SANIBONANI and Welcome to the Exceptional Zulu Kingdom

Our tourism sector has enjoyed major economic spin offs from the thousands of people who converged on the province from all over the country and the continent to enjoy the wonderful hospitality, spectacular weather and overall splendor of KwaZulu-Natal. The Vodacom Durban July, which has become the biggest race horsing event in the country, didn’t miss a beat. Despite the chilly weather, patrons came from all over the country and from our neighboring countries also, to enjoy the fashion, the music and the horses. This year, we also partnered with South African Express to bring travel agents, tour operators and media from Botswana, the DRC, Namibia, Zimbabwe and Zambia, to enjoy the event. The team kick-started their tour with a trade workshop with local partners to forge and build stronger business linkages with them which will enable smoother transactions when they bring tourists to KZN. Some 40% of the estimated 60 000 patrons came from outside the province, injecting an estimated R370 million into the provincial economy. Hotel occupancies were well over 85% in and around Durban. We are excited to see that the event keeps evolving and reinventing itself, with people creating other exciting side events during this time. This year, we saw some of these events spread beyond the city of Durban, ensuring that the VDJ fever was felt throughout the province. In July, KZN introduced the first standalone consumer show to run alongside the House and Garden Show, co Travel and Adventure Show, aimed at promoting travel directly to consumers. We were excited to see some of the tourism products and accommodation establishments exhibiting at the show, showcasing their offerings to the people of KZN. This was a fitting show, as 90 % of the people of KZN when they take a holiday; choose to travel within the Province.

Close on the heels of the Travel and Adventure Show, we welcomed over 18 000 delegates from all over the world for the World Aids Congress. The conference attracted world-renowned celebrities, such as Oscar winning actresses, Charlize Theron and Queen Latifah, multi-award-winning actor and musician, Common, His Royal Highness, Prince Harry of Wales as well as Microsoft founder, Bill Gates. The projected direct impact on the economy of KZN was well over R800 million. During Women’s Month, we will also be launching Women in Tourism, KZN chapter. This will be an essential forum for women in tourism to engage and discuss critical issues within the tourism sector. We want to have open dialogues with the women in the sector so we can continue to transform the sector and ensure that more women become active participants in tourism. On Women’s Day, we will be proudly sending off a crew of all-women explorers from KwaZulu-Natal who have decided to focus the global spotlight on our gentle giants, our elephants. This came about through the realization that elephants were being poached at an alarming rate. The Elephant Ignite Expedition will travel through ten Southern African countries and over 10 000 km visiting organizations dedicated to the preservation of elephants. The province will also be hosting The Loeries Creative Week for the second year, from 15-21 August, at the Durban ICC. The Loeries will be bringing over 16 000 participants from all over the country as well as the USA, the UK, Australia, Kenya, Russia and the Middle East, to KZN. This will also

NDABO KHOZA CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER: TOURISM KWAZULU-NATAL

be a great opportunity for the province to showcase locations and studios that can be used by the creative industry for anything ranging from films and ads to music videos. September is Tourism Month, and this year we will be celebrating the month under the theme “Tourism for All, promoting Universal Accessibility”. In line with the UNWTO Global Code of Ethics, we will be using Tourism Month to promote human rights, to inspire the people of KwaZuluNatal to travel this exceptional province, to raise awareness of Universal Accessibility amongst the travel trade and the general public, and to encourage transformation within the sector. We therefore encourage the people of KwaZulu-Natal to participate by exploring and enjoying the myriad of activities and hidden gems throughout our province. We will be calling on all our trade partners to put together specials and packages for Tourism Month that will make travel to KZN more accessible. We will also be celebrating Tourism Friday by calling on all KZN citizens to wear a yellow T-shirt to welcome visitors coming here for a holiday. Capture those special Tourism Month moments, post and tag us on all our social media networks and #GottaLuvKZN, you might just win yourself a special weekend away with one of your favorite celebrities. Also, be on the lookout on Facebook (KZNTourism), Instagram (@tourismkzn_official), Twitter (@Tourism KZN), YouTube (KwaZulu-Natal Tourism Authority) and Pintrest (KZN Tourism), to see when we will be popping by your area to spread the Tourism Month vibe.

This year the organisers have introduced learning in the form of the Loeries MasterClasses. The classes are a series of sessions designed to assist growth and improve innovation in creativity. Attendees will receive a certificate of completion. The Fringe Festival gives Durban businesses, individuals and creative-related events the opportunity to make their mark on the with city with their own creative flair. Durbanites are encouraged to captivate, enlighten and ignite interest around their work and the creative community at large.

Tregoning explains that this year’s 10 finalists stand the chance of being awarded the Loeries Creative Future Scholarship, worth R500,000. The recipient of the scholarship will be announced at the Loeries this August. The recipient will be allowed to select a course to study full-time at Vega in Durban.

GIBA GORGE MTB TRAIL We have a network of trails that traverse the valley in both directions with many link ups allowing a rider to flow from one trail into another. This allows you to create a different riding experience each time you hit the trails. If you ride all the marked trails without deviating you will clock up around 35km, but if you add in the many ‘link up’ trails you can extend this distance. All the trails (apart from the Purple Route) offer a variety of technical aspects and you can expect, rocks, roots, drops & tight switch backs. In summer the trails are more tacky and grip well whilst in winter with minimal rain, they can become a bit loose in corners. The Routes • The Purple Route is perfect for kids and first timers, and it is this trail where many a new biker starts out. • From here I would suggest the Green Route which allows for easier climbs and long flowing fun filled descents. • After this is the Blue Route, which is also the longest trail with the steepest climbs and tightest switchbacks, and is a really good training loop. • After this we have two advanced trails; The Downhill & the Enduro and these are short in distance but require advanced riding skills and are suited to bikes with more travel in their front shocks.

PINOTAGE ON TAP They call it “The people’s Pinotage” Diemersfontein’s flag carrier, known as The Original Coffee Chocolate Pinotage! Since we first developed this Pinotage in 2001, as a new and original style, it has taken wine lovers throughout the world by storm! It is praised for its easy accessibility, uniqueness, wonderful rich coffee, smokey overtones on the nose - and yet the preservation of voluptuous fruit on the palate, along with cinnamon and chocolatey notes on the palate. It appeals to new drinkers who have not previously been red wine enthusiasts - they find it an easy introduction to the world of red wine - a true midwife to drinking pleasure. The REAL story behind Pinotage on Tap... Thousands wish to come and celebrate its new vintage launched at our fun-filled annual party, Pinotage-on-Tap. It has been called the best party in the winelands calendar. It’s a young wine made to be drunk early. We bottle it each year in July or August - after an oaky immersion for just five months. It’s ready very soon thereafter - and we believe although it will last longer - it’s at its best in the first year or two. But generally its fans don’t wait that long. Each year we taste some vintage variation, and the fans argue about their favourites and the merits of each. But we will always maintain the essential

14 www - WHAT, WHERE & WHEN Aug-Sept 2016

features of the wine - the consistency that comes from using the highest quality grapes from the Wellington region and the same fermentation and oak maturation procedures each year. Its had quite a reception across its now ten vintages - starting off immediately in the ABSA Top Ten - it has won Trophy at the Michelangelo International Wine Trophy for best Pinotage, silver at the Wine Style Asia, Silver in Nova Scotia, Michelangelo Gold for the 2006. But almost best of all - in April 2007, Neil Pendock christened it “The People’s Pinotage” after his consumer survey in the South African Sunday Times found that it was the “overwhelming favourite” of all pinotages. Since then, the people have spoken again by voting it “The Best Red Wine on Show” at Winex in Cape Town and Johannesburg in 2008/9/10. Diemersfontein Pinotage is at present available in nineteen countries and in South Africa, it is available in many top outlets in each province. Please refer to our agents and stockists information. Diemersfontein also sells delicious Pinotage Truffles which are made exclusively for the estate using the best of Belgian chocolate and (of course) the coffee chocolate Pinotage.

Diemersfontein Wines proudly host Pinotage On Tap - The ultimate and original Pinotage festival. POT is recognised as the BEST WINE EVENT in the world. (Drinks international). THE ZULU ROYAL REED DANCE

ONCE A YEAR, IN THE HEART OF ZULU KINGDOM THOUSANDS OF PEOPLE MAKE THE LONG JOURNEY TO THE KING OF THE ZULU NATION’S ROYAL RESIDENCE AT ENYOKENI PALACE. Here, between Nongoma and Ulundi, young Zulu maidens take part in a colourful cultural ceremony, The Zulu Royal Reed Dance festival - or Umkhosi woMhlanga in the Zulu language. Steeped in the history of the rise of the Zulu kingdom under the great King Shaka, the Reed Dance festival has been celebrated by countless generations, and attracts thousands of visitors from around the country and from across the world. This dignified traditional ceremony and vibrant festive occasion depicts the rich cultural heritage and proud origins of the Zulu people. RITUAL CELEBRATION The Reed Dance celebration performs the essential role of unifying the Zulu nation and King Zwelithini, who presides over the ceremony. The festival takes its name from the riverbed reeds which form the central focus of this four day event. The reed- sticks are carried in a procession by thousands of young maidens, who are invited to the king’s palace each year. More than 10 000 maidens from various communities throughout the province take part in the Reed Dance ceremony, with the rest of the nation helping them to celebrate 18 www - WHAT, WHERE & WHEN Aug-Sept 2016

their preparation for womanhood. It is a great honour to be invited to take part in the ceremony and it is also a great source of pride for their families and communities. According to Zulu tradition, only virgins are permitted to take part in the festival to ensure that they are ritually ‘pure’ COLOURFUL OCCASION The Reed Dance festival is a solemn occasion for the young women taking part, but it is also an opportunity to show off their singing and dancing and beadwork, the fruits of many months of preparation. The women make some of the finest beadwork in Africa, and the festival is an especially vibrant and colourful occasion on account of the rich beadwork on display For visitors this exquisite handwork can provide a unique souvenir or gift to take home. Each region in the kingdom has a distinctive craft tradition, and the colours, patterns and style of the beadwork so luxuriantly displayed by the young women, as both ornaments and clothing, attest to the region of origin of the craftwork.

young women form a procession led by the chief princess of the Zulu Royal family. One of the daughters of the Zulu king is also the leader of the group of maidens as they go through this important rite of passage. Each maiden carries a reed which has been cut from the riverbed and symbolizes the power that is vested in nature. The reeds reflect a deep mythical connection with the origin of the Zulu people, where, tradition tells us, the original ancestor emerged from a reed bed. In everyday use, these reeds are the building material for a typical domed or beehive hut, iqhugwane, which is found in rural homesteads throughout KwaZulu-Natal. Zulu mythology has it that if a young woman who is not a virgin takes part in the Reed Dance ceremony, her reed will break and embarass her in full public view. Accompanied by jubilant singing and dancing, the stately procession winds its way up the hill to the palace entrance where the King awaits, flanked by his royal regiment.

HANDING OVER THE REED

As leader of the group, the chief princess kneels down before the King and presents him with a reed to mark the occasion, before joining the young women in a joyful dance of tribute to the King.

As the Reed Dance ceremony begins, the

DURBAN DISCOVER OUR PEOPLE OUR HERITAGE….

The people of Durban are a most interesting and unique blend of African, Indian and European cultures and Heritage and Tourism month are the perfect time to reflect on, explore and enjoy the rich cultural diversity that our city is built on. Visit some of the iconic places that illustrate various facets of our epic history and enjoy a fascinating and insightful journey of into a bygone era.

For more info check out the website www.durbanexperience.co.za Durban’s City Hall was completed in 1910, and is over a 100 years old. A fine example of Edwardian Neo-baroque architecture, the dome of the City Hall was designed by Stanley G. Hudson, who was inspired by the city hall in Belfast, Northern Ireland. Located on the second floor, the Durban Art Gallery houses an impressive collection of both international and South African art. A number of museums in Durban offer an amazing insight into our history and heritage, preserved and brought to life. Killie Campbell Africana Museum, located in the former Dutch-style home of Dr. Killie Campbell, a great collector of South African history houses pieces of Zulu art, books and photographs that tell the history of the Zulu’s and Natal, an ethnology collection, pieces of furniture and precious sculptures. Durban’s Natural Science Museum, located in the majestic City Hall building showcases Africa’s wild life and the chance to see taxidermies like an elephant, wild dogs, a leopard, birds and insects. The KwaMuhle Museum shares the story of Durban’s past and present. The museum celebrates the courage of the “ordinary” South Africans who challenged racist policies and won. Find out more about the early history of this region through interesting replicas of Durban

style settlements at the Old Court House Museum. Feel the colonial past in a beautiful building that was once a Court House, located very close to the City Hall. Kwa Muhle Museum once housed the Native Administration Department. Today this museum documents the troubled Apartheid era, describing the harsh life in that period. The Natal Maritime Museum symbolises the city’s importance as a maritime trade centre and is housed in three floating ships: a minesweeper dating from World War Two, a steam tug and a pilot boat. Visit the Inanda Heritage Route which starts at the Inanda Township, home to the Ohlange Institute, founded by John Dube, the first president of the ANC. The immaculately restored Inanda Seminary, founded in 1869 by missionary Mary Edwards, was the oldest African private schools for girls. Ebuhleni Village is one of the headquarters of the Shembe Church. The church has over 2 million followers and was founded 100 years ago. The Phoenix Settlement, located nearby, was where icon of peace, Mahatma Gandhi, developed his philosophy of passive resistance. His home has been restored and is now set up as a monument.

Andrew Harvard The magnificent Juma Masjid Mosque, the largest mosque in the Southern hemisphere, dominates Durban’s central Indian district. Around the mosque are several Indian food outlets, most offering the uniquely Durban ‘bunnychow’ (half a loaf of bread scooped out and filled with curry). Also in the area is the brightly painted Victoria Street Market offering incense, henna tattoos, spices and other exotic goods. The history of Durban Warwick Market goes back to 1860. The original market was an open-air affair. In 1876 the Durban Town Council provided a Market Building at the corner of Monty Naicker (Pine) and Dorothy Nyembe (Gardiner), behind the old Post Office building, and in 1901 a new Borough Market was built on the thin sliver of land, previously owned by the Railways, between Commercial, Railway and Monty Naicker Streets. These are just few of the many places in Durban that have been preserved so that we can reflect on our heritage.

1000 Hills

When Europeans arrived at the Port of Natal in 1825, the Valley of 1000 Hills was a remote and isolated area teeming with game. WS Field was one of the first Europeans to settle in 1851, and leopards were said to occasionally spend the night on the veranda of the Field homestead in what is now Kloof. Within a few years a wagon route opened up between Durban and the interior, close to what is now the Old Main Road. The establishment of the railway line linking the goldfields with the port rapidly followed the discovery of gold in the Transvaal in the 1880s, and the rail and road traffic through the 1000 Hills increased. The Valley of 1000 Hills is named after the many hills and valleys which rise up from the banks of the Umgeni River as it flows from the distant Drakensberg mountains to the Indian Ocean. The valley has been home to the Zulu people for centuries, with many continuing to practice and live their unique traditional lifestyle. Their colourful ceremonies and expressive, artistic culture give this area its vibrant atmosphere and creative energy. Explore the roots of Zulu culture by taking an organised tour deep into tribal lands. Witness ancient Zulu ceremonies, as traditional diviners ‘throw the bones’ and communicate with their spiritual ancestors at PheZulu Safari Park. PheZulu also offers traditional Zulu dancing and cultural shows, as well as game drives, local curios, wonderful views across the valley and a crocodile and snake park. On the crest of the hills overlooking the valley are leafy suburbs and village centres, which have astonishing views and a year round holiday climate of warm summers and cool winters. These villages offer all the creature comforts one would expect including spas, B&Bs, fine dining, sophisticated shopping centres, outdoor adventure and local arts and crafts unique to the area.

Tickets are available from Quicket. Popcorn, slush and snacks will be on sale on the night and you are welcome to bring a picnic basket. Please note that alcohol may not be brought onto the premises. Prehistoric family the Croods live in a particularly dangerous moment in time. Patriarch Grug (Nicolas Cage), his mate, Ugga (Catherine Keener), teenage daughter Eep (Emma Stone), son Thunk (Clark Duke) and feisty Gran (Cloris Leachman) gather food by day and huddle together in a cave at night. When a more evolved caveman named Guy (Ryan Reynolds) arrives on the scene, Grug is distrustful, but it soon becomes apparent that Guy is correct about the impending destruction of their world.

TESTIMONAL - Robbert Wedderburn An amazing new market that is gaining popularity very quickly! This is my favorite market! Both vendors and customers are treated with respect and everyone is very accommodatinging of each other. It’s the best way to relax and treat yourself on a Friday night. Highly recommended!

Clermont Kwa Dabeka

Tourism Development

Claremont Kwa Dabeka Tourism Clermont was a black middle income township during the apartheid days, surrounded by Westville, Kloof, New Germany and Inanda in the distance. The main road is called Clermont road and was named after Sir Clermont, a farmer in the area who sold his land. It was the only place in Durban where black people were able to buy property and build houses. Since the end of apartheid Clermont has become a sprawling township as people from the rural areas came to seek work opportunities in the nearby suburbs of Westville and New Germany, Pinetown and Durban. Clermont has a large Anglican, Catholic and Wesleyan community and on Sundays one can see the women of each denomination wearing their church uniforms with pride.

WHAT, WHERE & WHEN

BATTLEFIELDS

The rugged splendour of the landscape is dotted with haunting memorials, reminders of the bloodiest battles in history that were fought between Zulu, Brit and Boer. The Battlefields however, not only plays host to countless monuments and well preserved artefacts. Its hills and valleys are home to game reserves, crafters, art galleries, hot springs and a wide range of adventure activities.

DID YOU KNOW?

For more info check out the website www.battlefields.kzn.org.za White water rafting, mountain biking, abseiling, 4x4 trails, horse riding and hiking are just some of the activities available for the adventurous. Other more relaxed pursuits include a round of golf on one of the 9 and 18-hole courses, bass or tilapia fishing in one of the popular dams, or soak away any stress in the soothing mineral waters of the hot springs. Don’t miss the chance of a memorable wildlife experience, or the chance of ‘ticking’ one of the nearly 400 species of bird that have been identified within the Amajuba District.

The ‘isiqu’, the interlocking brass necklace of Zulu monument Impondo Zankomo at Isandlwana, represents the wooden interlocking necklace that would have been awarded by the king to an individual or regiment for bravery in battle.

Today the legacy of these critical, bloodsoaked conflicts lives peacefully within the battle sites, historic towns, national monuments and museums. With more recorded battlefields than anywhere else in Africa, one is never far from a reminder of these battles and this region offers visitors the opportunity to discover another facet of the Zulu Kingdom’s past. A good place to start is the impressive Talana Museum, set in a 20-acre heritage park on the outskirts of

Dundee, which depicts the varied history of the region. Visitors to the museum and this new complex are able to interact with the crafters, guides and storytellers and are soon steeped in the mystique of the traditional way of life and how it has adapted over time to meet the demands of outside and progressive forces. This living village portrays Zulu culture and lifestyle. The live-in Zulu family explain customs, traditions, culture and their lifestyle to visitors – no matter what your background, you will leave Kwakunje with an understanding of what is meant when people say “it was like this” and why the fiercely proud and independent people, the Zulus, are proud of their heritage.

UMZINYATHI

Rich in history, culture & striking beauty

UMZINYATHI IS A HISTORICALLY RICH REGION, RENOWNED FOR ITS NATURAL BEAUTY. THE DISTRICT IS SITUATED IN NORTHWEST KWAZULU-NATAL, BORDERED BY THE MIDLANDS IN THE WEST, THE DRAKENSBERG IN THE NORTH, AND ZULULAND TO THE EAST. The Umzinyathi region bears memories of the wars that swept across South Africa between 1879 and 1902, but its history starts long before this. The legendary King Shaka and the Zulu nation created upheaval among local tribes, the Voortrekkers crossed the mountains to settle on the land, while the British colonists had settled at what was known as ‘Port Natal’, now Durban. What followed was an era of war, as the Zulus, Voortrekkers and British clashed in some of the bloodiest battles in the history of South Africa, shaping the towns and villages of this region. The wars were fought over land and sovereignty, and played out over almost 100 years. Battle of Blood River/Ncome: 16 December 1838 The most significant battle of the Voortrekker-Zulu conflict took place 48 kms east of Dundee at what became known as

34 www - WHAT, WHERE & WHEN Aug-Sept 2016

‘Blood River/Ncome’. After Voortrekker leader Piet Retief and his party were killed at King Dingane’s capital of Mgungundlovu, Andries Pretorius led a commando consisting of 464 men to a strategic site on the banks of the Ncome (‘Praiseworthy’) River. The Voortrekkers established a defensive position with their 64 wagons (known as a laager) and awaited the Zulu attack, which took place on Sunday, 16 December 1838. Between 12 000 and 15 000 warriors attacked, and in the ensuing battle approximately 3 000 are estimated to have been killed. So many died in the river that it ran red with blood. The Voortrekkers were convinced that their victory was as a result of Divine intervention, leading to the anniversary of the Battle being commemorated in later years as a public holiday. It is now remembered as the Day of Reconciliation.

NORTH COAST KwaZulu-Natal’s North Coast is a treasure trove of history and culture, richly imprinted with Zulu, European and Indian influences. Its unspoilt natural environment, lush tropical coastline and warm waters have attracted a unique mix of luxury resorts and affordable holiday accommodation, allowing its guests to keep in touch with nature, while enjoying the degree of luxury they deserve.

For more info check out the website www.dolphincoast.kzn.org.za The warm Indian Ocean plays host to the common bottlenose dolphin which can often be seen frolicking in the waves from many of the secluded bays and golden beaches. The patches of natural coastal forest give way to endlessly rolling hills covered with sugarcane.

The ‘Shaka Trees’ found close to Shaka’s grave in the village of KwaDukuza are more than 200 years old. Among them is the ‘Indaba Tree’, where Shaka is said to have held council, and the ‘Assassination Tree’, where his demise was plotted. 36 www - WHAT, WHERE & WHEN Aug-Sept 2016

The town of KwaDukuza is the centre of an extensive sugar-cane growing area and the KwaDukuza Museum, located opposite the site of King Shaka Memorial, is dedicated to the sugar industry and the cultural heritage of the early settlers of the town Stanger. The Morewood Memorial commemorates the life and work of Sir Edmund Morewood, who grew the first commercial cane in South Africa and was the founder of the South African sugar industry. When his first crop of sugar cane reached maturity in1851, he made the first sugar ever produced in this country, in a primitive factory which once stood where the garden now lies. The picturesque garden provides an interesting heritage site which has been designated National Monument status. Not only is KwaDukuza built on the original site of King Shaka’s Royal settlement

called Dukuza, it also boasts being the home of the first African to win the Nobel Peace Prize, Chief Albert Luthuli. Take the time to walk through Chief Luthuli’s original 1927 home where he formed his visionary ideas and met top ANC leaders like Nelson Mandela in secret, and listen to his speech made in 1961 in Oslo, Norway, when he accepted the Nobel Peace Prize. Being once part of the great Zulu empire built by King Shaka, the North Coast offers many opportunities for multi-cultural heritage experiences, such as walking the ‘muti’ (African medicine) trail through the Harold Johnson Nature Reserve, or visiting nearby historic battle sites such as Fort Pearson and the Ultimatum Tree.

UKHAHLAMBA

DRAKENSBERG The awe inspiring Drakensberg Mountains, just by virtue of topography, are an adventurer’s paradise and offer a wealth of outdoor activities to satisfy all fitness levels and age groups. This 243 000 hectare mountainous region, named ‘Ukhahlamba’ by the Zulu people, well deserves its international status as a World Heritage Site and offers massive cliffs towering over riverine bush, lush evergreen forests, cascading waterfalls and mountain streams, as well as hiking paths that invite exploration.

DID YOU KNOW?

Champagne Castle, the second highest peak in KZN at 3 377 meters, is said to have been named in the 1860s by two intrepid mountaineers. They were about to celebrate their long haul by popping a bottle of champagne, but as fate would have it, the guide dropped the bottle on a rock – and in that moment Champagne Castle in the heart of the Drakensberg was christened. 38 www - WHAT, WHERE & WHEN Aug-Sept 2016

For more info check out the website www.drakensberg.kzn.org.za These mountains, with an average height 2 900 metres, are popular with hikers and mountaineers… and not just for their majesty and beauty, but for the accessible plateau and the numerous passes and slopes that make for some of the best and most challenging hiking in the province. The highest peak on the KZN side of the escarpment, at 3 451 meters is Mafadi. Slightly higher, at 3 482 meters, is Thaba Ntlenyana in Lesotho, the highest mountain in Africa south of Kilimanjaro. The fact that its name means’ nice little mountain’ is a bit of an understatement! The entire Drakensberg is riddled with incredible waterfalls, rock pools, mountain streams, caves, crisp mountain air, and special spaces that draw both visitors to South Africa and locals alike. When hiking, be sure to explore the many caves and overhangs as a number of these are the ancient canvas for San paintings, one of the Drakensberg’s greatest cultural treasures. Some 20 000 individual rock paintings have

been recorded at 500 different sites between Royal Natal National Park in the north and Bushman’s Nek in the south. Subjects of the paintings range from animals (mainly eland) and humans, to ox-wagons and even mounted men with rifles. Pop into the Himeville Museum near Underberg and check out the open-air exhibition of settler and agricultural history, the display rooms housing military, African memorabilia and a valued collection of San artifacts and an insightful interpretation of the life and times of the San. Built in 1899 as the last of Natal’s loop-holed forts before housing prisoners until 1972, it is considered one of the best rural museums in the country.

EXPERIENCE THE BERG AND MIDLANDS OF KWAZULU-NATAL The Harry Gwala District incorporates part of the Southern Drakensberg and Midlands of KZN. The region shares part of the unique mountain ranges in the world (The Drakensberg World heritage site). The Harry Gwala District is well endowed with natural resources and relatively unspoilt natural environments. Activities such as horse riding, mountain biking, river rafting, abseiling and canoeing are available. Tourism within the rural areas brings out the culture and charm of the local people with cultural tours offering spectacular scenery. RAIL TOURISM Sisonke and the Paton Country Narrow Gauge Railway have developed a fledgling steam rail tourism sector based on the existence of the underutilised Cape Natal Railway line and the remnants of the narrow gauge line from Ixopo to Carisbrooke with a proposed extension to UMzimkhulu. This steam train offer a chance to experience the beauty of the KwaZulu-Natal Midlands and Southern Drakensberg, while the off train experiences will touch the ears of all people fortunate enough to enjoy this journey. MISSION TOURISM Harry Gwala District is an important site for a complex of monasteries and missions that the Trappist monks created in the 19th century across the Province of KwaZulu-Natal. The Missions constitute a unique cultural and heritage tourism asset in the Harry Gwala District and provides an important opportunity for story telling in that, among the greatest. SOUTH COAST From golden beaches and blue lagoons to rocky coves and subtropical forests, the KwaZulu-Natal South Coast remains a favourite destination. And it’s no wonder, with a variety of outdoor pursuits ranging from golf, to hiking, mountain biking, diving, whale watching and almost everything in between, visitors to this region will be spoilt for choice.

The Oribi Gorge ‘Wild Swing’, situated at the top of Lehr’s Falls, is said to be the highest swing in Africa with a drop of 165 m which is equivalent to 55 storeys! 42 www - WHAT, WHERE & WHEN Aug-Sept 2016

For more info check out the website www.tourismsouthcoast.co.za With September being Tourism Month, it’s a great opportunity for visitors to look beyond the obvious and include some local history and culture into their South Coast experience. Who would know that Umkomaas, the sea side town which serves as the gateway to the famed Aliwal Shoal, was named Umkomazi by King Shaka himself? During a hunting sojourn in 1928, on one of his royal processions with his ‘Impi’ (warriors), he saw a number of cow whales and calves basking in the shallows a short distance out to sea from the river mouth - the name Umkomazi, literally translated means ‘The watering place of the whales’. And that it was the discovery of marble deposits on the banks of the Mzimkhulu River (a Zulu name meaning ‘place of the great kraal’) in 1867 that first attracted settlers to Port Shepstone. The river mouth soon became a port for the export of marble, lime and sugar. The harbour was developed in 1886, but the port fell into disuse after the railway line reached the town in 1901 - this and other history of the town is depicted in the Port Shepstone Museum, which has a maritime focus. For a more current cultural experience,

diarise the annual Amakhono Heritage Festival taking place on 18 September. In addition to the good vibes with indigenous, traditional music and dance, a traditional dress code and the sale of beautiful local crafts throughout the day, a highlight will be the launch of the Nyandezulu Tourism Route which incorporates some of the South Coast’s most spectacular rural scenery and hinterland offerings. The Ramsgate Literary Festival takes place at the Ramsgate Whale Deck with, a candlelight poetry and story telling evening on 22 September, and on the 23rd, nine guest speakers will present talks and guests will be entertained by the Tangent Strings Duo who will perform at the ‘authors’ lunch’. A selection of guest authors’ recent publications as well as a selection of local authors’ works will be available.

ELEPHANT COAST The Elephant Coast incorporates the best of both land and sea safari experiences, with its world-class conservation areas that include Africa’s oldest game reserve, the Hluhluwe iMfolozi Park, and the iSimangaliso Wetland Park, South Africa’s first proclaimed World Heritage Site. . Few areas in Africa have the incredible diversity found in this narrow strip of land, approximately 200 kilometers long and just 70 kilometers wide, and home to an incredible 21 different ecosystems.

DID YOU KNOW?

This area was called the Elephant Coast after the large herd of African elephant that lived in the region for centuries – they were once hunted out, but have been reintroduced in recent years and are now readily seen in many of the reserves in the region. These include the Hluhluwe iMfolosi Game Reserve, Mkuze Game Reserve, some of the private game reserves as well as the iSimangaliso Wetland Park.

For more info check out the website www.elephantcoast.kzn.org.za The iSimangaliso Wetland Park is one of the jewels of South Africa’s coastline, with a unique mosaic of ecosystems, from beaches and coral reefs to wetlands, swamps, woodlands and coastal forests it supports an amazing diversity of animal, bird and marine life. The Park stretches from Kosi Bay in the north, to Lake St Lucia in the south, and supports more species of animal than the better-known and much larger Kruger National Park and Okavango Delta – from the country’s largest population of hippos and crocodiles to giant Leatherback turtles, black rhino, leopard, and a vast array of bird and marine life. It is estimated that more than 530 species of birds use the wetland and other areas of the Lake St Lucia region, with tens of thousands of flamingos and thousands of ducks seasonally being seen. With 36 species, this area has the highest diversity of amphibians in South Africa. It has been said that nowhere else in the world can one find hippopotamuses, crocodiles and sharks sharing the same waters!

Bay lake system and is a pristine tropical paradise of crystal clear water, marshland, swamp and coastal forests that is home to about 250 species of bird – most iconic is the Palmnut Vulture, a Red Data species and the only fruit-eating vulture in the world, that can be found in the raffia forests of the upper lakes. Kosi Bay supports a great variety of fish and other aquatic fauna due to the different physical characteristics of the lakes. A characteristic sight on the estuary is the fish kraals - the rural people in the area use traditional fishing methods to harvest the numerous fish species in the estuary. Fish kraals or traps, which have been passed down from father to son, are spread throughout the estuary, providing an important source of protein to the local people.

Experience vibrant Zulu culture, walk through lush indigenous forests and experience Africa’s magnificent wildlife up close… and take a refreshing dip in the waters of the Indian Ocean. This is Zululand, where you feel the warm embrace of Africa’s sun, are welcomed with wide smiles by the local people, and the memory of your experiences linger long after you have departed, where hiking and nature trails abound and game viewing opportunities are never far out of reach.

The KwaZulu Cultural Museum at Ondini, which was opened in 1984, houses one of the most representative collections of the rich cultural heritage of the region and is famous for its collection of beadwork. There are also a number of items which belonged to King Cetswayo who ruled the Zulu nation during the Anglo-Zulu war of 1879.

For more info check out the website www.zululand.kzn.org.za Zululand is an area rich in symbolism and tradition, where the age-old Zulu culture still remains active today. Ulundi, known as ‘The City of Heritage’, offers many opportunities for visitors to experience this, from a visit to the nearby KwaZulu Cultural Museum in Ondini to the eMakhosini Opathe Heritage Park. Set in what is known as the Valley of Kings, it incorporates the Ophathe Game Reserve and the eMakhosini Valley. This large and beautiful heritage park recaptures the cultural heritage of the Zulu people and the natural landscape of the valley at the time of King Shaka. It is considered to be the birthplace of the Zulus, where Shaka spent much of his youth, and where Dingane fought the Voortrekkers. In 2003, the only remaining Zulu King - King Goodwill Zwelithini, opened a memorial, the eMakhosini Monument, dedicated to the spirit of his ancestors. . huge bronze imbiza, or beer pot – symbolic of friendship in the Zulu culture. Another popular cultural experience is a visit to the Mona Market in Nongoma, the royal city of Zululand. Visitors are enthralled by the atmosphere of the town, with its traditional way of life, rural simplicity and where informal trading plays an important role. of The Zulu King’s Reed Dance, the uMkhosi woMhlanga, is a traditional ceremony of maidens held annually in September. Maidens from all over the province and from as far afield as the Kingdom of Swaziland flock to the eNyokeni Royal Palace to participate in the traditional dance of the maidens. This ceremony is still close to the heart of many traditional leaders and citizens. Africa’s sun, are welcomed with wide smiles by the local people, and the memory of your experiences linger long after you have departed, where hiking and nature trails abound and game viewing opportunities are never far out of reach. www - WHAT, WHERE & WHEN Aug-Sept 2016 47
