NDABO KHOZA CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER: TOURISM KWAZULU-NATAL
KwaZuluNatal has had an incredible year so far. We recently hosted two major events that saw thousands of people come from all over the continent to enjoy some of our wonderful hospitality, spectacular winter weather and overall provincial splendor. This year’s Vodacom Durban July brought record breaking numbers and excitement to the province, when over 50 000 socialites, fashionistas and horse racing enthusiasts descended on KZN from all over the country, and the rest of Africa. Accommodation establishments, restaurants and places of entertainment were full to capacity with patrons, whose direct spend was estimated to well over R440 million. The race increased its turnover by 10.62% more than last year. The global television stations such as E! Entertainment Television featured highlights of this event over and over again, giving our destination immeasurable global exposure. Soon after that we welcomed top international artists from across the African continent and the globe, accompanied by the world’s media, to celebrate the biggest music awards ceremony in Africa, the MTV Africa Music Awards, affectionately known as the MAMAs. There was no better place to spend Mandela Day than in KZN, in the company of the world biggest musical talents, who not only entertained the world, but also took time to walk in the footsteps of the late great Nelson Mandela, and spent time at the Inanda Heritage Route giving their 67

minutes to the surrounding communities. Some also went to the Mandela Capture Site for that unforgettable photo moment. As we head towards Women’s Month, the fun never stops in the Zulu Kingdom. American R & B crooner, Trey Songz, will be bringing his soulful sounds to the Moses Mabhida Stadium on 8 August. This will be followed by the multi-award winning duo, Toni Braxton and Babyface, who will close the month on a high note when they bring their Love, Marriage and Divorce tour to Durban. In August, we will also be focusing on positioning KZN to the South American market i.e. Brazil and Argentina. We will welcome members of the media and tourism trade for some familiarisation trips around the province, where they will explore some of our world class underwater adventure activities, our game reserves, rich culture and heritage sites as well as film the location of the world most unique natural phenomenon, the Sardine Run. September is Tourism Month, and this year we will be celebrating the abundance of tourism experiences that we offer to the world. The UNWTO theme for this year is “A billion tourists, a billion opportunities” and the South African theme is “A million new experiences await”. We therefore encourage the people of KwaZulu-Natal to participate by exploring and enjoying the myriad of activities and hidden gems of our province. This year, we say to you, “Go out there and explore the untold stories of KZN and spread the word about our exceptional destination”.
The Midlands Meander will be celebrating 30 years of existence. Visitors will be spoilt for choice with tons of activities perfect for a family getaway. Durban Day also promises to be bigger and better this year with a sizzling line up of performers, so pack up your family and welcome Spring in style on 6 September at People’s Park, Moses Mabhida Stadium. For those of you looking for the next glamourous event, The BMW Polo Series at Eshongweni on 13 September will fit the bill. R & B singer-songwriter, Brian McKnight, will also be performing at the Moses Mabhida Stadium on 16 September. Be sure to capture those exciting moments and continue follow us on all our social networks, Facebook (KZNTourism), Instagram (@tourismkzn_official), Twitter (@Tourism KZN), YouTube (KwaZulu-Natal Tourism Authority) and Pintrest (KZN Tourism), to be updated on all our upcoming events. Do not forget to #GottaLuvKZN and you just might win yourself tickets for you and a friend to our many exciting events or even a weekend away to the exceptional Zulu Kingdom. Recently, our followers won themselves tickets to the ECR House and Garden Show and the MAMAs both held in Durban in the past few weeks. We look forward to welcoming you to the exceptional Zulu Kingdom, a million new experiences await!

HERITAGE is described as a practice or custom that is passed from one generation to another, it can be tangible or intangible, a creative expression such as music or a language, the food we eat, the craft we practice or the memories we preserve - our heritage gives us a sense of identity and belonging, September marks the annual celebration of Heritage Month in South Africa and provides a wonderful opportunity for all of us to recognize and reflect on all aspects of our unique cultures, our historical inheritance and our rich diversity. Nelson Mandela once said the following in a Heritage Day speech: “When our first democratically-elected government decided to make Heritage Day one of our national days, we did so because we knew that our rich and varied cultural heritage has a profound power to help build our new nation”. This year’s theme is ‘Celebrating South Africa’s Craft, our Heritage’ and particular tribute will be paid to the crafters of our nation, many of whom are found in the rural areas, who have made a significant contribution to the development of our country’s rich heritage. KwaZulu Natal is indeed blessed with an extraordinary array of heritage experiences, from museums preserving history, to natural wonders such as and the two World Heritage sites at UKhahlamba Drakenserg Park and Isimanaliso WetlandPark. Enjoy Heritage month, identify with a bygone era and visit local icons of history.

August is Women’s Month and there’s no better way to honour the struggles, sacrifices and successes of women than by enjoying the banquet of drama, dance, dialogue, music and entertainment. All this is on offer at the annual Playhouse Company’s SA Women’s Festival (SAWAF) in Durban between 14 and 22 August. Highlights include Lara Foote’s acclaimed production, Fishers of Hope, a Gala Concert starring Thandiswa Mazwai, Aviva Pelham’s Santa’s Story and Thembi Mtshali’s powerfully autobiographical A Woman in Waiting. For more information about SAWAF visit www.playhousecompany. com or call the festival hotline 031-3699456. All bookings are through Computicket or through the Playhouse box office on 0313699540/9596. Also at the Playhouse, the annual Shall We Dance ballroom and Latin American showcase celebrates its 23rd season in the Playhouse Opera theatre between 11 – 19 September. Featuring approximately 100 of the region’s most exciting dancers as young as 13 years old as well as top awardwinning international industry professionals. Early booking at Computicket is advised. Durban’s KickstArt Productions is gearing up for their third production of the year: the engaging mini-musical-comedy, Snoopy: The Musical, based on the ever-popular Peanuts comic strips which comes to the Elizabeth Sneddon Theatre from 6 until 23 August. With direction by Steven Stead and Charon Williams-Ros, musical direction by Justin Southey, and design by Greg King, Snoopy features all the familiar cartoon characters. Carol Trench makes a welcome return to Durban to play the headstrong and outspoken Lucy; Bryan Hiles is the cartoon’s protagonist, the melancholic, thoughtful and misunderstood Charlie Brown; Steven Stead plays the title role of Charlie Brown’s eccentric pet dog, Snoopy; Caitlin Kilburn is the upbeat tomboy Peppermint Patty; Graeme Wicks is Lucy’s brother, the insecure Linus, Katy Moore as the effervescent, ditzy Sally Brown and Evashnee Pillay is Snoopy’s silent sidekick, assistant and bosom buddy, the small scrappy yellow bird, Woodstock. Shows are Tues-Sat @7pm; Sat @ 1.30pm; Sun @ 1.30pm. Book through Computicket. The Centre for Creative Arts (UKZN) presents the 17th annual Jomba! Contemporary Dance Experience at the Sneddon 14 | www - WHAT, WHERE & WHEN Aug-Sept 2015
between 26 August and 7 September. For information about this feast of challenging dance productions, log onto www.cca. ukzn.ac.za. Booking is through Computicket. Also to be seen back at The Sneddon, is audience favourite Andre The Hilarious Hypnotist who celebrates 21 years onstage with his trademark brand of dry humour and a truck load of new suggestions for fans. Come celebrate with the widely popular entertainer from 8 to 20 September! Performances are at 19h30 (Tuesdays to Saturdays) and 15h00 on Sundays. Andre then plays the Hexagon Theatre in Pietermaritzburg from 29 September to 3 October. Booking for both seasons is through Computicket 0861 915 8000 or online at www.computicket.com The Catalina Theatre on Wilson’s Wharf has much to offer theatre goers over the two months ahead. The Working Man, a multifaceted three-hander using elements of storytelling, live music and physical theatre, depicts the life story of Sipho, young man who dreams of becoming a dancer but is pressured, by both the community in which he lives and his father, to work in the mines because that’s what a “real man” does. Each episode in his story is constructed in a minimalist fashion, using nothing more than two black blocks, the actors’ physicality, and monologues, to illustrate the different fragments of Sipho’s life. Written by Sboniso Msimango and directed by Brandon Moulder, the play is performed by Nqobile Mthembu, Sboniso Msimango and Mfundiseni Ndwalane, and runs until 9 August. Next up is Make Salaam and Laugh starring Masood Boomgaard and Yaaseen Barnes plays at the Catalina from 14-16 August, with shows at 8pm. Billed as South Africa’s zaniest Muslim stand-up comedians, the “haha-laal” duo offer prime comedy entertainment for the whole family to enjoy a fun night out together. The Warrick Frank Drama Academy presents
What A Crack! at the Catalina from 26 to 30 August. Drawing on personal experiences, stereotypes are explored and overcome in the modern day South Africa in this fun piece, which is co-written by seasoned Durban actor Warrick Frank and Courtney Smith, who makes his debut here to the performing arts. The pair draw on their cultural backgrounds and unite in an explosive clash of cultures, joined onstage in this lively four-hander by Leigh Kaladin and Melanie Kisten. Not to be missed!
Due to public demand, Clinton Marius’s record-breaking radio comedy, Lollipop Lane, which delighted thousands of fans for four years, continues with the serialized stage show version of the soapie – bringing back to life the whacky gallery of folk from the block of flats where the lift doesn’t quite go to the top floor. Following on from the show’s first two staged productions, The Big Biscuit Bake-Off and The Beauty Spot, the third in the series to be recorded before a live audience and subsequently broadcast on Tape Aids for the Blind’s DSTV channel is subtitled There’s Something About Shirley. Funded by the National Arts Council, this plays at the Catalina from 25 to 27 September. Lollipop Lane’s tree-hugging, dolphin-whispering Shirley McDoodle will go to any length to protect animals and the environment. But this time, her all-or-nothing activism lands her in hot water…. Book at Computicket and be part of the fun. The annual Hilton Arts Festival is set to run at Hilton College in the KZN Midlands between 17 and 20 September. For programme details and booking info visit www.hiltonfestival.co.za. And for information about the KZN Philharmonic’s eight-concert 2015 Spring Season of Symphony concerts which opens in the Durban City Hall on 27 August and runs each Thursday evening, email kznphil@kznphil.org.za, visit www.kznphil.org.za or call 031-369 9438.

Visit some of the iconic places that illustrate various facets of our epic history and enjoy a fascinating and insightful journey of into a bygone era.
For more info check out the website www.durbanexperience.co.za Durban’s City Hall was completed in 1910, and is over a 100 years old. A fine example of Edwardian Neo-baroque architecture, the dome of the City Hall was designed by Stanley G. Hudson, who was inspired by the city hall in Belfast, Northern Ireland. Located on the second floor, the Durban Art Gallery houses an impressive collection of both international and South African art. A number of museums in Durban offer an amazing insight into our history and heritage, preserved and brought to life (see opening times and locations on our feature page 11). Killie Campbell Africana Museum, located in the former Dutch-style home of Dr. Killie Campbell, a great collector of South African history houses pieces of Zulu art, books and photographs that tell the history of the Zulu’s and Natal, an ethnology collection, pieces of furniture and precious sculptures. Durban’s Natural Science Museum, located in the majestic City Hall building showcases Africa’s wild life and the chance to see taxidermies like an elephant, wild dogs, a leopard, birds and insects. Don’t miss the popular galleries with stuffed birds, flamingos, penguins, ostriches, and giant insect replicas. Find out more about the early history of this region through interesting replicas of Durban style settlements at the Old Court House Museum. Feel the colonial past in a beautiful building that was once a Court House, located very close to the City Hall. Kwa Muhle Museum once housed the
Native Administration Department. Today this museum documents the troubled Apartheid era, describing the harsh life in that period. The exhibited photos show images of a city in search of its identity during changing times. The Natal Maritime Museum symbolizes the city’s importance as a maritime trade centre and is housed in three floating ships: a minesweeper dating from World War Two, a steam tug and a pilot boat. Visit the Inanda Heritage Route which starts at the Inanda Township, home to the Ohlange Institute, founded by John Dube, the first president of the ANC. The immaculately restored. Inanda Seminary, founded in 1869 by missionary Mary Edwards, was the oldest African private schools for girls. Ebuhleni Village is one of the headquarters of the Shembe Church. The church has over 2 million followers and was founded 100 years ago. The Phoenix Settlement, located nearby, was where icon of peace, Mahatma Gandhi, developed his philosophy of passive resistance. His home has been restored and is now set up as a monument. Durban’s Rickshaw Pullers have been a popular feature of the city, and especially the beach front area, since the early 1890’s. The colourful rickshaws and the interestingly dressed men with beaded costumes and horned head gear, where first introduced as a means of transport and by 1903 an estimated two thousand rickshaw pullers were operating in Durban, taking daily commuters
and tourists through the city. The magnificent Juma Masjid Mosque, the largest mosque in the Southern hemisphere, dominates Durban’s central Indian district. It’s gilt-domed minarets tower over the bustling commercial area, but inside the marbled worship hall is peaceful and boasts a simple elegance. Around the mosque, on Dr Yusaf Dadoo (Grey Street), are several Indian food outlets, most offering the uniquely Durban ‘bunnychow’ (half a loaf of bread scooped out and filled with curry). Also in the area is the brightly painted Victoria Street Market offering incense, henna tattoos, spices and other exotic goods. Durban Warwick Market. The history of these Markets in Durban goes back to 1860. The original market was an open-air affair. In 1876 the Durban Town Council provided a Market Building at the corner of Monty Naicker (Pine) and Dorothy Nyembe (Gardiner), behind the old Post Office building, and in 1901 a new Borough Market was built on the thin sliver of land, previously owned by the Railways, between Commercial, Railway and Monty Naicker Streets. These are just few of the many places in Durban that have been preserved so that we can reflect on our heritage. ….And then of course there are the myriad of attractions that have made Durban the favourite playground that it offering a unique set of experiences to visitors and locals alike.

1000 Hills
When Europeans arrived at the Port of Natal in 1825, the Valley of 1000 Hills was a remote and isolated area teeming with game. WS Field was one of the first Europeans to settle in 1851, and leopards were said to occasionally spend the night on the veranda of the Field homestead in what is now Kloof. Within a few years a wagon route opened up between Durban and the interior, close to what is now the Old Main Road. The establishment of the railway line linking the goldfields with the port rapidly followed the discovery of gold in the Transvaal in the 1880s, and the rail and road traffic through the 1000 Hills increased. The Valley of 1000 Hills is named after the many hills and valleys which rise up from the banks of the Umgeni River as it flows from the distant Drakensberg mountains to the Indian Ocean. The valley has been home to the Zulu people for centuries, with many continuing to practice and live their unique traditional lifestyle. Their colourful ceremonies and expressive, artistic culture give this area its vibrant atmosphere and creative energy. Explore the roots of Zulu culture by taking an organised tour deep into tribal lands. Witness ancient Zulu ceremonies, as traditional diviners ‘throw the bones’ and communicate with their spiritual ancestors at PheZulu Safari Park. PheZulu also offers traditional Zulu dancing and cultural shows, as well as game drives, local curios, wonderful views across the valley and a crocodile and snake park. On the crest of the hills overlooking the valley are leafy suburbs and village centres, which have astonishing views and a year round holiday climate of warm summers and cool winters. These villages offer all the creature comforts one would expect including spas, B&Bs, fine dining, sophisticated shopping centres, outdoor adventure and local arts and

THE PUZZLE PLACE started in 1991 as Wood Magic, a family business with Ian Courtney at the helm. After eighteen years in the corporate market, Ian Courtney started making kiddies toys in his garage, with his two year old daughter as inspiration. These toys were marketed via flea markets and a reputation for quality was achieved. After the purchase of a scroll saw, the toys became puzzles as well, and through a series of progressions the Three Dimensional puzzles evolved. These puzzles proved too complex for the children and so the target market shifted to the adults and the puzzles became more challenging... They have been creating executive puzzles and games for the past 22 years for the Corporate and personal market from a small shop in the Valley of a 1000 Hills in KwaZulu Natal, South Africa. This has restricted their market so they are now open to the world-wide market with purchasing of their products online with the security of Pay-Pal. The shop is still open 7 days a week from 9:00am to 4:30pm and they also trade at the Shongweni Farmers Market every Saturday 6:30am to 10:30am.

Umhlanga Sapphire Coast The town of Amanzimtoti (meaning ‘sweet waters’ in Zulu) is said to have been named by the great Zulu King Shaka after tasting the fresh water that flows out of the hills at this scenic spot. It is situated on the coast a short drive south of Durban. This part of the coast is a popular destination for scuba divers who come to explore Aliwal Shoal, a fossilised sand dune that lies 5km off the Umkomaas river mouth. A myriad of warm water reef fish and cold water fish converge on Aliwal Shoal to create a kaleidoscope of colour. For those who prefer to remain on terra firma, the beaches of the Sapphire Coast provide plenty of opportunities to enjoy swimming, surfing or fishing. Nature lovers can explore the Amanzimoti Bird Sanctuary or stroll in one of the nature reserves. For a taste of local history or culture, there are a number of arts and crafts stores offering a selection of handmade goods, and the Adams Mission College, founded in 1884, is open daily for a look into the past. A different kind of heat will see more than a 1 000 runners on 14 August tackle a brutal 6-km climb to World’s View, enjoy a 2-km respite, before hurtling downhill to the finish at Voortrekker High School. Better known as the Capital Climb, the event has been run since 1976 and is one of the shortest, toughest and most scenic races on the calendar.
For more info check out the website www.midlands.kzn.org.za The popular Spar-sponsored women’s race over 5 km or 10 km, is schedule for August 23 at The Oval, one of the country’s most picturesque cricket grounds in South Africa, in Alexandra Park, Pietermaritzburg. On 30 August, it’s time for the Mandela Marathon that, as the name suggests, celebrates the legacy of the iconic statesman. Starting in Pietermaritzburg, it ends at the Mandela Capture Site near Howick.
Did you know?
The Mandela Marathon starts at the Manaye Hall in Imbali where the statesman made his last speech as a free man, and ends at the capture site near Howick where he was arrested before his 27-year incarceration.
29 August is Wildsfees day at Voortrekker High School, where meat is the focus, much to the delight of carnivores. The event is also a platform for endangered Afrikaans cultural practices, including “Volkspele” or throwing the “jukskei”.
The ever-popular Hilton Arts Festival from 17-20 September at Hilton College that brings an array of award-winning productions to local residents. Some of the productions originate from the Grahamstown Arts Festival and may well make their KZN debut. The arrival of spring also signals activity on the agricultural front with the ever-popular Nedbank-sponsored Eston Show drawing the crowds to the Beaumont Eston Farmers Club on 28 and 30 August. Speaking of matters agricultural, don’t forget the early-morning Farmers Market in Pietermaritzburg and the Karkloof morning market, just outside Howick.
September signals the official start to spring, but the green theme only gets going towards the end of the month with the Sunday Tribune Garden and Leisure Show from 2427 September at the Royal Showgrounds. The other popular event closely associated with the garden show, The Witness Open Gardens initiative, will take place on all four weekends in October. www - WHAT, WHERE & WHEN Aug-Sept 2015 | 29

Knowledgeable, friendly and accredited local guides are available and guarantee hour upon hour of captivating company. Did you know?
Dundee was originally a farm owned by Peter Smith, who in 1882 named it after his Scottish hometown. The town is steeped in a fascinating history with a strong military flavour and was the scene of the first engagement of the Anglo-Boer War which took place on and around Talana Hill.
The King Shaka’s Way Route takes visitors from the coastal region of Stanger, through Eshowe, Melmoth and on to Ulundi, and offers world-class game reserves, heritage sites and Zulu culture and tradition. The Remembrance Route begins from Pietermaritzburg running through Greytown, Tugela Ferry, and Dundee, and onto the Ithala Game Reserve. The Rifleman’s Road Route starts from Volkrust in the northwest, and runs down through Newcastle, Dundee, Ladysmith, Colenso and Escourt.
the Warrior’s Trek Route offers stunning scenery, warm mineral fountains, battlefields, game viewing and culture galore – visit the Ncome Museum, dedicated to fallen Zulu warriors and to Zulu culture. The Siege Salute Route has a high concentration of historical sites encompassing Anglo-Boer War and several Voortrekker- Zulu War sites. Major towns along the route are Ladysmith, Colenso, Escourt and Winterton. This route has an abundance of beautiful landscapes, wildlife, birdlife and adventures. Dundee is the centre of the Red Soldiers’ Route, and the impressive Talana Museum, set in a 20-acre heritage park on the outskirts of the town, depicts the varied history of the region. Battle sites on this route include Isandlwana and Fugitive’s Drift.

UMZINYATHI
Rich in history, culture & striking beauty
UMZINYATHI IS A HISTORICALLY RICH REGION, RENOWNED FOR ITS NATURAL BEAUTY. THE DISTRICT IS SITUATED IN NORTHWEST KWAZULU-NATAL, BORDERED BY THE MIDLANDS IN THE WEST, THE DRAKENSBERG IN THE NORTH, AND ZULULAND TO THE EAST. The Umzinyathi region bears memories of the wars that swept across South Africa between 1879 and 1902, but its history starts long before this. The legendary King Shaka and the Zulu nation created upheaval among local tribes, the Voortrekkers crossed the mountains to settle on the land, while the British colonists had settled at what was known as ‘Port Natal’, now Durban. What followed was an era of war, as the Zulus, Voortrekkers and British clashed in some of the bloodiest battles in the history of South Africa, shaping the towns and villages of this region. The wars were fought over land and sovereignty, and played out over almost 100 years. Today people travel from around the world to revisit these momentous events in our history.

Rorke’s Drift Rorke’s Drift, located 45 kilometres southeast of Dundee, is the site of one of the most famous battles of the Anglo-Zulu War. It is a tranquil village nestled at the foot of a rocky outcrop, a few kilometres from the Mzinyathi River. At the entrance to the village is a traditional Zulu umuzi (village), with beehive huts encircling an Nguni cattle kraal. (main photo pictured above). The umuzi offers visitors the chance to truly experience traditional Zulu lifestyle; be captivated by the pure energy of Zulu dancers, milk an Nguni cow, taste home-brewed Zulu beer and sleep the night in a beehive hut. Further into the village is the Rorke’s Drift Battlefield and Museum, which has attracted much acclaim for its displays of the Anglo-Zulu War.

NORTH COAST The North Coast was once part of the great Zulu empire built by King Shaka, and the region’s multi-cultural heritage makes for many memorable experiences. Visit one of the historic sites in the region, such as the Ultimatum Tree or Fort Pearson, or the burial place of King Shaka at Kwa-Dukuza. Enjoy the warm hospitality of the people of the region, as they proudly show you their heritage.
For more info check out the website www.dolphincoast.kzn.org.za
Did you know?
You can walk through the garden at the Luthuli Museum and sit beneath the shade of the same jacaranda tree where Chief Luthuli met with US Senator Robert Kennedy and you can listen to the speech he made in 1961 in Oslo, Norway, when he accepted the Nobel Peace Prize.
This region is infused with the presence of the Zulu kings, and the pioneering spirit of the early European and Indian settlers – a kaleidoscope of culture, nature and adventure. As expected, the region abounds with Zulu legends – Shaka’s Rock, named after a rocky outcrop believed to have been used by Shaka as a lookout, is a small residential village with a wonderfully graceful stretch of sandy beach that is home to an inviting tidal pool bordered by rocky cliffs. Salt Rock, situated just north of Shaka’s Rock and Ballito, originates from King Shaka’s days when his handmaidens used to collect dried salt off the rocks at low tide. Umhlali, which lies just inland from Salt Rock and trendy Ballito, was established by British and Scottish Byrne settlers in 1850 and was the site of a fort which led to it originally being called Fort William by the settlers. The town, with its beautiful buildings, ‘old world’ charm and distinctly colonial atmosphere, is home to the Umhlali Museum housing a variety of historical memorabilia including an old steam locomotive originally used for transporting cane to the sugar mill.
This region is also home to a large Indian community, so look out for their temples, sample their spicy foodstuffs or shop for fresh produce at any of the numerous markets. The town of KwaDukuza is the home to King Shaka Gravesite and Memorial and The King Shaka Cultural Heritage Tourism Trail, in honour of the heritage that King Shaka left behind - also known as the “Gateway to the Zulu Kingdom” of KwaZulu-Natal. Chief Albert Luthuli was the first African to win the Nobel Peace Prize (1961). His grave, located in KwaDukuza, has been restored and the church in which Chief Albert Luthuli’s body laid in state has been renovated.

UKHAHLAMBA
DRAKENSBERG
The awe inspiring Drakensberg Mountains, named ‘uKhahlamba’ by the Zulu people, is an area of sheer natural beauty with a wealth of biological diversity. This 243 000 hectare mountainous region, known as the uKhahlamba-Drakensberg Park, well deserves its international status as a World Heritage Site. It entices visitors with massive cliffs towering over riverine bush, lush evergreen forests, cascading waterfalls and mountain streams, as well as hiking paths that invite exploration.
For more info check out the website www.drakensberg.kzn.org.za On 30 November 2000, the uKhahlamba Drakensberg Park was added to the World Heritage Site list, and is described by UNESCO as having “exceptional natural beauty in its soaring basaltic buttresses, incisive dramatic cutbacks, and golden sandstone ramparts...” The Park is an important haven for many threatened and endemic species, and for its wealth of rock paintings made by the San people over a period of 4000 years.
Did you know? The Eland (Taurotragus oryx) is the largest of the African antelope standing nearly two metres at the shoulder. It is difficult to predict where you will find this antelope due to its nomadic lifestyle. Listen out for the tell-tale loud clicking sound its knees make when it walks or trots.
When Europeans first encountered this rock art in southern Africa some 350 years ago, they considered the drawings primitive and crude, just “Bushman paintings,” twodimensional accounts of hunting and fighting and daily life. Today, however, we know that for the San, rock paintings weren’t just representations of life, they were a record of the past. Subjects of the Bushman and San paintings range from animals (mainly eland) and humans, to ox-wagons and mounted men with rifles. The paintings also held enormous religious significance. When shamans painted an eland, they didn’t just pay respect to a sacred animal they also harnessed its essence. These ‘trance buck’
are often depicted with blood coming from their noses, as the shamans did in their trances, the line between animal and human becoming blurred. KwaZulu-Natal’s new Kamberg Rock Art Centre helps visitors understand and interpret the more than 40 000 San images to be found in the uKhlahlamba Drakensberg Park. The centre is situated in the Kamberg Nature Reserve, near to the Game Pass Shelter and offers visitors information about the world of the San, as well as the opportunity to walk to Game Pass Shelter to view outstanding examples of their art in the company of a trained community guide. This trail is a world-class experience in Khoisan rock art and living Zulu and San culture, set within the scenic beauty of the Kamberg Nature Reserve section of the uKhahlamba Drakensberg Park.

WHAT, WHERE & WHEN
SOUTH COAST
Sub-tropical forests, blue lagoons, golden beaches, rocky coves, the warm Indian Ocean and sunny weather – this is what makes the South Coast such a popular holiday destination. The beaches offer something for everyone, golden sands, tidal pools and beaches for swimming, sunbathing, surfing and fishing. Other outdoor pursuits range from golf to mountain biking, to hiking to diving, whale watching and zip lining – this is one destination where visitors are spoilt for choice.
For more info check out the website www.tourismsouthcoast.co.za The South Coast is host to many cultural landmarks and well known historical myths, which add another dimension to regular towns and landmarks. The Sezela River is said to be named after a giant crocodile, known as Sezela, which for many years had been terrorising the local Malangeni tribe and was killed at the Sezela River mouth in 1828 on Shaka’s orders. Shaka’s Bush, in an area of the Marburg Common (Port Shepstone), marks where, in 1828, Shaka stayed with Henry Francis Fynn during his great raid on the Mpondo tribe.
Did you know?
The Port Shepstone Lighthouse, located on the southern shore of the large Umzimkulu River, was manufactured in England and shipped to South Africa in the 1890s to act as a signal station for the old Port Shepstone harbour. It is a national monument. 40 | www - WHAT, WHERE & WHEN Aug-Sept 2015
Fifty kilometres south of Durban lies Umkomaas, on the banks of the Mkomazi River. The Zulu name is Umkomazi, which was given by King Shaka himself in 1928. During a hunting sojourn, he saw a number of cow whales and calves basking in the shallows a short distance out to sea from the river mouth. The name Umkomazi, literally translated means ‘The watering place of the whales’. Now days Umkomaas is better known as the gateway to the Aliwal Shoal, which is situated 5 kilometres offshore. In 1849, a 3-mast vessel called the ‘Aliwal’ almost
collided with the shoal, giving the shoal its now famous name. The Aliwal Shoal is a popular dive site with depths varying from 6 to 27 metres and an abundance of soft corals, sponges, and hiding places, which have combined to attract over 1 200 species of fish, as well as turtles, rays, sharks and whales. The Aliwal Shoal is also the final resting-place of two unfortunate ships, which were once ripped apart by the upper reaches of the reef. The Produce (1974), once a 2000 ton bulk carrier, lies on the sandy bottom at 30 meters and its rusted framework has formed an established reef, home to many species of fish, including 20 tame Brindle Bass. The Nebo, which sank on its maiden voyage in 1884, lies at 25 meters.

ELEPHANT COAST
The Elephant Coast is surely one of South Africa’s most beautiful and unspoilt areas. Explore the dense evergreen forests of towering fig trees, marvel at the lush ferns and wild orchids, the wild date and lala palms dotting the landscape and the swamp forests with tangled masses of greenery. Hike up mountainous sand dunes, through thick coastal forest, onto pristine beaches and down to the warm Indian Ocean. Few areas in Africa have the incredible diversity found in this narrow strip of land, approximately 200 kilometers long and just 70 kilometers wide, and home to an incredible 21 different ecosystems.
For more info check out the website www.elephantcoast.kzn.org.za

Lake Jozini, situated within the Pongola Game Reserve and at the foot of the Lebombo Mountain range, is the only place in South Africa where tiger fishing is readily available. The lake is also home to Gustaf, the ‘big daddy’ resident crocodile – be sure to look out for him basking in the sun on the water’s edge.
With this variety in habitats, it is little wonder that this region offers some of South Africa’s finest game viewing and bird watching. The uMkhuze section of the iSimangaliso Wetland Park (declared South Africa’s first World Heritage Site in 1999), boasts more than 420 recorded bird species and is renowned for its game-viewing hides, pans and the guided ‘fig forest walk’. The Hluhluwe iMfolozi Park, credited with saving the once endangered white rhino, is also home to many species of antelope as well as large populations of elephant, buffalo and giraffe, and predators such as the lion, cheetah and the elusive leopard. The eastern shores region of the iSimangaliso Wetland Park is home to a huge diversity of fauna and flora as a result of its different ecosystems – ranging from coral reefs and sandy beaches to subtropical dune forests, savannas and wetlands. The variety of animals found in the Park includes elephants, black and white rhino and buffalo, as well as large numbers of Nile crocodiles and hippo. Whales, dolphins and marine turtles, leatherback and loggerhead, as well
as the occasional whale shark are found in the ocean. The underwater reefs are home to a variety of brightly coloured fish and a spectacular coral diversity. The north western region has a number of historically significant Zulu burial and battle sites, craft markets and natural havens just waiting to be explored. The indigenous Zulu and Tonga communities living in the Elephant Coast provide a unique opportunity for interaction and an authentic cultural encounter. These experiences provide visitors with a valuable understanding of the socio- economic realities, challenges and current traditional practices. Share in, and experience, the local traditions and customs of communities driven to preserve their culture with passion and pride.

ZULULAND
The Zululand region lies north of the Thukela River and extends to the subtropical northern parts of KwaZulu-Natal. It is an area of breathtaking hills and valleys dotted with traditional tribal villages and quaint towns - a place where you can unexpectedly be invited to share a meal or drink. Once the prized hunting grounds of Zulu kings, Zululand offers a wealth of cultural activities and experiences as well as game-viewing, hiking and nature trails and the warm Indian Ocean, whose mangrove swamps and life-giving lagoons give way to rolling green hills and indigenous forests.

Mtunzini, meaning ‘Place in the Shade’, is home to a grove of Raphia Palms (Raphia australis), declared a natural monument, and arguably the best place to spot the rare Palmnut Vulture which nests close to the top of the palm whose fruits form an essential part of their diet.
A celebrated event in the Zulu calendar is the Zulu King’s Reed Dance, the uMkhosi woMhlanga, a traditional ceremony of maidens held annually in September. Maidens from all over the province and from as far afield as the Kingdom of Swaziland flock to the eNyokeni Royal Palace to participate in the traditional dance of the maidens. The girls converge in groups from the Zululand regions to the King’s Palace the day before the ceremony. The main attraction of the ceremony is the presentation of reeds to the King. Each maiden is to carry a reed from the river and present it to the King in a spectacular procession at the Palace. Zululand offers opportunities for an authentic insight into the contemporary cultural lifestyle of the average rural Zulu person, to experience village life as happens – a vibrant living culture.
Age and focuses on the fascinating crosscultural influences of the past 200 years. The Vukani Zulu Cultural Museum houses some of the best Zulu arts and crafts work collected over the years, with several of the artists receiving international recognition for their work. The Vukani Association was formed more than 30 years ago in an attempt to revive the then-dying art of basketry. Also in Eshowe is the Dlinza Forest, visited by birdwatchers from all over the world hoping to catch a glimpse of one of the many bird species to be found there. The 125-metre Dlinza Forest Aerial Boardwalk, at an elevation of 10 metres, allows visitors to walk right under the canopy of Dlinza’s indigenous scarp forest and culminates in a 20-metre observation tower with a breathtaking view.
For a glimpse into the history of the region, pop into the Fort Nongqavi Museum in Eshowe, the oldest town of European settlement in Zululand. The museum depicts the history of Zululand from the early Iron www - WHAT, WHERE & WHEN June-July 2015 | 45
