VPS at Work

MACSD’s Ryan Kuratomi made a beautiful video for UT San Diego documenting the story of Lester Tenney, a prisoner of war in WWII’s Bataan Death March. This April marked the 70th anniversary of the grueling 80-mile trek that more than 76,000 Americans and Filipinos were ordered by the Japanese to walk. Nice work Ryan. Summer GHELP MACSD R Scholarship SCOHAOL OF PROVIEDAINCH ITS’ LARSH G Fundraiser YOUTH. IPS TO 55

MACSD is seeking donations for a first-ever “Summer Scholarship Fundraiser” for our year-round Youth Media & Tech Camps (www. mediaartscenter.org/mediacamp). Help us reach our goal of $10,000, so we can provide 55 youth with a chance to attend our camps, meet new friends, learn new skills, and more! The camps offer children in San Diego County an opportunity to learn about media arts and technology tools to use in their everyday lives, school, and future careers. For many of these youth, these types of tools and much-needed technology training is no longer offered in their schools due to the on-going school budget crisis.

TAKE BACK THE ALLEY

Join us as we reclaim our back alley and transform it into a new community space. join our efforts at www.mediaartscenter.org/takebackthealley

This is our ‘backyard’ at Media Arts Center San Diego. Not much to look at, is it?

Imagine: watching a movie outside on a big screen on a warm Summer’s night. Imagine: our youth campers being able to take a break from media- making to have a picnic lunch in the sunshine. These are our dreams to TAKE BACK THE ALLEY. Connecting to the organization’s larger mission of community development, a major goal of the new space has always been the transformation of the back area and promoting positive change in the immediate neighborhood. With numerous ‘questionable’ activities still taking place in the back alley and surrounding streets, MACSD hopes to help transform the back area and reclaim it as a community space. To make this a reality, MACSD is putting together a few upcoming “Take Back the Alley” community volunteer events. On May 31st, Thursday, 9am-4pm and on Saturday, June 2, 10am - 3pm, we will be gathering supporters to plant trees in large planter boxes/tubs, build planter boxes, build a new fence to create a secure and safe place for community participants, paint a mural on the back wall of the facility, install outdoor furniture & umbrellas for participants to work outside in Spring/Summer months, and also place a large outdoor screen for community screenings.

DONATE YOUR TIME OR MONEY TO MAKE THIS DREAM A REALITY. www.mediaartscenter.org/takebackthealley
