WELCOME
Welcome to the seventh edition of YOUR WEDDING PLANNER GUIDE! We are, as always, thrilled to be a part of your wedding preparations and to provide you with the resources and essential advice that will make your special day just that…special! YOUR WEDDING PLANNER GUIDE has lots of ideas, info and inspiration for brides-to-be. Getting married in the beautiful province of KwaZulu-Natal is a great choice with magical destinations ranging from city hotels and beach resorts, to country estates, bushveld lodges and magnificent mountain getaways. Brides and grooms can choose from sophisticated venues and boutique hotels or explore the many venues – both grand and more intimate – on the coasts, as well as country-style receptions and safari-type weddings at ecolodges. Whether your perfect venue lies in a location close to your heart or at an exciting new destination, we hope that you’ll find just the right place to host the ceremony and reception of your dreams. As soon as you and your partner have sealed your engagement, consider the bigger picture and start asking yourselves some important questions. You already know who your special someone is, but have you thought about the ‘what’, ‘when’, ‘where’ and ‘how’ of your big day? What excites you and your partner? Allow yourself to dream a little, creating an image of your fantasy wedding in your head. Big and bold or cosy and intimate? Glitzy and glamorous or simple and eco-friendly? Urban chic or romantic and Bohemian? Get some inspiration on themes and décor on page 82. When will you say ‘I do’? Think about the season and your wedding theme, as well as practical considerations such as taking time off work and whether your chosen date is on a long

weekend or during the holidays: some venues and service providers book up well in advance and may be more expensive at those times. Where is the perfect place for your wedding celebration? Town or country? Near or far? Indoor or al fresco? From boutique hotels and 5-star accommodation in the city to bushveld locations, sugar plantations, coastal resorts and mountain manors, we’ve got the best locations in the province covered in our ‘Venues’ guide, starting on page 15. How will you be getting married? Church wedding or civil ceremony? What are the legal requirements? Will you be marrying under the Marriage Act, Customary Marriages Act or Civil Union Act? South African marriages are legally valid in the vast majority of countries, making it even easier for overseas brides and grooms to get married here. Consult the section on ‘Legal Advice’ on page 118. Work out a timeline and make sure everything runs according to plan? This issue kicks off with a countdown checklist on page 4 to help you book service providers and schedule appointments. This is followed by a helpful budget planner on page 10. For even more inspiration, look at our website www.yourweddingplannerguide.co.za for a digital copy of the magazine as well as lists of suppliers; or check out our Facebook page @yourweddingplannerguide for the latest information on all things wedding related. Happy planning!

COVER STORY
YOU CAN SAY THIS WEDDING COVER STORY IN PARTICULAR INCLUDES MANY STOREYS IN ITS MAKING! Rounding up after Mustoora & Rahils wedding we all headed to the Hilton Hotel to send the couple off with a creative night shoot before they wind down in their hotel room.Glamorous is definitely one way to describe this fun and in love couple, The clear night and stunning newly weds really made for some epic imagery. The particular cover photo shot was a spur of the moment idea to capture our brides dress in all its elegance & glory. We sat her down in the lobby, fixed her dress around her, set up our lights, I walked up two floors above, began shooting and our team made some magic happen! All in all it was a pleasurable and fun shoot to end off a beautiful wedding day.

VENA AMORIS
MAKING PEOPLE HAPPY IS OUR SPECIALITY!! Tungsten carbide is the new, most popular metal today for men’s wedding ring. The heavy weight and luxurious finish of a tungsten carbide ring speak of commitment, strength and an everlasting bond. The metal will always maintain its beautiful, scratch-resistant finish, making them the perfect choice for your loved ones wedding ring. At VA-Tungsten, we identified the need within men’s jewellery for a hard wearing, affordable ring that offers durability and sophistication. Men’s wedding rings up to now have been limited to very simple designs, and with much of a selection. Most of the men’s rings available today that are made from expensive, precious metals are all prone to scratches and abrasion, and some of these metals are almost impossible to remove in an emergency.
12 | YWPG 2018/19
Tungsten is one of the safest metals on the market and with its unique comfortfit design, they are not only comfortable to wear, the comfort fit acts as a cushion which helps the ring grip onto your finger. Our hand-picked selection of rings includes black-plating, ceramic and carbon fiber inlays that are fused into the metal, giving you a unique variety of tungsten rings to choose from. Our exclusive range of tungsten rings are a fraction of the price when compared to other precious metal wedding rings, but offers the same feeling of elegance and class. They are modern, bold and above all, strong!
JEWELLERY In recent seasons, modern brides have started favouring less conventional styles in engagement rings; experimenting with avant-garde settings, unique shapes and colourful gems. Alternative trends in 2018 include cuts such as pear, rose, trillion and marquise, as well as exciting options in colour, such as grey stones. Geometric looks are increasingly in vogue, particularly thinly sectioned portrait-cut diamonds, which resemble a sheet of glass. Antique and vintage rings remain popular, as do multiple or coiled bands, stacked bands, and diverse combinations of metals. For a bride-to-be who’s more traditional, classics like an eye-catching solitaire will never go out of fashion! Statement gems with simple settings hark back to a bygone era. While the halo style is still a favourite, the emphasis has moved to side details, with smaller diamonds flanking instead of encircling the centre stone. Add another dimension to a classic ring with a signature twist. Consider rotated prong placements, and rows of diamonds which twist around the band rather than sitting in a straight line, or position an oval-cut gem in an east-west, horizontal setting. Coloured diamonds remain big news, from fancy pinks and yellows, to dramatic chocolate and black diamonds. Gold is the time-honoured choice in metals, and the pink, romantic glow of rose gold has made a comeback. White gold or platinum is a very flattering setting for diamonds or sapphires, making them look even brighter, while yellow gold settings are best for emeralds, rubies and opals. Combine a white gold band with a yellow gold setting, or match prongs to the colour of the stone – rose gold for a pink gem, yellow gold for champagne-coloured diamonds. Naturalistic bridal jewellery, decorated with flower, petal, leaf or vine motifs, is a gorgeous look for necklaces and earrings as well as engagement rings and wedding bands.

VENUES Booking the wedding venue should be one of the first things on your to-do list. So how do you decide where to hold your ceremony and reception? While it was once accepted that couples would pick two separate venues, these days many opt for one venue that caters for all the wedding day events – and provides accommodation too! Much of your decision will depend on where your venue is situated as well as the type of celebration you want – its theme, logistics and ambiance. Once you have an idea of what your budget is, and the date on which you’ll be tying the knot, it’s time to start your search. There are so many options out there; whether you’re looking for a country manor, rustic barn, rooftop penthouse, tropical garden, seaside resort or grand ballroom. In 2018, there’s greater emphasis on local resources and venues, and wedding trends tend to be based on the region in which you’re getting married. Luckily for couples getting married in our beautiful province, KwaZulu-Natal has a huge variety of diverse locations with many excellent venues. Opt for an eco-friendly resort set in lush coastal forest, an upscale beachfront hotel on the coast, a grand colonial estate in the picturesque Midlands, a luxurious game lodge in ‘Big Five’ country, or a sophisticated five-star or boutique hotel in the city, not to mention one of the many locations in the awe-inspiring Drakensberg mountains range.

VENUES VENUE LOGISTICS Choosing a wedding venue starts with finding a space that you like. If only it were as simple as that! There are a host of practical considerations to keep in mind, such as the logistics of the venue, as this could save you untold hassles later on. Look at every aspect, from the number of guests the space will need to cater for, to the time of day and the season, as well as any accommodation your guests might require. You don’t need to know your exact head-count before starting to look at venues, but you should at least have a rough idea. Are you planning a relatively intimate gathering of 50 guests, the more standard size of 125 of your nearest and dearest, or a grand-scale celebration of 300-plus! The best starting point on your quest is the Internet, as web-based searches instead of phone calls and emails will save you lots of time. Many bridal sites have venue databases, and you should be able to find out most venue details online, such as the size of their banqueting facilities and the services offered. Reading reviews on TripAdvisor might also help you to narrow down the list of possibilities. If you plan on having a church wedding, the location of your reception venue will need to be in fairly close proximity to that of the ceremony. However, if you’re content with a civil wedding, this will widen your options greatly. Today many reception venues host both the wedding ceremony and the reception; a practical option which has the added benefit of minimising potential transport complications. Also think about the type of reception you’re planning. You’ll need more space for a formal, sit-down dinner than a cocktail-style affair. And don’t forget the entertainment; a band or DJ will take up lots of room, as will a dance floor! Another prime consideration is your budget. Get a price estimate, including menu and bar prices and corkage fees, and the cost of waiters and bar staff. Some venues offer discounts on accommodation as well as other services if you’re prepared to be flexible.

VENUES TYPES OF VENUES In order to decide on which venue would be most suitable for your wedding, you first need to know the style and feel that you’re aiming for. Would you prefer an elegant and sophisticated atmosphere? Something quirky and fun? A romantic, countrystyle celebration? Or something more Bohemian and edgy? Once you know what you want (or even what you don’t want) you should be able to rule out some venues immediately. The more fitting your venue is for your chosen theme, the less work you’ll have to put into decorating it, which will end up being a huge money-saver in the long run.
ERIXPIX
30 | YWPG 2018/19
Perhaps a golf or country club is just what you’re looking for. Many have beautiful buildings and grounds that are ideal for a wedding reception. Like a hotel, they’re also used to catering for large numbers of guests, particularly if you’re after buffet-style catering. Also consider a historic venue, whose architecture and décor might be just the thing for a vintage wedding. For a smaller wedding party, a restaurant could offer a sure-fire recipe for success.
It’s also important to consider whether you want a full-service venue or not. The former should be able to supply most of your needs – such as tables, chairs, linen and catering –while the latter generally only offers you the space, allowing you the freedom (and the extra work that goes along with it) to hire and coordinate all the service providers yourself.
You’re free to do things your way at a home wedding, and could save money by hiring the caterer of your choice and stocking your own bar. It can nevertheless end up being quite costly in the long run once you take all the extras into account, such as cutlery, crockery and linen, tables and chairs, and probably a tent or marquee, lighting, generators, portable toilets and flooring too. In addition, you may have to supervise the set-up of equipment, organise parking for guests, and clean up when it’s all over.
Traditional venues such as hotels and guest houses usually have set wedding packages and tend to be able to provide a classic, ballroom look as well as the convenience of in-house catering and accommodation for the bridal couple and guests. Some hotels also have both indoor and outdoor spaces, allowing for photographs to be taken in natural light and even hosting part of the reception outdoors. Choose anything from an elegant boutique hotel to an upmarket international resort or a charming country inn. However, remember that the larger hotels may host more than one wedding on the same day so there could be issues with a lack of exclusivity.
There are a number of non-traditional venues to be found, such as art galleries, barns, industrial spaces, beaches, boats, hired halls, and even a rooftop with a view! If you’d prefer something outdoors, KwaZulu-Natal has an immense variety of beautiful spots for you to pitch a tent or marquee, giving you endless flexibility regarding décor and styling. Although romantic and scenic, al fresco weddings can nevertheless be a lot of work to organise. Take into account things like the privacy of your location and competition from the elements, such as sun, heat, rain or insects. Accessibility and parking facilities should also be considered.

VENUES TIMING AND WEATHER When you’ve settled on your short list, and made sure the venues are available on your chosen day, it’s time to pay them a visit. A good tip here is to go and see the venue on the same day of the week that you’re planning to get married and, if possible, at around the same time. This way you’ll be able to notice the little details, like the quality of the light and if there are any regular goings-on and routines that might interfere in any way with the smooth running of your special day. If you have a wedding coordinator, take them along too as they will be able to cast an experienced eye over the set-up and offer good advice.
EXCLUSIVE OFFER TO WEDDING PLANNER READERS
A touch of Africa FREE chapel hire and game drive photoshoot when you book your wedding (to the value of R3 000).
Quote: TWP1 when booking. Valid until August 2019.
Also take the weather and the time of year into account when deciding on where to host your reception. Find out whether the venue is air conditioned and/or heated and, in the case of an outdoor wedding, if there’s an alternative space should it suddenly begin to rain. While Durban and the coast enjoy wonderful weather all year round, with glorious, long summer days, there is also the chance of rain and humidity during the warmer months. Conversely, the subtropical coastal areas experience warm and dry winters: even during the coldest months the average maximum temperature rises to 23°C during the day and rarely drops below 10°C at night. In the Drakensberg and KwaZulu-Natal Midlands the weather is much more temperate. Mild winter days are followed by cold nights and the possibility of snow between July and September. During summer the days are warm and generally sunny, although afternoon thundershowers are common. A bushveld wedding in Zululand or the Elephant Coast is usually more pleasant in the cooler months between May and October, with January being the wettest month as well as having an average daytime temperature of 28ºC compared with the average July temperature of 22ºC.

Calling Shots We don’t remember days, we remember moments. ANONYMOUS
64 | YWPG 2018/19
PHOTOGRAPHY Wedding photographs are a memento from one of the most beautiful days of your life. That’s why it is so important to find a photographer who will make sure that all your wedding memories are magical; not only for you, but for your children and grandchildren too. While film photography has enjoyed renewed popularity, and is a good choice for décor as well as portraits, it’s probably best to have a mixture of both digital and film for maximum versatility. Aerial photography via a drone is the perfect way to capture a birds-eye view of your big day – from the vows to the reception and the send-off. Photo booths are still very much on the scene, as they give guests a priceless memory to take away from the event and are a great way to provide interactive entertainment. This trend gets an update in 2018, where the latest thing is photo booths which allow for special filters and animated portraits. Live-streaming your ceremony and reception through a wedding app allows close relatives or friends who are unable to attend the wedding the opportunity to see the action as it happens …the next-best thing to being there in person! However, technology also has its down-side, as snap-happy guests can all too easily ruin those special wedding moments – particularly during the ceremony. While some couples are asking guests to check their
phones at the door, another option is to send a push notification 15 minutes before the ceremony that politely asks them to turn off their phones, put their cameras away, and let the professionals do their jobs. And for guests who want to take photos during the reception, now there are wedding apps which they can upload photos to. These can only be seen by invited guests, so allow for the privacy you won’t get with a hashtag. THE BIG PICTURE A knowledgeable photographer will understand how best to capture those special moments that become classic wedding shots. These might include the bride and groom exchanging rings, dancing cheek-to-cheek and cutting the cake, the toasts and speeches, the hugs, kisses and laughter of family and friends – images which will remain long after the bridal bouquet has been thrown and the wedding gown packed away. Decide from the outset whether you’d like lots of posed, formal photographs, or if you’d rather simply relax and enjoy this magical day while your photographer works in the background to record events as they unfold. Having your photographer on hand for the official ‘reveal’, the groom’s first look at his bride-to-be, is a hot trend for 2018. This concept is being carried over to other members of the wedding party, to capture the reaction of moms, dads and grandparents too.
Other important scenes might include the bride getting ready, as well as the groom and his best man, and details at the reception venue such as wedding favours, stationery, signage and flowers, food and drink, and architectural or landscape features. Bridal portrait sessions before the wedding have become popular, as have engagement shoots. There’s also been a return to the more staged/styled approach to photographs as opposed to the casual reportage-style, with the focus on creating formal group photos that look like they could have come from the pages of a fashion magazine. While the idea of stage-managing an authentic moment might seem counter-intuitive, many brides and grooms do need just a bit of guidance with regard to posing naturally and expressing themselves. When it comes to the editing of your photographs, pay attention to things like colour tones and post processing. For example, an image may be edited to add grain, decrease sharpness and contrast, and desaturate certain colours or even eliminate them completely. Consider that while trends in photographic editing may come and go, you want to be left with wedding photographs that are classic and timeless. Sticking to a more natural film-like processing means that the style of your photographs won’t look dated in years to come.

PHOTOGRAPHY CHOOSING A PHOTOGRAPHER When it comes to choosing a photographer, remember that the top ones will be booked well in advance, so do your homework, and do it in good time. Ask recently married friends for recommendations, and start browsing through websites and online galleries to get an idea of the different photographic styles, such as high fashion, intimate or informal, and determine what will suit your wedding vision. You might prefer fairly formal wedding photos, or something more natural and spontaneous ... or perhaps a combination of the two! Compile a shortlist of likely professionals, and find out if they’ll be free on your wedding day as well as whether the packages they offer are in your price range. Once you’ve done this you can meet the photographer in person to discuss the finer details before signing on the dotted line. Meeting a prospective photographer is also important if you want to get a sense of their personality. You should feel comfortable in their presence and trust that they’ll be able to do your wedding justice. ESSENTIAL QUESTIONS TO ASK YOUR PHOTOGRAPHER INCLUDE: Will you stay for a set number of hours on the day? What will you charge for overtime? Are travelling expenses included in the fee? How many pictures will you take? Will you visit the venue beforehand? Who will fill in for you if you’re sick? Do you have backup equipment? How long will we wait for our photographs? Determine what your photographer’s standard package comprises. A budget option might cover the ceremony and formal group shots with a less experienced photographer, while a more comprehensive package could include pre-wedding shots and coverage of the ceremony and reception with two photographers, as well as an album and some retouching.

CO-ORDINATORS Traditionally, the mother of the bride and chief bridesmaid are the first port of call when assistance is required. However, modern weddings tend to be quite complex affairs, in addition to which many of these erstwhile wedding helpers are very busy themselves, and may not have as much time as they’d like to take on a host of new tasks.
and plan your own countdown for the wedding as well as any pre-wedding events, while the Pocketbook accounting app assists with budget management and spending. WedBox is an easy to use photo-sharing app which collates images uploaded by friends and family. Or create a floor plan and seating chart with AllSeated; just input your venue’s dimensions, and then ‘drag ‘n drop’!
Luckily for contemporary brides, there are many different ways in which to lighten the load. Countdown calendars are useful here as they help you to pace yourself and tackle planning and décor details one at a time (see our handy guide on Page 4.
Despite having all these tools at their disposal, many brides find that nothing beats the services of a professional wedding planner. A coordinator brings with them a wealth of knowledge – what’s hot in wedding themes, who’s who in the wedding industry, where to find the ideal venue, and how to get you the best possible deals. In the end, you’ll need to weigh up how much your time is worth and whether or not you have enough knowhow to plan such an intricate event. At the very least, think about hiring a coordinator to take care of the wedding day itself, leaving you free to savour every special moment.
Technology has made it so much easier to be ultra-organised! Google Drive is an excellent tool to help you keep tabs on your wedding suppliers’ quotes, contracts and invoices, which can be organised into handy folders. What’s more, it syncs across all of your devices. Apps can also be invaluable in coordinating a wedding. Top-rated wedding apps (which are also free to download) include ‘LadyMarry’, ‘Our Wedding Planner’, ‘The Knot’, ‘Appy Couple’ and ‘Joy’.

Most will only take care of specific wedding-day issues and give you a list of their preferred service providers, so hiring your own dedicated wedding coordinator is most likely still a good idea. At the outset you might think that hiring a coordinator is simply an additional expense; however, remember that in the long run they may well be able to save you money.

Big Day Designs
DÉCOR / HIRE Décor trends in 2018 are moving towards more dramatic colours and interesting textures. The mood is energised yet laid-back, typical of free-spirited adventure and Bohemian vibes. It’s more about creating an ambiance than sticking to perfectly matched schemes and themes. The best wedding décor takes a beautiful colours, adds a winning theme – which these days can be literally anything: enchanted forest, Baroque ball or modern sophistication – and combines these broad brush strokes with personal details which express the unique personalities of the bride and groom. So by all means look to Pinterest for current trends and colour schemes, but also make sure to add those aspects that speak exclusively to you, weaving them into your décor theme as well as the menu choices, table decorations, floral accents, and more. Branding is an understated yet elegant way to put an individual stamp on your wedding, and might consist of custom-designed monograms or duograms on the tableware and stationery.
STEPHEN RAILTON
The concept of mixing two very different looks – urban and vintage – is very contemporary. The idea here is to juxtapose the delicacy and softness of the vintage theme (florals and hand-painted details, textures like lace and velvet, antique glassware and crockery, embossed stationery) with the clean lines of urban industrialism, including geometric and graphic shapes and patterns, illustrated in angular table plans, tableware and vases. This could manifest in a warehouse setting of high ceilings, bare walls and floors, done up with rich swathes of draped fabrics, dainty crockery, gleaming candelabra and romantic blooms. Alternatively, choose a garden
setting or country venue and decorate with sleek, minimalist furniture, bright colours, modern table settings and lots of metallic details. COLOUR SCHEMES Pantone’s Colour of the Year for 2018 is the dramatic, provocative and visionary deep purple shade of Ultra Violet. According to Lee Eiseman, Executive Director of the Pantone Color Institute, Ultra Violet is complex and contemplative, suggesting the mysteries of the cosmos, the intrigue of what lies ahead, and the discoveries beyond where we are now. Enigmatic purples have also long been symbolic of counterculture, unconventionality and artistic brilliance. Musical icons Prince, David Bowie and Jimi Hendrix brought shades of Ultra Violet to the forefront of western pop culture as personal expressions of individuality. Violet and purple shades look gorgeous incorporated into wedding decorations and details. Some classic combinations for Ultra Violet include pink, fuchsia, wine, red, white, lilac, deep purple, green and emerald. Consider shades of purple with black accents at a winter wedding. Purple and lilac look particularly good in floral elements and table arrangements, drapery, bridal bouquets and buttonholes, cake decorations, menu cards, and bridesmaids’ dresses.
YWPG 2018/19 | 83
DÉCOR / HIRE Metallics are still very much in evidence during 2018, but pastel shades are being replaced by bolder and more intense colours. Rich burgundy is another favourite, and black accents will start to make their presence felt. Décor themes have been given a lively injection of colour with brightly-hued table linens and drapery, flowers and even menu items. The warm glow of rose gold or copper is particularly suited to spring and summer celebrations. The combination of blush and gold is romantic, with shades of pale pink – which can be highlighted with a bolder pink for contrast – teamed with glamorous elements of rose gold. Silver sparkles enticingly against fresh lavender, lilac and grey tones. While metallics are very fashionable, try not to overdo them, and use accents to enhance your colour palette rather than making them a base colour. The ever-popular blush goes beautifully with the freshness of mint or a muted shade of green. Spring and summer weddings look smart and chic in combinations of pastel yellow and grey, as well as Niagra blue, which is one of the ‘new neutrals’. Coral is also extremely on-trend, and can be combined with mint, teal, turquoise or aqua. Autumn colour pairings include dusty blue and deep red, turquoise and chocolate brown, and dark blue with mauve. Wine red with champagne gold is a rich winter combination. Scottish brides and grooms could go with a tartan-hued palette in red, forest green, grey and black. WEDDING FAVOURS An attractively packaged wedding favour is both a key element in the reception décor and a charming way to thank your guests for sharing this special day with you. From edible gifts such as truffles, cookies and liqueurs to potted succulents and scented potpourris, this is a great method of introducing a personal touch. The trend these days is for practical rather than purely ornamental favours. Food related choices include speciality teas and coffees, homemade jams, oils and vinegars, spices and herbs. Scented candles, soaps, lip balms, flip-flops or a tote bag will also hit the spot. Alternatively, make a donation to a favourite charity in your guest’s name, and place a card at the table explaining why this particular cause is significant to you.

BRIDAL WEAR While details like the cake, the flowers and the music are all important, the bridal gown is still the central showpiece of your big day, and sets the tone for the wedding as a whole. It helps to have a general idea of what appeals to you from the outset, so first browse through Pinterest and bridal magazines to see what catches your eye. Bridal fashion inevitably incorporates a retro element, and in 2018 it’s embracing Bohemian-style designs, but with a slightly unconventional and distinctly chic edge. Think of the flares and fringes, lace bodices and leather jackets of Boho icon Stevie Nicks, given a modern makeover. Fabrics include velvet, chiffon and lace, with colour accents in burgundy. The veil is no longer an essential piece of bridal wear. Some brides wear a veil pulled back from their face, and many others ditch it altogether. In 2018, capes are hotter than ever, and go well with both contemporary and vintagestyle attire. Make a bold statement with a full-length cape (beautifully embellished with beads and pearls, or sheer, sleek and simple) or a short cape-let made out of lace. Trains are very traditional, and can turn a simple dress into something truly show-stopping. Just look at the latest royal wedding! Other bridal-wear trends that are big right now include a focus on backs, from elegant scoops to dramatic dips. Sleeves are also in the spotlight, with particular varieties including bell, flutter and caps. Black and white colour schemes add an exciting monochromatic twist in 2018, with details like black bows, belts, ribbons and jewellery, as well as oversized ebony flowers. Popular looks for bridesmaids include mismatched, twopiece outfits, florals and textured fabrics, versatile wrap dresses, and even some casual options like pantsuits. Rich,

jewel-toned colours are incredibly flattering, and complement current trends. CHOOSING A BRIDAL GOWN First off, determine how much you have to spend so as not to waste time trying on dresses that are out of your price range. Things to bear in mind include the season and time of day you’re getting married, the ceremony and reception venues, and styles that flatter your figure. Begin the search early, especially if you’re not buying off the peg, as getting a gown custom-made by a designer can take around six to eight months, and even alterations to a ready-made dress can take a month or two. When you begin visiting bridal stores, keep an open mind and listen to the consultant’s advice. Although an outfit may have no ‘hanger appeal’, it could look very different when you try it on. You might like one that draws attention to your best feature (for example, your shoulders, arms or waist) while de-emphasising those aspects that you find less desirable. Don’t leave shopping to a busy weekend. Rather get a morning off work to take advantage of a quieter store and more of the salesperson’s time. It’s preferable not to bring too many people with you as all the opinions may well end up distracting and confusing you. It’s also wise to be realistic. Buy the dress that fits you comfortably now, not something that will only be right once you shed that last five kilograms you’ve been aiming to lose for the past two years! Think you’ve found the one? Those in the know suggest taking photographs of the dresses you try on; not just from the front, but from a variety of angles to get the total effect. Also look at how the fabric appears in photographs: some fabrics, while appearing gorgeous to the naked eye, may look a lot different in your wedding album. SPOSABELLA

HAIR & BEAUTY Wedding make-up and hairstyles are meant to complement your wedding dress and your overall theme, enhancing your natural beauty and letting your individuality shine through. Whether you’re hiring a professional to do your wedding make-up or taking on the task yourself, it’s a good idea to have photographs for reference. New trends being seen in bridal make-up in 2018 include metallic accents in silver and gold on eyes, cheeks or nails and berry-red, hot pink or glossy nude lips. Rose gold, shades of pink and pastel pink, are a popular. The brown colour palette is also contemporary, with matte brown eye-shadow and liner enhancing the eyes. If you’ve decided to do your own make-up, here are a few tricks of the trade. Apply products in natural light if possible, and remember to blend your foundation and blusher well, as the camera will show up any lines. Don’t use foundation too near your gown’s neckline as it could end up staining the dress. Opt for waterproof mascara.

CAKES / CATERING CHOOSING A CATERER Start looking for a caterer at least nine months prior to your wedding. Ask whether your venue has a list of preferred suppliers who’s available on your chosen date. Look at their portfolio and find out whether they have adequate facilities and are backed by a professional team. If you’re using in-house catering, the typical choices are either a buffet or a plated meal. Hiring an independent caterer tends to give you greater flexibility. Authentic touches, such as locally-sourced and organic produce, regional specialities, or dishes based on treasured family recipes, are something your guests are bound to remember. Local flavour isn’t just about the food but the drinks too, from craft beers to boutique gins and wine. Pairing food with beverages is a nice touch. Think oysters and champagne, chicken sliders with beer, tacos and margaritas, smoked salmon and vodka, or prawn cocktails with berry-infused gin. Look for menus that work well with the season; for example, light, fresh dishes in spring and summer, and heartier, meals in autumn and winter. THE WEDDING CAKE The latest flavours in wedding cakes include the likes of passion fruit, dark chocolate and orange, cookies and cream, and coffee and liqueur. There’s greater emphasis on cake icing and décor, and the white wedding cake has become a canvas for personalised, hand-painted designs. Metallic colours such as rose gold and copper – so fashionable in current décor looks – are also coming out clear favourites. Black accents are very elegant too and floral motifs with organic floral designs comprising climbing vines and flowers. Vintage jewellery provides another interesting decorative element.

TRANSPORT
Arrive in Style
The journey is the destination. DAN ELDON
ERIXPIX
While the limousine may be the classic form of wedding transportation, brides and grooms are encouraged to get a little creative and add a fun element to their big day.
Helicopter flights and charters around the Drakensberg Mountains
Particular themes lend themselves to specific types of transport. For example, arrive on a tractor or horse-drawn cart at a rustic reception, in a Ford Thunderbird at a 1950s wedding, a vintage car at a Roaring 20s Gatsby-style celebration, or with a rugged Range Rover or Jeep for an out-of-Africa scenario. Embrace your inner princess by travelling like royalty in a magnificent Rolls-Royce, or go for something a bit quirky with a VW Beetle, Vespa scooter or tandem bicycle. At a lake or seaside celebration, you could make a grand entrance by speedboat or yacht, or choose a more casual option like a canoe, paddleboard or rowing boat. A flatbed truck or bakkie decorated with ribbons and fairy lights would be fun and informal. The top tip for fool-proof wedding day transport is to map out every detail of your schedule well in advance. Think about where your hair and make-up are being done, the venue for pre and post-ceremony photo shoots, and the distance to the reception site, estimating how much time you’ll need for each event. Factor a little leeway into your timeline to make room for any possible speed bumps or detours (both literal and metaphorical!) along the way. Book transport several months beforehand, and have vehicles checked to ensure a smooth and stress-free drive on the day. Remember to include bridesmaids, groomsmen and the bride’s parents when calculating how many vehicles you’ll need.

HONEYMOONS
Experience Africa…
The honeymoon is the trip of a lifetime for most newlyweds, mainly because it’s the first time you’ll have to enjoy each other’s company when all the wedding-day planning and stress is behind you, and will leave you with memories that will last a lifetime. Whether you love excitement or leisure, golden beaches or snow-scapes, remember that your chosen destination should, above all, allow you a chance to unwind and spend some quality time with your spouse. What suits your style as a couple? Which destinations are on your bucket list? Consider things you both enjoy (such as nature, food, art and culture, sports or adventure), what your getaway goals are (relaxing, indulging, exploring, or a little bit of each), your favourite type of setting (rural or urban, beach or mountain, tropical or alpine), and the best time of year to visit your dream destination. Remember that while travelling off-season can save you money, it may not be worth it if you have to put up with unpredictable weather.
Nambiti Plains Lodge is a Five Star Eco Lodge, situated within the smouldering beauty of a scenic landscape of the Nambiti Game Reserve, KwaZulu-Natal.
If you’re choosing an exotic location, make sure it’s not too remote; unless you have loads of time on your hands and don’t mind long-haul flights. After you’ve factored all the travelling time into the equation, not to mention the associated jet lag, it might well be better to choose some place closer to home. Your budget is another important issue. Does it allow for a multi-destination European tour, a weekend at a resort on the South Coast, or somewhere in between? If strapped for cash or time, why not take a ‘mini-moon’ and save up for a real honeymoon later on? When booking a destination do let them know that you’re going to be travelling as newlyweds. There are lots of resorts offering budget deals, upgrades and other extras to honeymoon couples. HONEYMOON LOCATIONS The ultimate international honeymoon destinations for 2018, according to Harper’s Bazaar, include Oahu (Hawaii), Aysen (Patagonia), Ireland, the Maldives, Thailand, Austria, Siena (Italy), Zambia and Cambodia. In addition to the unspoilt wildlife attractions of Zambia, Botswana and Mauritius also continue to rank among the world’s favourite destinations for romance.
Tranquil destination for Honeymoon Couples. Private drives, sunset picnics, romantic dinners for two. African Romance Package for Honeymoon couples. Honeymoon couples staying 4 nights will enjoy a fresh fruit basket on arrival, a private moon-lit dinner, romantic turndowns, scented bath, champagne on ice and chocolates for two.
There are stunning locations here in KwaZulu-Natal too; such as a mountain retreat in the Drakensberg, a beach holiday at Kosi Bay or a bush break at one of the Elephant Coast’s world-class game reserves. Consider looking for eco-tourism destinations which promote responsible travel that safeguards the environment while improving the wellbeing of indigenous populations. You’ll find a comprehensive list of resources, from participating organisations to top eco-destinations, on the website of the International Ecotourism Society: www.ecotourism.org. South Africa is a popular and affordable destination for overseas couples as well, with many international travel and tourism agents offering romantic honeymoon packages to our magnificent wilderness areas. This might include a safari expedition in the Kruger National Park, an urban adventure in the cosmopolitan city of Cape Town, or a winelands experience around Franschhoek and Stellenbosch.

An all-inclusive holiday is a great idea. If you’ve already paid for everything upfront you’ll be able to relax without having to worry about the price of everything. Just be sure to check what’s included; for example, local beverages might be part of the deal, but not imported drinks such as wine. Unless you’ve specifically asked for cash donations as an alternative to items on the wedding registry, don’t count on receiving monetary contributions towards your honeymoon. If you do, let those amounts rather pay for an extra excursion or dinner in a five-star restaurant. TRAVEL ADVICE Those in the know suggest using a travel agent. Having someone else to take care of all the booking arrangements will give you less to worry about in the days
HONEYMOONS leading up to the wedding. In addition, if anything does end up going wrong, you’ll have someone to call. If you’re travelling outside the country, check that your passport is up-to-date and organise visas, if required, and travel insurance. Many countries now require passports to be valid for six months from the date of entry. If you’re traveling to an exotic destination, it’s best to find out from your doctor whether vaccinations will be required. Sort out your foreign exchange needs, such as credit cards, prepaid travel cards and cash. Prior to departure, be sure to put your mobile phone on international roaming (limiting this to text messages is more affordable), pack an overseas adaptor, and don’t forget the chargers for your phone and camera. Put nametags on all items of luggage, and don’t leave home without your e-ticket and itinerary. Make photocopies of all cards and travel documents, vaccination certificates, prescriptions, medical aid cards and medical or trip insurance documents. In addition, leave contact numbers and copies of your itinerary, wills and life insurance documents with a friend or relative. Alternatively, you could store copies of documents on your smartphone, or upload to Google Drive and access them from anywhere in the world. Even if you’ve booked an all-inclusive vacation, covering accommodation, all meals, drinks, activities and transfers, take more money with you than you think you’ll need. There’s nothing worse than wanting to book a special tour or spa treatment only to discover your credit card has reached its limit or you’ve run out of cash. It’s better not to book an early departure if you’re leaving the morning after the wedding. If there’s absolutely no alternative, then try to pack your suitcase a few days before you leave. Once you’ve made sure that you have essentials such as passports, currency, cameras, phones and medication safely stowed away, don’t stress too much about forgetting one or two items … most destinations will be able to provide you with basics such as toothbrushes and suntan lotion!

NAMBITI PLAINS PRIVATE GAME LODGE
EXPERIENCE AFRICA
112 | YWPG 2018/19
HONEYMOONS
NAMBITI PLAINS PRIVATE GAME LODGE is situated in the beautiful and diverse landscape of Nambiti Private Game Reserve, just east of Ladysmith in close proximity to the Drakensberg and within fairly easy driving distance of both Johannesburg and Durban. The area around Nambiti has a firm footing in South African history with several battles of the Anglo-Zulu and Anglo-Boer wars taking place in this vicinity – in fact many of these battlefields have been preserved as reminders of the rich history. One of the most attractive elements about Nambiti Game Reserve is the spectacular and diverse scenic landscapes! This reserve’s 13 000 hectares of malaria-free bushveld boasts everything from massive grassy plains reminiscent of the Serengeti, through thornveld covered hillsides to the Sundays River which tumbles over a series of waterfalls as it makes its way through the reserve. Nambiti Plains is an eco-friendly Lodge which consists of 7 Private Thatched Luxurious Suites; two sets of which can be booked as family suites (accommodate 4 people.) The Suites utilized as family units consist of one building, a common entrance leading to two separate and private rooms; a solid packed stone wall divides the two rooms. All suites have private verandas fitted with a table and two chairs as well as two sun loungers. Each suite come as an XL King but can also be accommodated as 2 3/4 size twin beds. Unlike many of the other lodges which are based either in the far south or north of the reserve, Nambiti Plains is located pretty much in the middle of the reserve. The Lodge’s location gives it one significant advantage in that you’re already in the heart of the reserve’s prime game viewing areas! The Lodge is set on a gentle slope with views out over the rolling plains of Nambiti with a
nearby waterhole. Each suite is completely secluded and hugely spacious and comes equipped with romantic mosquito nets and overhead fans. Whilst the style is quite rustic with open thatched roofs with exposed ceiling beams, stone-packed feature walls and screeded floors, it’s all quite luxurious too. You can immerse yourself with 180 degree panoramic views from the stone bath, outdoor “bush shower” (Honeymoon Suites only), and private wrap around viewing deck. The Honeymoon suites have massive open plan bathrooms where twin basins are framed by old tree trunks and there’s a gorgeous standalone stone bath which could almost feel outside once you slide back the huge floor-toceiling sliding doors! The luxury suites are two separate rooms joint by an inter-leading foyer and separated by a solid, packed stone wall. This is perfect for families as it offers families space to enjoy the beautiful views of the bush, but being near one another. The main lodge follows a traditional game lodge design style with its thatched roofs and wooden viewing deck – the stone-packed feature walls are particularly attractive. The Lodge’s emphasis is on a modern yet eco-friendly minimalist approach with the Lodge also located right in the bush with no manicured gardens, thereby reducing the impact on the surrounding environment. The Lodge has glassed sliding doors, overhead fans and screened floors which ensure you stay cool in summer while large, beautifully constructed packed stone fire places in the lounge and dining room keep you warm in winter. During the day, the place to be is the vast, expansive wrap-around deck complete with circular plunge pool - this is the ideal area to relax with an ice-cold beer or chill out in the outdoor lounge as you watch animals quietly drinking and bathing in the waterhole in front of the lodge.
Nambiti Plains is certainly not the place to come to lose weight and dining is an experience to be enjoyed either in the privacy of your deck, dining room, under the African sky in the atmospheric boma around a blazing bonfire or in the bush for a truly African experience. LEGAL Along with finding a venue for the reception, one of your first priorities will be to decide where you will be saying your vows, as marriage officers need to be consulted and places of worship booked well in advance. While perhaps not as exciting as choosing the décor or the wedding dress, the legal aspects of your union also need to be attended to before you say ‘I do’. Consult a lawyer to ensure that your marriage contract caters for your specific circumstances, as it will have far reaching practical and financial implications for both of you going forward. GETTING MARRIED IN SOUTH AFRICA To get married in South Africa you will need a valid ID book, passport, or an affidavit attesting to your identity if the original document has been lost or stolen. If either partner is a minor, they will also need the written consent of their parents, legal guardians or the Commissioner of Child Welfare. If you’ve been married before, then a final decree of divorce is necessary, and if you’re a widow or widower, the death certificate of your spouse must be produced. You will also need clear copies of your two witnesses’ IDs or passports.
minister of religion, magistrate, special justice of the peace, and commissioner of oaths, are allowed to conduct a marriage ceremony. Ceremonies today can be either secular or religious, and while the latter vary substantially between different cultures, most have common elements such as the offering of rings, flowers or some other symbolic item, and the exchange of vows in front of a religious or community leader. Most religions, including Judaism, Islam and Hinduism, see marriage as a sacred duty and an important facet of spiritual life. The convention of the ‘white wedding’, which is common to both Christians and Jews, has been adopted by many Zulu and Xhosa couples, who may hold a Western wedding service in addition to traditional rituals which honour the ancestors. Customary Zulu marriage proposal are accompanied by ‘lobola’ or ‘bride price’, which refers to payment made by the groom’s family to the bride’s family. In times gone by, lobola took the form of cattle. Today cash is usually considered acceptable. The wedding reception takes place over several days and involves the wider community in a celebration of feasting, dancing and singing.
Overseas brides and grooms wishing to marry in South Africa should be aware of a few simple legalities, with information about the various acts available on the website of the Department of Home Affairs: www.home-affairs.gov.za. Foreigners will need copies of their passports, three colour passport photos each, and letter of non-impediment from their embassy. They also need to fill in a ‘Declaration for the Purpose of Marriage’ (Form BI-31) in the presence of the marriage officer, and produce copies of divorce decrees or death certificates where necessary.
With interfaith marriages on the increase, many couples choose to have two separate wedding ceremonies, or opt to hold a service that reflects their respective heritages. Civil ceremonies allow couples increased flexibility regarding the type and location of their ceremony, as well as considerable freedom with their vows. This may be the perfect choice for a bride and groom who come from differing religious backgrounds or for a couple with no religious affiliations.
While your marriage officer will automatically issue you with an original abridged marriage certificate after the ceremony, some countries require an unabridged certificate to register the marriage once you return home. When the marriage officer registers your marriage with the Department of Home Affairs, they will apply for your unabridged marriage certificate, which can take anything from two to eight weeks to obtain.
In South Africa there are three laws under which couples may choose to be married. These include the Marriage Act (Act 25 of 1961), the Customary Marriages Act (Act 120 of 1998), and the Civil Union Act (Act 17 of 2006). The Customary Marriages Act provides for the civil registration of marriages solemnised according to tribal custom. Same-sex marriages are permitted under the Civil Union Act, with partners given the choice of having their union called a
THE MARRIAGE CEREMONY According to the South African Marriage Act, the ceremony must take place indoors in a church or other building used for religious services, a public office (like a magistrate’s court) or a private dwelling. Further, it should take place in the presence of at least two witnesses, and the entrance to the venue must be open. Only marriage officers, such as a
‘civil partnership’ or a ‘marriage partnership’ and enjoying the same legal and material benefits and responsibilities as couples married under the Marriage Act. Couples should visit an attorney at least three months before the wedding to find out about the different marriage contract options. A Notary Public is an attorney who is specially qualified to execute notarial contracts such as these and can advise couples regarding the contract that best suits their situation. Other important documents such as wills and insurance policies also need to be dealt with. It’s essential that you have an ante-nuptial contract (ANC) drawn up before the wedding to clarify the legal and financial aspects of your union. In Community of Property: This system applies if you do not enter into a specific ANC before marriage. All assets and liabilities, whether acquired before or after marriage, are shared equally. It can be problematic if one partner gets into debt, as the other will be held equally responsible for the amount owed. Furthermore, neither partner is allowed to sell an asset without the other partner’s written consent. Out of Community of Property: If the ANC is ‘Without Accrual’, each partner retains separate ownership of all assets and debts brought into and acquired during the marriage. This can be unfair as non-monetary contributions, such as looking after the home, are not acknowledged. Contracts ‘With Accrual’ take into account both monetary and nonmonetary contributions made during the marriage, while protecting each partner from the liabilities of the other. Assets acquired before marriage are excluded.
