A love of learning, reading and innovation has always been our mission since the very beginning.
“I thought it worthwhile to plant a seed. If a large tree grows from this small seed, we shall be grateful. Daniel Macmillan, 1843 4
Celebrating 175 years of Macmillan When brothers Daniel and Alexander Macmillan founded their publishing company in 1843, they created a place that would recognise and value great contemporary writing. They soon made their mark on the literary world, publishing a range of works by extraordinary authors: Lewis Carroll, Alfred Lord Tennyson, Thomas Hardy and Rudyard Kipling to name but a few. As the company grew, so did the two brothers’ belief in the importance of learning. They launched the scientific research journal Nature, followed by the Palgrave imprint, promoting education and academic scholarship around the world. When former British Prime Minister Harold Macmillan became Chairman in the middle of the twentieth century, he decided education should be a key focus area for the organisation. With his vision, the company established itself as a world-leading educational publisher with an outstanding reputation.
175 years later, we are building on the Macmillan brothers’ commitment to learning and innovation and celebrating the progress that has been made in education globally thanks to their vision. Their love of learning, reading and education is as relevant today as it was in the 19th century and we are proud to be continuing their work as we lead the way in pioneering and forward-thinking solutions for teachers and students across the world.
The beautiful art deco design featured on the opposite page incorporates the letters MM & Co and was regularly used on dust jackets, book spines and covers from about 1911 to 1937. The designer is unknown, but it may have been the Art Director of James Burn who created many other Macmillan logos. We will be releasing more historic Macmillan logos in 2018 as part of the Macmillan Heritage Collection.

LORENA PEIMBERT, MYRIAM MONTERRUBIO
Bebop is a 3-level preschool course that teaches English in a playful way. COLEEN DEGNAN-VENESS
JENNIFER GASCOIGNE
Italy has a rich history of empires and great-thinkers, and has been a center for Western culture for thousands of years. Italian art, fashion and food are extremely popular with the rest of the world, and tourists love to visit the exciting cities and beautiful countryside. Italians are very proud of their country, and in this book we invite you to discover why.
As well as being a big country, Australia is home to some of the world’s biggest things: Uluru, the largest rock in the world; the Great Barrier Reef, the world’s largest coral reef system; and the saltwater crocodile, the world’s biggest reptile. Not content with naturally occurring things, the Australians have actually built a number of ‘Big Things’ themselves as tourist attractions, including the Big Banana, the Big Merino and, the biggest of all Australia’s Big Things, Larry the Lobster.

Digital/Electronic results are available online within 20 working days of taking the test. DTES candidates gain the added benefit of receiving an offcial SEP/DGAIR certificate based on the result achieved, the selected exam and band indicated.
The purpose of these tests is to measure candidates’ ability in the English language across each of the 4 skill areas.
Unequal results may be awarded by a RedNova statement of results only.
DTES items are designed by experts in EFL assessment and have been subject to rigorous validation to ensure a reliable assessment of candidates’ language level. DTES have also been carefully benchmarked to the CENNI standards as well as to the Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR) and to the Canadian Language Benchmarks (CLB) levels.
There are three exams in the battery: DTES 1, 2 and 3.

It does not allow the copying of entire books or the making of multiple copies of extracts. In some countries it is possible for schools to do a limited amount of photocopying under the terms of a licence issued by a licensing agency such as the Copyright Licensing Agency (CLA) in the UK. The other circumstances in which photocopying of copyright material is permitted is when the publisher has designated a book or part of a book ‘photocopiable’. This special permission is always indicated clearly in the book both at the front and on every photocopiable page. Many of the Teacher’s Books that accompany Macmillan courses contain such ‘photocopiable’ material. Under no circumstances may schools photocopy materials for use in self-access centers, unless they have registered with the Copyright Licensing Agency or an associated licensing agency and allow/use photocopying strictly in accordance with their regulations.

If a school wishes to have multiple copies of a part of a book in a self-access center then it must purchase the necessary number of printed books. There is no formal objection to schools physically cutting printed texts into parts and re-assembling them in any way that seems appropriate, providing the books or parts of books are not then resold. It is not, however, a practice we would recommend. In the case of audio recordings, it is permissible for a school to make a copy of an audio tape or CD, keeping the original as back-up. Only one copy may exist at any one time. A school may copy different parts of an original audio tape or CD onto several cassettes, providing that no part of the original exists in more than one copy at any one time. Therefore, if a school wishes to have three copies of one part of an audio tape or CD, it must have three originals. No copying, single or multiple, of video cassettes is permitted.
