EXPLORE THE ROUTES OF ZULULAND THE BATTLEFIELDS ROUTE The canvasses of the 19th century are filled with one historical drama after another as three forces pitted their armies against each other - fighting for land and supremacy. Between 1836 and 1852, Zulu warriors clashed with Boer settlers. Some years later the might of the British military was hurled against the Zulu nation. During the AngloZulu War of 1879, and the independent Afrikaner movements twice took up arms against the British Empire - first from 1880 to 1881 and then for three years during the Anglo-Boer War (1899-1902). The tranquil hills and grasslands of Zululand carry many a famous battle scar. The largest concentration of battle sites in South Africa are to be found in northern KwaZulu-Natal. Visited by military history enthusiasts from around the world, the sites are visitor friendly and linked by the Battlefields Route.
Several of the key towns on the Route are in Zululand, as are dozens of battlefields and fortifications, museums, war graves and memorials. The Zululand towns on the Battlefields Route are ESHOWE, MELMOTH, ULUNDI, BABANANGO, VRYHEID and PAULPIETERSBURG. Between them they offer a fascinating array of military landmarks that capture the atmosphere of a turbulent past. The Route can be travelled as a self-drive adventure, and an excellent guide-map is available from all local tourist information offices. Alternately, join a tailor-made battlefield tour in the company of a specialist guide who will show you sites and recount tales of epic battles, bravery and betrayal. ZULULAND’S HERITAGE ROUTE 66 Zululand’s Route 66 between GINGINDLOVU and UPHONGOLO follows one of the oldest trade routes through Zululand. Settlers resident in Port Natal in the early 19th Century would set off in oxwagons on well-worn tracks and cross into Zululand at a drift very close to the present N2 bridge over the Thukela River. The merchandise their wagons carried, as they forded the Thukela River into Zululand, included cotton and lambswool blankets, calico cloth, brass and copper wire, and coloured glass beads. Other commodities such as pick handles were not uncommon, and sometimes a gun or some gunpowder might be smuggled in to enhance profits. During their trips which would last up to three months, the traders hunted and bartered and on their return journey, if all went well, they would return to Port Natal with their wagons filled with ivory, buffalo and wildebeest skins, rhino horn, hippo teeth and hippo fat. Following in these same paths soon after them, in ever increasing numbers, were the missionaries, transport riders, then soldiers, colonial administrators, police, settlers and farmers. The wagon tracks have long since made way for a modern infrastructure but today’s visitors in their air-conditioned SUV’s, navigated by GPS, can still get a sense of how things used to be on Route 66. Many of its valleys once teeming with wild game, have been divided up into fertile farms but Zululand remains a place deeply rooted in its ancient traditions. THE ZULULAND BIRDING ROUTE The route has a spectacular 605 bird species and is a treasure trove of specials such as Green Barbet, Pel’s Fishing Owl, PinkThroated Twinspot, Neergard’s Sunbird and Palmnut Vulture. But this is just one part of a rich story. The Zululand Birding Route is much more than a convenient information and booking system the Zululand Birding Route is a conservation programme, proving that birding can generate income for local communities - in this way, birding tourism adds real value to wild birds and habitats in which they occur; it provides a tangible reason to conserve natural habitats and the birds that occur in them. The Birding Route is helping create a new career path for young South Africans from disadvantaged communities through training as birding guides. Individuals are selected from communities neighboring the birding spots for training, and through ongoing follow up assistance and mentorship this sharpens and assesses their skills and empowers them to make a success of their careers. KwaZulu-Natal has been a hive of activity with a mecca of Major events that have succeeded the Festive season. The Zulu Kingdom has played host to numerous events just in the short period of the New Year and thus continued to attract throngs of visitors who indulged on our hospitality. So far we have hosted the Dusi Canoe Marathon, the Midmar Mile, the Maritzburg City Marathon, the 15th Metro FM awards and the International Jazz Extravaganza. We also saw a string of international acts coming to KZN such as Grammy award winners, rappers TI and Nicki Minaj, the legendary Lionel Richie and the globally renowned comedian, Kevin Hart, making stop-overs in KZN, making KZN one of the most liveable provinces in the country Events such as these continue to bring in huge revenue for our tourism sector during low season periods. This, coupled with the work done by the Durban KZN Convention Bureau, which has successfully bid for numerous international meetings and exhibitions, go a long way towards ensuring that our sector remains strong. On the international front, we remain steadfast in positioning KZN as a global destination. We have just returned from ITB, Berlin, one of the two top travel exhibitions in the world, where we engaged with international buyers from 185 countries to ensure that we grow arrivals from Germany, from where we currently receive an estimated 45 000 arrivals. In line with the national agenda to increase the ocean economy of the country, we 4

are keen to drive tourism and economic development in the province through the optimal use of marine resources and the maritime industry. We intend broadening destination access by increasing the number of cruise ships and cruise ship passengers to the province. KwaZulu-Natal currently boasts the biggest and the deepest port in the country in Durban and Richards Bay respectively, and it serves as a gateway to trade in the southern hemisphere, presenting many opportunities for cruise tourism development. We have already started the spade work, and have begun to engage with the cruise industry to position Durban and Richards Bay as cruise destinations. Air connectivity to KZN has been a challenge in the past, in terms of growing our international visitor arrivals, but with the recent announcements of the new routes from Doha, Turkey and Addis Ababa, we are confident that KZN will begin to enjoy more international tourist arrivals. We are committed to ensuring that these routes remain sustainable and therefore we are committed in promoting and marketing these routes for them to succeed. Going forward, we are going to have a busy business period with many events and activities coming to our province: v American singer, songwriter, actor, and record producer, Josh Groban, will be performing at the Durban ICC on 10 April 2016 v Multi-award winning superstar, Mariah Carey, will be serenading music lovers at the Moses Mabhida Stadium on 29 April 2016
v Bikers and adventure seekers can head on down to Margate on the South Coast for Africa Bike Week, which is set to take place from 28 April – 1 May 2016. This 5-day event includes free live entertainment by a host of local artists, plus trading stalls, local outrides, and the ever-popular mass ride which draws thousands of bikers from around the country v In May, we will welcome over 10,000 exhibitors and delegates from the travel and tourism industry, as they flock to Durban for Africa’s largest travel and tourism show, Indaba 2016. HARLEY-DAVIDSON ANNOUNCES AFRICA BIKE WEEK™ 2016 For the eighth consecutive year, HarleyDavidson Africa presents the largest motorcycle event in South Africa, Africa Bike Week™ 2016 in Margate, KwaZulu-Natal South Coast. The event takes place from 28th April to 1st May 2016, and due to the public holidays, record attendance is expected at the event.
An entrance fee of R300 will be charged to enter the main stage entertainment area for visitors who have not registered online. While access to the event site is free of charge for all motorcycles and pedestrians, visitor numbers on the event site will be strictly controlled and is subject to space available.
The traditional Mass Ride will be held on Sunday 1st May, when hundreds of Harley-Davidson and other motorcycles ride together from Shelly Centre to Port Shepstone and back to Margate.
Due to the growing numbers at the event, Harley-Davidson is committed to improving security, which will see stricter access control to the site and the introduction of online registrations to the event.
Other highlights include, Harley-Davidson Durban dealership tent, official event merchandise with a special offer to members of the Harley Owners Group® (H.O.G. ®), displays of the latest Harley-Davidson motorcycle models and the new “Kings of Custom” display of amazing customized Harley-Davidson bikes.
Harley-Davidson has again partnered with Hibiscus Coast Municipality, Ugu District Municipality and Ugu South Coast Tourism as key event sponsors to make Africa Bike Week™ 2016 another great event.

Written by Tony Miyambo and Gerard Bester, in collaboration with William Harding, directed by Gerard Bester and produced by Gita Pather, this powerful autobiographical piece leaves audiences reflecting on their own lives and individual histories. The Cenotaph of Dan wa Moriri will be performed for schools on 5 & 6 May at 09h00, and for the public on 6 & 7 May at 19h30.
Choreographed by Sean Bovim and featuring the Playhouse Dance Residency and Bovim Ballet, ROMEO’S KISS is based on Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet. This offers an exciting fusion of classical ballet and contemporary dance, with a mixture of neo-classical music and well-known cover versions of Beatles hits from Gwen Stefani, Wet Wet Wet and many more. KickstArt presents Stephen Sondheim’s INTO THE WOODS at the Elizabeth Sneddon Theatre from 15 April until 1 May. This musical fairy tale parable for grown-ups is a modern twist on several of the Brothers Grimm fairy tales, intertwining the familiar plots of a few iconic stories and exploring the possible consequences of the characters’ wishes and dreams. It follows the trials and adventures of a collection of well-known fairy-tale characters, including
Cinderella, Rapunzel, Jack and the Beanstalk, and Little Red Riding Hood. They all go into the deep, dark woods on separate quests, and their paths cross and intersect with sometimes amusing, sometimes alarming results. Bryan Hiles and Jessica Sole play the central characters of the Baker and his wife, who have to collect a series of magical objects over three nights in order to dispel the curse of the eccentric next-doorneighbour witch and have a child of their own. The Witch, a hugely challenging role first created by Broadway musical theatre diva Bernadette Peters, and recently played on screen by Meryl Streep, is played with relish and style by Durban’s own delicious diva, Lisa Bobbert. Frances Currie plays Cinderella, with Liesl Coppin as her wicked step-mother. Graeme Wicks plays hapless, dreamy jack, with Marion Loudon as his exasperated, everpractical mother. Little Red Riding Hood is played by Katy Moore, and her nemesis, the sweet-talking, always-lurking Wolf, is played by Lyle Buxton, who also plays Cinderella’s handsome and seemingly-charming Prince. Rapunzel is played by sweet-voiced Haylea Hounsom, and her prince by exciting newcomer, Alex Hodges. Into the Woods is directed by Steven Stead, with musical direction by American musical theatre expert, Drew Rienstra, set design by Greg King, costume designs by Neil Stuart Harris, and lighting by Tina le Roux. The production is not suitable for young children. PG eight years old. Also coming to the Sneddon is COMEDY MASTERCLASS, the latest offering from Aaron McIlroy. Join Professor Jurgen Gaff (McIlroy) as he delves into the science that underpins the world’s oldest coping mechanism, a sense of humour. Comedy Masterclass is a surreal comedic roller coaster ride into the world of laughter . The production runs from 18 May and booking is through Computicket. Finally note that throughout April, SIWELA SONKE DANCE THEATRE are touring a 50 minute education programme to primary schools in Durban and its surrounding areas. 1000 Hills
When Europeans arrived at the Port of Natal in 1825, the Valley of 1000 Hills was a remote and isolated area teeming with game. WS Field was one of the first Europeans to settle in 1851, and leopards were said to occasionally spend the night on the veranda of the Field homestead in what is now Kloof. Within a few years a wagon route opened up between Durban and the interior, close to what is now the Old Main Road. The establishment of the railway line linking the goldfields with the port rapidly followed the discovery of gold in the Transvaal in the 1880s, and the rail and road traffic through the 1000 Hills increased. The Valley of 1000 Hills is named after the many hills and valleys which rise up from the banks of the Umgeni River as it flows from the distant Drakensberg mountains to the Indian Ocean. The valley has been home to the Zulu people for centuries, with many continuing to practice and live their unique traditional lifestyle. Their colourful ceremonies and expressive, artistic culture give this area its vibrant atmosphere and creative energy. Explore the roots of Zulu culture by taking an organised tour deep into tribal lands. Witness ancient Zulu ceremonies, as traditional diviners ‘throw the bones’ and communicate with their spiritual ancestors at PheZulu Safari Park. Sapphire Coast The town of Amanzimtoti (meaning ‘sweet waters’ in Zulu) is said to have been named by the great Zulu King Shaka after tasting the fresh water that flows out of the hills at this scenic spot. It is situated on the coast a short drive south of Durban. This part of the coast is a popular destination for scuba divers who come to explore Aliwal Shoal, a fossilised sand dune that lies 5km off the Umkomaas river mouth. A change of season is in the air and few destinations in KwaZulu-Natal are better placed than the Midlands to experience nature’s spectacular show of autumn colours and falling leaves. April and May also represent one of the busiest times in Pietermaritzburg and the Midlands with no less than four signature events dominating the calendar.

For more info check out the website www.midlands.kzn.org.za Top of the pops is the one-of-a-kind Comrades Marathon, the world’s oldest and largest ultra-marathon that, this year, will see 20 000 runners coming under starter’s orders outside the historic City Hall in Pietermaritzburg on 29 May. At 5.30 am, runners will get going before sunrise and stragglers will have 12 hours in which to arrive at the Kingsmead Stadium finish in Durban.
Such is the global allure of the Comrades Marathon that three bus tours are hosted ahead of the race, specifically for runners from elsewhere in the world, to familiarise themselves with the route that includes a visit to Comrades House and museum in Pietermaritzburg, and the Wall of Honour in the Valley of a 1000 Hills. www -- WHAT, WHAT, WHERE WHERE & & WHEN WHEN April-May April-May 2016 2016 28 28 www
The annual Royal Show is a landmark event that this year is staged from 27 May to 5 June at the city’s showgrounds. While the traditional agricultural show and general exhibition activities will continue to dominate proceedings, great emphasis will be placed this year on a diverse entertainment programme. Among the artists contracted are the Jeremy Loops four-piece band, Afrikaans crooner, Theuns Jordaan, Sorina, of 7de Laan fame, and Durban star Majozi. Another of the provincial capital city’s iconic events, Art in the Park, has a new home this year, the picturesque KZN Botanical Gardens in Pietermaritzburg. In another change, the
date of this year’s event has been moved to avoid the congestion and accommodation crunch associated with the Comrades Marathon and the Royal Show, and will now take place on 4 - 8 May. While on the theme of change, Cars in the Park will again exhibit at the Ashburton Training Centre where it moved to last year. Scheduled for 15 May, the 41st edition will showcase well over 1 500 modern and vintage cars, motorcycles and novelty vehicles, including tractors and steam engines. With more than 60 food and beverage stalls, a beer garden and fun fair, the day promises plenty of family fun.
ART IN THE PARK Art in the Park is a premier outdoor artselling exhibition where artists exhibit and sell their works direct to the public and is part of a mix of events that Pietermaritzburg City is known for. It is in its 54th year of presentation and is now transitioning from an event to a festival of note. Creative Arts College, an award winning art institute has been announced as the main sponsor of Art in the Park and commits to its development as an international calendar event.
The CEO of Creative Arts College, Mr Kevin Palium states that “Art is one of the highest forms of expression and communication. It is also a key instrument in creating a congruent multiracial, multicultural society.”
Whilst ‘fine art’ in the form of paintings remains the focal point of the festival the entire park will be occupied with other forms of art exhibitions from performing arts to digital arts, craft & production art, photography, kiddies theatre, food pavilion and many more exciting stalls and activities. It is not only a fantastic event to support due to its exciting nature, it is also one that carries a strong positive objective of development and unification through arts. Art is indeed a vehicle that has the power to change opinions and break barriers. The theme of “Art in the Park” festival is Social Cohesion and will be incorporated in many ways within the production elements of performance art and other forms. The sub-theme is “Water is Life”, which will be especially celebrated at the kiddies theatre with an enthralling line up of activities for the young ones.
Art in the park is an event that will stimulate the creative fraternity as it creates awareness around art and it creates a platform for artists to showcase and sell their works, allowing them to participate in the economy. Mr Dumisani Mhlongo of the Msunduzi Pietermaritzburg Tourism Association is excited with the growth of the event and is happy to announce that it will officially take place at the KZN National Botanical Gardens in Pietermaritzburg which offers a safe and secure venue.

The Drakensberg is an awe-inspiring range of mountains forming the natural border between Lesotho and KwaZulu-Natal. Named ‘Ukhahlamba’ by the Zulu people, this 243 000 hectare mountainous region well deserves its international status as a World Heritage Site and offers massive cliffs towering over riverine bush, lush evergreen forests, cascading waterfalls and mountain streams, as well as hiking trails that cater for hikers of varying fitness levels.

For more info check out the website www.drakensberg.kzn.org.za This region attracts nature lovers, hikers, day wanderers, adventurers and mountaineers alike, all wanting to set their foot on the mountain, conquer its challenges, revel in its beauty and admire the awesome views from its lofty peaks. In addition to mountain peaks there are vast expanses of grassland, secluded valleys, streams, rivers and indigenous forests. One such forest is found in the Marutswa Nature Reserve just outside the little village of Bulwer. The Marutswa forest is home to the rare Cape parrot and is filled with rare yellowwood trees, moss clad rocks, monkey ropes and entangled tree branches and roots – it has been said that it looks like something out of ‘The Hobbit’.
In 1836, the French missionaries Arbousset and Daumas named the largest of the domes in the Royal Natal National Park Mont-aux-Sources - a literal description of this source of five rivers. Of these, the uThukela plummets 948m in five clear leaps, making it the world’s second highest waterfall.
Another favourite for hikers and adventurers is the Cathedral Peak area. Here you can drive by 4x4 up Mike’s Pass to the top of the Little Berg, bringing you much closer to the escarpment and to the starting point of hiking routes to the renowned Ndedema Gorge, the Organ Pipes Pass and the escarpment. For those of ‘average’ fitness, the Amphitheatre Slackpacking Trail is a three-day adventure
that offers the opportunity of reaching the summit to view the uThukela Falls, spending three nights in lodges along the way. Royal Natal National Park is ideal for hiking, catering for all levels of fitness and agility with a superb network of graded walks. For the adventurous, the summit of Mont-auxSources can be reached by walking from the summit plateau and scaling a 100-rung chain ladder. Although accidents are rare, be sure to complete the Mountain Rescue Register before you set off, even if it is for a day walk or just a few hours. Other active options are horse riding, mountain biking and golf, but if you’re less inclined to physical activity, just relax, and breathe in the fresh mountain air.

THE 2016 KAP SANI2C IS FAST APPROACHING AND PREPARATIONS FOR THE LARGEST MULTI-STAGE MTB RACE IN THE WORLD ARE WELL UNDERWAY! With spectacular views and breathtaking single track, the KAP sani2c is a three day mountain bike stage race that takes place on the 10 May from Underberg in KwaZulu-Natal’s Southern Drakensberg to Scottburgh’s Main Beach on KZN’s South Coast. Participants tackle the 265km and 3301m of elevation in teams of two with three different events - the Trail, Adventure and Race accommodating hundreds of riders annually. Races & Dates: Trail: 10-12 May Adventure: 11-13 May Race: 12-14 May The KAP sani2c began as the dream of Farmer Glen (Glen Haw), an avid mountain bike enthusiast and co-organiser of the Imana Wild Ride and in 1998, together with a few local nutty mountain bikers, he completed the first trial run. The following year Glen scouted and refined
the rugged path with the objective of establishing a world-class route. He invited friends and experienced mountain bikers to join in on the infamous dry runs. In 2004, Glen was confident that a worthy route had finally been established and agreed to by all the relevant landowners and authorities and so February 2005 saw the staging of the inaugural sani2c. Public response to this «lifestyle event» was overwhelming and the race grew to massive proportions and demand for entries and pressure from communities wanting to participate in the event saw some radical changes ahead of the 2008 event. The decision to change the format of the event to be run as two separate races split into the sani2c Adventure and sani2c Race - was a world first and allowed further opportunities for community involvement

and accommodated all teams on the 2007 waiting list. It also warranted improving facilities at the overnight race villages with the two 2008 events ultimately deemed a huge success. 2011 again saw some big changes. Traditionally held in March, the event was susceptible to late summer rains which had disrupted plans every second year since it›s inception. After months of negotiating, juggling of dates with other sporting events and planning around farming operations the dates for future sani2c’s were moved to May and right away great weather created perfect riding conditions. There’s no doubt about it - visitors are spoilt for choice with what to do along the KwaZulu-Natal South Coast. Located within the Elephant Coast region is the iSimangaliso Wetland Park, South Africa’s first proclaimed World Heritage Site, which together with Mozambique, has been tasked with protecting Africa’s first trans-frontier marine conservation area since 2009. It is an unspoilt area blessed with dense evergreen forests, lush ferns and wild orchids, wild date and Lala palms, swamp forests, mountainous sand dunes, thick coastal forest, pristine beaches as well as lakes and ocean.

The grasses, reeds and sedges have their place of importance in the iSimangaliso biodiversity, two of the most important being incema and umhlanga. These are harvested during the annual harvest season in May by community beneficiaries that are permitted to cut bales of these reeds for use in traditional crafts. Not only is the Hluhluwe-iMfolozi Park credited with saving the once endangered white rhino, but it is also home to many species of antelope as well as large populations of elephant, buffalo and giraffe, and predators such as the lion, cheetah, the elusive leopard and rhino – the rhino, both black and white, are still under threat from poaching. Protected species include cycads and many other rare, medicinal and beautiful plants such as the glorious pink flowers of Crinums. iSimangaliso Wetland Park boasts a wealth of biodiversity and some amazing species of flora. These plants, however, are just as vulnerable to poaching as the fauna, and iSimangaliso offers them the same high level of protection as any of the animals within its boundaries. Within the grasslands and wetlands of the Eastern Shores you may be lucky to patches of “aMazibu” water lilies,
tall orange Gladiolus and if one knows where to look, the rare yellow tree orchid. However, it’s the trees that make up the vast expanse of the Park’s green décor. Distinctive species include the Fever tree, the dune-loving Coastal silver oak, several types of Monkey orange and the Water berry (uMdoni). Visitors to uMkhuze, will appreciate the multi-level aerial boardwalk which weaves its way through majestic sycamore fig trees lining the uMkhuze River, while on the Western Shores, an impressive Cape Ash (uMthona) takes centre stage in the canopy boardwalk and viewing deck over the narrows of Lake St Lucia. The town of St Lucia, located on the shores of the St Lucia Estuary, is surrounded by the iSimangaliso Wetland Park.

The Remembrance Route begins from Pietermaritzburg through Greytown, Tugela Ferry, and Dundee and onto the Ithala Game Reserve and is an area incredibly rich in Zulu culture. The Rifleman’s Road Route starts from Volkrust in the northwest, down through Newcastle, Dundee, Ladysmith, Colenso and Escourt. Visitors will encounter fabulous scenery, generous hospitality, and tales of great courage and endurance. These routes include options such as world-class game reserves, heritage sites, battlefields and Zulu culture and tradition, as well as stunning scenery, warm mineral fountains, fly fishing and birding. At the Carnegie Art Gallery in Newcastle, contemporary South African art works can be viewed and a well-stocked shop with local craftwork and the unique Isiphethu fabric art is available. Both Thukela Ferry and Pomeroy produce fine arts and crafts.
On the mountainside overlooking the breathtaking precipice of the Thukela Valley is the KwaKopi Curio Shop and community art and crafts centre. The curio shop was established by the Umzinyathi District and Msinga Local Municipalities to showcase local talent. It has an array of traditional beadwork, pottery and woven grass products, and includes a workshop area for local artists. At Kwakunje, at the Talana Museum in Dundee, visitors are invited to experience Zulu cultural life as it was and how it is changing. They are able to interact with the crafters, guides and storytellers and are soon steeped in the mystique of the traditional way of life and how it has adapted over time to meet the demands of outside and progressive forces.

UMZINYATHI IS A HISTORICALLY RICH REGION, RENOWNED FOR ITS NATURAL BEAUTY. THE DISTRICT IS SITUATED IN NORTHWEST KWAZULU-NATAL, BORDERED BY THE MIDLANDS IN THE WEST, THE DRAKENSBERG IN THE NORTH, AND ZULULAND TO THE EAST. The Umzinyathi region bears memories of the wars that swept across South Africa between 1879 and 1902, but its history starts long before this. The legendary King Shaka and the Zulu nation created upheaval among local tribes, the Voortrekkers crossed the mountains to settle on the land, while the British colonists had settled at what was known as ‘Port Natal’, now Durban. What followed was an era of war, as the Zulus, Voortrekkers and British clashed in some of the bloodiest battles in the history of South Africa, shaping the towns and villages of this region. The wars were fought over land and sovereignty, and played out over almost 100 years. Today people travel from around the world to revisit these momentous events in our history.

Rorke’s Drift Rorke’s Drift, located 45 kilometres southeast of Dundee, is the site of one of the most famous battles of the Anglo-Zulu War. It is a tranquil village nestled at the foot of a rocky outcrop, a few kilometres from the Mzinyathi River. At the entrance to the village is a traditional Zulu umuzi (village), with beehive huts encircling an Nguni cattle kraal. (main photo pictured above). The umuzi offers visitors the chance to truly experience traditional Zulu lifestyle; be captivated by the pure energy of Zulu dancers, milk an Nguni cow, taste home-brewed Zulu beer and sleep the night in a beehive hut. Further into the village is the Rorke’s Drift Battlefield and Museum, which has attracted much acclaim for its displays of the Anglo-Zulu War.
