Spring/Summer 2016

A Letter from the Head of School

Board of Trustees 2016-2017 Karen Unger, Chairperson Members: Tom Barron Sarah Bascom

Dear Maclay Community,

Monesia Brown Chris Diamantis

A lot has happened in the past two years as we usher Maclay into her 2nd half century. Through better sharing of the Maclay story, and families showing their confidence in our school to those in their communities, we are currently full in the majority of our classes. Maclay is an active, vibrant, and important part of the Big Bend area, and we will continue to lead in education and work very hard to fulfill our mission to provide a liberal arts education, enabling each student to develop inherent ability to the fullest extent with a balance of discipline and freedom.

Chris Dudley

As you read this, we are renovating the Middle School courtyard to match the new experience enjoyed by the Upper School students in the Sachs Upper School Courtyard. I can’t wait for our faculty, students, and parents to come back in August to a fresh look. If you have not visited the campus in a few years, you must come see us. I’d love to walk you around and hear about your time at Maclay.

Murray Moore

We are also working hard and putting the final touches on an updated orientation program for new faculty and staff. One of the greatest challenges an institution like Maclay faces, is maintaining the core of what has made us exceptional for decades, while welcoming in new talented faculty and staff who have a great impact on the student experience and outcome. We have designed an experience for our new teachers to understand who we are and how they impact our mission. Last year, we changed our hiring practices to cast the net much further to ensure we were attracting the best candidates for our positions. This year, in addition to welcoming back alumni and friends from Tallahassee to join our staff, we have new faculty from California, New Jersey, and the Atlanta area.

I am also proud and excited about an initiative our student leaders took on last year that impacts us deeply moving forward. Institutions become great and stay that way through clarity and focus on the right things. Maclay has always and will always hold to excellence in our liberal arts education, but the community for almost two decades has said that how we act is also important in the Making of a Marauder. In the mid-1990s, the student leaders wrote an Honor Code that has stood as a guide for how we treat our academic integrity, each other, and the property of the school. This year, the students took on the challenge of making the code one that was meaningful for the entire school, K-12. The new Honor Code reads: A Marauder is Honorable. Respectful. Accountable. I will respect all people and property. I will be honest in all matters and take responsibility for my actions. This clear and powerful statement will be our guide as we work in each grade level to not only make great learners, but also great people. Enjoy the reading of our Virtu; you will be proud of all your school is doing. Yours, James

FACULTY NEWS Teacher Academy The Teacher Academy just completed its first year with 12 Maclay faculty members. The goal of the Teacher Academy is to build capacity from within Maclay in a collaborative, safe, and supportive environment. In addition to working on new initiatives like Understanding by Design, the Directors of Teaching and Learning worked with Teacher Academy participants on professional growth. Participants had the opportunity to collaborate with their colleagues, learn new strategies for student engagement and success, reflect on their teaching, and share their expertise with others. This was intensive and relevant professional learning targeted to each faculty member’s needs. New members to next year’s Teacher Academy include Fran Sandon (K), Annie Bell (3), Emma Perry (MS Latin/English), Matt Schnippert (US Science), Katie Walker (MS Math), and Lauren Fantle (US English).

“The best part of Teacher Academy is that conversation about teaching is welcomed in an informal environment in which we know as a rule that we are going to be supported, working together for proactive change, and celebrate and build upon what is going well in the classroom. The sharing element is key!” - Member of the Teacher Academy

School Site Visits

Association of Supervision and Curriculum Development Conference

Visiting other like-minded independent schools and sharing ideas with teachers and curriculum coordinators is a great way to learn and grow as a faculty. This year Maclay faculty had the opportunity to visit two schools in Atlanta, Georgia. In January, a cross-divisional group of faculty spent the day at The Children’s School, a PK3-Grade 6 school in midtown Atlanta and later visited Westminster School.

In early April, 12 Maclay faculty members traveled to Atlanta for the Association of Supervision and Curriculum Development (ASCD) Annual Conference. They joined thousands of educators from around the world for 4 days of professional learning. Highlights included a keynote address by Manny Scott, an original Freedom Writer whose story is told in part in the 2007 movie Freedom Writers, and a speech by Carol Dweck, growth mindset psychologist and author. The group left energized and inspired. Over the next few months, conference participants worked with the Directors of Teaching and Learning to share what they learned with others in their grade levels, departments, and divisions. 2

Faculty Excellence Grant 2016-17 The Faculty Excellence Grant was created in 2014 to enhance the quality of the liberal arts program at Maclay School. Stipends are offered to faculty or staff members who have the potential and desire to make a meaningful impact and sustain the excellence of the Maclay academic program. Any employee of the school may apply, but preference is given to applications in the areas of differentiation, technology integration, or innovation. Grants were awarded to those proposals leading to significant curricular innovation beyond the normal annual revision or growth. A committee reviewed the submitted proposals and selected the following grants for the 2016-17 school year. Congratulations to these faculty members: Stephanie Cornais – Schoolyard Habitats: Creation of several Schoolyard Habitat areas that will support local wildlife and serve as a living laboratory and outdoor classroom where children can engage in hands-on science. Kristen Youngblood and Emma Perry - Mock Archaeologic Site: The project will allow students to learn mapping and graphing skills while making grids, using math and science skills, and applying real life archeological techniques. Emma Perry - Digital Textbook for Latin 6th Grade: The creation of the digital textbook involves collecting resources, explanatory text, and videos of the grammatical material, and incorporating cultural lessons and interactive features that will easily be accessed with the new Bring Your Own Device program to be implemented next school year. Bentley Harris - Genius Hour Passion Project: Lower School students will be given time, freedom, and resources to deeply explore topics that they are passionate about, building knowledge, connections, and possibilities. The Genius Hour is inspired by Google. Darlene Miller and Dean Gargiulo - Force and Motion: The Force and Motion project will be used in collaboration with the classroom teacher, science lab teacher, and the technology support staff to integrate a problem-solving strategy in all areas of the curriculum including robot building skills that will help build a foundation for engineering and an eagerness to create machines that can be programmed and coded.

RETIRED FACULTY LUNCHEON Maclay hosted a Retired Faculty lunch again this year and we were happy to welcome so many of our favorite teachers and staff back to campus. Pictured: Bertha Williams, Barbara Stanyard and Kathy Scott

Signature

Our

Programs

At Maclay School, we provide a number of Signature Programs that were created to take our students further. These programs offer a variety of experiences and opportunities, but all are centered around taking the student educational experience beyond the classroom and adding value to what it means to be a Maclay Marauder. Our Signature Programs include the Marauder Moments Character Development program, the Jeffrey Alan Gabor Junior Interview Series, The Girls Leadership and Success Series, the Boys Champions Series, the Freshman Academy, the Academic Resource Center and the Korean and Chinese Classes.

The Guidance Office’s Marauder Moments program included guest speakers, monthly themes like respect, responsibility, and programs like “Words Matter”.

Jeffrey Alan Gabor Junior Interview Series The Gabor Junior Interview Series completed its second year providing juniors and some seniors opportunities to participate in mock interviews with professionals from our communities in order to improve their skills when applying for scholarships, colleges, and jobs in the future. This program has continued to grow and shown to be very beneficial to our students. “I just wanted to let you know that today I went in for an interview for the engineering company …The Junior Interview Series this year really helped me prepare for this and gave me a confidence walking in. I think all in all this will look great for college!” – Rising Senior 6

The Girls Leadership and Success Series and The Boys Champions Series GLSS and Boys Champions Series hosted a senior only session in May – “How To Survive the First Year of College.” Guest speakers from Florida State’s Counseling Office and our very own alumni, Giles Langford and Jenny Moore, Class of 2007, shared their tips and suggestions for a successful first year. After the meeting, the class enjoyed a lunch provided by the Advancement and Alumni Offices.

The Freshman Academy The Freshman Academy completed its first year and was a huge success. Under the direction of sponsor Angela Croston, the 103 Maclay freshmen had a number of grade specific assemblies that talked about how to incorporate study skills, time management, test taking, and other necessary skills to be successful high school students. Each freshman met three times individually with a counselor plus the class participated in homeroom and class meeting activities, service projects during the holidays, and the always fun Freshman Challenge!

Colonial Trade Fair On February 11, the 5th grade brought a six-week project to life with their Colonial Trade Fair. Student groups were assigned to one of 17 trades and researched the trade by addressing particular questions concerning the skills required and challenges that their colonial tradesmen needed to get their jobs done. These questions were also the basis of their oral presentations, which were the culmination of the project. The students designed trade store fronts, which were completed on tri-fold boards, and advertised their goods and services to give visitors a peek into life in Colonial times.

5th Grade visits the Marine Lab The 5th graders took a field trip to the Marine Lab this spring where the students were able to experience touch tanks with turtles, sharks, and rays. They also went to the docks for exploration and got to wade into the marsh for seining!

MIDDLE SCHOOL NEWS 7th Graders Take DC

6th Graders Learn about NASA

The Maclay 7th Graders once again made their way north on a traditionally snowy tour of Washington DC. The students visited museums and historical sites that brought their social studies classes to life. The 6th graders took an educational trip to the Challenger Center downtown this spring. They played an active role in the “Mission to the Moon” while learning more about NASA. Earlier in the semester the classes explored augmented reality using the NASA Spacecraft 3D app which allowed students to place the rover, Curiosity, over different surfaces on Mars.

Skyping with India Mrs. Rubio-Gomez’s World Geography Class enjoyed an up close and personal look at life in India while studying the country. The class Facetimed a family friend in India and the students asked questions about their culture and life.

KITES ON DISPLAY 8th graders studied Alexander Graham Bell’s research on the flying machines of the future. The project allowed students to study and then create a replica of the Tetrahedral kite after which they then took to the back fields to test their kites.

Best and Brightest 8th grader, Madeleine Roberts, won honorable mention at the Best and Brightest Awards for her essay “Committed to a Common Good: The Family Role in Community Service.” The competition had a record number of submissions with a total of 53 countywide finalists from a whopping 18 different schools.

LOGIC CLASS DEBATE A lively debate on “Is Homework Really Necessary?” gave 6th graders in Logic class an opportunity to research and debate using proper debate techniques. The two opposing opinions were presented to the guest judges who participated in Mrs. Perry’s exercise.

“The ‘small group’ of family engaged in service can have a lasting effect by changing a child’s perspective from a natural selfishness to a recognition of the needs of others and a desire for involvement and action. By modeling and inspiring community service, a family really can be the genesis of positive change in the world.” -Excerpt from Roberts’ essay

Here’s the scoop from Sharon: “He was scouted through a sorority sister of mine - she saw his picture on Facebook and sent it to her friend that is a part owner of Ludlow Scout - Atlanta/NY (his motheragent). They asked him to do some test pictures (December 2015). The photographer is the second owner and she lives in NY. Next step was to travel to NY (January 2016) to see if an agency was interested in him. We had a list of our top five agencies and started with our first choice, IMG International. (They do Sports illustrated, represent Cindy Crawford’s kids and many others, they

also represent Gigi Hadid, Etc.) They signed him on-the-spot! At age 16, he is their youngest male model. Exciting things coming up! He is living in NY but will travel back and forth. He graduated a year early from Leon High School to pursue this exciting opportunity!” Ellen Camp McFarlain and her husband John and Keyes Williamson and his wife Melissa just got together down at St. Teresa for the fourth year in a row to enjoy spending time together with their families. Keynote speakers at the event included a robotics engineer focused on children with learning disabilities, an entrepreneur who is pioneering autism research with Google Glass, and world renowned scientists and academics in the autism space. The group brainstormed ways to collaborate and spark partnerships, with the hopes of using emerging technology, new drug treatments and therapies, as well as specially designed living spaces to help individuals on the autism spectrum. Notably, the group discussed research finding that certain apps, robots and wearable devices [such as Google Glass] are helping autistic children learn how to engage more with others. Attendees plan to continue their conversations and collaborations to grow this community globally.

CLASS NEWS Class of 2014 (cont’d.) In spite of her hearing disability challenges, Julia Filloon (‘14) has done amazing things and her accomplishments and determination are being applauded/recognized in articles written about her. An article titled “Overcoming Obstacles” released on May 9, 2016 says, “Not only has she been elected the president of Elon University’s Engineering Club and founded the Elon Rocket Club, but she will be applying to Georgia Tech for the second part of her bachelor’s degree in aerospace engineering. This is part of the Elon University 3–2 program which allows students to be at Elon for three years, get an engineering/physics degree, and then attend an affiliated university for two more years to complete a bachelor’s degree in aerospace engineering.” “Julia knew that she wanted to be an engineer after attending science camp where she engaged in experiments, learned how to build a rocket, and even tested out a zero gravity room. She said that she ‘loved it so much’ she went back for six more

summers after that. However Julia learned that obstacles were going to be challenging for her to enter into this field. With only 3.9% of freshman women in 2012 declaring a major in engineering she knew that she would have to work twice as hard to make her mark in this field. Women have come so far in the engineering world but there are still strides to be made. Furthermore, only one in nine students who graduate with an engineering degree have a disability. Paired with both of these challenges, Julia promised herself to work hard and earn the career that she wanted such as ‘NASA or some other aerospace corporation’.” We wish her Good Luck in all her dreams and pursuits!!

Class of 2015 Over spring break of her freshman year, Shannon Duncanson was one of 12 students selected to participate in a program at Clemson University’s Archbold Tropical Research and Education Center (ATREC) in Springfield, Dominica in the West Indies. The center is a 198-acre tract of rainforest and agricultural land that was gifted to the university in 1989 by conservationist and philanthropist John D. Archbold who had the vision of international students and researchers working with Dominican citizens to address pressing land use concerns. Shannon’s group worked with

Julia Filloon in a zero gravity simulator at Space Camp.

IN MEMOR IAM high school age kids on the island. Highlighting the conclusion of her freshman year, Shannon was named to Clemson Univerity’s President’s List for achieving a 4.0 (all A’s) grade point average. Congratulations Shannon!

The Maclay School Alumni Association is pleased to announce a very special project –

MACLAY ALUMNI COURTYARD with the

Distinguished Alumni Wall and Legacy Walkway This new addition to the Maclay campus will be located around the historic Maclay landmark – the Maclay Oak Tree – which has long been a symbol of Maclay and its traditions. Included in the courtyard will be the Distinguished Alumni Wall with plaques honoring those alums who have received the Distinguished Alumnus Award. There will also be the Legacy Walkway composed of brick pavers that will connect the courtyard to the Senior Shack. This walkway is where all alumni can be a part of Maclay’s history and legacy. The pavers will be available only to Maclay alumni and each paver will be engraved with the alum’s name and graduation year. The funds raised from the sale of these brick pavers help construct the walkway and will go primarily towards a scholarship and/or financial assistance for Maclay students. Construction will take place over the summer 2016.
