What’s Inside? Hello and welcome to our Autumn / Winter 2008 – 09 season for children. At the Lyric we’ve got magical Christmas shows with ice and light, a horsey half-term and Saturday shows packed with live music and interactivity. Where else can you go on colourful adventures with music and mayhem when you’re 2 – 7 years old?

Little Hippo & His Magic Pen Created by Tam Tam Theatre

Little Hippo received lots of presents for his birthday. His favourite present was from Daddy Hippo — a special red pen with some beautiful things inside it. But Little Hippo needs your help to get them out! This interactive version of the popular tale told in english and french, includes the chance to have a go with Little Hippo’s magic pen. Created by Stuff and Nonsense Theatre Company Making bread is hard work — it would be a lot easier for Little Red Hen if the lazy farmyard animals got off their reclining sofas and lent a hand. A delightfully barmy show featuring puppets, live music and bread-making and lots and lots of laughter. Featuring British Sign Language. Ages 3+

The Sorcerer’s Apprentice

Teapot

The Sorcerer’s Apprentice feels a tingling in his fingertips… can he work a spell himself? He snaps his fingers and an old broom starts to take on a life of its own. But will he be able to undo the spell before the Sorcerer returns?

There’s something special about this old teapot. Put your ear to it. You can hear secrets that nobody else knows… Why did Blinky the cat want to jump over the moon? Where did Jack find his Mum’s recipe for success? And who buried the teapot in the turnip patch?

Tangles? Split ends? Poor Rapunzel is having a bad hair day! Taking the traditional tale right back to its roots, this enchanting show promises plenty of volume and loads of highlights! With innovative puppets and an original soundtrack. Ages 4+

Old Mother Hubbard went to the cupboard to fetch her poor dog a bone, but when she got there, the cupboard was bare… Or was it? Come on a nursery rhyme journey with glove puppets, clowning and a feast of musical treats. Ages 3+

Rapunzel and the Tower of Doom

Based on the all-time favourite story Little Red Riding Hood, follow a magical path through the woods for a memorable journey with puppetry, colour and specially composed music. Listen to the song of the red box, watch a forest grow before your very eyes and find out how an endearing bear gets in on the action! Ages 3+

When you’re a little pig, it’s a dangerous world out there — the sooner you find out who you can trust, the better… With an array of puppets, music and dance, Krazy Kat continue to astonish and amuse — there’s more than one twist to this version of an old tale! The Steadfast Tin Soldier tumbles from a window ledge and begins an adventure into the unknown… A charming adaptation of the traditional tale by Hans Christian Andersen told with puppetry, music and storytelling. Ages 3+

Brave George is a simple country lad who finds himself taking on the fiery dragon (who likes to eat monks, knights, sheep and princesses!) to win the hand of the princess — but will he be bold enough to fight? Full of puppetry, masks and live music. Ages 5+

Set in an old Russian fair, Krazy Kat Theatre tell the story of a mysterious travelling showman and his magical puppets that come alive — and Petrushka is the most unruly puppet of all. Packed with 15 puppets, mime, dance, song, sign language and lots of laughs, don’t miss this new show from the creators of Clownderella. Ages 3+

What happens when you’re a horse and your owner is more interested in watching the telly than taking you out for a ride? When the remote control is unexpectedly dropped within hoofreach, a lonely horse’s life suddenly takes a new tack — she realises she’s not just a dumb animal and starts a quest for a herd, humour and a life without shoes… Having boldly taken Muttnik the Dog into space last season, Niki McCretton returns with tap dancing hooves and nostalgic TV clips of Black Beauty and Champion the Wonder Horse.

BUT… Cinderella won’t be going to the Ball — unless she finishes the impossible tasks her sisters have set her. Maybe her friends from the forest can help? Inspired by the original Brothers Grimm tale, the Lyric will be transformed into a spine-tingling winter wonderland, making the spellbinding Cinderella the only show for the whole family to see this Christmas. 14
