GOLF NEWS Jhonattan Vegas, the Venezuelan golf eminence won the Argentina Open Jhonattan Vegas wins the 105 Argentina Open and becomes the first Venezuelan in winning such prestige tournament. Jhonattan played this Sunday (12/12/2010) a round of 71 (+1) shots to accumulate 270 (-10) for the four days of the tournament, and win with an advantage of 6 shots on its more nearby competitor the Argentine Andrés Romero (-4). In a day where the golf facilities closing rumors in Venezuela were on everyone’s lips, Jhonattan Vegas demonstrated with high standards the quality of the Venezuelan golf. The combat, disputed in the meadows of the Jockey Club of Buenos Aires, was controlled with authority by the native leader. Vegas comes from humble origin and now is complicated for him to be coached. “We come from a humble family that had always to work hard to achieve things in life. We never were a family that had it all, but my dad always gave us everything that he considered enough for us to have the opportunity to utilize the golf sport”, affirmed the golfer. When they asked if the golf is a middle-class sport, Vegas said that “we (society) have created that stigma because in reality we have not done anything to carry golf to the people. The only people that have had the privilege to be able to utilize the golf installations are the ones that have purchasing power”. One of the things that I aspire to do is to carry this sport to the all the people and let them know a lot more about it” He finalized saying after his great triumph. Jhonattan Vegas is the first Venezuelan golfer in the history who will play in the PGA Tour of the United States and without doubt the best Venezuelan player in the history of our golf so far.

Appleby named 2010 PGA TOUR Comeback Player of the Year

One year after finishing outside the top 125 for the first time since his rookie season in 1996, Australia’s Stuart Appleby was honored as the 2010 PGA TOUR Comeback Player of the Year. Appleby earned the award via a vote by his fellow competitors following a season that included a historic final-round 59 en route to victory at The Greenbrier Classic. “Congratulations to Stuart Appleby for being voted the PGA TOUR Comeback Player of the year by his peers,” said PGA TOUR Commissioner Tim Finchem. “Stuart showed great perseverance in returning to the winner’s circle at The Greenbrier Classic in a historic manner.” Appleby was selected for PGA TOUR Comeback Player of the Year over Arjun Atwal and Rocco Mediate. Appleby, who has represented the International Team at The Presidents Cup on five occasions, struggled in 2009, as he was not eligible for the PGA TOUR Playoffs for the FedExCup and finished 137th on the money list after just one top-10 finish in 25 starts. Appleby utilized a one-time, top 25 career money exemption in 2010 and worked overtime to regain his form. Between May and August, he played 13 consecutive weeks, with The Greenbrier Classic victory inside that 13-week stretch. The win was his ninth career title, and his final-round 59 was the fifth in PGA TOUR history and just the second-ever posted during a final round. On the season, Appleby totaled three top 10s in 31 starts, finished 38th on the money list and played his way into the first three Playoff events. Appleby also had international success in 2010, winning the JBWere Masters in Australia in November. -- Dustin Johnson and Ian Poulter are the winners of the Shark Shootout on Sunday, shooting a 13-under 59 in the scramble format to beat the Northern Ireland duo Darren Clarke and Graeme McDowell by just two shots. Dustin and Ian got the lead with birdies on their first four holes and had no problem the rest of the day in finishing at 30-under 186. Clarke and McDowell (59) couldn’t come closer than two strokes. The 12 teams in the tournament hosted by Greg Norman at Tiburon Golf Club played modified alternate shot in the first round and better ball in the second. Johnson and Poulter split $750,000 from the $3 million purse. Johnson and Poulter, who played for the rival U.S. and European Ryder Cup teams two months ago, made the perfect duo in the threeformat tournament. “They kind of pushed us around,” Poulter said. “You know what, making the birdies they did, it was kind of good for us to see good shot after good shot, and good putts going in. It’s a lot easier to hole putts when your playing partners do.” Funk-Perry and Kelly-Stricker started the day in front by a shot, but both teams started slowly. Funk-Perry made a birdie, then eight straight pars. Kelly-Stricker had three birdies on the front. With Johnson putting first in the scramble format, Poulter took advantage, perhaps nowhere more so than on the par-4 15th. Holding a two-shot lead, Poulter knocked his approach to 7 feet after Clarke had put his close. After Johnson missed his putt, Poulter made his to keep the two-shot advantage. “It was definitely a lot harder than it looked,” Johnson said. “Standing there we were like, ‘Oh, this is a piece of cake.’” “Ian is one of the best chippers of the ball in the world, and he was the man for the job,” McDowell said. “He was pretty clutch today. He played great.”

Course Etiquette By Teo Perez

here are no more important rules in Golf than those dealing with etiquette. Golf is a game for gentlemen, which means that every player carries heavy responsibilities to himself, to his opponents and partners, to the course, to the rules, and to the game. Courtesy and consideration for others are factors in golf – way ahead of winning. The game is essentially a contest between the player and the golf course, rather than a conflict between people. When a golfer hits a tee shot out-ofbounds, he will take another ball out of his pocket and play again before his opponents or playing partner have driven. That’s not only against the rules and poor etiquette, its lousy strategy. By re-playing in proper order- in this case last-you give yourself a chance to settle down, regain your composure and plan the second drive with care. Analyze your shot while the other player is preparing to play will help improve amounts of time on the course. Unrepaired ball marks not only spoil putting but increase the cost of maintaining greens, repair every indentation you make on a putting surface. Once you have putted, it’s a nice gesture to fix any spike marks of scuffs you may have caused or noticed for the benefit of players behind. Common courtesy demands that you give every player the opportunity to do his best. Perhaps the best expression of this is standing quietly, out of vision and without any physical movement, while other golfers play their shots. Never hit the ball if there is even the possibility that a player ahead of you hasn’t moved out of range. There is not more frustrating sensation to walk into a bunker and find your ball impossibly situated in some careless foot print. The absence of a rake is no excuse for not smoothing the sand. You can take care of the marks easily with the back of a club. Remember to replace your divots or fill them up with sand. When you handle the flagstick, do so gently, being particularly careful not to let it damage the sides of the hole. As you start to look for a lost ball check the time on your watch. The rules allow you a five-minute search, and honesty demands that you do not exceed it. If you have lost a ball or are playing slower than the group behind, let them play through and get them off your back. Meeting one’s obligations as a golfer is impossible without knowledge and understanding of the rules of golf. Every act on the golf course should be in keeping with the etiquette demanded by the game. “You miss 100% of the shots you never take” Wayne Gretzky

Golf Management By Teo Perez

laying a great round comes with a good golf course management. It is good to know how to have a great golf swing, but without golf course management there is not a game plan. Did you noticed a golf professional talking with his caddie about the next golf shot? You can rest assured that they were not talking about anything impractical, but discussing what they did during the practice round and previous results. Course management is what they are talking. Every shot is pin-point to the nearest yard. If you want to play a good golf shot, you have to know your exact distance and what type of shot you decided to executed. Good golfers always excel over the competition by using this technique. If you donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t know about distance, lay ( up or down ), wind and other factors, then you are giving every other golfer and edge. If you think that all you need is a great golf swing with a good set of clubs, you should rethink your game again. The golfer with good course management do not need to out-distance their competitor. They just need to place the ball somewhere in the fairway for the next shot. Practice course management and your handicap will come down to a single digit. Make sure you learn how far you hit the different clubs in your bag. When choosing a golf shot over a sand trap? How is the wind affecting my ball fly? Do I play a pitching wedge or a nine iron? Or I want to hit a seven iron? In other words, do I want to fly the ball into the green, or bump and run the shot into the green. Course management requires the golfer to pay attention to holes that are next to the hole that they are playing. Need to be constantly looking for good ball position for the next hole before teeing up the ball. Checking where the pin placement is, way before you hit the fairway will definitely help on club selection. Take a good look at the golf terrain and conditions that you are playing in and pay attention to golf holes that you walk by. Knowing the terrain well in advance will make it a lot easier on golf club selection and help drive confidence going forward.

The reason for this is an excellent school system that encourages students to choose between an array of sports being Golf one of them, also the existence of public golf course that make it easy for kids and the average Joes no play this beautiful game. The story is the complete opposite in South America with a small percentage of golfers compared to North America, with only a few public Golf courses, this region is mostly predominated by Upscale Country Clubs with strict admissions policies. But the passion that golf transmits does not see social status or golf club memberships, I am saying this become the new wave of Latin American golfers are not upscale silver spoon fed youngsters, but in contrast low income hard working individuals, most of them learning the game of Golf starting as caddies, the pioneer of this new Latin American breed of players is Carlos Franco from Paraguay who won 3 events on the PGA Tour and was also a Presidents Cup member, Angel Cabrera from Argentina who only had

2 victories but they happened to be 2 of the toughest and most prestigious tournaments in Golf I’m talking about the U.S Open and The masters, Camilo Villegas from Colombia who’s also a multiple winner on tour and a Presidents Cup former player has been the moving force for the new age hip players for youngsters to follow with his histrionic combinations and rock star attitude, In 2008 another Argentinean appeared on tour to make a big statement, with his swing that looks more like a piece of art that should be kept on a museum he won the Zurich Classic of New Orleans and became the 2008 PGA Tour Rookie of the year, I am talking about Andres Pigu Romero. This year the Latin American crew has 3 new members 2 graduating from the Nationwide Tour and the other one thru the toughest graduation process “Q-School”. Finishing /the on the Nationwide Tour Money List we have Jhonattan Vegas who’s the first Venezuelan who earned his PGA Tour card, he won The Wichita Open trailing by 7 strokes on the last day in an impressive man-

The least known of the pack is Brazil’s Alex Rocha who played on the Asian Tour the 2010 season and won his spot by finishing in the top 25 of the “Q-School” last stage making it completing the pack of 6 Latin American players to be competing on the 2011 PGA Tour. As we can see golf in Latin America is growing on an unprecedented pace and we expect even better things for next generations to come.

GC. Excellent performance in the Venezuelan National Professional Championship, can you tell me briefly what worked for you on that weekend? AA. Well, in that tournament practically my whole game was very sharp, I think I missed a couple of easy putts that should have gone in, but even though I came up in 2nd place, I took a lot of positive thoughts and vibes out of it and of course thanks a lot to all the fans that came to see all the professionals play that week, specially my group where I was playing with Jhonattan Vegas. This tournament basically reflected all the hard work and practice I’ve put in throughout the year (2010). GC. Now that you are spending more time in the South Florida area, how have you been adapting in this new country and what do you think is different from living in Venezuela? AA. I think Miami and its surroundings are spectacular in every aspect: golfing, family, social, labor, etc. You have an ease of many golf courses of a high caliber and perfect practice facilities to prepare yourself and help you perform at the highest level needed for golfers to make it to the PGA Tour. I think USA and Venezuela are not comparable, they are both very nice countries but with two very different cultures. I would always love my native country but I can not deny that I am perfectly happy living in Miami and getting ready to make it to the PGA Tour anytime soon.

GC. In which golf tours are you playing right now and what are you going to be playing in 2011? AA. At this moment I am playing a lot of tournaments in the South Florida area, mostly in the Fuzion Tour formely known as the Minorleague Tour. I also play the Tour of the Americas which some tournaments are with the Challenge Tour from Europe, the Venezuelan Tour and some Monday qualifiers for the Nationwide Tour and the PGA Tour. Next year in 2011, I’m going to focus more on the Egolf Tour which will be in the Carolinas, I’m also going to keep playing most of the Monday qualifiers to get prepared for the 2011 PGA Q-school at the end of the year. GC. Do you consider the Omega World Cup of Golf in China last year together with Jhonattan Vegas the best golf experience in your career? AA. Absolutely yes, the tournament at Mission Hills in 2009 was the best professional experience I’ve had in my golf career, because I had the opportunity to share with the best golfers in the world and realize that I am not very far from sharing week after week with them. We also did a tremendous performance representing Venezuela and proving our high professional golf level getting the 12th spot without doing anything special with our game, in my opinion I think that we had a big chance to be among the top 5 countries in the world in that tournament. GC. Ok Alfredo we already saw Jhonattan Vegas from Venezuela make it to the PGA Tour, how this will impact all the international golfers that are trying to make it as well? AA. Yes, of course Jhonattan in the PGA tour is of a great inspiration to all the international and Venezuelan golf players, I’m sure that next year we will have more support from the Venezuelan and Latin American companies for the development of golf.

GC. Even though the economic situation, do you currently have any sponsors? AA. Right now, I do not have any sponsors; however, I had several talks with companies which I believe a great opportunity will come very soon and which will help me boost my career in 2011. GC. What’s the most difficult thing as a golfer like you would have to do in order to pursuit his dream? AA. I think that in life nothing is easy, you always have to fight hard and have a lot of consistency and perseverance to achieve your goals in life, the whole thing is that you have to give your 100% every time and of course, have people supporting you, in my case, my family, brothers, coaches, and friends which I thank God every day to have them in my life. It is also super important to have economic stability to cover all the expenses that are needed at the beginning to reach beyond that “small step” in order to make it to the PGA Tour. GC. Where do you see Alfredo Adrian 5 years from now? AA. Well, I see myself having a happy life living with a beautiful family in the United States, and being ranked within the top 50 best golfers of the world, very thankful that I accomplished my goal and sharing that with all the people who cares for me and have been very supportive throughout my golf career. GC. What are your goals for 2011? AA. My goal is to win any tournament in the Egolf Tour, several in the Minorleague Tour, qualify into some Nationwide Tour events through Monday qualifiers and of course participate in the PGA Q_ School at the end of the year.

GC. What’s your favorite golf course? AA. My favorite course is the Olazabal course at Mission Hills China, and I also like Augusta National even though I have not played there yet. GC. Favorite golfer? AA. Tiger Woods. GC. Are you superticious? Is there anything you do before or in the middle of the round? AA. Actually I’m not superstitious at all, things that I usually do sometimes when the round is not going well is that I change the ball or my glove. GC. Any hobbies? AA. I like to go to the gym a lot and to the beach. GC ok Alfredo thank you very much for your time we wish the best in your future, do you want to give thanks to anyone? AA. Yes, I would like to give thanks to my wife Maria Andreina for being there with me every time and for the support in my golf career in the good and the bad times. The Sun: “Enemy of the skin?

Has recently reported a significant increase in skin diseases generated by the sun, which is due in large part to the widespread idea that tanning is synonymous with beauty. At present, growing evidence of damage to the skin by ultraviolet radiation (UV) makes the use of sunscreens for daily use is strictly necessary complement in the routine skin care. The sun emits three different types of radiation: UVA, UVB and UVC. Those who penetrate the atmosphere are UVA (ultraviolet-aging), which degrade collagen and elating, thus generating fine lines, wrinkles, blemishes and uneven skin tone. For its part, UVB rays (ultraviolet Burning) are the main cause of sunburn and skin cancer. UV radiation has a cumulative effect on the skin that occurs over time, so it is very important to develop preventive behaviors, such as daily use of sunscreen. Being aware of the importance of preventing the damage caused by the deterioration of the environment and combines it with good nutrition, hydration, home care, treatments and exercises; we are working on ourselves to look and feel good.

The Three most common injuries in golf

Back pain

The number one complaint amongst golfers. This is a problem caused by multiple conditions, extending from a strained back muscle and misalignment of a vertebra, to a pinched nerve. That is why being regularly checked by a specialist is so important. However, if you do happen to hurt your back, apply ice on the injury as quickly as possible for no more than 15 minutes intervals. This will help to reduce the inflammation and slow down the release of toxins by the injured cells. You can reapply the ice every hour for additional relief as necessary.

Golfers elbow

This is an inflammation and irritation of the tendon that attaches the forearm muscles to the elbow. The treatment for this is simple, for the first couple of days you need to rest and ice the elbow in order to reduce the load and inflammation. Again, ice is never to be used for more than 15 minutes at a time, unless otherwise advised by a specialist. On the fourth or fifth day stretching and strengthening exercises for the forearm and elbow should be started. Finally, getting a golfers elbow brace, will help you rest the tendon and will help you get back to swinging your club sooner. You should even continue to use the elbow brace when playing to reduce the risk of reinjury.

Shoulder pain

The shoulder is a complex joint, composed of many muscles, tendons and ligaments. Golfers mostly suffer from rotator cuff tendonitis or rotator cuff impingement. In either case, it is important that you get plenty of rest and contact your doctor to ensure that you don’t make the problem worse. The rotator cuff muscle group consists of four muscles and their tendons that move and stabilize the shoulder. Due to repetitive swinging of the club, the tendons tend to get irritated and begin to swell, causing irritation and pain.
