We experienced yet another successful holiday season, and for that I would also like to extend my appreciation to the tourism trade that ensures our holidaymakers continue to receive great service when visiting us. Furthermore, a big thank you goes to the people of KZN for being exceptional hosts and continuing to share their warmth with our visitors year after year. The tourism sector continues to thrive because each one of us plays a vital role in positioning KZN as the must-visit tourism destination. 2018 will be an action packed year once again, with exciting events all year round. Major events will continue to be a key contributor to the economy of the province, and again this year we will have a full calendar of exciting events. Already this month we are preparing to welcome thousands of sporting enthusiasts from all over the country for the Aquelle Midmar Mile happening from 10-11 February, followed by the FNB Dusi Canoe Marathon from 15-17 February. We encourage all participants and supporters to take some time to treat themselves to a short drive and explore some of the fascinating tourist attractions in the areas surrounding the locations where these two signature events are held. We will also be supporting more events around KZN to encourage more people to travel to less visited parts of KZN and to unearth the tourism potential of some of the rural areas of the province. Be on the lookout for these exciting new events on our website and social media pages. We’re already into February, the month of “Love“. February has become synonymous with romance, so there is no better place to spend Valentine’s Day with your loved one, than enjoying a romantic weekend getaway for two in one of our magnificent and special spots in KZN. We therefore encourage you to “Do Romance” here in KZN and create life long memories with your loved one. This year, we will continue with our “Do KZN” domestic campaign to encourage people to explore the delights of the province. The microsite on our website has made things that much easier for you to book your next holiday in KZN. We

continue to put together different packages tailor-made to suit the various lifestyles and needs of our travellers. So, whether you are looking for a family beach holiday, a romantic getaway, luxury travel, safari or adventure, we have done all the ground work for you, so you can just DO KZN and enjoy your much deserved break. We are also working on a “Know your KZN” campaign with various media partners to further enlighten the people of KZN about our exceptional province. The province has so much to offer, not only for our out-oftown tourists, but there are so many gems for the people of KZN to discover and enjoy also, without even having to travel outside the Zulu Kingdom. The Human Rights Day holiday on 21 March 2018, which falls in the middle of the week, will also give you another chance to take a long weekend break in the Zulu Kingdom. We encourage you always to plan your holidays well in advance to take advantage of our “Do KZN” specials on flights and accommodation. In order to continue to grow and defend our domestic tourism market share, we will be embarking on a series of activations focusing on landlocked provinces to encourage more holidaymakers to “Do Beach” in KZN for their next holiday. The Dick King statue located on the esplanade commemorates his heroic ride to Grahamstown in 1842 to obtain help for the besieged British Garrison on the site of where the Old Fort stands today. February is the month of love, and where better to celebrate this than in the KwaZuluNatal Midlands with its country lanes, quaint coffee shops and sublime spas? The Karkloof Canopy Tour offers adrenalin junkies a rush as you whizz past towering trees, cliff faces dotted with orchids and over a pristine forest floor… and hot-air ballooning enables you to view it all from above. Perhaps born out of the desire to fulfil those dreaded New Year’s resolutions, the months of February and March have a number of sporting events to get you moving. Midmar Dam is the venue for one of the world’s largest open-water events, the Midmar Mile (10-11 February), which sees thousands from all walks of life swimming the ‘mile’. This picturesque location is also where Umgeni Water Marathon (25 March) takes place during National Water Week - another marathon to look out for are the Maritzburg City Marathon (25 February), a qualifier event for the iconic Comrades Marathon held in June. The Dusi Canoe Marathon

(15-17 February), another epic event, sees paddlers racing the roughly 120km starting on the uMsundusi River at Camps Drift in Pietermaritzburg and finishing three days later on the uMngeni River at Blue Lagoon in Durban. Not wanting to break out a sweat? Then pick up a Midlands Meander map and explore some of the routes offering visitors easy directions to a wealth of fabulous cuisine, historic landmarks and artist studios. There are plenty of ‘shop till you drop’ opportunities to take home the perfect handwoven rug, a designer pottery teapot or deliciously creamy Swiss-styled local goats cheese. Kids will love exploring the gardens of Groundcover, painting their own pottery at the Zulu-Lulu Art Bar or feeding the goats at Swissland Cheese. Be sure to pop in to the Mandela Capture Site to view the remarkable sculpture that marks the place where former president, Nelson Mandela was captured. Alongside the sculpture is a temporary exhibition telling the story of Nelson Mandela’s journey from comrade, leader, prisoner and negotiator to statesman.

DID YOU KNOW? The idea for Dusi Canoe Marathon was born in Italy during the Second World War by a tired and homesick Ian Player. The first race in 1950 had to be abandoned, but the year 1951 saw an exhausted Ian Player, six days later, being the only one of eight to complete this gruelling race. The race is now the biggest canoeing event on the African continent, attracting between 1600 and 2000 local and international paddlers each year.

THE DUSI CANOE MARATHON 15-17 February

The Dusi Canoe Marathon was founded in 1951, and covers roughly 120km between the cities of Pietermaritzburg and Durban in KwaZulu-Natal, on the East Coast of South Africa. It is the biggest canoeing event on the African continent, and one of the world’s most popular river marathons, attracting between 1600 and 2000 paddlers each year. Paddlers can choose between normal marathon K1s, K2s or even K3s (yes a K4 has even finished the Dusi before). These boats need to be of robust construction to be able to take the knocks dished out by the rocky river, and must have an overstern rudder. Paddlers must wear splashcover (spraydescks) and lifejackets (PFDs) and, if very full river conditions occur, will be required to wear helmets. Paddlers must make provision for their own hydration, and carry enough fluids for each stage of the race. For South African paddlers, the race requires each entrant to be AR rated (having passed a basic proficiency test and then the required number of C and B rated river races), as well as successfully completing a number of qualifying races. international entrants are exempt from these requirements, but will be required to prove that they are proficient paddlers with suitable

experience on at least Grade 2 rivers, and to prove that they are currently in good physical condition. The race is held in mid-February every year, to take advantage of the summer rainfalls. Temperatures can be extreme, often exceeding 40 degrees Celsius in the valleys. The race starts on the uMsindusi River that runs through Pietermaritzburg and includes a number of weirs and Grade 1 to Grade 2+ rapids using water released from Henley Dam. At roughly the halfway point of the race the uMsindusi River meets the far larger uMngeni River and the river becomes more challenging, with some rapids rated Grade 3+, and some of the trickier rapids like Island 2 is portaged by most of the field. Most of the large rapids can be portaged if desired. Safety marshalls and divers are stationed at some of the major obstacles and rapids. The route is not marked and the onus is on the paddlers to learn the route and the safe lines down the more demanding rapids and weirs. The race is unique in that it includes numerous portages where the paddlers carry their craft over hills, either to cut out unrunnable rapids and cataracts, or to eliminate long loops in the river. Most of these portages are through thick bush on steep and undulating terrain, and several of them are around 4km in length.

There are several seconding stations on portages during each leg of the race where seconds (friends or family) provide water and sports drinks, and in some cases food as well. Stage One of the race is 42km long, from Camps Drift in the city of Pietermaritzburg to Dusi Bridge, a remote area outside Cato Ridge close to Nagle dam. Most paddlers exit the valley after their stage and stay in local accommodation or return to either Durban or Pietermaritzburg. It is possible to stay in tents at the overnight stop. Stage Two is the longest and hardest stage, 46km from Dusi Bridge to Msinsi Resort on Inanda dam outside Hillcrest, and ends with 11km of flatwater on the dam. The overnight stop is well suited to camping and also hosts some entertainment in the early evening of Day Two. Hillcrest and Durban are nearby and most paddlers leave the valley after their stage to stay in nearby accommodation. Stage Three is 36km from Inanda dam to Blue Lagoon in Durban, starting with 4km of flatwater on Inanda dam and ending with 10km of flatwater on the tidal estuary into the finish. Each finisher receives a Dusi medal and a commemorative race garment. The race prize giving takes place at Blue Lagoon after the final stage.

This annual race takes place in the small town of Howick, located just outside of Pietermaritzburg. While considered an ideal spot for boating, water-skiing, fishing and picnicking for locals, once a year the Midmar dam attracts multitudes of contestants - both swimming novices and athletes who wish swim the dam’s full length of a mile. In 2009, the Midmar Mile was recognised in the Guinness Book of Records when 13 755 competitors finished the race, making it the world’s largest open water swimming event. In order to accommodate the vast number of contestants, swimmers go out in five different groups at three-minute intervals in 8 separate mile races over two days.

ELEPHANT COAST The Elephant Coast was named after a large herd of African elephant that lived in the region for centuries – they were once hunted out, but have been reintroduced in recent years and are now readily seen in many of the reserves in the region. These include the Hluhluwe-Imfolosi Game Reserve, Mkuze Game Reserve, Tembe Elephant Park, some private game reserves as well as the iSimangaliso Wetland Park which was South Africa’s first proclaimed World Heritage Site and stretches from Kosi Bay to about 20km south of Maphelane. This region must be one of South Africa’s most beautiful and unspoilt areas with mountainous sand dunes, thick coastal forest, and pristine beaches, as well as lakes and ocean. There are a number of paths and trails in the iSimangaliso Wetland Park that invite visitors to explore the dense evergreen forests of towering fig trees, marvel at the lush ferns and wild orchids and the wild date and Lala palms dotting the landscape. The iSimangaliso Wetland Park recently completed a tree labelling project aimed at the interpretation of natural and cultural heritage in the World Heritage Site. During this intensive exercise, over 2000 tree labels were placed on common, rare and endemic species of indigenous trees along a number of the trails in the region. Be sure to take your smart phone with you as the QR codes on each tree label allow access to a wealth of natural and cultural information. The sea and pristine beaches along this coastline provide the ideal location for a variety of adventures, offering scuba diving,

snorkelling and angling and the possibility of seeing Loggerhead and Leatherback turtles coming ashore to lay their eggs. During the summer months, generally from November to the end of February, a few selected lodges offer guests the privilege of a turtle tracking experience in the company a resident turtle expert to help monitor the turtles’ behaviour and nesting numbers. In addition, these lodges are perfectly located for special romantic getaways. This region also offers some of South Africa’s finest birding, with over 25 different birding spots and more than 500 species recorded. The uMkhuze section of the iSimangaliso Wetland Park also boasts more than 420 species recorded, and is renowned for its game-viewing hides. Use a registered local guide to gain the benefit of their excellent observation skills and ability to find the ‘specials’ of a specific birding site - this not only adds value to any birding outing, but is an income generating opportunity for community bird guides.

DID YOU KNOW? There is rich Zulu and Thonga cultural heritage in this region, and the tree labels in the iSimangaliso Wetland Park include the different names for each species of tree on the labels - one such tree is the Waterberry tree (Syzygium cordatum), umdoni in Zulu and andoni in Thonga… it has been used to treat chest infections, stomach problems and diarrhoea. Some tree species can have many isiZulu and Thonga names depending on the area in which the tree is found.

ZULULAND Come to a place where the breathtaking hills and valleys are matched by heartfelt hospitality and Zulu traditions. Drink from the calabash at a traditional tribal village, savour the aroma of shisanyama at a township tavern… or get ‘lost’ in the wilds of a nature reserve, a long stretch of beach or on the back of a game viewing vehicle.

The Umlalazi Nature Reserve in Mtunzini offers visitors wonderful opportunities to experience both land and water… canoe and fish in the estuaries, take romantic strolls along the beautiful beach, swim in the sea, spot wonderful birdlife and a variety of small game in the coastal forest. Or get adventurous at one of the reserves – some offer 4x4 and mountain bike trails…nothing like cycling amongst giraffe and zebra with croaking cisticolas and plainback pipits in the background. Be sure to pop in to the KwaZulu Cultural Museum at

Ondini, which was opened in 1984. It houses one of the most representative collections of the rich cultural heritage of the region and is famous for is collection of beadwork. There are also a number of items which belonged to King Cetswayo who ruled the Zulu nation during the Anglo-Zulu war of 1879. The Pongolapoort Dam is the southernmost point in Africa and the only place in South Africa where tiger fishing can be done. The ferocious fighting Tiger Fish is a major angling game-fish with a series of eight large, protruding, sharply pointed teeth - so watch your fingers! The dam is surrounded by conservation areas which provide spectacular game viewing from the water’s edge, is ideal for birders wanting to see a variety of waterbirds, such as cormorants, herons, ducks and storks. If you’re lucky you may even see elephant frolicking in the water.

Prior to the construction of the Pongolapoort Dam in 1973, the land was Africa’s first formally recognised conservation area - the Pongola Game Reserve, proclaimed in 1894 by then President of the Transvaal Republic Paul Kruger. BATTLEFIELDS The Battlefields region is a popular destination for history buffs with the landscape dotted with numerous reminders of some of the bloodiest battles in history fought between, Zulu, Brit and Boer. This region, however, not only plays host to countless monuments and well-preserved artefacts, its hills and valleys are home to sporting and adventure activities, game reserves, art and crafts as well as golf courses and even hot springs.

The wars that swept across South Africa between 1879 and 1902 were brutal, but its history started long before this with the legendary King Shaka and the Zulu nation creating upheaval among local tribes. The Voortrekkers had crossed the Drakensberg to settle on the land, and the British colonists had settled at what was known as ‘Port Natal’, now Durban. What followed was an era of war, as the Zulus, Voortrekkers and British clashed in some of the bloodiest battles in the history of South Africa, shaping the towns and villages of this region. The wars were fought over land and sovereignty, and played out over almost 100 years. Today people travel from around the world to revisit the areas where these momentous events in our history took place. The month of February remembers a number of lesser known battles that were fought in the vicinity of Estcourt – with no on site information at some of these memorials, the use of a guide will enhance the experience. Saailaager is the site of an attack by the Zulus on the Voortrekker laagers in the Bushman’s River on the 12 February 1838; Rensburg Koppie is the site where the heroic Marthinus Oosthuyse risked his life on the

17 February 1838 to deliver ammunition to three families under siege by the Zulus thereby enabling them to drive the Zulus off and Bloukrans is the memorial site of approximately 282 Voortrekkers and 250 servants who were killed during the Zulu attacks of 16 and 17 February 1838. This region offers great wildlife and adventure experiences too… from the romantic lodges of the Nambiti Conservancy near Ladysmith, perfect for a Valentine’s getaway, to the quant town of Utrecht – a town within a game park that is tucked beneath the Balele Mountains. Experience the thrill of white water rafting on the Thukela River, or the gentle pursuit of fly fishing the cool trout waters near Newcastle, and don’t miss the chance of ‘ticking’ one of the nearly 400 species of bird that have been identified along the Amajuba Birding Meander – look out for Barn Swallows in the Newcastle area as they return to their nesting site between mid-October and midMarch. They swirl in great masses in the air above before swooping down and diving into the reeds and a sudden silence follows as the sun goes down.

DID YOU KNOW? It’s not just humans that involve a little ‘necking’ in their courtship… the dominant male of the herd is the one who gets the girl, and he does so with the gentle stroking action of necking. This is not to be confused with the more robust neck wrestling of young males or the somewhat violent necking of old bulls.

A visit to the museum is a once in a lifetime and humbling experience, that fills one with awe and inspiration…. Established as a cultural institution the museum is charged with conserving, upholding, promoting and propagating the life, values, philosophies and legacy of the extraordinary South African leader, Chief Albert Luthuli. He set the standard for peace, humanity, equality and non-racism on the African continent. Under the apartheid regime most correspondence and literature generated by Chief Luthuli was banned, confiscated or located outside South Africa, at the time of the Luthuli Museum’s inauguration, the only surviving artefact on site was the physical home of Chief Luthuli. much with memory and the intangible as with more conventional museum artefacts. Since its formation, the Luthuli Museum has subsequently been involved in a rigorous process of collecting and repatriating oral histories, photographs, paintings, documents and other artefacts to assist with developing knowledge about the Legacy of Chief Luthuli and the Liberation Struggle in South Africa. Take the time to walk through the original 1927 home of Chief Albert Luthuli where he met top ANC leaders like Nelson Mandela in secret. Take the time to listen to his speech made in 1961 in Oslo, Norway when he accepted the Nobel Peace Prize & became the first African to receive this prestigious award. DRAKENSBERG With its dramatic peaks, sheer cliffs and deep gorges the uKhahlamba Drakensberg Park offers memorable experiences and activities to suit everyone, from the adrenalin rush of tubing down the mighty Thukela to a romantic spa treatment followed by a sundowner as the sun sets over a spectacular mountain scene. Reaching 3000 metres above sea level the awe inspiring Drakensberg Mountains and the 243 000 hectare mountain park that they are a part of, requires no second invitation to visitors. The southern Drakensberg offers visitors a wealth of outdoor activities; from trout fishing in one of the abundant crystal clear lakes or rivers, to hiking in the Loteni Nature Reserve, which is renowned for its beautiful scenery and is home to reedbuck, blesbuck, eland, bushbuck and oribi. Traverse the highest pass-road in South Africa by 4x4 along the upper Mkomazana River up Sani Pass to the border with Lesotho (2874 metres above sea-level) and enjoy lunch for two at the highest pub in Africa, or a cold beer on the lookout deck outside. And then rock the night away at the annual Splashy Fen Music Festival on a farm just outside Underberg (29 March – 1 April). Cool off with a dip in an icy mountain pool or river after couple of hours of hiking, then rest awhile and cast your gaze sky-ward and watch the enormous lammergeyer (bearded

vultures) as they fly overhead. Seek out ancient Bushman rock art, evidence of the San people who lived in the area long time ago – the earliest of these paintings are about 3 000 years old. No time to hike up to a secluded cave? Then check out the collection of San artefacts and insightful interpretation of their life at the Himeville Museum. Take a picture of the spectacular Amphitheatre, which is possibly the most photographed feature of the northern Drakensberg. Hike up to the source of the Thukela River, and watch as it plunges some 950 metres over the edge of the Mont-auxSources Plateau in spectacular fashion. And talking of heights… or should I say depths, schedule a visit to the Drakensberg Pumped Water Storage Scheme – its power station is located a whopping 50 storeys below ground level!

DID YOU KNOW? The shaft from the access point to the Drakensberg Pumped Water Storage Scheme is drilled into the mountain with the turbines and generators located an effective 50 storeys below ground level, and even the offices are underground. Nothing disturbs the surface landscape except the wires and pylons. These turbines are reversible, i.e. they pump water up to the Sterkfontein Dam at night when the need for electricity is low, and then generate electricity during the day by hydroelectric power when the water rushes back down – at a rate of 70 000 litres of water per second!

UNDERBERG 29 March - 2 April 2018 AN EXCITING MAIN STAGE LINE-UP FOR SPLASHY FEN #2018 Splashy Fen have secured three international acts who will be joining the line-up this year. Namely, Bowling For Soup from the USA, percussion dance act Napalma from Brazil, and from Australia, the folk duo Pierce Brothers will all be headlining at the festival. Cheeky Texan outfit Bowling For Soup were formed in 1994 and to date have created 13 successful punk-pop albums. The Grammy nominated band have had popular hits such as ‘1985’, ‘High School Never Ends’ and ‘Girls All the Bad Guys Want’ and promise to keep the energy alive at Splashy Fen this year with songs to sing and jump along to. Australian folk duo, Pierce Brothers have taken their music from busking on the streets of Melbourne to the world. And now Splashy Fen. Fans can look forward to an irresistible energy from twin brothers Jack and Pat Pierce as they bring their multi-instrumentalists vibes and world-class live show to the stage.

Napalma is the musical inspiration born out of a fusion between Brazilian and African culture and music. Created in 2004 during a carnival in Brazil, the act has been touring and performing around the globe for the past thirteen years. This year, they make a stop in Underberg, to thrill fans with their powerful electronic dance grooves, percussion and rhythms. In its early days, the festival genre focused heavily on folk and light folk-rock with the inclusion of black music styles, and in later years, kwaito, alternative rock, rap, hip hop and in very recent years, electro. “Today, we are extremely excited and proud to have worked on building such a diverse line-up for 2018.” Says Stu Berry, Festival Director. “We have created what we believe is our strongest main stage line-up to date, with three international performers complimented by South Africa’s top musical acts and bands.”

In its third year under new management, Splashy Fen Music Festival promises another happy experience – with a massive selection of international and local artists, top quality facilities, great family entertainment, exceptional health and security services and a new and improved venue layout; it’s the experience that makes Splashy Fen the great success that it is today.
