Dear teaching colleagues, At Macmillan, we turn theory into reality in the ELT classroom. Our publishing philosophy is about taking the current trends and methodologies and making them accessible through our textbooks and teaching materials.

For students to succeed in this dynamic and global world, they need to become competent not only in English, but also in higher-order skills that apply to their academic, professional and social lives. Macmillan’s young adult courses provide learners with essential life skills to prepare and empower them to function effectively within their wider social, cultural and economic environments.

We have adopted a blended learning approach, creating f2f and digital materials of the highest quality, to ensure that your students learn in Julie Kniveton Publishing Director, Latin America a media-rich environment. At young adult and professional level, all of our courses are supported by digital materials, ranging from DVDROMs to online study programs (Macmillan Practice Online), created to accompany specific series. We also produce MPO courses to complement many of our exam practice courses, as well as general English MPO courses that are benchmarked to the Common European Framework of Reference. In order to meet the growing demand for customizable online study aids, Macmillan has created Macmillan English Campus, a ground-breaking virtual learning environment with over 4,200 online resources. onestopenglish.com is our award-winning website for teachers and offers access to downloadable resources, tips, articles, CLIL material, and the hugely successful Teacher’s Forum. Macmillan also has companion websites to accompany our main series, and resource sites providing information and materials to complement our range of methodology, professional English titles, and dictionaries. This year, the company is publishing a brand new, free, online dictionary, creating opportunities to combine print and digital resources to suit individual requirements. In keeping with the most recent trends and methodologies, we aim to promote, through our courses, real-life competencies and skills that will ensure that students are completely prepared for life beyond the classroom walls. These competencies are developed through personalization and real-life language tasks which help students develop life skills that will be of key importance for their success in an increasingly competitive and globalized world. Our series also aim to help learners develop crucial skills needed to write effectively in English at college and in the world of work. All Macmillan materials are benchmarked to international (CEFR) and national (CENNI) standards. These standards increasingly influence the way English is taught and learned in educational institutions and universities across Latin America. We trust our materials to satisfy your needs in the classroom – and beyond! If you have any questions or feedback, please contact us at elt@grupomacmillan.com. Steve Taylore-Knowles

“A student’s experience of learning English has to be seen in the wider context of their whole education. In developing openMind, we have carefully integrated two aspects of this: i) learning English needs to be personalized, and ii) the student needs to develop life skills in preparation for using English in the real world beyond the classroom. This course will allow students to ‘open their minds’ to the possibilities of English.”

What makes Straightforward special?

Straightforward is a flexible, six-level course based on observation of what good teachers really do in the classroom. The course takes adult and young adult learners from beginner to advanced level. Topics are introduced through a personalized speaking task and vocabulary is presented and practiced in context.

• The series is benchmarked to the Common European Framework, with 12 ‘can do’ checklists per level so students can self-evaluate and monitor their progress in specific areas • Straightforward MPO provides over 100 resources per level, including language exercises, skills practice and web projects, so students can take advantage of cutting edge practice from any computer with internet access • One of the most comprehensive Teacher’s Books on the market, written by best-selling author Jim Scrivener, features teaching tips, methodology sections, and an integrated Resource Pack • The www.macmillanenglish.com/straightforward resource site gives teachers access to a wealth of support materials • The fully interactive CD-ROM, complete with grammar and vocabulary references, gives students learner autonomy outside the classroom and is IWB-compatible for class use • A complete writing course, with model texts and practical writing tasks, is included in the Workbook • Portfolios for each level: A5 learner diaries containing exercises that follow the Student’s Book topics to help students build vocabulary and language functions for the CEF learning aims. They include self-assessment material and a ‘can do’ checklist section.

Methodology The course aims to provide motivating material and tasks to make classroom management easier: • Functional language lessons directly reflect the communicative needs outlined in the Common European Framework (CEF). • Self assessment checklists encourage students to reflect on their language learning and language needs. • Straightforward promotes learner independence, encourages students to work cooperatively through a wide variety of activities, and uses topics, texts and tasks which develop students’ knowledge of, and respect for, other cultures.

Skills development is through discrete, clearly defined activities, while those activities which relate directly to the Competency Framework are also clearly labelled, with special attention given to the six areas of generic competencies, which are highlighted using easily-recognizable icons. All topics in the book are authentic and up-to-date; by the end of the course students will have developed a range of skills that can be applied to all areas of study, including life beyond the classroom.

The video comprises a variety of genres, including documentaries, interviews, and vox pops. It is benchmarked to the Common European Framework.

Booklet

Each DVD is accompanied by an 8-page booklet that provides teachers with at-a-glance information, offering a synopsis of each of the video segments and a detailed table of target grammar and vocabulary. The booklet also includes general and level-specific tips on how to teach with video.

Each video segment is accompanied by a downloadable worksheet (2 pages) and teacher’s notes (including answer key). They prepare, present, and develop the material in the video.

Each worksheet offers three core sections: • Before you watch – introduces and generates interest in the topic. It offers 1-2 activities focusing on prediction, brainstorming, and new vocabulary. • While you watch – focuses on comprehension, with a variety of matching tasks, ordering activities, gap fills, True/False activities, checking/crossing assignments, etc. • After you watch – focuses on speaking and/ or writing tasks directly linked to the content of the video. It includes activities such as roleplays, summarizing, and peer discussions. The worksheets also focus consistently on developing two special features: • Language points – presents and practices language commonly used as a social facilitator (and often not taught in student’s books), for example, expressions such as “What’s up?” and “Let’s grab a coffee.” • Your viewpoint – presents a statement or question for discussion in the context of the video, allowing students to personalize and express their own opinions. Dear colleague, We all know that as our world becomes more competitive and globalized, our students need to be able to communicate effectively in English in order to succeed. Knowledge of the English language opens doors to study abroad or to higher-paying jobs. One major problem students have is how to prove their true knowledge of English to a potential university program or employer. What is ‘intermediate’ in one school can be ‘high beginner’ or even ‘advanced’ in another and no one knows what having an 80% command of a language really means. Students and professionals need valid English-level certification which could be issued internationally or by the Secretaría de Educación Pública (SEP). There are a number of internationally recognized examinations of English proficiency that have been designed to solve the problem of substantiating one’s language level. Many are based on international standards, such as the Common European Framework (CEF) or national frames of reference like the Mexican framework (CENNI), and are comparable in quality. However, there are definite differences among the tests available today. Consider the answers to the following questions when you are looking for an examination: »» »» »» »» »» »» »»

Who has the exam been designed for (young learners, high school, university students or professionals)? What document do you get from the examining organization: a constancia, certificate or diploma? Does the exam cover all four language skills and if not, which ones does it test? Are preparation courses necessary before taking the examination in order to ensure satisfactory results? How long is the certificate, constancia or diploma valid? Where are the testing centers? How much does the exam cost?

MACMILLAN ENGLISH DICTIONARY New Edition Michael Rundell (Editor-in-Chief) A1 A2 B1 B2 C1 C2 The second edition of the Macmillan English Dictionary contains a wealth of new material, while building on the innovative features that won it two prestigious awards.

Gwyneth Fox (Associate Editor) Like its predecessor, the new MED focuses on three main aspects of language learning: • receptive tasks: understand the meaning of words you read and hear • productive tasks: write and speak natural English, accurately and with confidence • language awareness: become a better learner by understanding how English works

• The clear distinction it makes between high-frequency core vocabulary and the less common words needed mainly for reference. The MED is the only learner’s dictionary to highlight effectively the most important 7,500 words an advanced learner needs to be able to use. • The MED differentiates between the receptive and productive needs of advanced learners: - The essential 7,500 red words are graded with stars to show at once how important each word is. Advanced learners need a wide range of information so they can use this vocabulary accurately: not only meaning, but also how words combine (collocations), what registers they usually appear in, and what they tell us about the speaker’s attitude. - This core ‘productive’ vocabulary is contrasted with the tens of thousands of less frequent ‘receptive vocabulary’ words, which few users will ever need to use actively. This receptive vocabulary is printed in black with much shorter definitions. • The MED also contains about 6,000 clearly labeled, subject-specific words, with a focus on five key subject areas: business and economics, science, information technology, medicine, and the arts. • The MED was created with expert advice – at every stage of the writing process, experienced teachers, coursebook writers and language students contributed suggestions and comments, providing detailed information about what learners really need to know.

• hundreds of new words (satnav, greenwash, carbon trading, adspend, crystal meth, cyberlaw, geoeconomics) • many more collocations, synonyms and antonyms • extra clearly-labelled subject-specific vocabulary (equity capital, faultline, heritage language, link rot, culture medium) • multi-page vocabulary building sections on the themes of movement, communication and emotions • a complete package of unique, carefully researched materials based on a detailed analysis of learners’ own writing. Full-page Improve your Writing sections and Get it right boxes help you write with confidence in academic and professional situations • An innovate new Thesaurus section

Using innovative software, lexicographers have based the Macmillan English Dictionary on a unique modern corpus of over 200 million words created in the late 1990s, the World English Corpus. This new edition has added to the corpus through collaboration with the CECL at the Université Catholique de Louvain in Belgium.

What types of texts are included in the Corpus? Academic discourse, print and broadcast journalism, fiction, recorded conversations (including telephone calls), recorded business meetings, general non-fiction, voicemail messages, emails, legal texts, academic seminars, cultural studies texts, radio documentaries, broadcast interviews, ELT coursebooks, and texts written by learners of English (including essays and exams).

What does the Corpus contain? • examples of real spoken and written English from a variety of sources across the English-speaking world. • examples of the English written by advanced learners from all over the world, which highlight the most common problems that learners experience. • examples of the English currently found in English language coursebooks and readers, which help identify the core vocabulary that teachers and learners need in the classroom.

What is the CECL? The Centre for English Corpus Linguistics focuses on the development and exploitation of learner corpora. These corpora provide the dictionary writers with information about real learners’ problems, which has been used to, for example, highlight and exemplify correct collocations; present alternatives to frequentlyused core-vocabulary; provide notes on the differences between easily confused words; and offer specific warnings to alert learners to typical incorrect usage.

World English Corpus: a unique modern database of over 200 million words created from British, American and Australian texts, including material from learners of English, and from ELT coursebooks.

METHODOLOGY

Macmillan BOOKS for teachers Scott Thornbury

Author Spotlight Scott Thornbury

Who is it for?

• Trainee teachers for whom the terminology and concepts may be new • Teachers who want to refresh their knowledge or find out more about the history or the various views on teaching concepts and methodology • Teacher trainers who want to give clear definitions of terms and concepts

Extracts of Scott’s book appear in the Teacher’s Edition for New American Inside Out (see pages 8-9). “We couldn’t decide whether to call the book a dictionary, or an encyclopaedia... Eventually someone at Macmillan came up with the title An A-Z of ELT. And while teaching on an MA program in the US, I discovered that the title is pronounced An A to Zee of ELT, which sounds much more harmonious than An A to Zed!”

Beyond the Sentence

Scott Thornbury takes discourse apart to show how it is structured and how we use these structures in comprehending meanings. More importantly, he shows how insights into discourse affect our work as language teachers, and how to transform theories into practical classroom activities.

Discover English

Rod Bolitho and Brian Tomlinson This text highlights and explores selected areas of grammar and vocabulary with exercises and commentaries.

Learning Teaching New Edition Jim Scrivener

Not only a superb teaching textbook for initial training courses, it is also a no-nonsense handbook for practicing ELT teachers, packed with practical and immediately usable activities.

Author Spotlight Jim Scrivener also wrote the Straightforward Teacher’s Books (see pages 12-13). To find out more about Jim, visit www.macmillanenglish.com/straightforward/authors.htm

Blended Learning Using technology in and beyond the language classroom Pete Sharma and Barney Barrett The ideal companion for teachers interested in using technology in the language classroom, Blended Learning provides an overview of the technology currently available. It combines basic information for the technological novice with sophisticated ideas for using technology in the classroom.

An A-Z of ELT An A-Z of ELT is a fully cross-referenced, alphabetical guide to ELT that defines and explains essential concepts and terminology from fields including grammar, linguistics, discourse analysis and phonology. Pete Sharma

“The first thing we discovered when we began to write is that the term ‘Blended Learning’ means different things to different people. Not only that, but it is a dynamic term, constantly in a state of flux; since we finished the book, another meaning has evolved! Luckily, the book is regularly updated on the web. For us, the term has a positive connotation: combining the best that the teacher can give with the best that technology has to offer. In our view, one plus one is more than two!”

METHODOLOGY

Teaching Practice

Uncovering Grammar Scott Thornbury

This book challenges the traditional view of grammar as something to be learned, suggesting that it is more like a process that emerges. It shows how to create the right conditions for students to uncover grammar.

500 Activities for the Primary Classroom Teaching Reading Skills in a foreign language Christine Nuttall

Christine Nuttall examines the skills required to read effectively, and suggests classroom strategies for developing reading skills and testing reading.

Carol Read

700 Classroom Activities Uncovering CLIL

Content and Language Integrated Learning in bilingual and multilingual education Peeter Mehisto, Maria-Jesus Frigols and David Marsh CLIL refers to methodologies in which a language is used as a medium for the teaching of non-language content. Uncovering CLIL is a guide for both language and subject teachers to the methodologies and techniques involved in CLIL teaching. Packed with practical ideas and suggestions about what works in the classroom, it features explanations and examples of how to use CLIL at primary, secondary and vocational levels.

How to teach academic reading and writing Sam McCarter and Phil Jakes Uncovering EAP explains, through concise theoretical overviews, the processes involved in teaching academic writing and reading to students going on to further study in an English-speaking environment. It includes an extensive range of practical activities and worksheets which teachers can use in their classrooms, as well as case studies of real-life challenges faced by EAP teachers, with suggestions on how to tackle them.

This easy-to-use reference book provides 700 classroom-tested activities for students of all levels, organized into four clear sections: conversations, functions, grammar and vocabulary.

Information Copying According to the International Copyright Act of 1976, the law allows a reader to make a single copy of a part of a book for purposes of private study. It does not allow the copying of entire books or the making of multiple copies of extracts. In some countries it is possible for schools to do a limited amount of photocopying under the terms of a licence issued by a licensing agency such as the Copyright Licensing Agency (CLA) in the UK. The other circumstances in which photocopying of copyright material is permitted is when the publisher has designated a book or part of a book ‘photocopiable’. This special permission is always indicated clearly in the book both at the front and on every photocopiable page. Many of the Teacher’s Books that accompany Macmillan courses contain such ‘photocopiable’ material. Under no circumstances may schools photocopy materials for use in self-access centres, unless they have registered with the Copyright Licensing Agency or an associated licensing agency and allow/use photocopying strictly in accordance with their

regulations. If a school wishes to have multiple copies of a part of a book in a self-access centre then it must purchase the necessary number of printed books. There is no formal objection to schools physically cutting printed texts into parts and re-assembling them in any way that seems appropriate, providing the books or parts of books are not then resold. It is not, however, a practice we would recommend. In the case of audio recordings, it is permissible for a school to make a copy of an audio tape or CD, keeping the original as back-up. Only one copy may exist at any one time. A school may copy different parts of an original audio tape or CD onto several cassettes, providing that no part of the original exists in more than one copy at any one time. Therefore, if a school wishes to have three copies of one part of an audio tape or CD, it must have three originals. No copying, single or multiple, of video cassettes is permitted.
