June
From the General Manager, Mark Reid
Heading into mid-year we are adjusting to certain headwinds, primarily labor availability and rates as well as some extended lead times on purchases. The April Bureau of Labor Statistics inflation of 8.2% is concerning on a forward looking basis. We hope inflation tails off before our benchmark July statistics are published. However, it appears that we are going to be in this inflationary period for a while. Generally I like to keep this article forward looking. No one likes to drive while looking in the rear view mirror. But I think it’s important to talk about a couple of items that became issues in May.
Let's talk about Algae and Aquatic growth.

May of this year presented optimal growth conditions for Algae and other aquatic growth Clubs like Coontail. High nutrient load from runoff of multiple heavy rain storms combined with Resource Directory unseasonable warm temperatures in the 90’s produced growth that is not normally seen to May Maintenance Update the extent it was this year. We monitored the growth and identified its species. As aquatic 2021 Common Violations growth is healthy for our lakes and our fish population, the problem was the unsightly appearance in the shallow coves that warm up at a faster rate than the deep water. This year, we have acquired and are using a mechanical shear (like a hedge trimmer) that trails behind a boat and cuts the growth off at a distance of 5.5 feet below the water line. Mechanical abatement is the first line of safe treatment although it is labor intensive. The second line of treatment is chemical application. To date, we do not put chemicals in the lake to treat aquatic growth. Staff has consulted with our contracted Laboratory and aquatic specialist to provide a list of possible chemical treatments that are effective in treating the algae growth but non harmful to fish and other fresh water life. We have also asked our LPOA Lake Use Committee to make recommendations in this matter. Additionally, we are performing our annual water quality tests of samples taken from multiple coves in the main lakes. We do all of this not because there is a perceived problem, but more so to assure that there is not a problem through test results. I believe that when the nutrient loads diminish and the lake becomes more active with boaters and increased wave action, we will see the remaining algae dislodge and disburse as it has in prior years. It is critically important that when try to achieve the perfect balance between visual appearance and healthy biology in our recreational lakes that we don’t take a step that will cause damage either internally within the lakes or externally to surrounding properties that use lawn irrigation from the lakes.
Let's talk about mowing grass. As with aquatic growth, the fescue grass on common ground loves the nutrients that are applied and the rain and sunshine of April and May as it comes out of its dormant state. This causes an growth rate that is hard to manage with a standard crew that mows common ground throughout the months of May through October. Given the lost time of numerous rain days and ground that is to wet to mow without causing damage, May becomes a precarious month where the grass gets ahead of us. It is not practical to double the manpower and double the equipment for this fast growing month. As the heat arrives in June and nutrients subside, the growth slows. In past years we have always caught up by Memorial Day and stayed ahead of the mowing throughout the summer. We look forward to another wonderful summer in our beautiful Lakewood Community. Enjoy. From the Boardroom
Kathleen Heydon, Outgoing Board President
On April 5th, 2022 Lakewood honored 65 volunteers and their guests, serving on 11 Standing committees. Chef Molly and her staff prepared an outstanding dinner complete with beautiful tables and attentive servers. But the best part for me was to see the hugs, handshakes, and hear the chatter and laughter....it was amazing to all be together again. All Committees of the Association, whether they are of a business or social nature are considered a vital resource to LPOA. The purpose of these committees is to give an opportunity for residents to participate in the overall betterment of Lakewood, to provide an avenue of communication between residents, the General Manager, and the Board of Directors, to accept specific tasks and responsibilities assigned to them by the Board and to prepare recommendations for improvement.
gives you a more in-depth description and duties of each committee. If you have any interest in joining a committee, please go to the LPOA office, request a Committee Interest form, fill it out and Nichole will make sure it is shared with the Committee chair. The committees choose their members. Our committees fulfill essential roles within our community and help the board accomplish the association’s goals effectively and efficiently. Your Board of Directors would like to say to those who dedicated selflessly their time and talents, THANK YOU for making Lakewood a better place.
Wow, summer is almost here, on May 28 the pools will open, weather permitting and it’s also National There are 4 kinds of committees which include Administrative, Hamburger Day! These committees follow our Covenants, Conditions Restrictions, and By-Laws. They are ongoing and permanent. Standing Advisory Committees were established for a specific service and purpose. They include the following: Insurance, Finance, Facilities Development (FDC), Activities, Lake Use, Construction Materials Standards, and Food and Beverage. JEWELRY DESIGN AND PHOTOGRAPHY
One of our featured Lakewood artists is Rick Scaletty. Rick has exhibited his underwater photography in the Argyle Gallery twice in the past and has participated in group shows also. It was interesting to discover that Rick also designs unique jewelry for sale on Etsy and Facebook. Rick started making jewelry in college, but was interrupted by life, family, career, and his photography, which found him traveling and diving all over the world for colorful, detailed photos of sea life. Rick has made it a passion to show people the natural world and encourage them to become better stewards of our planet. After retirement, on annual retreats to Arizona, Rick revived his love of jewerly design, using native stones, silver, and gold.

The Ripples // June 2022
In Arizona, he began to showcase his jewelry at an annual fundraiser for the Jewelry Arts. At home in Lee’s Summit, he held a show at the Blue Heron and sold his pieces at other local, jewelry arts shops. Rick prefers the rich Southwestern colors of turquoise for his jewelry and, of course, designs special pieces for his wife and for gifts. Rick and his wife, Kathy, have lived in Lakewood since 1985.
I envision my jewelry as an expression of our relationships with one another and our beautiful planet. You may view jewelry by Rick Scaletty at www.etsy.com/shop/RickScalettyStudio, and on Facebook at Rick Scaletty Jewelry.

Contact Steve Bertken at SailLakewood@gmail.com to fill out the 2022 Membership form. The 2022 Members Welcome and access passcode will be emailed after signup. Online Payment options: PayPals, Venmo, Check or Cash.
Crestview Dairy is a 120-year-old historic landmark and private estate including 31 acres of beautiful landscaped countryside. We will stroll around 8 truly authentic buildings surrounded by 100-year-old trees, spectacular views, private walkways, and a 3500 sq. ft deck overlooking Crestview Lake. Hal Oppenheimer, the owner, will give us the history of Crestview and how he and his wife, New York Natives, became interested in purchasing the property in 1983. Guests are always welcome.

2021 Common Violations
Sean Bachtel, LPOA Director of Community Relations Your regularly scheduled Community Service Report will return next month. Meanwhile, I’d like to share with you some of our most common violations. We’ll use 2021 numbers for this purpose. They’re pretty self explanatory, but Grass Violations are for lawn height, Property Maintenance is for the condition of the exterior of the property, Improper Storage is anything that shouldn’t be outside or anything not neatly stored in its place, Parking is typically trailers but can be improperly registered vehicles as well, and Boat Registration is for expired or non-existent registration stickers on a watercraft. A helpful bit of information - Boat Stickers and Grass are 90% of our current violations as I write this article in mid-May. I hope this helps everyone understand some of the expectations of the Association.
