Bursa’s sweet figs, branded the Duchess of Cambridge’s remedy

Bursa - Anadolu Agency

Bursa’s sweet and voluptuous figs, branded the Duchess of Cambridge’s remedy for a reportedly chronic morning sickness during her pregnancy, has felt the positive effect of the publicity by increasing its exports considerably compared to last year. Producers said income from the sale of the produce has reached a “historical record” – passing well above the $32 million bar – while they expressed gratitude for the promotion given by Kate Middleton’s entourage for the fruit which is not only delicious, but also rich in vitamins. Sales to the English market have jumped over 53 percent, in parallel with a Daily Mail report that said that the duchess turned to Bursa’s delicious fruit after trying endless ways to lessen the nausea of her pregnancy, including lavender biscuits and even hypnosis. Other Commonwealth countries have followed, including New Zealand. Sales to countries such as Israel, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Jordan and United Arab Emirates have also doubled. The fruit has accounted for an 18 percent share of Turkey’s total exports of fruits and vegetables, converting itself into the flag-bearer of Turkish agriculture. It remains unknown if the duchess is continuing her strict diet of leafy vegetables rich in folic acid such as Brussels sprouts, or is back to her beloved comfort food after giving birth. But one thing is certain, she became a Bursa figs spokesperson so much so that producers couldn’t have asked for anyone better, even in their wildest dreams.

The logo for Bursa introduced Covered by Unesco’s World Heritage List, Bursa attracts growing interest from international audiences with valuable historical assets, historical bazaar, the Khans region, Cumalikizik and Sultan Kulliyes. Kulliye is a complex of buildings, centered around a mosque and managed within a single institution, often based on a foundation, and composed of a madrasa (religious school), a clinic, kitchens, bakery, bathhouse, other buildings for various charitable services for the community and further annexes. Bursa is the first and only city in the European Union list of historical thermal cities in Turkey. Initiated by Bursa Cultural Promotion Union, a new logo has been developed and it was publicly announced in a special meeting held in Bursa. Following the meeting, governor Karaoglu and mayor Altepe jointly took the flag bearing the new logo on flagpole in front of the governor’s building at Heykel. Based on a form of tulip, the logo will be used in all official

communication materials and in the promotional activities about city of Bursa. In his speech on the occasion, governor Munir Karaoglu said, “While developing the concept of the logo we tried to cover all our values and to unite them at equal importance. We aimed to consolidate variety of interests in one visual figure. It is composed of two main figure and three main colors. One of the figures is tulip, a historical companion of our nation that was brought from Central Asia. The indispensable pattern of art produced by our civilization. It represents the unity. It is a deep-rooted form of art and architecture. The second

form, Çintemani, reflects the justice, power and wisdom that comes from Seljukian and Ottoman culture. Colors of the logo have been pointing out certain aspects of Bursa. Red reflects the mysteries, secrets, legends and hot springs in Bursa. It also symbolizes the coral red a color that is regarded as a technical victory of ceramics industry in Iznik during Ottomans and lost three hundred years ago. Dark blue is for the infinity, power and productivity. Blue is the symbol of water. Awliya Celebi, famous traveler in Ottoman era, had summarized Bursa by saying, “In short, it is consist only of water.” The slogan we

choose to accompany the new logo is “Ulu Sehir”, (Great City).” In his speech, Mayor Recep Altepe has pointed out the importance of logo and it’s value for the city, products, values and economy in Bursa. He said, “The logo will represent the quality and prestige in Bursa. The logo should be supported by smart applications to make it more functional. It will help us to aim new visions, to deliver and to introduce our assets and values to the world. Bursa, deserves to be a neighbor to stars. We are working in this direction.”

“Timsah Arena” arouses great interest at home and abroad Designed and constructed by Bursa Metropolitan Municipality, the new stadium of Bursa has aroused great interest both at home and abroad. The city of Bursa, the fourth most populous city of Turkey, has a new football stadium – the Timsah Arena. The name, meaning Crocodile Arena, is derived from the local football team, Bursaspor, having a strong influence in the stadium’s design. The structure’s most striking feature, its roof, resembles a crocodile curled around the ground, complete with open mouth. The stadium and the surrounding park are well connected with the public transport system. Also the city center is just a minutes-walk away. Adam Hurrey of The Telegraph daily has underlined and focused on “Timsah Arena Bursa” (Crocodile Arena) among the most striking stadium projects of the world such as: Estadio La Peineta (Atletico Madrid, 2017), Baku National Stadium (Azerbaijan, 2015), Zenit Arena (Zenit Saint Petersburg, 2016), Stade des Lumières (Lyon, 2015), Allianz Parque (Palmeiras, 2014), Nouveau Stade de Bordeaux (2015), CSKA Moscow Stadium (2015), New Ferenc Puskas Stadium (Budapest, 2018) and Al Wakrah Stadium (Qatar, 2022). It should also be noted that Crocodile Arena, with its charming and brand-new design, was awarded by Interna-

tional Property Awards. The New Bursa Stadium, the Timsah Arena (Crocodile Arena), is a reconstruction project by Bursa Metropolitan Municipality. The stadium’s project was introduced to the Turkish press on July 10, 2009. The compact design of the main stand building, the shadowing of internal areas by the extended roof (reduced air condition/passive ventilation) joined by natural daylight due to the translucent roof cover, use of grey water (water conservation/rainwater; 50%+ reduction of potable water use), permanent local gas cogeneration (usually 30% higher energy efficiency than general power grid) and roof integrated solar panels not only reduce the energy necessity of the stadium but contain also the chance for the stadium operator to supply the neighborhood with excessive power. Furthermore, according to the building sustainability long-life recyclable materials produced with a minimized energy input are applied as far as possible. The Timsah Arena, with its 6128 VIP seats, 256 protocol seats, 160 press seats, including parking facilities for 6500 vehicles, complies fully with the UEFA standards. The Timsah Arena stadium, with its spectacular roof, has a total capacity of 43,670 seats, replacing Bursa Stadium as Bursaspor’s, the city’s soccer team home ground.

Bursa renowned for home textiles and automotive exports Bursa has joined several other Anatolian cities that challenge Istanbul’s dominance with their own increasing economic power and a growing self-confidence.

Bursa, a former Ottoman capital surrounded by olive groves and nestled in the green foothills of the Uludag mountain range close to the southern shore of the Sea of Marmara, has a long history as an industrial city. But now, strengthened by its share in Turkey’s rise as an economic power in recent years, the city of 2.2 million people has started to step out of the shadow of its giant neighbor, İstanbul. Bursa has joined several other Anatolian cities that challenge Istanbul’s dominance with their own increasing economic power and a growing self-confidence. Bursa has already become a favorite destination for many visitors from Arab countries with its mixture of Ottoman history, a

cool climate and thermal baths. It’s no secret that Bursa has become a rising economic power in the region. Its diverse economy mainly includes textile exports, car manufacturing, agriculture and now a surge in tourism. Silk was a big business in Bursa when it was part of the Ottoman Empire and the last stop on the lucrative Silk Road. Head to Bursa’s biggest bazaar, Kapali Carsi, in the Koza Hani or “Silk Cocoon Hall” for some silk scarves. It was not long ago that silkworms would be raised by farmers and fed mulberry leaves, before their valuable silk cocoons would be sold in this market. What about today?

Green Bursa makes its presence felt through its historic riches

Bursa, the first capital of the Ottoman Empire with a history dating back to centuries at the heart of the silk and spice trade and Turkey’s fourth largest city. The city, which has been the capital of many civilizations for centuries, is the hub of many monuments and historical works nowadays. The city’s skyline is comprised of historical landmarks varying from mosques, madrasas and baths. Attracting attention for its natural beauty as well as its rich cultural heritage Bursa is also a much preferred holiday resort for winter sports. Uludag Mountain in Bursa is frequented by both winter and outdoor sports enthusiasts. Well-known for its large shopping centers, bazaars and museums Bursa has a temperate climate. The region is cool in the summer and mild in the winter. The first impression of the city might be that of a large, concrete-ridden modern metropolis that is betraying its largely recognized Turkish epithet of Yeşil Bursa (“Green Bursa”), and its historical prominency as being the cradle of the Ottoman state; however, upon a closer look you will see it really lives up to its name, by proudly displaying its Ottoman heritage in the shape of many mosques, tombs, and lovely quarters of old houses, as well as by harboring many pleasant parks, which fill the city with fresh air, and provide the weary traveller some shade to rest in—and even if you haven’t found the parks sufficient enough to have this city earned the honorific of “green”, then the lush woodlands of Uludag Mountain is just above that steep hill. Who wouldn’t like to sightsee a scenic city that harbors a variety of landmarks of different cultures? In 2014, Bursa and a nearby village of Cumalikizik were added to the UNESCO world heritage list. The remains at several sites illustrate the urban and rural system establishing the Ottoman Empire in the early 14th century.
