Arabian Travel Market arouses great interest from the globe

A bright future lies ahead for “Bursa-The Great City” Bursa, being renowned for its unique geographical position, natural beauties and climate, including its proximity to sea and Uludag, has turned out to be an ideal place for tourism and quality health services.

M

etropolitan areas of Turkey with more than two million inhabitants, became a city which is aimed to be transformed into a “Brand City.” We have recently interviewed, Governor of Bursa. The interview follows:

Could you brief us on your vision and the activities related to a brand new Bursa? As a matter of fact, we are living in a century of brands. The cities are more marked than the countries to which they belong. As known, we have recently launched our motto under the name of “BursaThe Great City” coupled with our new logo. We believe that this logo, inspired by the riches of the city would pave the way for contributing to the branding process of Bursa. We know that being quality conscious is a prerequisite for a brand for-

mation. So, we put emphasis on upgrading Bursa in terms of major quality standards. Bursa is a fruitful city giving birth to worldwide brands such as its historic monuments, textiles, towels, chestnut, peach, fig and some other products. Bursa has Geographical Indication (GI), a sign used on certain products which corresponds to a specific geographical location or origin .The use of a GI act as a certification that the product possesses certain qualities or enjoys a certain reputation, due to its geographical origin. Whenever brand cities of the world are mentioned, New York, Paris and Dubai come to mind. However, Bursa, being able to give a peace of mind to its visitors, differs itself from them considerably. Every brand, product, and value has an essence, an ore. The essence of tourism must be the natural, historical, and humane richness and diversity. In this respect, both Turkey and Bursa is very lucky. For the thousands of years, Turkey is the flow point where East and West connect and the center of the greatest empires where the sun has risen. Bursa is the founding city of Ottoman Empire that is the grand representative of our civilization. However, when the advantages offered by time and place are not made use of or when the ore is not processed properly, a value, a brand does not appear in the real sense. | Page 6

Ayhan Denizci welcomes orders from Brunei Sultanate despite its proximity to China Started his business activities in 2006 with the purpose of exporting only Ayhan Denizci exports his products which he manufactures under the roof of his own company named as “Marinero Home” to more than 40 countries today. works they performed and due to the interest they have received, they were put in a position where they start exporting to 12 countries. He continued, “The number of countries to which we export reached 40. We explored the international exhibitions. Accordingly, the current customer portfolio started to be formed. Later on, we improved this by the vacations we made to foreign countries. Accordingly we presented the country products and the products in terms of countries.”

Ayhan Denizci Tekstil Sanayi ve Ltd. Şti. achieved adding Brunei Sultanate to its chain of countries under the list of export. The significance of the export in question is the market structure of Brunei Sultanate and the geographic structure of the country. Due to this country having a rich and diverse market structure, they have a geographic position close to China especially when the products of the luxury segment are being imported. With its aggressive importer approach, China had succeeded to dominate the markets listed under its export targets. Ayhan Denizci taking orders from a country located at a geographic location so close to China inspires the young entrepreneurs in home textile of Turkey. Ayhan Denizci Tekstil Sanayi ve Ltd. Şti. introduced the quality of home textile industry of Turkey to Brunei Sultanate which is amongst the richest markets of Far East. The company exported USD 15,000 worth of curtains to the country located 9,000 kilometers from Turkey in the first batch. The company, which started business activities in 2006 with limited opportunities, exports its products they manufacture at their facilities at Bursa Demirtaş Organized

Industry Zone under the name “Marinero Home” with limited means to all over the globe. “Alternative Markets are important” Mr. Ayhan Denizci, owner of Ayhan Denizci Tekstil Sanayi ve Tic. Ltd. Şti. states that he is on manufacturers’ side and they make a great contribution to exports at every opportunity. He stated that they realized their first exports to Eastern European Markets and that they supply competitive goods to Poland, Hungary, Czech Republic and Greece. Ayhan Denizci also pointed out that they obtain positive feedback from the

Ayhan Denizci said that the major markets are important however they attached a lot of importance to the alternative markets and clarified, “The crisis in Europe affected us detrimentally just like the rest of the world. We were looking at alternative markets. Most important ones of those countries were Far Eastern markets. The trade made with that region had also attracted us. In this frame, we penetrated into Singapore, Indonesia, Malaysia and Thailand with a busy marketing program. We entered the Chinese market last year and we have good export figures. In addition, we are proud and happy for having realized the exports to Brunei Sultanate during the last 1.5 years.”

market. Despite this we export over 1 billion us dollars and succeed to reach the growth on 2013.Our difference on production quality and different product taste helped us to find new markets. In 2014 we performed over 30 million $ of export. This corresponds to 33 % growth compared to 2013. When most companies stuck in Middle East and Iraq, we ,as Hastavuk, focused on Africa and Turkic Republics in middle Asia. In near future, we think that Africa will be in a strong market position as Middle East. Because when we look at Africa population who needs protein with insufficient resources, we can see different portfolios. Of course Africa is not a deep market as Iraq but it is more shallow and stable. This year for the first time in Turkey we export chicken products to Lebanon and Qatar. We sell in Namibia and Ethiopia and we aim for new markets this year. The biggest reason of not penetrating these markets was the logistics, but now we see that chicken and chicken products sectors have learned the logistics.

Mr. Şahin Aydemir, General Manager

For this year, we aim 40 million $ for export. We plan to add 3 new countries to our current market. Japan is an important market for our sector. In Middle East we aim to place the quality and valuable products market on a solid ground. We move the 25-30 percent of our production to export markets which are already 26 countries and we want to stabilize this ratio. This year another aim is to increase the export countries to 30. But our priority is to meet the demand in domestic market. Our purpose is to establish selling points to our last consumers. We are carrying out several pro-

jects in this regard. Our slaughterhouse is open for consumers 24 hours a day and 365 days of a year. Even we invite people who are on the way back home from their holidays to see our production style. In 2014, 1583 consumers visited our slaughterhouse. 85% of visitors are women. Almost all visitors are our end consumers. On certain days of the month we organize with local markets a plant trip. We will continue our transparent production approach this year. Up to know, we invest 120 million $. We plan 30 million $ investment for this year. We need 50 million dollars more investment to say, ”We have succeeded.” That will make us reach 200 million $ for investment. Last year, we finished also our feed factory investment. We produce 1000 tons a day. The number of our workers was over 1400 people then. We closed 2014 with 40% turnover increase. İn 2015, we focused to fill the capacity in our slaughterhouse to 200 thousand chicken/day and 15% growth for parent-stock.”

Tourism in the context of progress and the Bursa Model Every brand, product, and value has an essence, an ore. Processing of the essence (natural, historical, humane), transformation into product, and establishment of marketing strategies… All of it requires integrated policies and process management. Production of values and sustainability of their representation is a discussion-worthy subject. Firstly, the concept ‘Sustainable Tourism’ that has been expressed in 1992 Rio Conference is very important in this sense. Sustainable tourism is defined as a production style and an industry that does not sacrifice

social, cultural, environmental values to tourism. On the other hand, World Tourism Organization describes sustainable tourism as a tourism style that improves the life quality of the host country, provides high quality service experience for the guests, and nourishes the quality of the environment. The sustainability of tourism primarily depends on the sustainability of the ecological processes. The preservation of historical and cultural legacies, the respect for the values of the people is essential. We, as a country and a city, locate our natural, historical, and humane assets which we accept to be universal legacies, as a unique ecosystem that benefits the humanity and produces values. What we are trying to establish has a meaning beyond tourism investments.

Bursa: The Common Heritage of Humanity For instance, the registry of your values as the World Culture Heritage is very important for sustainable tourism. Carrying the UNESCO logo means being involved in the global tourism web. After serious efforts and work, Bursa has been registered to the UNESCO World Heritage List with the file titled “Bursa and Cumalıkızık: The Rise of the Ottoman Empire”. In the 38th World Heritage Committee Meeting that took place in the capital of Qatar, Doha, from Turkey, the Caravanserai District, Sultan’s Social Complexes, Cumalıkızık District in Bursa and Bergama in Izmir was decided to be added in the list. Values of Bursa are in 998th in the world and 12th in Turkey in UNESCO World Heritage List. By 2014, of all the 1007 worldwide registered cultural and natural properties in the UNESCO World Heritage List, Bursa has in total 80 historical and cultural properties included from 6 districts.

The European Historic Thermal Towns Association (EHTTA) and Bursa Bursa is a center of history and civilizations as much as it is a city of healing with thermal treasures. Dozens of historical baths and thermal hot springs from three grand civilizations of Rome, Byzantium, and Ottoman keeps healing. Turkey which signed up for great transformations in health sector in the recent years, takes firm steps forward in the way of becoming the “Health Base” of Europe and the Middle East. Bursa being the first and the only member from Turkey in the European Historic Thermal Towns Association (EHTTA); Sultan’s socials complexes, Caravanserai District and Cumalıkızık Village being registered to UNESCO World Culture Heritage are important progresses and great success that emphasizes the global identity of Bursa… This way, we have more opportunities to share the legacy that we have with all of the humanity. On the other hand, besides Bursa was accepted to EHTTA 2 years ago, our city will host the 2015 October EHTTA General Assembly Meeting. It should be explicitly expressed that we refuse to commercialize the historical, cultural, and natural treasures of Bursa for a pittance. Our precise aim is to transform our values into an industry, a sustainable development model.

Tourism and culture together in Bursa Development by tourism but neglecting the culture is an outdated and a bad development model. For example, because Venice has built all of the investments in tourism, during the crisis in Europe, it has taken serious strokes. Both the inhabitants of the city and the number of the tourists decreased seriously. Likewise, Greece is facing a similar situation these days. This leads to the redefinition of tourism in the 21st century. The definition gains a new form. We, Bursa Governorship, and all of the share holders of the city try to act based on this new form. Transformation

of tourism to a culture industry, using it as a catalyst in the development of economy and employment is another aim that we have. The preservation of the autochthonic spirit of Bursa and transfer of the historical, natural, and cultural heritages to next generations is our biggest desire. We, as Turkey and Bursa, have covered a lot of ground to achieve this aim. For example the number of tourists coming to the country has increased 30-fold during the last 10 years. Accordingly, tourism income has increased by 60-70-fold. It is a fact that tourism has also developed in many respects at this time interval. Tourism, not just the economy, has become a branch of science strictly related to politics, psychology, art, nature, sports, culture, human rights etc. We cannot regard tourists as temporary visitors that we host for only a few days anymore. Tourists, now, go home not with some souvenir photos but with hours’ length video records. Every year 30 million tourists shoot documentary films about Turkey! They take these documentaries to Saudi Arabia, Japan, United States, Kuwait, Dubai and share them with the world.

A new global tourism destination: Bursa Tourism is a field where all sensibilities and delicacies are being tested. Tourism, now progresses with universal standards, emotions and observations appealing to all of the humanity. Branding, producing strategies, and increasing the income are of course important. However, in a world where we can reach even to the most remote areas of the Earth in a few hours, we should use these communication and transportation opportunities to enhance the universal standards. Contribution of tourism to world peace and universal fellowship should be in our priorities list. Only the satisfied departure of tourists that visited Turkey, Grand City Bursa from our country, our city is not enough. We can add values to the lives of 30 million people beyond service quality. Bursa Governorship, Bursa Metropolis Municipality, and Bursa Culture and Tourism Publicity Association along with all share holders of the city, this is the tourism model that we wish to adopt and develop. Going beyond service quality for our visitors, we wish to diversify our service by culture art, history and nature. This model requires the publicity of our city and country with its cultural, artistic, and humane values in a more advanced level. Bursa takes steps in the way of becoming a global tourism destination. It acts with the purpose of an admirable contribution to the 2023 Tourism objectives of Bursa and Turkey.

A bright future lies ahead for “Bursa-The Great City” Bursa, being renowned for its unique geographical position, natural beauties and climate, including its proximity to sea and Uludag, has turned out to be an ideal place for tourism and quality health services. BURSA-Bursa, one of the largest metropolitan areas of Turkey with more than two million inhabitants, became a city which is aimed to be transformed into a “Brand City.” We have recently interviewed , Governor of Bursa. The interview follows:

Could you brief us on your vision and the activities related to a brand new Bursa? As a matter of fact, we are living in a century of brands. The cities are more marked than the countries to which they belong. As known, we have recently launched our motto under the name of “Bursa- The Great City” coupled with our new logo. We believe that this logo, inspired by the riches of the city would pave the way for contributing to the branding process of Bursa. We know that being quality conscious is a prerequisite for a brand formation.

As known, Turkey attracts Arab tourists in recent years. Bursa welcomes majority of Arab tourists preferring Turkey. What would you like to say about this trend? Bursa has turned out to be a city of summits and international gatherings such as Balkan Economic Summit and Uludağ Economic Summit. Arab Economic Summit was held recently. Arab and Middle Eastern tourism has gained momentum in recent years. Apart from being an industrial city, Bursa has a rich culture and tourism capacity that welcome Arab tourists. Many Arab business people are eager to make investments in housing and shopping mall projects. Almost thirty percent of tourists going on holiday at the Uludağ ski resort are Arabs. The city has been a profitable place for Arab investors for many years. Both city and mountain hotels show full occupancy.

Upon completion of İstanbulİzmir highway, what projects do you have to attract the interests of tourists for Bursa? It takes one hour or one and a half hours from Bursa to İstanbul depending on your choice by sea. Upon the completion of İstanbul-İzmir Highway, it will be one hour by land transportation. Indeed, Bursa’s proximity to İstanbul offers many advantages to both cities. We are coordinating a series of mutually fruitful projects by cooperating with The Turkish Ministry of Culture and Tourism.

We participate in fairs and exhibitions held in İstanbul to convey the message of Bursa, by publicizing natural, historic and cultural riches of the city. During the fairs, our booths arouse great interest more than ever. Actually, Bursa assumes a unique position to contribute to Istanbul in various aspects.

Whenever Bursa is mentioned, Uludağ comes to mind. Will Uludağ become Turkey’s Davos? What do think about the future of Uludağ? The cities have their own symbols. Being the 5th national park of the country, Uludağ is the symbol of Bursa. We cooperate with the Turkish Ministry of Forestry and Water Works in order to upgrade the infrastructural facilities of Uludağ, one of the most prominent tourism centers of Turkey. As known, we have an aerial lift line in Bursa connecting the city of Bursa with the nearby ski resort area and national park at mountain Uludağ. Initially, we had aerial tramway line, it served long until it was replaced by a modern system of gondola lift and extended into ski resort area. The installation of a new line became unavoidable due to increased demand by tourists. Uludağ hosts 104 endemic plants. We are planning to initiate Endemic Plants Botanic Garden located in Uludağ National Park, by cooperating with Uludağ University. We restored our aerial lift line. By doing so, we are able to transfer 3,000,000 passengers to Uludağ annually. Now, I ask you the same question:

Could you mention about thermal and health tourism potential of Turkey? As it is the case for Turkey, Bursa has its own targets for 2023. From this standpoint, we are planning put into far reaching projects. Bursa Jeothermal AŞ (Bursa Geothermal Inc.) was established to utilize from the thermal resources of the city. Bursa’s water resources were analyzed and they are found to be hyperthermal and mineral waters. Bursa hosts a geothermal area that boasts a number of hot springs. The province is a place to come if you want a traditional experience because Turkish baths are known throughout the world. Traditional bathhouses with charming tile designs and arching ceilings can be found all around the central Çekirge

Bursa, cradle of civilizations for centuries and first capital of the Ottoman Empire, hosts diverse range of historic and cultural riches.

district of Bursa. The various minerals in the waters are known to have healing properties. It should be noted that water is also transferred to a number of area hotels, which operate their own mineral pools for guests. It is a well-known fact that people discovered the therapeutic powers of Bursa’s thermal springs centuries ago. With one of the best climates in the world, Bursa has turned to be one of the ideal psychological and physical health centers for well-being. Turkish Government adopts health tourism as a major policy item. Within this framework, three provinces of Turkey have been selected for health tourism. One of them is Bursa. Turkey is estimated to host 65,000 patients in a year. These patients will be distributed to the provinces, particularly for Bursa. 10 billion dollars revenue are expected to be realized from the health tourism in Turkey until the year 2018. Promotion of European spa culture brings with it three different concepts: welfare, health, and tradition. Bursa, with its rich and vast cultural heritage, combines welfare, health and tradition for centuries. Bursa has been approved as a member of European Historical Thermal Towns

Association (EHTTA) at the meeting of Technical Committee of EHTTA which was gathered in Belgium on 15 March, 2013. Bursa has been a part of European Historical Thermal Destination which has been authorized by the Council of Europe. It is evident that Bursa’s successful performance in health tourism will increasingly continue and Bursa will be capital city of Turkey as far as health tourism is concerned.

What projects do you have for promoting Bursa abroad? Bursa has a great potential with its abundant industrial and agricultural sector. As known, Bursa hosts migrants from Balkan countries. Thus, these people act as a bridge between Bursa and Balkan countries. We display Bursa’s cultural, historic and economic riches by participating in various fairs and exhibitions thereby contributing to promotion of Bursa abroad efficiently.

Could you sum up Bursa’s economic outlook? Bursa, being an industrialized and export-oriented province of Turkey, has been contributing to Turkish economy for years. With its population of

2,787,539, Bursa ranks 4th in terms of its economic development. Bursa, with its 13 organized industrial zone including 1371 industrial establishment, employing 138,338 persons. Technical works are underway for increasing the number of industrial zones from 13 to 22; thereby increasing the number of employed to 170,926. Bursa accounts for75 percent of total synthetic yarn production, 75 percent of automobile production, 48 percent of truck and pick-up production, 2 percent of minibus production, 10 percent of bus production, 54,75 percent of total vehicle exports. Bursa accounts for a remarkable share of Turkey’s readymade garment production. It is a rich province in terms of its water resources. 70 percent of Turkey’s mineral water and 10 percent of spring water are produced in Bursa. With its qualified and competent manpower, Bursa excels in textile, automotive, machinery, furniture and the related industries. Apart from being an industrial center of Turkey, Bursa is also a renowned agricultural hub. It is a prominent center for health and thermal tourism. As for the energy sector, Bursa’s private and public sector produce 2827 MW energy; 1610 MW of which is from the public sector, 1217 MW from the private sector. Bursa, being a European city makes its presence felt in foreign markets through its brand-new products. Bursa, cradle of civilizations for centuries and first capital of the Ottoman Empire, hosts diverse range of historic and cultural riches.

How do you imagine the future of Bursa? There is no limit to imagination when it comes to Bursa. To sum up, we can say that a promising and bright future lie ahead for Bursa. We are convinced that Bursa will be able to reach at its 2023 targets by utilizing its potential in an efficient manner.

Metropolitan Municipality restores Green Bursa makes its presence felt Roman amphitheater through its historic riches Bursa, the first capital of the Ottoman Empire with a history dating back to centuries at the heart of the silk and spice trade and Turkey’s fourth largest city. The city, which has been the capital of many civilizations for centuries, is the hub of many monuments and historical works nowadays. The city’s skyline is comprised of historical landmarks varying from mosques, madrasas and baths. Attracting attention for its natural beauty as well as its rich cultural heritage Bursa is also a much preferred holiday resort for winter sports. Uludağ in Bursa is frequented by both winter and outdoor sports enthusiasts. Well-known for its large shopping centers, bazaars and museums Bursa has a temperate climate. The region is cool in the summer and mild in the winter.

Protocol on the restoration of historical amphitheater in Iznik belonging to the Roman era was sent to Ministry of Culture and Tourism, said Recep Altepe, metropolitan mayor of Bursa. The protocol covers restoration works that will be made in the 2000 year-old amphitheater in Iznik, the only remains of its kind in the region.

The first impression of the city might be that of a large, concrete-ridden modern metropolis that is betraying its largely recognized Turkish epithet of Yeşil Bursa (“Green Bursa”), and its historical prominence as being the cradle of the Ottoman state; however, upon a closer look you will see it really lives up to its name, by proudly displaying its Ottoman heritage in the shape of many mosques, tombs, and lovely quarters of old houses, as well as by harboring many pleasant parks, which fill the city with fresh air, and provide the weary traveller some shade to rest in—and even if you haven’t found the parks sufficient enough to have this city earned the honorific of “green”, then the lush woodlands of Mt. Uludağ is just above that steep hill.

Accompanied by governor of Iznik prefecture Huseyin Karamese and Iznik mayor Osman Sargin, Altepe visited the ruins, and said, “I hope that in a year or two it will be one of the rare venues for artistic and touristic events with all its beauties. There are many historical assets in the region, belonging to the both Islamic civilization and valuable for Islam and Christianity. The amphitheater is still standing after two thousand years. Digs in the region have been going on for about 50 years. We will provide funds necessary for the completion of the project. Archeological process will soon begin for both exploration and restoration. It will assume its historical mission to host several touristic and artistic events.” On the occasion of the visit, governor of Iznik prefecture Huseyin Karamese emphasized on the importance of the location that was the center for four civilizations in Marmara region. He said, “This the only

theater of Romans. A protocol was signed between municipality and the ministry. I thank to the mayor Altepe and all of the peo ple that worked on the project.”

In 2014, Bursa and a nearby village of Cumalıkızık were added to the UNESCO world heritage list. The remains at several sites illustrate the urban and rural system establishing the Ottoman Empire in the early 14th century.

Bursa, due south of Istanbul across the Sea of Marmara, for its beautiful mosques and other early Ottoman architecture, for its silk-filled bazaars. Hundreds of foreign companies have settled in Bursa’s industrial zones, which have become centers of Turkey’s automotive and textile industries. Almost two-thirds of the vehicles that Turkey is expected to export to foreign markets this year are assembled in Bursa. The capital of many civilizations Bursa is blessed with many natural and historical sites that attract the attention of the ecotourism and culture tourism sectors. Bursa is literally an open-air museum with its many castles, churches, lodges, mosques, mausoleums, madrasas, museums, inns, bridges, spas and cultural centers bearing the traces of history and different civilizations. It is possible to come across a hidden heritage in every corner of the city. With its natural areas and parks, Bursa is the first choice for sports lovers. The coastal and mountainous sites of the area are ideal for sport enthusiasts who want to spend some entertaining time full of adrenaline. Uludag welcomes all skiing, snowboarding and mountaineering enthusiasts with great pleasure.

Cumalıkızık invites all tourists who want to explore the lifestyle in the old district of Bursa. It is a highly recommended must-see place that is worth the visit before leaving Bursa. The spas and thermal hotels are among the most valuable assets of Bursa. While relaxing in the healing waters of the thermal springs you will feel the tranquility invading your body from top to toe. The local cuisine, which has originated from the Ottoman cuisine and been enriched with ingredients brought by traders from distant regions, is famous for its delicious and original dishes. While the world-famous Iskender Kebab, served with pita and thinly sliced delicious meat will delight your taste buds the traditional desserts and candied chestnuts will become your favorite after-dinner desserts. Silk, which has been the most important product and trade item of Bursa is processed with great efforts so that high quality fabric of silk is obtained. It is highly recommended that you take a look at these special fabrics made of pure silk before leaving Bursa. Last but not least, Bursa is inviting you to explore the cultural heritage that has evolved under the influence of the Silk Road.

Bursa Medical Park Hospital in the field of Neurosurgery! possible”. “Thus, nerve can recover and symptoms will clearly and faster regress” he added.

Neurosurgery Clinic of the Medicalpark Bursa Hospital serves domestic and international patients by academician staff with international education background in strict concordance with the mission of the Medicalpark Hospitals Group, “Health for everybody”.

Assoc. Prof. Melih Çekinmez clarified the fact that full recovery may not be achieved in some conditions of the “Cauda Equina Syndrome” and he emphasized that irreversible complications, such as urinary incontinence or strength and/or sensory deficit, may be experienced, although correct surgery is successfully performed. Mr. Çekinmez concluded that the consideration is to make patient survive best possible quality life, while timing of the surgery is decided, and “the most common mistake in the lumbar hernia is to make the decision ‘there is hernia, and surgery is required’ or ‘there is no hernia and thus, surgery is not required’ solely based on evaluating radiological films on a negatoscope” he added and emphasized that a detail medical history should be first obtained and radiological studies should be evaluated in the light of the neurological examination.

Spinal surgery operations (cervical, thoracal and lumbar discectomies, degenerative spine surgeries and instrumentations), trauma surgery (epidural, subdural and intra-parenchymal hematomas, compression fractures, cranioplasties, spine fractures and spondylolisthesis, vertebroplasty, kyphoplasty), neuro-oncological tumor surgeries (Glial tumors, metastatic tumors, meningiomas, pituitary adenoma surgeries, posterior fossa surgeries, cerebellopontine angle tumors, skull base tumors, skull base tumors), congenital anomalies (craniocytosis surgeries, meningocele, meningomyelocele, hydrocephalus surgeries, neurovascular surgery (aneurysms, arteriovenous malformation, cavernoma, spinal AVM and AVF surgeries).

Low back pain and treatment Assoc. Prof. Melih Çekinmez, from Neurosurgery Clinic of Bursa Medical Park Hospital, specified that almost everybody suffers low back pain at any time of the life. He emphasized that low back pains are mostly characterized with mechanical aches resulting from daily rush and sprain/strain and added that medications and physiotherapy may help those pains. He added that for low back pain actually secondary to the lumbar

hernia, medications or physiotherapy may be insufficient and time lost secondary to insufficient time will negatively influence the outcome of the surgery.

“Cauda Equina syndrome may result with paraplegia secondary to complete impingement of nerves originating from the spinal cord by the herniated disc” said Assoc. Prof. Melik Çekinmez, who underlined the importance of selecting best therapeutic option for each patient. Mr. Çekinmez explained that this

Assoc. Prof. Melih Çekinmez specified that those conditions necessarily require operation and time lost secondary to insufficient physiotherapy or medication therapy will negatively influence the outcome of surgery, and he warned “the patient should be operated and the compression should be eliminated as soon as

“Complaints of the patient should be listened and the neurological examination should be directed accordingly, and thus, the best possible method should be preferred” he said. Emphasizing the necessity that a detailed evaluation is made to clear out whether there is strength, sensory and/or reflex deficit and the picture is globally considered along with the lumbar MRI, Assoc. Prof. Melih Çekinmez mentioned that the patient should be clearly informed about benefits and risks of the operation and a solution is preferred in this end.

The Ozturk Plug, a novel approach to the treatment of anal fistula

Today, health tourism has important share in tourism revenues of the several countries. It is a well-known fact that health tourism revenues of some developing countries are much more higher than their any other tourism incomes.

Health tourism, which means to procure health care from another countries due to certain reasons, may also be a significant potential source of income in developing countries. Our country experienced some fundamental health problems that could not overcome in the past. However, in line with successful implementation of health care reform, health tourism has become a crucial item on the agenda. Those people who are unable to reach to medical services in their own countries divert their health demand to other countries. The duration and very long process of treatment is another reason for health tourism demand. When we look at our country in general and Bursa in particular, we can say that we are able to offer competitive health services and medical treatment in terms of quality and price. Health care is very expensive and not easily reachable in the world’s many most developed countries, It is known that an appointment, even for very simple operations can be given after several months. Our country has turned out to be efficient in this regard. Native and foreign patients can benefit from quality health care in return for reasonable prices. Therefore, our country is preferred with a rapidly increasing demand of health care from abroad.

The health services demand directed to our country arise mainly from the African countries and the Turkic Republics. Bursa, being renowned for its unique geographical position, natural beauties and climate, including its proximity to sea and Uludag, has turned out to be an ideal place for quality health services. Health services produced in Bursa are competitive in terms of price and quality, judged by the international standards. Bursa has been able to combine health services and tourism in an ideal way. So, Bursa attracts diverse range of tourists demanding health and medical services in recent years, with its modern and competent hospitals which comply with most up to date technology and know-how. We are convinced that Bursa’s successful performance in health tourism will increasingly continue and Bursa will be capital city of Turkey as far as health tourism is concerned. Our country and Bursa in particular provide good health care services to Muslim countries which we have common culture and religion. Therefore this fact is a pride and honor for Bursa.

Ersun Topal, M.D, specialist on General Surgery, affiliated to Doruk Health Group in Bursa, delivered a speech about ‘Obesity Surgery and Tube Stomach Operation’:

Bursa Medical Park Hospital starts health tourism

Health tourism, which is undertaken by Bursa governor, local governments and health organizations is yielding tangible results. It seems that there is an important development for 200 foreigner patients in private hospital Medical Park. General Manager of Medical Park Assoc. Prof. Sedat Demir says that foreigner patients will leave 10 billion dollar currency to our country. We asked experienced manager about contribution of Health tourism:

Does Bursa become an important center of health? Why not? Our country infrastructure is strong also Bursa is one of three cities which has name about health tourism in the Ministry so this assertive situation might be true. I would like to say that Bursa Medical Park has taken important steps about health tourism before this situation there was a partnership and association among of Bursa governor, local governments and Health organizations. Works which are with Bursa Health Tourism Association have given results.

What are things that you understand about Health Tourism? How should it be defined? First of all we should understand that patients have treatment in other countries due to can not have treatment in their country with some reasons. I can answer which reasons can cause for this situations. Either health care might be too expensive or there might be insufficient problems about Hospital, equipment, technological infrastructure or there is no doctor for treatments or health care can not be reached easily. These problems are in even the biggest countries of the world. You might wait for intervention up to 6 months later which we can actualize in 24 hours.

Is there any problem about costs? Yes there is because social security in western countries is not comprehensive as our country. There are important problems about costs per unit, so foreigner countries are looking for solutions to be able to have treatment in any other country for their patients. This is one reason of the starting point for health

tourism. Another reason is that there is not health infrastructure. There are health infrastructure problems in Republics of Turkey, Middle east and Africa. They have demand for their patients to be treated in any other countries due to they can not have health service.

Are health infrastructure and costs attractive for foreigner patients in our country? Infrastructures are good in almost every point of The Turkey. There is not treatment that cannot be done in Bursa which is known in the world. Our costs are lower comparing with the western countries. In addition, quality of our physicians is quite high and we can provide this services in a short time it means we can respond whatever patients and their family need, in short time.

How does stroke happen?

What ‘s happening in steps of Tourism? There are commissions for foreigner patients to apply in their countries. We are in constant contact with these commissions moreover we have Medical Park offices in some countries. We evaluate patients’ applications from our offices and we provide both accommodation and treatment facilities for patients. In this point Bursa is becoming attractive place which has ottoman culture, historical richness and the location of sea and mountain.

Did not other countries explore this Health Tourism before? Of course they did. For example this health tourism was being done in India and Taiwan. There was restriction Dutch and English patients could not have treatment and tourism services as they demand. It was seen that we have advantages comparing with those countries. We can provide both good health care and we can work faster comparing with those countries however Bursa’s health organizations are preferred by patients of Arab, Middle West and Central Asia because we are close to these cultures. Each patient knows Bursa very well. We are already in UNESCO WORLD HERITAGE so different

agents started to bring their patients to us also we give accommodation in hotels to patients. Bursa Medical Park Hospital is one of the rare hospitals which can provide treatment for 3.step of treatments.

Can new hospitals be built for Bursa? Healthcare free zone is in Ministry agenda nowadays. Bursa is one of strong provinces about this issue and we support it in each step we can reach. When the Project is brought into action in these locations will be new health organizations. We anticipate that such a place can be created in location which we have hot water sources. In these locations, limiting factors of visa, tax and accommodation will be solved easily and approximately 200 patients come to our hospital due to technological infrastructure which can not be found everywhere, reasonable costs, combination of history and culture factors.in brief, partially our health tourism works have begun and continue.

There are two poles in our brain. The one on the right is responsible for the movements of our left arm and left leg and the other pole is responsible for our right arm and leg and our talking talent. As a result of disrupted blood inflow to these places, a stroke on the arm and leg at one side emerges. This is called stroke. This situation is often caused by vascular events which have two types: 1) Ischemic, that is, thromboembolism-based events: Getting damaged of brain tissue as a result of thromboembolism of brain veins. The reason of stroke is thromboembolism at approximately 80% of patients. 2) Bleeding-based events: It emerges with a sudden bleeding at people who have been suffering high blood pressure or have aneurysm at the shape of ballonet in their brains. What are the symptoms of stroke? Depending on which part of the brain was damaged and at what degree, there can be different clinical symptoms. The most important symptom is the paralyzation of half of the body either at right or left with the arm and leg. In addition to movability loss there could be various symptoms such as losses of conscious, detection, sense, talking disorder, sight disorder and memory loss. Who are under risk? Especially high blood pressure sufferers, patients such as diabetics and cardiovascular disease should be careful against stroke. Obesities and high-cholesterol, smoking, lack of physical movements, alcohol and some medicines increase the risk of stroke. Rehabilitation of stroke Since the state of a patient is better at strokes based on embolisms, the rehabilitation should start as early as the next day. For bleeding diseases it waits for a few days. In some cases operation could be necessary. The bleeding is followed up by methods such as tomography scan of the head or MR and necessary

prescription is generated. Since the patient has to stay in bed during this period, it would be important to be careful about his/her position in bed, his/her nutrition and urination release with special attention on not having any infection. What is the objective of rehabilitation and how is it made? The goal of rehabilitation is to bring the patients to their previous state. It is to decrease their physical losses and increase their functional

capacities. It is to provide them to stand up by themselves in their daily living activities and to increase their living qualities. Returning to their professions or establishing new jobs are also targeted at appropriate patients. It is very important that these type of appropriate patients should be taken care by expert teams at rehabilitation centers which have sufficient equipment. Rehabilitation is a longterm healing period. Since the case of every patient is different than others, it is not possible to determine a time at the beginning. Firstly it is targeted that the patient would regain the power to undertake daily basic needs by himself or herself. The patient’s developments in eating and drinking, putting on and off their clothes, toilette and cleaning affairs are closely observed. The patient is subjected to balance training with computerized and biofeedback featured equipment. Those patients who develop at sitting and standing are subjected to walking training. In addition to neurophysiologic exercises performed with the presence of a physiotherapist during walking training, the patient is subjected to robotic rehabilitation training as well. The robotic rehabilitation not only teaches walking to the patients but also stepping at orderly pattern. Although some patients adopt this very easily, walking process takes longer time at some others. These obstacles are overcome by programs utilized by experienced teams and they are led to activities by walking with support first and then without support. Sense training is offered for or movement and orientation disorders and decreased or increased sense problems occurred during stroke. For patients who lost senses, should be given protective sense training during rehabilitation. With the approaches of expert healing methods the eating and drinking talents are regained for stroke-hit individuals affected by neuromotor functions such as chewing and swallowing talents and tongue movements. The ergo-therapists apply cognitive rehabilitation in cases of the being affected of cognitive functions such as attention, memory, problem solving, expressing himself and praxis talents. The activities affected by cognitive disorders are determined and they are included rehabilitation program in order to recover. When the training of a patient in a rehabilitation salon is completed he or she is subjected to activities to adopt outdoor and home living conditions. Most of the patients regain the walking talent and can go back to their working life at the end of rehabilitation process. The patient has to attend the determined program eagerly and their families have to know the importance of this work.

What to do to protect from stroke? You should dedicate some time for yourself every day; you should have an orderly living and balanced nutrition principles. You should be careful against obesity and inactivity and the calorie-exercise balance has to be maintained. In addition to all these, you should regularly have check-ups to enjoy a life full of welfare, peace and pleasurable.

Town of Yıldırım hosts many sacred values It’s a central district in the east part of Bursa. Gokdere is border between the districts Osmangazi and Yıldırım. This district was founded in 1987, when Bursa became a metropolitan city. Yıldırım is rich of sacred and historical values. Some titles are given below:

The Kulliya of Emir Sultan It is located on a hill in the outskirts of Uludağ, in a quarter, which is also named as Emir Sultan. It was constructed by Hundi Fatma Hatun, who was the daughter of Yıldırım Bayezid and wife of Emir Sultan, during the early 15th century. It has a mosque, a tomb, a hammam, and a dervish lodge. Unfortunately today, the hammam is ruined and the dervish lodges is destroyed. There are six fountains around the mosque and a bigger fountain in the courtyard of the mosque. Kulliya of Emir Sultan is an important religious visit spot although it was not built for a sultan it is considered among as a “Sultan Kulliya”. Kulliya of Emir Sultan, in which religious ceremonies called as mevlut (birth) are held everyday, attracts attention of the tourists and it has also many visitors among the Bursa folk. The boys of Bursa are brought here before their circumcision ceremony; many young couples visit Tomb of Emir Sultan just before they get married. People who want to make a vow come here. Even the funeral ceremonies are being held in here. Having a special history and spiritual texture and being the most important place in Bursa regarding the tourism potential the Emir Sultan Mosque and Tomb of Emir Sultan are expected to preserve their historical and spiritual texture after the landscape planning and preservation efforts of Bursa Metropolitan Municipality. Emir Sultan was born in Buhara. He is also known as Es-Seyyid Semsuddin Mehmed bin Aliyyul Buhari. He migrated to Bursa in 1391 and married with Hundi Hatun, daughter of Yıldırım Bayezid. He died in 1429 because of black death. You can see the Kulliya of Yıldırım and even Yeşil Turbe (Green Tomb) from the hill

which hosts the Kulliya of Emir Sultan, which is the number one in the list of most visited mosques and tombs in Turkey

Emir Sultan Mosque It was constructed by Hundi Fatma Hatun, who was the daughter of Y›ld›r›m Bayezid and wife of Emir Sultan, during the early 15th century. There is a large courtyard at the entrance section of the mosque which has three gates. The mosque has the largest and most beautiful courtyard among the mosques in Bursa. The mosque was completely destroyed in 1795 but in 1804 Selim the III constructed it once again.

Emir Sultan Tomb The tomb of Emir Sultan, who lived three different reigns of three Ottoman Sultans and also who girded three Sultans (Yıldırım, Celebi Mehmed, and Muradthe Second) with sword, is located on the north of the Emir Sultan Mosque. Although it has lost its originality, some people still claims that the tomb of Emir Sultan is the fifth important place in Muslim world. The Tomb of Emir Sultan, who was named as Emir due to being a descend of Prophet Mohammed, is located at the center of the tomb behind brass bars. In addition there are four other tombs in the tomb which belong to Emir Ali, son of Emir Sultan, Hundi Hatun, his wife and his two daughters.

Kulliyas Of Bursa The Kulliya Of Yıldırım Yıldırım Bayezid built this kulliya (Complex of education, health and prayer) in 1390. It is one of the glorious monuments of Bursa. Outside of the kulliya’s mosque, there are kitchens, two Madrasas, a bath, an inn, the houses of the caretakers, a fountain a stall and a hospital. This kulliya, was in that period on a hill, in the east part of Bursa and was surrounded with a wall. To-

day, there is just the mosque, the bath, one Madrasa and the hospital left of it. The Kulliya of Yıldırım is the first important mosque that shows the Ottomans state culture, architectural culture and art history.

Darüşşifa Being one of the part of the Yıldırım Mosque, Darüşşifa was built by Yıldırım Bayezid in 1390. It was divided into as hospital and an asylum. It is accepted as the first hospital of the Ottomans. It is also said, that there was one head physician and three doctors. In the year 2001, it was repaired and restored to be used as an eye hospital.

Yıldırım Madrasa Located in the Yıldırım Mosque, this structure was built by Yıldırım Bayezid in 1390. It is the first Madrasa in the Ottoman Architecture, whose front was closed. The entry front was structured with Stones, the other parts were structured with bricks. That shows us, that Stones were more valuable than bricks. Structured from the stones of the entry front, others being made of brick show that they are more important than the others. Today it is being used as a dispensary and clinic.

Yıldırım Bayezid Tomb Located in the Yıldırım Mosque, this tomb was built by Emir Suleyman, son of Yıldırım Bayezid, in 1406. The architect is Ali, son of Huseyin. When Yıldırım Bayezid died, he was first burried in Aksehir, but then the he was brought to Bursa by his son Musa Celebi. It became the Pioneer of the other Ottoman tombs. It was restored in the years; 1669, 1825 and 1878. It experienced its greatest damage by the earthquake in 1855. There is also the tomb of his son Isa Celebi is there.

Yeşil Kulliya The Kulliya, which is located in Yeşil quarter, was built in 1419 by Celebi Sultan Mehmed. The Yeşil Turbe (Green Tomb) and the Yeşil Cami (Green Mosque), which are located within the kullliya are symbols of rebirth of Ottomans after the defeat of Ankara War with Timur. Consists of a mosque, a Madrasa, a tomb, a hammam, and an alms house, the difference of the Kulliya is that the elements of the complex built independently.

Yıldırım Mosque The mosque was constructed on a hill in Yıldırım region by Yıldırım Bayezid (1389 - 1402) around

1390s. It is one of the most brilliant monuments of Bursa The “Bursa Style” was first time used in this mosque. According to Ekrem Hakkı Ayverdi: “We encounter with a matured building. Workmanship is at its peak. The combination of the elements of the building, transition between surfaces, conjunctions between cut Stones and coating, and labor on every element; all of them are perfectly managed” (Early Ages of Ottoman Architecture).

Yeşil Mosqu The mosque was built in 1419 with the order of Celebi Sultan Mehmed. A reverse T-Planned building is the one of the most beautiful buildings of Bursa as well Turkey. Some Byzantine materials had been used for it. The facade over the main door is one of the most beautiful samples of the Turkish stone carving. The Interior walls of the mosque and the columns are completely covered with tiles. One of the most perfect examples of the tiling is the altar. With its geometrical and flower figures the altar is the one of the most outstanding part of the mosque. The window covers are the best examples of that era. There are very thin ornamentations,

flooring of the street. The framework of the upper floor is filled with half-timbered wall and covered with tiles in the Ottoman style. It is not possible to see the inside of the house from outside. Upper floors are decorated with bay windows.

Yeşil Tomb was built in 1421. Regarded as one of the symbols of Bursa, the Yeşil Tomb is like the continuance of Seljuk cupolas. There are several rooms under the tomb which was based on an eight cornered area and covered by single dome that sits on an elevated trimmer.

Two types of layout generally are observed for Cumalıkızık houses. One of these is the exterior courtyard surrounded by a high wall built by rubbles. Passing through this courtyard, one will encounter the entrance door, which prevents direct connection to the street.

which can never be seen in other mosques. There is a fountain within the mosque. The single-piece sprinkler of the fountain is unique.

Both inside and outside of the tomb is covered with colored glaze and ceramics in hexagonal or rectangular shape. The walls are in turquoise colored hexagonal plate shape ceramics and between them there are medallions made of ceramics. At the center of the tomb, on an octagonal bedplate elevated one level from the ground, the tomb of Mehmed the First is located. It is closed with a colored in yellow, white, blue, and indigo colored border. On the embossed ceramics it writes as Celebi Sultaan Mehmed and a short introductory word.

Madrasa Of Sultaniye Yeşil It was the most important madrasa of Bursa in the Ottoman era. The madrasa, which is located in Yeşil quarter, was built in 1419 by Celebi Sultan Mehmed. It is a part of the Yeşil Kulliya. The Madrasa of Sultaniye was an educational institution in which the highest ranked theologians and Islam academicians worked. It is one of the most beautiful madrasas in Bursa There are thirteen rooms,

one principal room, entrance cell and restrooms are located around a courtyard. There are cloisters in front of the rooms which are covered by a dome and vault. The building has been serving as the Museum of Turkish Islamic Works since 1975.

Cumalıkızık Cumalıkızık is a village that has preserved the texture of residential Ottoman architecture until the present time. These historic houses are now protected. Cumalıkızık was one of the first places settled by the Ottomans when they moved into Bursa. There are totally 270 historical houses in the village. Some of these houses are in process of restoration and maintenance. 180 of them are still being used as dwellings. Generally, the houses in Cumalıkızık have three story rooms; used by relatives to share them together in total cooperation and harmony. This village has 270 houses, which 180 of them are still in use. The privacy of the families was the primary concern during the construction of these houses. The ground floor, courtyard and the first floors of these houses were built by rubble and wooden walls in total accordance with the

However there is no courtyard in the second type of these houses. Living section of the house is directly available through the street door. The outside wall is strengthened with a horizontal beam embedded to it and there is also lightning and ventilation. The living area enables accessibility to the inner courtyard, stable, storages and stairs. The entrance door of the house is opened to both directions. These wings of the door generally made of walnut tree are attached by wrought iron braces and nails with large knobs. Door handles and knockers are also of wrought iron. The construction of the doors serves for the purpose of easiness while carrying the products and vehicles of agriculture inside. The living section is accessible from the outer courtyard or directly from the street surrounded by wooden columns on which the upper floor is perched on. The ground is paved with flat and wide stones. Living

section is the most widely used part of the Cumalıkızık houses. The productions which are reaped are temporarily stored, separated and arranged there. Chestnuts are shelled there. Wedding ceremonies are arranged there. Also the supplies of the heat are carefully stowed there. If the living section is higher than normal, a mezzanine will be constructed to store and keep the materials for a long time here. The depots, kitchen, lavatory, stable, hut and stove are on the ground floor, where the most of houseworks were carried out. The first floor with a lower height, in where the bedrooms, siting rooms, baths and stoves are located and the households were resided during the winter months. The second floor is used during the summer months. Along the hall, there are rooms, eyvan (a vaulted room with one side open to the court), doorsteps and sofas. The main room is the most carefully arranged on the upper floor. The flooring of the house is made by using beams and veneers nailed on them. Heating of the houses are provided by stoves. The roofs with two or four inclinations are covered by the tiles of the Ottoman/ Turkish style.
