Khumalo noted. One such school is Addington Primary from which the majority of children taking part in the Swimanathi come. The Principal of Addington Primary, Raj Moodley, thanked all of the sponsors for their contributions and said that the school was, once again, delighted to be part of this programme. He said both the school’s governing body and parents would like to see this continue for many years to come. Children who are participating this year will be divided into groups for their swimming lessons. The lessons began over the weekend of 25 and 26 January and continue for the next 5 weekends (during the weekends of the 1, 2, 8, 9, 15, 16, 22, 23, 29 February and 1 March.) The Department of Sports and Recreation will send lifeguards, Jump City will provide the inflatables, a photographer, a videographer and medals for all the participating children while GeoChem will sponsor sunblock and Mabliza Lifestyle will pay for the child minders.
“What these children are about to learn is so important, and will never be forgotten. It is basically one of life’s most important skills, added uShaka Sea World Director and head of SAAMBR, Dr Tony McEwan. Tsogo Sun KZN Hotels proudly supports uShaka Marine World in its fourth “learn to swim” campaign aimed at reducing the high incidence of drownings in the province. As a leading leisure brand located along Durban’s Golden mile, we are passionate about this project and committed to seeing more youngsters swim safely in our beaches. Ensuring that the children were properly attired for their lessons, Tsogo Sun sponsored swim gear, towels and lunch for each participant. Gavin Kearns from Jump City agreed, saying that the the 520 children that had already learned to swim could very well be those that pay it forward and teach others how to be water safe one day. This article is sponsored Logo Graphics publishers of www-What, Where & When.
Helene Herbert from SA Lifesaving , who will sponsor the 15 instructors for the programme said the organization was also delighted to be back on board. She said the success of the project was reflected in the fact that the very same lifeguards who had acted as instructors last year, were all eager to be on board again this year.

TKZN #DoKZN Romance
They say February is the month of love… the month we celebrate Valentine’s Day. In 18th century England 14th February grew into an occasion for couples to send flowers, confectionary and greeting cards to one another. Today, nothing has changed… if anything the trend has grown into a month-long celebration of love. And where better to celebrate love than KwaZulu-Natal, with its extensive range of unique destinations, ideal for memorable experiences. the breeze rustling through the canopy at the Dlinza Forest Aerial Boardwalk. Go on an early morning bush walk and be amazed at the little duikers nibbling at the undergrowth, or a zebra as it shakes off the morning dew and watch out for the little creatures and critters as they greet the new day at one of numerous nature reserves throughout the province. Stroll through the Durban Botanic Gardens and marvel at the colours, tones and textures of our natural environment and finish off the walk with a picnic under one of the huge trees.

KZN’s High Summer entertainment roster this season is rich in options for theatre goers and music lovers alike. The KZN Philharmonic Orchestra’s Summer Season of symphony concerts runs in the Durban City Hall every Thursday between 13 February and 5 March, each concert starting at 19h30. The Japanese conductor Yasuo Shinozaki launches the season on 13 February with two concert staples by Brahms, the Tragic Overture and the Fourth Symphony, which frame Rachmaninov’s iconic Piano Concerto No 2 in C minor, played by the leading SA concert pianist, Francois du Toit.
On 20 February, American conductor William Eddins shares the spotlight with two guest soloists, the Montenegrin guitarist Goran Krivokapi and the gifted young South African soprano, Zandile Mzazi, who join the orchestra in performing a richly curated programme of concert bon-bons by Berlioz, Rodrigo, Mascagni, Massenet, Khachaturian, Delibes and Tchaikovsky. Japanese maestro Shinozaki returns for the third concert of the season on 27 February, when Beethoven’s Coriolan Overture and his magnificent Emperor Concerto, played by German pianist Jan Jiracek von Arnim, can be heard in the first half of the evening, followed by a performance of Dvorák’s immensely rewarding Symphony No 7. The Netherlands born conductor Arjan Tien makes a popular return to round off the season on 5 March, with two more Beethoven favourites, the Leonore Overture No 1 and the Triple Concerto, played by pianist, Malcolm Nay, violinist Tai Murray and cellist Aristide du Plessis. The evening closes with a performance of Bizet’s delightful Symphony in C. Season tickets for the KZN Philharmonic’s World Symphony Series 2020 Summer Season are available through Computicket. And on the chamber music front, concert goers are advised of three exciting events 20 www - WHAT, WHERE & WHEN Feb-March 2020
presented by Friends of Music at the Durban Jewish Centre. On 11 February at 19h30, The Opera Angels, a dynamic duo featuring pianist and soprano Dr Lisa Engelbrecht and mezzo soprano Lindsay Thomson perform extracts from operas, and musical theatre medleys and some surprising arrangements of popular favourites. On 25 February at 19h30, pianist Nina Watson and members of the Quattro Femmes String Quartet: Petya Koleva (Violin); Jane Baillie-Magner (Violin); Annamaria D’Andrea (Viola); Marguerite Spies (Cello) perform works by Antonin Dvoák, Sergei Rachmaninoff and Robert Schumann. Sunday 14th March (15h00) sees the Baroque group Suite 415 (Baroque Group) in action. This features some of the province’s most accomplished classical musicians: Margit Deppe (Baroque Oboe); Aristide du Plessis (Baroque Cello), David Smith (Harpsichord) and Evelien Ballantine (Baroque Flute / Traverso) in a programme of music by Telemann; Locatelli, JS Bach Sammartini. Presented by the Playhouse Company, this season’s live shows include two important schools education projects geared to impart life awareness for learners. Sizwe’s Triumph over Sumdanger, which tours between 3 and 14 February, focuses on the scourge of bullying in schools. Notebook, a dance production running from 2 to 28 February, highlights the evils of substance abuse, as it uncovers the story of a recovering alcoholic and the harrowing journey from where it all began – the very first drink. Also running at The Playhouse, following longstanding tradition, Durban’s annual Passion Play, which tells of the last days of Jesus Christ, can be seen from 24 to 31 March. And for suburban theatre goers, The ever fecund Rhumbelow chain is typically generous in its choice of live entertainment, to be seen at its popular venues in Umbilo, Kloof and
Pietermaritzburg. Titles to conjure with, among a host of others, include: Diva Lost Vegas, starring Lisa Bobbert and Marion Loudon, at Tina’s from 7 to 9 February; Not Famous starring Jem Atkins in a solo comedy show in Pietermartizburg on 8 February; and in the same venue on 9 February, Marico Moon, an evening of Herman Charles Bosman storytelling performed by Barbie Meyer. For the full range of Rhumbelow shows on offer, log onto events@durbantheatre.co.za or email roland@stansell.za.net.
And a special treat for comedy lovers, MacBob Productions present their latest musical comedy romp, Family Therapy, at the Elizabeth Sneddon theatre on the Durban campus of UKZN, from 2 to 15 March. Join Aaron McIlroy and Lisa Bobbert as they take a wild dive into the world of the family and investigate what makes them tick or explode. These comedic legends boldly go where billions have been before and hilariously investigate the dos and don’ts of living together in this strange arrangement we call family. Family Therapy guarantees to have you and your loved ones singing along and screaming with laughter not yelling at each other. Directed and choreographed by comedy ace, Daisy Spencer, Family Therapy is set to delight! So don’t delay! Get booking through Computicket!

DURBAN
DID YOU KNOW?
Durban has always held a special charm for visitors... it offers the buzz of a large metropolitan city, a vibrant mix of cultures, miles of sun-drenched beaches and a wonderfully moderate climate. It’s the perfect place for some ‘summer loving’, with beach walks, sunset cruises and romantic picnics… or for the more adventurous, horseback rides on the beach, helicopter flips or even shark cage diving! Find that perfect gift at one of Durban’s upmarket shopping centres offering brand name shops as well as quirky boutiques - or browse around a flea market to get the local vibe and ferret out a handmade treasure for your loved one. For some local authenticity and an eclectic cultural vibe pop into the Victoria Street Market with its numerous stalls selling everything from brassware, woven baskets, wooden articles to meat, fish, fruit and vegetables – the main attractions though are the exotic spices imported from India, ideal for making curries… and ideal for that special home-cooked meal. Not keen to don the apron and be chef for the night? No problem, as Durban has a variety of restaurants and eateries to choose from. Head to Florida Road for a cosmopolitan vibe of street cafes, restaurants, clubs and bars, all set within a street of carefully preserved historic buildings. Or Umhlanga with its choice of cosy and contemporary to high-rise and glitzy. If you want to add local theatre and live music to your evening, there are plenty of trendy clubs, pubs and discos where you can ‘party ‘till dawn’. Prefer a daytime outing? What about breakfast along the beachfront, a picnic at the Botanic Gardens, high tea at an upmarket hotel or sundowners on a harbour cruise.
With Durban recently awarded ‘The Greenest City in the World’ status by first Husqvarna Urban Green Space Index, you’re positively spoilt for choice when it comes to finding that green space to get away from it all and enjoy some time in nature. From more conventional spaces like local parks and gardens to wilder and more untamed suburban nature reserves such as the popular Krantzkloof Nature Reserve in Kloof, the Kenneth Stainbank Nature Reserve in Yellow Wood Park and the Bluff Nature Reserve in the Bluff. Closer to the ocean there’s the Beachwood Mangroves Nature Reserve just north of the Umgeni River, the Umhlanga Lagoon Nature Reserve at the northern end of the Umhlanga promenade and, also in Umhlanga, the Hawaan Forest. Durban’s beachfront and promenade are always a drawcard for visitors to the city, and there’s no better spot to kick off the month of love. Start with a sunrise picnic and walk along the beach, followed by a dip in the warm Indian Ocean. Cycle or take a walk along the promenade and stop for coffee or an ice-cream. Enjoy some locally inspired cuisine at The Joint, book a spa treatment at one of the beachfront hotels followed by sundowners on the Moyo pier as you watch the sun set over the city skyline.
The Bluff Nature Reserve is Durban’s oldest nature reserve and was proclaimed in 1974. It is 45 hectares in extent and consists of a large pan, lake and a small area of coastal lowland forest. There is a self-guided trail which meanders around the pan as well as two bird hides providing excellent bird watching opportunities.

PIETERMARITZBURG / MIDLANDS The days are still wonderfully warm, and love seems to be the air, so there’s no better time to head into the forested hills and rolling countryside of the KwaZulu-Natal Midlands and book into one of the many romantic stops along the way. This is a great time of year to enjoy the fascinating mix of arts and crafts, artisanal produce, sublime spas and world-class restaurants – or shake off the festive season excess by getting active with one of the many adventurous pursuits on offer in the region. The KZN Midlands offers a wealth of outdoor adventure activities for visitors to enjoy, from trail running and hiking, to mountain biking, horse riding and paddling. The Karkloof Canopy Tour offers adrenalin junkies a rush as you whizz past towering trees, cliff faces dotted with orchids and over a pristine forest floor. Not wanting to break out a sweat, then pick up a Midlands Meander map and explore some of the routes offering visitors easy directions to a wealth of fabulous cuisine, historic landmarks and artist studios. Enjoy the scenic drive and stop off to visit the studios of talented potters and artists, weavers and leather crafters. Browse for collectables and organic produce or stop for coffee and cake at one of the many spots along the way. Or make special memories as you watch the sun rise from a wicker basket as you soar above the rolling hills and agricultural fields in a hot air balloon and toast the experience with a glass of bubbly. Be sure to pop into the Mandela Capture Site to view the remarkable sculpture that marks the place where former president, Nelson Mandela was captured. Alongside the sculpture is a temporary exhibition telling the story of Nelson Mandela’s journey from comrade, leader, prisoner and negotiator to statesman. Or how about a romantic spa weekend away for two? Breathe in the scent of essential oils as hands massage away the stress of a working

week, relax in a bath of bubbles and step out refreshed and renewed. There are several destination spas to choose from that offer special spa packages that include signature treatments, delicious dining and fabulous hospitality. Additionally, visitors are spoilt for choice with a wide variety of accommodation to choose from – from quaint country guest houses and B&B’s to luxury country hotels and even farm-stays. Just what you need to treat your significant other. The months of February and March have several sporting events to inspire you to fulfil those dreaded exercise resolutions… beginning with the Midmar Mile (8-9 February), one of the world’s largest open-water events. Midmar Dam is the venue for this this epic event that sees thousands from all walks of life swimming the ‘mile’ across the dam. This is followed by the Dusi Canoe Marathon (27-29 February) another epic event that sees paddlers racing from the starting point on the uMsundusi River at Camps Drift in Pietermaritzburg and finishing on the uMngeni River in Durban three days later. Should running be more your style, there’s the Capital City Marathon (23 February) and the Umgeni Water Marathon (29 March) as well as several trail running and mountain biking events in the area (see the diary section for dates).
The metal sculpture at the Mandela Capture Site consists of 50 laser cut steel columns between that gradually come together and focus at a point 30m from the sculpture creating the illusion of a flat two-dimensional image recreating Madiba’s portrait. Walk closer and the image once more becomes a forest of steel columns.

ELEPHANT COAST
DID YOU KNOW?
The Elephant Coast, region includes several reserves, including the Hluhluwe-iMfolozi Game Reserve, uMkhuze Game Reserve, some private game reserves as well as the iSimangaliso Wetland Park which was South Africa’s first proclaimed World Heritage Site. It stretches from Kosi Bay to about 20km south of Maphelane and extends from the Lubombo Mountains in the west to the warm Indian Ocean in the east, and from Mozambique in the north to the iMfolozi River in the south, it offers visitors every changing views of a wide variety of biodiversity and landscapes. Besides amazing game viewing and bird watching, iSimangaliso Wetland Park offers a choice of wonderful opportunities for the romantically inclined. Enjoy a picnic in the presence of hippos at Lake Bhangazi on the Grassland Loop, Eastern Shores, or a sheltered braai at the shady picnic site at Mission Rocks (away from the beach but you can still hear and feel the ocean breeze). Or what about a romantic sunset boat cruise on the estuary – opt for one of the smaller operators and organize a picnic hamper for the occasion. Other sundowner options include Sunset Jetty in St Lucia (which is free and in walking distance from town) or a sunset drive on the Western or Eastern Shores to catch the golden hour. The Park gates close at 7pm until the end of March so towards the end of that month one can catch a sunset and head back before closure without rushing - Catalina Bay viewing deck on the Eastern Shores or the uMthoma Aerial Boardwalk on the Western Shores are the best. If you’re in Kosi Bay, then head to the wooden jetty at Kosi Bay’s Lake Nhlange (Third lake) where, on a good day, you are rewarded with a full 360 degrees of brilliance. There’s nothing like a romantic walk for two... take a stroll through the filtered light of the iGwalagala Trail in St Lucia where the coastal forest is alive with birdsong and you might spot a duiker, bushbuck or even a wandering hippo
or walk one of several trails in the Nature Park section of the Eastern Shores (both these are free of entry fees). Enjoy a beach walk from Mission Rocks southwards towards Perrier’s Rocks – about 3km to reach the three gorgeous half-moon bays where one can snorkel and then picnic. Or head north from Mission Rocks towards Bat Cave and take a dip in shallow rock pools – it is important to do this at low tide! The beach at Cape Vidal is lovely to walk, swim and snorkel. At Sodwana Bay, the walkway from Mseni Lodge to the beach goes through gorgeous coastal forest opening out onto a pristine, mostly unpopulated beach. Mabibi beach is great! Splurge on luxury at Thonga Beach Lodge or go camping at Mabibi community campsite next door (or take one of the three self-catering tented chalets) – same gorgeous beach experience! Further north, the Kosi Bay mouth, Bhanga Nek and Black Rock beaches are all remote and beautiful. The Fig Forest Aerial Boardwalk in uMkhuze Game Reserve offers a guided walk (to protect against elephants, lions, buffalo and other potentially dangerous game) through a magical landscape of soaring, ancient sycamore figs and other riverine forest species. Enjoy the chorus of birdsong while restoring your soul in the forest, or head to the iNsumo Pan for a picnic with a hippo chorus.
iSimangaliso boasts one of the most significant populations of Nile crocodile in Southern Africa and in a recent aerial count, the density of basking crocodiles in one section was recorded as the equivalent of 99 individuals per kilometre! There are in excess of 1000 adult crocodiles living wild in the Park, predominantly in the Lake St Lucia estuarine system.

WHAT, WHERE & WHEN
ZULULAND Zululand is a place where breath-taking hills and valleys are matched by estuaries and beautiful beaches; where traditional royal hunting grounds are now pristine game reserves teeming with wildlife and where heartfelt hospitality and Zulu traditions are experienced. Lose yourself in the wilds of a nature reserve, along a stretch of beach or on the back of a game viewing vehicle. Start your Zululand experience at the Umlalazi Nature Reserve in Mtunzini for wonderful opportunities to experience both land and water… canoe and fish in the estuaries, take romantic strolls along the beautiful beach, swim in the sea, spot wonderful birdlife and a variety of small game in the coastal forest. Lunch for two? Then pop into the Zini Forest Pub & Grill where the deck spills out into the forest and you become immersed in nature. Or head inland on Route 66 one of the oldest trade routes through Zululand between Gingindlovu and Phongolo. Settlers in Port Natal (now Durban) would set off in ox-wagons on wellworn tracks into the heart of the Zulu Kingdom to hunt and trade, stopping first for permission to do so from the Zulu king. Thankfully it’s much easier these days as the roads are good and there are B&Bs and guest houses aplenty. If you are looking for a romantic walk on the` wildside’, surrounded by birdsong, beautiful indigenous forest giants and colourful butterflies, you need look no further than the Dlinza Forest Aerial Boardwalk in Eshowe, one-and-a half hours from Durban and an hour from Ballito. This magical wooden walkway will take you high up under the canopy of the trees, and lead you to a 20m high viewing tower, where many a romantic proposal has taken place. Picnic areas bordering the forest are visited by shy blue duiker, to add to this unique experience.
Wanting something a little wilder? Then head to the Hluhluwe–iMfolozi Park, the oldest proclaimed nature reserve in Africa, and home to the Big Five and a variety of other game – should you choose to be a little more pampered, then there are also several private reserves that stock the Big Five. Head on early morning drives just as the sun rises and be treated to a coffee break or breakfast in the bush or perhaps just laze at the pool or enjoy a spa treatment before the afternoon game drive. Marvel at the skills of your ranger and guide as they follow the tracks of a rhino or leopard and enjoy sundowners on a ridge overlooking the expansive views over the Zululand bushveld. Be treated to fabulous cuisine, or perhaps even a bush braai, and some authentic Zulu song and dance. Add some adventure with a guided bush walk or rhino tracking, and if you’re in the Phongola Game Reserve, some tiger fishing! The Phongolapoort Dam (also known as Lake Jozini) is home to the ferocious tiger fish, the southernmost point in Africa where they can be found. Add some game viewing to your boat fishing and keep a look out for elephants frolicking along the edges of the dam, crocodiles lazing on sandbanks and African spoonbills wander through the shallow waters. This is just one of the sought-after birding spots on the Zululand Birding Route.

The Eshowe dwarf chameleon (Bradypodion caeruleogula) is only found in three small forest patches in and around Eshowe – Ntumeni, Dlinza and Ongoya. This cute little critter is considered ‘vulnerable’ on the Threatened Species list for reptiles in part due to illegal collection for the international pet trade – they are also preyed upon by tree snakes, shrikes and starlings and their young by spiders.

BATTLEFIELDS The Battlefields region offers picturesque landscapes with rolling plains, rocky hills, undulating valleys and a concentration of historical battle sites. Rock strewn hills and fields littered with graveyards and the remains of fortifications are memorials to the battles that took place over numerous years shaping both South African and British history. This region however does not only play host to countless monuments and well-preserved artefacts, its hills and valleys are home to sporting and adventure activities, game reserves, art and crafts as well as golf courses and hot springs. There are opportunities for adventure, from white water rafting and mountain biking, to less strenuous activities like game viewing or a round of golf. Nature reserves abound offering great opportunities to get outdoors and enjoy nature’s splendour. The Vryheid Hill Nature Reserve is home to a number of endemic bird species, including the blue cane, ground woodpecker and olive bush-shrike, is a delight to bird watchers - in addition to great birding and incredible scenery, the Reserve offers a one-day hiking trail that passes several gun points dating back to the Anglo-Boer War. The Utrecht Balele Community Game Park, nestling in a corner of the Balele mountains, completely surrounds the town of Utrecht. This has led to it being known as the ‘town within a game park’ and from time to time blesbuck, impala and even zebra have been known to wander through the town. There are several guided walks and game drives through the reserve as well as bird watching, hiking, horse trails and trout fishing – both on dams and on the Bivane River. Want to add some water sports and activities into your plans? Then the Chelmsford Nature Reserve near Newcastle is ideal. The reserve surrounds the Ntshingwayo Dam (KZN’s third largest, previously known as the Chelmsford Dam) located on the iNgagane River. This
1 000-hectare reserve is well stocked with highveld game and game viewing and bird watching are particularly rewarding. In addition to boating, water-skiing, swimming and fishing on the dam, self-drives, guided game drives and even mountain biking and walking are popular activities in the reserve. Bird watchers will appreciate the region’s Amajuba Birding Meander which is particularly rewarding for species where ‘grassveld meets the berg’ and nearly 400 species of bird have been identified along it. Make some special memories with a Big Five experience at the Nambiti Game Reserve near Ladysmith. With its rolling grasslands and wetlands to riverine bush and thornveld, and 45 species of game, including cheetah, giraffe, hippo, hyena, impala, eland and zebra in addition to the Big Five, it offers thrilling game viewing. Make memories as you and your significant other indulge in sundowners in the bush, delicious cuisine as well as sublime spa treatments at one of the Reserve’s luxurious lodges. In addition to fabulous game viewing and bird watching, Nambiti’s location is ideal for exploring the nearby Anglo-Boer War memorial sites, with gravesites of soldiers that had been killed in the Battle of Elandslaagte in October 1899 on the reserve itself.

DID YOU KNOW?
Take some time out and enjoy the lush sub-tropical coastline and warm Indian Ocean waters of KwaZulu-Natal’s North Coast. This unspoilt natural environment is blessed with rocky shores, golden beaches and sheltered coves perfect for sun, surf, fishing or snorkelling. Discover romance at exclusive lodges set within the coastal forest, offering five-star luxury, sublime spa experiences and fabulous cuisine – all perfect for that special occasion with a loved one. Take an early morning boat trip and watch as the sun makes its way over the horizon and perhaps have an encounter with dolphins - the namesake of this, the Dolphin Coast. Stoll along soft sandy shores and take a dip in the warm Indian Ocean, or if you prefer, explore the rocky shores and tidal pools that offer a glimpse of the underwater life that is often only seen by those donning wetsuits and scuba gear. Feel the wind in your hair as you canter along the beach on horse-back, or the thrill of getting a birds-eye view of the coast from a microlight. Pack a picnic and explore the pristine estuaries and coastal forest at one of the many nature reserves, play a round of golf at one of the regions championship golf courses or seek out one of the many adventure activities on offer in the region. Experience a breath-taking offroad ride on a quad, or mountain bike – venture through sugar cane fields, along scenic rivers and magnificent cliff faces, into muddy areas, over log bridges, narrow bush paths and up rocky hill climbs. Take a walk on the wild side at the Harold Johnson Nature Reserve which has a selection of hiking trails and the possibility of seeing zebra, giraffe, a variety of antelope as well as a rich variety of birdlife. For something
slightly swisher head to the Rain Farm Game Lodge either a sunrise or sundowner game drive complete with snacks and drinks. Several small towns and villages dot this coastline each with its own special offering... be sure to check out the natural paradise of the Zinkwazi lagoon, perfect for a beach picnic; Tongaat, the oldest Indian community in South Africa where you can sample some fabulous culinary delights and shop up a storm for fabulous saris and Salt Rock, where trendy coffee shops, like Salt Café at the Litchi Orchard meet tradition with a classic carvery at the Salt Rock Hotel. Find some five-star luxury at the Fairmont Zimbali Resort where a round of golf can be followed by a fabulous spa treatment and delicious dining. Don’t forget to immerse yourself in a bit of history at the Luthuli Museum and visit the burial place of Shaka the great Zulu King, at KwaDukuza. The KZN North Coast is certainly a multicultural infusion of traditional Zulu history and the pioneering spirit of the early European and Indian settlers – a kaleidoscope of culture, nature and adventure… with a little romance on the side.
There are two national monument found within the boundaries of the Harold Johnson Nature Reserve – Fort Pearson and the Ultimatum Tree. In 1879 the British presented an ultimatum to the Zulu nation at the Ultimatum Tree on the banks of the Tugela River; this ultimatum precipitated the Anglo Zulu War, and Fort Pearson is where the British were garrisoned at that time.

UKHAHLAMBA
DID YOU KNOW?
DRAKENSBERG The spectacular Drakensberg mountain range, with its 3 000-metre high jagged peaks, was named ‘Ukhahlamba’ by the Zulu people and ‘The Dragon Mountain’ by the Dutch Voortrekkers. This 243 000-hectare mountainous region from its high escarpment to the rolling hills beneath has been declared a World Heritage Site for both its unspoilt natural environment and its wealth of ancient San rock paintings. Memorable experiences and activities await, from the adrenalin rush of tubing down the mighty Thukela to a romantic spa treatment followed by a sundowner as the sun sets over a spectacular mountain scene. The high peaks, rolling hills and crystal-clear streams, make the Drakensberg an ideal place for exploration. Adrenalin junkies can experience the thrills of scaling the high peaks, whilst families can take the gentler strolls among the flowers and grasses and pause awhile to appreciate the beauty of the surroundings. Look out for sunbirds as they flit around looking for pollen, troops of baboons going about their daily foraging and the majestic eland as it graces the hillsides. Pack a picnic to enjoy as you cool off with a dip in a pool or river, then rest awhile and cast your gaze sky-ward and watch the enormous lammergeier (bearded vultures) as they fly overhead. When in the Drakensberg there are a variety of options for you to treat your significant other to some delicious dining. Choose from one of the several coffee shops, restaurants and country inns where you can enjoy delicious pastries and cappuccinos, country cuisine and even fabulous fine dining. Self-catering and want to try your hand in the kitchen, then no problem as there is a wealth of home-grown artisanal produce that will give you all the inspiration you need. Try the wine tasting and a picnic at Cathedral wines, and if craft beer is more your thing, opt for a beer tasting at the Drakensberg Brewery.
Seek out ancient Bushman rock art, evidence of the San people who lived in the area long time ago – the earliest of these paintings are about 800 years old with the golden age being between 400 and 200 years ago. No time to hike up to a secluded cave. Then check out the collection of San artefacts and insightful interpretation of their life at the Himeville Museum. Visitors to the Drakensberg are spoilt for choice when it comes to activities – with everything from a round of golf, horse-riding, trout fishing and even paragliding, hot air balloon rides and helicopter flips available. Treat your loved one to a scenic helicopter flight along the mountains and to make it even more memorable organise to stop for a glass of bubbly or even a high-altitude picnic. When it comes to mountain peaks, the spectacular Amphitheatre, which is possibly the most photographed feature of the northern Drakensberg, is a must. Hike up to the source of the Thukela River, and watch as it plunges some 950 metres over the edge of the Montaux-Sources Plateau in spectacular fashion. Or if you’d prefer to reach your ‘peak’ by vehicle, then take a 4X4 along the upper Mkomazana River up Sani Pass to the border with Lesotho (2874 metres above sea-level) and enjoy lunch for two at the highest pub in Africa.
In 1978 the Himeville Museum was recognised as a National Monument. The building was originally constructed in 1899 as a prison and operated as such until 1972, after being abandoned for four years it was turned into a museum housing and impressive collection of exhibits. It is one considered one of the top rural museums in South Africa.

SOUTH COAST
DID YOU KNOW?
With its sub-tropical weather, blue lagoons and golden beaches, the South Coast is the destination of choice when it comes to anything from romantic interludes to adrenalin adventures. In addition to a myriad of beach activities, visitors to this region can enjoy golf, hiking, mountain biking, diving, whale watching and almost everything in-between. The KZN South Coast, with its coastal and riverside locations nestled within lush, indigenous vegetation, boasts a wide variety of idyllic settings, perfect for a much-needed romantic break. Enjoy an early morning stroll along any of the 39 golden beaches, laze in the sunshine and enjoy an icy milkshake to cool off. Swim in the warm Indian Ocean or take a boat offshore – watch out for dolphins frolicking in the waves or go diving and experience the underwater wonders at the region’s world or head to class diving sites. The famous Protea Banks reef, one of the few places in the world where you can dive with a variety of sharks. Head further down the coast to the beautiful beaches at Shelley-, St Michaels- and Uvongo Beach. Then there’s Margate, considered the holiday centre of the South Coast, and renowned for its exciting night life and fabulous festivals, and Ramsgate for its waffle house and picturesque lagoon – ideal for a teatime treat for two. Unwind and enjoy outdoor activities – mountain biking, trail running, tennis and swimming at the ANEW Ingeli Forest Lodge, nestled below the Ingeli Mountains and surrounded by lush indigenous forests. Or head to the Umtamvuna Nature Reserve where you can relax with sound of fish eagles and waterfalls and walk along one of the many marked trails – pack a picnic basket to make it extra special. The Oribi Gorge Nature Reserve is one of KZN’s most spectacular natural settings with its deep gorge, dramatic cliff faces, lush forests and picturesque river. For a luxurious romantic experience head to The Gorge Private Game
Lodge & Spa with its fabulous cuisine, sublime spa offering and expansive views over the gorge. A day trip to Lake Eland Game Reserve offers an abundance of plains game, mountain biking, hiking and even options for a romantic picnic along a stream surrounded by ancient trees. The more adventurous will enjoy a thrilling ride on the Zip Line, but for a slightly less adrenalin filled experience opt for a guided scooter tour and a walk across the suspension bridge to a wonderful view site known as the Eagle’s Nest and offers spectacular views across the gorge. Immerse yourself in the natural habitats of the Vernon Crookes Nature Reserve with some 56 mammal and more than 300 confirmed bird species, including the African broadbill, Narina trogon and orange ground thrush. This region also boasts a variety of culturally immersive hinterland tours and experiences, including the recently launched KwaNzimakwe MultiTrail Park, one of the ‘Great Drives Out’ routes.
