Einleitung

Die Stadt und ihre Gebäude sind seit je her steter Transformation unterworfen. Der Reichtum und die Dichte an Substanz und Geschichte ist ver- gleichbar mit den Ablagerungen geologischer Schichten. Je älter die Stadt, je komplexer das Gefüge von Material und Zeit. Diesen kontinuierlichem Wandel im Stadtgefüge versteht der Fokus Architektur & Struktur unter dem Begriff «Upcycled City». Im Gegensatz zum Downcycling kommt es bei dieser Form des Recyclings zu einer stofflichen Aufwertung. Der Forschungsraum ist das Quartier Molino Nuovo nördlich der Altstadt von Lugano. Hier entwerfen die Studierenden ihre Strategie für eine städtebauliche Aufwertung des Quartiers, das heute eine klare Struktur und Vision vermissen lässt. Es stellen sich folgende Fragen: Wie kann die bestehende Stadtstruktur im Sinne der Upcycled City aufgewertet werden? Wie kann der Freiraum (und nicht die Gebäude) zum Protagonisten der Stadtentwicklung werden? Welche Regeln sollen gelten, und welche Instrumente stehen für die Transformation zur Verfügung?

Das Forschungsprojekt „The Culture of Water“, das im Herbstsemester 2018 in Zusammenarbeit mit dem Kyoto Institute of Technology (KIT) gestartet wurde, wird im Herbstsemester 2020 im Fokus Architektur & Energie weitergeführt. Das Hauptziel der fünfjährigen Studie ist die Erforschung der Architektur, der Lebens- und Landschaftsbedingungen um den Vierwaldstättersee und um den nordöstlich von Kyoto gelegenen BiwaSee, dem grössten Süsswassersee Japans.

Der Fokus Architektur & Energie nimmt dabei das Begriffspaar ‚Wasser und Schönheit‘ vom FS20 auf. Neuer Ort dieser Auseinandersetzung wird der Süden des Biwa-Sees sein, bei der die ‚Acht Ansichten von Ōmi‘ die Ausgangslage für die Erforschung des japanischen Schönheitsbegriffes bildet. Diese in zahlreichen künstlerischen Darstellungen überhöhten acht Orte bilden gleichzetig die acht „Strips“ am Biwa-See, die die Studierenden bearbeiten. Die Aufgabe fordert eine Beschäftigung mit dem Ort als reales und imaginiertes Territorium im Zeitenwandel. Dabei stellt sich der Fokus folgenden zentralen Fragen: Welche Bedeutung hat die Vergänglichkeit und Wandelbarkeit von Natur, Wasser, und (Jahres-) Zeiten in der japanischen Ästhetik? Können wir diese natürlichen Bedingungen als Energie des Ortes begreifen und diese unserer Architektur einschreiben?

Und was bedeutet Schönheit in der Architektur in Japan, was bedeutet sie in der Schweiz?

Für den Fokus Architektur & Material bietet sich, auch wegen der Corona-Situation, die erstmalige Chance ein Setting mit geradezu idealem Ateliercharakter in Glarus Süd betreiben zu können. Als ‚Alpine Ateliers Glarus ‘ bezieht der Fokus im Herbst- und kommenden Frühlingsemester das Haus der Direktion auf dem Legler Areal in Diesbach. Nicht unweit vom Atelier liegt das Hefti Areal, ebenfalls früherer Standort einer wichtigen Textilfabrik und Standort der Aufgabe für das HS20. Hier inmitten einer imposanten Bergwelt erarbeiten die Studierenden Szenarien, die für das Hefti Areal und der Umgebung eine touristische Nutzung erlauben.

Der Fokus wagt sich dem schwiegen Unterfangen an, die Qualitäten des strukturschwachen Glarus Süd zu bewahren und gleichzeitig zu entwickeln. ‚Authentischer Tourismus‘ - die Architektur als Erweiterung oder Verstärkung landschaftlicher Eigenheiten zu verstehen - diesem Paradoxon nimmt sich der Fokus an und beginnt beim Bild der Landschaft.

Untersucht werden im Semester Bauten, die sich mit dem Verhältnis von Behausung und Landschaft exemplarisch auseinandersetzen.

Zusätzlich zu diesen drei Projektmodulen, von denen die Studierenden eines auswählen, werden fünf umfangreiche Module im Regelsemester entlang des Berufsbildes angeboten. Sie bedingen notwendige Vertiefungen in die eigentliche Materie und fragen verschiedene Kompetenzen zwischen fachlichen, methodischen und sozialen Fähigkeiten ab. Ein interdisziplinäres Lehrteam führt durch die unterschiedlichen Module.

Introduction

The city and its buildings have always been subject to constant transformation. The wealth and density of the building fabric and history can be compared to the strata of geological deposits. The older the city, the more complex the framework of material and time. The Focus Architecture & Structure understands this continuous change and upgrading of the urban fabric by the term ‘Upcycled City’. In contrast, to downcycling, this form of recycling improves the value of materials. The area of research is the Molino Nuovo quarter north of the old town of Lugano. Here, the students design their vision for an urban enhancement of the Quartier Nuovo, which today lacks a clear urban development vision. During the semester the focus will raise the following questions: How can the existing urban structure be improved in the sense of the Upcycled City? How can open (rather than buildings) become the protagonist in urban development?

What rules should apply, and what instruments are available for the transformation?

The research project ‘The Culture of Water’, which began jointly with the Kyoto Institute of Technology (KIT) in the autumn semester of 2018, will be continued in Focus: Architecture & Energy in the autumn semester of 2020. The main focus of the five-year study is to study the architecture and the conditions of living and the landscape around Lake Lucerne and Lake Biwa, located northeast of Kyoto, the largest freshwater lake in Japan.

The Focus Architecture & Energy will address the pair of terms ‘water and beauty’. The new venue of this study will be southern Lake Biwa, where ‘The Eight Views of Ōmi’ will be the starting point for research into the Japanese concept of beauty. These eight places, highlighted in numerous artistic works, represent our eight sites of design interventions on Lake Biwa and challenge us to reflect on the real and imagined territories throughout the transformation of time. Further the focus addresses the following central questions: What is the meaning of nature, water, times (of the year) and transience for Japanese aesthetics? Can we understand these natural conditions as the „energy of place“ and inscribe them in our architecture? What does beauty in architecture mean in Japan, and what does it mean in Switzerland?

For the Focus Architecture & Material, the coronavirus situation offers the first opportunity to operate a setting with an almost ideal studio character. As ‘Glarus Alpine Ateliers HSLU’, the focus will occupy in the autumn and coming spring semester the administration building on the Legler-Areal in Diesbach. Not far from the studio is the Hefti-Areal, which was previously the location of an important textile factory and will be the project location in the autumn semester 2020. In the middle of a world of impressive mountains, the students will work out scenarios that allow the Hefti area and the town to be used for tourism. The focus is on the silent endeavour to preserve and at the same time develop the qualities of structurally weak Glarus South. ‘Authentic tourism’ – to understand architecture as an extension or reinforcement of landscape characteristics – this focus takes on this paradox and starts with the image of the landscape.

During the semester students will study buildings that engage in exemplary ways with the relationship of housing and landscape.

In addition to these three project modules, of which students select one, five extensive modules are offered during the regular semester that trace the picture of the architectural profession. They require more intense work on specific topics and call for the application of knowledge, methodological and social skills. An interdisciplinary team of lecturers guides the students through the various modules.

Rafael Moneo beschreibt in seinem Essay, dass die Architektur anders altert als etwa ein Gemälde, das zwar mit dem Alter Patina ansetzt, aber in seiner Substanz unverändert bleibt. Der Dioklesianspalast von Spalato aus dem vierten Jahrhundert nach Christus wurde im Mittelalter von der Stadt und ihren Einwohnern annektiert, genauso wie das römische Amphitheater von Lucca. Neapel wurde in ihrer Geschichte so oft überbaut, dass die römischen Ruinen nur tief unter der Erde, auf dem Gang durch die Katakomben sichtbar werden.

Die ursprünglichen Strukturen haben diese grundlegenden Transformationen überlebt und sind heute immer noch lesbar. Die Überlagerung der Schichten der Architektur macht die die Faszination dieser Strukturen aus.

Im Barock wurden repräsentative urbane Räume wie Plätze und Strassenachsen mit der bestehenden Stadtstruktur überlagert, wobei der Bestand der neuen Konzeption des Stadtraumes weichen musste und nur noch gedanklich rekonstruiert werden kann. Als repräsentative Beispiele können die Plaza Mayor in Madrid oder die städtischen Achsen von Turin genannt werden.

In jüngerer Zeit starteten europäische Städte wie Barcelona wegweisende Programme zur Aufwertung öffentlicher Räume in bestehenden Vierteln.

Der Meatpacking District in New York durch die Highline, eine von Diller Scofidio + Renfo in einen linearen Park umgenutzte, obsolet gewordene Infrastruktur, zu einem lebendigen, durchmischten Quartier aufgewertet.

Industriequartiere werden weltweit in vielfältig genutzte Stadtquartiere umgestaltet, so auch in den französischen Städten Lyon, Bordeaux und Nantes.

Am anderen Ende des Spektrums gibt es kleinmassstäbliche Strategien.

Ein Beispiel von «urban acupuncture» ist das Forschungsprojekt pet architecture von Atelier Bow-Wow, das sich mit städtischen Nischen und micro-buildings in Tokyo befasst, sowie zahlreiche partizipative Projekte, von pop-up Räume zur kollektiven Nutzung bis hin zur urban farming, die von Gemeinschaften oder Architekturkollektiven initiiert werden.

Aber auch Künstler setzen sich mit urbanen Strukturen auseinander, so beschäftigte sich Gordon Matta-Clark 1973 und 1974 in seinem Projekt «Reality properties – fake estates» mit Fragen zur Parzellierung, unbebaubaren Grundstücken und Resträumen.

All dies, und vieles mehr verstehen wir unter dem Begriff «upcycled City».

The city and its buildings, by contrast, have since time immemorial been transformed, built over and restructured. The wealth and density of the building fabric and history can be compared to the strata of geological deposits. The older the city, the more complex the framework of material and time.

Diocletian’s Palace in Split from the fourth century AD was annexed by the city and its residents in the Middle Ages, as was the Roman amphitheatre of Lucca. Over the course of its history, Naples was been built over so many times that the Roman ruins become visible only well underground, when walking through the catacombs. The original structures have

survived these fundamental transformations are as still legible today.

The overlapping of architecture layers is what makes these structures fascinating.

In the Baroque era, stately urban spaces such as squares and street axes were superimposed by the existing urban structure, so that the existing fabric had to give way to the new conception of urban space and can only be reconstructed in the imagination. One could mention as representative examples the Plaza Mayor in Madrid and the urban axes of Turin.

More recently, European cities such as Barcelona have launched pioneering programmes to improve public spaces in existing neighbourhoods.

In the Meatpacking District in New York, infrastructure that had become obsolete was transformed by the High Line, a linear park designed by Diller Scofidio + Renfo, into a multi-use urban neighbourhood, as has also been done in the French cities Lyon, Bordeaux and Nantes.

On the other end of the spectrum are small-scale strategies. One example of ‘urban acupuncture’ is the pet architecture research project of Atelier Bow-Wow, which concerns urban niches and micro-buildings in Tokyo, as well as numerous participatory projects ranging from pop-up spaces for collective use to urban faming that have been initiated by communities or architects’ collectives.

Artists, too, grapple with urban structures; for example, in his project Reality Properties: Fake Estates from1973 - 1974, Gordon Matta-Clark addressed questions of parcelling, undevelopable lots and leftover spaces.

All this, and much more, is part of what we mean by the term ‘Upcycled City’.

Upcycling Der Begriff Upcycling wurde ursprünglich im Kontext von Material und Rohstoffen verwendet. Wir wenden ihn nun im Bereich von urbanen Strukturen an.

Beim Upcycling (englisch up „nach oben“ und recycling „Wiederverwertung“) werden Abfallprodukte oder (scheinbar) nutzlose Stoffe in neuwertige Produkte umgewandelt. Im Gegensatz zum Downcycling kommt es bei dieser Form des Recyclings zu einer stofflichen Aufwertung. Die Wiederverwertung oder Nachnutzung von bereits vorhandenem Material reduziert die Verwendung von Rohstoffen.

Eine frühe Erwähnung fand der Begriff 1994 in einem Artikel in der britischen Zeitschrift Salvo, in dem der Ingenieur Reiner Pilz von der Burgdorfer Pilz GmbH mit seiner Kritik an der Abfallrahmenrichtlinie und der Praxis beim Baustoffrecycling zitiert wird:

«‘Recycling’, sagte er, ‘ich nenne es Down-cycling. Sie schlagen Steine kaputt, sie schlagen alles kaputt. Was wir brauchen, ist Up-cycling, bei dem alte Produkte einen höheren Wert erhalten, keinen geringen.’» 2 The concept of upcycling was originally used in the context of resources and raw materials. Now we are applying it to urban structures.

Upcycling is the process of transformation waste products and (seemingly) useless materials into new products. In contrast, to downcycling, this form of recycling improves the value of materials. The re-use or post-use of existing materials reduces the use of raw materials.

One early use of the term is found in an article in the in the British magazine Salvo in 1994, in which the engineer Reiner Pilz of Pilz GmbH in Burgdorf is cited criticising waste directives and practices for recycling construction materials:

«‘Recycling’, he said, ‘I call it down-cycling. They smash bricks, they smash everything. What we need is up-cycling where old products are given more value, not less.’» 2

Lugano «To understand history is essential for the formation of the architect, since he must be able to insert his own work into the ‘preesistenze ambientali’ and to take it dialectically into account.» 3 Lugano, die wirtschaftliche Lokomotive des Kantons Tessin, tut sich schwer mit ihrer städtebaulichen Entwicklung. Über verschiedene Stufen von Gemeindefusionen ist Lugano in den letzten Jahrzehnten unter die Top Ten der Schweizer Städte aufgestiegen, und nähert sich von der Einwohnerzahl her St.Gallen und Luzern.

Lugano fehlt es jedoch an städtischer Dichte und entsprechend an Urbanität.

Die urbane Kultur ist wenig entwickelt. Die Altstadt entstand im Mittelalter, wurde aber im 19. Jahrhundert nicht durch die für europäische Städte typische Blockrandstruktur ergänzt und weiterentwickelt. Die Industrialisierung ging weit-

gehend am Tessin vorbei, und das entsprechende Bevölkerungswachstum blieb aus. An Stelle der dichten und raumbildenden Stadt des 19. Jahrhunderts wurden rund um die Altstadt freistehende Villen gebaut, die dem Druck der Verdichtung und der Immobilienspekulation nur in seltenen Fällen standhalten konnten.

Die Kultur des modernen Städtebaus in Europa hat ihre Wurzeln im 19. Jahrhundert, als die Eisenbahn, die Industrie und das damit verbundene Bevölkerungswachstum eine grossflächige und stringente Planung der Städte voraussetzte. Im Tessin ist diese entscheidende Phase der Stadtentwicklung ausgeblieben. Ohne Bevölkerungswachstum gibt es keine Stadtentwicklung. Erst ab den 60-er Jahren des 20. Jahrhunderts führte der durch den Tourismus und den Dienstleistungssektor ausgelöste Immobilienboom zu einem unkontrollierten und spekulativen Wachstum und verführerischem Reichtum. Ohne Planung und ohne städtebauliche Vision entstand in den letzten 50 Jahren die verbaute Landschaft, deren Mängel wir längst erkannt haben, deren Transformation jedoch noch Generationen beschäftigen wird.

Lugano, the economic engine of the Canton of Ticino, has had a difficult time with urban development. After several stages of the merging of municipalities in recent decades, Lugano has risen into the top ten of Swiss cities, approaching the population of St. Gallen and Lucerne.

Lugano lacks urban density, however, and consequently also an urban feel. Urbane culture is not well developed. Its old town dates from the Middle Ages, but in the nineteenth century it was not supplemented and developed by the perimeter block structure typical of European cities. Industrialisation largely passed the Ticino by, and the corresponding population growth did as well. Instead of the dense, spatialising city of the nineteenth century, free-standing villas were building around the old town, which only in rare cases were able to survive the pressures of increasing density and real-estate speculation.

The culture of modern urban development in Europe has its roots in the nineteenth century, when railway, industry and parallel population growth made large-scale, rigorous planning of cities necessary. This crucial phase of urban development never took place in the Ticino. When there is no population growth, there is no urban development. Only in the 1960s, did the real-estate boom triggered by tourism and the service sector led to uncontrolled speculative growth and seductive wealth. Without planning or any vision for urban development, the landscape has been overbuilt over the past fifty years, and its deficiencies have long since become evident, and it will take generations to transform them.

Molino Nuovo Geschichte

Ursprünglich entstand die Agglomeration nördlich der Altstadt um eine Mühle herum, die von der Roggia dei Mulini betrieben wurde und die das Wasser des Vira-Tals und des Bavosa-Baches zusammen mit der Vignola und der Beltramina sammelt (heute eingedolt).

Die Anbindung an die Innenstadt wurde seit 1896 durch eine Straßenbahn sichergestellt. In den 1950er Jahren wurde die neue Via Zurigo südlich der Piazza Molino Nuovo erstellt, um eine effizentere Ost-West Verbindung zu ermöglichen.

Ein wichtiger städtischer Wandel begann in den 1930er Jahren mit Wohnsiedlungen entlang der Straßenachsen der Via Trevano, der Via Zurigo und in der Region Madonnetta. Der zuerst entwickelte Bereich befindet sich rund um die Piazza Molino Nuovo, während das Gebiet des Castausio-Hügels hauptsächlich aus Wohngebieten besteht. Der flache Bereich des Viertels ist stattdessen von Villen neben sozialen Wohnbauten (in der Via Trevano, der Via Marco da Carona und der Via Beltramina), Kunsthandwerksgeschäften, Werkstätten, Baumärkten, Holz- und Süßwarenfabriken (wie der Schokoladenfabrik Stella) geprägt. Die Grünflächen blieben jedoch so groß, dass bis in die 1960er Jahren der Eindruck bestand, auf dem Land zu leben.

Zu den öffentlichen Infrastrukturen, die im 20. Jahrhundert im Bezirk entstanden sind, gehören die Schulen von Molino Nuovo im Jahr 1905 und der Kindergarten in der Via Ferri im Jahr 1934, das neue Bürgerkrankenhaus von Lugano (1909) und das städtische Hilfswerk (1910) zusätzlich zum Transfer des städtischen Friedhofs nach Cornaredo und dem Baus des Stadions (1951). 1978 wurde die Casa Serena für die Aufnahme älterer Menschen und die Casa Primavera für Kinder und Jugendliche als Grundlage der modernen Sozialpolitik der Gemeinde gebaut.

In den 60er Jahren setzte dann allerdings auch der Bauboom ein, der im Wesentlichen zur heutigen städtebaulichen Situation geführt hat.

1996 wurde die USI - Universität der italienischen Schweiz im Gebäude des ehemaligen Bürgerkrankenhauses gegründet, das in den folgenden Jahren mit neuen Gebäuden zum Universitätscampus ausgebaut wurde.

Das Quartier Molino Nuovo kann also weder auf eine antike noch auf eine barocke Vergangenheit zurückblicken. Die Stadt entstand in relativ kurzer Zeit und ohne eine klare städtebauliche Vision. Heute erkennen wir jedoch, dass die bestehende Stadtstruktur beträchtliche Mängel aufweist die wir untersuchen, verstehen und mit neuen Strategien aufwerten wollen.

It was first connected to the centre of the city by tram in 1896. In the 1950s, the new Via Zurigo was built south of the Piazza Molino Nuovo to provide a more efficient east-west connection.

One important urban transformation began in the 1930s when housing developments were built along the axes of the Via Trevano, the Via Zurigo, and in the Madonnetta region. The area developed first is located around the Piazza Molino

Nuovo, while the Castausio Hill area is largely residential. The flatland of the neighbourhood has both villas and social housing (on the Via Trevano, the Via Marco da Carona and the Via Beltramina) and features businesses, handicrafts boutiques, workshops, DIY stores, lumberyards and candy factories (for example the Stella chocolate factory). The green spaces are, however, so expansive that until the 1960s it was like living in the countryside.

The public infrastructure built in the area in the twentieth century includes the Molino Nuovo schools of 1905 and the kindergarten on the Via Ferri in 1934, the new municipal hospital of Lugano (1909), and the municipal welfare organisation (1910); the municipal cemetery was relocated to Cornaredo, and a stadium was built (1951). In 1978, the Casa Serena was built to house the elderly and the Casa Primavera for children and teenagers as the foundation for the municipality’s modern social policies.

In the 1960s, however, a construction boom began that essentially led to the present conditions of urban development.

In 1996, the UniversitĂ della Svizzera italiana (USI), founded in the building that had formerly housed the municipal hospital, and in the years that followed new buildings were added to form a university campus.

The Molino Nuovo neighbourhood has neither an ancient nor a Baroque past to look back on. The city arose in a relatively short period of time and without any clear urban planning vision. We recognise today, however, that the existing urban structure has considerable disadvantages, which we want to study, understand and improve with new strategies.

Die Studierenden werden unterschiedliche Blöcke im Quartier bearbeiten, so dass durch die gemeinsame Arbeit des Fokus eine greifbare Vision für das gesamte Quartier entsteht.

Es stellen sich dabei folgende Fragen: -

Wie kann die bestehende Stadtstruktur im Sinne der Upcycled City aufgewertet werden?

Wie kann der Freiraum (und nicht die Gebäude) zum Protagonisten der Stadtentwicklung werden?

Welche Regeln sollen gelten, und welche Instrumente stehen für die Transformation zur Verfügung?

In einer zukünftigen Etappe soll das Stadtzentrum und Cornaredo mittels einer neuen Tramlinie verbunden werden. Es ist denkbar, dass diese Linie entlang der Via Giuseppe Bagutti geführt wird. Wir gehen für die vorliegende Semesteraufgabe davon aus, dass mittels Aufwertung des Strassenraums und des öffentlichen Verkehrs die zentrale Achse des Quartiers Molino Nuovo gestärkt wird.

Ein eigentliches Raumprogramm stellen wir nicht zur Verfügung. Dieses soll auf Grund der gewählten städtebaulichen Strategie individuel entwickelt werden.

Students will work on different blocks in the neighbourhood, so that the collaborative work of this focus will result in a tangible vision for the neighbourhood as a whole.

The following questions are raised: -

How can the existing urban structure be improved in the sense of the Upcycled City?

How can open (rather than buildings) become the protagonist in urban development?

What rules should apply, and what instruments are available for the transformation?

In a future stage, the city centre and Cornaredo will be connected by a new tram line. It is conceivable that this line will run along the Via Giuseppe Bagutti. For the present semester assignment, we will assume that the improvement of urban space and public transport will reinforce the Molino Nuovo neighbourhood as the central axis.

We are not providing an overall programme. That should be developed individually based on the urban-planning strategy selected.

Struktur_Transfer Structure_Transfer «Architektur zu schaffen bedeutet, repräsentative Aspekte der realen Welt - wie Natur, Geschichte, Tradition und Gesellschaft - in einer räumlichen Struktur auszudrücken, das heißt in einem abstrakten Konzept auf Grundlage einer klaren, transparenten Logik.» 4 Unter dem Titel struktur_transfer gehen wir Fragen zu relevanten Problemstellungen der Zivilgesellschaft nach und schärfen das Bewusstsein und die Verantwortung der Studierenden für unsere Umwelt.

Der Begriff Struktur begleitet uns auf allen Ebenen der Architektur und über den gesamten Entwurfsprozess. Struktur steht für Ordnung und das Rationale in der Architektur. Mittels strukturiertem Denken und Entwerfen entwickeln wir Strategien um komplexe Problemstellungen zu verstehen, zu bearbeiten und zu bewältigen.

Wir motivieren die Studierenden ihren eigenen Weg zu gehen und ihre persönlichen architektonischen Interessen zu hinterfragen, um eine individuelle und konsistente Haltung als ArchitektIn zu entwickeln und diese zu festigen.

‘Creating architecture is to express representational aspects of the real world, such as nature, history, tradition and society, in a spatial structure, which is an abstract concept, composed by clear, transparent logic.’ 4 Under the title structure_transfer, we explore questions concerning relevant problems of civil society and heighten the students’ awareness of and responsibility to our environment.

The concept of structure concerns us on all levels of architecture and throughout the entire design process. Structure stands for order and the rational in architecture. By means of structured thinking and design, we develop strategies to understand, prepare and master complex problems.

We motivate the students to find their own path and to question their own interests in architecture in order to develop an individual and consistent attitude as architects and to solidify it.

Tragstruktur Load-bearing structure Grundlagenwissenschaften, wie beispielsweise Mathematik oder Systemtheorie, bezeichnen Struktur als die Art der Zusammensetzung eines Systems aus Elementen und die Menge der Relationen resp. Operationen, welche die Elemente miteinander verknüpfen. Gemäss dieser Definition können innerhalb eines architektonischen Systems zahlreiche Strukturen festgestellt werden, z.B. Raumstruktur, Erschliessungsstruktur, Infrastruktur, Tragstruktur, Stadtstruktur oder Materialstruktur.

Die Tragstruktur im speziellen ist demnach das ideelle Gerüst, welches Konzept und Regelwerk über den Aufbau eines Tragwerks und das Zusammenwirken seiner Elemente umfasst. In diesem Kurs wollen wir unter anderem tragstrukturelle Konzepte entwickeln und diese in Tragwerke umsetzen. Das Tragwerk des Entwurfsprojekts soll dabei nicht als etwas behandelt werden das erledigt ist, sobald es technisch funktioniert, sondern die Tragstruktur und das dazu gehörende Tragwerk sollen kontinuierlich und zusammen mit der architektonischen Idee und den anderen Aspekten des Entwurfsprozesses entwickelt werden. Das Potential des tragstrukturellen Konzepts im Entwurf zeigt die Tatsache, dass das Tragwerk eine nicht austauschbare Notwendigkeit und der langlebigste Teil eines Gebäudes ist.

Wenn demnach das Konzept der Tragstruktur kohärent mit der architektonischen Idee ist, kann diese dauerhaft im Bauwerk verankert werden.

Zur Diskussion der tragstrukturellen Konzepte und deren Umsetzung in ein technisch funktionierendes Tragwerk essentiell. Darum wird der Kurs kontinuierlich durch Thomas Kohlhammer begleitet.

Basic sciences such as mathematics and system theory define structure as a kind of composition of a system of elements and the set of relations or operations that tie the elements together. According to this definition, numerous structures can be identified within an architectonic system: spatial structure, the structure of access, infrastructure, load-bearing structure, urban structure and the structure of materials.

The bearing structure in particular is the framework of ideas that comprises the concept and the rules by means of the construction of a support and the interaction of its elements. In this course we want, among other things, to develop concepts for load-bearing structures and implement them in supports. The supporting structure of the design project should not be treated as something that is finished as soon as it functions technically; rather, the bearing structure and the associated support should be continually developed together with the architectonic idea and the other aspects of the design process. The potential of the concept for the bearing structure in the design makes it clear that the supporting structure is not an unalterable necessity and the part of the building with the longest useful life. Accordingly, if the concept of the bearing structure is coherent with the architectonic idea, the latter can be anchored in the structure in an enduring way.

It is essential to discuss the concepts for the bearing structure and how they can be realised in a technically functional support. For that reason, Thomas Kohlhammer will be a constant presence in the course.

Das Semester beginnt mit zwei Vorübungen wo wir uns mit dem Begriff der „Upcycled City“ und der urbanen Struktur des Quartiers Molino Nuovo auseinandersetzen. Die erste Vorübung hat einen theoretisch, wissenschaftlichen Zugang und dient dazu sich das notwendige Grundwissen zum Thema in effizienter Form anzueignen. Die zweite Vorübung hat einen experimentellen und kreativen Charakter mit dem Ziel, den Einstieg in die Entwurfsaufgabe zu erleichtern.

Die Semesterarbeit ist gegliedert in Zwischenkritik, Pin-ups und Tischkritiken und wird begleitet durch fachliche Inputs.

Das Semester wird von Thomas Kohlhammer begleitet, mit dem die Entwicklung der Tragstruktur vertieft wird.

Normally, we establish a year-long exchange with a university abroad. This semester, as a result of the coronavirus, we are concentrating on local and familiar surroundings.

The semester begins with two preliminary exercises in which we study the concept of the Upcycled City and the urban structure of the Molino Nuovo neighbourhood. The first preliminary exercise has a theoretical, scientific approach and helps acquire the necessary basic knowledge on the subject in an efficient way. The second preliminary exercise has an experimental and creative character with the goal of making it easy to enter into the design task.

The work of the semester is divided between the interim critique, pin-up reviews and desk critiques and is supported by expert input.

The semester is supervised by Thomas Kohlhammer, who will follow the in-depth development of the supporting structure.

Einführung

Das Forschungsprojekt „The Culture of Water“, das im Herbstsemester 2018 in Zusammenarbeit mit dem Kyoto Institute of Technology (KIT) gestartet wurde, wird im Herbstsemester 2020 im Fokus Architektur & Energie weitergeführt. Das Hauptziel der fünfjährigen Studie ist die Erforschung der Architektur, der Lebens- und Landschaftsbedingungen um den Vierwaldstättersee und um den nordöstlich von Kyoto gelegenen Biwa-See, dem grössten Süsswassersee Japans. Wir nutzen dabei den architektonischen Entwurf als kreative Forschungsmethode, um plausible Lösungen für zeitgenössisches Bauen mit, auf und neben dem Wasser zu entwickeln und die Wechselwirkungen zwischen Natur, Kultur, Architektur und Mensch im Kontext der zwei verschiedenen Kulturen zu untersuchen.

Nachdem die ersten zwei Semester der Zusammenarbeit im Zeichen des Begriffspaares Wasser und Gefahr standen, beschäftigt uns nun, wie schon im Frühjahr, erneut die Frage von Wasser und Schönheit. Ort dieser Auseinandersetzung wird der Süden des Biwa-Sees sein, wo uns die 27

‚Acht Ansichten von Ōmi‘ (近江八景 Ōmi Hakkei) beschäftigen werden.

Diese in zahlreichen künstlerischen Darstellungen überhöhten acht Orte zeigen unsere acht Bauplätze am Biwa-See, fordern uns heraus, über reale und imaginierte Territorien im Zeitenwandel nachzudenken. Sie bilden ausserdem die Ausgangslage für unsere Erforschung des japanischen Schönheitsbegriffes. Wir werden uns fragen: Welchen Stellenwert haben die Natur, das Wasser, die (Jahres-) Zeiten und die Vergänglichkeit in der japanischen Ästhetik? Können wir diese natürlichen Bedingungen als Energie des Ortes begreifen und diese unserer Architektur einschreiben?

Und was bedeutet Schönheit in der Architektur in Japan, was bedeutet sie in der Schweiz?

Introduction

The research project ‘The Culture of Water’, which began jointly with the Kyoto Institute of Technology (KIT) in the autumn semester of 2018, will be continued in Focus: Architecture & Energy in the autumn semester of 2020. The main focus of the five-year study is to study the architecture and the conditions of living and the landscape around Lake Lucerne and Lake Biwa, located northeast of Kyoto, the largest freshwater lake in Japan. We will use architectural design as a creative method of research to develop plausible solutions to contemporary building with, on and next to water and explore the interactions between nature, culture, architecture and people.

After the two first semesters focusing on the terms water and danger, we will once more, as in the spring semester, explore the question of water and beauty. The site of this study will be southern Lake Biwa, where we will examine‚The Eight Views of Ōmi‘ (近江八景 Ōmi Hakkei). These eight places, highlighted in numerous artistic works, represent our eight sites of design interventions on Lake Biwa and will challenge us to reflect on the real and imagined territories throughout the transformation of time.

They are also the point of departure for our study of the Japanese concept of beauty. We will ask ourselves: What is the meaning of nature, water, times (of the year) and transience for Japanese aesthetics? Can we understand these natural conditions as the „energy of place“ and inscribe them in our architecture? What does beauty in architecture mean in Japan, and what does it mean in Switzerland?

Wasser und Schönheit Water and Beauty «We in our own human imperfections are repelled by the perfect, since everything is apparent from the start and there is no suggestion of the infinite.» soetsu yanagi, the unknoWn CraFtsMan, 1972 Da die Entwurfsaufgabe in diesem Semester am Biwa-See gestellt wird setzen wir uns vertieft mit dem japanischen Verständnis von Schönheit im Unterschied zu unseren westlichen Konzepten auseinander.

Die bereits in der Antike durch Vitruv definierten Grundprinzipien der Architektur, Firmitas, Utilitas und Venustas, prägen bis heute den westlichen Architekturdiskurs. Auch der Begriff der Venustas selbst, also der Schönheit, ist in der westlichen Kultur stark geprägt von den antiken Vorstellungen von Harmonie und Spannung, Proportion und Gliederung, Perspektive und Ordnung. Diese Art der Schönheit kann durch Masse und Regeln berechnet und erklärt werden. Der in der Antike manifestierte ebenbürtige Stellenwert der Schönheit wurde in der Moderne durch das Mies’sche „form follows function“ zugunsten der Utilitas, also der Funktionalität, in Frage gestellt. Daraufhin haftete dem Begriff der Schönheit in der Architektur über Jahrzehntelang das Stigma der Oberflächlichkeit und des Überflüssigen an. Doch ein vorsichtiges Umdenken macht sich seit einigen Jahren bemerkbar und wir beginnen wieder über Schönheit in der Architektur zu sprechen. Gleichzeitig zeigt sich eine gewisse Perfektions-Müdigkeit: Die Ideale von Harmonie, Ausgewogenheit, und Fehlerfreiheit sind nicht mehr Zeugnis handwerklicher oder künstlerischer Errungenschaft, sondern können in Planung und Fertigung digital und automatisiert erzielt werden. Die Schönheit der Imperfektion als Ausdruck von Individualismus und Natürlichkeit, aber auch Bescheidenheit, erschliesst sich uns neu. In diesem Kontext bietet die komplexe japanische Lehre der Ästhetik ein faszinierendes Feld.

Kintsugi 金 is the traditional Japanese art of putting broken pieces back together with gold bonding. The state of being broken is not the ending of the object but the beginning of another life - with a history.

Rather than hiding the scars, it highlights the imperfections and sublimates them to express unique beauty and authenticity.

Die ästhetische Tradition Japans ist wesentlich geprägt einerseits durch den buddhistischen Glauben an die Unbeständigkeit des Seins und andererseits durch die Selbstkultivierung des Konfuzianismus. Verschiedene Ideal-Prinzipien, wie etwa ‚Mono na Aware‘ 物 哀 (‚Das Herzzerreissende der Dinge‘) oder ‚Kire-Tsuzuki‘ 切 (die diskontinuierliche Kontinuität) sind Ausdruck dieses Spannungsfeldes. Die augenscheinlichste und charakteristischste Ausprägung dessen, was wir unter traditioneller japanischer Schönheit verstehen, ist ‚Wabi-sabi‘ 侘寂. Der nur schwer übersetzbare Begriff hat für die japanische Ästhetik eine ähnlich wichtige Bedeutung, wie die griechischen Ideale von Harmonie und Perfektion für die abendländische Kultur. ‚Wabi-sabi‘ kann in seiner umfassendsten Ausprägung eine Form der Lebensführung sein; in seiner enggefasstesten ist es ein spezifisches Verständnis von Schönheit. Ursprünglich bedeutet ‚Wabi‘ sich elend, einsam und verloren zu fühlen. Dies wandelte sich zur Freude an der Herbheit des Einsam-Stillen. Aber erst in der Verbindung mit ‚Sabi‘ – alt sein, Patina zeigen, über Reife verfügen – entstand die eigentlich nicht übersetzbare Begriffseinheit, die den Maßstab der japanischen Kunstbewertung bildet. Nicht die offenkundige Schönheit ist das Höchste, sondern die verhüllte; nicht der unmittelbare Glanz der Sonne, sondern der gebrochene des Mondes. Der bemooste Fels, das grasbewachsene Strohdach, die knorrige Kiefer, der leicht angerostete Teekessel, das und Ähnliches sind die Symbole dieses Schönheitsideals. Es geht um die Erhabenheit, die sich in der Hülle des Unscheinbaren verbirgt, die herbe Schlichtheit, die dem Verstehenden alle Reize des Schönen offenbaren.

Since the location for the design assignment in this semester is at Lake Biwa, we will study in detail the Japanese understanding of beauty in contrast to our Western concepts.

The basis principles of architecture as defined in antiquity by Vitruvius – firmitas, utilitas and venustas – still today shape the Western discourse on architecture. The concept of venustas – that is, beauty – in Western culture is in turn heavily influenced by ancient ideas of harmony and tension, proportion and articulation, perspective and order. This kind of beauty can be calculated and explained by measurements and rules. The equal value of beauty manifested in antiquity was called into question in the modern era by the Miesian ‘form follows function’ in favour of utilitas, that is, functionality. For decades, a stigma of superficiality and the superfluous clung to the concept of beauty in architecture. For several years now, however, a cautious reconsideration of this can be belt, and we are beginning to talk about beauty in architecture again. At the same time, a certain weariness with perfection is revealed. The ideals of harmony, balance and flawlessness are no longer evidence of success in the arts or crafts but are achieved digitally and automatically in planning and manufacturing. The beauty of imperfection as an expression of individualism and naturalness, but also of modesty, is opening up to us again. In that context, the complex Japanese teachings of aesthetics represent a fascinating field.

The aesthetic tradition of Japan has been crucially shaped on the one hand by the Buddhist belief in the instability of being and on the other by the self-cultivation of Confucianism. Various ideal principles, such as ‚Mono no Aware‘ 物 哀 (The pathos of things’) or ‚Kire-Tsuzuki‘ 切 (discontinuous continuity), express this tension. The most obvious and characteristic expression of what we understand traditional Japanese beauty to mean is ‚Wabi-sabi‘ 侘寂. This difficult-to-translate term has an importance for Japanese aesthetics that is similar to that of the Greek ideals of harmony and perfection for Western culture. ‚Wabi-sabi‘ in its broadest sense can be a way of life; in its narrowest sense, it is a particular understanding of beauty.

Originally, ‚wabi‘ meant to feel miserable, lonely and lost. This changed to the joy of the astringency of lonely breastfeeding. But it was only in connection with ‚sabi‘, being old, showing patina, having maturity, that the actually untranslatable unity of terms came into being, which forms the Japanese standard for evaluating art. It is not obvious beauty that is supreme but veiled beauty, not the direct glowing of the sun but the refracted one of the moon. The mossy rock, the grass-covered thatched roof, the gnarled pine, the slightly rusty tea kettle, that and the like are the symbols of this ideal of beauty. It is about the sublimity hidden in the shell of the inconspicuous, the austere simplicity that reveals all the charms of beauty to those who understand.

Die Energie des Ortes The Energy of Place

Die traditionelle japanischen Ästhetik verlangt von jedem Kunstwerk, ob in der Gedichtform des Haiku, im Holzschnitt oder in der traditionellen Architektur ein atmosphärisches Attribut, das den Bezug zu Natur, Klima, Tages- oder Jahreszeit herstellt. Wir möchten diesen hohen Stellenwert des natürlichen Kontextes als Inspiration verstehen, uns mit traditioneller japanischer Architektur zu beschäftigen. Während zeitgenössische Architektur in Japan, oft aus Gründen wie Ökonomie, Komfortanspruch oder baulicher Dichte den Bezug zum Aussenklima meist gänzlich negiert, zeichnen traditionelle Typologien sich durch sehr differenzierte Übergänge von Innen nach Aussen aus, die zwischen unterschiedlichen Klimata zu unterschiedlichen Jahreszeiten aber auch zwischen den Polen Kultur und Natur zu vermitteln und Durchlässigkeit zu erzeugen vermögen. The traditional Japanese aesthetic demands of every work of art, whether in the poetic form of the haiku, a woodcut or in traditional architecture, an atmospheric attribute that produces the connection to nature, climate and the time of day or the season. We would like to see this great value placed on the natural context as inspiration to engage with traditional Japanese architecture. Whereas contemporary architecture in Japan, often for reasons of economy, comfort or building density, usually negates the connection to the outside climate entirely, traditional typologies are distinguished by highly differentiated transitions from inside to outside, which mediate between different climates in different seasons but also between the poles of culture and nature and can produce a perviousness. Nature and climate thus become the ‘energy of the place’, to which our designs respond and that shapes our architectonic space.

The traditional Irori table is a sunken hearth with many functions. It used to heat the room and provided a place at home to prepare simple food. It is a source of light for the living room and can be used to dry clothes. And it is used to heat and boil water.

Die Acht Ansichten 八景 sind ein in der japanischen und chinesischen Kultur wiederkehrendes Motiv, in dem die schönsten landschaftlichen Ausblicke eines bestimmten Ortes künstlerisch aufgegriffen und dargestellt werden. Am BiwaSee sind dies die berühmten Acht Ansichten von Omi, welche seit dem 15. Jhd. zahlreiche Serien von Bildern, Holzschnittgrafiken, Gedichten und Erzählungen inspirierten. Wenngleich ihre Darstellung oft abstrahiert und idealisiert ist, entsprechen die Ansichten real existierenden Orten im Süden des Biwa-Sees. Die bekannteste Serie zu den Omi Hakkei stammt von dem einflussreichen Holzschnittkünstler Utagawa Hiroshige (1797-1858) und ist die Ausgangslage für unsere Semesterarbeit, denn die acht dargestellten Orte, sind gleichzeitig die acht Bauplätze für unsere Semesterinterventionen. Eight Views 八景 is a recurring theme in Japanese and Chinese culture in which the most beautiful views of the landscape of a specific place are addressed and represented in art. In the case of Lake Biwa, it is eight views of Omi, which since the fifteenth century have inspired numerous series of paintings, woodcuts, poems and stories. Although the depictions are often abstracted and idealised, they correspond to views of real sites on the southern side of Lake Biwa. The most famous Omi Hakkei series is by the influential woodblock print artist Utagawa Hiroshige (1797–1858), and it will be the starting point for our semester project, since the eight places it depicts, will be the eight building sites for our semester interventions. Der Ishiyama-Tempel liegt nicht am See, sondern etwas südlich an dessen Ausfluss, dem Seta. Wie der Name Ishiyama („Steinberg“) sagt, ist er am Hang einer auffallenden Felsformation gebaut. Mit seiner Lage am Hang ähnelt er dem Kiyomizu-Tempel in Kyōto. Eine Hütte am Rande des Tempelgeländes erlaubt einen Blick auf den See und den Herbstmond. (...) Auf Bildern dazu ist immer die große Brücke zu sehen, die den Seta unter Ausnutzung einer kleinen Flussinsel überquert, natürlich im Abendlicht. Über diese Setagawano-karahashi genannte Brücke verlief der Tōkaidō. Die heutige Brücke ist ein Nachbau aus Beton, aber im chinesischen Stil, mit giboshi auf den Geländerpfosten.

Zu einem Naturdenkmal gehört dazu auch ein Schrein. Die Kiefer musste gelegentlich nachgepflanzt werden, die heutige stammt aus dem 20. Jahrhundert. ( > Wasser, Vegetation, Regen, Nachtabkühlung...)

Karasaki is a projection on the edge of the lake that is lined with stones on which stands a single, strikingly large pine: hitotsu-matsu. A shrine is part of this natural monument. Wassernde Gänse kann man dort nicht immer sehen, wohl aber den kleinen Tempel, der abgesetzt vom Ufer auf Pfählen steht und mit diesem durch eine kleine Brücke verbunden ist. Der Tempel im Hōkyō-Stil hat den Namen Ukimidō. Das „uki“ ist aus dem Begriff Ukiyo-e (Holzschnittkunst) bekannt, es heißt „losgelöst auf dem Wasser treiben“. ( > Wasser, Fauna, Abendkühle...)

Programm Programme Für die individuellen Entwurfsprojekte werden keine verbindliche Nutzung und Raumprogramm vorgegeben. Basierend auf der Analyse des Ortes als Territorium zwischen Imagination (“Acht Ansichten”) und Realität (heutige Situation) entwickeln die Studierenden ihr individuelles Programm, dessen Ausformulierung zu einem dezidiert architektonischen Projekt im Gebäudemassstab führen soll.

Im Vordergrund der Suche stehen dabei die Begriffe Wasser (als Kontext im unmittelbaren und übergeordneten Sinn), Schönheit (als umfassender Ausdruck von Kultur) und Energie (im architektonischen Umgang mit Klima und Natur).

The use of and programme for the space will not be specified in advance for the individual design projects. Based on an analysis of the site as a territory between imagination (Eight Views) and reality (today’s situation), each student will develop his or her own individual programme, which should then be worked out into a decidedly architectonic project on the scale of a building. The focus of the search should be on the concepts of water (as context in the immediate and in the overarching sense), beauty (as an extensive expression of culture) and energy (as an architectural approach to climate and nature).

Semesterstruktur Semester Structure Traveling without moving Während uns, pandemiebedingt, eine Reise nach Japan und an den Biwa-See in diesem Semester nicht möglich sein wird, werden wir uns der japanischen Kultur, ihrem Verständnis von Wasser und Schönheit und den Orten rund um den BiwaSee so intensiv annähern wie möglich. Dabei greifen wir nicht nur auf virtuelle und digitale Möglichkeiten zurück, sondern werden auch den regelmässigen Austausch mit Studierenden und Lehrenden am KIT pflegen, die sich zeitlich parallel mit der gleichen Entwurfsaufgabe auseinandersetzen wie wir. Neben gemeinsamen Zwischen- und Schlusskritiken kommt den bilateralen Workshops ein grosse Bedeutung zu, bei denen sich die Studierenden durch die gemeinsame Arbeit annähern und ihr Verständnis von Aufgabe, Ort und kulturellem Kontext gegenseitig bereichern.

Semesterarbeit Die Semesterarbeit ist gegliedert durch Vorübung, Tischkritiken, Pin-ups und Zwischenkritik, und wird begleitet durch vertiefende Inputs. Die Projektpräsentationen mit dem KIT erfolgen virtuell mit Zoom und Miro. Dabei nutzen wir die digitalen Medien bewusst, um die narrative Qualität der Präsentationen zu stärken und so einen prägnanten Austausch mit Kyoto zu erleichtern. Dadurch wird auch Fernunterricht ermöglicht. Physische Modelle in verschiedenen Massstäben sind Konstanten des Entwurfsprozesses und sollen von ihrer Grösse her im Flugzeug-Handgepäck (SWISS: max. 55 x 40 x 23 cm, max. 8kg) transportiert werden können, um eine spätere Ausstellung des 5-jährigen Forschungsprojektes zu ermöglichen.

Digitale Workshops Das Semester beginnt mit einem Workshop zusammen mit KIT, wo wir uns mit dem Thema „Wasser und Schönheit“ und dem Ort am Biwa-See auseinandersetzen. Die HSLU- und KIT-Studierenden werden während des gemeinsamen Workshops die vergangene (imaginierte) und gegenwärtige (reale) Schönheit in Frage stellen. Der zweite Workshop findet während der Studienreise statt. Wir werden uns auf ‚Energie & Nachhaltigkeit‘ fokussieren und die interkulturellen Einsichten zu vernakulärer Architektur austauschen.

Entwurf und Bild Von der ersten Vorübung an werden wir uns der energetischen Atmosphäre der Semesterentwürfe über das Medium des Bildes annähern, ähnlich, wie wir es in Hiroshiges Acht Ansichten beobachten können. Dabei begleitet uns die japanische Künstlerin Chikako Fukami Thomsen, deren eigene Arbeit sich mit traditioneller japanischer Ästhetik beschäftigt und die uns japanische Bildtechniken näherbringen wird.

Traveling without Moving A trip to Japan and Lake Biwa will not be possible this semester because of the pandemic, but we will get as close as we can to Japanese culture and its understanding of water and beauty and the sites around Lake Biwa. To that end, we will employ not only virtual and digital possibilities but also regular exchange with students and teachers at the KIT, who will be addressing the same design task in parallel with us. In addition to joint interim and final critiques, great weight will be placed on bilateral workshops, in which the students will come together in collaborative work and enrich one another’s understanding of the task, the site and the cultural context.

The Work of the Semester The work of the semester is divided into a preliminary exercise, desk critiques, pin-ups and an interim critique and will be accompanied by in-depth input. The joint project presentations with the KIT will be virtual using Zoom and Miro. We will be using digital media in a deliberate way to reinforce the narrative quality of the presentations and to streamline a succinct exchange with Kyoto. This will also make distance learning possible. Physical models on different scales are constants of the design process, and it should be possible to transport them in airplane hand baggage (SWISS: max. 55 × 40 × 23 cm, max. 8 kg), in order to permit a future exhibition of this five-year research project.

Digital Workshops The semester begins with a joint workshop with the KIT, in which we will address the theme ‘Water and Beauty’ and the site of Lake Biwa. During the joint workshop, students from the HSLU and the KIT will call into question both past (imagined) and present (real) beauty. The second workshop will take place during the study trip. We will focus on ‘Energy & Sustainability’ and exchange intercultural insights into vernacular architecture.

Design and Image Beginning with the first preliminary exercise, we will approach the atmosphere of energy in the semester designs through the medium of the image, in a way similar to what can be observed in Hiroshige’s Eight Views. Studienreise Wissenstransfer - Japanische Kultur in der Schweiz Anstelle einer physischen Studienreise nach Japan werden wir uns ausserdem ein Woche lang auf die intensive Suche nach japanischen Spuren in der Schweiz begeben, an der alle Studierenden des Studios teilnehmen. Wir werden traditionelle und moderne japanische Architektur besichtigen, eine Teezeremonie erleben, einen Kalligrafie Workshop teilnehmen, Japanische Architekten und KĂźnstler besuchen, uns mit unseren Kollegen aus Kyoto an virtueller Karaoke versuchen und japanisches Essen geniessen.

Alpin Atelier Glarus: Ein Ideal - Feldsemester

Dieses Jahr bietet sich, auch wegen der Corona Krise, die erstmalige Chance ein Setting mit geradezu idealem Ateliercharakter betreiben zu können. Wir werden für das Herbst- und Frühlingsemester in Diesbach Glarus Süd das Haus der Direktion auf dem Legler Areal, einer ehemaligen Weberei und Spinnerei beziehen. Dort steht uns ein überhoher Atelierraum mit ca. 170qm plus einem grossen Besprechungszimmer zu Verfügung. Weitere Räume sind nach Absprache ebenso nutzbar.

Isabelle Behrens und Robert Pfad arbeiten seit längerem an der Umwidmung des Areals zu einer zeitgenössischen Klause.

Wir werden mehr Zeit miteinander verbringen und Erfahrungen teilen als bei den bisherigen Semestern. Einrichten müssen wir uns selbst. Dazu werden wir die ersten Wochen Möbel entwerfen und bauen, um arbeiten und schlafen zu können. Yves Dusseiller wird uns dafür eine mobile Schreinerwerkstatt zur Verfügung stellen.

Danach machen wir uns an die eigentliche, architektonische Arbeit.

Ein paar Gehminuten nördlich liegt das Hefti Areal, ebenfalls früherer Standort einer wichtigen Textilfabrik.

Erarbeitet werden sollen Szenarien, die für das Areal eine touristische Nutzung erlauben. Glarus Süd würde man wohl als strukturschwach bezeichnen. Doch genau darin sehen wir Qualitäten die einerseits zu entwickeln und gleichzeitig zu bewahren gilt. Ein schwieriges Unterfangen.

Wir freuen uns sehr mit der Zwischennutzung, trotz oder wegen der aktuellen Situation, eine Art partielle Austauschsemester auf der anderen Seite des Klausenpasses bieten zu können. Inmitten einer imposanten Bergwelt und in historischen Gebäuden können wir vor Ort nicht nur am Entwurf arbeiten, sondern hoffentlich viele Erfahrungen darüber hinaus teilen.

Alpine Atelier Glarus: an ideal - a semester in the field

This year offers, in part because of the coronavirus crisis, the unique opportunity to work in a setting that is almost ideal as a studio. We will occupy the administration building in Glarus Süd, a former weaving and spinning mill. Awaiting us there is a studio space with high ceilings of about 170 square meters as well as a large meeting room. Use of other rooms can also be arranged by appointment.

Isabelle Behrens and Robert Pfad have been working for some time on converting this area into a contemporary hermitage.

We will spend more time together and share more experiences than in previous critiques. We have to furnish it ourselves. To that end, we will design and build work and sleeping furniture during the first weeks. Yves Dusseiller will let us use a mobile carpenter‘s workshop to do so.

Then we start the real architectural work. A few minutes by foot to the north lies the Hefti site, which was previously the location of an important textile factory.

Leglerareal Glarus SĂźd

The goal is to work out scenarios that will make the site a tourist attraction. Glarus SĂźd can be described as lacking infrastructure.

Yet we see that providing qualities that can be developed and also preserved. A difficult task.

We are very pleased with the interim use, despite or precisely because of the current situation that enables us to offer a kind partial exchange semester on the other side of the Klausen Pass. In the middle of a world of impressive mountains and in historical buildings, not only can we work on our design on location but also, we hope, share many experiences beyond that.

Wir nehmen uns eines vermutlich eher selten geglückten Paradoxons an: Authentischer Tourismus. – Obwohl die Schweiz ursprünglich als Sehnsuchtsort voller Mythen und Naturerlebnisse die Berglandschaft als touristischen Sehnsuchtsort erfolgreich zu entwickeln begann und später die Berge nicht weniger erfolgreich zu Sportgeräten umwidmete und neue Sehnsüchte schuf, blieb dennoch die Frage danach wie die Besucher zu beherbergen seien für mich eher oberflächlich bis unbefriedigend beantwortet.

Die guten Beispiele sind rar gesät und oft von Klischees behaftet. Wie kann man auch einem Ort nah sein, mit ihm verbunden sein, wenn man nur kurze, zu ereignisreiche Tage bleibt. Wie kann man die Landschaft erfahren, wenn das gleichzeitig hunderte oder tausende Andere tun. Nichts ist Touristen so verhasst, wie andere Touristen. Ein weiteres Paradox.

Wir sind nicht so vermessen zu glauben in diesem Semester gültige Antworten zu finden. Dennoch wollen wir uns die Frage erlauben was Tourismus oder Erholung eigentlich sein könnte. Was kann eine eigentliche Brache, wie das Studio Basel in seinen städtebaulichen Bohrungen Glarus Süd betitelte, an Qualitäten entwickeln? Dazu wollen wir vom Ort und seinen Möglichkeiten ausgehen.

Material verstehen wir im Masterfokus nicht nur als lokales, nachhaltiges, vielleicht sogar zirkuläres Bauprodukt, sondern auch ganz generell als resonierenden Widerstand. Das vorhandene Material wird neben dem Architekten und der Architektin dadurch selbst zum Akteur. Diese Sicht ist Grundlage unserer Arbeitsweise.1 Sie entledigt uns singulärer Einzelleistungen, oder besser, es eröffnet uns eine feinere Wahrnehmung und damit universellerer, beständigerer Antworten.

Mit der Aufgabenstellung Bauten in die nicht sehr dicht bevölkerte Talschaft zu setzen, stellt sich in der Landschaft die ganz generelle Frage nach der Merklichkeit des Eingriffs. Wie stark unterscheiden sich Kultur und (kultivierte) Natur, wie gestalten wir das Verhältnis zwischen Ursprünglichkeit der Szenerie und der Verfeinerung durch unseren gestalterischen Anspruchs. Schlussendlich stellt sich die schwierige Frage wie identisch und authentisch ein Feriendorf sein kann. Ist es ratsam an bestehenden Bildern aufzubauen?

Authentizität im Sinne eines Originals, als entwerferische Zielsetzung, gewannen vermutlich über das letzte Jahrzehnt an Wichtigkeit, da die Befolgung eines Regelkanons nach den letzten Ismen einer persönlich gefärbten Selbsterkundung wich, deren Mittel Kohärenz, vielleicht sogar Logik waren, um ihre Wesentlichkeiten oder charakterstiftenden Eigenheiten zu plausibilisieren.

Die Gestaltung eines Originals, das in diesem Kontext nie Original sein kann, ist paradoxes und dennoch mächtiges Narrativ, das im Alpengebiet seit jeher mittels Postkarten und Reisbeschrieben transportiert wird. Denkt man an die Inszenierung burgartiger Kolosse, die manche Bergkuppe überhöhen oder an die romantische Platzierung etlicher Hotels vor Wasserfällen, ja überhaupt an Gewässern.

Wir wollen hier ansetzen, die Architektur als Erweiterung oder Verstärkung landschaftlicher Eigenheiten verstehen.2 Daher starten wir nicht mit unseren Vorstellungen von Häusern oder Grundrissen und Fragen nach Komfort oder Nutzungsideen. Wir beginnen beim Bild der Landschaft. Ein künstlicher See, dessen Name noch zu finden sein wird.

Wir werden im Semester Bauten untersuchen, die sich mit dem Verhältnis von Behausung und Landschaft exemplarisch auseinandersetzen. Dabei spüren wir den vielfältigen Gestaltungsarten aus dem Wechselspiel mit der Landschaft nach, unerheblich ob natürlich oder künstlicher Natur.

Um den Weiher herum, zwischen Strassenbrücke und Kanal sowie dem bestehenden Dorfteil Hätzingen wird eine touristische Nutzung nach ihren Vorstellungen entwickelt. Sie muss sich keineswegs an meinen schnellen Skizzen orientieren.

Meine vorgesehene Erweiterung der kleinteiligen Holzbauten von Adlenbach und der solitäre Hotelbau im Süden sind nur erste, noch oberflächliche und vielleicht nicht fertige Gedanken. Wir erwarten von Ihnen eine eigene Vorstellung und Konstellation der Nutzungen. Vor allem aber eine mit der näheren und weiteren Landschaft stark ineinander gearbeitete architektonische Antwort.

Gruppenarbeiten sind nicht zulässig. Wir wollen aber im Atelier zusammen arbeiten und diskutieren. Wir arbeiten mit Archicad Teamwork (es braucht gute Gründe um das nicht zu tun), ihren 3D Druckern, Modellen und präsentieren ohne aufgehängte Pläne, sondern mittels Projekthandbüchern. Im Atelier sind wir mindestens Mittwoch und Donnerstag, meist auch mehr.

Places of longing

We are assuming a paradox that is probably rather rare: authentic tourism. Although Switzerland was originally a place of longing, fully of myths and experiences of nature, it successfully began to develop its mountain landscape as a tourist destination and later, no less successfully, turned the mountains into sporting equipment and created new sources of longing, nevertheless the answers to the question of how visitors are to be housed range from the superficial to the unsatisfying.

Good examples are few and far between and often laden with clichés. How can one be close to a place, have a connection to it, if one only stays there for a few short, overly eventful days? How can one experience the landscape if hundreds or even thousands of others are doing so at the same time? There is nothing tourists hate more than other tourists. Another paradox.

We do not have the temerity to believe we will find valid answers during this semester. Nevertheless, we want to permit ourselves to ask what tourism or recreation could really be. What sort of qualities can a ‚fallow land‘, to borrow a term from the title of Studio Basel‘s urban planning studies of Glarus Süd, development? To that end, we want to start from the site and its possibilities.

In this master‘s focus, we understand materials not only as a local, sustainable and perhaps even circular product for construction but also very generally as a resonating resistance. The existing materials themselves thus become a participant along with the architect. This view is the foundation of our way of working.1 It relieves us of the need for singular, Individual achievements – or, more precisely; It opens up for us a subtler perception and therefore more universal, constant answers.

The task of putting buildings in a not very populated valley raises the very general question of how noticeable the intervention will be. How different are culture and (cultivated) nature, how do we design the relationship between unspoilt scenery and refinement by means of design? In the end, we are confronted with the difficult question of how identical and authentic a vacation village can be. Is it advisable to keep building on existing images?

Authenticity In the sense of an original, as a design objective, has probably increased in value over the last decade, because following a canon of rules based on the latest isms gave way to a personally coloured self-exploration whose means of making its essences or qualities plausible were coherence and perhaps even logic.

Designing an original, which in this context can never be original, is a paradoxical and yet powerful narrative that in the Alpine regions has been conveyed by postcards and travelogues. Think of the presentation of fortress-like colossi taller than some mountain peaks or of the romantic placement of some hotels in front of waterfalls or bodies of water in general.

We want to start understanding architecture as an expansion or reinforcement of the features of the landscape. To that end, we do not start with our ideas of houses or ground plans or questions of comfort or ideas about use. We begin with the image of the landscape. An artificial lake whose name still needs to be invented.

During the semester we will study buildings that engage in exemplary ways with the relationship of housing and landscape. In the process, we will get a sense of diverse types of design in the interplay with the landscape, no matter whether that landscape is natural or artificial.

Around the lake, between the road bridge and the canal and the existing village district of Hätzingen, potential use by tourist will be developed based on your ideas. It need not be based on my quick sketches. My planned expansion of the small-scale wooden buildings of Adlenbach and the solitary hotel building to the south are just the first, still superficial and perhaps unfinished ideas. We expect you to come up with your own idea and constellation of uses. Above all, however, an architectural answer that is worked out so that the immediate and more distant landscape are closely integrated.

Group works are not permitted. Still we want to work and discuss together in the studio. We will work with Archicad Teamwork (it takes good reasons not to do so), 3-D printers, models and not presenting with plans but with project handbooks. We will be in the studio at least on Wednesdays and Thursdays, usually more.

Herbst- und Frühlingssemester sind voneinander unabhängig, nichts destotrotz ergänzen sie sich. Zuerst arbeiten wir an einer grösseren Entwurfsaufgabe vornehmlich mit digitalen Werkzeugen (Archicad Teamwork). Es folgt das Gegenteil im Frühjahr; ein Kleinbau, den wir entwerfen, bauen und vielleicht einmal wieder besuchen werden.

«Bauen ist eine zutiefst menschliche Tätigkeit, als Ergebnis des beständigen Ringens des Menschen mit seiner Umwelt». Materialisierung und Plastizität wirken körperlich sinnlich und direkt. Diesem berührenden Wechselspiel von konstruktiver Machart und Ausdruck spüren wir von Beginn weg nach.

Sorgfalt

Strategisch gerüstet, werden sie lernen gründlich und umsichtig zu arbeiten.

«Wie man entwirft, prägt was man entwirft»4. Daher werden Sie verschiedenster Werkzeuge und entwerferischer Zugänge ermächtigt, die eine integrative Betrachtungsweise fördern. Sie werden erfahren wie sie verschiedentlich gelagerte, anfänglich divergierende Anforderungen, bis hin zu kulturhistorischen und anthropologischen Kontexten ineinander arbeiten können. Ihre Wahrnehmung wird sich verfeinern. Ihre Kopf Hand Verbindung wird bei digitalen und analogen Mitteln zukünftig weniger Hürde, sondern Grundlage für zukünftige architektonische Sprachlichkeit und Eloquenz sein.

Signifikanz

Die verdichteten ‚Sinngeflechte‘ ihres Entwurfes zu Fragen des Topos, der Tektonik und dem Typus wird ihre architektonische Intention nie unscharf, sondern substanziell werden lassen. Sämtliche Operanden werden sich in den Dienst einer alles durchdringenden Intention stellen. Essenz und Spirit werden signifikant – und gegenüber vermeintlichen Änderungswünschen widerstandsfähig. Sie werden spüren, wann ein Projekt fertig ist.

The autumn and the spring semester are independent of each other, but they nevertheless supplement each other. First, we will work on a larger design task using primarily digital tools (Archicad Teamworks). The reverse will be the true in the spring: a small building we will design, build and perhaps visit again.

Strategically prepared, you will learn to work thoroughly and meticulously.

«How one designs shapes what one designs.»4 To that end, you will learn a wide variety of tools and design approaches, which call for an integrative perspective.

You will experience how you can work differently structured, initially divergent challenges, even contexts of cultural history and anthropology, into one another.

Your perception will be heightened. The connection of head and hand with

digital and analogue means will in future no longer be a hurdle but rather then foundation for a future architectural idiom and eloquence.

Significance

The compact ‘web of meaning’ of your design on issues of the topos, tectonics and type will never allow your architectural intention to be unfocused but always substantial. All of the operands will contribute to an intention that permeates everything. Essence and spirit become significant – and resistant to supposed requests for changes. You will sense when a project is finished.

Openness

We will work in the studio. Together. We will experience specific places and people. We relate to one another and experience friction with the existing situation.

Die Aufgabenstellung ist bewusst sehr offen und komplex gehalten. Wir wollen ihnen zeigen wie sie durch stetes, breit gefächertes Abfragen und ‚Hinhören‘ eine Intention erarbeiten können, die sämtlich Bereiche ihres Entwurfes durchdringt, bestimmt und stärkt. Intentionen, begründete Konzepte, sind weniger heiteren Ideen geschuldet als dem sorgfältigen Zusammenweben eines breit angelegten ‚Sinngeflechts‘. Wir glauben mit diesem Blick aufs Ganze – und darüber hinaus erst wirklich kraftvolle, relevante Bauten entwerfen zu können.

‚Fehler‘ passieren, weil in der Tat etwas fehlte, meist Informationen, die man hätte brauchen können. Ein Projekt ist immer so gut wie seine Auslegeordnung oder heute würde man sagen, so gut wie der Algorithmus mit Daten hinterlegt wurde.

Daher zeige ich das Bild von Harald Szeemann. Dessen Auslage überwältigt und macht vielleicht ratlos, so wie wir es selbst von Projektaufgaben kennen. Genauso aber weisst es darauf hin, was ich unter Entwerfen verstehe. Es geht darum gedankliche Ordnung in eine unstrukturierte, von divergierenden Anforderungen geformten Materie zu bringen. Dichte Sinngeflechte zu entwerfen.

Dazu wollen wir ihnen Mitteln an die Hand geben, die wir nicht nur von Ihnen für die Projektarbeit einfordern, sondern auch von uns selbst in unserer täglichen Arbeit. Es geht darum, dass sie sich ausprobieren und erkennen was Ihnen wirklich liegt, wo sie stärken haben und wo es weniger leicht von der Hand geht.

Grundsätzlich wollen wir anleiten und Anstoss geben möglichst breit zu denken und zu arbeiten. In den Präsentationen werden wir dann jeweils versuchen die Erkenntnisse auf eine Vision und Absicht zu verdichten. Den oszillierenden Wechsel zwischen analytischer Arbeit und bewertender Synthese, das grundlegende Wesen entwerferischer Arbeit wird Ihnen so in seiner Methodik geläufig.

Arbeiten werden wir vor allem digital. Die Abhängigkeiten von vermeintlich notwendigen CAD und BIM Spezialisten in der digitalen Bearbeitung wollen wir hinter uns lassen und freudvoll aktuelle, wie althergebrachte Mittel nutzen.

Proposal for the Method

The assignment has deliberately been left very open and complex. We want to show how you can question constantly and broadly and ‚listen closely‘ in order to work out an intention that permeates, determines and improves all areas of your design. Intentions, justified concepts, are indebted not so much lively ideas as to meticulous interweaving of a wide-ranging ‚web of meaning‘. We believe that only with this view of the whole – and beyond – can you design truly powerful, relevant buildings.

‚Mistakes‘ happen because something was in fact missing, usually information one could have used. A project is only as good as its preliminary overview – or, as we would put it today, only as good the data on which the algorithm was based. For that reason, I present Harald Szeemann‘s image. His display overpowers and perhaps leaves one baffled, something we know ourselves from project assignments. At the same time, however, it points to what I understand designs to be. It is about bringing an ordering of thoughts into an unstructured material world shaped by divergent requirements. Designing dense webs of meaning.

We want you to employ means that we ask of you not only for the project but also of ourselves in our daily work. It is about testing yourself and recognising what you truly have, where your strengths lie, and where it is easier for you.

Fundamentally, however, we want to provide guidance and impetus to think and work as broadly as possible. In the presentations, we will then try to condense the insights back into a vision and intention. This will enable you to understand the methodology of switching between analytical work and evaluating synthesis, the fundamental essence of design work.

We will work primarily digitally. We want to overcome dependencies on supposedly necessary CAD and BIM specialists in digital processing and employ with pleasure both up-to-date and traditional means.

Der Begriff leitet sich von den heiligen weißen Elefanten ab, die von den südostasiatischen Monarchen gehalten wurden. Einen weißen Elefanten zu besitzen galt - und gilt in Thailand und Burma immer noch - als Zeichen dafür, dass der Monarch mit Gerechtigkeit und Macht regierte und dass das Königreich mit Frieden und Wohlstand gesegnet war. Die Monarchen veranschaulichten ihren Besitz von weissen Elefanten oft in ihren formellen Titeln (z.B. Hsinbyushin, lit. „Herr des weißen Elefanten“ und dritter burmesischer Monarch der Konbaung-Dynastie). Da die Tiere als heilig galten und nicht zur Arbeit verwendet werden durften, war das Geschenk eines weißen Elefanten gleichzeitig Segen und Fluch. Es war ein Segen, weil das Tier heilig und ein Zeichen der Gunst des Monarchen war, und ein Fluch, weil der Beschenkte nun ein teuer zu unteraltendes Tier hatte, das er weder weggeben noch praktisch nutzen konnte.

White Elephants

This term derives from the sacred white elephants kept by Southeast Asian monarchs. Possessing a white elephant was considered – and still is in Thailand and Myanmar – a sign that the monarch ruled with justice and power and that the kingdom was blessed with peace and prosperity.

The monarchs often indicated their ownership of white elements in their formal titles (e.g., Hsinbyushin, literally, “Master of the White Elephant” and third monarch of the Konbuang Dynasty of Burma). Because these animals were considered sacred, and could not be used for work, the gift

of a white elephant was at once a blessing and a curse. It was a blessing because the animal was sacred and a sign of the monarch’s goodwill but a curse because the recipient had only an animal that was expensive to provide for and could neither give it away nor use it for anything practical.

EMMI - Sbrinz

1907 gründeten 62 Genossenschaften den Zentralschweizerischen Milchverband Luzern (MVL). 1947 produzierte dieser in Emmen erstmals Weichkäse und Joghurt unter dem von Emmen abgeleiteten Markennamen Emmi. Als man 1993 im Milchverband Luzern die Verbandstätigkeit von den kommerziellen Aktivitäten trennte, entstand die Emmi AG. Diese stieg innert kurzer Zeit zum Branchenführer in Sachen Milchverarbeitung in der Schweiz auf. Seit Dezember 2004 ist Emmi an der Schweizer Börse SIX Swiss Exchange im Segment Schweizer Aktien kotiert. 1926 baute der damalige Milchverband Luzern ein Käselager an der St. Karli-Strasse in Luzern. Der Standort ist noch heute in Betrieb und wurde seit seiner Eröffnung mehrmals umgebaut und vergrössert. Heute lagert an der Reuss die gesamte Sbrinz* Produktion der Schweiz (60‘000 Laibe) im Wert von rund 30 Mio. Franken.

Die 40 Kilo schweren Laibe stehen in Regalen aus Weisstannenholz und werden bei 10 bis 14 Grad von neun Mitarbeitenden zu Beginn des Lagerns alle zwei Wochen, später einmal im Monat mit Leinentüchern abgerieben. Der Käse reift bis zu drei Jahre lang.

Jahrhundert, als der damals in Brienz hergestellte Käse nach Domodossola gebracht und dort verkauft wurde. Die Italiener nannten ihn dort ‚Lo Sbrinzo‘.

EMMI - Sbrinz

In 1907, sixty-two cooperatives founded the ‚Zentralschweizerischer Milchverband Luzern‘ (‚MVL‘; Central Swiss Milk Association in Lucerne). In 1947, it produced soft cheese and yogurt for the first time in Emmen under the brand name Emmi, which was derived from Emmen.

In 1993, when the activities of the association were separated from the commercial activities of the milk association, Emmi AG was formed. In a short time, it become the market leader in milk processing in Switzerland.

Since December 2004, Emmi has been listed on the Swiss stock market, SIX Swiss Exchange, as part of the Schweizer Aktien (Swiss Stocks) segment. In 1926, what was then still the Milchverband Luzern had a cheese warehouse built on St. Karli-Strasse in Lucerne. That location is still in operation today, though it has been renovated and expanding several times since its opening. Today, the entire Swiss production of Sbrinz* (60,000 wheels), with a value of around 30 million Swiss francs, is stored there.

The wheels, which weigh 40 kilos, are stored on shelves of white fir at 10 to 14 degrees Celsius and rubbed with linen cloths by nine employees every two weeks at the beginning of their storage and later once a month.

The cheese is ripened for up to three years.

Aufgabenstellung Assignment

Wohnen an der St. Karli-Brücke

Das direkt an der Reuss stehende Käselager der EMMI AG bildet zusammen mit der 1934 erbauten St. Karli Kirche einen Brückenkopf zum dahinterliegenden St. Karli Quartier. Es wurde 1926 erbaut und erfuhr 1961 und 1985 grössere bauliche Eingriffe und Erweiterungen. Von dem einst charaktervollen, im damaligen Heimatstil erstellten Gewerbehaus, welches eingeschossig mit schwerem Dach auf einem als Stützmauer ausgebildeten, dreigeschossigem Sockelbau stand, ist nur noch der Sockel und die ursprüngliche Nutzung erhalten. Die Stadt Luzern hat das kleine Gewerbe-Areal mit seinen Aussenbezirken bereits umschlossen.

Das Grundstück liegt mittlerweile an bester Lage und Exposition, und es erstaunt, dass die EMMI AG bis heute an diesem wertvollen Standort als Käselager festgehalten hat.

In dem gemeinsam mit dem Institut Architektur der FHNW durchgeführten Thesis-Semester nehmen wir uns eines einzigartigen Standortes an der Reuss an und setzen uns mit den Themen des Bestands, des Weiterbauens und Aufwertens auseinander. Wir werden es uns zur Aufgabe machen, das Potential dieses GewerbeAreals zu erforschen und mit Wohnraum zu verdichten.

Wir sind der Meinung, dass das Gewerbe als Teil eines innerstädtischen Kontextes unbedingt erhalten werden muss, und nicht in die Agglomeration verdrängt werden darf. In diesem Sinne nehmen wir die 60‘000 Laibe Sbrinz als geschenkten «White Elephant» an, und stellen der EMMI AG weiterhin ein Käselager mit dem dazu gehörenden Umschlagplatz zu Verfügung.

Neben der direkten Lage an der Reuss und der anspruchsvollen Auseinandersetzung mit dem modernen Kirchenbau auf der gegenüberliegenden Seite der St. Karli Brücke, gilt es auch, in der Projektarbeit die vielschichtige städtebauliche Konstellation im Kontext des Areals ins Auge zu fassen und zu klären. Eine präzise Analyse des Bestands, seiner Struktur und der geltenden Baugesetze wird die Eingriffstiefe der Projektarbeiten bestimmen. Die Anzahl der Wohnungen, Grösse und Ausbaustandard hängen von der jeweiligen konzeptionellen Auslegeordnung der Studierenden ab.

Zwischen- und Schlusskritiken finden gemeinsam mit der FHNW in Muttenz und an der HSLU – T&A in Horw statt.

Living at the St. Karli Bridge

The EMMI AG cheese warehouse is located right on the Reuss River and together with the St. Karli Church, which was built in 1934, it forms a bridgehead to the St. Karli neighbourhood beyond it. It was built in 1926 and had extensive architectural interventions and extensions in 1961 and 1985. All that remains of the original commercial building, which had been built in the Heimatstil (homeland style) of the time and once had a lot of character—a single storey with a heavy roof on three-storey foundation structure that formed a retaining wall—is the foundation and the original use. The City of Lucerne has already incorporated the small commercial site into its outskirts. The property now has an ideal location and view, and it is astonishing that even today EMMI AG is kept this valuable property as a cheese warehouse.

During the joint thesis semester with the architecture department of the University of Applied Sciences and Arts Northwestern Switzerland (FHNW), we are taking on a unique location on the Reuss and addressing the themes of the existing fabric, expansion and improving value. We shall make it our task to explore the potential of this commercial zone and increase its density by adding residential use.

We believe that commercial use should without question be preserved as part of an urban context, and need not be pushed off into the agglomeration. In that spirit, we are accepting the 60,000 wheels of Sbrinz as a gifted «white elephant»

and letting EMMI AG continue to use its cheese warehouse and the associated trading centre.

In addition to its location directly on the Reuss and its ambitious effort to relate to the modernist church on the opposite side of the St. Karli Bridge, the project should look at this diverse urban-planning context in the context of the site and help clarify it. A precise analysis of the existing buildings, their structure and the relevant building codes will determine how much the projects should intervene.

The number of apartments, their size and the standard of construction depend on the relevant conceptual preliminary analysis by the students.

Interim and final critiques are held jointly by the FHNW in Muttenz and the HSLU – T&A in Horw.

Das Thesisbuch unterscheidet sich vom Prozessbuch indem es eine These mit dem eigenen Entwurf verwebt. Neben der Erläuterung des architektonischen Projektes tragen Aussagen zu den Themen Material, Struktur und Energie zu einer vertieften Beschäftigung mit diesen Themen bei. Das Thesisbuch stellt in Ergänzung zur Projektabgabe ein eigenständiges Gefäss dar und synthetisiert das nutzbar gemachte theoretische Wissen mit der im Studium erworbenen entwerferischen Kompetenz.

With their thesis book, the students are writing the conclusion of their studies at the HSLU T&A: a writtten work that demonstrates their theoretical interests as well as their stance as designing architects. This is done by means of a well substantiated and developed thesis on the basis of a questionnaire and the application of existing theories and research. Combining the theoretical foundation and the student’s own design practice results in intersections and insights that enable the students to reflect on their own actions.

The assignment is based on the methods learned in-depth studies of the master’s course and the historical and theoretical knowledge acquired from them. The argumentation proceeds in an intelligible way and should use existing knowledge to substantiate the line of thought laid out in the project.

The thesis book differs from the process book in that it interweaves a thesis with an original design. In addition to explaining the architectural project, statements on the themes, materials, structure, and energy contribute to a deeper engagement with these themes. The thesis book represents an autonomous repository and synthesises the theoretical knowledge that has been made useful with the design competence acquired during studies.

Einleitung

In der Geschichte gilt die Erfindung der Stadt unabhängig vom Kulturkreis und der Zeit immer als Sinnbild für einen Meilenstein gesellschaftlicher Entwicklung. Erst durch die Konzentration von Bauten innerhalb eines politisch und ökonomisch determinierten Rahmens sind Formen des Zusammenlebens entstanden, die eine gewisse soziale und räumliche Komplexität aufweisen. Jede Form einer städtischen Siedlung ist dabei gekennzeichnet durch die ökonomischen und politischen Vorstellungen der Erbauer. Unabhängig davon, ob es sich um eine mittelalterliche Handwerkerstadt, eine Residenzstadt oder eine Stadtgründung der Moderne 75

handelt, die jeweiligen Wertvorstellungen manifestieren sich in der Art und Weise der räumlichen Anordnung, der funktionalen Gliederung und der architektonischen Ausformulierung. Die Disziplin Städtebau ist daher vielfach geprägt durch idealtypische Konzeptionen, die sinnbildlich für eine Vorstellung des menschlichen Zusammenlebens stehen. Im Lauf der Jahrhunderte entsteht durch Überschreibungen, Ergänzungen und Rückbau schrittweise eine städtische Realität, in der unterschiedliche Epochen und Wertvorstellungen unvermittelt kollidieren – man denke beispielsweise an moderne Eingriffe in mittelalterliche Städte – oder sich einzelne Ensembles zu einem komplexen Ganzen formen. Diese hier genannten Aspekte finden sich in vielen europäischen Städten und tragen damit auch zu deren Vielfalt und Qualität bei.

Um an einem konkreten und vielschichtigen Beispiel städtebauliche Entwicklungsschritte vertieft untersuchen zu können, werden wir in diesem Semester den Fokus auf die Schweizer Stadt Biel/Bienne legen. Anhand dieses Beispiels möchten wir einige der relevanten historischen städtebaulichen Konzeptionen erfassen und deren Prägung und Relevanz für den Stadtkörper untersuchen. Wir erhoffen uns dabei, dass wir ausgehend vom konkreten Fall auch allgemeingültige Prinzipien städtischer Planungen besser im jeweiligen historischen Kontext verorten können und deren Bedeutung für die Entwicklungen im Städtebau besser verstehen.

Introduction

Historically, the invention of the city has always – regardless of cultural sphere and era – been considered a milestone in a society’s evolution.

Only the concentration of buildings within a politically and economically determined framework creates forms of coexistence with a degree of social and spatial complexity. Every form of urban settlement is shaped by the economic and political ideas of those who build it. No matter whether it is a medieval city of artisans, a royal residence or the founding of a modern city, the values in each case are manifested in the way the space is organised, the functions are distributed and the architecture is formulated. The discipline of urban planning is thus affected in many ways by conceptions of ideal types that are emblematic of an idea of human coexistence. Over the course of centuries, as a result of overwriting, extending and selective demolishing, an urban reality gradually results in which different epochs and values collide directly – think, for example, of modern interventions in medieval cities – or individual ensembles form a complex whole.

The aspects identified here are found in many European cities and also contribute to their diversity and quality.

In order to study in detail one specific, multi-layered example of urban development steps, in this semester we will focus on the Swiss city of Biel/Bienne. Using that example, we would like to recapitulate several relevant historical urban planning concepts and study their influence on and relevance to the ‘body’ of the city. We hope that we can work out from the specific case in order to localise universally valid principles of urban planning in the given historical context and to better understand their significance for stages in urban development.

Von der Arbeiterstadt zur Stadt der Möglichkeiten

Sonderfall Biel The Special Case of Biel/Bienne

Biel bietet sich dabei aus einerseits aufgrund der städtebaulich-architektonischen Vielfalt als spannendes Untersuchungsfeld an. Andererseits stellt die Lage an der Sprachgrenze von Deutschschweiz und Romandie bis heute eine fruchtbaren Boden für sozio-politische und kulturelle Entwicklungen dar. Als Hypothese kann Biel als Laboratorium verstanden werden, wo die besonderen Bedingungen zu exemplarischen Ausprägungen führten, welche über die letzten 100 Jahre immer wieder die schweizerische Debatte bereicherten. So war Biel war bereits im späten 19. Jahrhundert geprägt von der Entwicklung der Uhrenindustrie, einem Einfluss, den die Stadt bis in die Gegenwart nie mehr ablegen konnte und welche durch die damit verbundenen Krisen und Aufschwünge sich in den Stadtkörper und ins Bewusstsein der Bevölkerung eingeschrieben haben.

Ein erster Fokus liegt dabei auf den Entwicklungen der Zwischenkriegszeit. Ab 1921 wurde Biel, wie viel andere, industriell geprägte Städte von der Sozialdemokratischen Partei regiert und bildete dabei einen Gegenpol zum nahegelegenen freisinnig dominierten Solothurn. Die bauliche Entwicklung in Biel bestimmten dabei eine Reihe initiativer Persönlichkeiten, welche den Städtebau vor allem auch als soziale Aufgabe betrachteten. Unter der Führung von Stadtpräsident Guido Müller und Stadtbaumeister Otto Schaub entwickelte beispielsweise der Architekt Eduard Lanz (1886-1972) zwischen 1926 und 1945 eine Anzahl von genossenschaftlichen Wohnsiedlungen (Rennweg, Falbringen, Möösli, Champagne und Linde), welche nicht nur erschwinglichen Wohnraum für die Angestellten der Industrie boten, sondern auch das Stadtbild in den Aussenquartieren bis heute kennzeichnen. Die Siedlungen von Lanz lassen sich dabei durchaus als schweizerische Adaption der von Ernst May in Frankfurt und Bruno Taut in Berlin zeitgleich gebauten moderne Wohnsiedlungen verstehen. Das 1932 fertig gestellte Volkshaus im Bieler Stadtzentrum ist eine architektonische Ikone und vereint die architektonischen Interessen von Lanz mit seinen sozialen Idealen.

Einen zweiten Schwerpunkt legen wir auf die Zeit nach dem zweiten Weltkrieg.

Der Wirtschaftaufschwung brachte für die Industriestadt Biel nicht nur eine neue Dynamik, es entstanden auch eine Anzahl von bedeutenden Bauten der Architekten Fritz Haller, Franz Füeg, Max Schlup, Alfons Barth und Hans Zaugg, deren lose Gruppierung später von Jürgen Joedicke als `Solothurner Schule` bezeichnet wurden. Die Werke der Architekten waren gleichermassen von den städtebaulichen Idealen Le Corbusiers wie von der Architektursprache Mies van der Rohes geprägt. Das Interesse der Architekten an Standardisierung und Technik, aber auch an den Gestaltungsmöglichkeiten der modernen Materialien Beton bzw.

Stahl und Glas zeigt sich beispielsweise in Bauten von Max Schlup, wie dem Kongresszentrum in Biel (1966), den Sportbauten in Magglingen (1970/1976) und dem Gymnasium Strandboden (1980).

Nachdem Biel bis zur Rettung der Uhrenindustrie durch Nicolas Hayek Anfang der 1990er Jahre eine wirtschaftliche Baisse erlebte, ergab sich mit der Vergabe der Expo 02 in die Dreiseenregion eine neue ökonomische und kulturelle Entwicklung. Wiederum war es mit Hans Stöckli ein Stadtpräsident, der erkannte, dass sich mit der Landesaustellung die Gelegenheit bot, städtebauliche Entwicklungen zu initiieren, bzw. die vorhandene Baukultur weiter zu pflegen.

2004 erhielt die Stadt den Wakkerpreis, die bedeutendste Ehrung des Heimatschutzes. Biel stellt bis heute ein Sonderfall in der Schweiz dar und übt auf viele Kunstschaffende eine Anziehungskraft aus. Sinnbild dafür ist die Robert Walser Sculpture von Thomas Hirschhorn (2019), wo der Künstler unmittelbar vor dem Bahnhof eine begehbare temporäre Skulptur schuf, die nicht nur das Werk des Schriftstellers Walsers reflektierte sondern auch zu einem Ort der Begegnung wurde.

From Workers’ City to City of Opportunities

On the one hand, Biel represents an exciting subject for such study because of the diversity of its urban planning and architecture. On the other hand, its location on the linguistic border between German-speaking and French-speaking Switzerland has made it particularly fertile ground for socio-political and cultural developments. Hypothetically, Biel can be understood as a laboratory where certain conditions led to exemplary solutions that have repeatedly enriched the Swiss debate on the subject over the past hundred years. For example, from the late nineteenth century, Biel has been influenced by developments in the clock and watch industry – an influence it has been unable to escape event today, and the associated crises and booms have left their mark on the city and the memories of its residents.

An initial focus will be on the developments between the world wars. From 1921 onward, Biel, like many other Swiss cities with substantial industry, was governed by the Social Democratic Party and thus represented an opposite pole to nearby Solothurn, which was dominated by the Free Democratic Party. The history of architecture in Biel has been influenced by a serious of innovative personalities who saw urban planning as in part or even primarily as a social task. Under the leadership of Biel’s mayor, Guido Müller, and head of its municipal planning department, Otto Schaub, for example, the architect Eduard Lanz (1886–1972) developed between 1926 and 1945 a number of cooperative housing estates (Rennweg, Falbringen, Möösli, Champagne and Linde), which not only offered affordable housing for employees of local industry but also still influence the look of the city’s less central neighbourhoods. The housing estates of Lanz can certainly be seen as a Swiss adaptation of the contemporaneous housing estates of Ernst May in Frankfurt am Main and Bruno Taut in Berlin. The Volkshaus (House of the People) in the centre of Biel, which was completed in 1932, is an architectural icon, and it combines the architectural interests of Lanz with its social ideals.

We place a second emphasis on the period after World War II. The economic boom not only gave the industrial city of Biel a new dynamic but also resulted in a number of important buildings by the architects Fritz Haller, Franz Füeg, Max Schlup, Alfons Barth and Hans Zaugg, a loose group that would later be labelled the ‘Solothurn school’ by Jürgen Joedicke. The works of these architects was influenced both by the urban planning ideals of Le Corbusier and the architectural idiom of Ludwig Mies van der Rohe. The interest of these architects in standardisation and technology, but also in the design possibilities of modern materials such as concrete, steel and glass, is evident, for example, in the buildings of Max Schlup, such as the Kongresszentrum (Conference Centre) in Biel (1966), the sport facilities in Magglingen (1970–1976) and the Gymnasium Strandboden (1980).

After Biel experienced an economic downtown that lasted until the watch and clock industry was rescued by Nicolas Hayek in the early 1990s, the awarding of the site of Expo 02 to the Three Lakes Region resulted in new economic and cultural progress. It was another mayor, Hans Stöckli, who recognised the opportunity the national exhibition offered to launch urban planning developments and continue to maintain the existing architectural culture. In 2004, the city was awarded the Wakkerpreis, the most important honour of the Swiss Heritage Society. Biel still represents a special case in Switzerland and continues to have an appeal to many artists. One symbol of this is Thomas Hirschhorn’s Robert Walser Sculpture (2019), a temporary, walk-in structure the artist erected directly in front of the train station, which not only reflects on Walser’s literary work but also becomes a place to meet.

Wir versuchen in unserem Seminar die gewählten Beispiele nicht nur als historische Phänomene zu verstehen und sie in der jeweiligen städtebaulichen Debatte zu verorten. Vielmehr sind wir daran interessiert, die unterschiedlichen Positionen miteinander zu vergleichen und so räumliche und soziale Qualitäten besser benennen zu können. Unter der Prämisse, dass Städtebau immer auch ein Abbild gesellschaftlicher Modelle ist, liefert die Analyse auch ein Abbild der Entwicklung Biel von der frühmodernen Arbeiterstadt zur heutigen `Post-Expo` Stadt.

Der Konzeption des Moduls ist getragen von der Überzeugung, dass entwerfende Architekten und Architektinnen in der Beschäftigung mit der beruflichen Praxis und Theorie von grundlegenden Phänomenen der Architektur wie auch von den konkreten Bedingungen und Themen beeinflusst werden, die innerhalb des Fachdiskurses geführt werden. Deshalb bietet die Auseinandersetzung mit der Architekturgeschichte und ihren Planungen, Bauten und Protagonisten ein relevantes Feld, um die eigene entwerferische Tätigkeit zu reflektieren, und innerhalb des historischen Kontextes zu verorten.

In this semester, too, we will try not just to understand the selected examples as historical phenomena but also to localise them relevant urban-planning debate. We are rather interested in comparing different positions with one another in order to better identify spatial and social qualities. Under the premise that urban planning always provides a picture of social models, the analysis, too, offers a picture of Biel’s development from an early modern workers’ city to today’s ‘postExpo’ city.

Das Semester wird in drei Abschnitte gegliedert: Zunächst erarbeiten wir uns über Inputreferate, mittels der Lektüre und gemeinsamen Diskussion von Texten sowie der Anschauung vor Ort während der Seminarreise einen Überblick sowie ein Vokabular, um das Thema zu verstehen, einzugrenzen und für unsere eigene Argumentation nutzbar zu machen. Im Anschluss daran dient dieses Wissen als Grundlage für die eigenständige, schriftliche Auseinandersetzung mit einem selbst gewählten Aspekt zum Thema, das in Form eines Vortrages präsentiert wird. In der dritten Phase werden die formulierten Thesen weiter verfeinert und als umfangreiche Textarbeit in eine verbindliche Form gebracht.

The semester will be divided into three sections: First, based on reading and discussing as group texts by a variety of authors, excursions to Winterthur, and input reports, we will work out an overview and a vocabulary in order to understand and narrow down the theme in order to make it useful to our argumentation. As we go forward, this knowledge will then serve as the foundation for independent, written study of one aspect of the theme that the students will choose themselves and present in the form of a talk. In the third phase, the theses thus formulated will be further refined and put into final form in a substantial written thesis.

Architecture is brought to life through drawings; it doesn’t exist before them.

Drawings are designer’s true constructions, the physical ones built in a place being their consequence, normally realised by others through a translation process.

Virtual presence, formal construction, individual expression and conventional rules: what is the real virtuality of the architectural drawing? What is its specificity?

If a picture is worth more than a thousand words, can it also contribute to more than just one building? How theoretical and critical can it be? This course will explore the complex aspects and fruitful consequences of these questions. Analogies and contradictions between theories, ideologies and knowledge, as well as points of contact and contrast with other disciplines, will be discussed and deepened in order to weave them into multiple levels of knowledge. Architecture is thus experienced as part of a more general cultural discourse, encouraging students to think across tendencies, trends and events and to position themselves as conscious members of today’s society. The different themes presented through lectures and excursions are to be understood as timeless tools in the hands of architects. Architectural theories are not pure abstractions; they move between absolute positions and relative relationships.

pline of architecture produce a space that is inherently urban because it is shared?

Both the public and the purpose of a genuinely urban architecture are issues that have been questioned time and again. This discussion often occurs against the backdrop of cities that are in a mode of crisis. But what is this crisis? How is it perceived by architects, and what are their responses?

As a discipline, architecture is both autonomous and bound to social, economic, political and cultural forces and to historic events that condition the urban environment. Is architecture able to render particular contexts urban – and can urbanity be ‘designed’? These are some of the questions that the focus lectures will pursue in the autumn. We will examine case studies that are either contemporary or that stem from recent history, with an emphasis on the postmodern urban experience. The focus lectures address the mediating role of architecture: its tendency to engage with cities on a symbolic level. This entails the interplay between the architectural imagination and the urbanisation process.

The course is organised into four topical fields, each one centred on a lecture and an assigned reading. In weekly intervals the four texts serve as a basis for class discussions and will be assessed in a final examination.

This semester we will investigate contemporary formats of architectural (re-) presentation in exhibitions.

Architecture exhibitions often leave the impression that architects are the only people responsible for a building project.

Instead, the discipline of architecture is one negotiated by many stakeholders.

This reality is only sometimes addressed in architecture exhibitions.

A building is always a product by many narratives, may it be the initial idea of the client, the first design of the architect, the implementation of a concept for the statics, the building constraints, the crafting of the furniture by the carpenter, the calculation of the building costs by the project manager, of the water and electricity by the building technologist or the eventual adaptation by the user.

For this reason, we will reflect on possibilities of exhibiting architecture by including the network behind a building project. The outcome will be presented in a curated, virtual exhibition.

Six curators with different backgrounds and vantage points in exhibition making will each direct a one-day workshop session. They will be conveying their experiences and expertise in lectures and coaching sessions, each of which will then build on earlier ones, focusing on different aspects of making an exhibition.
