LISTEN TO THE LANDSCAPE PRODUCT: REGIONAL DESIGN COURSE LOCATION: EAST GRONINGEN SCALE: REGIONAL DATE: JUNE 2017 - AUGUSTUS 2017

p. 3

1

‘LISTEN TO THE LANDSCAPE’ IS A REGIONAL DESIGN FOR THE EAST PART OF GRONINGEN. THE MAIN CHARACTERISTICS OF THE GRONINGEN LANDSCAPE ARE THE ENDLESS HORIZONS OF THE AGRICULTURAL LAND, THE HISTORICAL FARMS OF THE GRAIN REPUBLIC, AND THE WINDS THAT DOMINATE THE DOLLARD AREA. IN THIS PART OF THE NETHERLANDS, PROBLEMS INVOLVING WATER LIKE SALINATION, WATER SAFETY, AND WATER QUALITY ARE PRESENT. ALSO, PROBLEMS INVOLVING LAND-USE, THE QUALITY OF AGRICULTURAL LAND, ECOSYSTEM DISPERTION, AND LAND SUBSIDENCE ARE PRESENT. IN THIS NEW DESIGN FOR THE REGION, A BALANCE IN WATER MANAGEMENT IS FOUND THROUGH RESTORING WATER LEVELS AND BY ‘LISTENING TO THE LANDSCAPE’. WHAT IS MEANT HERE, IS THAT EXISTING CHARACTERISTICS AND PROCESSES OF AND IN THE LANDSCAPE THAT ARE NOW BEING FOUGHT (e.g. SEEPAGE, DEFERTILIZATION, SALINIFICATION) ARE TURNED INTO SOLUTIONS. NEW WATERBODIES ARE CREATED IN PLACES OF NATURALLY LOWER AREA’S THAT HELP DEAL WITH THESE KIND OF PROBLEMS.

p. 4

< LANDSCAPE IDENTITIES

IDENTITIES. THESE DIFFERENT IDENTITIES CAN BE DEVIDED INTO FOUR GROUPS: THE NEW LAND; BLAUWESTAD; THE OLD LAND; AND THE RIVERLAND. THESE IDENTITIES ALL HAVE DIFFERENT ORIGINS AND LANDSCAPE CHARACTERISTICS.

CONCEPT

NATURALLY FRESH WATER THAT IS PRESENT IN THE AREA SHOULD NOT BE DRAINED, BUT IT SHOULD BE USED TO ENHANCE THE LANDSCAPE AND SOLVE PROBLEMS PRESENT IN THE LANDSCAPE. BY CREATING FRESH WATER BODIES, THE SUBSIDENCE AND SALINIFICATION OF THE LANDSCAPE CAN BE FOUGHT. AS A RESULT, THE PRODUCTIVITY OF THE AGRICULTURAL LAND CAN INCREASE AND THE FLOW OF SALTY GROUND WATER FROM THE NORTH SEA WILL STOP.

p. 7

< USE WATER TO INCREASE SAFETY, TO LIMIT RISK OF FLOODS, INCREASE RECREATIONAL POSSIBILITIES AND BOOST THE ECONOMY.

< ENHANCE THE LANDSCAPE REVERSAL. HIGH GROUNDS THAT USED TO BE SURROUNDED BY SEA ARE NOW SUBSIDING AND SURROUNDED BY HIGHER GROUNDS.

< USE NATURE-FRIENDLY RIPARIAN ZONES SO NATURE CAN SETTLE DOWN AND HABITAT WILL BE INCREASED. BECAUSE OF THIS, ECOSYSTEM DISPERTION WILL BE (MOSTLY) SOLVED.

< KEEP WATER IN THE AREA! TRANSPORTING WATER THROUGH CANALS AND DITCHES MAKES WATER QUALITY DECLINE. NUTRIENTS WILL BE ADDED TO THE WATER CAUSING ECOSYSTEMS TO BE DESTROYED.

CLOSE TO BLAUWESTAD, FARMERS HAVE COLLABORATELY BOUGHT LAND TO FORM NATURE AREA’S IN ORDER TO HELP RESTORE BIODIVERSITY AND ECOSYSTEM DISPERTION. IN ONE OF THESE NATURE AREA’S, A RED WATCH TOWER, SIMILAR TO THE WATCH TOWER TO THE LEFT, IS PRESENT. THE WATCH TOWER IN THE DESIGN OF ‘LISTEN TO THE LANDSCAPE’ WILL FORM A TRIBUTE TO THESE FARMERS. LOCAL PEOPLE THAT VISIT THIS NEW TOWER WILL IMMEDIATELY RECOGNIZE IT AS A REFERENCE POINT.

NEW OUTDOOR FREE PLAY PRODUCT: BACHELOR THESIS LOCATION: BIJLMER-EAST RESIDENTIAL AREA SCALE: PLAYGROUND / PLAYSCAPE DATE: SEPTEMBER 2017 - OKTOBER 2017

p. 19

2

‘NEW OUTDOOR FREE PLAY’ IS A PLAYGROUND DESIGN FOR THE RESIDENTS OF THE BIJLMER-EAST RESIDENTIAL AREA (BEE HIVE-STRUCTURED FLATS). ACCORDING TO THE AMSTERDAM ‘BEWEEG ATLAS’ (A DOCUMENT ABOUT PHYSICAL ACTIVITY IN AMSTERDAM’S NEIGHBOURHOODS), THE CHILDREN IN THE AMSTERDAM BIJLMER (-EAST) HAVE LESS PHYSICAL ACTIVITY THAN CHILDREN LIVING IN OTHER NEIGHBOURHOODS. ALSO, THE AMOUNT OF PHYSICAL ACTIVITY-RELATED DISEASES LIKE CARDIOVASCULAR DISEASES, DIABETES, AND OBESITY IS HIGHER AMONG CHILDREN LIVING IN THE BIJLMER (-EAST) COMPARED TO CHILDREN LIVING IN OTHER NEIGHBOURHOODS OF AMSTERDAM. IN LITERATURE IS THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN THESE DISEASES AND THE AMOUNT OF PHYSICAL ACTIVITY DESCRIBED. ALSO, THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN PHYSICAL ACTIVITY AND OUTDOOR PLAY IS DESCRIBED. IN THIS DESIGN, A NEW NATURAL PLAYSCAPE IS DESIGNED THAT WILL BE MORE ATTRACTIVE FOR CHILDREN TO PLAY IN, SO THE AMOUNT OF OUTDOOR PLAY TIME WILL INCREASE.

SITE’S PLAYGROUND ANALYSIS

THE ANALYSIS IS SUPPORTED BY FOUND LITERATURE THAT DESCRIBES CHARACTERISTICS AND ASPECTS OF A PLAYGROUND THAT PROMOTE DIFFERENT KIND OF PLAY STYLES. FOR EXAMPLE: SOFT SURFACES (GRASS, SAND, AND WOOD CHIPS) PROMOTE CREATIVE PLAY AND SUPPORT CHILDREN TO ACTIVELY MANIPULATE THEIR ENVIRONMENT. FULL TEXT CAN BE FOUND IN MY THESIS REPORT.

IMAGE 7: THE THIRD PLAYGROUND. THIS SMALL PLAYGROUND IS IN A ROUND SHAPE WITH SAND, AND METAL PLAY EQUIPMENT. THE SIZE OF THIS PLAYGROUND IS 250M2.

p. 21

^ THE FIRST PLAYGROUND. THE SURFACE CONSISTS OF WOOD CHIPS PROVIDING IN A SOFR SURFACE. THE GREEN BAMBOO DOMES ARE DISPLAYED AS WELL AS THE METAL PLAY EQUIPMENT. THE PLAYGROUND IS ABOUT 900M2.

IMAGE 6: THE SECOND PLAYGROUND. IN THIS PLAYGROUND, ALL SURFACES ARE HARD MAN-MADE SURFACES. NO GREEN SPACE IS PRESENT IN THE PLAYGROUND. ALL PLAY EQUIPMENT IS MANMADE, FROM STEEL. THE SIZE OF THIS PLAYGROUND IS ABOUT 1200M2.

<

CONCEPT MAP

N

THE CONCEPT OF THE SHAPES OF THE PLAYSCAPE COME FROM THE STRUCTURE OF THE RESIDENTIAL FLATS OF THE BIJLMER-EAST. THESE FLATS ARE BUILD IN THE HEXAGON SHAPE, DESCRIBED AS THE HONEYCOMB FLATS. THE BORDERS OF THE PLAYGROUND ARE IN A REPETITIVE CIRCULAR FORM, BORROWED FROM THE FLOWER OF LIFE, WHICH REPRESENTS CONNECTION AND HARMONY, SOMETHING THAT IS IMPORTANT IN THE BIJLMER-EAST. THE SHAPES OF THE PLAYSCAPE ALSO PROVIDE IN AN OPEN-CLOSED RELATIONSHIP. THE HONEYCOMB STRUCTURE IS AN OPEN AREA, WHERE ACTIVE AND SOCIAL PLAY CAN EASILY TAKE PLACE. IN THE FLOWER OF LIFE STRUCTURE, THE AREA IS MORE CLOSED AND PRIVATE. HERE, CREATIVE AND QUIET PLAY CAN EASILY TAKE PLACE. BOTH STRUCTURES DO NOT EXCLUDE OTHER PLAYSTYLES.

OFF-TRACK PRODUCT: SITE DESIGN COURSE LOCATION: LANDSCAPE PARK LINGEZEGEN, IN BETWEEN NIJMEGEN AND ARNHEM SCALE: ESTATE DATE: SEPTEMBER 2015 - OKTOBER 2015

p. 49

4

‘OFF TRACK’ IS AN ESTATE DESIGN FOR LANDSCAPE PARK LINGEZEGEN. THE ESTATE LIES ON THE BORDER OF WATERLAND AND LANDBOUWLAND, TWO SUB-PARKS WITHIN PARK LINGEZEGEN. THE UNDERLAYING THEME OF THE ESTATE IS PERMACULTURE. IN THE DESIGN, THE MAIN INCOME OF THE ESTATE COMES FROM FOODPRODUCTION AND REET PRODUCTION. THE IMAGES BELOW SHOW THE MATERIAL USE OF THE ESTATE. RECYCLED CONCRETE AND WOOD ARE USED, AS THESE MATERIALS ARE SUSTAINABLE AND IMPACT ON THE ENVIRONMENT IS LIMITED (IN THEIR RE-USED STATE).

p. 50

p. 51

CONCEPT >

THE CONCEPT OF ‘OFF-TRACK’ IS THAT PEOPLE PURPOSELY GET LOST. THE VISITORS OF THE ESTATE FOLLOW A SERPENTINE PATH THAT CLOSES AND OPENS VIEWS AT CERTAIN POINTS. THE DESIGN OF THE ESTATE IS RELATED TO WHICH PART THE ESTATE IS IN. ON THE TOP PART, THE ESTATE IS IN WATERLAND. THE CHARACTERISTICS OF WATERLAND ARE THE ORGANIC SHAPES, WATER BODIES AND NATURE. ON THE BOTTOM, THE ESTATE IS IN LANDBOUWLAND. THE CHARACTERISTICS OF LANDBOUWLAND ARE THE STRAIGHT PARCELS, AGRICULTURAL LAND USE, AND SMALL FORESTS. WHEN WALKING THE PATH OF ‘OFF-TRACK’, THE LANDSCAPE GRADUATELY

CHANGES,

THE

IMPRESSION THE WHOLE ESTATE IS THE SAME. ONLY AT CERTAIN HIGHER POINTS, THE VISITOR HAS A CLEAR VIEW OF WHAT IS TO COME, AND WHAT IS ALREADY PASSED. ONLY IN THESE POINTS, THE VISITOR CAN EXPERIENCE THE GRADUATE CHANGE.
