This year, we celebrated under the theme “Tourism, the digital transformation” with the aim of focusing attention on the role that technology has played in the tourism sector. We continue to encourage our tourism partners to embrace the phenomenon in order to stay on top of mind to our consumers. Research has shown that potential travellers are now opting to use the internet to search for holiday destinations. They use website content to solidify their travel plans and want to know if a hotel has Wi-Fi, which then becomes a deciding factor on whether to book or not. Travellers are now using APPs to navigate through destinations with ease. We also celebrated the provincial LILIZELA TOURISM AWARDS at Underberg where the MEC for Economic Development, Tourism and Environmental Affairs, Mr Sihle Zikalala, awarded 32 “Best of the Best” players in the tourism sector who exceeded expectations to give KZN visitors an excellent and memorable service. These provincial winners will go now on to represent KZN at the national Tourism Awards hosted by the Minister of Tourism on 17 November at the Sandton Convention Centre. This year, we are also celebrating the MANDELA CENTENARY and we’ve had a number of initiatives to promote the icon’s footsteps in KZN. We have shared some of our major tourism attractions such as the Luthuli Museum, the Ohlange Institute and the Mandela Capture Site with a number of provincial, national and international media and trade partners. We continue to aggressively market KZN as a “mustsee” domestic tourism destination through our ongoing “Do KZN” campaign.

We recently visited Gauteng as our biggest domestic source market for KZN outside of the province. We
participated at the GAUTENG GETAWAY SHOW and also joined forces with Durban Tourism on a 10day consumer activation at Sandton Mall. We will be rolling out the campaign in other parts of the country. In our efforts to also embrace the digital space, we have created a Virtual Reality portal where potential travellers can get a taste of some of our tourism offerings while they ponder which destination will be home for them this festive season. We continue to promote our KZN APP; the KZN Travel Guide. The APP is available for free on iStore and Google Play and it assists travellers with all the information they will need to navigate through the province with ease, whether they are looking for accommodation, restaurants, tourism attractions and beach spots. We are also excited to welcome the inaugural direct BA FLIGHT between Durban and London at the end of October. We are confident that this will also open new international markets for the province and will see more international arrivals descending on the province. We can safely say that we are expecting a profitable festive season, and trust that our trade partners are ready to welcome our visitors with the warmth and hospitality for which the province of KZN is renowned. A blonde, chic Parisienne, Françoise never expected to find herself living on a South African game reserve. But when she fell in love with renowned conservationist Lawrence Anthony her life took an unexpected turn. Lawrence died in 2012 and Françoise was left to face the tough reality of running Thula Thula without him, even though she knew very little about conservation. She was short on money, poachers were threatening their rhinos, and one of their elephants was charging Land Rovers on game drives and terrifying guests. There was no time to mourn when Thula Thula’s human and animal family were depending on her. Their elephant herd, rescued by Lawrence, shared Françoise’s grief at his passing but over time forged a new relationship with her. One day a baby, Tom, became separated from the herd and found his way into Françoise’s kitchen. SPOTLGHT ON ENTERTAINMENT Durban’s RHUMBELOW THEATRE has an enticing line-up on offer this season in both its Durban and Kloof venues. Top of the pops is Grandpa Grump and the Magical Junk Shop, Neil Coppen’s fun entertainment for children of all ages, from four to 400! Starring Straw Nzimande, with ace magician Ricki Grey cranking up the wizardry, this plays at the Rhumbelow’s newly revamped Umbilo venue, 42 Cunningham Rd, off Bartle Rd, from 1 to 5 October at 11am. Show running time: +- 55 minutes. There will be some fun colouring in afterwards for the kids and a colouring in competition. Snacks and juices will be on sale. Other titles to conjure with, among the Rhumbelow’s slew of back-by-popular-demandventures, include among others: ‘Ello, ‘Ello, ‘Ello - a ‘British Pub Night’ starring Dave Monks, at Tina’s Hotel, 14 Beryldene Rd, Kloof on 5 and 6 October at 8pm and 7 October and 2pm; and

The 22nd annual Poetry Africa Festival takes place at UKZN’S ELIZABETH SNEDDON THEATRE and other venues around Durban from 15 to 20 October. The programme features performances, readings and book-launches from some of the world’s most diverse poets every evening. The festival includes the popular Durban Slam Jam and festival finale features all the poets in the fest. Veteran satirist Pieter-Dirk Uys hits the return button in KZN this month with his latest entertainment concoction, When in Doubt, Say Darling! This can be seen at the HEXAGON THEATRE IN PIETERMARITZBURG on 30 and 31 October, and 6 and 7 November, and the ELIZABETH SNEDDON THEATRE in Durban from 1 – 4 November and 8 to 11 November. Join Uys as he sorts out 40 years of distress, disguise and disgust: from apartheid to tripartite, from amandla to Nkandla - and happily back to amandla. Also hitting the return season circuit is the inveterate Tim Plewman, who yet again dons his Caveman’s skins to add to his record breaking string of Defending the Caveman performances. Plewman makes two KZN lightning-stop appearances - at THE HEXAGON THEATRE, Pietermaritzburg on Friday, 2 November, and at BLACK ROCK TSOGO SUN IN NEWCASTLE on Saturday, 2 November. The Playhouse Company has a wide variety of live entertainment in the offing. This includes among other attractions, an entrance-free Community Arts Festival, showcasing some 20 community based productions, which runs in the LOFT THEATRE between 5 and 22 October; a series of free Sundowner concerts every Friday through October, starting at 5pm; and an enchanting stage adaptation of Alice in Wonderland, playing in THE DRAMA THEATRE on 13 and 14 October. DID YOU KNOW? Durban has a wealth of Victorian and Edwardian style buildings thanks to it being a proclaimed British colony under Queen Victoria. There are several beautiful examples of these grand old mansions in the Berea and Morningside area – one with a fascinating story is that of the Elephant House (745 Peter Mokaba (Ridge) Road), so named because the elephants that roamed the area used to pass close by the house occasionally causing damage to the veranda posts. It dates back to 1849, was the first house to be built on the Berea, is the oldest house in Durban and is now a B&B.

The Outer West area of the city of Durban extends from Kloof inland and includes the beautiful Valley of 1000 Hills, up the winding and picturesque Botha’s Hill. Botha’s Hill, midway between the beaches of Durban and the KwaZulu-Natal provincial capital Pietermaritzburg, enjoys the most commanding views on the coastal side of the Drakensberg. At about 800m above sea level, you can see the snow-capped peaks of the berg and the ships on the Indian Ocean. Overlooking the world-famous Valley of 1000 Hills with its living Zulu museum and many other cultural and natural attractions, Botha’s Hill is on the route of the Comrades Marathon and Dusi Canoe Race. Named after Carolina Botha who opened the first inn there in 1849 to cater to wagoners, Botha’s Hill has maintained this spirit of hospitality. Pietermaritzburg, named after Boer settlers Pieter Retief and Gert Maritz, offers visitors a wonderful blend of history, culture and craft. Five years after establishing Pietermaritzburg, however, the Boers succumbed to British military might leaving their well-planned city to be stamped with Edwardian and Victorian architecture. Today these architectural gems sit beside vendors and hawkers and streets abuzz with taxis, giving it a real African vibe. The Pietermaritzburg City Hall, rebuilt in 1895 after fire ravaged the original building, is said to be the largest brick building in the southern hemisphere - and is the starting point of the Tsogo Sun Amashova Durban Classic 2018. The reserve has been recognized as a wetland of international importance and has been designated as the country’s 21st RAMSAR site because of its significant biodiversity and ecosystem ‘service value’ – the fact that it is an important water source.

BATTLEFIELDS Heading inland and wondering what to do? Take a detour off the N3TC as it heads through picturesque landscapes with rolling plains, rocky hills, undulating valleys and a concentration of historical battle sites. The R602, which links Ladysmith to Dundee, offers budding photographers the opportunity to capture untamed wild beauty of rising hills covered with thorn trees, aloes and riverine bushland as it passes us by. Pause awhile at the rock-strewn hills and fields littered with graveyards and the remains of fortifications that are memorials to the battles that took place over numerous years shaping both South African and British history. October commemorates the start of the Anglo Boer War, on the 11 October 1899, and the many battles the followed. With the outbreak of war, a detachment of British troops was sent from Ladysmith, where they were concentrated, to Dundee. The decision to hold and defend Dundee was based on the political need ensure a supply of bunker coal for the British ships calling at Durban harbor – something that the Dundee coal mines owners used to their advantage. On the 30 October, the British force remaining in Ladysmith decided to launch a sortie against Boer armies… something that didn’t end well. It resulted in the Siege of Ladysmith, a lengthy battle taking place from 2 November to 28 February the following year. The Ladysmith Siege Museum on Murchison Street is housed in a building built in 1884 as a market house, which then served as a ration post for civilians during the siege. The comprehensive display of memorabilia, maps, uniforms and interpretive panels as well as the historical walkabout offers visitors a glimpse of life at that time. On arrival in Dundee, be sure to head to the Talana Museum – especially if you can time your visit
over the weekend of 19-21 October. The museum, which is set on 20 acres of heritage park with 47 buildings to explore, is set to come alive with the sound Scottish bagpipes, Highland games, vintage and veteran cars as well as battle reenactments. And if this weren’t enough, there’s the Mine Walkers Tour, a 5km walk in memory of the 7000 Zulu mine workers who walked back to Natal at the outbreak of the Anglo Boer war in October 1899; and the Talana Ghost Walk on the 19th October which follows the footsteps of British soldiers in a guided walk up Talana Hill. On the night of the 19th the Boers had taken up positions on Talana Hill, and the following morning rained shells onto the British camp who retaliated – the ensuing battle, known as the Battle of Talana Hill, had the British eventually taking a tactical victory as the Boers retreated. Battles aside, there’s much to keep visitors entertained, from white water rafting and mountain biking, to less strenuous activities like game viewing, or a round of golf. And don’t miss the chance of ‘ticking’ one of the nearly 400 species of bird that have been identified along the Amajuba Birding Meander.
DID YOU KNOW? Passing through Ladysmith one cannot miss the Soofie Masjid Mosque, which sits on the banks of the Klip River. Did you know that it is considered one of the most beautiful mosques in the Southern Hemisphere? The original mosque was built in 1898 out of wood and iron, however, it was replaced with the current mosque in 1969 by master builder ‘Chacha’ Jamaloodeen.

NORTH COAST The KwaZulu-Natal’s North Coast is also known as the Dolphin Coast due to the frequent sightings of bottlenose dolphins which can often be seen frolicking in the waves from many of the secluded bays and golden beaches. Pretty coastal holiday towns like Ballito, Salt Rock, Umdloti and Zinkwazi bask in sunshine-filled days with perfect swimming and surfing conditions, and a collection of tidal pools and excellent fishing spots. And the patches of natural coastal forest give way to endlessly rolling hills covered with sugarcane. The North Coast offers luxury, beauty, sport and history, and is a place to indulge the senses… see a bottlenose dolphin for the first time; taste the spicy foodstuffs of the large Indian community that has made this region home; touch the fine detail of hand crafted art; smell the subtle fragrance of lemon grass as you relax at a spa; hear the sounds of sea gulls as you stroll along the beach… and that’s just on the first day. Explore pristine estuaries and coastal forest at one of the many nature reserves. Adventurous activities abound, from quad biking through the sugar cane fields and horse riding on the beach to taking a flip along the magnificent coastline by microlight. One natural highlight in the region at this time of year is the arrival of the European Barn Swallows. It is an incredible sight to witness up to 3 million of these tiny migratory birds as gather together about half an hour before sunset, flying in their vast numbers over the Wetlands in Mount Moreland. An opportunistic Bat Hawk or Sooty Falcon may even be spotted swooping in for a quick bite during the evening display! As dusk falls, the swallows suddenly drop into the reed-beds to roost and are gone. Enjoy an evening picnic or a few sundowners at the Lake Victoria Conservancy in Mount Moreland and witness this a spectacular natural event, with mid-November being the best time.
DID YOU KNOW? Barn swallows enjoy a perpetual summer – breeding between late April and August in the Northern hemisphere summer, then heading south to enjoy the Southern hemisphere summer. Whilst in transit, the swallow eats and drinks ‘on the wing’, making its migration of thousands of kilometres across the globe quite an extraordinary feat.

DRAKENSBERG The Drakensberg is not only one of the world’s finest examples of an erosional mountain but is a significant Southern African escarpment. It borders the mountain Kingdom of Lesotho and three South African provinces namely, parts of the Eastern Cape, KwaZulu-Natal and Mpumalanga. It stretches for some 1,000km. The most ruggedly beautiful portion of this mountain is found in KwaZulu-Natal, and a section of this is a world heritage site, which is known as the uKhahlamba Drakensberg Park. This park is one of just over 20 world heritage sites that achieved their status, on two counts, namely: Cultural-Heritage – the uKhahlamba Drakensberg Park, has more than 30,000 examples of San or Bushman rock art. Some refer to it as the ‘greatest repository of rock art’; and Fauna and Flora – there are over 300 plant and animals that are endemic to this area. The KwaZulu-Natal section of the Drakensberg are divided into three sections, namely the northern, central and southern portions. All are equally stunning and worth a visit. The mountain peaks in this area often exceed 3,000 metres. Some of the most well-known being Rhino Peak, Injasuti, Champagne Castle, Cathkin Peak, Cathedral Peak, The Saddle, The Mnweni Needles, the Devils Tooth, the Buttress, the Amphitheatre and the Sentinel. The Drakensberg also has the second highest waterfall, the uThukela Falls, and as recorded in the Guinness Book of World Records. The highest being the Angel Falls in Brazil. A visit to the northern Drakensberg is never complete without an attempt at the Amphitheatre climb, which can be accessed from the Sentinel car park. To get to the top of the mighty Amphitheatre, two sets of arduous chain ladders would need to be tackled before you are launched into panorama heaven…remember to complete the mountain register for safety purposes. We highly recommend hiring an experienced mountain guide, who can assist with the sudden changes in weather, route, geology, and fauna and flora on the mountain.
It is little wonder that tourism developers continue to flock to this area, to develop some of the finest resorts, lodges and smaller facilities in the country, such as country houses and self-catering facilities in this area. These are filled by domestic tourists on weekends and school holidays, who come to experience the many wonders of the Drakensberg. These range from some of South Africa’s best hiking trails … to other adventure pursuits such as helicopter flips over the berg, para-gliding, quad biking, white river rafting, mountain biking (the Central and Southern Berg have recently developed extensive trails, for mountain bikers and trail runners), zip lining and hot air ballooning. For those who enjoy less physically draining activities, there are wonderful craft and art centres, eateries, the Drakensberg’s own brewery and even an excellent wine estate. Heading to the southern Drakensberg? Ensure you pass through Ixopo on a Sunday, as the Paton Express starts her engine around 10h30 to give you a fantastic train tour of the Southern Midlands. Heading out in a vintage steam train, you travel to Ncalu siding where you enjoy a lunch at the 103-year-old Mid Illovo station, while you revel in the views and countryside beloved of Alan Paton. Bring a picnic with. The train returns to Ixopo at 14h00.
DID YOU KNOW? The Garratt No 55-steam locomotive that drives the Paton Express was built in 1925 and spent most of its working life on the Estcourt-Weenen line. The Paton’s Narrow-Gauge Railway was reconstructed in 2000 as the line between Ixopo and Umzimkhulu was damaged.

SOUTH COAST The KwaZulu-Natal South Coast, with its golden beaches, warm Indian Ocean, sub-tropical forests and rolling hills, offers much excitement for the adventurous traveller - with outdoor pursuits ranging from mountain biking and gorge swings to shark diving and motor racing. For wheels of a different kind, the Dezzi South Coast Raceway in Oslo Beach hosts a variety of events – amongst others, the monthly KZN Drag Racing events will delight motoring enthusiasts and ‘petrol-heads’. With the heat of summer on its way the creepy crawlies will soon be making an appearance, so be prepared and take the kids to Crocworld for a snake safety course – and remember, they’re more afraid of you and if given space will scurry away to safety.

ELEPHANT COAST Located within the Elephant Coast region is the iSimangaliso Wetland Park, South Africa’s first proclaimed World Heritage Site, which together with Mozambique been protecting Africa’s first trans-frontier marine conservation area since 2009. It is an unspoilt area blessed with dense evergreen forests; lush ferns and wild orchids; wild date and Lala palms; swamp forests, mountainous sand dunes, thick coastal forest, pristine beaches as well as lakes and ocean. Whale watching is popular between the months of May and November, when humpback whales make their way north from their Antarctic feeding grounds, heading for the sea channels between Mozambique and Madagascar. Here they give birth to their calves in bathwater-warm temperatures, only leaving when the calves have developed enough thick blubber to withstand the icy temperatures down south. On their way there and back, they stream past the KwaZulu-Natal coastline. Enjoy a trip into these biodiversity-rich waters of the Indian Ocean with St Lucia Tours & Charters, the only operator with a licence in this region to take people out humpback whale watching. You might also spot turtles, whale sharks, dolphins, marlin and unusual pelagic birds. The uMkhuze section of the iSimangaliso Wetland Park is renowned for its game-viewing hides and often offers great sightings of African wild dog. The Hluhluwe iMfolozi Park is home to many species of antelope as well as large populations of elephant, buffalo and giraffe, the endangered rhino and predators such as the lion, cheetah and the elusive leopard. And Sodwana Bay, popular with both the diving fraternity as well as big game anglers is where the coelacanth – once believed extinct – is just one of the approximately 1200 fish species identified here.
DID YOU KNOW? iSimangaliso Wetland Park currently has over 200 elephants that share the Western Shores, Eastern Shores and uMkhuze sections of the Park – quite an accomplishment considering that elephants were only reintroduced to this area in 1994! It is a privilege viewing these magnificent animals, but remember to be cautious, and ALWAYS maintain a reasonable distance – at least 50 metres is recommended.

ZULULAND Experience vibrant Zulu culture, walk through lush indigenous forests and experience Africa’s magnificent wildlife up close… and take a refreshing dip in the waters of the Indian Ocean. This is summer in Zululand, where you feel the warm embrace of Africa’s sun and are welcomed with exuberance and wide smiles by the local people. Where hiking and nature trails abound, and game viewing opportunities are never far out of reach. Ocean, mangrove swamps and life-giving lagoons give way to rolling green hills and indigenous forests, and further inland you will find tea plantations, cattle ranches and pretty, historical towns such as Vryheid, with its many examples of Tudor and Edwardian architecture and Paulpietersburg, where you can relax in the therapeutic hot springs fed by a natural spring that surfaces near the Dumbe Mountain. A visit to Nongoma, the royal City of Zululand and central to Zulu culture, is where visitors can experience the traditional Zulu way of life – be enchanted by the atmosphere of the town, the rural simplicity of the
people and the informal trading that plays such an important part in their lives. The Mona Market is an open market on the outskirts of the town and is a hive of activity, with people buying, selling and bartering to meet their most pressing needs. For a more relaxed environment, a visit to the Amatikulu Nature Reserve offers opportunities to canoe and fish in the estuaries, stroll along the beautiful beach, swim in the sea, spot wonderful birdlife and a variety of small game in the coastal lowland forest and unspoilt grasslands. The adventurous will enjoy the 4x4 trail, either the conventional way or on a mountain bike - nothing like cycling amongst giraffe and zebra with croaking cisticolas and plainback pipits in the background. And if golf is your thing, a visit to the Mtunzini Golf Club, with its stunning views over the Umlalazi Estuary and Indian Ocean will certainly appeal.
DID YOU KNOW? King Cetshwayo was taken prisoner by the British at the Battle of Ulundi and imprisoned in Cape Town. Whilst there he requested to visit Britain to plead his case and ask to be returned to his throne in Zululand – he met with Queen Victoria who granted him his request allowing him to return and to rule a small portion of the Zulu Kingdom. On his return however, war had broken out between Zulu tribes and he fled to Eshowe, where he died two years later.
