JULY 2013 The Lesser Blessed

“A true masterpiece!” - Film Threat

June 28-July 4

Larry is a Tlicho Indian growing up in the small northern town of Fort Simmer. His tongue, hallucinations and fantasies are hotter than the centre of the sun. At sixteen, he loves heavy metal music, the North and Juliet Hope, the high school “hottie”. When Johnny Beck, a Métis from Hay River, moves to town, Larry is ready for almost anything. Skinny as spaghetti, nervy and self-deprecating, Larry is an appealing mixture of bravado and vulnerability. His past holds many terrors: an abusive father, and an accident that almost killed him. But through his friendship with Johnny, and his lust for Juliet, he’s ready now to face his memories — and his future. The Lesser Blessed is an eye-opening depiction of what it is to be a young Native man in today’s modern world.

Every day dozens of decommissioned school buses leave the United States on a southward migration that carries them to Guatemala, where they are repaired, repainted, and resurrected as the brightly-colored camionetas that bring the vast majority of Guatemalans to work each day. LA CAMIONETA follows one such bus on its transformative journey: a journey between North and South, between life and death, and through an unfolding collection of moments, people, and places that serve to quietly remind us of the interconnected worlds in which we live.

Summer has just begun and 11 year-old Skunk’s afternoons are full of easy fun with the exception that she must regularly give herself injections to combat her type 1 diabetes. When, one day, Skunk (Eloise Laurence) discovers her bitter and angry older neighbor, Mr. Oswald (Rory Kinnear), savagely beating Rick, a psychologically-troubled boy from the neighborhood whom Mr. Oswald’s daughter has callously and fictitiously accused of rape, Skunk’s innocence begins to vanish. Trying to find solace with her loving nanny (Zana Marjanovic) and father (Tim Roth), Skunk is unwittingly drawn into her neighbors’ unfolding melodrama of violence, sex, and life-shattering illness. Her home, her neighborhood and her school all become treacherous environments where the happy certainties of childhood give way to doubt.

Maniac

Berberian Sound Studio

July 2, 3, 6, 7

“A masterpiece and a deserving horror classic. Elijah Wood is incredible.” - Dread Central

July 5, 6

Just when the streets seemed safe, a serial killer with a fetish for scalps is back and on the hunt. Frank (Elijah Wood) is the withdrawn owner of a mannequin store, but his life changes when young artist Anna appears asking for his help with her new exhibition. As their friendship develops and Frank's obsession escalates, it becomes clear that she has unleashed a long-repressed compulsion to stalk and kill.

Laurence Anyways

“Canada’s answer to Pedro Almodovar...” - The Hollywood Reporter

July 5-11

Laurence Anyways tells the story of an impossible love between Frederique and her long-term boyfriend Laurence, a man who reveals his inner desire to become his true self: a woman. Set during the late 1980’s and early 1990’s, the story spans a decade, chronicling the doomed love of Fred and Laurence, as well as the trials and tribulations that they face.

The Body

“Darkly fascinating” - Jonathan Holland, Variety

“seriously weird and seriously good” - Peter Bradshaw, The Guardian

July 26, 27

1976: Berberian Sound Studio is one of the cheapest, sleaziest post-production studios in Italy. Only the most sordid horror films have their sound processed and sharpened in this studio. Gilderoy, a naive and introverted sound engineer from England is hired to orchestrate the sound mix for the latest film by horror maestro, Santini. Thrown from the innocent world of local documentaries into a foreign environment fueled by exploitation, Gilderoy soon finds himself caught up in a forbidding world of bitter actresses, capricious technicians and confounding bureaucracy. Obliged to work with the hot-headed producer Francesco, whose tempestuous relationships with certain members of his female cast threaten to boil over at any time, Gilderoy begins to record the sound for 'The Equestrian Vortex', a hammy tale of witchcraft and unholy murder typical of the 'giallo' genre of horror that's all the rage in Italy.

Broche de Oro

An SDLFF 2013 favorite from Puerto Rico!

July 26 - August 1

Rafael, Elmo and Pablo run away from the strict Catholic retirement home where they live to enjoy one last weekend of debauchery and fun. Broche de Oro is a comedy road-trip of adventure and discovery. It celebrates the true power of friendship and living life to the fullest.

July 12-18

In this twisty thriller from the producers of THE ORPHANAGE, a detective searches for the body of a femme fatale which has gone missing from a morgue. His investigation turns up some frightening skeletons.
