MKT-06089-0618 Tracking # 1-745751 (Exp. 8/20)

August From the General Manager, Mark Reid

Wow, summer is going fast. A little over 30 days and we will be celebrating Labor Day. This has been a wonderful summer with a mix of sunshine and rain, reminding us that the Missouri we know and love will forever be unpredictable. However, our common ground and parks have been in fantastic shape as a result. Additionally, it’s always a pleasure to have a full lake throughout the summer. We still have the Pool Party and Concert on the Rock to look forward to before activities wind down and the kids go back school. Looking forward, I want to note that the June Consumer Price Index (CPI) jumped to 5.4% for year over year inflation. Our benchmark CPI is taken from July report which will be issued by mid-August. If the current trend holds, we could be looking at a little over 6% when we take the benchmark index and use it in our annual calculation for the following years dues, otherwise known as the Maximum Annual Assessment. It has been a little concerning watching Homes, Cars, Energy and many other consumer goods rise rapidly this year. I mentioned this earlier in the year and I want to keep our members alerted to this so that it doesn’t come as a shock this fall and our members can have some advance planning for their 2022 budgets.

From the Boardroom Lakewood Property Owners Association

Kathleen Heydon, Board President

Board of Directors’ Meeting

Actions taken July 8, 2021

I have always perceived Lakewood as a “Family Friendly” association. However, some of the pictures, texts, and phone calls I received regarding the 4th of July might indicate otherwise. We are a multigenerational community with a vibrant spirit and active lifestyle but we need to be respectful to each other.

Approved • Staff was instructed to draft a

Lakewood’s lakes are hardly like the Lake of the Ozarks with 54,000 acres where you can find a cove and party 24/7 with adults who want to party. Lakewood’s lakes have roughly 365 acres without the privilege of finding private coves to party. Boaters are exposed to all the residents living around the lake and people on the lake with families.

pending amendment to Rules and Regulation 7.060, Signage • The Board took a neutral stance in regard to the Woods of Chapel Ridge preliminary development plan • Pending Amendment to Rules and Regulations, Article II, 2.020, Registration of Boats • Direct the Falls Parcel to provide shrub trimming and snow removal only to 4600 NE Dick Howser Circle • Authorized third party audit of 32 boat slips at random on each marina • Accept G.A.A.P ASC 606 Rule Adoption

Please be courteous to other boaters and residents living in Lakewood. They also have rights.

We want everyone to have fun on the lake but it sure seems like some lines are being crossed. Our association does not have any rules to enforce or define “Family Friendly” but we would hope all residents would use common sense in regards to what our families and guests are seeing and hearing on the lake.

I would like to acknowledge the Activities Committee for planning “Family Friendly” activities for our association. Your time, talents, and selfless ways are appreciated and noticed. I realize you took time from your families to volunteer your precious time to help Lakewood residents have a great 4th of July. I know we also appreciate the countless hours Community Services, Maintenance, pool staff, office staff, and supporting staff, took from their families to ensure a safe, fun, environment for our residents. Safety is our number one priority on our lake. I continue to hear about boating violations probably due to a lack of knowledge. I would suggest you go to our website, LPOA.com, login, click on Lakes, and review the rules on Boater Safety and take the Lake Education course. It doesn’t take long and it’s important information.

LAKEWOOD GARDEN CLUB HONORS OUTSTANDING SCHOLARS!

Lakewood Garden Club Honors Outstanding Scholars! The Lakewood Garden Club resumed its in-person meetings in May and honored two outstanding students from Lee’s Summit North High School. As always, choosing among so many talented and deserving applicants was a challenge. This year’s winners, Madison Goff and Julia Welsh will each receive $500 scholarships to attend their colleges of choice in September.

Madison Goff may be familiar to Lakewood residents because she’s been the head

lifeguard at the main pool. There was a dynamism about her application that portrayed a determined and focused student intent on improving the quality of healthcare. While still in high school Madison earned dual credits from Longview Community College and the University of Missouri in KC. Next fall she’ll be attending the University of Kansas where she’ll pursue the pharmaceutical sciences and health science management. Madison is a true scholar-athlete who not only swims, but also plays soccer and tennis. According to her teachers, Madison has a strong work-ethic, is passionate about her many interests and still both humble and kind. For all these reasons and more, the Scholarship Committee is proud to support Madison’s future goals.

Our second recipient, Julia Welsh, is just as distinguished. Julia’s application portrayed a future environmentalist, determined to make a difference. Her interest stemmed from a class trip to the James A. Reed Memorial Wildlife Area, here in Lee’s Summit. There she was introduced to the lake ecosystem and the various species that call it home. Next fall, Julia will pursue her dream of becoming a wildlife biologist and conservationist at Truman State University. Julia’s recommendations revealed not only an outstanding student but a Renaissance person, with broad cultural interests in the arts. The Choral Director at Lee’s Summit North, described her as having a beautiful alto voice and as an accomplished violist excelling in sight-reading and sight-singing. But, he saved his greatest praise, for her outstanding character and sweet spirit. The Garden Club is proud to honor and support Madison and Julia as they pursue their dreams of improving healthcare and conserving and sustaining the environment. It seems only proper to mention that Janet Gerken, our beloved chairperson of the Scholarship Committee, passed recently. It was she who spent countless hours contacting the high schools and finding our applicants. She, along with her tech-savvy husband Eric, also streamlined our selection methods, ensuring that the most deserving students were recognized by the Garden Club. Our Committee, Edie Sledek, Kaye Vance and Carol McCavitt, want everyone to know how much she will be missed. Janet was very enthusiastic about both our winners. Without Janet, we might never have found Madison and Julia.

Dr. Bruno Zwerenz, M.D. Lakewood Artist Exhibit We welcome Dr. Bruno Zwerenz, M.D. back to the Argyle Gallery. Having displayed his art in 2019, Dr. Zwerenz is happy to share his pieces once again. Dr. Zwerenz grew up in Frankfort, Germany and could be found skiing in the Tatra Mountains of Slovakia and apprenticing with an old-styled German Professor in the art of painting. He made his way to the United States and was immediately drafted into the U.S. military where he was based back in his home town, Frankfort, Germany. Education was important to Bruno and he started taking classes while drafted through the University of Maryland and University of Illinois abroad.

"Go! Go with your thoughts and feelings and try to express them on screens or on a canvas. What you create will never be taken away." Having studied psychology, Dr. Zwerenz soon after pursued post-grad when he was accepted into University of Missouri, School of Medicine. Having returned from

14

The Ripples // August 2021

the military, Dr. Zwerenz received his M.D. and became a certified Psychiatrist. He channeled his creativity learned early in life and painted throughout Medical School which was a nice break from rigorous studying. Dr. Zwerenz’s approach to painting is self-guided by his own stream of conscious in the moment. He is able to expresses his present internal state through landscapes that are realistic and/ or are made up scenarios. All of his paintings can tell as much of a story as the viewer wants to perceive. More recently, abstract techniques have taken over Dr. Zwerenz’s pieces, some of which are inspired by German poetry. What intrigues Dr. Zwerenz the most about art is how subjective the medium can be. “I love the challenge of understanding and interpreting art. I want to give that as a gift to others as they enjoy my paintings.” When asked what advice Bruno would give to young artists he says, “Go! Go with your thoughts and feelings and try to express them on screens or on a canvas. What you create will never be taken away.”
