ACADEMICS
Academic Calendar The Academic Year is divided into two semesters. The first semester is from August to December while the second semester is from January to May. The midyear term is from June-July. Each semester is composed of at least 16 weeks or 100 class days exclusive of registration and final examination days.
All degree granting units offer courses on a semestral basis, except for the College of Public Health for its graduate programs, and the School of Health Sciences for its ladderized program, which are offered on a quarterly basis.
Classes are generally held from Mondays to Fridays between 7 am to 7 pm for both undergraduate and graduate programs except for the Master of Occupational Health, Master
of Arts in Health Policy Studies, Master of Management, and Master of Hospital Administration that offer subjects during Saturdays from 5 pm to 9 pm.
English is the primary medium of instruction for both graduate and undergraduate courses except for courses in which the medium of instruction is Filipino. The use of Filipino in teaching some undergraduate courses is strongly encouraged.
Most classes meet three hours a week and carry 48 clock hours of instruction and three units of credit. The credit unit for laboratory subjects or other related student activity varies per college. PAGE 3
General Education Program The GE program started in 1958 and had undergone several revisions since then. The revisions are meant to integrate internal changes and external factors, such as national developments (People Power revolution in 1986, K to 12 program), internationalization of higher education, globalization, complex issues and challenges (climate change, emerging illnesses and other new health threats, environmental issues, social conflicts, war and terrorism), and exponential growth of knowledge and new technologies. The latest revision included the development

Distinct Academic Programs in the Philippines Integrated Arts and Medicine Program (INTARMED) This is a seven-year program of the UP Manila College of Medicine (UPCM) that shortens the whole medical education by two years.
It consists of two years of pre-medical courses (Learning Unit 1 – 11), four years of regular medical studies (Learning Unit 111 – 1V) and one year of clinical internship (Learning Unit V11). Students who enter Level 1 are considered direct entrants while students who enter Level 111 are considered lateral entrants.
The top 100 passers of the UP College Admission Test (UPCAT) are given the privilege to enroll in the INTARMED program.
