The Festive Season is finally here and we are excited to welcome the thousands of holidaymakers heading towards to KwaZulu-Natal for their well-deserved summer holiday with their friends and family. The larger garden rooms have new fabrics, drapery and floors and are spacious enough for families. • The Protea Hotel by Marriott Durban uMhlanga has added a new 15- storey tower which includes the creation of a new reception area, lobby, restaurant, lounge, a bar and an additional 130 new rooms. Durban Art Gallery Durban Art Gallery boasts a wide selection of South African contemporary art. With over a century of history, this gallery is also home to over 3,500 artworks, including British, French and Dutch paintings. The gallery hosts a variety of activities including lectures, classes, films and roaming art exhibitions. There’s a full entertainment dance card on offer this season. Durban’s Playhouse Company is staging Rodgers and Hammerstein’s classic musical, The Sound of Music, through December. Directed by Ralph Lawson, this features Craig Urbani as the widowed Captain von Trap and Lynelle Kenned as Maria Rainer who becomes governess to his seven children. Arline Jaftha is the Mother Abbess, and the cast profiles several Durban actors including Liesl Coppin, Frank Graham, Adam Doré, and Shelley McLean – along with a fine line-up of fresh new talent set to play the Von Trapp children. The production is accompanied by the KZN Philharmonic Orchestra, conducted by Lykele Temmingh. Other shows at the Playhouse this season include: Duma Ndlovu’s prison drama, The Game, playing in The Loft from 15 to 24 December, starring Sindi Dlathu; Dawn King; Nqobile Ndlovu; Nomasonto Dlamini; Sheila Khumalo; Buhle Samuels; Lungile Mkhize; and Vuyiseka Cawe; and the uproarious comedy, Glued, starring Krijay Govender, Leeanda Reddy and Kaseran Pillay, which plays in the Drama Theatre on 22 and 23 December. Darren King and Graeme Wicks provide masses of humour as Nurse Nora Knickersnagger and Hucleby Hopscotch the court jester, and Bryan Hiles reaches new levels of charming silliness as the cowardly knight, Sir Ninnyliver. The magical forces of good and evil are splendidly represented by the effervescent Belinda Henwood as Celestina Sparkle, and Katy Moore as the deliciously evil Maleficent. The Fresha Theatre Festival, an exciting new arts venture, is a planned for Durban’s beachfront from Friday 20 - Sunday 22 January 2017. The festival offers free street theatre along the North Beach promenade, allowing Durbanites access to quality, innovative 15-minute theatre productions in the open air each afternoon. In addition to this, an evening programme will showcase excellent examples of one and two-hander theatre productions in sundowner performances presented in a Bedouin tent on the Bay of Plenty lawns. In addition, the festival will host a screen acting workshop and have a strong social media component, encouraging Instagram, Facebook and Twitter users to engage with the festival, and will host a ”twitter play” competition. Selected sites for performance include the Bay of Plenty lawns (North Beach) and surrounding areas. Confirmed acts include the provocative street comedian Gerard O from the Netherlands, deaf mime artist Sibo Masondo, street architect Doung Anwar Jahangeer, freestyle footballers, and the award-winning duo of TQ Zindo and Mpilo Nzimande with Andrew Buckland’s “Feedback”. 18 Dec will see hundreds of runners and walkers participating in the December UMHLANGA TOURISM TRAIL RUN AND WALK in conjunction with Riverside Trails. Three routes will challenge runners of varying fitness, with the longest tackling single tracks, hills and rivers over a distance of 18km or the shorter 12 km, then for the less experienced gentler 5km distance inviting novices and the younger folk to get out and be active.Prizes are up for grabs. When Europeans arrived at the Port of Natal in 1825, the Valley of 1000 Hills was a remote and isolated area teeming with game. WS Field was one of the first Europeans to settle in 1851, and leopards were said to occasionally spend the night on the veranda of the Field homestead in what is now Kloof. Within a few years a wagon route opened up between Durban and the interior, close to what is now the Old Main Road. The establishment of the railway line linking the goldfields with the port rapidly followed the discovery of gold in the Transvaal in the 1880s, and the rail and road traffic through the 1000 Hills increased.

The splendour of summer is no better illustrated than by the beauty of the KZN Midlands basking in typical year-end holiday weather. Arguably the most diverse of regions in KZN, the Midlands is renowned for its rolling hills, forests and of course, the foothills of the Drakensberg Mountain range. Adding a touch of gentility is the capital city of the province, Pietermaritzburg, that boasts some outstanding examples of Victorian architecture, dressed in their characteristic salmon-coloured brick facades.

In Pietermaritzburg, the quaint Farmersâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; Market, in the grounds of the Botanical Gardens, is staged every Saturday morning, while further afield, the Karkloof Farmersâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; Market is a draw-card for visitors far afield as Umhlanga and Scottburgh, also on Saturday mornings. Other markets include the more parochial Dargle Country Market on the first Sunday of the month at the Lions River Polo Club, while the Rosetta Country Market and the Gowrie Village Market, in Nottingham Road, are both staged every second and last Saturday of the month.

Competitive paddlers from across the country descend on the Midlands and Pietermaritzburg in December and January to take advantage of the weather and water levels in rivers to train and acclimatise themselves ahead of the annual Dusi Canoe Marathon in February.

It is one of only 49 Marine World Heritage Sites globally. It incorporates Lake St Lucia, the St Lucia and Maputaland Marine Reserves, the Coastal Forest Reserve, Kosi Bay Nature Reserve and inland include the Mkuze Game Reserve. Several thousand head of game that historically occurred in the region, including oribi, tsessebe, black and white rhino, elephant, wild dog, cheetah, buffalo, waterbuck and blue wildebeest have been translocated into the Park since 2000. Fauna in the marine reserve includes protected whale and shark populations, coelacanths, turtles, and a myriad of species on its coral reefs. Shaka was born as the result of a chance meeting between the youthful King of the Zulu clan, King Senzangakhona, and a pretty young girl called Nandi, from the neighbouring Langeni clan. Three months after their alliance, word reached King Senzangakhona that the girl was pregnant. The young chief tried to talk himself out of the situation, ‘perhaps she is simply harbouring iShaka’ (an intestinal beetle) but six months later the ‘beetle’ arrived in the shape of a lusty son, who was promptly named Shaka.

Find yourself a local birding guide and head into one of these beautiful forests - this time of year is great for birding and the region offers birders the opportunity of some very special birding ‘ticks’. The Dlinza Forest is probably the most accessible and is visited by birdwatchers from all over the world hoping to catch a glimpse of rare bird species such as the Spotted Ground Thrush and Eastern Bronzenaped Pigeon. The Ongoye Forest is home to the endemic Ongoye Red Squirrel, numerous special plants and invertebrates as well as being the only place in Southern Africa to see Woodward’s (Green) Barbet. For an authentic taste of the real Zulu culture, visit the KwaBulawayo Heritage and Cultural Site. This is where King Shaka established his military headquarters and is also where the legendary Mzilikazi betrayed him. Legend has it that, during its heyday, KwaBulawayo boasted 30 000 bee-hive huts, making it the biggest city in Africa at the time. It was here that young men were vigorously trained into strong warriors, setting the foundation for

the rich and profound history of the mighty Zulu nation. In 1823 Shaka was triumphant, with his army conquering the neighbouring clans to create one mighty nation that was supreme and his followers delirious with success. With adequate sustenance in the form of cattle, milk and loot seized during their conquests, their settlement become too small to accommodate the fast growing nation. So during the winter of 1823 King Shaka began to build a new capital on the site overlooking the valley of the Mhlathuze River and named it KwaBulawayo, meaning ‘the place of the persecuted’. The raids that King Shaka was so well known for were suspended during the hot summer as his people tilled the fields and made spears and shields. Winter was the time for war and raids were launched wherever a tribe could be found still in the possession of cattle or other forms of wealth.

With its picturesque landscapes of rolling plains, rocky hills and undulating valleys it’s hard to imagine the battles that were fought and the hardships endured. This region, with more recorded battlefields than anywhere else in Africa, is the place to discover another facet of the battles fought between Zulu, Brit and Boer. This is where Shaka, Winston Churchill, Mahatma Gandhi and General Louis Botha once walked, and where the death of the Prince Imperial of France saw the end of the last Napoleon.

The Battle of Blood River that culminated on the 16th of December 1838 was a battle between the Zulus and the Boers, so named because the waters of the Ncome River flowed red with the blood of slain Zulus. The Battle of Isandlwana, the first major encounter in the Anglo-Zulu War between the British Empire and the Zulu Kingdom, which took place on the 22nd of January 1879 (this is being commemorated with a re-enactment at the battle site), and the Battle of Rorke’s Drift, which took place later that same day and into the evening. The world-famous 118-day Siege of Ladysmith by Boer forces (2 November 1899 to 28 February 1900), the Battle of Colenso which took place on the 15th of December 1899, the Battle of Spioenkop on the 24th of January 1900, as well as the Battle of the Thukela Heights (12 to 28 February 1900), which was, until WW2, the biggest battle fought by the British in Africa.

THE DISTRICT IS SITUATED IN NORTHWEST KWAZULU-NATAL, BORDERED BY THE MIDLANDS IN THE WEST, THE DRAKENSBERG IN THE NORTH, AND ZULULAND TO THE EAST. The Umzinyathi region bears memories of the wars that swept across South Africa between 1879 and 1902, but its history starts long before this. The legendary King Shaka and the Zulu nation created upheaval among local tribes, the Voortrekkers crossed the mountains to settle on the land, while the British colonists had settled at what was known as ‘Port Natal’, now Durban. What followed was an era of war, as the Zulus, Voortrekkers and British clashed in some of the bloodiest battles in the history of South Africa, shaping the towns and villages of this region. The wars were fought over land and sovereignty, and played out over almost 100 years. Battle of Blood River/Ncome: 16 December 1838 The most significant battle of the Voortrekker-Zulu conflict took place 48 kms east of Dundee at what became known as

‘Blood River/Ncome’. After Voortrekker leader Piet Retief and his party were killed at King Dingane’s capital of Mgungundlovu, Andries Pretorius led a commando consisting of 464 men to a strategic site on the banks of the Ncome (‘Praiseworthy’) River. The Voortrekkers established a defensive position with their 64 wagons (known as a laager) and awaited the Zulu attack, which took place on Sunday, 16 December 1838. Between 12 000 and 15 000 warriors attacked, and in the ensuing battle approximately 3 000 are estimated to have been killed. So many died in the river that it ran red with blood. The Voortrekkers were convinced that their victory was as a result of Divine intervention, leading to the anniversary of the Battle being commemorated in later years as a public holiday. It is now remembered as the Day of Reconciliation.

Not only can you enjoy fabulous walks and great views, but the more energetic can hike all the way to Salt Rock for even more spectacular views. This hike takes you through a tunnel which is best attempted at low tide. Popular swimming beaches are Willard Beach and Clarke Bay. Salmon Bay is popular with the surfing crowd whilst the Ballito Tidal Pool remains a firm favourite for families with kids. Shaka’s Rock, named after a rocky outcrop believed to have been used by Shaka, the great Zulu chief, as a lookout, is a small residential village with a wonderful stretch of sandy beach and an inviting tidal pool bordered by rocky cliffs. Salt Rock is popular for its main swimming beach and tidal pool. Enjoy one of the many hiking routes on both lower and upper slopes - there are a large number of marked trails, from short ambles through indigenous fern forests to more strenuous full day hikes traversing rivers and hillsides to full-on adventuring. Be aware that thunderstorms are common during the summer months, and although accidents are rare, be sure to complete the Mountain Rescue Register before you set off, even if it is for a day walk or just a few hours.

The Himeville Museum was built in 1900 as the last of Natal’s loop-holed forts before housing prisoners until 1972. Part of each entry fee goes towards the invaluable emergency search and rescue service provided by volunteers of the Mountain Club of South Africa. For flower lovers, the Sani Pass Wild Flower Walk is a must, but be sure to have your passport handy for entrance into Lesotho when you head up to the highest pub in Africa for that cold beer. There are a number of permanent, mapped trails for mountain biking enthusiasts to enjoy, and paddlers will appreciate the recent rains and the faster flowing rivers – the Drak Challenge 2017 in Underberg (in January) is a popular event. Other active options are

white water rafting, horse riding, and golf, but if you’re less inclined to physical activity, just relax, breathe in the fresh mountain air, dabble your toes in an icy stream, and enjoy the splendour of the Drakensberg Mountains. Music lovers will enjoy ‘Christmas in the Berg’ which takes place annually on the campus of the Drakensberg Boys Choir School in the Champagne Castle area over a weekend in December. There is also a wonderful Christmas market with plenty local crafts and goodies for sale. The three-day Smoking Dragon’s New Year Festival, with its 40 acts over different stages, is sure to be a hit. And while you’re in the northern Drakensberg, try fit in a hike up to the source of the uThukela River, and watch as it plunges some 950 metres over the edge of the plateau in spectacular fashion. This, the Sentinel Trail, is a tough hike and a more manageable option would be to hike along the uThukela River to the base of the Falls.

The weekend will end on a high note with the traditional Shelly Centre Mass Parade which gives all bikers one last opportunity to hit the road together before heading home. The 34km mass parade will take place on Sunday, 30 April with the route taking bikers from Shelly Beach Centre along Marine Drive towards Port Shepstone CBD before heading back towards Margate and finishing at the Fishing Pier.
