A Letter from the Head of School

Board of Trustees 2016-17 Karen Unger, Chair Tom Barron Sarah Bascom Monesia Brown Chris Diamantis Chris Dudley Kiki Dunton Meredith Hunter

Dear Maclay Community, As we march quickly through our school year, I continue to enjoy the steady and thoughtful care our students, faculty, and alumni take of each other and our fine school. One area of particular pride can be found in our new service learning program. In recent years we have had an active debate about how to best use service to our community as a part of the educational journey. This year we took our first intentional step to move our community one step closer to our goal. Our goal is for all service to be hands-on. We believe service that changes hearts and minds is the type where you “do” and not necessarily when you only “give” monetarily. Giving to funds for charities is important, however, we want our students to see, hear, touch, and have the emotional connection that comes from, “doing good.” Our students have been serving others for years. Now the school is building consistency and continuity as a One School initiative. From kindergarten making food and serving at the homeless shelter to gifts for those without our many blessings during the holiday season. From coats for those without, to organizing blood drives for those in need. With each act of kindness and service, my pride grows for the lives helped, hearts lifted, and lives changed. Service learning is one of the hundred aspects of our community I am proud of. As you read through this season’s Virtu, I know your pride in your school will grow as well. Yours in Maclay,

James Milford Head of School

#1School#1Community Convocation

On August 15, Maclay School opened their 49th school year with the third annual Convocation. The entire school walked in the gym on a red carpet. The Seniors came in escorting 1st and 2nd grade students. Speakers included Student Council President Nicholas Fontela, Middle School Student Council President Jacob Slack, and Senior Class President Jack Lynch. The Convocation concluded with a speech by Head of School James Milford and the official start of the school which was symbolized by the longest standing Maclay employee, Mrs. Jennifer Corzine, ringing the bell. 2

MPO’s

FALL FLING To kick-off the school spirit for the year, MPO hosted its community event, the Fall Fling, on August 26 before the first home football game. The cheerleaders performed, games were played, and food from food trucks was served. It was a fun time for all involved. Thanks MPO for hosting!

New Honor Code

Last year a committee of high school students and faculty gathered to examine the nearly 20-year-old honor code at Maclay. After much discussion, the committee decided to revise the honor code to make it more memorable and applicable to all divisions but still represent the characteristics and qualities of what it means to be a Marauder. This new honor code was introduced to the students at the start of the year and now reads: “A Marauder is Honorable, Respectful, and Accountable. I will respect all people and property. I will be honest in all matters and take responsibility for my actions.” A prestigious Honor Coin was also created and introduced and will be presented each year to those who exemplify the Honor Code. 3

SERVICE LEARNING This school year, Maclay introduced a new Service Learning Program to better serve the students, community, and the many area organizations it works with throughout the year. The idea of service begins as early as Pre-K and grows each year after to help the students understand and appreciate what it means to be a good citizen in the community and to Learn, Serve, Grow. The program’s website, www.maclay.org/servicelearning provides a directory of community partners and events where the students can volunteer.

Battle of the Bells was held on December 10th in a competition against Chiles to see who could fill the Salvation Army buckets the most.

The Middle School and Varsity Cheerleaders collected items such as socks, toothbrushes, and snacks for their Pack for a Cause campaign. The packs were donated to the Kearny Center for distribution to the homeless.

The football team and cheerleaders participated in the St. Jude Children’s Cancer Awareness month and the Relay for Life.

The Boys Basketball team collected over 500 pounds of food for Second Harvest of the Big Bend. 4

Helping Hands was launched to provide a meal at the HOPE Shelter once a month. The Lower School families, Jr. Beta, Anchor, and other organizations each month help cook, prepare, and serve the meal. After the flooding that devastated Louisiana, all the divisions of Maclay students came together to donate school supplies to the Runnels School, a fellow independent school, in Baton Rouge, LA. Maclay teacher Laurie Coburn, who is from the area, delivered all of the Backpacks for Baton Rouge.

Pink Pink Day Day On Wednesday, October 5, Maclay participated in Tallahassee’s Paint it Pink to kick off Breast Cancer Awareness month.

From the Classroom

TEACHER ACADEMY Maclay School established Teacher Academy in 2015 to build capacity from within and empower teachers. Teacher Academy is a community of learners who share expertise, enhance each other’s school experiences, strive for professional growth, and celebrate each other’s work in their classrooms. This fall the group of 18 teachers has worked to put this mission into practice, creating “recipes” and action plans for the implementation of programs that foster innovation and emphasize individual strengths. The group has also spent time working to clarify what it means to be a teacher leader and how Teacher Academy can assist in building a culture of collaboration at Maclay. Maclay School is proud to be part of the Teacher Leadership movement and capitalize on the expertise of our faculty to drive the school’s mission and vision.

Frank McKeown, Center Director

Center for Learning Maclay’s Center for Learning is off to a great start after the first semester of its inaugural year. The Center for Learning is a resource for parents, teachers, and students in all grades with learning disabilities, ADHD, and other disabilities that affect a student’s ability to access the Maclay’s rigorous curriculum. Center Director, Frank McKeown, brings years of experience in working with children and was recently recognized by the International Dyslexia Association as a Certified Dyslexia Practitioner based upon the Knowledge and Practice Standards for Teachers of Reading developed by that organization. Mr. McKeown is also a longtime Associate of the Academy of Orton-Gillingham Practitioners and Educators, a certifying body of that approach to teaching reading to students with dyslexia. He has also recently been elected to the position of Secretary of the International Dyslexia Association, Florida Branch. The Center has written over 100 academic improvement plans that list accommodations for students with documented disabilities, screened an additional 20 students, and referred a number of students for formal psycho-educational testing. The Center is also providing direct instruction to ten students who require more intensive interventions than can be provided in the classroom. The Center for Learning is also working in Lower School classrooms to provide interventions for struggling readers.

Charles Beamer, Head of Upper School Maclay’s Head of School James Milford announced Charles Beamer as the new Assistant Head of School effective July 1, 2017. Mr. Beamer, who was named Head of Upper School in December of 2015 will continue to oversee the high school. “This change in administrative structure is essential to keep clarity of purpose and execution of moving the school’s academic program to a seamless “one school” model,” Milford said. “Charles’ understanding of Maclay’s academic programs and passion for moving Maclay forward are unmatched. He has the vision, energy, and wisdom to build the systems necessary to take Maclay to higher levels of excellence.” As Assistant Head of School, Beamer will be responsible for the School’s total academic program beginning at PK-3 and continuing through 12th grade, Library Services, College Counseling, Guidance, Directors of Teaching & Learning, as well as the Center for Learning.

Rowdy ‘Rauder Adventure Challenge Returns for a Fourth Year On Saturday, October 8, Maclay once again hosted the Rowdy ‘Rauder Adventure Challenge. Over 40 teams representing students, parents, teachers, alumni, businesses, and community partners participated in the fun-filled adventure race, tackling 20 different challenges ranging in difficulty from a sandbox search to a run through an ice bath, to a tractor tire roll. This year, Susan Johnson led a great team of volunteers including Alexis Gaston Woodcock and Jen Bricker from Just Get Fit who designed the race, and tri-athlete and Maclay Running Club Director Angie Milford acted as Race Director. Teams consisted of four members and each participant received a Challenge t-shirt, medal, and race day swag. After the race, awards for several categories were presented by everyone’s favorite DJ Willie Brown.

LOWER SCHOOL NEWS

GRANDPERSON DAY Grandperson Day, an annual MPO event, was a great success again this year. MPO chairs Kathy Ward and Taylor Thompsen organized the event on October 13 where Lower and Pre-Schoolers invited the grand people in their life to a musical production of “The Grandeur of Color,” followed by refreshments and classroom visits.

GENIUS HOUR With the help of a Faculty Excellence Grant, Dean of Lower School, Bentley Harris launched a new, innovative program known as the Genius Hour. Inspired by Google employees, Lower School students work on their Genius Hour passion projects during the last hour of every Friday. Students are given complete freedom and resources to deeply explore topics they are passionate about, learn a new skill, or converse with fellow students and others in the community who share their passions.

Mrs. Cornais’ Garden After receiving a Faculty Excellence Grant, Stephanie Cornais started a garden to teach students about plants. The third grade planted kale earlier this year, and the first grade harvested it for Mrs. Cornais to bake kale chips. The chips were then served in the lunchroom for students and faculty of all divisions to enjoy. 14

Donuts for Dads

Officer Mitchell’s Birthday On November 4, the Pre-K gathered together to celebrate the birthday of our favorite Officer. Whether he is playing ping-pong in the shack with the seniors or directing drop-off at the Pre-K, students and faculty love and appreciate Officer Willie Mitchell.

Every year Donuts for Dads is one of the most popular MPO events. Put together by MPO Chair Dena Sokolow, dads of Pre-K and Lower School students came to share a cup of coffee and a donut with their kids. Thanks to all the dads who participated!

Veterans Day To help our students gain more appreciation for Veterans Day, our Director of College Counseling, Dr. (Colonel) Scott Hampton and a few Upper School students spoke to the 5th graders about the military and our veterans who served.

5th Grade Science 5th Graders had a visit from a team of hydrogeologists from Florida Department of Environmental Protection who gave the students hands-on demonstrations for their Earth Science Unit. The students built their own aquifers, took water samples, and put in a temporary well. 15

MIDDLE SCHOOL NEWS Perry’s Archeological Dig Site As a result of receiving the Faculty Excellence Grant, Kristen Youngblood and Emma Perry created a mock archeological site for use in Middle and Upper School Latin, anthropology, forensics, and history classes. The project includes excavating, sending results to an imaginary lab, and analyzing test results, which gives students an opportunity to research and present their findings.

GOES Satellite Cameron Barton’s 6th grade space science class held a “launch party” in honor of the innovative new satellite they studied, the Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellite-R (GOESR), which launched on November 19. As part of the project, students engineered and designed upcycled 3-D models of the satellite, some even designing theirs on Tinkercad, a computer aided design software. The “launch party” included food, a live video of the satellite, and a display of all the projects.

GIBBS SELECTED FOR MAG LAB PROGRAM This semester 8th grader Spencer Gibbs was one of only 17 Leon County students to be selected by the National High Magnetic Field Laboratory to work at the MagLab. Every Friday morning, the students went to the MagLab and worked on STEM related research. To display their research, Gibbs and the other students each conducted a presentation on December 13 for friends, family, and teachers.

Paloma Receives National Honor Sixth grader Paloma Rambana never stops. Her work in advocating for more state funding for the needs of visually-impaired kids has earned national recognition. She was named one of only ten national recipients of the Hasbro Community Action Hero Award, which she will be heading to NYC to accept in February. This isn’t her only award. On November 9, Paloma was awarded the Outstanding Youth in Philanthropy Award by the Big Bend Chapter of the Association of Fundraising Professionals. Although she’s already being celebrated, we know she is just getting started.

Flipped Lessons Make an Appearance in Latin Class In her three years of teaching at Maclay, Middle School Latin Teacher, Emma Perry has realized there were a lot of downsides to using the traditional lecture and homework style in her Latin class. She noticed that students who understood something were always bored in class and students who didn’t understand were embarrassed to ask for a repeat of the material. As a result, Perry introduced the flip lesson, where students can learn at their own pace. Flipped learning reverses the normal classroom set-up. Instead of teaching during class-time, the students learn the lesson at home by watching a video, and then do practice in the classroom.

“Flipped lessons allow students to pause and rewind lessons if they need to hear or see an example again, something they can’t really do during a live lecture. It also allows students to go back and watch lessons before tests and quizzes, which is a great way to study. In the classroom, I walk around and watch students doing what would have been homework,” said Perry.

MAC Twice a year, the Multi-Cultural Awareness Club, or MAC, puts on a culture fair in which members of the club make and bring food representing four countries. All week, the Upper School celebrated Slovakia, India, Belgium, and Ireland by dedicating each of the pods to a country through decorations and informative posters. On Friday, December 9, each country was represented by amazing food and information. “Culture fairs get the whole school to acknowledge different cultures and the good things they can offer,” said MAC President Joseph McCann.

Entrepreneur Series Launches

Career Day Student Council sponsored the annual Career Day with speakers from various careers: Alisha Wetherell (Engineer), Doug Johnson (Cyber Security), Shawn Hanway (Pediatric Dentist), Jenny Moore (Graphic Design), Mark Winegardner (Author), and Richard Smith (Criminal Defense Attorney) all participated. Thanks to all the speakers and student council members for creating a fun and successful Career Day!

Mr. Beamer launched an entrepreneur series in the Upper School where entrepreneurs around the city came to speak (such as parent Kim Rivers pictured), answered questions, and gave advice to students who are interested in the area of entrepreneurship. Beamer plans to expand this series second semester by creating a “shark tank” for students who have business ideas and students are also taking a new “Risk and Rewards” class as part of a partnership with Jim Moran Institute at FSU.

Anchor Members Volunteer at Lee’s Place On October 7, Anchor Members Anna Kaji, Linlee Franklin, Claire Angerer, and Parlin Escobar volunteered at Lee’s Place, a local nonprofit grief, loss, or trauma therapy center. The four members met at the American Legion Hall on Lake Ella to help prepare for Dove Tales, the nonprofit’s annual fundraiser. The nonprofit was formed in memory of Lee Rabalais, a Maclay student who passed away at the age of 14. 19

COLLEGE COUNSELING TOUCHDOWN Advisors and Hamp’s Champs transitioning to Chad’s Champs by Dr. Scott Hampton and Chad McClellan WOW! Our year-long College Advisor program has been a huge success in guiding our seniors toward their dream college. Their ‘touchdown,’ or goal, is getting accepted to the ‘best fit’ college for them and the ‘extra point’ is the scholarship that makes the accomplishment feel even better for the student and their parents. Our recent graduates from 2016 were offered over 8.2 Million dollars, which averages over $100,000 per student (a 25% increase from 2015). Our outstanding advisors, Dr. Paul Berk, Mrs. Lisa Donaldson, Mr. Matthew Schnippert, Mr. Brandon Burrows, Mr. Lee Norment and Ms. Jessica Kerner, along with our amazing faculty and parents, played a key role in truly making our seniors ‘Champions’ for college. Hamp’s Champs (our students and advisors) at Maclay will transition to Chad’s Champs later this summer. We are so fortunate that Chad McClellan joined our team in July to enhance the personal advisement that we can now provide to our students (and their parents) in all grades. His prior experience at Maclay, 13 years at Ohio State as a student-athlete advisor/mentor, and his genuine concern for students is a perfect fit for his future role as the Director of College Counseling. Chad and I will be meeting individually with all 9th and 11th grade students this spring semester, and we hope that a parent can join us for those wonderful conversations.

This is a new tradition! Every Friday, seniors who have been accepted into a college they applied to will ring the “gong” in the courtyard! We are looking forward to lots of noise this spring!

20

POND FISHING to DEEP SEA FISHING We are also excited to explore a new ‘career-oriented’ initiative over the next year to help our students further explore or ‘fish’ for college AND career-relevant information and opportunities. Last year, we implemented a new ‘Scavenger Hunt’ for our 9th graders in the 2nd semester to figuratively ‘teach them how to fish’ (pond fishing) for information about colleges, college majors, and careers. We are so fortunate to have Kristen Haller, an intern from FSU’s nationally recognized graduate program in Career Counseling, join us this spring semester to help us design and implement more in-depth career exploration and learning experiences for our students (deep sea fishing). Ideally, our seniors will have a better understanding of WHERE they want to go to college and WHAT they want to study because of their systematic learning activities at Maclay which may lead to real-world experiential and careeroriented opportunities to pursue in our recently implemented FLEX period or other summer programs. We look forward to ‘fishing’ for colleges and careers with your child.

HOMECOMING ’16

Homecoming 2016 was another fun week full of dress-up days, class competitions, the parade, pep rally, powder puff, and, of course, a fun football game and Homecoming Dance. The Key Club coordinated the week’s events and the “Fun in the Sun” theme. Every year, a big part of Homecoming is welcoming back our alumni. The Homecoming parade was filled with several floats of alumni and alumni children, our Hall of Fame and Distinguished Alumni honorees, many different school clubs, and our own Rowdy the Marauder. Nicholas Fontela and Anne Jackson McClure were crowned Homecoming King and Queen at halftime of the football game against West Gadsden. 21

Ezi’s rowing times place her at the top for girls regionally and are highly competitive nationally.

Athletic Director Gets Appointed to NIAAA Committee

On December 7, Mary Frances Daniel signed to play volleyball at Rhodes College in Memphis, Tennessee.

GARY HUNTER AWARD

Maclay football celebrated its 10-year anniversary this season. Still a young program which has had its share of ups and downs, the future looks bright. Twelve years ago, a group of parents approached former Maclay Headmaster Bill Jablon with an ambitious idea to start a football program. It had not been the first time Mr. Jablon had been approached with the idea, but this time the timing was right. Soccer had recently been moved to a winter sport and other independent schools had recently started football programs allowing for suitable opponents to schedule. Jablon challenged Gary Hunter and other Maclay parents to raise the start-up money in just a few weeks. Miraculously, their goal was reached and the football program was underway.

When his son was in sixth grade at Maclay, the opportunity arose for Hunter to coach the Middle School football team. A member of the Board of Trustees who served two years as chairman, he loved the role of coach even more. Coach Hunter noted that the most rewarding part about coaching is his interaction with the players; “Each year brings a different team personality, but I absolutely love leaving a law office every day of the football 24

Athletic Director Jake von Scherrer was appointed as Vice-Chair representing Section 3 on the Certification Committee for the National Interscholastic Athletic Administrators Association. The NIAAA is an association that supports the athletic administrator’s effort in providing quality athletic participation opportunities for students.

season to go spend time with my team. My memories of the stories I hear from them cannot be replicated, plus I’ve been fortunate enough to watch them grow into pretty decent football players.”

In his seven years of coaching, Coach Hunter has led his team to a record of 57-6, reflecting that his favorite victory as a coach was the Florida High game at Florida High in 2011, when the team was predicted to suffer an overwhelming defeat but instead won by two touchdowns. Coach Hunter continues to volunteer his time at Maclay, striving to better his players and the football program as a whole. At the Fall Sports Awards ceremony, Athletic Director Jake von Scherrer presented Coach Hunter with the newly established Gary Hunter Award, recognizing him for being a continued driving force in the program and for his incredible dedication to helping Maclay Football grow and thrive over the years. The Gary Hunter Award will be presented each year to the person who most exemplifies Coach Hunter’s passion and service to Maclay Football.

Day of the Dead Celebration Brings Different Divisions Together Every year, Spanish classes celebrate Day of the Dead from inside the classroom. This year, however, the Lower School Spanish classes partnered with the Upper School Introduction to Art classes and National Art Honor Society to have a bigger celebration. After studying the celebration in Guatemala, the art students created a giant kite, the Lower School students created individual kites, and the two groups gathered on the football field to fly them. This created a fun event for students of different divisions to come together and learn about a different culture.

Save the Date: The Celebration of the Arts is March 24. It is an awesome afternoon of food trucks, art, dance, music, and drama. Anybody interested in volunteering at the event should contact Ms. Kyle Maurey at kmaurey@maclay.org. 25

By the end of his coaching career, he had been named Florida High School Activities Coach of the Year and twice named Coach of the Year by the Tallahassee Democrat. As a junior, he was ranked 2nd in the state in total yards, named first team Panhandle Football Conference, and named FACA honorable mention. As a senior, he was named the Tallahassee Quarterback Club’s Offensive Player of the Year. In 2014, Roberts signed with the Oakland Raiders as an undrafted free agent, making him the first player in Maclay history to play for an NFL team. The 1975-1976 Girls’ Volleyball and Basketball Teams were also inducted. Both teams were coached by Joy Kirkland (Becker), who was inducted to the Maclay Hall of Fame last year. Eight players were on both rosters and led their teams to the school’s and the state of Florida’s first state championships in volleyball and basketball. Members of the teams included Margaret Black (Groves), Sherrie Cartee, Miranda Davis (Jarnot), Lacy Douglass, Pam Duys, B.K. FOUNDERS DAY This year, Maclay held its first Founders Day to celebrate our alumni and founders who laid the groundwork before us. This new tradition, which will now occur on the first Thursday of each November, was a big hit for our Maclay community.

On November 3rd, school representatives traveled to events in Jacksonville, Orlando, Atlanta, Birmingham, and New York City to host receptions. Tallahassee and Charlotte friends also gathered to share Maclay stories and memories. The oldest and youngest alums at each event were recognized and cut a ceremonial cake while a universal toast to “dear ‘ole Maclay” took place at all events at 6:30 pm.

Alumni Affairs CLASS REUNIONS CLASS OF 1976

A Visit with Mrs. Robinson Seated (left to right): Bridget Palmer Booth, Mrs. Julia Robinson, Suzanne Rich Miller, Margaret Black Groves. Standing: Rhett Miller and Carl Vinson Not pictured but also visiting were Jesse Suber, Margie Perry (and her mother), Nancy Stone Poznansky and husband Joel.

Dear Maclay After months of back and forths among the Class of 1976 Alumni, people, places, and things began coming together on Friday night October 28 as many gathered to watch the Marauders take the gridiron, many seeing this sight for the first time ever. There were many blank stares at first with those of us who had not seen each other for 40 years, but by halftime, when many of our class’s female athletes were recognized for Maclay’s first two state championships in volleyball & basketball, we had all returned to form and the fun was on. Hurricane’s down Thomasville Road was a hoot as some of us dared to dance along to pop tunes such as Gloria & What I Like About You! Mark Harrison made sure his custom made class reunion banner made it to all the weekend’s events. Lacy Douglas & Mark Harrison were lone fitness buffs at the Lake Overstreet Trail and did pay tribute to those classmates who have gone on before us. As many arrived at the school for the Hall of Fame induction, Bill Jablon proudly gave us a tour of the campus and new additions and brought us up to date on the state of the school. At the Hall of Fame event our two state championship teams were recognized and inducted into the Maclay Hall of Fame. We had no idea at the time that these state championships were so historically significant and Margaret Black Groves did a great job of remembering that time as the teams were introduced. After the Hall of Fame luncheon about a dozen classmates paid a visit to a favorite class mother, Julia Robinson, and enjoyed her usual humor and hospitality. With no rest for the weary, Bill and Mary Ann Bryant hosted a rousing party on Lake Ridge Road that afternoon

from 3-6 where drop- ins from other classes and special teachers Bettie Jane Grant and Seniorita LaBarbara made the occasion. Mrs. Grant passed around her phone so we could all have a virtual visit with Bettie Kathryn (en route to Antarctica) via Skype. As always, Lake Jackson was beautiful and Mark Suber’s food delicious. Hugs, tears, and general happiness escalated as the afternoon wore on. All in all, there was a true sense of appreciation and affirmation among all. (Mark Harrison was overheard thanking Nancy Stone and Bridget Palmer for their efforts back in the day in collaborating with more difficult subject matters.) As the Florida State / Clemson game loomed, a few departed, some stayed back but nobody really wanted the day to end. Still wanting to make the most of our time together a group ventured to Island Wing Company to enjoy a beautiful evening under the stars while sitting around the cozy firepit and regaling more stories from our Maclay days. The last hurrah was our Sunday Farewell Brunch at Tallahassee’s favorite restaurant, Kool Beanz in Midtown. Delicious Shrimp and Grits and Eggs Benedict were enjoyed by our small party. As we all headed back to the four corners of the United States it was easily said that the weekend was well worth the effort, and that 40 years is really nothing, as we all pretty much picked up our friendships right where we left off. What a place Maclay was during the mid-seventies! Most of us agreed how crucial the experience was during our formative years. Most also agreed in saying, “see you in ten”! Mark Harrison

Alumni Affairs CLASS REUNIONS CLASS OF 1981 The Mighty Class of ’81! A small but mighty group from the Class of 1981 gathered during Homecoming Week for its 35th reunion. Class members met at The Wine Loft and actually had trouble recognizing each other! (It’s been a long time!) A surprise visit from distinguished alumnus Derek Jones and his sister Crystal Jones helped light up the night. And when the night was over, it turned out that one group had been upstairs and one group was downstairs, so we actually had two reunions. But the next night the groups united at a classmate’s home for a tailgate potluck before the FSU-Clemson game. “Potluck” isn’t really the right word when Karl Suber is a classmate. He provided a feast of gourmet shrimp and other homemade goodies. We laughed a lot looking through old yearbooks and remembering crazy times in the Senior Bus, the Champagne Jam, English with Mr. Haydel, nights at Rhoden Cove and Miller’s Landing. We reminisced about teachers like Dr. Kathy Scott, Mme Allaire, Mrs. Wagner, Mr. Peck, Mrs. Carrabino, and Dr. Lewis (who almost quit teaching after just one semester with us!) We compared notes about children and grandchildren (Van Buchan, who couldn’t attend, seems to have the record at 5 grandchildren!) Retired Colonel Steve Rushing regaled us with stories about working at the White House and traveling around the world. Sunday offered the opportunity to support classmate Linda Lea, executive producer of the television series “Chopped Junior,” at a benefit for Whole Child Leon, the non-profit vision of classmate Loranne Ausley. We missed all those who couldn’t be there, but look forward to the 40th!

CLASS OF 1986 Class of ’86 Gathers for Their 30th! Members of the Class of 1986 came together for Homecoming at Maclay and headed to Island Wings for a post game gathering. The following evening the 1986 reunion continued at Hurricane Grill. David Haworth came the farthest and Michele (Cromer) Penny made the biggest effort to come. Special thanks to Rob Angerer and Blair Bailey for their planning. It was great to reconnect with each other, with former teachers and the Maclay community. Go Marauders! Michael Sheedy

Alumni Affairs CLASS REUNIONS CLASS OF 1996 Class of 1996 – It’s been 20 years! Even though many classmates weren’t able to attend our 20-‐year reunion, we still had some attendees that traveled from Orlando, Canada and even London! Of course we had some Tally folks who joined in on the fun, too. Homecoming week is still filled with themed costume days, but now also has a parade around campus that ends with a pep rally, alumni tailgate and the Friday night football game. After watching the Marauders on the field, we gathered at the Bar @ Betton for some extended time to catch up and reflect with old friends. Saturday included a courtyard dedication, campus tour, and Hall of Fame luncheon for alumni and distinguished guests. Then, we met up again for the afternoon at Island Wing Company where we enjoyed the nice fall weather under a cabana. There were plenty of stories and laughs after looking at our senior yearbook and some last minute group photos to add to our Maclay albums. I still can’t believe that it’s been 20 years since we would see each other almost every day, but it sure was great to see some of those True Blue smiles for the weekend! Andrea Roberts Morris

CLASS OF 2006 Class of 2006 – Our 10 Year Reunion! On Thursday evening, members of the Class of 2006 gathered at the home of classmate Andrea (Combs) LaBeaud for a bonfire and fireside treats. It was a perfect evening for a fire, with temperatures in the mid-50s. On Friday, after attending the homecoming football game and watching the presentation of the homecoming court and crowning of the king and queen, class members gathered at the Liberty Restaurant and Bar to reminisce and catch up. Class members enjoyed seeing some whom they had not seen in many years. L-R: Katie McQueen Amaker, Noy Ashkenazy, and Whitney Smith Ellis

Maclay Alumni Courtyard with the Distinguished Alumni Wall and Legacy Walkway

The pavers are available only to Maclay alumni and each paver is engraved with an alum’s name and graduation year. The funds raised from the sale of these brick pavers go primarily towards a scholarship and/or financial assistance for Maclay students. The Courtyard and Walkway were dedicated during Homecoming & Reunion Weekend on October 29, 2016. It would be great to add your name to the walkway!! To Order Online, go to: https://maclayfund.com/alumnicourtyard. html

This beautiful new addition to the Maclay campus is located around the historic Maclay landmark – the Maclay Oak Tree – which has long been a symbol of Maclay and its traditions. Included in the courtyard is the Distinguished Alumni Wall with plaques honoring those alums who have received the Distinguished Alumnus Award. There is also the Legacy Walkway composed of brick pavers that connect the courtyard to the Upper School. This walkway is where all alumni can be a part of Maclay’s history and legacy.
