UP Manila Oblation The Oblation is the signature landmark of UP which symbolizes the University’s commitment to serve the people.

The original UP oblation was a concrete statue by Filipino artist Guillermo E. Tolentino conceived during the presidency of Rafael Palma who requested that the statue be based on the second verse of Rizal’s Mi Ultimo Adios.

This was dedicated on March 1939 at the UP Manila campus where it stayed until February 1949, when the main administrative offices of the university moved to the new Diliman campus in Quezon City. The transfer of the Oblation to its new home served as the highlight of the move from Manila, which is historically referred to as the Exodus. The original sculpture is being kept at the Main Library (Gonzalez Hall), the former site of the U.P. College of Fine Arts.

The UP Manila Oblation was inaugurated on June 18, 2008 during the celebration of the 100 years of UP. The UP Manila Oblation stands on the pedestal of academic excellence, symbolized by the flowing fabric of scholarship interspersed with leaves reminiscent of the nature and symbols of the colleges and units of UP Manila.

The UP Manila oblation is the interactive work of Guillermo Estrella Tolentino, the first Philippine National Artist for Sculpture, and UP Open University professor Grace Javier Alfonzo.

College of Medicine Located in Pedro Gil Street, Ermita, Manila, the Fernando Calderon Hall is the main building of the UP College of Medicine (the others being Salcedo Hall, Alvior Hall, Paz Mendoza Hall, and Basic Sciences Lecture Rooms). Named after the first Filipino dean of the college, it opened in 1910, after the creation of the Philippine Medical School in 1905 (the forerunner of UPCM).

The College of Medicine’s commitment to excellence and leadership in medical education and research, and its community orientation in service underlie its tradition. UPCM is a Center of Excellence in Medical Education by the Commission on Higher Education (CHED). It is also the first medical school with the highest Level 4 accreditation by the Philippine Accrediting Association of Schools, Colleges, and Universities (PAASCU).

Fronting the College of Medicine building is a white statue of a naked long-haired woman holding a torch and standing on top of a skull – “The Triumph of Science over Death” copied from Jose Rizal’s clay sculpture.

A sculpture named “A Celebration of Life” by National Artist Napoleon Abueva stands beside the College of Medicine. Erected in 2005 as part of the UPCM Centennial Celebration, the sculptural tableau displays seven figures of naked men and women in various states of celebration paying tribute to good health.

Museum of a History of Ideas The UP Manila Museum of a History of Ideas was inaugurated on 22 October 2014. This facility, the first of its kind in the country, chronicles the first few decades of the University and its vital role in shaping Philippine history, including the pioneering developments in medicine, health and social sciences, arts, and humanities.

It occupies a heritage building that was formerly occupied by the College of Dentistry. Opened in 1931, this building served as the University Infirmary. During World War II, it doubled as the emergency headquarters of the administrative offices.

Restoration of the building into its original lines as well as for adaptive reuse began in 2009 with the original faรงade retained under the leadership of globally renowned Architect Ed Calma.

The Museum also serves as a venue for academic, social, and cultural events.
