A Letter from the Head of School
Board of Trustees 2015-2016 Rip Kirby, Chairman Members:
Dear Maclay Community, I am so pleased to share with you our summer issue of the Maclay School Virtu. Our faculty and students are enjoying a well-deserved change of pace. This past year has been an amazing time on campus and in the Maclay community. Amid many new programs and conversations I was so impressed to see how our talented faculty and staff continue to reach, connect, and inspire our students. This year saw a little more travel than normal as we seek to better connect with our alumni. We visited two cities, and we have four more on the horizon to share the current Maclay story and reconnect our talented alumni to the initiatives and students at Maclay. The creation of Maclay Connects better leverages the resources of our alumni to benefit our current students, families, and other alumni. I am excited about continuing to deepen these relationships as we approach our 50th birthday. The Tomorrow Begins Today Campaign continues to move forward as we have completed almost all of the projects originally outlined. Maclay continues to need and garner wonderful support from her families and friends. Building and transitioning these relationships of support will be vital as Maclay seeks to grow endowment and strengthen our position as a school of significance in the southeast. As we look forward to next year we have already begun building the groundwork for many strategic groups. Curriculum alignment and collaboration will be focuses for next year as we build on the data collected this past year and the ERB results we will have in September. Value outside the classroom will also be an area of emphasis for us. Expanding our character development in all divisions and life/college-readiness skills for our upper school students will continue to be refined. These are only a few of the initiatives set out in Maclay’s Vision2K15. We will continue working on all of these areas to ensure our 48th year at Maclay is our best year yet. I hope to see each of you on campus next year to share our excitement of our beautiful campus. Yours, James

Under the direction of parent volunteer Sara Merrill, the Maclay Auction: Southern Soiree presented by Hancock Bank on March 28, was a beautiful night to remember. Sara and her team of talented volunteers transformed the Cartee Gym into a southern masterpiece that included dinner from John Thomas, and the great sounds of Complete Desire on Fire from Atlanta, Ga. Hundreds of items were up for bid, using the mobile app, such as unique student art, class baskets, trips, and jewelry. Guest auctioneer Sen. Aaron Bean helped make the evening with a successful live auction. Save the Date: Maclay Auction 2016: February 27, 2016

Faculty Excellence Grant A portion of the proceeds received from the 34th Annual Maclay Auction provided the inaugural funding for the newly established Faculty Excellence Grant. The purpose of the Faculty Excellence Grant is to enhance the quality of the liberal arts program at Maclay in a meaningful and substantial way and to give faculty an opportunity to make an impact and sustain excellence within the academic program. Faculty were asked to submit proposals for a project, program, or training with the following criteria: • In the area of differentiation which seeks to ensure a rigorous curriculum that is responsive to the individual learner. • In the area of technology integration, innovative ways to infuse technology into a robust curriculum that is approachable to both teacher and student. • In the area of innovation, new programs which will open up new avenues of learning and experience to our students. A committee of faculty and staff selected winners and awarded dollars for the winning grants based on these very specific goals. The winners of the 2015 Faculty Excellence Grants were David Rolf’s digital app and learning simulation curriculum, Matt Schnippert and Fran Sandon’s cross-divisional hands-on science lab lessons, and Barbara Cairn’s Bee-Bot program for Kindergarten. Each will be funded for the 2015-16 school year. 3

BUILDING ROCKETS 6th and 7th Grade Science classes recently finished a hands-on Aerodynamics and Energy Unit. Students designed, built, and launched water rockets using a bicycle pump to pressurize the water rocket. Students experimented with a variety of materials to design and build a viable rocket with fins and a nose cone. Students tested, launched, and refined their rockets. After completing the field lab, students are able to differentiate between potential and kinetic energy during flight, define the forces acting on the water rocket (gravity, thrust and drag), effectively apply data collection, observation, inference and Newton’s Laws to real world applications.

The Maclay Football Booster Board is continuing a tradition started last year, the Maclay Football Lettermen’s Club. The School’s football program is entering its 9th year, and the Booster Board invites all letterman to stay in touch with Maclay Football through the Club. The annual membership dues ($20) will help fund the Varsity and Middle School programs. Once again this year, the Board will attempt to identify one specific funding need and apply the total dues collected from Club members toward that need. Club members will be listed in various football publications. The Board also plans to hold special events during football season and at other times of the year. The Board hopes all football alumni will consider becoming a member of the Club and that all Maclay alumni will follow the team on its website (www.maclayfootball.com), the team Twitter account (@MarauderFootbal), and on the team Facebook page (/maclay.marauders). To become a member of the Letterman’s Club, please contact Rob Sniffen, Booster President, at (850) 510-8586 or rsniffen@ sniffenlaw.com, or download the form at the page of the football website devoted to the Club: http://www.maclay.org/ Page/3129, and mail to Mr. Sniffen at 123 North Monroe Street, Tallahassee, FL 32301.

On April 19, Maclay School officially launched the Girls Leadership and Success Series. A steering committee of faculty was assembled to create a program to help students chart their paths to successful and fulfilling lives of leadership and impact. The GLSS will present a number of meetings throughout each school year, and it will focus on teaching Maclay’s high school girls the skills of self-awareness and confidence to empower them to become leaders in their communities. The first meeting with the Maclay Upper School girls welcomed women community leaders for a panel discussion.
leadership and success. This program will be a powerful way to engage and encourage our female leaders of tomorrow.” Former parent and community leader Beth Langford served as moderator for the afternoon assembly, which included a panel of three successful women from our Tallahassee community: a sixth-generation Floridian and eight year Representative Loranne Ausley; FSU Women’s Basketball Coach, Sue Semrau who was recently honored with several national Coach of the Year awards; and attorney and past chair of the Greater Tallahassee Chamber of Commerce, Glenda Thornton.
“Confident Leadership is the one trait that has the greatest potential to change the world,” said Maclay’s Head of School James Milford, who created the GLSS concept. “Therefore, as we build our leaders at Maclay, we must be purposeful in our work to ensure we are meeting our students where they are illuminating the way ahead. Learning from those who have gone before us is a part of the pathway to
“I loved being able to see, first-hand, how important women are to our community. I was so encouraged by what the panel had to say. The women encouraged me to always stay true to myself and to never give up when I set my mind on something,” added junior Cassidy Craig. The Girls Leadership & Success Series plans two to three meetings next school year and will offer various topics and
discussions pertinent to young girls today. Langford is enthusiastic about the growth and development of this program: “Working with young women all over the country for the past 25 years, I have seen firsthand the need for, and benefits of, building confidence and self-esteem in girls. We want them to take away from this program that you CAN do anything!”
The Jeffrey Alan Gabor Junior Interview Series Last fall, Maclay’s Head of School James Milford began the conversation with the Maclay Parents Organization and the Maclay Alumni Association about ways to help prepare Maclay’s students for the critical moments they face preparing for college-like interviewing scholarships and eventually, jobs. On February 25, Maclay School launched the first of three Junior Interview Series dates as part of the on-going initiative to connect Maclay students with local alumni and community members. The students were provided information in several meetings on how best to prepare for an interview, including how to dress and greet the interviewer, answer
questions, and follow-up. Volunteers from the FSU Career Center presented best interviewing practices to the juniors the week before the mock interviews took place. Over the course of the three days, over 50 professionals including parents, alumni, and community leaders participated in interviewing students as well as providing valuable feedback and evaluation. The Junior interview series has been endowed and named in honor of Jeffrey Alan Gabor, grandfather to six Maclay students and graduates. Mr. Gabor passed away a little over 11 years ago and was a long time resident of Tallahassee, making indelible marks on the community. His spirit continues through the generosity and stewardship of his family. 1515

College Counseling Expands By Dr. Scott E. Hampton As we used to see and hear in the old western and war movies “Here comes the Cavalry!” Maclay’s reinforcements to the College Counseling program have arrived in the form of six super College Advisors to help guide our seniors toward victory in attending the college of their dreams! Dr. Paul Berk, Mrs. Lisa Donaldson, Mr. Matthew Schnippert, Mr. Brandon Burrows, Mr. Lee Norment, and Ms. Jessica Kerner have enthusiastically taken on this new role to advise, guide, and mentor our seniors through the complicated college application process this year. Yes, this process has become much more complicated since we, the parents, applied to college many years ago. As I was preparing a timeline for our Advisors, I identified 27 different critical dates and/ or major activities that our seniors must be aware of, or complete, to successfully reach their dream college, and that did NOT include those critical SAT or ACT exams. This past year it was ‘Me and 93’ with the support of Mrs. McCall and our parents, trying to make sure all 93 of our seniors accomplished their major college application activities by the numerous deadlines they faced. Seniors had to do all this really important college app “stuff” while juggling their rigorous academic coursework, demanding athletic or extracurricular activities, and also leading their teams/activities as captains, presidents or directors. Next year, our advisors will see their seniors EVERY DAY in homeroom
to help guide, remind, and mentor them through these critical steps in the process. I am also available to all the students and their parents to help answer any college related questions. The program is already a hit and we haven’t even started the senior year yet! The students, who chose their advisor, love it, the advisors love it, and I am really excited to see them excited about it. “Schnippert’s Scientists” already proposed challenges to compete against other homerooms in areas like most scholarship money earned and deadline completion rates. I am very excited about the camaraderie that is developing among the advisors and students. One of Mr. Milford’s key initiatives this year was to enhance our advocacy for each student, and our seniors now truly have an advocate and mentor that they are excited to work with every day this year. Some of the students have already had their advisor for three different classes, and now that advisor will write their primary letters of recommendation to colleges. This new advisor system will enhance our students’ efficiency and effectiveness in the college application process and also foster positive lifelong relationships among our advisors and students.
HAMP’s CHAMPs College Application Rally We will kick-off the school year during pre-planning week with ‘HAMP’s CHAMPs College Application Rally’ for interested seniors to jump-start their college applications on August 11th, from 9AM to 1PM in the Library. It should be an exciting year for our seniors. Juniors will ‘jump-start’ their College Advising process when they select their Advisors in the spring term and start attending their homeroom each day in the 4th quarter. I look forward to meeting all juniors and their parents next spring. Scott E. Hampton, Ph.D., Director of College Counseling 19
The New SAT All 9th, 10th, and 11th graders will experience the new PSAT this October and our 11th graders will take the new SAT in March. This is really old news, however, because our students and teachers have already pilot tested nearly every portion of this new SAT version (see Winter/Spring 2014 edition of Virtu Magazine). Based on the revisions and focusing more on core curriculum competencies, our students should actually perform even better on this newer version of the SAT, compared to the old SAT, as our academic curriculum is one of our strengths at Maclay School. Parents will also understand it more because the CollegeBoard is going back to the 1600 point scale (800 for Critical Reading and 800 for Math). Several key changes include: • 1600 max vs. 2400 max score • No penalty for guessing • Only four answer options (A-D) instead of 5 (although they will still have those dreaded A or B, B only, or A, B & C answer options). • Optional 50 minute Writing portion* *MANDATORY for ALL MACLAY Students-just like the ACT optional writing-because most colleges also want the writing portion. Our students also excel in writing. • No more obscure ‘SAT Words’ vocabulary. Vocabulary will be much more relevant and contextual. • More Algebra, less geometry and a few questions on trigonometry and statistics. • More historical reading passages, including excerpts from the Constitution, Bill of Rights, famous speeches, etc. • More reading passages, charts, graphs to read for interpretation and evidenced-based analysis opportunities. (If you are a slow reader: READ, READ and READ to read and analyze faster.) FREE PRACTICE: Fortunately, everyone will ‘see’ and practice the new test format with the PSAT this October. Even more fortunate, CollegeBoard has partnered with the Khan Academy to offer FREE online test prep at www.khanacademy.org/sat . YES-it’s FREE-and those who have used the Khan Academy for many other subjects know that it is very helpful and relevant for student comprehension. I also encourage ALL Upper School students to download free apps on their phone so they can literally ‘touch’ test prep EVERY DAY
with the ‘Question of the Day’ for the SAT and the ACT. Downloads available here: • ACT app: ‘ACT up’ by Score Beyond; Also on computer at http://www.act.org/qotd/ • SAT app: “The Official SAT Question of the Day” by CollegeBoard 11th GRADE ‘2-for-1 SAT SPECIAL’: Yes, the 11th graders can actually take BOTH the NEW and the OLD versions (if appropriate) of the SAT this year. The current (OLD) version of the SAT is available for our seniors, and our juniors (if desired), for the OCT, NOV, DEC and JAN test cycles. The NEW SAT begins in MARCH 2016 and continues in MAY, JUN and subsequent years. Although it is not official for all, most colleges queried have said they will accept either the current (OLD) or NEW version for JUST this year’s juniors (Class of 2017). Colleges did the same when the SAT went through its last change in 2005 when they added the Writing section. So… what’s a junior to do? Which test to take because these tests are so critical for college admissions and scholarships. I’ve summarized my recommendation, along with the test dates in the chart below, which I also posted on the College Counseling website. The critical driver behind this recommendation is our students’ interest in attending Florida State University (over 50% apply), which requires a minimum score of 500 on EACH subtest of the SAT. Taking both tests (if close to that 500 range) gives students the best chance of reaching that goal. Additionally, the scores for the first MARCH SAT will not be returned to students until JUNE, after the May and June test cycles are completed. That leaves only one October test left for college applications, many of which are DUE on OCT 15th (FSU) or NOV 1st (UF), after students get their FIRST scores back from the CollegeBoard. Thus, many of our juniors may want to pursue this ‘2-for-1 SAT Special’ to maximize their chances for admissions and scholarships. Start practicing now with that Question of the Day and the Khan Academy! Scott E. Hampton, Ph.D., Director of College Counseling

Wonder what on earth Pope Francis is up to? Mary Shovlain has a new weekly radio show with some answers. An American in Rome who has covered the Vatican and the Catholic Church for EWTN, Vatican Radio, and other outlets, Mary is the host of The Vatican Report with Mary Shovlain on Sirius XM’s the Catholic Channel (Saturdays at 8 AM and11 AM EST; Sundays at 1 PM). She was recently interviewed by the National Review: Mary: I came to Rome to do graduate studies in theology and philosophy at the Pontifical University of St. Thomas Aquinas, and wanted to get my doctorate so I could go back to the U.S. and hopefully teach in a Catholic university. While I was finishing my coursework a friend of mine was leaving her job at Vatican Radio and told me that they were looking to fill the position. So I thought I would do it just to pay the bills while I finished my degree. Vatican Radio hired me and I immediately fell in love with the world of social communications and broadcasting in particular! I love live radio and live television — that is where I really feel at home. I first came to Rome in 1995 as a student, I went back to the U.S. a couple of times since then — once in 1997 to get a master’s degree from the Franciscan University of Steubenville, and then again in 2002 to work for EWTN in Alabama. But I came back to Rome in 2003 because I noticed that Catholic media outlets did not have a lot of programming coming to them from Rome, and I wanted everyone to know and love the Vatican and Rome like I did. So since 2003 I have been here making television and radio programs and continuing to collaborate with Vatican Radio to provide live coverage of papal events.

Greek courses. She was a member of the women’s organization Warner Hall Eating House which was founded in 1982 and promotes leadership, friendship and fellowship. The Fulbright Scholarship program was created by the U.S. Congress in 1946 to foster international understanding through educational exchanges. It was named in honor of Senator J. W. Fulbright and is funded by the U.S. government. The Fulbright program funds a number of different opportunities, including exchange of scholars, travel grants, and dissertation research. However, most scholarships are for graduating seniors or recent graduates. The two primary programs are Fulbright Full Grants, for a year of study and research at a university, and the Fulbright English Teaching Assistant (ETA) program, which selects students who wish to teach English and carry out a research or service project on the side. For India, the Fulbright program will take her to study in Trier, Germany under a
Fulbright research grant at the Universität Trier. The upcoming year holds much in store for India who shares the following: “I’ll be expanding my honors thesis on Roman comedy, auditing classes, improving my German and learning French, and traveling! The year after, I will start the PhD program in Classical Philology at UNC, Chapel Hill, and I hope to become a professor.” With all her great accomplishments to date, India is quick to acknowledge her Maclay background as a key factor in bringing her to where she is today. She credits her love of Latin to her great Latin teacher, Mr. Ken Andino, who encouraged her to take Latin. She also credits her strong writing and English skills to Mrs. Lou Lewis, Mrs. Kathy Engelbrecht, and Dr. Kathy Scott. What a legacy for Maclay – its outstanding faculty and an outstanding alumna! Congratulations, India, and wishes from the Maclay family to you for great success in all your endeavors.

Alumni Affairs CLASS NEWS Class of 2011 (cont’d.) “Walking Strong: Ovarian Cancer Survivor Graduates from SMU” This was the title of a news piece (http:// cw33.com/2015/05/15/walking-strongovarian-cancer-survivor-smu-studentgraduates/) about our own Katie Ballard. Katie was diagnosed at the exceptionally young age of 20 with stage 1 ovarian cancer. “It’s one of those things that you never expect to hear,” Katie explained. Thankfully, doctors were able to remove the tumor; plus she didn’t need chemotherapy. Now, she’s an active advocate for awareness of your own body and symptoms that may present themselves. Katie graduated from SMU in May with her degree in journalism, the perfect platform for continuing her desire to help others with early detection.
Class of 2013 Maddie Ballard continues her studies at the University of Texas at Austin and is doing great! She was recently selected as only one of twenty recipients to be a senior fellow in the College of Communications – quite an honor. Congratulations, Maddie, and keep up the great work!!
