Campers Get Techie

Kids at MACSD’s Youth Media & Tech Camp learn new kinds of media.

MACSD’s

newest instructor, Evan Apodaca is encouraging campers to look at existing media around them in a different way: through familiar computer games, video editing techniques, and file formats. Campers have been working on how to manipulate hardware, bend circuits, and edit source code. For one project, a group of campers built and modified circuits from old toys that generate sound. In addition to simply documenting the process, the campers recorded the sound from the circuits, converted them into a computer recognizable format, modifed them with a digital synthesizing software and then created a video in response to the audio. In another movie, campers were able to parody excisting video games using greenscreen, a multi-channel video/split screen as well as edited voiceovers. Cool!

THE LEGACY OF WWII

This month our video production team continued our joint project with the Union-Tribune, “The Legacy of WWII.” We met with Beverly Newak of La Mesa and shot a video highlighting her experience as a Naval gunner instructor during WWII. Check for the complete video on the U-T website! We also traveled up to La Jolla to the Torrey Pines Glider Port to cover the San Diego Foundation’s annual meeting where over 700 San Diegans were in attendance. Be sure to come join us next month when we cover the third installment of Voice of San Diego’s art talks, “Meeting of the Minds.” The dancers are scheduled to perform “Peace of Courage” Aug. 17 and 18 at the Lyceum Theater.

ORCHID OR ONION? = beautiful

= not so beautiful

A special thanks to the Boulevard Business Improvement Association for their kind nomination of our outdoor space in the annual Orchids & Onions contest! We have been accepted as a candidate for an ‘Orchid’ in the category of sustainable design. Orchids & Onions is an educational and fundraising program of the San Diego Architectural Foundation and is the only interactive, community-based program geared towards raising awareness and encouraging practical discourse in response to San Diego’s built environment. A jury of design professionals and artists is selected annually to determine the official Orchids & Onions based upon the public’s submissions in categories which include: architecture, interior design, landscape architecture, historic preservation, sustainable design and miscellaneous. WELCOME TO BOOTCAMP youth media bootcamp, that is

Students and instructors from across Southern Californa ventured to the Media Arts Center early last month to enjoy a weekend of media-making. Thanks to a generous grant from the California Endowment for the Arts, the students used video, radio, print, blog, and photography to create news & media stories about different community issues, as well as success stories of how the community addresses a local problem.

MOBILE STORIES

www.mobilestories.org Mobile Stories is a fun and unique way for kids to learn about so-

cial media and become actively involved in their communities as citizen journalists through using iPhones and smartphones. We have been working with kids all over the city from Logan Heights to San Marcos and are continuing to venture out to various libraries around San Diego. The kids learn not only how to use the different features within Imovie but also the basic elements of filming; camera angles, sound, lighting, story board writing, and editing. The students work together by collaborating creatively and exercising their problem solving skills. They have been learning how to research and conduct interviews focusing on various subjects like the local library programs, arts & culture, bullying, community leaders, land use and traveling. Mobile Stories is giving kids a healthy way to take advantage of the influential world that social media has become by embracing the technology they have at their fingertips and combining it with the wealth of knowledge that all lies within their reach.

MEET ALLISON KEIR, MOBILE STORIES INSTRUCTOR

Originally from a small coastal town in New Hampshire with intentions of going out to make, live, create and tell stories, Allison Keir graduated from UCSD with a Bachelor Degree in History and a minor in English Literature. Allison went back to school to study screenwriting at the Massachusetts College of Art before throwing herself into the independent film world within New York City. It was in New York where she then found her place as the Creative Executive at Michael Mailer Films. While working with Michael Mailer, she worked on the two feature films. She then spent two years at Grande Pictures as the Executive Assistant in Los Angeles. Allison is actively working as an independent film Producer and Screenwriter.
