We are in the middle of the year and KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) has already achieved so much in the tourism sector. We hosted another successful Tourism INDABA in May and KZN was announced as the successful bidder to host “Africa’s Travel INDABA” for the next five years. We also took this opportunity to engage with many buyers and international media, who attended the exhibition and our annual business breakfast, on the latest tourism sector developments that we believe will take KZN to greater heights. It is also thrilling to see that members of the tourism trade remain committed to growing the sector and continue to invest in new properties and upgrading their establishments. Some of these properties are:

The Ugu Jazz Festival will see top SA musical talents, such as Brenda Mntambo, Jimmy Dludlu, Ringo Madlingozi, Amanda Black and many more, performing on 24 June at Ugu Sports and Leisure Centre in Port Shepstone.

Thonga Beach Lodge in the Elephant Coast upgraded and renovated all their 24 bedrooms. Now guests can enjoy and explore one of Africa’s last unspoilt wilderness beaches in luxury.

Isibindi Zulu Lodge in Zululand will reopen in August after undergoing a complete refurbishment, which will include reupholstered furniture at the main lodge area, the lounge and the dining area. Rooms will be redecorated with new furniture and bathrooms will be remodelled.

Fashionistas, celebrities, socialites and horse racing enthusiasts will pour into KZN for one of the biggest events on the social calendar of South Africa, the Vodacom Durban July, on 1 July 2017. This year’s event will be themed, “The Colour of Magic”.

Midlands Saddle and Trout, a stud farm managed by First Group, has undergone a head to toe refurbishment worth R16.7 million. The extensive renovations will include redecorating all 59 chalets and will be completed at the end of the year.

Ebandla Hotel will also be opening a new hotel in Jozini at the end of year. The hotel will boast over 50 rooms, conference facilities and a VIP restaurant and bar.
KZN has become a firm favourite for holidaymakers looking for a bit of sun to escape the winter chills. We have some signature events that will definitely provide lots of warmth. • The Comrades Marathon takes place on 4 June 2017, starting from Durban and heading up to Pietermaritzburg. • Rugby lovers will be thrilled to see the Springboks take on France at GrowthPoint Kings Park on 17 June 2017.

• The Dundee July Rural Horseracing event will be held in Dundee on 22 July 2017. • The 38th Durban International Film Festival (DIFF) will run between the 13th and the 23rd July 2017. This year, we will continue with our partnership with the East Coast Radio House and Garden Show to promote intraprovincial travel through the KZN Travel and Adventure Show, running from 30 June to 9 July 2017, at the Durban Exhibition Centre. THE COLD SEASON HAS STARTED. WINTER HAS ARRIVED. Dudu and Sipho are spending their holidays with Gogo. Gogo (granny) treats them to a trip to Phezulu Safari Park for a weekend. While planning the events of the day to include a game drive and the reptile park, a bee comes in and the commotion starts. Gogo (granny) manages to chase the bee away and the children settle down and carry on with their plans. Gogo (granny) immediately gets to tell them a short story about how they used to search for the bee hives in order to harvest honeycombs from forest around winter. Honeycomb acts as a home for storing unhatched young bees. It also stores the honey created by the pollen and nectar from flowers.

She also tells them that honey tastes different depending on the flowers that grow in the different areas. All honey tastes sweet but some even tastes sweeter. Dudu & Sipho is a kiddies brand, created with the idea of introducing African superheroes and bringing diversity to the animation industry.
Dudu and Sipho find this very interesting and learn how nature works. While still trying to think about the process of honey...... they realise that it’s almost time to go for a ride on the Umgeni Steam Train. When the train gets to Inchanga Railway where there’s a craft market, they are able to see all the handcrafted products that are being sold. Gogo manages to spot a table where they are selling honey and the children can’t help but share the story.
Their names were chosen because they are identifiable within different ethnic groups.

#GottaLuvKZN AFRICA’S TRAVEL INDABA REMAINS IN KWAZULU-NATAL, DURBAN FOR THE NEXT FIVE YEARS. KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) and Durban are ready to put more investment into INDABA, now known as Africa’s Travel Indaba, after President Jacob Zuma announced on Tuesday, 16 May 2017, that KZN and Durban were the successful bidders to host this prestigious travel show until 2022. Durban, KZN will also have the option to extend the hosting agreement of INDABA in 2022 for another five years. Commenting about what has been a very successful INDABA 2017 for the province of KwaZulu-Natal, the MEC for Economic Development, Tourism and Environmental Affairs, Mr Sihle Zikalala, said, “We are thrilled that the province has once again won the bid to host INDABA for the next five years. This will give us an opportunity to further invest in the show and ensure that it continues to grow and increase its contribution to province’s GDP. Ultimately, we want to cement our relationships with international tour operators and grow international travel from our neighbouring
countries. We want to build a tourism sector that will be felt around the province including townships and rural areas.” Tourism KwaZulu-Natal and Durban Tourism, together with members of the tourism trade and media, jointly hosted a cocktail function on 18 May 2017, the last day of INDABA, to mark this prestigious honour. Her Worship the Mayor of eThekwini Cllr.Zandile Gumede stated that after engagements with Industry leaders during INDABA, “It is evident that robust engagements need to take place between the public and private sector to grow tourism together. Transformation in the tourism sector will also be high on the tourism agenda and we will ensure that emerging entrepreneurs are given necessary resources and skills to develop new products and experiences for the city. We look forward to the innovation, rapid infrastructural development and transformation of the tourism INDABA over the next five years.” The city and the province will be working very closely together with South African
Tourism to ensure that the Africa Travel Indaba continues to grow from strength to strength by attracting quality buyers and exhibitors from all over the continent.

Dance Africa Dance, a vibrant largescale original musical theatre production, will be staged at Durban’s Playhouse from 7 – 11 June as a showcase of creative talent from throughout Africa, ahead of travelling to Russia as part of the African support team for Cameroon during the Confederation Cup. Creative live-wire, Sifiso Mthethwa and his Vision Faces team have conceived of a 100% original production which talks to the continent of Africa’s inherent love of soccer, dance and music as a unifier, and common thread among strangers. Mthethwa has cast a multi-national collaborative company of dancers and musicians from KZN, Cameroon, Kenya, Nigeria, Rwanda and Ghana. The production uses English as its central language, while incorporating Mothertongue influences and themes from participating nations. The company is 50-member strong, comprising performers, dancers, musicians, drummers and support staff. As part of the social-cohesion process, the cast have collaborated to envision, write and devise the production, under the framework and direction of Mthethwa. Dance Africa Dance will proudly represent the African continent in Moscow, St. Pietersburg and Sochi and then to tour to China – performing in three cities; Shanghai, Hong Kong and Hangzhou. Now in his 71st year, Uys doesn’t glance back at the successes and failures that have strengthened his belief in a constant improvement of his work, but at those small signposts that throughout his life subconsciously pointed him in a right and original direction: his father Hannes Uys and his mother Helga Bassel; his grandmothers, his teachers, his passions, Sophia Loren, censorship, false eyelashes and making a noise when everyone demanded silence. The KZN Philharmonic’s eagerly anticipated Winter Season concerts run in the Durban Hall every Thursday, from 1 to 22 June, starting at 19h30. Concert-goers can look forward to the performances of masterworks by Haydn, Beethoven, Brahms, Rachmaninoff and a host of other greats, interpreted by
internationally accomplished guest artists who are set to collaborate with ‘Africa’s Premiere Orchestra’ in bringing its programmes to life. The season sees the return of the Russianborn, Durban based conductor, Naum Rousine, along with KZNPO’s Associate Guest Conductor, the Israeli-American maestro Daniel Boico, and Daniel Raiskin, Principal Guest Conductor of the Belgrade Philharmonic. We also welcome, among others, two distinguished pianists: the Czech soloist, Lukas Vondracek, and his prize-winning Belgian contemporary, Liebrech Vanbeckenvoort; and two remarkable ensembles from the New York City, the renowned Yale Glee Club Choir, and the first ever Affiliate Ensemble of Carnegie Hall, DECODA. The Greyville Race Course track’s infield is home to the Royal Durban Golf Club, which was first established in 1892 as a very ‘rough’ course with a wood and iron shanty ‘club house’ - it was rebuilt in 1932 with a brand new club house and new course layout. In April that year the Durban Golf Club was granted permission to use the prefix “Royal” by King George V, making it one of only four golf clubs in southern Africa to obtain this honour.

When Europeans arrived at the Port of Natal in 1825, the Valley of 1000 Hills was a remote and isolated area teeming with game. WS Field was one of the first Europeans to settle in 1851, and leopards were said to occasionally spend the night on the veranda of the Field homestead in what is now Kloof. Within a few years a wagon route opened up between Durban and the interior, close to what is now the Old Main Road. The establishment of the railway line linking the goldfields with the port rapidly followed the discovery of gold in the Transvaal in the 1880s, and the rail and road traffic through the 1000 Hills increased.

On the 7 June 1893, while Mahatma Gandhi was on his way to Pretoria, a white man objected to his presence in a first-class carriage and he was ordered to move to the end of the train. Gandhi, who had a first class ticket, refused and he was thrown off the train. While shivering through a winter night in the station waiting room, he made the decision to stay in South Africa and fight the racial discrimination against Indians. ZULULAND
Located along the coast of the Zululand region is the picturesque village of Mtunzini, the harbour town, Richards Bay, where, beyond the bays of the harbour, the rolling waves of the warm Indian Ocean crash onto golden beaches adjoined by lush coastal forests. Move inland and you’ll find breath-taking scenery, traditional tribal villages and warm-hearted people… this is of course the rural heart of Zululand.

It is said that the beautiful Narina Trogan is named after the mistress of French ornithologist François Le Vaillant in the 1780s. For more info check out the website www.zululand.kzn.org.za It is an area dotted with game reserves offering wildlife experiences, hiking, nature trails and traditional Zulu experiences. It’s a place where you can unexpectedly be invited to share a meal or drink from the calabash as the sorghum beer is passed around, a place where weddings are a community affair and ‘coming of age’ ceremonies celebrated – the Zulu people are very hospitable and you may well end up an honoured guest. A great way to experience a taste of what this region has to offer is to follow Route 66, one of the oldest trade routes through Zululand between Gingindlovu and Phongolo. Settlers in Port Natal (now Durban) would set off in oxwagons on well-worn tracks into the heart of the Zulu Kingdom to hunt and trade, stopping first for permission to do so from the Zulu king. Today’s visitors can include a visit to the Amatigulu Nature Reserve, which offers great ‘beach and bush’ activities, or the Umlalazi Nature Reserve in the little town of Mtunzini, where the Mlalazi River makes its way lazily into the Indian Ocean through a zigzagging lagoon with mangrove swamps and coastal forest.
Along the route is the historic town of Eshowe, home to the Fort Nongqayi Museum Village and the Dlinza Forest Aerial Boardwalk, which, at 125-metres long and at an elevation of 10 metres, allows visitors to walk right under the canopy of the indigenous scarp forest. Early morning is the best time to visit when the forest echoes with the calls of Trumpeter Hornbills, Purple-crested Turacos and Narina Trogons, just a few of the 65 forest bird species in Dlinza. Just off the main route is the KwaBulawayo Cultural Centre. It was here that King Shaka established his military headquarters and here that he was betrayed by Mzilikaze kaMashabane. Further along the route is the Emakhosini Cultural Heritage Park, in the legendary Valley of the Kings, Nongoma, the royal city of Zululand and home of King Goodwill Zwelethini and his royal palaces, and the town of Phongola as well as the Phongola Game Reserve.

The KwaZulu-Natal Battlefields Route boasts the largest concentration of significant battles and war related sites in South Africa – with 82 battlefields, museums, old fortifications and places of remembrance bearing testimony to the wars that swept across South Africa between 1879 and 1902. But the region’s history starts long before this, with the legendary King Shaka and the Zulu nation creating upheaval among local tribes.

The Battle of Spioenkop boasts having three future world figures present during the battle that raged on the summit of the mountain on the 24 January 1900; Louis Botha, who became South Africa’s first Prime Minister and helped to draft the constitution of the League of Nations (later the United Nations), Winston Churchill, and a young Indian stretcher bearer named Mohandas Gandhi – later the Mahatma. 30 www - WHAT, WHERE & WHEN June-July 2017
For more info check out the website www.battlefields.kzn.org.za The Voortrekkers had crossed the Drakensberg to settle on the land, and the British colonists had settled at what was known as ‘Port Natal’, now Durban. What followed was an era of war, as the Zulus, Voortrekkers and British clashed in some of the bloodiest battles in the history of South Africa, shaping the towns and villages of this region. The wars were fought over land and sovereignty, and played out over almost 100 years. Today people travel from around the world to revisit the areas where these momentous events in our history took place. Most visit the ‘famous’ sites of Isandlwana, Rorke’s Drift and the Blood River/Ncome battlefield, reliving the battles through stories told by experienced and passionate Battlefield guides. They might also go to the site of the tragic Battle of Spionkop, where no one was the victor and many lives were lost, or the Seige of Ladysmith where a town was almost brought to its knees through severe shortages of food and other supplies. There are also many lesser known, and just as tragic tales should one dig a little deeper into this fascinating era of our land. One such story is that of the Prince Imperial, Louis Napoleon (son of Emperor Napoleon III), who was killed in an ambush
at uQweqwe, near Nqutu on 1 June 1879. Follow in his footsteps from Durban into where he sailed, to Pietermaritzburg, where he was the guest of the then Governor, and where he attended mass at the French-missionary-built St Mary’s chapel. From here, with other soldiers, he set off from Fort Napier for Zululand. During the British advance into Zululand, the Prince, a reconnaissance scout, along with eight others, was ambushed near a deserted kraal where they had dismounted. Their guide as well as two soldiers were killed, the other soldiers managing to gallop off, but the Prince, unable to mount his frightened horse, fell to the ground to face his foes – who said that he ‘fought like a lion’. Not only did he die, but along with him so did the Bonaparte dynasty.

The Ballito Pro and Ballito Women’s Pro, both sponsored by Billabong, feature some of the world’s best surfers and runs from 27 June to 9 July on Willard Beach. Alongside the surfing, visitors will be spoiled for choice with non-stop activities providing even more entertainment throughout the Ballito festival site. The Lammergeyer, or bearded vulture as it is commonly known as, is one of the shyest vultures and lives an almost solitary existence on remote mountains and cliff faces. The Drakensberg offers some of the best fly fishing opportunities in South Africa, so try your hand at fly fishing in some the excellent trout waters, which include well stocked dams and lakes as well as pristine stretches of river - the Underberg-Himeville Trout Fishing Club holding rights to more than 160km of river plus 60 dams with a surface area exceeding 400 hectares. Whether you’re a serious and skilled fly-fishermen, or have only recently embraced this most challenging and personally satisfying angling pursuit, this region has a stretch of water that is sure to delight. A trip up Sani Pass, the highest pass-road in South Africa, to the border with Lesotho offers wonderful views and the chance of finding yourself in a winter wonderland – just remember to take your winter woollies, and passport! The Bushman or San paintings are one of the Drakensberg’s greatest cultural treasures. Some 20 000 individual rock paintings have been recorded at 500 different cave and overhang sites between Royal Natal National Park in the north and Bushman’s Nek in
the south. Subjects of the paintings range from animals (mainly eland) and humans, to ox-wagons and even mounted men with rifles. Most Giant’s Castle caves contain San art but the highlight is found undoubtedly the Main Caves’ Museum, where audiovisual and standing displays depict the ‘life’ of the San. The renowned Giant’s Castle Lammergeyer Hide and vulture restaurant is accessible by 4x4 only and advance booking is required. Alternatively, there is a vulture restaurant located near the Drakensberg Sun Resort, and one near Cathedral Peak. The Drakensberg region offers many opportunities for you to stretch your legs and enjoy one of the many hiking routes on both lower and upper slopes - look out for eland, the enormous bearded vulture, and the spectacular mountain aloes that flower during the winter months.

One of the world’s greatest marine migrations – also referred to as the ‘Greatest Shoal on Earth’ and the ‘Sardine Run’ - takes place during the winter months each year. It is a phenomenon that has visitors to the region waiting in anticipation - will the millions of sardines that migrate up the coast be driven into shallow waters, and onto the beach this year? They are accompanied by dolphins, other large fish and the thousands of sea birds which all feed on them. Whether in the capable, experienced hands of an air- or seaborne tour operator, or simply armed with the Sardine Hotline number (082 284 9495) plus a pair of binoculars and plastic tub, the annual winter Sardine Run is a unique experience that guarantees memories for a lifetime. The South Coast plays host to nearly 500,000 visitors during June and July each year – besides the balmy winter weather, visitors get to enjoy the Sardine Season offerings from 1 to 19 July, which include numerous fun activities for kids and adults alike. Another highlight in the region is the Ugu Jazz and Cultural Festival on 24 June which,
now in its 7th year, is sure to deliver with its star-studded is line-up of SA jazz legends and upcoming artists. MTB enthusiasts will enjoy the first two of the five South Coast Fever MTB Series 2017 races – these being the Sardine MTB Race at Port Edward on 2 July, and the Ingeli Forest MTB on 30 July. For those looking for more leisurely pursuits, there are a number of scenic forest and coastal trails of varying distances and grading fit for the whole family. Other outdoor activities include hiking, kayaking – both sea and lagoon, and of course golf. Adrenalin junkies should head to the Oribi Gorge where you can experience the world’s highest gorge swing and Africa’s longest zip-line… or head to the world-renowned Aliwal Shoal and Protea Banks for shark cage diving. If you’re looking for ‘fast & furious’, the Dezzi Raceway has a number of events to satisfy motoring enthusiasts.

ELEPHANT COAST
The Elephant Coast is situated in the north-eastern part of KwaZulu-Natal and is considered by many as one of South Africa’s most beautiful and unspoilt areas with its diverse flora and fauna and abundant biodiversity. With this region extending from the Lubombo Mountains in the west to the warm Indian Ocean in the east, and from Mozambique in the north to the Umfolozi River in the south, it offers visitors every changing views of a wide variety of biodiversity and landscapes.

For more info check out the website www.elephantcoast.kzn.org.za Vegetation varies from dense evergreen forests of towering figs trees to vast sandy plains dotted with Lala palms, and thick coastal forest atop mountainous sand dunes… but the one that stands out, and is easily recognised, is the fever tree. Anyone who has seen the yellow-barked fever tree will not be surprised to learn that its Zulu name, Umkhanyakude, means ‘seen from afar’, and is also the name of this district municipality. This region is home to world class conservation areas like the renowned iSimangaliso Wetland Park, the Mkuze Game Reserve and the Hluhluwe iMfolozi Park, as well as a number of privately owned game reserves.
The African serval (Leptailurus serval) is the second fastest running cat, after the cheetah, and has exceptional hunting skills which have earned them the reputation as the ‘savannah stalker’. They are remarkably successful hunters and catch their intended victims about 50% of the time as opposed to other cats that succeed around 20% of the time.
The iSimangaliso Wetland Park is a conservation success story, and is one of the eight most important biodiversity hotspots on the planet. It is not only home to 467 endangered and threatened species, and is inhabited by eleven endemic species that cannot be found anywhere else, it is also responsible for some 8 000 tourism jobs, offers bursaries to young people, training in tourism, craft, and art among other options, and has created opportunities for local entrepreneurs. Some 14 000ha of exotic plantations have been removed, all but one of the historically naturally occurring animal species have been reintroduced, and the
ambitious St Lucia estuary rehabilitation project is nearing completion. As the largest protected area of coastal grasslands and savannah, iSimangaliso is the ideal habitat for servals, two of which have recently been released, bringing their numbers up to 11 – so look out for this beautiful spotted cat with a small head and long neck. The sea and pristine beaches provide the ideal location for more adventures, offering scuba diving, snorkelling and angling, whilst whale watching and fishing provide some offshore possibilities. The winter months are when the humpback whales migrate from their summer feeding grounds close to the poles, to warmer water to breed. A boat-based whale watching experience is something that memories are made of, but be sure to use a legal operator who abides by the whale watching regulations. In the safe hands of an experienced and knowledgeable skipper, you will be taken through the waves to seek out the gigantic Humpback Whale.
