FILM MAGIC IN FLAMENCO, FLAMENCO by Lisa Franek

Every now and then,

a film comes along that challenges what you think film is, and manages to reel you in until you wonder how you never thought of film in that way. Right now, that film for me is Flamenco, Flamenco. I remember when we screened it at the San Diego Latino Film Festival in 2011, and I was uncertain if anyone would see what I saw in the film, and wondered if anyone would buy a ticket. My faith in the film and our wonderful audience was fully realized when both screenings of the film were sold out. The electricity in the theater was palpable. I had never before experienced such excitement over a film with such a large group of people, and to this day, the memory of those screenings still gives me goose bumps. This month, I am once again feeling that excitement of sharing the film with San Diego audiences. While watching the film, I am overwhelmed by the sheer artistry of the dancers and musicians, the beauty and seductiveness of the Flamenco music, and the simplicity and evocativeness of the sets. But even more than that, the interactions of the performers and the camera creates a dance of such sheer poetry,

I am stunned at the genius of the makers of the film. The virtuosity of the filmmaking of Carlos Saura and graceful cinematography of Vittorio Storaro gives the film a lightness and playfulness, as the camera flows in and out of the dances. It is so effortless, you don’t even notice it. You only know that you are seeing something rare and special. Flamenco, Flamenco, for me, represents such a perfect culmination of the arts. The dancers, the musicians, the music, the visuals, and the cinematography combine so sublimely, so creatively, and so uniquely, that it becomes more than just a movie. It is art within art within art. It is a film that reaches the zenith of what is possible in filmmaking, and then kicks it up a notch by making everything look effortless, as if anyone could do it. It is subtle and relaxing, but also exciting and electrifying. This is why I love film, and this is why it moves us. I am incredibly proud to bring Flamenco, Flamenco to San Diego, and I truly hope that you will share this amazing film with us, and with your friends. Enjoy.
