Spring/Summer 2018

A Letter from the Head of School James Milford

Board of Trustees 2018-2019 Members: Sarah Bascom Kimberly Crowell Allison Deison

Dear Maclay Community,

Chris Dudley Kiki Dunton

As the sun washes over our dear ‘ole Maclay, we are enjoying the energy that summer camps bring and the building excitement as we anticipate starting our second half-century together. This past year was a celebration of the thousands of lives impacted by Maclay School. From the Founders Day celebration with the entire community and alumni across the nation, to the inaugural class of Leadership Maclay, with 20 of our alumni returning to campus for a two-day workshop, it was a remarkable year. We entered the second year of our strategic plan where we continue building partnerships in Tallahassee, expanding development opportunities for faculty, and focusing on increasing enrollment and giving priorities for the School. Maclay finished her first half-century in a position of strength providing great momentum to forge ahead into the next 50 years.

Meredith Hunter

The Golden Jubilee in March not only was a celebration with nearly 500 of our Maclay friends and family, but it also launched a school-wide initiative called iTHINK. The iTHINK initiative will advance our curriculum, classrooms, and campus as we focus on offering our students opportunities needed to for the 21st century while working through the lenses of (T) technology, (H) hands-on, (I) innovation, (N) networking, and (K) knowledge as we prepare our students to be inspired, determined, and unstoppable.

When you arrive on campus next time, you will also notice a much more secure campus. Beginning this fall, there will be restricted access to the Maclay Road entrance, so if you are visiting, please say hello to our security team Officer Ford and Officer Mitchell at our new gatehouse at the Maclay Road entrance. As you read through the pages of the Virtu, I hope you enjoy the many wonderful things our faculty and students are up to on and off our beautiful 100-acre campus. Go Marauders! Yours,

Technology, Hands-On Innovation, Network and Knowledge

At this year’s Golden Jubilee: Maclay Auction, Mr. Milford introduced the iTHINK initiative, a transformative plan catapulting our Classrooms, Curriculum, and Campus through hands-on, experiential learning, K-12 programming, and state-of-the-art science labs and services to prepare our students for a world we haven’t even imagined yet. During the next several years, the Maclay community will see monumental advancements in the areas of engineering, technology, science, and the arts that will set the course for the next 50 years.

New Classrooms This summer, a new architecturally innovative, environmentally friendly Research Center will open on campus. Through the generous and inspirational leadership of our lead donors, Mike and Kelly Beck, the Beck Family Research Center will house three hands-on classrooms where students can apply skills, conduct research, and explore interdisciplinary connections between the Sciences, the Arts, and the STEM fields. The Marie E. Krafft Biomedical Research Laboratory will provide space for student-led research and will house our new Biomedical Concentration. Additional leadership gifts by Lawton & Beth Langford and Cecilia & Peter Loeb, M.D. made this innovative program and facility launch a reality.

Expanded Curriculum An expanded K-12 curriculum, programs, and staffing additions will provide our students with project-based and experiential learning while teaching critical and strategic thinking skills. The addition of Upper School Academic Concentrations in the fields of BioMed, Core Science, and Engineering and Robotics offer our students opportunities to follow their passion and take part in real-life experiences to help them prepare for college and beyond. A new Lower School Computer Science Instructor and full-time Middle School instructor will provide more classes and clubs in our younger divisions.

Transforming Campus The Center for Innovation and Students Services will be the largest facility addition that Maclay School has undertaken in decades. The multi-purpose building will shift the center of campus and become a core hub of student activity, providing state-of-the-art Science Labs, College Counseling, and a Student Commons for collaboration and gatherings. FROM the CLASSROOM and BEYOND Holocaust Remembrance Last summer, Upper School English teacher Lauren Fantle joined a Holocaust Educators trip to Poland. Not only did she return with new ideas for her Holocaust Literature and Film class, but she also found a passion for sharing education ideas with others. In November, she presented at the Florida Council of Independent Schools conference and also offered the opportunity and support to other teachers at Maclay School to collaborate together across divisions and different curriculums. Many teachers jumped on board and on April 19th and 20th, 18 different classes displayed student projects in Maclay’s first Holocaust Remembrance Showcase. One example was 8th-grade teacher Laurie Coburn who had her students participate in a semester long project Heroes of the Holocaust: Conflict and Compromise, which they then displayed at a History Fair. Guest judges included Barbara Goldstein, Executive Director of Holocaust Education Resource Council (HERC), Linda Davey, Avi Wygodski (HERC Board Members), Dr. Monte Finkelstein, Former Dean of History at TCC, and Fantle (photo right.) The students shared their research through different presentations such as exhibits, websites, music, and a puppet show and later participated in the Showcase.

In the Upper School, Fantle’s Holocaust Literature and Film class created biographies of teenagers, and they even planted a memorial garden. Kyle Maurey’s Art students used their talents to paint daffodils on canvas in a cross-curricular project. The Art department also used Gustav Klimt’s “Woman in Gold” as inspiration for both art pieces and the central theme of the annual Celebration of the Arts. 6

THEMATIC UNIT FOR 6TH GRADE The 6th grade class participated in a thematic unit inspired by an Aristotle quote, “The whole is greater than the sum of its parts.” After reading Frank the Mighty and learning about the Space Race versus the importance of collaboration in order to achieve goals, 6th graders built and launched rockets that were scaled models of past space explorations while learning how to calculate angles, altitude, and speed. They studied the future of space exploration and engaged in debates and discussions about space related issues. The rockets were placed on display in the library during the Celebration of the Arts on April 6th.

Risk and Rewards The Upper School Risk and Rewards class had a new co-teacher this semester, Head of School Mr. Milford. Along with Lawton Langford and Bob McClure, Mr. Milford led a group of seniors through various business projects and brought in a wide-range of speakers including: money managers, alum Katherine Kirby and investor Ash Williams, bankers Emory Mayfield, Hancock Whitney Bank and Bill Smith, Capital City Bank, business owners Laura Johnson of Cotton Colors, Jen Simpson and Alexis Woodcock, Get Fit, CPA Winston Howell, and Healthcare CEO Mark O’Bryant were among the speakers. The class not only engaged students in real world business scenarios but was a great opportunity to learn and network. 7

GUIDANCE Operation: Spring Break

Before spring break, our Guidance Department teamed up with Tallahassee Memorial Heathcare, Tallahassee Police Department, Leon County Sheriff’s Office, and MADD for Operation Spring Break. The community program targets high school students to remind them of the dangers of distracted driving. Seniors, Maggie Chase, Harrison Obrecht, Kobie Lawson, Raymond Zins, and Lauryn Parker staged a reenactment of a drunk driving scene that even included Life Flight landing on the field.

COFFEE TALK Drug and Alcohol Awareness

The Guidance Office also hosted an evening and morning session with MADD and the Leon County Sherriff just for parents about Drug and Alcohol awareness that corresponded with the student session.

Signature Series: Girls Leadership & Success Series Boys Champions Series Senior Edition

The Girls Leadership & Success Series and Boys Champions Series welcomed Amy Wells, brand strategist for Chilck-Fil-A and FAMU assistant baseball coach Anthony Robinson. Both programs for seniors focused on the next steps and challenges that college will bring. 10

MPO Maclay Parents Organization The Maclay Parents Organization is a vital part of our community, not only providing events for our students and parents, but it is also an avenue for our parents to volunteer. Events in the spring included the Annual Mother Son Bowling, Father/Daughter Dance, Mornings for Mom and Senior Mothers Luncheon to name a few. In addition, MPO hosted a fabulous Teacher Appreciation Week which including a luncheon, a Lucky Goat Coffee morning, and a special Growth Mindset Professional Development speaker for our teachers. At the end of the year luncheon, Mr. Milford honored two-year President Nina Davis and welcomed the new MPO chair Angela Gibbs.

Mother/Son Bowling MPO hosted the 3rd annual Mother/Son Bowling Challenge at Capital Lanes Bowling alley. PreK-3-6th grade boys and their mothers spent an afternoon bonding over bowling, games, and laser tag while enjoying tons of pizza and snacks.

Father/Daughter Dance

This year’s candy land themed Father/Daughter dance was a fun-filled night where K-5th girls danced the night away with friends, dads, and father figures alike. Thank you to MPO for hosting another dance giving fathers’ and daughters’ memories of a lifetime.

#ThankATeacher MPO hosted the week-long Maraudercators Matter week in May. Sophomore Ansley Payne, creator of Heritage Baking Company, provided sweet treats for the professional development meeting. Students also sent in notes and posted social media thank you messages during the week to show teachers how much they are appreciated. Ansley Payne, Heritage Baking Company 11

LOWER SCHOOL NEWS TROPICANA SPEECH WINNER Annika Ghai proudly represented Maclay School at the Leon County Tropicana Public Speaking Competition. Her speech, “Life as a Hufflepuff,” won the award for Most Original Topic. Because she was the county winner last year, in this year’s competition, she was also the emcee and had the added responsibility of introducing and interviewing the 35 other contestants.

Talent Show Children’s Librarian, Miss Laura Armstrong and team assembled a show for our Lower School students to show off their talents to friends and family. Ventriloquists, comedians, singers, musicians, athletes, dancers and more all graced the stage. Our Lower School students are awesome!

Family Activity Night 12

This spring, Lower School hosted a Family Activity Night to showcase the curriculum and project-based learning going on every day in the classrooms. Families had over a dozen sessions to choose including building boats, math games, and activities, in art, PE, and music.

3rd Grade Parade of States and Amazing American Museum Lower School students explored history with a lot of creativity and collaboration. Third grade researched individual states and then put on an official parade through the halls. First graders also took to the stage dressed as an Amazing American. The project-based unit involved research techniques and allowed students to work on their presentation skills.

100 Day Celebration How do you practice counting? You celebrate 100 days of school – or if you are in 1st grade you celebrate 101 days! 13

MIDDLE SCHOOL NEWS

NASA Trip Cameron Barton’s 6th grade science students enjoyed the Earth/Space unit with a class trip to Kennedy Space Center. On March 26th, students experienced a shuttle launch with a motion based simulator and slept on the floor inside the new $100 million home of the Space Shuttle Atlantis. The facility tells the incredible story of NASA’s 30-year Space Shuttle Program.

SHARK TANK 14

Mrs. Coburn hosted a real “Shark Tank” where students were grouped together in teams and worked to create and present a business plan. The teams faced a tough panel of judges and had to answer questions about their business proposal. Finalists presented in a formal setting in the Webster Center a few weeks later to their classmates. The invention competition gave 8th graders an opportunity to collaborate, create, and dream.

Academic Pep Rally This semester, Middle School hosted the first Academic Pep Rally celebrating top achievers in band, art, Latin, service, and academic competitions like the Geography Bee and the History Fair.

Jr. Beta Service Club The Jr. Beta Service Club had a very busy semester with projects like preparing meals at the homeless shelter and working downtown at Pets Alive. The group helped the Humane Society at the pet adoption booth for the day on April 21.

Archeological Dig Mrs. Kutter’s 6th Grade World Geography class had a hands-on “Out of Africa Genographic Human Migration” lesson. The class used maps and data on the National Geographic website to create their own maps retracing the steps early humans took out of Africa and then all over the world. These maps are great because they are updated as new research is published. One such article about finding 11,500 year old human remains in Alaska was published in January and was added to the map as a data point. Parent, David Avant provided some actual artifacts that the students dug up in the mock site which was created from a Faculty Excellence Grant last year. 1515
