Captive Beauty

CAPTIVE BEAUTY is a feature-length documentary about four female inmates raised on the streets of Pablo Escobar's Medellin, Colombia. Jailed for murder, kidnapping, revolution, and con-artistry, these women are brought together by a surreal beauty pageant held inside the prison walls. The week-long pageant transforms the prison into colorful and controlled mayhem, and serves as a jumping off point to explore the contestants' lives. August 31, September 1, 3, 4

The Citizen

Yearning to leave behind his life in the Middle East, Ibrahim Jarrah wins the US Green Card Lottery for a chance to become an American citizen. Band of Sisters

BAND OF SISTERS is a fascinating look at the generation of nuns who were transformed in the 1960s by Vatican II and left convents, schools and hospitals where they had been traditionally assigned, to work in the outside community. They became activists in the Civil Rights movement, the anti-war movement, women's liberation, and many others social justice causes. Today they work on issues from immigrant rights to affordable housing and the environment. BAND OF SISTERS follows a number of these dedicated women from around the United States who suddenly find themselves under attack from the Church they have served for almost 50 years. Band of Sisters" is a charming, informative and thought-provoking film about the ministry of today's Catholic sisters" Pittsburgh Post Gazette

Sample This

A fascinating music doc narrated by Gene Simmons that chronicles the incredible true story of how one visionary music producer and some of the greatest studio musicians of the 1970s created one of the most influential albums in music history. On the streets of the Bronx in the summer of 1973, DJ Herc took the percussion breaks from an obscure album recorded in Vancouver of all places, and extended them by playing them back to back using two copies of the same record. And changed music forever. “a captivating story of a sound that has influenced artists for decades” - Indiewire

Los Amorosos

Sign Painters

There was a time, as recently as the 1980s, when storefronts, murals, banners, barn signs, billboards, and even street signs were all hand-lettered with brush and paint. But, like many skilled trades, the sign industry has been overrun by the techno-fueled promise of quicker and cheaper. The resulting proliferation of computer-designed, die-cut vinyl lettering and inkjet printers has ushered a creeping sameness into our landscape. Fortunately, there is a growing trend to seek out traditional sign painters and a renaissance in the trade. "A lovely paean to a vanishing art” - New York Times

Is the story of Divine, aka Harris Glenn Milstead, from his humble beginnings as an overweight, teased Baltimore youth to internationally recognized drag superstar through his collaboration with filmmaker John Waters. Spitting in the face of the status quos of body image, gender identity, sexuality, and preconceived notions of beauty, Divine was the ultimate outsider turned underground royalty. With a completely committed in-your-face style, he blurred the line between performer and personality, and revolutionized pop culture. “Just as garish, splashy, and loud as Divine himself.”— Drew Taylor, indieWire’s The Playlist
