SANIBONANI and Welcome to the Exceptional Zulu Kingdom
Let me first convey my warm greetings to all our wonderful readers and in the customary way of our province’s most spoken language, IsiZulu, I wish to say “Sanibonani Onyakeni Omusha”, which means “Welcome to the New Year”. It’s a brand new year and we’re already in February the second month of 2016. I hope we all feel rejuvenated as we set actions for new plans and also because it’s February the month of “Love and Romance “. February has become synonymous with love and romance, so there is no better place to spend your Valentine’s Day with your loved one, than a romantic weekend getaway for two in one of our magnificent romantic spots in KZN. Whatever your heart desires, the Zulu Kingdom has a variety of options suitable for you. This month’s festivities come hot on the heels of a successful festive season in the past year. I am thrilled to share that KwaZuluNatal recorded yet another successful Festive Season period with a R3 Billion cash injection into the local economy. Thank you to all our visitors who chose the Zulu Kingdom as their holiday destination. Our visitor from Reunion Islands Frederie Dufour wrote on our Facebook page and said “1st time in South Africa and I love it, 1st time in KwaZulu-Natal and I love it too. Sure next year, I’m back!” We are definitely looking forward to welcome Frederie back and all of our holidaymakers once again in the New Year. I would also like to extend my appreciation to the tourism trade that continues to ensure that visitors get excellent service. A big thank you goes to the people of KZN for being exceptional hosts.
2016 will be an action packed year with exciting events all year round. Major events will continue to be a key contributor to the economy of the province and again this year, we will have a full calendar of exciting events ranging from sports to music awards and many more. Just this month, we are getting ready to welcome thousands of sporting enthusiasts from all over the country for the Aquelle Midmar Mile happening from 13-14 February and the FNB Dusi Canoe Marathon from 18-20 February 2016. We encourage families, friends and supporters to also take some time and explore the many tourism attractions in the surrounding areas. The music fraternity will descend to KwaZulu-Natal for the biggest awards show in the country, the 15th Metro FM Music Awards which will be held at the Durban ICC on 27 February 2016. As Tourism KZN, we plan to take full advantage of our partnership with Metro FM which is one of the biggest radio stations in the country boasting over 6 million listeners countrywide. We will be rolling out a series of activations where we will be showcasing our tourism offerings, through a series of live broadcasts leading to the awards ceremony. Metro FM radio personalities will get a first-hand experience of our destination giving their listeners a front row seat to our exceptional destination. The Human Rights holiday on 21 March 2016 will also give you another chance to take a sho’t left to the Zulu Kingdom. This will be followed closely by the Easter Season, an ideal time to reconnect with your family by taking a holiday in KwaZulu-Natal as we pride ourselves in having a plethora of family-orientated experiences. It’s also a great opportunity to have an extended stay
in KZN. We therefore urge you to plan ahead and book flights and accommodation early to avoid disappointments. Our holidaymakers also have the option to visit the Drakensberg and enjoy South Africa’s longest running music festival, Splashy Fen from 24 – 27 March 2016. The arrival of three major international airlines (Turkish Airlines, Ethiopian Airlines and Qatar Airways) now landing directly at King Shaka International Airport as well as the already established daily Emirates flights, we anticipate increased numbers of international tourists into the province all year round. We extremely excited for the opportunity to position KwaZulu-Natal as must visit destination to all these markets. Don’t forget to follow us on all our social networks, Facebook (KZNTourism), Instagram (@tourismkzn_official), Twitter (@Tourism KZN), YouTube (KwaZulu-Natal Tourism Authority) and Pintrest (KZN Tourism), to be updated on all our upcoming events and to drop us a line and tell us about your exceptional holiday in the Zulu Kingdom and remember to #GottaLuvKZN. MIDMAR MILE 13-15 FEBRUARY 2016 South Africa’s Midmar Mile – the world’s largest open water swim – was swum for the first time in 1974 when three friends, Mike Arbuthnot, Dick Park and Brian Glover, unable to compete in the Buffalo Mile in East London because of petrol restrictions, decided to stage a race in KwaZulu-Natal. One hundred and fifty-three competitors entered the first event, with the youngest swimmer being 10 years old. Victory went to Trevor Strydom, with Owen Ryan and Martin Godfrey finishing second and third. Since that time Godfrey has competed in all but one event, with Mike Arbuthnot and Mike Pengelly holding the distinction of having taken part in every single one, although one of Pengelly’s swims was unofficial because he was taking part in the World Masters Lifesaving Championships in New Zealand. Like Godfrey, Gail Bristow has missed only one Midmar Mile and she holds the women’s record. THE DUSI CANOE MARATHON 18-20 February 2016 The Dusi Canoe Marathon was founded in 1951, and covers roughly 120km between the cities of Pietermaritzburg and Durban in KwaZulu-Natal, on the East Coast of South Africa. It is the biggest canoeing event on the African continent, and one of the world’s most popular river marathons, attracting between 1600 and 2000 paddlers each year. Paddlers can choose between normal marathon K1s, K2s or even K3s. These boats need to be of robust construction to be able to take the knocks dished out by the rocky river, and must have an overstern rudder. Paddlers must wear splashcover (spraydescks) and lifejackets (PFDs) and, if very full river conditions occur, will be required to wear helmets. Paddlers must make provision for their own hydration, and carry enough fluids for each stage of the race. The race starts on the uMsindusi River that runs through Pietermaritzburg and includes a number of weirs and Grade 1 to Grade 2+ rapids using water released from Henley Dam. At roughly the halfway point of the race the uMsindusi River meets the far larger uMngeni River and the river becomes more challenging, with some rapids rated Grade 3+, and some of the trickier rapids like Island 2 is portaged by most of the field. Most of the large rapids can be portaged if desired.

It should be noted that there is a fair amount of travelling on gravel roads, but those to all the major sites are generally passable for your average car except at the height of the rainy season in January and February when you need to check the condition before hand. Today what appears to be little more than wind-swept plains littered with the remains of stone forts, graveyards and little else to indicate strife, bore witness to innumerable fierce battles. First between the Voortrekkers on their way to the hinterland in a bid to escape the British rule of the Cape Colony, and the fierce Zulu kings, who believed that this beautiful land that lay between the Drakensberg Mountains and the Indian Ocean was their own ‘heaven on earth’. This same area of land then witnessed further clashes between the British Empire, battling to gain control over land across the Tugela River, and the Zulu nation in the Anglo-Zulu War of 1879, encompassing the famous battles at Isandlawana and Rorkes
Drift. Just two years later, the British were at war again in South Africa in what became known as the First Anglo-Boer War, pitting the Boers and British against one another, with numerous battles ensuing across this same area of land. Isandlwana and Rorke’s Drift are two of the most famous battlefields in the country, and also perhaps in British history, perhaps because it was here that, in a furious twohour battle, Zulu forces armed primarily with traditional spears and shields thrashed the mighty British Colonial Empire forces, one of the few times they were ever routed by an indigenous army. Eleven Victoria Crosses were awarded to those who defended Rorke’s Drift. Today this beautiful and somewhat fragile region forms the heart of a Battlefields Route that one can do as part of a tour or as a self-drive experience - maps and brochures in tow to trace the battles that involved Mahatma Gandhi, Churchill, Shaka and General Louis Botha - all of whom played strategic roles in these intense clashes that have left the landscape imbued with the echoes of battle. (See Battlefields Map).
A SUMMARY OF THE BATTLES THAT TOOK PLACE IN MARCH 1879 137 years ago by Ken Gillings THE BATTLE OF ENTOMBE SPRUIT 12 March 1879
to proceed to Myer’s Drift in order to escort the wagons back to Fort Clery. When Moriarty arrived, he found two wagons on the south bank and the remaining 17 wagons on the north bank. The night of the 11th March was cold and misty and Mbilini personally reconnoitred the laager on the north bank. Before dawn on the 12th March 1879, he led about 800 of his followers from his base at Tafelkop and attacked the laager. Moriarty and his men were taken completely by surprise and were unable to form up.
After the battle of Isandlwana on the 22nd January 1879, Colonel Evelyn Wood VC had inherited Col Hugh Rowlands’ ‘5th Column’ at Fort Clery, Lüneburg. A force comprising 5 companies of the 80th Regiment (later the South Staffordshire Volunteers) was stationed there under the command of Brevet Major Charles Tucker. Tucker received his supplies from Rowlands’ old base at Derby in the former Eastern Transvaal and these supply columns passed within a short distance of the base of a Swazi renegade prince by the name of Mbilini kaMswati. During the first week of March 1879, one of these columns was en route from Derby to Fort Clery and when it reached Myer’s Drift on the eNtombe River, they found that it was flooded and impossible to cross. The military escort rode to Fort Clery and Tucker ordered Captain David Moriarty of the 80th Regiment
Moriarty was surrounded by groups of warriors but put up a terrific fight, shooting several of them with his revolver including three sons of Chief Manyanyoba kaMaqondo, a prominent inkosi from the area. He was struck by a spear and then shot in the chest. Mbilini’s men then went on the rampage inside the laager. The wagons were looted and the camp was destroyed.

THE BATTLE OF HLOBANE 28 March 1879
As a result of the setbacks suffered by the Central and Coastal Columns, Lord Chelmsford’s invasion of Zululand came to a halt, and it became necessary for him to redeploy his forces. The Flying Column, commanded by Col Evelyn Wood, was ordered to demonstrate in the areas of the headwaters of the White Mfolozi River, near present day Vryheid. One of the major obstacles to Wood’s operations was a major Zulu speaking community from the area, the abaQulusi. Approximately 1000 of them occupied a large, flat-topped mountain known as Hlobane, upon which the abaQuluzi grazed their cattle, and a lower plateau known as Tendeka. At 04H00 on the 28th March, a column commanded by Lt Col Redvers Buller set out from camp at Khambula, under appalling weather conditions. Their route took them up the eastern end of Hlobane, where they came under fire from some of the abaQuluzi. THE BATTLE OF KHAMBULA 29 MARCH 1879
The morning after the Battle of Hlobane, on the 29th March, the Zulu army under the command of Chief Mnyamana Buthelezi advanced on Colonel Evelyn Wood’s camp at Khambula, which was occupied by slightly fewer than 2700 men. Their morale was high after their success at Hlobane, and they therefore went into action somewhat overconfident. At 11h00, Wood observed the Zulus advancing but insisted that the men finished eating their lunch, and by 12h00, they were ready to meet the Zulu onslaught. His force was deployed in two defensive positions - a 20 www - WHAT, WHERE & WHEN Feb-March 2016
He was followed at noon by Lt Col John Russell and Col. Wood followed a short while later, riding along the base of Hlobane towards Ntshenteka nek, where he and his Staff came under heavy fire from the abaQuluzi who were concealed in the slopes of the mountain. Lt Llewellyn Lloyd (Wood’s interpreter) was killed, as was Capt Campbell during the follow-up operation. After a hastily read burial service, Wood decided to return to check on Russell’s progress. As Wood started to make his way along the south-eastern flank of Hlobane, he observed what appeared to be a large, shadowy black cloud snaking its way across the hills to the south-east. He discovered to his horror that it was the main Zulu army, totalling over 22000 warriors, advancing in the direction of his severely depleted camp at Khambula. The Zulus were commanded by Chief Mnyamana Buthelezi. Buller, by that stage at the top of the Devil’s Pass, sent Capt Barton back along the summit to order the rest of the troops to descend Hlobane via a re-entrant on the eastern slope, and to bury those who had been killed during the ascent.
heading straight into the attacking force. A fierce battle ensued, resulting in Barton’s force suffering heavy casualties. Meanwhile, Buller’s force commenced its hair-raising descent of the Devil’s Pass. Buller personally assisted many of his men in the descent, for which he was awarded the Victoria Cross. Petrus Lafras Uys, one of the Boers who participated in the operation, was killed at the foot of the Devil’s Pass when he turned back to assist one of his sons. British Imperial and Colonial casualties were 17 officers with 79 other ranks killed, and 1 officer and 7 other ranks wounded. Wood’s Irregulars suffered approximately 100 killed and an unknown number wounded. Zulu and abaQulusi casualties are unknown. The survivors of Hlobane eventually made their way back to Khambula and prepared to make a stand against the main Zulu force, which had encamped on the plain below Hlobane.
On observing the main Zulu army, he sent two troopers off to order Barton to descend Hlobane via “the right of the mountain” (ie, via the northern slope of Ntshenteka Nek). Buller had, however, been facing west when the order was written, and when Barton received it, he was facing east, unaware of the approach of the Zulus, who were approaching from that direction. Barton then descended Hlobane and swung south, redoubt and a laager - on the ridge overlooking the headwaters of the White Mfolozi River. The advance of the right horn of the Zulu army carried them in the direction of the British laager, which they attacked with vigour, but they were met with heavy rifle and artillery fire. When the attack faltered, Wood ordered firing to cease in order to preserve ammunition. At approximately 14h00, the left horn attacked, resulting in the right horn closing in as well. They fell upon a Company of the 13th Regiment in the cattle kraal, forcing them to withdraw to the redoubt on the summit of the hill. After some 3 hours of constant fighting, the Zulu attacks began to falter, and Wood ordered the Infantry to clear the Zulus from the ledge. Buller’s mounted men then rode out and pursued the retreating warriors
until dark, inflicting heavy casualties. Over 2000 Zulus perished and many more were wounded. The British lost 3 Officers and 26 Other Ranks killed, while 5 Officers and 49 Other Ranks were wounded. The Zulu army never really recovered from this battle, and when Chief Buthelezi reported back to King Cetshwayo, the realisation struck the king that he was in no position to resist the British advance on his principal ikhanda at Ondini. The scene was now set for the second invasion of Zululand by Lord Chelmsford...

When Europeans arrived at the Port of Natal in 1825, the Valley of 1000 Hills was a remote and isolated area teeming with game. WS Field was one of the first Europeans to settle in 1851, and leopards were said to occasionally spend the night on the veranda of the Field homestead in what is now Kloof. Within a few years a wagon route opened up between Durban and the interior, close to what is now the Old Main Road. The establishment of the railway line linking the goldfields with the port rapidly followed the discovery of gold in the Transvaal in the 1880s, and the rail and road traffic through the 1000 Hills increased. The Valley of 1000 Hills is named after the many hills and valleys which rise up from the banks of the Umgeni River as it flows from the distant Drakensberg mountains to the Indian Ocean. The valley has been home to the Zulu people for centuries, with many continuing to practice and live their unique traditional lifestyle. Their colourful ceremonies and expressive, artistic culture give this area its vibrant atmosphere and creative energy. Explore the roots of Zulu culture by taking an organised tour deep into tribal lands. Witness ancient Zulu ceremonies, as traditional diviners ‘throw the bones’ and communicate with their spiritual ancestors at PheZulu Safari Park. PheZulu also offers traditional Zulu dancing and cultural shows, as well as game drives, local curios, wonderful views across the valley and a crocodile and snake park. On the crest of the hills overlooking the valley are leafy suburbs and village centres, which have astonishing views and a year round holiday climate of warm summers and cool winters. These villages offer all the creature comforts one would expect including spas, B&Bs, fine dining, sophisticated shopping centres, outdoor adventure and local arts and crafts unique to the area.

Sapphire Coast The town of Amanzimtoti (meaning ‘sweet waters’ in Zulu) is said to have been named by the great Zulu King Shaka after tasting the fresh water that flows out of the hills at this scenic spot. It is situated on the coast a short drive south of Durban. This part of the coast is a popular destination for scuba divers who come to explore Aliwal Shoal, a fossilised sand dune that lies 5km off the Umkomaas river mouth. A myriad of warm water reef fish and cold water fish converge on Aliwal Shoal to create a kaleidoscope of colour. For those who prefer to remain on terra firma, the beaches of the
Sapphire Coast provide plenty of opportunities to enjoy swimming, surfing or fishing. Nature lovers can explore the Amanzimoti Bird Sanctuary or stroll in one of the nature reserves. MARIANNHILL MONASTERY 1 Abbot Francis Road, Mariannhill Monastery. Tel : (+27) 031 700 4288 Less than a kilometre away from the industrial area of Westmead, the Monastery is at the same time centuries away. The fast-paced, high-tech, cost cutting processes that define industrial work are part of a very different world from the one that the monastery inhabits, and it’s strange to think that these worlds exist side-by-side. The Monastery was founded in 1882 by Prior Franz Pfanner (who became Abbot three years later) after a failed mission in the Eastern Cape. Pfanner was, by all accounts, a powerful and charismatic figure, whose
submission to the strict Trappist order of silence and fasting was absolute. But everybody in the order didn’t appreciate his strict approach, particularly those monks who wanted to evangelise the local community, something that is particularly difficult when one has taken a vow of silence. Eventually, in 1892, an uprising of sorts took place, and the Catholic Church, which decided subsequently that the Monastery would no longer be Trappist, suspended Brother Francis from his position as Abbot. Instead, a new order was begun, the Order of Mariannhill, which placed more importance on evangelical work than on obligations to the canonical, contemplative life. Over the next century, the Order of Mariannhill established mission stations around the country and around the world.

PIETERMARITZBURG MIDLANDS Participants in the annual Duzi Canoe Marathon are in the same boat as farmers throughout KwaZulu-Natal, hoping for late summer rains. As things stand now, paddlers in the 2016 edition of the iconic canoe race will battle low water levels when they set off on February 18 from Camps Drift in Pietermaritzburg and head downstream to reach the Blue Lagoon in Durban three days later.
For more info check out the website www.midlands.kzn.org.za Still on the water theme, thousands of swimmers will come under starter’s order on 13 and 14 February for the Midmar Mile, one of the world’s largest open-water events. As it so happens, February and March are dotted with other sporting events in the Midlands and the provincial capital city of Pietermaritzburg. Key among those are The Witness Maritzburg City Marathon, on the last Sunday in February, and the Umgeni Marathon on 13 March, both enormously popular quallifiers for another iconic event later in the year, the Comrades Marathon.
Did you know?
To commemorate the 170th anniversary of The Witness, the sponsors of the The Witness Maritzburg City Marathon, the 2016 event will see the launch of a wheel chair and hand cycle races.
Apart from the plethora of sporting events, the region has plenty to offer visitors who prefer a less arduous outing. To this end, a vibrant market culture certainly appeals with the weekly Karkloof, Howick events highly popular. So too is the Farmer’s Market every Saturday morning in the picturesque surrounds of the landmark Botanical Gardens in Pietermaritzburg where arguably the most
affordable breakfast in the Midklands is served. For something very different, the Msunduzi Hospice fair on 5 March promises something for everybody. Aimed at raising funds for its critical work among people with lifethreatening conditions, the festivities include activities to entertain the young ones, plenty of sustenance on sale and the opportunity to pick up bargains. For those who are given to spur-of-themoment indulgence, the Midlands Meander offers an unparalleled visitor experience in arguably the country’s most spectacular area, from Bulwer to Greytown, from Hilton to Mooi River, and anywhere in between.

ELEPHANT COAST
The Elephant Coast must be one of South Africa’s most beautiful and unspoilt areas - dense evergreen forests of towering fig trees; lush ferns and wild orchids; wild date and iLala palms dotting the landscape; swamp forests with tangled masses of greenery; mountainous sand dunes, thick coastal forest, pristine beaches as well as lakes and ocean.

The leaves of the iLala Palm are woven to create the traditional beer baskets used to store the home brew beer made by the Zulus. The leaves are woven in such a way that when the weave gets wet it expands and becomes watertight. These decorative beer baskets were made for special events and purposes e.g. marriage, harvest, fertility and birth celebrations and as gifts for family or special friends. 36 www - WHAT, WHERE & WHEN Feb-March 2016
This area was named the Elephant Coast after a large herd of African elephant that lived in the region for centuries – they were once hunted out, but have been reintroduced in recent years and are now readily seen in many of the reserves in the region. These include the Hluhluwe-Imfolosi Game Reserve, which is the oldest game reserve in Africa, Mkuze Game Reserve, some private game reserves as well as the iSimangaliso Wetland Park which was South Africa’s first proclaimed World Heritage Site and stretches from Kosi Bay to about 20km south of Maphelane. Within these protected areas lies one of the world’s most important reserves of marine life. The sea and pristine beaches provide the ideal location for a variety of adventures, offering scuba diving, snorkelling and angling and the possibility of seeing Loggerhead and Leatherback turtles coming ashore to lay their eggs during the summer months. The spectacular Kosi Bay is a complex system of six large lakes, two smaller lakes and one of the best preserved
estuaries on the Indian Ocean coastline. It is popular spot for snorkelling, especially as the estuarine ‘reef’ is a short stroll through a warm channel and across a sand bank, and is home to a wide variety of tropical fish including moray eel and devil fire fish – it’s not called ‘the aquarium’ for nothing!. Fishing is popular amongst visitors, but is only allowed with a permit – fly fishing also continues to grow in popularity, although the presence of hippos and crocodiles does tend to add an element of danger to the sport. This region also offers some of South Africa’s finest birding, with over 25 different birding spots and more than 500 species recorded. The uMkhuze section of the iSimangaliso Wetland Park, also boasts more than 420 species recorded, and is renowned for its game-viewing hides.

The warm Indian Ocean, mangrove swamps and life-giving lagoons give way to rolling green hills and indigenous forests. Further inland you will find tea plantations, cattle ranches and pretty, historical towns such as Vryheid, with its many examples of Tudor and Edwardian architecture, and Paulpietersburg where you can relax in the therapeutic sulphur springs. But a visit to Zululand calls for an authentic ‘Zulu experience’ the memory of which will linger in your mind long after you have left. Take an ox wagon to Zulu villages of bee-hive huts and experience traditional Zulu hospitality, or a rural wedding ceremony, and if you wish, visit a traditional healer. In total contrast, take a township tour showcasing modern Zulu life including taverns, shebeens and traditional medicine shops. This time of year is great for birding and the regions many beautiful forests are home to some very special birding ‘ticks’. The Dlinza Forest, in Eshowe, is probably the most accessible and is visited by birdwatchers from all over the world hoping to catch a glimpse of
rare bird species such as the Spotted Ground Thrush and Eastern Bronze-naped Pigeon. Early morning is the best time to visit when the forest echoes with the calls of Trumpeter Hornbills, Purple-crested Turacos and Narina Trogons, just a few of the 65 forest bird species in Dlinza. The Ongoye Forest, situated inland from Mtunzini, is home to the endemic Ongoye Red Squirrel, numerous special plants and invertebrates as well as being the only place in Southern Africa to see Woodwards’ (Green) Barbet. Other ‘green’ specials include Green Twinspot, Green Malkoha, Olive Woodpecker, Olive Bush-Shrike and Emerald Cuckoo.

WHAT, WHERE & WHEN
BATTLEFIELDS
The KwaZulu-Natal Battlefields Route boasts the largest concentration of significant battles and war related sites in South Africa – with 82 battlefields, museums, old fortifications and places of remembrance. But if it’s more than history you’re looking for, the Battlefields region does not disappoint – there are a number of activities to keep the adventure junkie happy, from white-water rafting down the mighty Thukela, to some serious mountain biking and 4x4 trails.
For more info check out the website www.battlefields.kzn.org.za During February and March a number of lesser know battles that were fought in the region are commemorated. With no on site information at some of these memorials, the use of a guide will enhance the experience. On the 8 February 1881 during the First Boer War, the Battle of Schuinshoogte, also known as the Battle of Ingogo, was fought north of Newcastle.
Did you know?
The Battle of the Thukela Heights (12th to 28th February 1900) was, until the Second World War, the biggest battle fought by the British in Africa. And until the Falklands War on 1982, the biggest battle fought by the British in the Southern Hemisphere. A number of graves and memorials bear testimony to these battles. 40 www - WHAT, WHERE & WHEN Feb-March 2016
After many hours of close range engagements heavy rain began to fall and the battle came to an abrupt end, and despite the flooding Ingogo river the British managed to flee during nightfall – considered a major error on the part of the Boers. During the Anglo-Zulu War, on the 29 March 1879, over 22,000 Zulu warriors attacked a fortified British camp. A four hour battle ensued resulting in the warriors being driven off in defeat, considered by to be the turning point of the Anglo-Zulu War. Other activities include horse riding and hiking; a round of golf on one of the 9 and
18-hole courses as well as game viewing at Ithala Game Reserve or the Nambiti Conservancy. Don’t miss the chance of ‘ticking’ one of the nearly 400 species of bird that have been identified along the Amajuba Birding Meander – look out for Barn Swallows in the Newcastle area as they return to their nesting site between midOctober and mid-March. They swirl in great masses in the air above before swooping down and diving into the reeds as the sun goes down.

DISCOVERING THE BATTLEFIELDS OF THE ANGLO-ZULU WAR Ken Gillings (ISBN: 978-1-920143-90-9) There are, of course, many more Anglo-Zulu War sites to be seen: Discovering the Battlefields will enable visitors to find them and to read an account that is not too lengthy yet has sufficient content to bring it to life. GPS co-ordinates will enable those wishing to undertake a journey of exploration. The book is also a useful training manual for prospective battlefield guides. Above all, however, the author shares his knowledge gleaned from over 50 years of researching the Anglo-Zulu War. He has blended first-hand accounts passed on from participants on both sides to subsequent generations with official or newly-researched information that has become available in recent years. It is written in a style that is neither technical nor dramatic, is extensively illustrated with photographs of personalities and places and includes comprehensive maps of all the battle sites.
THE ROAD TO ULUNDI REVISITED (978-1-928211-28-0) Zulu War Sketches of an Artist on the March: John North Crealock In Victorian times, it was to an officer’s advantage to be good at sketching. Lt-Col John North Crealock was a veteran of the Indian Mutiny and a skilled painter in watercolors. Crealock’s paintings were given to the Regimental Museum, where they are now housed. In 1964, a selection of the water colours was copied by the University of Natal Press and published in a book entitled The Road to Ulundi. South African historian Ken Gillings spent three years identifying and photographing the sites depicted in the book and was impressed by their accuracy. The trustees of the Museum of the Mercian Regiment (of which the Sherwood Foresters was an antecedent regiment) have kindly given the publishers the go-ahead to republish the sketches, with the accompanying photographs and explanatory notes prepared by Gillings. www - WHAT, WHERE & WHEN Feb-March 2016 41
UMZINYATHI
Rich in history, culture & striking beauty
UMZINYATHI IS A HISTORICALLY RICH REGION, RENOWNED FOR ITS NATURAL BEAUTY. THE DISTRICT IS SITUATED IN NORTHWEST KWAZULU-NATAL, BORDERED BY THE MIDLANDS IN THE WEST, THE DRAKENSBERG IN THE NORTH, AND ZULULAND TO THE EAST. The Umzinyathi region bears memories of the wars that swept across South Africa between 1879 and 1902, but its history starts long before this. The legendary King Shaka and the Zulu nation created upheaval among local tribes, the Voortrekkers crossed the mountains to settle on the land, while the British colonists had settled at what was known as ‘Port Natal’, now Durban. What followed was an era of war, as the Zulus, Voortrekkers and British clashed in some of the bloodiest battles in the history of South Africa, shaping the towns and villages of this region. The wars were fought over land and sovereignty, and played out over almost 100 years. Today people travel from around the world to revisit these momentous events in our history.

Rorke’s Drift Rorke’s Drift, located 45 kilometres southeast of Dundee, is the site of one of the most famous battles of the Anglo-Zulu War. It is a tranquil village nestled at the foot of a rocky outcrop, a few kilometres from the Mzinyathi River. At the entrance to the village is a traditional Zulu umuzi (village), with beehive huts encircling an Nguni cattle kraal. (main photo pictured above). The umuzi offers visitors the chance to truly experience traditional Zulu lifestyle; be captivated by the pure energy of Zulu dancers, milk an Nguni cow, taste home-brewed Zulu beer and sleep the night in a beehive hut. Further into the village is the Rorke’s Drift Battlefield and Museum, which has attracted much acclaim for its displays of the Anglo-Zulu War.

NORTH COAST The KwaZulu-Natal’s North Coast is an unspoilt natural environment with a lush subtropical coastline and warm waters, stretching from Umdloti just north of Umhlanga, to the mouth of the uThukela River. This lush sub-tropical region is the playground of bottlenose dolphins which frolic in the waters close to shore, and a shoreline that offers a perfect combination of golden beaches and sheltered coves, perfect for sun, surf, fishing or snorkelling.

Divers can view a wide variety of marine life can be viewed on one of the three artificial reefs created by the Oceanographic Research Institute. During the 1990’s an old Portuguese prawn trawler, the Fantao, and a decommissioned floating crane were towed out to sea and sunk. In addition to this, a third reef was created when The Fame sunk in these waters in 2000. 44 www - WHAT, WHERE & WHEN Feb-March 2016
A number of small towns and villages dot this developing coastline each with its own special offering. Ballito dates back to 1953, when a group of entrepreneurs began investigating land to develop, and is now a rapidly developing resort town with a wide choice of restaurants, entertainment and shopping opportunities. Other local summer residents are the European Barn Swallows, it is said they have called Mount Moreland home since the early 1970s. It is an incredible sight to witness up to 3 million of these tiny migratory birds as they gather together about half an hour before sunset, flying in their vast numbers over the reed-beds – best enjoyed from a picnic blanket at the special view site. An opportunistic Bat Hawk or Sooty Falcon may even be spotted swooping in for a quick bite during the evening display! As dusk falls, the swallows suddenly drop into the reed-beds and are gone. The rocky shores and tidal pools of the North Coast offer an underwater life that is often only seen by those donning wetsuits and scuba gear. This region is home to what is possibly the southern most shallow water coral on the planet thereby offering
snorkelers the opportunity of seeing Moray Eels, damselfish, butterfly fish, parrotfish and a variety of coral species. Whilst it is possible to explore on your own, a guided snorkelling experience will have you in the best spots and enable you to see more than you could ever have imagined… including the opportunity of snorkelling at night! A variety of activities abound for the adventure junkie, quad biking through the sugar cane fields to zip-lining or taking a flip along the magnificent coastline by microlight. For kids, and the curious-minded, there are the reptile and animal farms. This playground is a multicultural infusion of traditional Zulu history and the pioneering spirit of the early European and Indian settlers – a kaleidoscope of culture, nature and adventure.

The first Splashy Fen, held in October 1990, was the realisation of an idea first thought of when Peter and Almary Ferraz attended the ‘Festival of the Flower Children’ at Woburn Abbey in England in 1967. It may have taken 23 years, but they realised their dream - they expected 200 but 1200 attended that first two day event! 46 www - WHAT, WHERE & WHEN Feb-March 2016
