LITERACY PROGRAMMES
Levels 4, 5 & 6
MIDDLE TO UPPER PRIMARY READING AGES 8.8–13.5 YEARS
The higher levels of Springboard focus on the needs and interests of older students and can be used as a core component of a guided reading programme, in small group literature activities and in individualised reading programmes. Springboard can be the main reading resource or as part of a wider school literacy programme. With a mature look and feel, Springboard Levels 4–6 focus on the needs and interests of upper primary students. The chapter structure of the fiction and the engaging spread designs of the factual texts make them a practical resource for guided reading sessions. The wide range of text types covered in each level can be used to model the structural framework of a specific genre. The chapter books include a mixture of suspense, humour and realistic fiction. The topical themes in the factual texts are used to enhance students’ literacy competencies and the books can be easily integrated into other curriculum areas. The books can be used: • as a core component of a guided reading programme • in small group literature circle activities • in individualised reading programmes
Teacher’s Notes The Student’s Books are supported by practical resource materials that make planning easy. Reading strategies included in the Teacher’s Notes increase in complexity as students move through the series. They include quick and easy guided-reading, text-type and multiple-intelligence activities that cater for the individual needs of students.

COURSES
Macmillan
English Mary Bowen, Printha Ellis, Liz Hocking, Wendy Wren, Louis Fidge Macmillan English is the first International English course to be informed by English lessons in native-speaker classrooms. It combines best-practice L1 and best-practice L2 methodology to meet the needs of today’s teachers and learners. Macmillan English recognises that proficiency in English is an essential part of modern life, and that early exposure to rich and genuine language allows young learners to move confidently towards native-speaker fluency in both oral and written English.
Key features • CD-ROM for each level provides further consolidation of grammar and vocabulary • Beautifully illustrated Fluency Book helps children develop natural intonation and provides stimulus for speaking • Exciting 18-episode adventure story in the Fluency Book keeps young learners motivated to see what happens next • Collaborative and independent writing tasks build confidence and promote cooperative learning • A rich variety of text types and related tasks ensure students develop higher-order reading skills from an early stage • EAL (English as an Additional Language) – the mix of L1 and L2 methodology makes the course ideal for use in classrooms that follow the UK’s National Literacy Framework. For more details see www.macmillanenglish.com/eal TEACHER TRAINING DVD available on request
The reading text provides a model for the writing task. Children learn writing skills such as note-taking, helping them to study other subjects in English. Topics are cross-curricular and reflect the real world

The Springboard into Comprehension series is based on an explicit teaching framework: Step 1.
Explicit instruction
In this phase, the teacher explains to students why the specific skill or strategy helps with comprehension and when to apply the strategy. The skill definition is included in the Teacher’s Notes, at the back of each Student’s Book and on the IWB and Assessment CDs.
Step 2.
Modelling the comprehension skill
The Comprehension Skills Big Books and the IWB and Assessment CDs are used to model and demonstrate how to apply specific comprehension skills and strategies. Both teachers and students can write on the laminated pages as they actively interact with the text. Supporting Graphic Organiser Comprehension Activity Photocopiables help students organise their information.
Step 3.
Guided practice with the skill
Students are assisted in practising the strategy until they can apply it independently in the guided-practice phase. The Comprehension Skills Practice Photocopiables in the Teacher’s Notes offer students additional practice before they move onto the Student’s Books.
Step 4.
Applying the skill
Students read the Student’s Books with the teacher in the applying phase, allowing them to apply and practise the comprehension skill.
Step 5.
Assessing the skill
In the assessing phase, students reflect on what they have learnt and complete assessment tasks to monitor their level of understanding.
The Guide Notes at the back of each Student’s Book provide opportunities to develop and consolidate knowledge of the specific comprehension skill.

People of the world
Herdsmen of northern Europe
Old customs in the modern world
Reading
People live in all parts of the world. Most people live in towns and cities but other people live hundreds of kilometres from the nearest city. They live on high mountains. They live in hot deserts and on snowy plains. They keep animals for food. They make their clothes and homes. They are different to people who live in large towns and cities because they do not need lots of shops, cars and lorries. They do not use much electricity or water.
Farmers of Tibet The Tibetan people live near the highest mountain in the world. Some Tibetans are nomads. They keep sheep and goats. Tibetan farmers use yaks on their farms. The yaks pull carts and ploughs.
Weavers of South America The Incas lived in Peru in South America. Five hundred years ago they were very rich and powerful. They had many large cities and they were good fighters. They had gold, silver and jewels. They kept many animals and they had good food and clothes. Then explorers from Spain came. They fought the Incas and captured their king. After that, the Spanish ruled over the Incas. Each village has its own special patterns.
The Sami people live in north Europe. It is very cold in winter and there is always a lot of snow on the ground. Some Sami people are nomads. That means they travel from one place to another. They keep big herds of reindeer. They live in tents and when the reindeer need new grass, they pack up their tents and move on.
Yaks are strong animals.
Children learn the patterns. They weave thin ribbons.
Tibetans enjoy plays with music and dance. The actors wear amazing costumes and masks.
Travellers in the desert The Bedouin people live in hot places. Some Bedouin travel through the desert. Like the Sami people, they keep animals and live in tents. When they move the animals, they can take their tents with them. They hunt with falcons so their families have more food. Nowadays not many Bedouin live in the desert all the time. Many of them live in houses in towns and villages but they still fly falcons in the desert.
The Incas spoke the Quechua language. Quechua people are still living in Peru today. They keep sheep and goats in the mountains. They get wool from the animals. They spin the wool and weave it into cloth. They make patterns in the cloth. The patterns are like the old Inca patterns. Women carry their babies or fruit and vegetables in the cloth. Men carry firewood and corn.

Guided Reading Magazines These vibrant, high-interest magazines contain short texts for guided reading. Built around engaging topics that capture students’ attention, they are at the centre of the Literacy Network programme. The three modules in each magazine have a specific genre and comprehension focus, presented via short texts – newspaper articles, diary entries, letters, stories, factual recounts, etc. This provides samples to model, practise and consolidate knowledge. The skills introduced in the Guided Reading Magazines are reinforced in the related Topic Books (packed together), Writing Workshop CDs and Listening Post Audio CDs. In each pack there are 16 copies of the magazine. Assessment is cross-referenced in the Teacher’s Resource Book.

Topic Books Based on the same topics as the Guided Reading Magazines, and packaged together, these fiction and non-fiction books provide a stimulating source of extra content for students to read independently. They can also be used to reinforce the genre and/ or comprehension skills introduced in the magazine. Each pack contains eight copies of three Topic Books.
Writing Workshop CDs Integral to the Literacy Network programme, these CDs provide explicit teaching strategies for developing writing skills using an IWB. Four CDs (with an unlimited site licence) are provided for both the Middle and Upper Primary levels, with each CD covering a genre introduced in the Guided Reading Magazine. Web 2.0 activities are suggested and photocopiable worksheets provide additional tasks.
Grammar and Conventions CDs These innovative CDs (with an unlimited site licence) and photocopiable worksheets are designed to consolidate and practise a wide range of grammar and writing conventions. The content can be used to introduce a new aspect of grammar or to reinforce grammatical conventions, with the structure following the model–practise–apply method. The activities can be undertaken by a small group in front of an IWB, or independently on a computer.
Listening Post CDs Created to develop students’ listening skills, encourage discussion and consolidate comprehension skills, these CDs match the genres covered in the Guided Reading Magazines and include activity sheets focusing on the comprehension skills introduced in the Magazines and Topics Books.
Critical Literacy Boxes These high-interest novels are accompanied by Activity Cards that students can undertake independently to develop their critical literacy skills. Each box contains: • 60 books – six copies of ten paperback novels • six copies of ten Critical Literacy Activity Cards • answer cards for teachers.
Teacher’s Resource Books With teaching ideas for all components in the Literacy Network series, each Teacher’s Resource Book ensures teachers have a clear pathway to deliver a balanced literacy approach in the classroom. The ideas can be used flexibly or followed step-by-step. Two assessment photocopiable worksheets are included for each module of the Guided Reading Magazines.

Joanne Ramsden and Helen Sanderson Macmillan Natural and Social Science is a new six-level course for children studying science in English. The course develops children’s knowledge of science, history and geography as well as providing systematic development of English language skills. The activities are varied in their approach to provide a motivating stimulus to children’s learning and cater for differences in learning styles. A key feature of the course is the development of English language skills alongside science content. Language and vocabulary are carefully graded and introduced within the science context. The language is integrated into each topic and summarised at the start of each unit and lesson. All four skills of speaking, listening, reading and writing are introduced and built on.

Macmillan Mathematics
A masterclass in Primary Mathematics Macmillan Mathematics is a six-level Primary Mathematics course designed to meet the needs of international learners. The course bridges the gap between mainstream curriculum teaching and CLIL (Content and Language Integrated Learning) or English-medium teaching. It aims to introduce mathematics in a simple and interesting way, with clearly structured lessons and colourful and appealing artwork. Multi-leveled tasks help children apply what they’ve learnt to the real world.
The course package for each level includes two Pupil’s Books with an interactive Pupil’s CD-ROM. The Teacher’s Guide includes facsimiles of the Pupil’s Book pages, answers to all the exercises, and supportive lesson notes to ensure that teachers get the most out of the course and their pupils.
Pupil’s Book 1A
Macmillan Mathematics caters for mixed ability classes and is designed to stimulate different types of mathematical thinking. ‘Try This’ boxes offer new challenges for fast finishers and provide more practice for other learners. Assess and review sections, in addition to the core teaching units, encourage further practice and consolidation of skills, and give teachers an effective way of evaluating their pupils’ progress.
