Wow! 18 years. Who would have believed it? The recent events in Egypt have shown us once again the empowerment of visual and social media; the need for communities to be able to have instantaneous news and information in order to organize themselves; and the importance of using today’s new media tools (i.e. cell phones, video cameras) to document the realities and events around us. If we the people don’t document our experiences, who will?

As our country slowly revives itself from the recent economic crisis, proposed budget cuts at all levels of government will present new challenges. Therefore, it is essential for ALL of us to thank the many foundations, public entities, individuals, and corporations that provide MACSD the much needed financial support to make this annual event a reality. I am deeply grateful for the dedicated efforts of volunteers, Board Members, and MACSD staff that pull this event off each year! Especially Lisa Franek, MACSD’s Exhibition & Programming Director, who is celebrating her fourth year with the film festival, and has spearheaded, among her many other tasks, the curating and programming for this year’s festival! Mil gracias. It could not be done without you!

Thus, the on-going need for a film festival like our annual San Diego Latino Film Festival, now in its 18th year. Should we wait for Hollywood and mainstream media to produce stories about Latin America, Mexico, Central America, Spain, and the U.S. Latino Experience, or can we join forces to produce and distribute these films ourselves! One’s identity, culture and history must be preserved, and SDLFF 2011 celebrates this fact. By perusing the over 160 features and short films to be screened at the festival, you’ll observe that Latino filmmakers are up to the task. Witness the many exciting historical and period movies we’re presenting this year – Hidalgo: La Historia Jamas Contada, El Atentado, Chicogrande, Besouro, and more! And, don’t miss the amazing celebration of Jewish-Latino Film & Filmmakers which is being funded by the Leichtag Family Foundation.

We’re very glad that you’ve come to the festival, and are joining some 20,000 locals, visitors and international guests. A consummate actor, singer, and comedian, López commands the rapt attention of every child in the studio and of the millions who watch his show every Sunday morning across Mexico. Such is the recognition factor of his iconic character that now López simply goes by “Chabelo,” whether in character or not. Born in 1935, he got his big break when two well-known Mexican actors (Arturo Manrique & Ramiro Gamboa) gave him a job as a gofer on their variety show to reward his curiosity and enthusiasm. While working on a sketch, they offered him the bit part of “Chabelo.” The fact that he was able to transform that minor character into a phenomenon and keep it fresh for 40 years (and counting) is a testament to his great talent. During that time, Chabelo was a Pepsi spokesman, worked in theater in New York, and produced other shows in Mexico such as “La Cuchufleta,” and “La güereja,” and “Algo más” but “Chabelo” remained a constant in his life.

Four feature films, one documentary, and a short film, offer a glimpse of Jewish Latin America. These are part of a growing body of films that show a life sometimes secluded from view, and yet always evocative of the Latin American cultural experience. In the 1990s, Jewish film protagonists increasingly shed light on the struggles and tragedies of their nations’ political turmoil. In several films, Jewish identity is molded within the context of a Jewish outsider struggling to balance his or her religious/ethnic identity with FEATURE FILMS a national identity that constrains Judaism. Their stories suggest that the Latin American Jewish experience is multi-layered - Jewish in predominantly Catholic lands; frequently TE EXTRANO (Argentina/Mexico) - p. 59 an immigrant; and often further set apart by dietary laws, language, and other cultural 15-year old Javier’s involuntary exile to Mexico after his older brother’s disappearance during traditions. SDLFF 2011 presents a showcase of the newest documentary films from throughout Latin America, Mexico, & U.S. Our documentary section has a new name: Documania! It refers as much to the eclectic slate of 13 films selected this year - ranging from the humorous (Vuelve a la vida) to the sublime (Nostalgia for the Light) - as it does to the increased popularity of documentaries in the last decade. Latin American documentary filmmakers are very much a part of this explosion, and are making films that challenge the conventional notion that documentaries are, well... boring! In that spirit, this year we have chosen films that are every bit as exciting and absorbing as feature films. Whether documenting the fight for Ethnic Studies programs in the Tucson school system (Precious Knowledge), joining an adopted Swedish man in his search for his Colombian birth family (I’m Not a Svensson Anymore), or chronicling the difficult lives of young urban poets in New York City (To Be Heard), these films will change the way you see the world and the way you think about documentaries. - Mario Diaz, Documentary Programmer

108 (CUCHILLO DE PALO) - p. 64 Costa returns to her native Paraguay 21 years after Stroessner’s fall and delves into the story of her uncle Rodolfo, a persecuted gay man found dead in his home during the dictatorship. In trying to unravel the reasons behind his death, what emerges is an intensely personal and poignant portrait of a man who dreamed of becoming a dancer in a country mired in oppression. EL AMBULANTE - p. 64 A festival crowd-pleaser, “El Ambulante” is the story of Daniel Burmeister, an unknown filmmaker who meanders through the melancholy landscapes of rural Argentina in his beat-up car making films with his S-VHS video camera and no budget. Using the local people of these small villages as actors and crew members, Burmeister then sets out to complete an entire feature film in 30 days and screen it for the local public with the idea that the true function of art is to bring communities together. THE CALLING - p. 64 In 2003, Reverend Philip Scott decided to relocate his small Catholic mission from St. Petersburg, Florida to his native country of Peru, in order to serve the poor. By focusing on how their families in the U.S. are affected by their choices, “The Calling” provides an intimate and honest look at the lives of those who serve God. CRUZ REYNOSO: SOWING THE SEEDS OF JUSTICE - p. 64 San Diego Premiere. During his extraordinary life, Cruz Reynoso has been one of those rare individuals who are not only shaped by history, but also make history. The son of farm workers, Reynoso became the first Latino to sit on the California Supreme Court and fought discrimination and inequality. Screening with “The Oak Park Story” (Dir. Valerie Soe, 2008, 22 min., USA), about a coalition of tenants in Oakland, CA who win a historic settlement against their exploitative landlord. EN LOS PASOS DE ABRAHAM - p. 64 This powerful documentary chronicles the spiritual journey of 3 young Mexican men who decide to convert to orthodox Judaism. The film alternates between Vera Cruz, where one of the men is beginning the conversion process, and Israel, where the other two now live among a Mexican Jewish community of converts. GOD WILLING - p. 64 Founded in 1971 by shadowy messianic figure Jim Roberts, the “Church” or “The Brotherhood” is a religious sect that shuttles its members from town to town, often on the run from concerned parents and family members. This documentary offers an inside look at the group as well as the struggles of families whose children renounce their past lives and rarely turn back.

NOT A SVENSSON ANYMORE - p. 65 Emilio Cuesta was born in Colombia but adopted by the Svenssons, who took him to Sweden and raised him there. PRECIOUS KNOWLEDGE - p. 65 World Premiere Lawmakers in Tuscon, Arizona have recently proposed legislature attempting to remove Ethnic Studies programs from public schools, stating that they propagate racist ideology. Step inside one of the classes and meet the students that now have vastly improved grades, a growing understanding of their own cultural identity, and a new sense of purpose, as well as the brilliant and caring teachers who inspire them. SEGUIR SIENDO: CAFE TACVBA - p. 65 Three years in the making, this first-ever documentary about the Mexican supergroup Café Tacvba captures revealing, behind-the-scenes moments of the quartet during several world tours and recording sessions. TIJUANEADOS ANONIMOS - p. 65 Meet the members of “Tijuanados Anonymous,” a 12 step program in which people from Tijuana come together to discuss their frustration with the growing dangers as well as absurdities of life in Tijuana. Topics include makeshift car repair, environmentally hazardous urban sprawl, and the violence that is overtaking the city. TO BE HEARD - p. 65 Karina, Pearl and Anthony are three New York teenagers in a radical poetry workshop called Power Writing. Putting pen to paper they’re able to imagine a future where fathers aren’t in jail, mothers aren’t abusive and college isn’t something you only see on TV. VUELVE A LA VIDA - p. 65 Named after a ceviche that cures hangovers, “Vuelve a la Vida” is a fun romp that takes us back to the heyday of Acapulco in the 1970’s. The story centers around “Perro Largo,” a charming scuba diver who led a legendary shark hunt in 1975, and his wife Robyn, a glamorous model from NY who gave up her life to be with him.

PREMIO CORAZóN FRANK “CESCO” PAMIES Artist, Sculptor, Educator

Cesco grew up in the back of a ceramic studio located in Los Angeles, CA. Born into a family rich in artists and artisans Cesco was exposed to and fell in love with art at a young age. His artistic interests led him to study photography in high school and college. His talent in photography resulted in being recruited by Walt Disney Imagineering as a Production/Documentation Photographer. While working at Disney Cesco learned how to make various types of molds and cast items in materials such as plaster, fiberglass, metals and a variety of plastics. Cesco currently lives in Los Angeles and owns and operated Cesco’s Muertos. Cesco’s Muertos manufactures and distributes a line of Paint It Yourself Chicano Folk Art products. You can find these products along with Cesco’s original artwork in stores and galleries throughout California, Arizona, Nevada and online at www. cesco.etsy.com and www.cescosmuertos.com. Cesco participates in gallery shows and art festivals throughout Southern California and teaches folk art workshops in Los Angeles, San Bernardino, Orange and San Diego Counties on a bimonthly basis. Cesco’s workshops focus on traditional Mexican iconography and craft and are offered in both adult and children’s formats. Cesco’s goal is to spread the gift of creativity and art to everyone he meets and his current focus is on creating art from discarded and recycled materials (Trash to Treasures). Samples of his recycled artwork can be found in publications such as Day Of The Dead Crafts and locations like Olvera Street in downtown Los Angeles.

Matt Bonner is a graphic artist and designer from London whose work ranges from product packaging, branding and arts promotion to mixed media collage work and analog photography. He predominantly produces print work for arts and music events promotion in London and enjoys working with smaller businesses and charitable organizations. His company, English Breakfast is growing strong and also allows him to promote his other passion, DJ-ing vintage 50’s rhythm ‘n’ blues and soul 7 inch records. “The contest was a great opportunity to combine my love of graphic art with my interest in film. After discovering what the San Diego Latino Film Festival was about, I was also confident that I could relate my visual style with the event and come up with something relevant and strong for its identity. I knew I wanted to conjure up that fiery passionate Latin spirit (!) which is where the fire and love imagery and color scheme came from. I also wanted to give the poster a retro feel, almost homemade, in homage to the Tercer Cine Movement as well as modern independent cinema, which is where the idea for the vintage camera and film reel came from. Celebrating six years of showcasing LGBT programming San Diego Latino Film Festival continues its mission to help correct the often distorted images seen on television and in movies by presenting a landmark year of its Cine Gay Showcase. Challenging the historical exclusion of under-represented communities in the media, the festival takes advantage of the opportunity of this showcase to highlight experiences of gay life in different corners of the world, underlining the universal experience as well as the unique expressions of the Latin LGBT community.
