CARE IN THE COMMUNITY
Supporting mental ill-health A NEW campaign was launched this week by the Brentwood Community Tree Partnership to highlight their mental health services and support. Initiated by Audrey Clark director of Brentwood Community Print (BCP), a nonfor-profit Community Interest Company, members of the Brentwood Community Tree Partnership (a forum of local organisations who are working together to improve access to mental health services and support), have created a leaflet entitled ‘Who can I turn to?’ detailing local services and information on how to contact them, with the aim of preventing a mental ill-health crisis.
Audrey explains: The leaflet was designed and printed by the highly skilled and talented team at Brentwood
Community Print who understand the many problems associated with mental ill-health, including social isolation
and the difficulties associated with researching appropriate support. We believe that this leaflet will help towards transforming the lives of people in recovery from mental illness living in Brentwood and that of their families.” The leaflet has been funded through Brentwood Borough Council’s Community Fund and the scheme is supported by the Rotary Club of Brentwood a Becket, who kindly donated funds towards design costs. With the support from Tom Abell, Chief Officer of Brentwood and Basildon CCG, the leaflets will be distributed along with posters to all GP surgeries in the Brentwood area as well as Brentwood Borough Councillors, the library and other public places, in order to reach as many people as possible. For more details on BCP see our Focus On feature page 29.

Unique project to help improve the quality of people’s lives
R
ESIDENTS from four care homes in northEssex including Cheviot Nursing Home and Scarlett’s Care Home, Colchester, Well House in Brightlingsea and Sea Breeze Residential Care Home, Clacton, took part in a series of workshops in December and earlier this month in preparation for a classical concert with a difference, which took place last Saturday January 24, at Colchester Arts Centre in Church Street. The workshops encouraged participants to explore their own creativity through music and allowed them to compose and perform songs with a live orchestra. On Saturday, the care home residents were thrust into the limelight when they performed alongside a team of musicians from professional orchestra Sinfonia Viva who also performed works by
Mozart, Bach and Aaron Copland. The innovative orchestral project ‘Essex Folk’ led by composer Sam Glazer, accompanied by Sinfonia Viva and supported by Essex County Council’s Cultural Development and Quality Improvement teams and Orchestras Live, has enabled the elderly to engage with music and be really creative. Councillor Dick Madden, Essex County Council’s Cabinet Member for Adults said: “This is an excellent project which has contributed to the ongoing arts work with older people in Essex.” It is hoped the unique project will provide a lasting legacy at the care homes and encourage them to continue using the music techniques with the residents and staff to improve the quality of people’s lives.

Lifeboat rescue crews vital to Essex coast
to Save up *
LAST year was a busy time for the Lifeboat crews around the coast of Essex according to figures released this week by the Royal National Lifeboat Institute (RNLI). Crew from the six lifeboat stations on the coast; Harwich, Walton & Frinton, Clacton-onSea, West Mersea, Burnhamon-Crouch and Southendon-Sea, launched 378 rescue missions last year with incidents such as commercial vessels in trouble, distressed fishermen, swimmers and leisure marine users. Overall a total of 408 people were rescued with five of those classed as ‘lives saved’ - a specific RNLI criteria where a person would most likely have died if not for the RNLI rescuing them. The annual lifeboat launch figures also reveal that more than a quarter of the lifeboat launches in Essex were after nightfall. The busiest lifeboat station in the county was Southend-on-Sea which rescued 104 people, and launched 116 times in 2014. One rescue by the RNLI hovercraft crew was that of two girls who were stuck on the mudflats at Leigh in September when thick-fog came in. Gareth Morrison, RNLI Lifesaving Delivery

They are the lifeblood of the RNLI given the commitment they make” - downing tools and dropping everything to respond to a call for help day or night, come rain or shine. “Our message is that we will always launch to assist people in distress but we are also increasingly encouraging people to be mindful of the potential dangers associated with the sea.” The lifeboat launch statistics show once again how vital the RNLI is, highlighting the need for donations and contributions from the public. Books Top reasons to read
Nothing can be better than switching off from ‘real life’ and embarking on another person’s adventure. Reading is not only fun, but can also help develop your life skills, reduce stress and improve your imagination.
B
RENTWOOD’s brilliant Chicken & Frog bookshop is the perfect place if you love to read. Owner Natasha Radford who runs the shop with husband Jim, is a brilliant mind when it comes to anything about books. So it made perfect sense for Made in Essex to get her take on why reading matters…. It’s cold isn’t it? Not just a little chilly, but absolutely freezing. As a child I remember grumbling about it being too cold or wet to go outside, but now I welcome the season. Why? Because it gives me the perfect excuse to curl up on the sofa with a book. I could wrap up warm and march off for a bracing walk, but I’d rather indulge in stolen moments inside the pages of a new (or well loved) book. At this time of the year there’s plenty of advertising encouraging a ‘new you’, getting fit and healthy for the year ahead. Physical fitness is of course, very important, but what about exercising your mind? There have been a great many scientific studies on the health benefits of the book.
Here are just a few to get you reading. Reading can de-stress you. Research carried out at the University of Sussex showed that reading was the most effective way to overcome stress. It took the study participants just six minutes to relax once they started turning pages. In turn, it can also help you sleep better, as you become more relaxed before visiting the Land of Nod. Reading might just help keep your brain active when you reach old age, according to research published in the online issue of the journal Neurology. The study found that those who engaged in mentally stimulating activities (such as reading) earlier and later on in life experienced slower memory decline compared to those who didn’t. In particular, people who exercised their minds later in life had a 32 percent lower rate of mental decline compared to their peers with average mental activity. In our increasingly ageing population, studies such as these are more pertinent than ever.
Knowledge! Everything you read fills your head with new information, and you never know when you may need it from a local quiz, to a job interview or simply to improve the quality of your conversation. The more knowledge you have, the better-equipped you are to tackle any challenge you’ll ever face. Teachers are always telling their students to read and parents to read or listen to their children. They’re doing it just for the sake of it. If you read, your vocabulary will become so much more developed. As a ‘retired’ primary school teacher, I could usually tell within moments if a child had a life filled with books or not. Contrary to popular belief, the books we read do not all need to be high brow. The key is finding something that sparks your interest. And guess what, if you read, your writing will improve. It’s a fact. I’m not suggesting that every great reader will be capable of producing a bestseller, but there is no doubt that it h elps greatly. Those that read regularly have more attuned analytical and critical thinking skills. Readers can analyse a plot, understand how or why a character behaves in a certain way...and often readers are more empathetic too. They have experienced a range of personalities that they may not necessarily meet in ‘real life’, so it makes sense that they may be able to understand others in a way that nonreaders can’t. Reading improves concentration and focus. In
a single five-minute span, the average person will divide their time between working on a task, checking email, chatting with a couple of people, keeping an eye on social media, monitoring their phone, and interacting with co-workers.
These behaviours cause stress levels to rise and we don’t want that! When you read a book, all of your attention is focused on the story, the rest of the world just falls away, and you can immerse yourself in every fine detail you’re absorbing.
We are exceptionally lucky in Brentwood to have two fantastic libraries on our doorsteps, as well as bookshops. So, what are you waiting for? Find a book today and get reading.

1. GASP AT THE VIEWS FROM THE TALLEST BUILDING IN NEW YORK One World Observatory, New York City, USA . Open: Spring 2015 One of the most anticipated openings of 2015 is the launch of the observation deck at the mighty One World Trade Center. When the steel spire was added to the building on May 10, 2013, the skyscraper reached its final defiant height of 1,776ft; a measure that pointedly makes reference to the year the United States Declaration of Independence was signed.
It is now the tallest building in the western hemisphere (think six Statues of Liberty stacked end to end). As one official said, the viewing area promises to be the ‘Yankee Stadium’ of observation decks, with an immersive experience that starts in the lobby at ground level. Here visitors will learn about the history of the construction of the building before being whisked 102 storeys up in high-speed glass elevators. Then, at 1,250ft plucky viewers will be able to enjoy three floors of dining, shopping space and, of course, floor-to-ceiling eye-stinging panoramas of Manhattan and beyond. Virgin Atlantic (0844 557 4321/virgin-atlantic.com) offers three nights in New York with return flights from £779 (in May).

Perhaps the font of all knowledge when it comes to travel is Lonely Planet. The largest travel guide book publisher in the world advises on the best sights, most affordable places to stay, and other useful tips in their huge collection of guides now also available online as eBooks.
Credit: Cape Canopy Tour
‘NEW IN TRAVEL’ is Lonely Planet’s brand new free eBook which gives the lowdown on the most incredible new attractions recently opened or due to open this year, around the world from exhilarating zip lining adventures in South Africa, exploring the inside of an Icelandic ice cap, to fascinating galleries, museums and breweries not to be missed. So, if you want more from your holiday than being static on a sun lounger, or exploring the same old sights, this guide will more than inspire you to try something different.
Cape Canopy Tour zip-line tour enables you to fly like a fish eagle, one of the many bird species found among the reserve’s rocky mountains, through bright wildflowers and serene pools. A 4WD takes participants high into the mountains, where a series of steel cables up to 320m long lead between 13 platforms. Zipping past waterfalls and through valleys, you venture deep into a previously inaccessible and pristine area of this World Heritage Site. Guides come along to check those zip-line harnesses are securely attached and to add some interesting facts
2. WHIZZ THROUGH THE SOUTH AFRICAN WILDERNESS Cape Canopy Tour, Elgin, Western Cape, South Africa Opened August 2014 The Cape Canopy Tour offers an exciting aerial perspective on the rugged wilderness of the 70,000-hectare Hottentots Holland Nature Reserve. The four-hour
about the surrounding nature and geology of the vertigo-tinged fun. The new tour is located off the R321 between the towns of Grabouw and Villiersdorp, just over an hours drive (80km) east of Cape Town. British Airways (0844 493 0787/ba.com) offers return flights to Cape Town from £709 (in February). 3. A HISTORIC BREWERY: the Smithwick’s Experience, Kilkenny, Ireland. Opened July 2014 Ireland’s oldest beer is celebrated at this brand-new visitor attraction
that recreates the birth of this famous brew with a multimedia tour. Commencing at the site of the Abbey of St Francis, a combination of holograms and Franciscan monks (played by actors) recreate the medieval origins of the brewing process. The story continues with the arrival of John Smithwick in the 1700s and is told via living portraits of key family members who recount the story of a brewery that grew from humble origins to a worldwide brand. Visitors will have the opportunity to experience every aspect of the brewing

important and the key to youthful radiant skin. It removes dull, dead skin cells and allows deeper penetration of other products and treatments. You should exfoliate your skin with a scrub at least twice week. There are advanced exfoliation treatments like microdermabrasion and skin peels, great for acne, sun damage, anti-ageing, fine lines and wrinkles and for normal skin that needs a boost. Hydrating the skin is also a very important step in your skincare routine. Dehydrated skin can lead to fine lines. Dry and dehydrated skin needs more attention but it is vital for all skin types to hydrate their skin daily with a good

moisturiser. The skin must also be kept well hydrated internally by drinking plenty of water. Skin protection I think is the most important step in protecting your skin against environmental damage. Environmental damage/free radicals account for 90% of skin ageing including wrinkles, roughness, pigmentation and loss of elasticity. These free radicals include UV light, smoking, environment and pollution, which damage or destroy cell membranes, skin lipids, cell DNA, collagen and elastin. UVA is more efficient than UVB and triggers reactions that damage skin resulting in premature skin ageing and even skin cancer.
•
Many techniques are available to repair skin damage but daily maintenance is needed to help skin look good. A daily UVA and UVB protection is recommended to prevent skin damage and to protect the skin. Antioxidants play a very important part in the protection of skin. Without them our skin would age quicker. Antioxidants have been scientifically proven to delay the onset of ageing by reducing free radical activity. They neutralise harmful free radicals, therefore prevent skin damage and keep the skin younger for longer. A skin care programme without antioxidants is only half a skin programme!

Opened October 2014 After a massive renovation and amid plenty of controversy, one of Paris’ most well loved museums opened its doors again in late October 2014, on the anniversary of Pablo Picasso’s birth. The Musee Picasso holds the worlds biggest collection of works by the master, and is housed in the beautiful mid-17th-century Hotel Sale in the Marais district. The impressive collection is composed of 5,000 works including paintings and sculptures. The costly five-year renovation has provided a lot more space for displaying artworks, as well as allowing an increase in the number of visitors who can be in the museum at one time. Eurostar (0843 218 6186/eurostar. com) offers return travel to Paris from £69.
BOOST & BRIGHTEN YOUR SKIN WITH VITAMIN C A lot of celebrities are using Vitamin C topically as well as taking orally to erase signs of ageing including fine lines and wrinkles. Vitamin C is a great supplement to take to benefit the body and immune system internally, however only 2-3% of the Vitamin will actually reach your skin, which is why it is important to use it topically as well. Vitamin C is a powerful ‘hero’ ingredient and is available as a serum to ‘boost’ your existing skincare regime. It is a favourite of mine and an important step in my daily skincare regime. It boosts collagen production, repairs existing sun damage and improves the appearance of fine lines
5. TEMPT YOUR SWEET TOOTH AT THE BELGIUM CHOCOLATE VILLAGE Belgian Chocolate Village, Brussels, Belgium Opened September 2014 For a country synonymous with chocolate, it’s a no brainer that Belgium should have its very own chocolate village, and now it does. Located on the preserved site of the 19th-century Victoria chocolate factory in Brussels, the Belgian Chocolate Village is one of the largest museums in Europe dedicated to the sweet stuff. Displays help to explain the stages of chocolate manufacture as well as the various uses and benefits, while a tropical greenhouse replicates the conditions where the cocoa trees are grown. But chocolate addicts will want to make a beeline straight to the workshop where chocolatiers perform demonstrations and visitors can take a stab at making their own praline in the chocolate classes. And yes, there is a tasting room. Eurostar (as above) offers return travel to Brussels from £69. 6. Cutting the red ribbon will be a pivotal moment for Singapore, which has invested millions, especially during the past several years in positioning itself as a global art city, from the launch of major new calendar events such as Art Stage Singapore, the annual art fair in 2011 to the redevelopment of former army base Gillman Barracks as a contemporary art centre (now housing 16 international galleries) in 2012. Health & Wellbeing Ockenden Manor
Spas often have a reputation for being all about massages, facials and pedicures, but many of them are priceless resources filled with knowledge and opportunities to address health concerns and imbalances with specialised treatments. Bonnie Friend, Editor at Spabreaks. com suggests a few favourites. Grayshott Hotel and Spa for Cranial Osteopathy Headley Road, Grayshott, Hindhead, Surrey GU26 6JJ Gentle enough to treat babies, Cranial Osteopathy can be used to detect imbalances in the body or to treat a cacophony of problems from a fear of giving birth to chronic fatigue. Sessions at Grayshott are usually around 45 minutes, and unsurprisingly it takes the principles of osteopathy but focuses on the head. To explain quite how gentle it’s supposed to be, Grayshott’s spa manager Elaine Williams says that it should almost feel like butterfly wings across the face. Ockenden Manor for Chakra Wellbeing Ockenden Lane, Cuckfield, Haywards Heath, West Sussex RH17 5LD This is a bit like yoga but in treatment form, and is used to help soothe fatigue, insomnia and headaches. Five spa treatments you have to try….. shirodhara treatment, which sees warm oil poured in a steady stream onto the ‘third eye’. It sounds strange but is incredibly hypnotic, helping to clear the mind and encourage relaxation. In this instance it also includes a spot of reflexology and a foot scrub, which adds another layer of luxury to the experience – fitting for what is generally a very beautiful spa in which to spend time. Kenwick Park for Colour Therapy Kenwick Health & Beauty Centre, Kenwick Park, Louth, Lincolnshire LN11 8NR When I first heard about this I have to be honest I thought we were really entering into the realms of the ridiculous, but colour therapy operates in much the same way as aromatherapy and is a really beautiful experience. Whereas in aromatherapy you are usually asked to pick an essential oil based on the smell, in this instance you choose it based on the colours that you are drawn to. The belief is that the chosen colours say something about you and what you need from the treatment. Following that it is used as part of a massage. All the colours are linked to a Tarot card and are intended to work on a spiritual, emotional, and mental level depending on how or where they are applied. There is an element of buy-in that goes with a treatment like this, but ultimately it is about feel-good factor. It’s relaxing, interesting, and entertaining, and if you ask me, the most important part is that it’s guaranteed to make you smile.
Gleneagles for Naturopathy Auchterarder, Perthshire PH3 1NF Not so much a treatment as a lifestyle practice designed to work with the body on general wellbeing as well as targeting specific ailments, I was first properly introduced to naturopathy by Louise Westra at Gleneagles. Lifehouse Spa and Hotel for Food Intolerance Testing Frinton Road, Thorpe-le-Soken, Essex CO16 0JD I probably don’t really need to explain to you what a food intolerance test is, but however popular they are (don’t we all have an intolerance to something now?) it’s not always easy to know where to go to be tested. That, and most places are not as nice as Lifehouse – where they also offer the test for couples in a special two-hour consultation. The important thing to remember is that this is about intolerances, not allergies, so symptoms that you might be having are likely to be unpleasant but won’t be life threatening. his first property in 1983 in cash (earned from street trading), in a Home Counties town. Within four years, property prices had increased by 63% (1983-87) and he sold it and bought a new main residence and two buy-tolets. He then moved out of the main residence and rented a tiny flat for himself, his then partner and their daughter. He let the main property out as bedsits. A tough call, but it suited the market at that time. You will recall that, between 1989 and 1993, property prices fell off a cliff and interest rates

shot up, but by 1996, prices were recovering. Billy then re-mortgaged all three properties and bought two more. In 1998, he married and his wife sold her house. With the proceeds, they bought three more properties. His brother then joined the party and they bought a further three
‘overnight’ property success – as easy as it sounds? can you make a lot of money quickly with a property portfolio, asks finance expert Lawrence Watts • After 1997 (when I got involved), he only rented to professionals. • Up until 2008, when interest rates fell, he made very little income from the portfolio. In other words, on a £5.25m portfolio, with £3m in mortgages, with rents of £189,000 and interest of £150,000 (at 5%), gross profit was £49,000 but, over the 22 years, capital appreciation is say £2m. The portfolio is now worth £6m. • For the record, one of the properties he bought in 2007 is still below the purchase price now.

properties (all on a shared basis). 2008 – 2012 His wife managed the redecoration and maintenance of the properties. Between 1998 and 2001, property prices rose by some 50% and he re-mortgaged the whole portfolio (well, in fact, I did) and bought another five properties and we repeated the operation in 2006 (by then, property prices were up by 70%, approximately). His property portfolio was 21 homes. The yield at that time was circa 7.5%, but interest rates were 6.5% on average. Right now, interest rates are at an all-time low – profits are flattered and frankly exceptional. Capital appreciation is back.
some points you should know: • Billy managed all the properties himself and saved, say, 10% per annum in agent charges. Up until very recently, he undertook all maintenance work himself. • He worked full-time as a healthcare worker – this is a “switched-on” guy with ambition and guts (and a vision). • He invested every penny of profits back into his properties.
• In the first 25 years, he rarely could afford to go on holiday. Remember, unless you sell to release capital, the margin between income and mortgage interest costs is not necessarily that high. • He is also resilient and tough. He did use solicitors as and when tenants couldn’t (or wouldn’t) pay. He could and would face up to difficult tenants. He also maintained his properties to high standards. I guess he married well! • He also bought in the best streets, in the best part of town. It may reduce initial yield, but it maintains yield (better tenants) and, in the long run, produces higher capital appreciation. I also believe that, once the ‘London effect’ is over and investors look further afield, his part of suburbia will do very well. I mention this, because I think that is where growth will happen next. The key point of this story is that Billy managed his outgoings by using his job to pay for day-to-day living costs and reinvested
his rents to improve the fabric of his business (literally). In fact, he invested and was willing to be patient before reaping the benefits of his investments. My view on his portfolio is that it’s time to move on. IHT (inheritance tax) alone would be circa £1m and at age 63, there needs to be an end game. In other words, sell. So, what can we take from Billy’s experience: • Investing in property is a business. Do your research as to where best yields can be obtained and best possible capital growth – look beyond your locality. • Consider it as a long game. • Prepare for much higher interest rates (oh, by the by, you could consider borrowing against your main residence, since rates will be lower – but do you have the nerve? Also, make sure you tell your lender why). • Sit down and work out your return, after all income and costs. Repeat the exercise on a regular basis and manage both sides of the accounts. • Hone your skills – do a decorating/joinery/ bookkeeping course. It will save you money, unless your marginal earnings and time are of higher value than the cost of a tradesperson. • Sell, if you see better opportunities elsewhere – why don’t landlords do more of that? • Look to build partnerships with friends and family – but do choose carefully. • Plan your exit. • Remember that having ten properties can actually be less risky than a couple – but reinvest profits to bring down mortgage borrowing as quickly as possible. • Don’t be put off by the naysayers. There is lots of evidence that investors buy at the top and sell at the bottom, for various reasons. Property is illiquid, compared with shares, but consider price movement over the past year. Hunt for likely value! Finally – take independent advice. And talk to your spouse – believe me, it’s a joint effort. Lawrence Watts is a chartered financial planner with HBB. rom Monday 26 January, househunters may start to find a new
name turning up on their online property search results. OnTheMarket.com is a brand new property portal that has been set up by estate agents, under a partnership known as Agents Mutual, to challenge the ‘duopoly’ of Rightmove and Zoopla as well as a host of smaller, privately owned websites such as Whathouse.com. Many of its features will be familiar to anyone who has used other portals, with simple search criteria for property for sales or rent and information on past sale prices. At present, there is not a mobile app version of the website and only a very limited amount of consumer content, such as buying and letting advice. Launching its new marketing campaign, including press and television adverts, Ian Springett, chief executive of OnTheMarket.com, says: “We are proud to present OnTheMarket.com as a much-needed competitor in the online property search market. We have launched an outstanding website using the latest technologies which presents properties in the best possible light for consumers and avoids unnecessary clutter.” At the time of launch, some 4,600 estate agent offices around the UK had signed up to the new site, close to the company’s stated target of 5,000. Its members are a mix of national household names and local agencies including Chestertons, Douglas & Gordon, haart, Hilbery Chaplin, The Home Partnership, Kinleigh Folkard & Hayward, Knight Frank, Savills, Spicerhaart and Strutt & Parker. It is estimated that over 250,000 properties will be listed on the site from launch (compared to Rightmove’s stated inventory of 800,000 properties for sale and 300,000 homes for rent) The big news for consumers – and the issue that has been the most talked-about in the estate agency industry over the past few months – is that agents signed up to OnTheMarket are only allowed to list on one other website. OnTheMarket has made no secret of its ambition to get to the number two position in the market at the expense of Zoopla. Until now, many member companies will have listed their clients’ properties on both the major portals, as well as a number of other websites, but have had to choose which single website to choose. OnTheMarket members are free to choose which one, but it seems the majority have decided to stay with Rightmove, the longest-established UK property portal and, indeed, one of the most visited websites in this country. “Zoopla...has taken the biggest hammering so far, losing a significant number of property listings in a very short space of time,” says independent property journalist Marc Da Silva. “But will the average house-hunter searching for property online notice that Zoopla has lost a large chunk of its stock in their area? Probably not. People are generally brand-loyal and trust Rightmove and Zoopla to simply have all the properties available, as people assume that agents list on both websites.” Some have questioned whether being forced to give up listing on all but one established property portal is actually in the best interest of vendors, who may be unaware that the agent they have engaged has had to withdraw their property from listings on websites which attract many thousands of house-hunters every day. Would you, as a seller, be happy to engage an agent which is contractually obliged to list your property on just one other website, rather than, potentially, dozens? The new portal has also closed its doors to the online estate agency market. It restricts membership to “traditional” estate agents with a High Street presence, a decision which has also provoked a strong reaction from within some the online industry. The growing number of online-only agents, such as Emoov, Hatched and Tepilo, offer their services at a flat fee considerably lower than traditional agents’ charges. Adam Day, managing director of online agent Hatched. com, sent an open letter to the National Association of Estate
new portal aims to shake up property search estate agent group creates a new website to challenge established portals Keith Osborne reports. Ian Springett, chief executive of OnTheMarket.com
Agents (NAEA) resigning from the organisation due to what he refers to as a “conflict of interest”. The NAEA takes membership fees from online agents (Day prefers the term ‘hybrid agent’) yet also supports OnTheMarket, which has excluded a number of its members. Some observers have questioned that even with an initial marketing budget of an estimated £6million, the new portal may not have the financial firepower to compete with the established names. Agents who have signed up to OnTheMarket, however, believe that it will soon establish itself as a contender and find favour with the nation’s house-hunters.
Michael Fiddes, head of agency at Strutt & Parker, remarks: “OnTheMarket.com offers something new and exciting – and anything that offers consumers more choice and flexibility has got to be a good thing. The lay-out is fresh, clean and uncluttered – without lots of confusing and surplus information and distracting third party adverts. It does what it says on the tin, allowing property hunters to find the home of their dreams more easily.” Paul Jarman, head of western region residential at Savills, adds: “We believe that OnTheMarket.com will soon become the only portal where consumers are able to search for all the properties from the country’s leading agents.” Only time will really tell whether consumers will take to OnTheMarket. More competition in the market should benefit them inasmuch as it will force every portal to up its game to maximise its appeal to companies and individuals listing on them. Sellers will have to be satisfied that their property is getting the maximum exposure possible for the fee they are being charged by their agent, while buyers will have to be able to find the listings online and, eventually, adopt the brand in the way that they have for Rightmove and Zoopla, who have a huge head-start over the ‘new kid on the block’. “Once the dust has settled and assuming OnTheMarket delivers quality leads, I believe that it will replace Zoopla as the UK’s second largest property portal, but challenging Rightmove for the number one spot will be a much tougher task,” says Da Silva. It is the elusive mix of sufficient inventory and competitive online popularity that will decide OnTheMarket’s fate in the long term.

The themes that came out of the session point to a company that treats its staff well in every area including motivation, development, career progression and pay. Staff enjoy the fact that the company has a contemporary feel, but where traditional values thrive. They work in a team-spirited environment where enthusiasm, a sense of fun and good-humour are prized, and where there is a passion for ethical standards, proactivity, innovation, and technology. The personal accountability of every staff member to the customer also featured very highly, as did our strong “shared responsibility” approach and the ability to respond quickly to changing market conditions.

Perfect pitstop
From freshly brewed coffee to Smoothies and a fabulous range of light snacks or your Full English Breakfast, Caffe Essex is a great refueling stop. Situated at 23 Ongar Road, just off Brentwood High Street the cafe run by Andy and Sue has been open since September 2013.
I
T HAS had its fair share of star turns too, appearing several times on the hit reality TV show The Only Way Is Essex and received plenty of mentions on BBC Essex radio and Brentwood’s local station Phoenix FM. Andy explains: “We originally set up a juice bar at a well known sports centre in 2008, then expanded the business to a Caffe/juice Bar. We built up a good customer base, with on site cooked food offering excellent service to regular users of the centre and its staff. We decided to branch out, leaving the centre and go it alone, and in September
2013 launched what is now famously known as Caffe Essex. You’ll spot all ages enjoying the hospitality in the Caffe but Andy and Sue have just launched launched a student and local school discount card giving a whopping 20% off the menu. “Overall a unique experience awaits everyone,” says Andy, “so why not pop in to say Hi, pick up our menu, grab a takeout or dine in for that Caffe Essex ambience.” Andy and Sue have put together two of their Winter Warmer recipes for Made in Essex readers, guaranteed to perk you up for those long winter evenings.

Lynn secures GP2 drive with eyes set on Formula One RACING driver Alex Lynn will step up to the GP2 Series for 2015 following confirmation that he will join the DAMS team for the upcoming season. Lynn, from Aythorpe Roding, is one of the sport’s most promising young drivers and underlined his potential by capturing the GP3 title at his first attempt in 2014. The 21-year-old is is hoping for a quick transition into life as a GP2 driver with hopes of claiming a Formula One seat in the future. After a test drive with Lotus last November, Lynn admitted it only made him want a seat in Formula One more. “Personally all I want to do is show what I’m
capable of and try to get myself a Formula One seat. That’s where it’s at for me really, if you can prove yourself to the right people and get a Formula One seat then that’s the dream,” said Lynn. Three of the last four GP2 champions have represented DAMS and, despite racing in his inaugural season with the team, Lynn is hoping to emulate their recent success. “I am delighted to be racing with DAMS in 2015. Their record in the last few years speaks for itself and there’s nowhere else I wanted to be in GP2 – it’s a fantastic opportunity for me and I’d like to thank them for giving me this break,’’ added Lynn.

“My aim is to fight for the championship. It’s a long time since anybody won GP2 in their first year, but if we can get off to a solid start there’s no reason why we shouldn’t be able to fight for wins and podiums straight away. “GP2 is an extremely difficult category to win, especially in your first year competing in it, but that’s exactly what I plan to do so preparation is key in times like this, so we’ve got to make sure we make the most of it. “The car’s really impressive, it’s pretty much like a Formula One car really.’’ The 2015 GP2 Series begins in Bahrain in April. There are eight rounds in total, all supporting Formula One grands prix.

Brentwood come back from two goal deficit to snatch late victory
B
RENTWOOD Town scored twice in the final ten minutes as they came from 2-0 down to beat Cray Wanderers 3-2 at Hayes Lane. Adrian Stone and Moses Ashikodi put Cray 2-0 up inside half an hour, but Tom Richardson halved their lead with a goal just before half-time. Richardson struck again in the 82nd minute to get Brentwood back on level terms before Sherwin Stanley completed the comeback with a cool finish three minutes from time, ensuring the Blues hold onto fourth position in Ryman Division One North. Joint-boss Adam Flanagan named an unchanged side and his team looked the stronger of the two in the opening minutes with both Sam Bantick and Richardson testing Lewis Moore in the Cray net. Once Cray settled they created chances of their own. An expert block by Brentwood skipper Martyn Stokes denied Warren Whitely, but with 21 minutes on the clock the hosts made the breakthrough. Brentwood failed to clear their lines and Stone benefitted, pouncing on a loose ball just outside the six-yard box to beat goalkeeper Ollie Bowles at the near post. Virtually straight from the restart Stanley struck the post for Brentwood, but Cray were next to score, extending their lead in the 29th minute. Once again the Blues were unable to deal with a cross into the box allowing Ashikodi to poke the ball into the net from close range. The second goal sparked Brentwood into life, though, and in the 43rd minute Richardson halved the deficit. Robbie Rees cut the ball back to the edge of the box and Richardson burst through to fire low past Moore.

Brentwood heaped pressure on Tommy Warrilow’s side in the final minutes of the half, but Cray held onto their lead thanks to a couple of excellent saves by Moore. The Blues continued looked dangerous after the break with Bantick threatening on the wing, but they remained vulnerable at the back and Ashikodi almost profited, darting into the box and beating Bowles, only to drag his shot wide with the goal gaping. Brentwood had Cray firmly under the cosh, however, and in the 82nd minute they were rewarded for their persistent pressure. The Blues caught the hosts with a quick
free kick and Stanley squared the ball to Richardson who drilled home from eight yards. The Essex side completed the comeback five minutes later when Bantick passed through for Stanley who calmly slotted the ball under Moore after a perfectly timed run. The points were not safe yet, though. The Wands created one last opportunity in stoppage time, but Ashikodi’s back-heeled effort missed the target. “It was pleasing to get the win and the last 60 or 70 minutes were better,” said Flanagan. “But if we want to continue to do well this season we can’t give teams a 2-0 lead or start like we did today.” Brentwood return to The Arena next weekend when they face AFC Sudbury. MARTIN VOLLER
Wilvale edge evenly-matched game HAVING met before, both teams knew they were evenly matched. Nathan W, Marcello and Jake B held firm at the back with Marcello putting various parts of his body on the line when called upon to do so. With both goalkeepers largely untested it was anyone’s game but the breakthrough came to the Jets. Jack was played in, shot on target, the ball bounced off the keeper and ended up at Shaun’s feet who scored. Shortly afterwards the Jets doubled their lead with Jake D but Wilvale fought back to

make it 2-1. At the other end Sophie had a shot on goal saved and Marcello’s long range effort almost bounced over the Wilvale keeper and in the final few seconds of the first half Wilvale came close to equalising. Ethan’s accurate throw found his man and Jack made sure that the Jets were leading by two goals. Jets mistake down one end resulted in the Rangers scoring their second and soon after Wilvale Rangers
came back and suddenly it was 3 – 3. Ben, clearly having taken some lessons from his hero Manuel Neuer and having miskicked a heavy ball in the first instance found himself out of his box kicking the ball long to the forward players Sophie, Daniel and Ethan trying to hold the ball so that Jack and Jake D would get opportunities on goal. Perhaps it was the sun that had suddenly burst into life and made seeing the ball difficult or whether it was that the Jets just switched off for a second but Wilvale took the lead.

Courtney Van Beest on the attack for Leopards
NEWCASTLE TREK PROVES POINTLESS
T
HE Big Cats came up just short in Newcastle on Saturday on a day when little went right for them leading to a second league loss of the season. They were tied at 65 with five minutes remaining and only 72-70 down with 2:17 on the clock but a couple of turnovers down the stretch proved costly for them. “Poor first and third quarter put us in a difficult position,” admitted assistant coach Roger Malpass who, along with veteran guard Ronnie Baker, coached the team in the absence of the unavailable Robert Youngblood. “Determined efforts from Albert Margai, Dave Ajumobi and Courtney Van Beest along with some excellent defence from Matic Zupanc in the second half enabled us to get back into it. “At 72-70 down poor decisions and two turnovers were compounded by fouls on the resulting plays cost us. Well, that the 12-26 foul count in their favour and the fact that they scored 29 points from 27 free-throws while we only had nine foul shots all night!” The Big Cats led 11-9 after five minutes but were outscored 17-5 in the rest of the period to trail 26-16 at the first break. They pulled to within six at the mid-point of the second period, and Ajumobi cut the deficit to 43-41 going into the locker room at half-time. A six minute third period drought helped the hosts take a 64-52 lead into the final period before they were held to just one point in five minutes to set up a tense finish which saw Team Northumbria win 82-73. Ajumobi again led the way for the Big Cats with 27 points, adding eight rebounds, three assists and three steals, while Van Beest had a 13-point, 11-rebound double-double. Captain

Margai finished with eight assists to go with his 11 points. n Leopards face a key game at Harlow Leisure Zone on Saturday evening as they host Kent Crusaders, tip-off 7.30pm. With the Big Cats having lost to Team Northumbria on Saturday, Crusaders now have the best percentage record in Division One, and a pair of home victories over the weekend has moved them up to third spot with an 8-1 record. Leopards remain second with nine wins from 11 games. Under former Leopards’ assistant coach Lloyd Gardner, the young Kent side have three former Big Cats – Bradley Wilkinson, Josh Steele and Duane Orija – who helped the club win the treble in 2012, and the game will be vital to both team’s title hopes. The teams met twice in the National Trophy group stage, with Crusaders’ initial 78-65 win being declared void to a sub-standard court but they repeated the success with an 84-70 victory in the replayed game. Tickets for Saturday’s game can be purchased on the night or through www.leopardsbasketball.co.uk

HOCKEY
Naven hat-trick helps secure win ON THE back of last week’s humbling defeat, Brentwood looked to reverse their fortunes and trekked up to last-placed St Ives, knowing that a win was vital in the battle to get out of the relegation zone. The game started at a high tempo, and despite having plenty of possession, Brentwood were unable to gain any sort of territory or penetration into the St Ives half, as the home side had a wellorganised high press which put pressure on the defence. Brentwood contested but were always a step behind, as St Ives grabbed the opener through a freak deflection off of keeper Ian Malone. Brentwood responded well, and turned the St Ives defence on the counter, with James Duggan feeding through to Steven Naven, who duly converted. Despite drawing level, St Ives were soon up again from a goalmouth scramble, as it began to look like the previous week for Brentwood, but they managed to hold out for the constant Ives pressure.
As the halftime whistle blew, St Ives were awarded a penalty corner, which they played out and stretched the lead further with a drag-flick, bringing the score to 3-1. It was a big task Brentwood faced coming into the second half, and they responded strongly. The St Ives defence grew tired, and allowed much more room for Brentwood to work with, and gave way to more composure on the ball. Brentwood played with much more confidence, which showed, as they had attack after attack, and long phases on the ball. It was well due, as they won a penalty corner and Steven Naven drag-flicked the ball into the back of the net. Brentwood were filled with energy, and believed that they had found the equaliser when Naven finished from a scrappy melee in front of the goal, but this was strangely downgraded to a short corner, which was met with cheers from the home support, as the ensuing shot was saved. Despite the set back, the

resurgent Brentwood never stopped, and claimed their reward, as after many close chances and near misses. Fine work from Naven down the byline fed through to a waiting James Duggan, who slapped home to draw level. Brentwood had the ascendancy and fate beckoned as the clock began to tick down. This was no matter as Steven Naven grabbed his third of the match from a fiery drag-flick to give Brentwood a deserved lead for the first time in the game. It should have been a simple task of closing out the game in the final minutes but following the theme of the day, Brentwood made nothing easy for themselves. They conceded a penalty-corner as the final whistle sounded, however a mis-trap at the top of the circle ended the game 4-3 in Brentwood’s favour. SIMON PARSONS
