We, at the Smart Media Group, have created a tribute to, and an intricately fashioned invitation for, a sojourn at our legendary luxury resorts, each a landmark of hospitality on or close to a beach as well as the City Centre, and an everlasting memory for guests spoilt for choice by this earthly utopia.

UR UNIQUE location on the global physical map is our most invaluable asset, backing our proud assertion that we have successfully maintained the legacy of our wonderful island nation and its heritage in total detail, as proved by the number of international tourists visiting our country. On a global scale, Cyprus ranks First in terms of tourism infrastructure in relation to the tourism industry, with the most popular and cleanest beaches in Europe and our «sea, sun and sand» attributes; Second in safety for tourists and Fifth in the ratio of tourists to population. The island is so beautifully laid out topographically that tourism has surpassed all expectations, none more so than in its second largest city of Limassol. The list of the rich and elite who can afford a lavish life keeps increasing, and it is this ever-growing global group that we are looking at, using this magazine as our medium. This glamorous, bi-lingual (English and Russian) publication will be distributed in select Luxury Hotels in Limassol, the two major Cyprus Airports and will be available Online on International and Russian Hotel booking websites as well as distributed to over 100 overseas Tour Operators from ten different countries presently working with Cyprus. 2017 will be a busy year for us. It marks the nomination of Paphos as the European Capital of Culture and the next edition of our Luxury magazine will be «Luxury Paphos Hotels» in March/April 2017. As Spring glides into Summer, our magazine will feature the extravaganza of «Luxury Ayia Napa and Protaras Hotels» in April/ May 2017, the harbinger

of the impatiently awaited season of midnight madness, fun and frolic in eastern Cyprus. Both publications will showcase the named cities amidst the trappings of localised majesty, best topped off with a stay at those Hotels. In July 2017, we also plan to release a new bi-annual magazine, «Cyprus Finest», in a July/February cycle, featuring only the top 15 Cyprus Hotels and the Best Businesses in our country. This magazine will be published in two versions: the first, Blue Edition, reserved for Cyprus, i. e., distribution in every room of the 15 Best Hotels in Cyprus; other well visited areas of our Island such as the Limassol Marina; sites that see affluent footfalls like Private clinics and Doctors’ offices; Lawyers, Architects and Developers’ and, of course, Banks and CYTA offices. The second, Red Edition, will be available in the VIP and Business Class lounges of the three major airports of Moscow, Sheremetyevo, Domodedovo and Vnukovo, which together see almost 70 million passengers per year, besides our usual overseas distributors, for unmatched global reach. We will, tentatively, add Pulkovo Airport in St. Petersburg at a later stage, before moving on to other past Soviet Union Airports, London, Dubai and Abu Dhabi as we expand. Transiting From Historic to Modern The skyline of Limassol (Lemesos), with the inviting Troodos Mountains in the northern distance, has left behind very little evidence of its historical past and given way instead to a modern, cosmopolitan appearance. The protected ancient monuments of the city showcase a rich trail of sanctified artefacts and religionbased tales of the miraculous.

IMASSOL (LEMESOS), the southernmost city of Europe lies on the southern coast of Cyprus. It is the second largest urban area in Cyprus, with an urban population of almost 180,000 (2011). Limassol Port, the largest port in Cyprus, is one of the most active in the Mediterranean. Famous for its unique cultural traditions over at least four millennia, the city has become one of the foremost tourism, trade, and service-providing centres in the area. Limassol was built between two ancient cities, Amathus and Kourion. Limassol Castle gained prominence when Richard the Lionhearted destroyed Amathus in 1191. It is a dominant landmark and tourist attraction. A wide spectrum of activities and a number of museums and archaeological sites are available to the interested visitor. Limassol attracts a large volume of tourists during summer and faces no problem re accommodation, with a vast array of hotels and apartments available. It is also a very popular medical resort, with highly specialised medical facilities and doctors readily available. Limassol is the base for many of the island’s wine companies, serving the wine-growing regions on the southern slopes of the Troodos Mountains, the most famous being Commandaria. The wines and brandies of this region are of international award-winning quality and exported to Europe in large volumes, besides active local and foreign visitor consumption. Limassol is the biggest industrial cen-

tre of the province, with about 350 industrial units concerned with apparel, furniture, shoes, drinks, food, prints, metal industry, electric devices and more. It is the largest ship management service centre in Europe with 60+ ship management companies making the most of its liberal shipping tax laws. Major landmarks are Limassol Castle, the Archaeological Museum, the Folk Art Museum and the Municipal Garden, which has a small zoo and an amphitheatre. Historical sites are Kolossi Medieval Castle, the ruins of Amathus and Kourion, Agios Nikolaos ton Gaton Convent, the churches of Agia Christina & Agios Mamas and the monasteries of Agioi Anargyri & Agiou Geogiou Alamanou. Other activities include sunbathing on miles of sun kissed coastline and Blue Flag beaches, all water sports as well as catamaran trips and yachting in the blue waters of the Mediterranean. Shoppers can hunt for traditional, handmade handicrafts, jewellery, leather goods, etc. Cruises are also popular; Limassol has now become a major stop for cruise ships heading towards any of its seven neighbouring countries and local tourists are following suit. Nightlife in Limassol reverberates until the early morning, with party goers and others who prefer chilling out with friends frequenting the Limassol tourist area, where there are a large number of pubs, bars and cafes playing various types of music. Tour Cyprus to Watch History Unfold Cyprus is situated in the north-eastern part of the Mediterranean Sea, 33° East by 35° North, 75 km south of Turkey, 105 km west of Syria and Lebanon, 380 km north of Egypt and 380 km east of Rhodes Island, Greece.

LL THESE COUNTRIES were militant in nature, and Cyprus lay within their reach. The Mycenaean-Achaean Greeks were the first settlers, between the 13th and 11th century B. C. Those were times of myths and folklore and the Greek goddess of love, beauty and sensuality, Aphrodite, cited as being a Cypriot at heart. Aphrodite is the patron of the island and has a prominent role in tourism in Cyprus. If you plan to tour Cyprus, it would be a good idea to start with her. Do opt for a reliable Tour Operator to take you around. Numerous legends correlate Petra tou Romiou (Rock of the Greek), an unusual geological formation of huge rocks along the main road from Paphos to Limassol, with Aphrodite. One says Aphrodite was born from the waves on the site off the coast of Cyprus and escorted ashore on a shell to the Petra tou Romiou. Another says that she emerged from the sea at this bay and chose the famous rock to begin her life as a human. The Greeks have their own tales to narrate. The ‘Baths of Aphrodite’ is an area on the way to Akamas National Park. As its name suggests, the grotto is said to be where the Goddess of Love used to bathe in a pond, where Adonis saw her and fell in love, little knowing that he would die for his indiscretion. Akamas National Park itself is a spot of immense natural beauty that includes rare and diverse flora and fauna, hills, beautiful coastline, amazing beaches including the Lara turtle nesting beach, gorges and baths. After a short Egyptian rule in the 6th century BCE, Cyprus fell under Persian rule until late 4th century BCE, when Alexander the Great took over. Alexander’s death marked the beginning of the Hellenistic period of Cypriot history. Cyprus passed on to Ptolemaic rule. Still under Greek influence, Cyprus gained full access to the Greek culture and thus became fully Hellenised. Cyprus became a Roman province in 58 BCE, lasting up to 330 AD, in which period Christianity came to Cyprus. Greek culture prevailed throughout the following centuries, even though Cyprus was ruled by successive foreign powers — the English, the Franks, Venetians, Ottomans and the British (1878–1960). Cyprus became an independent Republic on 16 August 1960. Limassol itself has a historic Castle, apart from the Kolossi Medieval Castle and the ruins of Amathus and Kourion. Kolossi Castle was originally a 13th century Frankish fortification, destroyed by the Mamalukes and rebuilt in 1454. Kourion (Curium) was founded by Achaean settlers from Argos. It hosts a stunning Greco-Roman theatre, a curved auditorium • 2016/2017 EDITION

that has been fully restored (with the Mediterranean as a backdrop) and is used today for open air musical and theatrical performances. Many important monuments may be seen at the site. Amathus is strongly connected with the cult of Aphrodite and its ruins include several ancient sites, including tombs, an acropolis with a first century A. D. Roman temple to Aphrodite, an agora with some public baths and the remains of the eighth century B.C. palace of Amathus. The Tombs of the Kings is a large necropolis that is located just outside the walls, to the north and east of Paphos town in Cyprus. It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It was built during the Hellenistic period (3rd century B.C.) and hosts the 2nd century A. D. Houses of Dionysos and Orpheus and the Villa of Theseus, as well as the 4th century House of Aion. The site houses the once magnificent Basilica of Chrysopolitissa, the largest basilica built on the island in the 4th century A. D. Also of interest is the Castle of Forty Columns, a Byzantine fortress known locally as ‘Saranda Kolones’. You can also take in a trip through the Troodos Mountains and numerous villages of historical interest, breathtaking views of the surroundings as well as cities of import like Nicosia, the capital of Cyprus; Larnaca, Ayia Napa, Protaras and the ghost town of Varosha in Famagusta. Visitors to Cyprus invariably undertake a religious tour. The number of religious sites on the island is amazing, each different from the preceding and the succeeding era. It is critical that you select an efficient Tour operator with an erudite guide, like 4VIPtour, as religious sites are particular about timing, dress codes and ethics. You can visit the Kykkos Monastery, dedicated to the Virgin of Kykkos, the most famous and rich active Cypriot monastery; the Timios Stavros Monastery or the Monastery of the Holy Cross at Omodos holds relics taken directly from the site of Jesus Christ’s crucifixion, the most important being the Great Cross with the Holy Rope given by St. Helena on her visit in 327–328 AD. Then there is Stavrovouni Monastery where one can see a piece of the Holy Cross, and numerous other sites. You could opt for fun days in Cyprus. Go on a wine-tasting trip, or on a Jeep Safari. Fun tours in Cyprus generally include an excursion to a Donkey Farm, which is something unique. Try traditional Cypriot food with section of local wine thereafter. If you would like a conservative yet fun-filled extravaganza, you could go to Fasouri Watermania Waterpark. Ancient Cyprus Revisited Cyprus is History personified and presents glimpses of a highly intriguing past, where fact can be stranger than fiction. The archeological vistas serve to reinforce this point. KOURION (CURIUM) Kourion or Curium (Latin) was an ancient city on the SW coast of Cyprus, the surrounding Kouris River Valley occupied from the Ceramic Neolithic period (4500-3800 BCE) to date. The acropolis of Kourion, some 18 km west of Limassol, is located atop a limestone promontory nearly one hundred metres in height along the coast of Episkopi Bay. Legend has it that Kourion was founded in the 12th century B.C. by Argives. Excavations over decades have unearthed several archeological masterpieces like the early 3rd century A.D. Roman Agora; the House of Achilles, a Roman villa, only part of which building is preserved today; the House of the Gladiators, also a Roman house, dated to late 3rd century A.D. and the Theatre−a 2nd century B.C. structure with follow up additions & restorations−a curved auditorium that seated around 3500 people. Today the theatre is used for cultural events.

KOLOSSI CASTLE Kolossi Castle is a former Crusader stronghold on the south-west edge of Kolossi village 14 km west of Limassol. It held great strategic importance in the Middle Ages, and contained large facilities for the production of sugar from local sugarcane, one of Cyprus’s main exports then. The original castle was possibly built in 1210 by the Frankish military. It served first as the Grand Commandery of the Knights Templar, and after the fall of Acre in 1291 for some years, the land of Kolossi was given by King Hugh I to the Knights of the Order of St John of Jerusalem (Hospitallers). The present castle was built in 1454 by the Hospitallers under the Commander of Kolossi, Louis de Magnac. The castle today looks in good condition. Considered to be impregnable, it proved so, surviving even earthquakes. The fertile land around it saw many vineyards come up and the area is known for its sweet wine, Commandaria, produced in the region for millennia.

THE CYPRUS WINE MUSEUM The Cyprus Wine Museum started operations in November 2004. It is situated at the edge of the wine-producing countryside, in the village of Erimi and adjacent to the famous Kolossi Castle, which is historically connected to the production of Commandaria. A special son et lumière describes the 5500-year wine culture of Cyprus from the birthplace of European Wine, Erimi. The Cyprus Wine Museum will take you on a journey through the history of the island’s long winemaking tradition. The various stages of wine production and consumption - along with the various uses of wine - are shown through different presentations. Ancient jars and canisters, medieval drinking vessels, old documents and instruments illustrate the social, economic and symbolic aspects of wine production, whilst wine tasting is also available.

Limassol’s Old Port Reborn The compact Old Port of Limassol, built in the 1950s, was more of a fisherman’s wharf and minor passenger gateway, second behind Famagusta till its demise and then Limassol Main Port. Laid over Molos or Custom’s Pier of 1881, it brought Cyprus onto the global nautical map. Today the waterfront pier is expanding into a multi-function commercial coastal park called ‘Epihosi’, an excellent site for hanging out at night and for dinner.

HE REJUVENATION of the Old Port has brought in some great new restaurants and gastronomical options to satisfy all tastes. Cafes and bistros of every kind and taste abound. Fast food eateries dot the scene, along with seafood bars with exotic seafood specialties and signature cocktails, coffee and snacks shops interspersed with vendors offering ice cream, fresh juices, smoothies and milk shakes. But it is the plush Cypriot-oriented restaurants that are the show-stoppers, with sublime island cuisine, even elixirs! We gorged on exceptional food from the luxurious fine-dining houses that caught our eye, starting with:

Enjoy a stunning, breath taking view together with a ‘Juicy Black Angus’ burger cooked on the grill and served in a soft brioche bun. It is topped with foie gras, ripe tomato, caramelised herbed mushrooms, onions and flavoured rosemary mayonnaise and served with homemade fresh French fries and crunchy side salad. The REMEZZO CAFERESTO is an all-day restaurant with a proper menu, where we enjoyed its hallmark Terkenlis confectioneries as well as its splendid servings of main dishes and cocktails. The FISH MARKET Restaurant at the Old Port has just gone beyond its excellent reputation as a top class restaurant, bagging the Readers' Choice Award at the Time Out Eating Awards 2016 on 29 November. No real surprise this; we had found the diverse seafood menu excellent, and simply loved the seafood dishes bearing the distinctive stamp of the celebrated Michelin Star Chef Lefteris Lazarou. Obviously, so did many other gourmets.

SOUPS Traditional Cyprus Trachanas Soup is a popular year-round soup. Trachanas are crumbly solid cakes prepared by processing soured goat’s milk boiled with crushed wheat and salt, added to appropriate stock and heated to get a creamy porridge-like consistency. A handful of small cubes of halloumi cheese are added in the final stages, along with seasoning. Poultry fans can ask for an Avgolemono Soup, a classic soup with tender chicken, orzo (rice) pasta and a delicious bright lemon flavour. Avgolemono means egg-lemon. The chicken version of Avgolemono soup is preferred over beef and fish-base versions. The traditional Easter soup is the Mayeritsa, made

The lemon juice, extra virgin olive oil, seasoning to taste, olives, capers, coriander leaves and finely sliced spring onions add pep to the meal. 6 The tomato salad uses sliced beefsteak tomatoes, local oregano, or rigani which has a musky Horiatiki essence, halloumi, olive oil and vinegar. salad MAIN COURSES 6 Souvla, large pieces of pork, lamb or chicken cooked on a long skewer over a charcoal barbecue, garnished with oregano, lemon and salt and typically stuffed into a pitta. 6 Souvlaki is Souvla with smaller pieces of meat, grilled bread as an option, more garnishes and sauces as well as fried potatoes. For tourists, souvlaki may be made with meat such as lamb, beef, chicken and sometimes fish (especially swordfish). 6 Gyros is grilled meat slices instead of chunks, using different salads or dressings. 6 Sheftalia is a traditional Cypriot crépinette, a sausage without skin, using caul fat, or omentum, the membrane that surrounds the stomach of pig or lamb, to wrap the ingredients rather than sausage casing and grilled like a kebab. SEAFOOD The most traditional fish is çipura, baked in outdoor beehive ovens with special lemon sauce. Popular seafood dishes include calamari, cuttlefish, red mullet (parpouni/barbun) and sea bass (lavraki/ levrek); Octopus is also favoured, but as а grill or stiffado (stew) with red wine, carrots, tomatoes, and onions. DESSERTS For dessert, the most popular are soutzouko, made from grape juice and nuts; Palouzes, a jelly made out of grape juice; Glyko, preserves of almond, date, apricot, cherry, quince or grapes; Finikia, walnut cakes; Kourabiedes, small almond cakes coated in icing sugar; Melomakarona, honey cakes; Loukoumades, very sweet, small, Cyprus style doughnuts with honey, Kadeifi, Baklava and Galatopureko, very rich, sweet cakes made with honey and a plate of mixed fresh fruit.

6 Kleftiko is a traditional lamb dish that’s baked in a kiln and cooked for a minimum of 24 hours in the clay oven while it marinates in a mixture of lemon juice, and cinnamon. 6 Stifado is a traditional and fragrant stew made with rabbit (and sometimes beef ) that’s simmered in wine, vinegar, onions, and popular Greek spices, like garlic and oregano. 6 Moussaka is a widely enjoyed casserole, baked in layers of eggplant and lamb, covered in béchamel sauce, a white sauce made with butter and flour cooked in milk. 6 Loukanika, a meal of pork sausages soaked in red wine, seasoned with coriander and pepper. 6 Yemista, a dish of stuffed vegetables such as peppers, tomatoes, onions, courgettes, aubergines or courgette petals.

COFFEE Cyprus coffee is a characteristic part of the island’s culture, unique and unlike coffee served in Europe. The traditional coffee of the island is strong, made from fresh, finely ground Brazilian coffee beans (in small, long handled copper pots called mbrikia) that are boiled to form a frothy cream known as “kaimaki” on the top. Most locals drink it in tiny demitasse cups with dissolved sugar (“glikis”) or medium sweet (“metrios”); a brave few drink it unsweetened (“sketos”). Cyprus coffee is served along with a glass of water.

ALCOHOL Traditional brandy and zivania are most popular on the island, followed by beer. Zivania is a pomace grape distillate and can be very strong. Commandaria, the oldest wine in continuous production in the world, is a popular dessert wine. Ouzo and raki are also imbibed frequently.

Her younger sister Georgina Leonidas plays Molly in the Basil Brush Show, and Katie Bell in Harry Potter and the HalfBlood Prince and Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 2.

Leonidas Q: Is part of the appeal of a project like this the fact that it’s so new and groundbreaking? SL: The more we’ve talked about it, and the closer it’s come to coming out, and the fact that the game is out now, it’s blown my mind even more. We’re all just so excited because it’s so new to us. Q: What was it about Irisa’s character that drew you to her? SL: Even though it was about aliens and a lot of shooting and fighting, there was a real human drama to it. With Irisa, I loved the fact that there was just so much going on inside of this girl that’s a feral animal-like creature. I think that’s what drew me to it. Q: Was it important to you that she keep that feral edge to her and not become too human?

SL: There were so many times that things didn’t make sense to her. I liked the fact that she went back to her roots and didn’t ever feel so comfortable, but didn’t really know why, and was constantly battling with herself. She’s just like any human girl, having to deal with all of that stuff. It was about what being an Irathient meant to her, and about discovering a lot about herself and her past. I think it’s something that I, as Irisa, would like to hang onto because I think it’s important. Q: What about research of your character? SL: Yeah, we did do a lot of rehearsal work and research, before we started filming. The male lead needs Irisa just as much as she needed him. He’s brought her up since she was 10 years old. He needed someone there, also, even though he may not always admit that. They both needed each other. As they grew and went on their journey together, they had a special bond that just can’t be broken. Q: What can you say about the journey that Irisa will take, this season? SL: With Irisa, especially, it’s about going back to some of her roots and discovering who she is. Something Irisa starts to learn herself is why he ever helped her and why she’s with him. She’s always questioned that, herself, and wondered what went on in her background. So, you start to learn a bit more about Irisa and where she’s from and her roots.

Q: When we finally discover aliens, do you think they will be good looking? SL: I like the way you say, “When we finally discover them”. I like your positivity. I think they’re going to be friendly. Sexy too. Q: What’s it like to be on these sets? Does it really feel like you’re transported to another world? SL: It really does, more than anything I’ve done. The sets on Defiance are incredible. I’ve never really seen a set like this, where the world is so built around us. There’s little left for us to have to imagine. Q: As you got more and more scripts, and you learned more about the journey that your character was on, did you get more excited about the possibility of continuing to explore this character in future seasons? SL: Definitely! There are so many places that Irisa could go. By the end of the season, so much has happened. Irisa could go anywhere. I love playing her! It’s been good fun. It really has. Q: After playing an alien, what’s next? SL: I’m about to start shooting a film called Tomorrow about a guy who comes back from Afghanistan and the trials and tribulations that he faces. Laze around at sunny Limassol’s Beaches lake, a stopping off point for migratory birds and a winter home for thousands of flamingos. The port end of the beach is mostly pebble, but the other end is fine sand with a shallow incline into the water, making it suitable for toddlers and weak swimmers. All tourist facilities are available. DASSOUDI BEACH Dassoudi, the Blue Flag main town beach of Limassol is a 3 km flat stretch of dark, coarse sand and pebbles where you can see fish swimming in the clear blue water. It has a lovely Eucalyptus forest as a backdrop, backed by small, well kept parks for tourists and picnickers.

BUTTON BEACH South of Lady’s Mile lies Button Beach, an unspoiled area more popular with Cypriots than tourists. The Holy Monastery of St Nicholas of the Cats, first built in 327AD, was so named after the many cats bred there to try and combat snakes. The snakes have gone but the cats remain−in plenty!

GOVERNOR’S BEACH Some 30km east of Limassol off the Nicosia/Limasol highway, Governor’s Beach has a daily bus service. The waters are shallow, so it’s fine for children and there is an area of spectacular white rocks for those who like snorkelling. Good walks on nature trails abound in the hills nearby.

AVDIMOU BEACH 16km west of Kourion is Avdimou beach. It is wide, sandy, more protected than Kourion and much safer for swimming, but with little by way of shade. The sea is shallow here and good for children. A beach taverna opens in the summer with the usual basic menu. There is no bus service though, so a car is needed for a visit.

MELANDA BEACH Near Avdimou and signposted from the main road is Melanda Beach, a small shelf of sand and

pebbles. This beach is used mostly by troops from the UK. Very few tourists are seen here. PISSOURI BEACH The most popular and pleasant beach along this stretch of coastline is Pissouri Bay, 10km west of Avdimou and midway between Limassol and Paphos. Several bars and tavernas hold popular Cyprus nights and the beach, with the usual water sports and tavernas, is very much a tourist resort, with numbers swelling to more than 1,000 each summer. The centre of the beach is the busiest as it sweeps around the bay for a kilometre in both directions. There are the usual water sports and tavernas. Pissouri is a popular winter holiday location too with tavernas open for the New Year. AYIOS ERMOGENIS BEACH The Blue Flag beach of Ayios Ermogenis, also known as the

Kourion beach, is located in the Erimi area of Limassol facing the 4th Century AD chapel of Ayios Ermogenis. Some 17km from Limassol, it is a very large organised beach but the southern end of Kourion beach is unsafe for all but the strongest swimmers. Prominent signs warn of the dangers. PARAMALI BEACH Paramali Beach is a two-km beach, the southern half of which falls in the British Overseas Territory of Akrotiri. LIMASSOL ZOO Limassol Zoo is located close to the city centre on the coastal road. The enclosures use only stone, glass, wood and rope. LIMASSOL MUNICIPAL MUSEUM OF FOLK ART The Municipal Museum of Folk Art includes one of the most important collections of Cypriot folk art and craft from the late 19th century until the beginning of the 20th century. The museum is housed in a listed building in central Limassol. The Museum hosts rich and remarkable collections of garments, embroidery, wood carved creations, agricultural and tools and utensils, jewellery, decoration artifacts and furniture mainly of the late 19th and early 20th century. Some of the artifacts you will see are woodcut chests, chests of drawers, pictures made with silk cocoons, traditional Cypriot costumes, lamps, baskets, swords, bronze pots, small stools, bronze plates, etc. A collection of donated porcelain is exhibited in one of the halls of the museum. The collection consists of thirty (30) dishes of varying styles, some of which date back to 1725.

The Grape Feast Although this feast starts in September, it extends into and culminates in October. The nominated Wine Villages organise events dedicated to wine and related products. Zivania Festival Zivania is a traditional alcoholic beverage produced for centuries in Cyprus which has played an important role in the everyday life of the locals. Traditionally, it is Ayios Vasilis (Saint Basil) and not Father Christmas who brings everyone’s gifts when he arrives on the night of New Year’s Eve - in time for his Name Day on 1 January! Soon after midnight, families share their Vasilopitta – ‘Basil’s Pie’ – a delicious sponge cake. The head of the family cuts the cake and puts the first two slices aside to be given to the church & Christ and the poor. He serves himself the third slice, his wife the next and finally the family in descending age order! A coin is hidden in the centre, and whoever finds it will have great luck for the coming year. Epiphany «Fota» The 12th day of Christmas…The festival of Epiphany (6 January) is known in Cyprus as ‘Ta Fota’ which means ‘the light’. The festival celebrates the baptism of Christ and religious festivities take place in all the harbours, led by the local Bishop. Everyone spends time in the harbour area and wanders around dressed in their best clothes and enjoying a tray of lokoumades (tiny honey-soaked doughnuts) bought from the roadside stalls. Older Cypriots quietly wash their fruit and vegetables in blessed seawater to ensure that they have a bountiful harvest in the autumn. Ski Season January usually means snow time in Cyprus although the snowfall is unpredictable. As soon as it snows on the mountains, families head up to the Troodos for a day in the snow. When there is enough snow, ski kits as well as snowboards and sledges can be hired at the ski stores. Skiing can be enjoyed on the slopes of Mount Olympus (1951 m amsl), usually from the beginning of January until the end of March. The Limassol Carnival While all of Cyprus celebrates Carnival with fancy dress and parties, there is no city which approaches the spectacle Limassol annually presents. The Apokreo festival begins two weeks before the 50-day Greek Orthodox Lenten period which occurs later than the Roman Catholic pre-Easter period. The festival lasts for ten (10) days, filled with festive, amusing masquerading, starting in the Meat Week (Kreatini), the last week for eating meat before Easter. The second week is known as the cheese week (Tyrini). The festival starts with the entrance parade of the King Carnival, entering the town which is decorated for the occasion on the Kreatini Thursday, named Tsiknopefti. The last Sunday of the Cheese Week is the highlight of the Carnival, as it leads to Green Monday, or ‘Kathara Deftera’, the first day of Lent, when everyone heads for the countryside with a huge vegetarian picnic and flies kites. Chrysorrogiatissa Monastery Fair Paphos This is an annual fair about the presentation of Jesus in the Temple. The monastery is set high above the sea and dedicated to Our Lady Of Golden Pomegranate. Koumantaria Festival The Koumantaria or Commandaria Festival is celebrated in Laneia village, one of the 14 villages in a small area in the Troodos Mountains producing the signature Cypriot Commandaria Wine. Commandaria is a sweet amber-coloured dessert wine made from sundried grapes using the Xynisteri and Mavro varieties. It is thought to be the world’s oldest named wine still in production. It represents an ancient wine style dating back to 800 BC in Cyprus. The annual week-long festival draws many crowds each year, both locals and tourists alike to Laneia Village. The Amathusia Festival This festival takes place among the ruins of the Agora, of the lower city kingdom of Amathus, ten km east of Limassol. RURAL LIFE AROUND LIMASSOL OMODOS A picturesque winemaking village, Omodos lies 42 km NW from Limassol. The large plaza in front of the Monastery of the Holy Cross (Timios Stavros Monastery), the medieval winepress, the narrow alleys and the stone-made houses lend a special aura to the village, at an altitude of 810 m. Omodos is renowned for its superb grapes, tasty wines, zivania and many Must-based delicacies like soutzoukos, palouze, etc. The Monastery houses a piece of the bloodstained Holy Rope, used to tie Jesus to the cross at Golgotha.

PELENDRI VILLAGE

LANEIA Laneia, at the foot of Mount Troodos about 26 km from Limassol, is one of the country’s main wine producing villages. Probably named after Lana, daughter of the Greek wine god, Dionysus, the village is well known for the high quality of its grapes and wines. Apart from wine, the locals also produce olive oil. Laneia has retained an ancient Linos circular stone olive press next to its church. This church, dedicated to St. Mary, hosts the Icon of Saint Mary of Valanas. AGIOS AMVROSIOS Situated 27 km north-west of Limassol, the village is known for its wine culture due to its ecological winery which produces high quality wines. Naturally beautiful, Agios Amvrosios is considered as one of “The Limassol Wine Villages,” and very restful. The river Kryos, a tributary of the Kouris river "captures" water from the Paramali river, one of the very few classic examples of a "river capture" in Cyprus. The village hosts the 11th century chapel of Saint George, the 14th century church of Saint Amvrosios and the chapel of Saint Elisabeth with the Byzantine frescos. AGROS This unique amphitheater-shaped village, 37 km from Limassol and at an altitude of 1100 metres was named after the Monastery of Great Agros, built where the Church of Panayia of Agros is found today. Apparently, 40 monks from Kizikos of Minor Asia (Modern-day Turkey) abandoned the Monastery of Megalos Agros and arrived at Agros Cyprus carrying the icon of the Holy Mother during the era of Byzantine Iconoclasm in the 8th and 9th centuries. The monks then built the new Monastery of “Great Agros.” It was eventually ruined by fire in 1894, and left the village with only remembrances of the great monastery.

OMODOS VILLAGE

ANOGYRA Anogyra, 38 km from Limassol is a must visit village. Its paved central plaza is surrounded by traditional stone houses; a stone spring with medieval sculpture as well as a working traditional 14th century well of limestone, with large faucets for water. The Pasteli Museum showcases the equipment used to make the very sweet "pasteli" from local carobs. The old church of Archangel Michael stands in the village centre, with a magnificent sundial over the south entrance, the other entrance being Gothic. The woodcut women's loft is unique in the Greek Orthodox Church, which houses valuable old icons like the "iconostasi" (icon screen) with its gold-filled carvings. Events organised by the Village Association, particularly the "Pasteli Festival", are held at the village boundary, gazing out over Episkopi Bay.

EPISKOPI In Greek, Episkopi means "home of the bishop", named after the 1192–1489 AD Frankish (Lusignan) period bishopric (Episkopi). It is only 12 km from Limassol. A few metres from the village entrance is the Frankish (Lusignan) period Ayios Ilarion church. The necropolis of Agios Ermogenis, to the south-west, hosts a great number of tombs. There are a number of historical and archaeological sites like the settlement of Faneromeni from the Middle Bronze Age, with its necropolis dating back to end Early Bronze Age. A few findings are exhibited in the local Archaeological Museum. The well-known Mycenean golden sceptre of Kourio was found in a tomb dating back to the 12th century B. C. For pleasure, the Ayios Ermogenis beach is worth a visit.

PELENDRI Pelendri village, 40 km north of Limassol & a settlement since medieval times, is a charming village in Cyprus that protects its architectural folkloric style. Modern buildings have come up; however, in the village centre, many traditional houses are seen, built with local stone “gabbrou”. Pelendri, is the largest district of Limassol in terms of population, volume of Byzantine heritage and the number of icons. Pelendri is also known for its unique churches and chapels. PISSOURI The picturesque village of Pissouri is about 30 km to the west of Limassol and halfway to Paphos. It is the 3rd largest community in the administrative area of Limassol. Its southern part extends to the sea. There are many tales about its origin, but the simplest version is that resin was grown in the region giving the village its name. The last few years have been devoted to touristic development in the area, especially the Blue Flag beach. Pissouri is a remarkable tourist area because it combines mountain and sea. The archaeological sites of Kourion and Palaipaphos close by are worth a visit. The main churches of the village are those of Ayios Mayrikios, Ayios Spyridonas and Apostle Andreas. VOUNI Vouni, a picturesque village with cobbled alleys, traditional houses with wooden doors, large windows, narrow balconies and inside yards, attracts both locals and foreigners with its rich architectural heritage. 35 km NW of Limassol, in the Krasochoria region, the village’s landscape is impressive with its tall peaks reaching a height of 1153 metres. Vouni was protected by Agios Ioannis Prodromos from the plague which struck Cyprus in 1692 and the main church of the village is dedicated to him. Vouni has been a wine village since the ancient years and up to the 90s, it was third after Pachna and Omodos re the extent of cultivated vineyards. Nowadays, viticulture has been significantly reduced due to rural depopulation. APESIA The history of Apesia begins thousands of years back, when the first residents settled here from Apesos of Asia Minor. This history is confirmed by the gravestone columns with Greek inscriptions in the yard of the school and church, as well as ancient Roman tombs. Findings as well as cultural remains reveal that the area had residents during the Neolithic, Hellenistic, Roman and Byzantine period, as well as during the Frankish and Venetian occupation. The village name seems to be related to Apesos of Asia Minor. Apesia shows how traditional elements coexist with modern ones. On the one side there is traditional housing with small stone built residences and on the other, there are new bigger residences spread west and southwest of the old housing.

Tavli is a Cyprus table top board game. Tavli used to be the preserve of only men, but times have changed and many women now enjoy playing tavli with friends especially in the cities and towns. However, in villages, a kafenion — the local village gathering place and a traditional refuge of the Cypriot male and the nearest thing to a UK pub — is still looked upon as the gathering place for men where they can play card games.

After many mishaps and injuries, plates replaced knives and were thrown to the floor and smashed whilst singing and dancing. Plate smashing may still be found in some parts of Cyprus; this tradition has now been replaced by the throwing of flowers, given the obvious ‘safety’ factor. In many bouzoukia or other modern establishments, girls with baskets or plates with flowers will go around the tables and sell them to the customers, who then throw them to the performers on stage. The komboloi, or string of beads, is a familiar sight in the hands of many Cypriot men. The word komboloi incorporates the word kombos, meaning the knot. The string of beads is always made with an uneven number of beads. The komboloi is said to reflect a way of life; they are certainly relaxing. The beads can be bought in many weights, sizes, colours, and materials and can make a nice gift. • 2016/2017 EDITION

BELIEFS Tuesday 13th: Unlike western belief, in Cyprus the unlucky day is Tuesday the 13th, not Friday the 13th. Matiasma: Some Cypriots believe that someone can catch the Evil Eye, or ‘matiasma’, from someone else’s jealous compliment or envy. To avoid the matiasma, believers often wear a charm; a little blue marble glass with an eye painted on it or a blue bracelet. Blue is believed to be the colour that wards off the Evil Eye. It is, however, also believed that people with blue eyes are the givers of the matiasma. Kallikantzaroi are supposedly goblin-like creatures that live in the centre of the earth and find their way into people’s homes via the chimney. Cypriots believe that they make all kinds of mischief such as dousing the fire, riding on people’s backs, braiding the tails of horses and souring milk. It is also believed that they visit only at Christmas. In order to keep the Kallikantzaroi away, the hearth is kept burning day and night throughout the 12 days of Christmas. Additionally, a family member will go around the house every day during these 12 days and bless the house, whilst sprinkling holy water around for protection. CEREMONIES Birthdays are not such a celebrated event in Cyprus as elsewhere; however, Name Days are. Children are typically named after the Patron Saint of their region. The Name Day is the feast day of the saint after which a child was named. A party is thrown on a person’s Name Day. Invites are not usually given — friends, family and neighbors are just expected to visit. A small gift is customary. As each Orthodox Church is named after a saint there will be celebrations on its Name Day, known as ‘Panigiria’. The celebrations will include food, fireworks and stall-holders may gather in the grounds of the patron saint’s church to sell local delicacies. Weddings in Cyprus are huge with over 1000 guests. The marriage takes place at 4pm or later, mainly due to summer heat. The bride and groom get ready separately; the maid of honour (Koumbara) and best man (Koumbaros) help the bride and groom to get ready. A red piece of cloth is tied and untied around the waist of the bride and groom several times as a sign of fertility. During the church ceremony, the bride and the groom wear headbands called Stefana. The priest leads the couple round the table, on which the Gospel and the Cross are placed, three times. The Koumbaros and Koumbara walk behind the married couple holding the Stefanas in place in the dance of Isaiah. The wedding rings, which are worn on the fourth finger of the right hand are exchanged three times. Confetti or rice is thrown over the couple as they leave the church.

HOLY CROSS MONASTERY St. Helena, who had discovered the Three Crosses of that fateful Friday came to Cyprus and donated pieces of the Crosses. She also left behind a part of the blood-stained rope with which Jesus had been tied to the cross, the remains of which can be seen in Timios Stavros Church in Omodos. This Church is visited by devotees who pray for help in family issues, health and happiness.

KYKKOS MONASTERY Kykkos Monastery, dedicated to the Virgin of Kykkos, is the most famous, rich and active Cypriot monastery. It holds a veiled icon of the Virgin Mary, reputedly painted by Luke the Evangelist. People from all over the world come to the Monastery to the miracle-working Mother of God, asking Her to cure them of some illness or grant them the strength to cope with personal and family problems.

AYIA NAPA MONASTERY A hunter discovered a glowing icon in a cave in a forest in East Cyprus in early 14th century. The cave was built into a temple for people to visit and pray. The woods were named Ayia Napa, or Holy Forest. A monastery was built there in the 15th century and a woman’s belt miraculously appeared out of nowhere. Couples who are infertile and women experiencing a difficult pregnancy come here to pray for help and request to gird the miraculous belt of the Saint of Ayia Napa.

TROODITISSA MONASTERY The Monastery of the Panagia of Trooditissa near Plátres village is dedicated to the Virgin Mary. In 990 AD, a cave with an icon of the Virgin was discovered and workers were led by divine power to a spring close by to build the monastery. Obraz Umilenie, an overage, sterile and childless lady, conceived a child in 1864 with the blessings of Virgin Mary and left behind her belt touched by divinity. The silver belt adorns the icon of the Panagia. Today, only prospective mothers and childless wives may visit this icon, pray, put on that belt and take away expectations to conceive a child. Other well known and visited places of worship are the monasteries of Ayia Thekla, Makheras and Stavrovouni and the churches of Sts. Cyprian and Justina, Panagia Chrysospiliotissa and Chrysoroyiatissa, among others. От античности до современности Курион — это древний город на юго-западном побережье Кипра, который был основан в 13 веке до нашей эры. В период между 500 годом до нашей эры и шестидесятыми годами ХХ века, город, чье название на латыни звучит как Куриум, пережил множество военных конфликтов и часто меняющихся правителей. Во времена римского владычества город посетили святые Павел и Варнава, которые подарили Куриону христианство. Это произошло в 45 году нашей эры.

Сооружение датируется второй половиной 3 века нашей эры. БАНИ ЭВСТОЛИЯ Банный комплекс Эвстолия, расположенный на юго-восточной части Куриона, когда-то был резиденцией городского богача. В здании, которое по оценкам археологов, построено между 4 и 5 веком нашей эры, кроме тридцати комнат и двух дворов, размещался внушительный банный комплекс с мозаичными полами.

В начале 5 века нашей эры здание утратило статус элитной частной резиденции и превратилось в общественную баню. РАННЕХРИСТИАНСКАЯ БАЗИЛИКА Расположенная в северо-западной части города трехапсидная базилика была построена в конце 5 века нашей эры и была разрушена арабами в середине 7 века нашей эры. Позже остатки базилики переместили к вновь возведенной церкви местного Епископа. СВЯТИЛИЩЕ АПОЛЛОНА ГИЛАТА Расположенное в двух километрах к западу от Куриона святилище было одним из важнейших храмов Древнего Кипра, в котором поклонялись Аполлону. Этот храм был заброшен в 4 веке нашей эры. СТАДИОН Руины древнего стадиона воздвигнутого во 2 веке нашей эры раскинулись к востоку от святилища Аполлона. Когда-то стадион, построенный в форме буквы U с легкостью вмещал 6000 зрителей. Сооружение функционировало до конца 5 века нашей эры.

ПАЛЕХОРИ — история с VI века!

На юго-западе Кипра находится горный массив Троодос — одно из самых красивых мест острова. Нигде на Кипре больше нет такого множества живописных долин и быстрых горных речушек, по берегам которых раскинулись небольшие селения. В средние века горы Троодоса служили убежищем от частых набегов арабов, и постепенно здесь начали появляться возделанные земли и поселения, византийские церкви и монастыри. 6 Сейчас точно установленно, что Палехори значительно старше окрестных деревень. Были найдены древние сосуды и монета, отчеканенная при византийском императоре Юстиниане в 563/64 годах, которые свидетельствуют о существовании на этом месте древнего поселения. 6 Исторические источники, имеющиеся в распоряжении исследователей, редко упоминают о деревне, но когда это происходит, то в основном относится к Палехори Оринис. От византийского периода, который закончился в 1191 году высадкой на остров крестоносцев, не сохранилось ни одного документа. Очень мало источников осталось и от правления франкских королей династии Лузиньянов (1192–1489 гг.). При венецианцах (1489–1570 гг.), количество документов несколько увеличилось. Они в основном касаются наследственной передачи феодов (земельных владений) семьям аристократов, но иногда содержат и некоторые данные относительно экономики и населения. 6 Начиная с конца XV века увеличивается число исторических источников, относящихся к церковному наследию, благодаря чему знания об этом периоде значительно обогатились. Так во время описи были обнаружены листы средневековых манускриптов с рукописными пометками. ство четырeх церквей с богатой росписью, прекрасными иконостасами и переносными иконами. 6 Подробное знакомство со старинными документами, относящимися к истории деревни, даeт представление и об истории Кипра времeн правления Лузиньянов. 6 Между 1600 и 1800 годами в силу разных причин происходит слияние деревень Палехори Морфу и Палехори Оринис. Этот процесс завершился после эпидемии чумы, постигшей остров в 1759–60 годах. Оставшиеся в живых жители обеих деревень, а также соседних с ними поселений: Маруллена, Агия Корони, Агиос Николаос, Агиос Мамас и других, переселились в одно место, положив начало той Палехори, которую все сейчас хорошо знают. Большое значение для исследователей имеют старинные рукописи, книги и надписи с именами мастеров, трудившихся над оформлением храмов. 6 В последние годы туркократии, но в основном уже при английском правлении, в Палехори, так же как и по всему острову, наблюдается экономический подъeм, прирост населения, повышение уровня образования. В деревне был открыт полицейский участок, суд, врачебный кабинет. Палехори всегда шла в ногу со временем. Некоторые из еe жителей участвовали в двух мировых войнах, в освободительной борьбе против английских колонизаторов, отражали турецкую агрессию. В наши дни, как и во многих сельскохозяйственных районах Кипра, большая часть населения деревни перебралась в город. Местные власти стараются сохранить богатое наследие прошлого, познакомить с ним всех, кто интересуется агротуризмом. Палехори включена в список Кипрской Организации Туризма (КОТ).

А ВОСТОЧНОМ склоне гор, по обеим сторонам речки Серрахис, приютились две симпатичные деревушки с общим названием — Палехори. Построенный через реку мост, представляет собой современную дорогу, соединяющую две деревни. История их возникновения переносит нас во времена Византийской империи, когда эти деревни входили в разные административные районы. Кипрский историк XVIII века архимандрит Киприанос называет их «палеа хорья» — старые деревни. В наши дни, когда хотят пояснить о какой из двух деревень идeт речь, обязательно добавляют, что это Палехори Морфу или Палехори Оринис. Сегодня это одна из немногих деревень Кипра, где во всех церквях сохранились прекрасные росписи. В трeх из них — старинные, в четвeртой — более новые. Кроме того, там находится большое количество икон и других произведений искусства. В заброшенных поселениях можно увидеть руины и других старинных храмов. Церковь Хрисопантанасса представляет собой трeхнефную базилику, построенную в палеологовском стиле, в котором прослеживается влияние итальянского Возрождения. Она была построена в начале XVI века. Иконостас выполнен в XIX веке, но на нeм размещены более старые иконы. Церковь Святых Бессребренников находится в местности, называемой Маруллена, северо-восточнее Палехори, на месте старого одноименного поселения. Церковь Святых Бессребренников — это двухнефная базилика с позднейшими пристройками. Росписи сохранились лишь на северной стене. Они датируются первой четвертью XVI века. От иконостаса, выполненного около 1600 года, до наших дней дошли лишь отдельные фрагменты. Церковь Апостола Луки представляет собой трeхнефную базилику с куполом в центральном нефе и с эксонартексом на западе. Храм был возведeн на месте более старого с итало-византийскими росписями, который снесли в 1924 году. Старинный иконостас, выполненный в 1893– 1894 гг., перенесли в новую церковь с некоторыми добавлениями и с подписью мастера резьбы по дереву — С. Талиадору. Церковь Святого Георгия — трeхнефная базилика. В еe нефе под потолком есть доска, на которой с трудом можно разобрать дату: 1864– 1865 годы. Скорее всего она относится ко времени обновления крыши, так как сам храм более ранней постройки. Большая часть его иконостаса была выполнена в 1729 году. Две более новые росписи сделаны иконописцем Н. Николаидисом. Роспись на северной стене, изображающая Святого Георгия, относится к 1869 году. Другая выполнена в 1905 году и изображает Святую Марину. В Палехори существует Музей византийского наследия. В нeм находятся самые ценные образцы церковной утвари и произведений искусств на протяжении нескольких веков хранившиеся в храмах двух деревень. Эта коллекция не только знакомит посетителей с произведениями религиозного творчества, но и отражает эволюцию церковного жития и искусства в сельских районах Кипра. Музей располагает большим количеством информации об эволюции в религиозной, социальной и материальной сферах жизни Палехори, начиная со средних веков и до наших дней. Представленные здесь дары верующих, говорят об основных нуждах повседневной жизни маленькой сельской общины одного из труднодоступных районов Кипра. В музее широко представлены произведения искусства поствизантийского периода: живопись, резьба по дереву и металлу, гравюра, образцы ткацкого ремесла и типографское искусство. Особенность красоты Палехори состоит в гармоничном сочетании архитектуры и окружающей природы. Это типично горная архитектура: очень просто выстроенные дома, при возведении которых использовали минимальное количество строительного материала. Дома строили из вулканического камня, который чередовали с сырой глиной и разбитой на куски обожжeнной глиной. При строительстве использовалось дерево, черепица и глинянные плиты для покрытия полов.

Очень красиво смотрятся узкие, выложенные камнем дорожки, как бы обрисовывающие контуры горы. Они остались в наследство от тех времeн, когда люди с уважением относились к окружающей их природе и не пытались еe переделывать. В Палехори есть много зданий, сохранивших самобытную архитектуру, но всe же, за последние десятилетия многое было утрачено. Власти прилагают усилия, чтобы сохранить элементы старого стиля. В деревне есть места, где любители старины могут увидеть как трудились в прежние времена. Это старая кузница, где хранятся инструменты местного кузнеца, которым пользовались вплоть до 1997 года. Есть и маслобойня (элeмилос), где из маслин получали масло. Жители Палехори свято чтут память героев, погибших во время освободительной борьбы 1955–1959 годов за свободу и независимость Кипра. В 1961 году неподалeку от деревни был установлен памятник, работы греческого скульптора Феодора Василиу, в честь матери-киприотки, потерявшей детей в борьбе за свободу Родины. Палехори — к рупнейшая из деревень, расположенных в районе Пицилия. Она играет большую роль в сохранении культурного наследия Кипра. ЦЕРКОВЬ ПРЕОБРАЖЕНИЯ ГОСПОДНЯ — это однонефная базилика с галереями, расположенными на западной и южной сторонах. Хорошо сохранившиеся росписи относятся к двум разным периодам: первый — датируется вторым десятилетием XVI века (эти росписи заполняют весь интерьер), второй — 1612 годом, росписи этого времени находятся на западной стене галереи. Иконостас выполнен в 1704 году, а в 1714 году туда поместили икону Преображения, подписанную афонским иконописцем — м онахом М. Кутулумусиосом. Возможно, что его кисти принадлежат и другие иконы этого иконостаса. В декабре 2001 года на заседании ЮНЕСКО в Хельсинки было принято решение о включении этой церкви в список Памятников Всемирного Наследия ЮНЕСКО. Все церкви Палехори имеют двухскатную крышу с плоской глинянной черепицей. Этот тип церквей встречается по всему Троодосу.

МОНАСТЫРЬ СВЯТОГО КРЕСТА Легенда гласит, что однажды жители близлежащих деревень увидели в горах горящий куст. Любопытные сразу отправились посмотреть на чудо поближе, но, приблизившись к месту, никто не нашел пожара. Источник пламени искали несколько ночей, пока кто-то не догадался вырыть пещеру, в которой был найден крест, способный исцелять людей. В 210 году над пещерой отстроили небольшую часовню, а через сто с небольшим лет она превратилась в монастырь, который назвали Timios Stavros или монастырь Святого Креста. За долгую историю своего существования монастырь пережил несколько реконструкций и перестроек, был разорен во время Египетского нашествия и вновь возрожден в 1850 году. Активное участие в этом ремонте принимали художники из Российской империи. К нашему времени монастырь перестал функционировать. МОНАСТЫРЬ СВЯТОГО НИКОЛАЯ Начнем, разумеется, с легенды. Говорят, что святая Елена попала в эти места в самый разгар 17-летней засухи, когда все окрестности Лимассола буквально кишели ядовитыми змеями. Чтобы решить проблему, царица велела доставить тысячу кошек из Египта, которые должны были истребить ползучих гадов. Присматривать за мурлыкающими спасителями назначили монахов, которые построили небольшой храм и освятили его в честь святого Николая, покровителя моряков и рыболовов. Кошки блестяще справились со своей задачей, а на месте храма постепенно вырос монастырь, получивший прозвище «Кошачий», который считается одним из самых древних монастырей на острове. «Кошачьему» монастырю пришлось многое пережить: череду землетрясений и турецкое нашествие, правление англичан и полное забвение. Отсчет современной истории святыни ведут с 1983 года, когда сюда приехали две монахини. Говорят, что они не нашли ни одной кошки, а ведь были времена, когда в храме собирались толпы паломников, чтобы посмотреть как сотни монастырских кошек собираются на завтрак по сигналу колокола. Пришлось все начинать сначала.

Иконостас монастыря Святой Феклы

ИНТЕРЕСНЫЙ ФАКТ: Иконостас монастыря появился в середине XVIII века, когда монастырь еще был мужским. В женскую обитель монастырь Святой Феклы превратился в 1991 году, после того его возродили несколько монахинь.

Сегодня монастырь Святого Николая — это женская обитель, в которой проживает десяток монахинь. Поголовье кошек исчислению не поддается. Паломники приезжают сюда, чтобы воздать молитвы Святому Николаю, а местные рыбаки в день праздника покровителя храма жертвуют свой улов местным кошкам, чтобы весь год дружить с удачей.

МОНАСТЫРЬ СВЯТОЙ ФЕКЛЫ Если верить легендам, этот монастырь основала Святая Елена в 4 веке нашей эры. Дело было так: 90-летняя царица проезжала по здешним местам по дороге из Иерусалима в Константинополь. Времена выдались засушливыми, поэтому люди страдали без воды. Чтобы помочь несчастным, Елена сделала остановку, чтобы помолиться, и прямо у ее ног неожиданно пробился целебный источник, который напоил Святой водой и Елену, и ее сопровождающих, и всех жаждущих. АЧАТЬ свой рассказ мы решили с преданий, которые рассказывают историю происхождения монастыря Махерас — одной из трех старейших и крупнейших обителей православия на Кипре, которая находится в самом центре Троодоса, недалеко от деревни Капедас. Первая легенда настаивает на том, что своим названием монастырь обязан греческому слову «махера», которое переводится как «нож». Дело в том, что когда-то очень давно на месте монастыря не было ничего — т олько густая лесная чаща, сквозь которую пришлось буквально прорубаться двум отшельникам, которые услышали зов иконы Святой Божией Матери — о дной из семидесяти икон, нарисованных рукой апостола Луки. Отшельников звали Неофитос и Игнатиос, а дорогу к священной иконе они прокладывали с помощью ножа. Вторая версия легенды звучит так: место будущего монастыря было указано монаху-отшельнику Неофиту явившейся к нему во сне Богородицей. Следуя ее указаниям, он отправился в чащу со своим учеником и заметили свет, исходящий от пещеры в зарослях. Продравшись в пещеру, они увидели, что это светится икона Божьей Матери, рядом с которой лежал нож. Как бы ни обстояли дела на самом деле, найденную икону назвали иконой Святой Божией Матери Махериотиссы, а на месте находки построили монастырь, которому византийский император подарил особый статус и независимость от власти местного епископа. После смерти отшельника на месте его кельи построили небольшую часовню Святого Георгия. Но почему Аламану? Народная молва утверждает, что «Аламану» — это искаженное временем имя турецкого охотника Сулимана, на которого как-то напала ядовитая змея. Спасти несчастного могло только чудо, о котором он попросил у Георгия Победоносца. Чудотворец не подвел, а спасенный построил на месте часовни Святого Георгия новую церковь, который назвал именем Святого Георгия Сулимана. Сила любви Даже древние греки считали, что эта прекрасная история могла произойти только на Кипре, где воздух буквально пропитан романтикой и страстью.

ОТ ЕЩЕ ОДНА ЛЕГЕНДА, которая связывает Кипр, Афродиту и любовь. Когда-то, давнымдавно, царю Кипра, одаренному скульптору Пигмалиону, удалось высечь из белоснежной слоновой кости прекрасную статую. Она была так красива и совершенна, что молодой царь даже и думать забыл о живых девушках, которые пытались привлечь королевское внимание. Все свое время он проводил со своей скульптурой, влюбившись в нее до беспамятства. Скоро ему стало мало просто любоваться своим творением: воспылав безумной ревностью к любому, кто мог увидеть его безмолвную возлюбленную, Пигмалион запер ее в своей мастерской и запретил всем открывать дверь. Все свое время он стал проводить в мастерской, забыв о еде и троне: днем в солнечных лучах, а ночью при свете лампад молодой царь нашептывал своей статуе нежные комплименты, осыпал дарами и драгоценностями. «Моя Галатея!» — называл он девушку из слоновой кости, которую одел в пурпурные одежды, моля богов, чтобы они дали ей возможность ответить на его слова и любовь. ДЕРЕВНЯ ЛЕФКАРА Одна из самых известных и живописных деревень на Кипре расположена в 30 километрах от Лимассола. Свое название Лефкара получила от древнегреческого «Белые холмы»: в горных породах района огромное содержание известняка, что придает незабываемый белый цвет местным склонам. Этот известняк — основной строительный материал в регионе: из него построено большинство домов и вымощены улочки деревни. Интересный факт: очень часто название Каледонии связывают с Шотландией и легендой о неизвестном шотландце, которого при взгляде на водопод, накрыла ностальгия по родине. На самом деле своим названием водопад обязан ласточкам, которые селятся на деревьяx в районе водопада: латинское имя этих птичек — Каледон урбица.

Отель хотели реcтаврировать, но все работы по реставрации были неожиданно и срочно окончены, что только добавило красок в легенде о местных привидениях. «Я люблю Кипр!» с Артемом Клименко Лидер молодой и дерзкой команды «АлоэВера», одного из самых ярких представителей ебург-стайла, признался в своей любви к Кипру и рассказал о своих любимых достопримечательностях.

АК БЫ ЧАСТО ты ни приезжал на Кипр, этого всегда мало. Последний раз я был здесь два с половиной года назад и первый раз в жизни потерял память. Просто мне показалось, что привязать наши самокаты к мотоциклу и отправиться кататься по деревне — это хорошая идея. Уехали мы, конечно же, совсем недалеко, но все обошлось и я сохранил только прекрасные воспоминания о беспечности того лета. За что мне нравится Кипр? За то, что местные жители исключительно приветливы, за то, что здесь светит самое белое солнце, за то, что можно плавать в самом приятном море, что я видел в своей жизни. Только на Кипре можно найти спокойствие и тишину, которой сильно не хватает в повседневности. При этом на острове есть абсолютно все развлечения, о которых может мечтать отдыхающий: от дрифт фестивалей и кайтсерфинга до дискотек и горных прогулок. Первое место, которое я настоятельно рекомендую посетить — это заповедник Каво Греко. Понятно, что все едут на Кипр за морем, но если кому-то хочется испытать незабываемые ощущение, когда лодка словно парит в воздухе, нужно отправляться в Каво Греко! Любителям истории советую изучить развалины древнего города Саламис на северной стороне острова — уверен, вам здесь понравится. Если вам нравятся горные прогулки и вы достаточно подготовленный «горец», отравляйтесь на хребет Тродос и покорите гору Олимп: вас ждут длинные трассы, оборудованные местами отдыха. Их было столько много, что обитатели острова поняли — им столько не съесть. Тогда они загрузили огромную лодку арбузами и увезли продавать в сторону нынешнего Египта. Когда они доплыли до места назначения, вкус арбузов так понравился покупателям, что они перебили всех киприотов, приплывших к ним, добрались до острова на их лодке и захватили его. По преданию, с этого и началась череда завоеваний Кипра разными государствами. Со временем от ножей стали отказываться: слишком часто вино и горячий темперамент становились причиной досадных промахов и нелепых несчастных случаев. ММИГРАЦИОННАЯ политика Кипра и условия инвестиционной программы получения гражданства меняется довольно часто. Последние изменения датируются ноябрем 2016 года: теперь, чтобы стать счастливым обладателем кипрского паспорта достаточно инвестировать в экономику острова два миллиона Евро. ПРИВИЛЕГИИ ГРАЖДАНИНА Перед рассказом о том, как получить паспорт, мы хотим напомнить о преимуществах, которые он дает. Самый большой плюс заключается в том, что наличие этого документа дает право на посещение 159 стран мира без всяких виз и разрешений. Но это не все! Получив паспорт гражданина Кипра, вы получаете право на проживание, работу и получение образования во всех странах Евросоюза. Налоговые и социальные льготы ЕС — это еще один приятный бонус. Процедура получения гражданства для членов семьи гражданина Кипра превращается по сути в формальную процедуру. И еще одна хорошая новость: больше нет необходимости в постоянном проживании на территории Кипра. Разве что вы сами не захотите покидать остров.

ГРАЖДАНСТВО ПО ПУНКТАМ Новые правила инвестиционной программы гарантируют короткие сроки получения паспорта — от трех до шести месяцев — и дают кандидату на получение гражданства несколько вариантов получения заветного документа. Первый вариант предполагает инвестиции в недвижимость на сумму не менее 2 000 000 Евро. Объектом покупки может быть как готовое здание, так и строящееся. Второй вариант — вложение средств в компанию, занимающейся бизнесом не территории Кипра, в которой трудоустроены миниму 5 граждан острова. Минимальная сумма инвестиций не меняется — это 2 000 000 Евро. Для получения гражданства можно инвестировать — сумма не меняется — в инвестиционные фонды или финансовые активы кипрских предприятий или организаций, у которых есть лицензия Комиссии по ценным бумагам и биржам. Или купить облигации, акции или ценные бумаги кипрских компаний. Сумма вложений? Не меньше двух миллионов Евро. Можно комбинировать предложенные выше варианты, чтобы общая сумма

Теперь, чтобы стать счастливым обладателем кипрского паспорта достаточно инвестировать в экономику острова два миллиона Евро. вложений в экономику превысила два миллиона Евро. Например, купить на 1,5 миллиона Евро недвижимости и добавить к этому покупку государственных облигаций Кипра на полмиллиона Евро.
