For the Love of Reading! “The habit of reading is the only enjoyment in which there is no alloy; it lasts when all other pleasures fade.” Anthony Trollope

Fomenting a Love of Reading For many teachers of English, a central goal of the curriculum is to foster a love of reading. An engagement with both fictional and non-fiction texts enhances the language-learning process for students of all levels and ages. Learners who have a strong, positive relationship with books are naturally more excited and motivated about reading in other languages and tend to be more successful at it. A love of reading will offer both lifelong personal and academic benefits. How can teachers nurture this love of reading in their classrooms? How can they help students fall in love with books? Here are some ideas to get students of all levels and ages engaged in extended reading. Read aloud as often as possible When a story is read aloud, the listener is much more easily engaged. The audience actively participates by entering into the fictional world, to the extent that it begins to feel real. When subsequently reading independently, this ease of imagination will intensify students’ enjoyment of reading. It will also aid the development of a relationship with the written word that may well become a lifelong source of pleasure in both their native languages and in others. Reading in English is an invaluable tool for enhancing comprehension, breadth of vocabulary, and creative expression. Build background knowledge

Offer your learners a wide variety of hands-on experiences related to what they are reading. For example, if the book your class is reading has also been made into a movie or play, it may be helpful for them to see the story told in

this medium. Museum exhibitions may enhance understanding of stories with a historical setting. Internet investigation and project work can also help illustrate the cultural background of a tale. Role-plays encourage learners to think about the situations of the fictional characters and to make them three-dimensional. As well as enriching their reading, these activities aid the languagelearning experience and present students with unique opportunities for vocabulary acquisition that may not otherwise have arisen. Let learners choose their own books Some people love pirate stories; others prefer books about outer space, or real-life adventure stories. Let students play an active part in selecting their reading material, making sure it’s appropriate for their age and reading level. When choosing a graded reader to use in class, it’s a good idea to consider your students’ backgrounds and interests, or perhaps to tie their reading in with other areas of the curriculum. This way, students will inevitably be more interested in what they’re reading. Create a reading spot Organize a comfortable, quiet area in which learners can read or be read to. This could be a corner of the classroom or a spot in the school yard. You may even decide to furnish it with inviting chairs, beanbags or pillows. Encourage students to use this quiet, peaceful area to read in their free time as well as during class. This will help to give reading positive associations. Introduce reading as an enjoyable activity. Encourage students to see reading as something relaxing and enjoyable rather than as an obligatory

or arduous task. Using reading as a reward for students who have completed other work, or ensuring that it’s accompanied by enjoyable follow-up activities, will reduce the possible stress that reading may provoke in your students, and make it something they look forward to.

How to Exploit Reading in the Language Classroom What are graded readers? For many learners, the idea of reading a book in English is understandably daunting. Graded readers are books that have had the language level simplified to make them accessible to learners. At each level, language is graded by vocabulary, complexity of grammar structures, and by the number of key words included. The length of the text is also modified according to its language level. Using graded readers in the classroom A good read can be the starting point for a range of project work. From retelling a chapter or transcribing the whole story as a comic strip, to setting up a class debate to discuss related issues, teachers can find compelling ways to bring all the language skills into lessons which are centered around reading. The Macmillan Readers resource site offers free downloadable and interactive online resources to use alongside almost all of the titles found in this catalogue. Materials include worksheets with associated answer keys, related tests, author data sheets, sample projects and more. Visit www.macmillanreaders.com to access these resources.

Selections New Edition Starters Movers Flyers KET PET PET merit Selections New Edition is a primary reading anthology designed to promote reading for pleasure, and as a way of developing language knowledge. This new edition is true to the original but has been enhanced with new sections in the Student Book and a fully revised Teacher’s Edition. Now both teachers and students can enjoy reading in a more supported environment. Key features from Selections: • This collection of original children’s literature will appeal to all readers and tastes. An extensive range of writing styles is used to expose students to a variety of genres, maximizing their understanding and appreciation of the written word. • Beautiful artwork and photographs illustrate the texts, bringing adventure stories, poems, practical activities and non-fiction texts to life.

Enhanced features of Selections New Edition: • There is a brand new section with comprehension activities for every text. Now students can consolidate their learning through a variety of written activities, challenges and puzzles. • Every text has accompanying audio on the class CD giving teachers different ways to access the material. • The Teacher’s Edition includes thoroughly reworked teacher’s notes that ensure all texts are exploited to the full. Lesson plans follow a predictable procedure and suggest activities for beforereading, while-reading and follow-up. The notes also encourage the development of reading skills such as reading for gist, scanning, and skimming. • New unit tests in the style of the Cambridge Young Learner Exams help to monitor progress and offer remedial help as necessary. The Selections anthologies play an important role in fostering literacy and language development in students as readers, speakers and listeners. An appropriate level of linguistic and conceptual challenges make this series genuinely valuable for language teaching and learning. For ISBNs, please see p62.
