ETWORK Rail has begun work for the Crossrail programme at both Brentwood and Shenfield
stations. At Brentwood, contractors will shortly set up its worksite in the station car park. Twenty parking spaces will be needed to accommodate equipment and work to extend the platforms will be carried out between now and July. At Shenfield, work has started in Friars Avenue car park, and saw engineers set up a small compound
to gain access to the embankment in readiness for tree removal work to create the new platform six. The clearance is expected to last around three weeks. Letters have already been sent to all the nearby properties and representatives from Network Rail have visited residents to make sure that they know about the works. To keep disruption to a minimum, the majority of the work will take place during week days. However, a small amount of
vegetation close to the overhead power lines can only be removed when trains are not running, so will be taken out over the weekend. Leader of Brentwood Borough Council, Councillor Barry Aspinell, said: “We have been working hard with the Crossrail Team to make sure that any inconvenience to local residents and traders is kept to an absolute bare minimum. “Although the Crossrail Act does mean we have a limited role, we have been very proactive at sharing our

local knowledge and experience with Crossrail and the other organisations involved to address key issues that concern our residents and businesses.” Matthew White, Surface Director at Crossrail said: “We will be taking all possible measures to make sure that any disruption will be kept to an absolute minimum during the works. ‘‘Crossrail will transform rail services for local people providing more frequent services and the ability to travel right through central London without having to change trains.”

Prince to give college Royal seal of approval
The Earl of Wessex, Prince Edward to open new South Essex College campus

SSEX will receive a Royal visitor on March 17 when the Earl of Wessex, Prince Edward officially opens the new £45 million Thurrock Campus in Grays. He will be given a tour of the purpose built campus which boasts state-of-the-art facilities including the Waves restaurant, run by college students, a shop, hairdressing salons, health centre and student advice centre, before unveiling a plaque. Already, more than 1,500 students have enrolled at the college which comprises two buildings located opposite the Civic Offices in New Road. Courses available include Applied Science and Technology, Media and Creative Arts, Art and Design, Logistics, Engineering and IT.
During his visit to Grays, the Prince will also meet Duke of Edinburgh Award participants at Thurrock Council Civic Offices. Next on his itinerary of Essex is an official visit to Stow Maries Aerodrome near Maldon to explore the new museum at Europe’s largest surviving First World War Aerodrome as well as the officers’ mess, before heading to Basildon to the New Holland tractor plant in Cranes Farm Road to mark its 50th anniversary. PERHAPS the most surprising winner of The Jump, Joey Essex has been crowned winner of the reality show. Beating off accomplished skiers including Heather Mills, Made in Chelsea star Louise Thompson, rugby star Mike Tindall and Olympian Louise Hazel, the former TOWIE-star battled it out in three gruelling winter sports - Ski Cross, The Air Jump and The Ski Jump in which he flew to victory with a 17.5m to win the coveted alpinethemed Cowbell Trophy. Before the series Joey had never ski’d before but he still managed to outshine his competitors on the slopes. On his experience Joey commented, “I thought it was going to be a nightmare, I didn’t think I was going to survive - growing up I found it hard to learn things but being on The Jump has proved I can.”

Authors inspire students to read more Students at Great Baddow High School welcomed Essex Book Award authors Catherine Bruton, Sara Crowe and Martyn Bedford all of whom have been shortlisted for an award this year, into their school to encourage students across the county to read more. The High School are strong supporters of the Essex Book Award and invited the guest
authors to talk to students from GBHS and other invited schools. Catherine Bruton author of ‘I predict a riot’ offered hints and tips on writing and encouraged students to look to their own experiences and to keep a diary. Martyn Bedford and Sara Crowe held activity workshops, discussions and quizzes about their latest
stories. The Essex Book Award is open to all secondary schools in Essex, Thurrock and Southend and it continues to attract schools around the county and this year is no exception. Protecting the hearts of Ingatestone and Blackmore A Co-operative Partnership joins forces with the East of England Ambulance Service
L
OCAL Mason branches in Ingatestone and Blackmore have joined forces with Chelmsford Star Co-operative Society and the East of England Ambulance Service to install external defibrillators in both Ingatestone and Blackmore. Brentwood MP Eric Pickles in Ingatestone and Brentwood Mayor, Vicky Davies in Blackmore showed their support at the official launches on Monday. 100,000 people die each year from sudden cardiac arrest - a condition that can affect people of all ages and fitness levels, in which the heart suddenly stops beating due to a malfunction in its electrical system. A significant amount of deaths however could be prevented with the use of a defibrillator - a life saving device, which can restore a normal heartbeat to a victim after a
cardiac arrest. The electrical pulse it emits to the heart restores it to a regular heartbeat, and allows the heart to return to pumping blood around the body. For every minute that passes without defibrillation chances of survival decrease by 7-10%. Vanessa Howard, Marketing and PR Manager for Chelmsford Star commented: “Inhabitants in rural villages are at a disadvantage because they are usually not that close to the emergency services, and when every second counts making a defibrillator readily available at any time within
both Ingatestone and Blackmore may just give someone a fighting chance.” The cost of two defibrillators has been met by local Mason branches and they are wall mounted on
the outside of the premises of Chelmsford Star Co-operative Society’s funeral branch in Ingatestone and in the car park of their convenience food store in Blackmore.

A RADIO station broadcasting on the internet is bringing new music to the people of Wickford. Sword Radio UK was the brainchild of Wickford residents Kevin Mann and Martin Shaw, who both had successful radio internet sites and decided to collaborate together. Martin was getting over 100 listeners a week with his Martin Shaw Dance and Charbusters show, while Kevin had Japanese Pop and New Artists show called The Spread. It was this love of Japanese music that gave Sword Radio UK and its tag line: “The Cutting Edge of Music.’’ Kevin said: “We both have a passion for

music and wanted to give new artists from the UK and especially new music from Japan and provide something different for our listeners that they wouldn’t get anywhere else.’’ At the moment they are fully legal and licensed and broadcasting from Kevin’s flat in Wickford, centred around the Nevendon Road area and the initial plan as well as music is to start covering local events and host special music nights and focus of promoting the best new musical talent especially from the local area of Wickford. “We are obviously hoping that a local business in Wickford or surrounding area would give us a home, so we can set up a permanent base with a proper full radio studio,’’ added Kevin. During the setting up of Sword Radio UK they met Kimberly Hunt-Dickson, who is head of Tishki Productions in California and a business relationship developed to the point where Kimberly became their manager for the United States, bringing with a wealth of experience in the radio and music business. Fourth member of the team is presenter Keith Essex who has developed his brand of Mellow Music on Monday’s slot and was hugely influential in the development of the stations sounds. LANS for a country park on the outskirts of Shenfield on land between Mountnessing roundabout and Hopefield Animal Sanctuary, could be the result of a development of land at Officers Meadow. It is all part of Brentwood Borough Council’s Local Development Plan (LDP), which is subject to public consultation until February 17. Sites must be found for 5,500 new homes to be built by 2030 and the council is asking for residents views on the matter. The country park plan is the idea of Leader of Brentwood Council, Councillor Barry Aspinell, who said: “It has long been an emotive subject that Officers Meadow has been identified for housing, but the loss of that land would mean Shenfield would lose that space as greenery. “If I can get adjoining landowners to contribute as well by purchasing through monies from this development, we could have a park for public open space, which could include structured recreational play, facilities for football, cricket and organised games but also hundreds of acres of public open space that can be enjoyed by our residents.� According to Cllr Aspinell, any such plan would see Shenfield High School’s playing field, which is opposite the school, become part of

A PETITION against homes on land used by Hopefield Animal Sanctuary in Sawyers Hall Lane has received an incredible response with more than 100,000 signatures of support including from singer and Hopefield patron Leona Lewis. The land has been put forward as a potential new plot for new homes in the borough. Hopefield has rented the land from Tesco since 1992 for a ‘peppercorn rent’, but
now the supermarket chain need to make ÂŁ250m cuts and are ‘‘reviewing their options.â€? The sanctuary is worried it could be forced to close. Chelmsford City Council up for prestigious award
Championsheeps onto a winner
CHELMSFORD City Council has been shortlisted for four 2015 Local Government Chronicle (LGC) Awards - the most attended, longest running and prestigious awards for local government. The four categories are: Council of the Year; Entrepreneurial Council of the Year; Driving Growth and Partnership of the Year. The LGC Awards are the most wellrespected accolades in local government, showcasing creativity, intelligence and determination within the sector. This year, the LGC received 633 entries from 222 organisations across 19 award categories. Leader of Chelmsford City Council, Councillor Roy Whitehead, said: “We do fantastic work here and to make the shortlist in the most competitive award category - Council of the Year - is a great recognition of that.” The awards take place on Wednesday March 11th at Grosvenor House Hotel in London.

It is a great way to connect with my fans. Every week I will bring you my recipe ideas including what I am cooking, my weekly style diary and my ‘Wear2Eat’guide, the ultimate fusion of food and fashion where I will diarise my look to suit a choice of restaurant and bar. There will also be exclusive celebrity video
chats and interviews. How did you get your inspiration for it? I absolutely love food. It’s a bit of a family thing. My parents always host dinner parties, most of our time at home is spent in the kitchen and I love cooking for friends. Charlie and I love food, we cook 5-6-course meals for each other. I think it’s so important to have a healthy attitude to food as well. As for fashion, I get asked a lot on twitter for fashion advice. In this blog I can share my style tips, show people what I’m wearing where the clothes are from how I put certain looks together. My blog let’s me be their fashion guinea pig. What is your favourite food or dish? My favourite food involves Asian flavours such as ginger, lemongrass and coconut – so I make a lot of clear soups and curries. Has Charlie given you any foodie tips? Charlie has been very supportive. As a deli owner he has given me some great tips and

OLLOWING hit tours in 2012 and 2014, Craig Gilbert’s acclaimed adaptation of Jerome K Jerome’s classic table of boating misadventure, Three Men in a Boat, docks at the Mercury Theatre next month. Produced by The Original Theatre Company and Theatre Royal Bury St Edmunds, the quintessentially British comedy will hold court at the Mercury from Monday March 23rd until Wednesday March 25th starring Tom Hackney, David Partridge and Michael Rouse. In an attempt to escape the stresses of city life, three friends J, Harris and George accompanied by their faithful canine companion Montmorency, decide to take to the river in order to relax and rejuvenate. The holiday, however, quickly unravels and descends into chaos. Originally intended as a guide to boating on the Thames, Jerome’s ripping yarn of youthful friendship, mischief and folly celebrates the very essence of Britishness. In Craig Gilbert’s production this classic tale of boating misadventure
comes complete with a working pub, live piano accompaniment, some ale, music hall singing, a dog and a lot of physical comedy. Make getting around easier IF you want to help improve the county’s bus and passenger transport network, ‘Getting around in Essex’ is a new bus strategy and consultation launched by Essex County Council. Members of the public can complete a questionnaire that will help the council and its partners review the service currently delivered across the county, to help shape it to benefit people who travel around and work in Essex. Buses still provide a vital link between communities and help the day-to-day running of the county’s businesses, education and health services. The consultation which focuses on eight areas including better information for customers and integrated and smart ticketing runs until March 31. Design students exhibit their work in High Chelmer shopping centre DESIGN postgraduates from Writtle College displayed their fascinating concepts entitled ‘A new vision for Chelmsford City Rivers: Design Proposals for a Resilient Urban Landscape’ which was run in consultation with Chelmsford City Council. Masters of Arts (MA) students in Landscape Architecture and Garden Design displayed their Urban Territory Studio projects in the High Chelmer from February 5th to 7th. Lecturer Dr Saruhan Mosler said: “Students developed individual designs for a site adjoining the Chelmer and Can rivers on the peninsula housing the Essex Record Office. UR Artist of the Month for February is the amazing singer-songwriter Leigh Luscious from Dagenham. Phoenix FM presenter Michelle Ward caught up with the energetic performer and Jedward super fan. Leigh Luscious is a singer songwriter small in stature but with twice the personality of most people and with three times the energy. She never stops, whether song writing, singing, designing her website, promotion, Twitter or writing books. Leigh has a unique sound. Her voice is soft and breathy and her songs are a mixture of emotions. Even if you don’t know Leigh’s songs at a gig she will soon have you singing along. She has been nominated for best acoustic act at this years Essex Entertainment Awards. Is Leigh Luscious your real name? Leigh Luscious is not my real
name. I said it once messing about when I was in a band just before I went onstage and it stuck. When did you first pick up the guitar? I first picked up the guitar at the age of about 16. I taught myself to play by reading books and just watching others. Your songs are renowned for being rather X-rated, has it always been that way? My songs haven’t always been X-rated, in fact I only wrote my first X-rated song about four years ago. I honestly don’t know how or why it started. Rockstar Rocket was my first explicit song and I didn’t plan to start writing that way, the words just came into my head. Who is your musical inspiration/inspirations? Eminem. I also love The Clash, Arctic Monkeys, The Libertines, Smokey Robinson and many others. You write songs, play guitar,

I guess writing is my hobby too, I like to write poems and writing down my thoughts and I’ve kept a diary since I was about 12. It sounds a bit weird but it’s really good fun as its given me opportunities to travel and to make lots of friends. What is your musical dream? To be able to work on my music full time. I want to keep improving and to do the best that I can, at what I do (singing, songwriting, entertaining). What’s so great about Essex? Essex is great because it is close to London, where you
need to be for business but it’s also in the countryside. There are some really beautiful and picturesque places. It is a mixture of both town and country, so we have it all. We’ve had a lot of famous people come from Essex, from singers, songwriters, performers, actors and footballers. I wouldn’t want to live anywhere else. When is your next gig? Musically different every time
N
ICK Field is Phoenix FM’s third longest serving presenter behind Chairman Paul Golder and former snooker champ-turned-prog rock DJ Steve Davis having helped launch the station in March 2007. Since he started his show “Curveballs” which specialises in promoting Nick Field unsigned bands from Essex, Nick has played out more than 200 live sessions. So how did it all begin? “I first heard of Phoenix in early 2006 when some of my friend’s bands were involved in their Creative Sessions,” Nick from Romford explains. “I saw on their website they had been awarded a fulltime licence and were looking to train people as presenters, so decided to apply. After a few training sessions and recording a podcast I was offered a slot on the schedule in early 2007.” Nick hadn’t done any radio presenting beforehand just some DJ-ing in local clubs. “It was actually a big help when it came to doing my first few shows, as I had some idea of what all the buttons on the sound desk did! I wouldn’t have had a clue otherwise,” he adds. His show Curveballs plays a mixture of
alternative rock to other styles such as electronica, hip-hop and metal. “In my teens I went through every musical phase possible - indie, dance, R&B, heavy metal, jazz, psychadelia - I just couldn’t stick to one thing! Most of the music I listen to now is guitar-orientated but I’m getting back into dance as well. Nick also features a lot of local acts on his show with a guest band in the studio most weeks. But it’s the bands he’s helped promote that make his time on Phoenix memorable. “I’ve interviewed those who have gone on to be featured heavily in cult magazines such as Kerrang! and Rock Sound, have played at festivals such as Download and appeared on Rock & Metal Music TV Station Scuzz.” Away from the studio Nick works as a Foundation Skills lecturer at Havering College and is also trying to break into the world of voiceovers too, but nearly 15 years after he first started on the station, the appeal of local radio shows no sign of abating. “We’re not afraid to innovate and try different things,” adds Nick. Romance – and we are proud to say it has gone from strength to strength. We can help plan amazing dates, anniversaries and wedding proposals. And I’m not talking “book you a restaurant” type of romance. Everything we plan is completely unique – romantic personalised picnics to rooms filled with rose petals and serenading singers. Literally nothing is off limits. So far we have arranged romantic events all over the world – I was personally flown Down Under to Sydney a few months ago to help arrange a marriage proposal and we have also notched up our air miles travelling to Ibiza, Switzerland, New York and even Mozambique to set up romantic events. We even boast a celebrity clientele which still makes us look at each other in shock when we talk about it. I never would have imaged we would be arranging romantic events for boy band members and A list actors. It’s a dream come true. When clients get in touch with us we either meet them fact to face or ask them to fill in a consultation form which asks lots of questions about their partner, their favourite memories, things they love and so on. Amanda and I then sit down and go though the form together before coming up with completely unique romantic ideas that are 100% tailored to the couple. So, if a form mentions that a girlfriend loves horses we will make sure horses are included in the idea! Let’s just say, no one will ever have had a romantic experience like this before – every little detail – from the colour of the rose petals to the type of music are personalised to the couple. And the best bit? We never arrange the same romantic experience twice – so if you want to propose to your partner in a unique way, then we will make sure your proposal has never been done before. People often presume as romance planners, we must cost a lot but this really isn’t the case. Although we refer to ourselves as a luxury company, the luxury element is actually in relation to the sorts of romantic experiences we arrange. Everything we do has a VIP service and is elegant and sophisticated. In terms of how much we charge, we decided we wanted to appeal to everyone so we work within client’s budgets. When they get in touch we ask them how much they would like to spend on their event and then we create two ideas that meet that

I’m often asked what is the most romantic/outrageous/opulent experience I have ever arranged. We helped with an incredible balletthemed proposal in America which I will always remember. The girl, a former professional ballet dancer was taken to the US by her boyfriend Edward as a surprise to watch her old ballet troupe perform The Nutcracker. After the performance the couple went backstage to congratulate the dancers but little did she know a whole new performance was about to take place. To her surprise, all the ballerinas started to dance around her and her boyfriend as her favourite song played and snow and glitter fell from the ceiling. The next thing she knew, the curtain has gone up and the theatre was
filled with her friends and family. It was at this point that Edward got down on one knee and proposed. We also helped plan an amazing first wedding anniversary surprise for a couple from India. We hired out a gorgeous room in a country estate and set up an indoor muslin tent, bedecked with fairy lights. There was an intimate picnic set out got the two of them and whilst they ate a pianist played a song that had been especially composed for them. As a first wedding anniversary gift is usually ‘paper’ we then had the composition of the song printed out and framed as a gift for the couple. We’ve also planned numerous first dates from fun and wacky to decadent
and romantic. One couple, both farmers, were due to go on a first date after meeting on a dating website. The guy contacted us and said he wanted something ‘fun’ to happen so, whilst they were walking through a field after a pub lunch, we arranged a farmers themed Flashmob. The Flashmob were all dressed in farmer attire and were dancing with pitch forks. It was great fun and it really broke the ice for the couple. And the best bit? They are still together. We’ve also planned very excessive first dates – one guy wanted to impress a girl so much that he hired out a private island for their first date. We then made sure the island had lots of romantic things for them to do – from sushi making classes to deep sea fishing. The day was topped off with a performance from dancers from the Moulin Rouge as it was her favourite film. This Valentine’s Day we will be busy helping one guy surprise his girlfriend with a sweet romantic gesture. They are coming to London for the day and going for a walk in Hyde Park. Along the walk she will be handed lots of gifts by strangers (all personalised to their relationship.) The final gift will be a note telling her to look at the bridge over the lake. As she looks up, there will be a whole group of us holing up umbrellas with the words “I love you: written on them. I’m sure lots of people are stressing about what to do/what to buy for their other halves. I’m the type who likes to do something unique and different (who really just wants to sit in a restaurant with other couples on Valentine’s Day?) which is why I love my job. “I’ve always had an interest in alternative learning,”

occasions and many people would label them as OTT but whenever I wear them to an event I always get tons of compliments. *Finally, remember that they are pre-loved items. I wash and repair every item that I stock at The Vault. Unfortunately there will be a little wear, especially with some of the pieces I have from the 50s and 60s.

Lauren has always been interesting in fashion and studied a Fashion Promotion as her degree course which focused on styling, journalism and Public Relations. This led to a career working in PR for the fashion industry.
For any vintage aficionado, The Vault is a treasure trove brimming with glorious items. It doesn’t just sell second hand stuff either. “The clothing is all handpicked,” adds Lauren. It’s from Paris and Italy and it’s half the price of Brick Lane.”
But what is Lauren’s favourite vintage piece? “I have a beautiful 1920s headpiece which is my absolute favourite item but I am also a big fan of vintage capes as they can be so versatile. Working in fashion you want to stand out from the crowd and for me wearing interesting individual vintage items was the way to do so. I love to mix and match it with the high street.” Lauren’s most recent work with the local colleges included completing a project where she set them a taste of creating a photo shoot for the boutique. “It was an amazing project to be part of and the young adults involved were so enthusiastic,” she says. “One even sited me as their inspiration in their personal statement when applying to university which was lovely to say the least. T’S not just Daniel’s passion for food that has got him as far as he has today, one of Essex’s most inventive chefs, he enjoys putting together creative dishes and, most recently, his job has been to put Greenwoods Hotel & Spa’s Sunday roast back on the menu! What is your first food memory? My mum’s Sunday lunch! When I was young we all used to sit together for a big family meal and, if I’m lucky enough to have a Sunday off, I still enjoy it now.

What is your biggest accomplishment? Cooking at the Olympics. It was such a great honour being part of the team and especially as an executive chef making choices. Just as stunning an achievement is my lovely wife Martine and children Alicia and George.
Why did you become a chef? I never really wanted to do anything else, I’m just lucky to have a career I feel passionate about.
Who are your favourite chefs? Charlie Trotter, Heston Blumenthal, he’s a real inspiration and Ferran Adria. What is your favourite dish/ingredient? My personal tastes are very traditional. I love a really good Shepherd’s pie with lots of flavour served with piles of fresh veg. For me a good kitchen is all about using fresh, local and seasonal produce.
Your worst kitchen nightmare? I was working on a private island as a personal chef for a few celebrities, sounds great, until Sir Andrew Lloyd Webber insisted on fresh oysters which had to dropped by helicopter – it certainly racked up the bill! Best advice for a novice? Cookbooks are a great way to learn the basics, especially things like sauces but, above all, you should enjoy yourself: cooking is all about having fun!
Who has influenced your cooking the most? In my early days, I would say, the late Charlie Trotter or Rick Stein, more recently my amazing family which has given me a whole new perspective on food and cooking. I’m much more relaxed!
Where did it all begin? I’m a local boy. I did my training at Braintree College followed by further training at Westminster college which gave me a great grounding for all types of cooking.
What’s in your fridge right now? All the usual things a family eats, lots of fresh fruit and veg plus bottles of full fat milk for my new son George!

What’s your last meal on earth, what would you choose? It would have to be a big Sunday roast with all the trimmings surrounded by all my family, including mum. Why Greenwoods? I’ve lived in Essex for most of my life and have always known of Greenwoods. It’s an amazing venue and now, since the refurbishment which includes the new-look restaurant it’s even better. I can’t wait to get involved with putting up here with one of the best hotels and restaurants in Essex. What is your favourite herb? I love cooking with herbs and my two favourites are rosemary and coriander, rosemary because if’s robust and gives lots of intense, aromatic flavour and coriander because of it’s amazing fragrance – it reminds me of my travels in Thailand!
THE ROSEWOOD, AT GREENWOODS HOTEL & SPA Whether you’ve spent the day in the spa or enjoyed a spot of afternoon tea in the comfy lounge there’s still dinner to relish at Greenwoods for residents or non-residents, says Charlotte Civil The hotel nestled in the picturesque village of Stock boasts a fabulous restaurant which serves an amazing menu devised by head chef Daniel Holland-Robinson and his team. The Rosewood situated just off the wood panelled bar area is split into three interconnecting rooms. Each one boasting a feature fireplace and decorative ceiling rose, just two of many traditional features that remain in this endearing building, parts
of which date back to the 17thcentury. The restaurant caters for 55 covers from tables for two, to round tables that seat four or more. Crisp white linen and pastel coloured-velvet upholstered chairs are set off beautifully by the classic Victorian decor especially in the restaurant’s farthest room which has an eye-catching teal colour scheme and huge crystal mirror on one wall. Enjoying a meal on Saturday night the restaurant was buzzing with couples enjoying date night and groups of girls out on the town sipping bubbly. The great atmosphere it seemed was had by all with diners lapping up the impeccable service and scrumptious food.
The menu offers whatever your palette desires. My seafood chowder with a poached egg ontop was light and flavoursome whilst my husband enjoyed crispy breaded goat’s cheese. For mains there’s a great choice of both fish and meat on the menu ’ From the Sea (fish) and From the Land (meat) which also include vegetarian options. I opted for roast fillet of cod with buttered prawns, brown shrimps and samphire whilst the other half plumped for roasted rump of English lamb accompanied by unusual but tasty herb and olive crushed potatoes and vine tomatoes. If you’ve room there’s a choice of desserts from naughty but nice parfaits and tarts to an Artisan cheese selection and

“
MY aim as teacher is to inspire my students and pass on my knowledge, skills and love of the performing arts,” says Nicole Leigh, dance tutor and owner of Brentwood-based Dance Space Essex. Nicole is passionate about how performing arts play a vital role in the development of young children and thinks they should be accessible to everyone whether they are looking to pursue a career in the arts or performing just for fun. “We offer classes from the age of two to 21, in ballet, contemporary, Modern Theatre Dance and Drama,” she explains. “In April the students at the school are given the opportunity to audition with two major agencies Reality Management and RL&P Children’s Agency. Currently one of our senior students Ella Moss is in The Wizard of Oz with Rare

Productions.” Dance Space Essex teaches both boys and girls and offers free taster sessions to those not sure if it’s something they want to commit to. “There is something to suit everyone,” says Nicole, “I believe what we offer is unique; we are a small community where every student is valued.” Nicole is the perfect role model for her pupils. She started dancing at the age of five. “At age 11 I was awarded a scholarship to attend the arts educational school by which time I knew I wanted to pursue a career in the Arts. I then went onto enrol in a three year theatre dance course at London Studio Centre. I started my teaching career at just 13 as an assistant ballet teacher and always knew I’d wanted a career in teaching.” Nicole’s accomplishments don’t stop there either. She is also a member of The Imperial Society
of Teachers of Dancing (ISTD) and qualified in Imperial Classical Ballet and Modern Theatre Dance; she holds a 1st class Honours Degree in Dance and currently is planning a Master’s Degree. “I have taught at some of the best of the colleges in the country including The Urdang Academy and Colin’s performing Arts, trained many Billy Elliot Ballet girls, prepared students for professional performing arts colleges and have a 100% pass rate for all Ballet and Modern examinations, but the time came to start something of my own and Dance Space Essex was born last year.”
Lessons are fun at Dance Space Essex During the school holidays Dance Space Essex holds a variety of workshops. This February half term the workshop will be based around Crafterina, ‘a ballet dancer that crafts their way to magical adventures’, the workshop takes place on February 17th 10am-12.30pm for 4-8 year-olds. During the Easter holidays there will be musical theatre and jazz workshops with West End professional Cleopatra Joseph who has been in Hairspray, Soul Sister and
Dancing in the Streets. During the summer holidays Greg McPherson head of foundation course at Urdang and a leading dancer and choreographer, whose credits range from Ray Charles, Footloose, The Brits, Sugar Babes and Little Mix is running a commercial and contemporary dance workshop offering students the opportunity to work alongside a leading professional. N
ESTLING in the quiet leafy lanes of rural Essex is a Rolls-Royce dealership that has built a reputation over the years as a purveyor of the finest examples of the famous marques cars, from its original founding in 1904 to present-day range of new models. Just as a tiny acorn grows into a mighty oak, P & A Wood, based at Great Easton near Stansted, are renowned not just in this country, but around the world for their expertise in all things Rolls-Royce, repairing and restoring Rolls-Royces of all types, with “attention to detail’’ being the companies motto. Twins Paul and Andrew Wood, now 68, started the business from humble beginnings by buying a Bond mini car for £25 in need of repair. At the same time Paul had seen a Rolls-Royce, unloved and unused parked in a street in Leytonstone, and placed a note on the windscreen asking the owner if it was for sale. The owner replied with an asking price of £65, which is what they sold the repaired Bond mini car for and set in motion the brothers first purchase of a Rolls-Royce. In 1967, when they had both completed their

apprenticeships with Rolls-Royce, they started their own business based in Moreton, with one of the first restoration projects being a Bentley used by Stead in The Avengers TV series. With increasing work, a move to bigger premises in 1970 to Great Bardfield employing 12 staff up until 1989 when they moved again to their present location at Great Easton, which was then just a small country garage, but had space for expansion which continued apace for many years. In June last year, a brand new building adjacent to the original garage (now a shadow of its former self and expanded beyond recognition), was opened as a new car showroom with an investment of around £3 million and coincided with 50 years of P & A Wood’s restoration work on Rolls-Royce cars. Invitations sent out to customers saw more than 100 concours winning cars attend, eclipsing the world-famous Pebble Beach Concours D’Elegance event in California. The overall site is now extensive with separate large workshop areas for every conceivable type of repair whether it be mechanical, coachwork or full or part refurbishment with the company now employing 65 staff working on around 100 cars from around the globe. RENTWOOD Town moved up to third in Ryman Division One North after they came from behind to beat Waltham Abbey 3-2 at The Arena. Jason Hallett gave the Abbotts an early lead before goals from Tom Richardson and a Sam Bantick brace put Brentwood in the driving seat. Hallett scored again three minutes from time to ensure a nervy finish, but the hosts held on for the win. There were two changes to the Brentwood side that beat Thamesmead Town on Tuesday. Ryan O’Rawe came into the team after missing out in the week, but the most notable inclusion was the return of striker Alex Akrofi on loan from Maidstone United. It was the visitors who had the better of the opening exchanges, though, and in the 12th

minute they took a deserved lead. Midfielder Tom Bruno provided the perfect lofted free-kick and the striker rose above the Brentwood defence to steer a header past goalkeeper Ollie Bowles into the far corner. It took the home side until midway through the first half to show some attacking intent, but once they did they caused Abbey problems. Jayden Purdue made an excellent fingertip save to deny skipper Martyn Stokes, but moments later Bantick brought the Blues level. The winger charged into the box, beating the challenge of two defenders before drilling the ball past the Abbey keeper in the 29th minute.
The teams remained tied at 1-1 until three minutes into the second half when Brentwood went in front. Christian Mbulu knocked down a Robbie Rees corner allowing Tom Richardson to poke home from close range. Purdue did his best to deny Brentwood a third by turning a powerful volley from Rees onto the crossbar, but with 58 minutes gone the Blues increased their lead. Daryl Robson put Bantick through on goal and he glanced past Purdue before slotting into the empty net to score his fourth goal in two games. Purdue kept Abbey in the match with yet another fine save to deny Bantick a hat-trick, but at the other end chances went begging for both James Peagram and Hallett.
The latter did manage to get one back for the Abbotts with a well-taken header three minutes from time, however Brentwood did enough to pick up maximum points. “We made it harder than we needed to make it,” said joint-boss Adam Flanagan, “but ultimately it was just about building momentum.” Brentwood are now third in the league but Flanagan isn’t getting ahead of himself: “That’s where I would like us to be but like I’ve said all along, we’ll take one game at a time and see how we get on.” Brentwood: Bowles, Mbulu, Baucutt, Stokes, O’Rawe, Rees (C) (McFarlane 76’), Love, Robson, Akrofi (Ngandu 80’), Richardson (Osei 67’), Bantick. Young players do Essex proud ESSEX squash players delivered magnificent displays in the InterCounty Cup at the weekend with all four teams booking their places into the second round stages. Essex fielded two teams at Under-13 level with both squads dominating the opposition. The Essex Under-13 A squad hosted Kent and Suffolk at Lexden, Colchester and were in impressive form. The squad of Hattie Callen, Calum Ewens, Ruby Mae Hudson and Brandon HigginsPearce first overcame Kent 3-1 and went one better against Suffolk recording a 4-0 victory. The Essex U-15’s of Charlie Bacon, Alex Walton, Amy Aspinall and Elli Barrott and
Essex U13’s B team of Aiden Cahill, Max Chilver, Poppy SmeeHotene and Libby Connor travelled to Biggin Hill to play against Kent and Middlesex. Everybody in the U13’s B beat their Middlesex opponent, dropping only two games to win 12-2. In the Kent team, the number one girl felt ill and had to withdraw, which meant that Libby got a crucial walkover, winning 3-0. Although Max and Aiden lost their matches, most of their games were really close. With Poppy winning her match 3-1, it meant that the fixture was tied at 7-7 in games and it was out with the calculators and Essex
came out victorious at 130 points to 105. For the U15’s against Middlesex, both Amy and Alex went down 3-1, but there were only a few points difference in every game. Charlie won 3-0 as did Elli, who dropped only two points in her 3-0 victory. Essex won 8-6. The U15’s match against Kent was nerve-racking and went right down to the wire. It was left to Amy and Elli to produce the victory. Charlie and Alex both narrowly lost their hard fought matches 3-2. Elli came from 2-1 down to beat her opponent 3-2 and Amy, by winning 3-1, made the difference between the teams as Essex came out

The Under-17 team of Will Salmons, George Rapley, Laura Burr and Paige McCoy were involved in an incredibly competitive clash against Middlesex and Kent with all three teams finishing with a win apiece. Essex finished second overall after beating Middlesex 3-1 and losing to Kent by the same score. Kent then toppled Middlesex 3-1 so it was down to the calculators again with Kent finishing top, Essex second and Middlesex third. n Chelmsford’s Daryl Selby made it three BSPA Edinburgh squash titles in a row with a finely balanced win over second seed Shaun Le Roux recently. Selby took the first and second 12-10. Le Roux took the third and forged ahead 10-5 in the next. Selby mounted another comeback, this time seven points in a row with Le Roux unable to find a finish.

Quick scores set the scene BRENTWOOD kicked off down the slope, and within minutes winger Eddie Greenfield raced away to score in the far corner. This early success was followed shortly after when Joel Bevans-Royston crashed over and the conversion was added by James Cowen, to give the home side a healthy lead of 12-0. At this early stage Brentwood were very much in charge with the forwards dominating, with Captain Josh Woodcock leading from the front being well supported by Lewis Pratley, and man of the match evergreen James Metcalfe. It therefore came as no surprise when Eddie Greenfield raced away to score a further try after fine handling from the centres Adam Thomas and Jonathan Wylie, to take the score to a very healthy 17-0. To their credit Ruislip, began to claw their way back into the game and territorially controlled the rest of the half, but good tackling by both forwards and backs limited their scoring to a solitary penalty at half time. Ruislip dominated the early minutes of the second half and their left winger broke away from the Brentwood defence to score a try in the corner, which was converted taking the score to 17-10.

Brentwood dug deep and responded with a glorious try from Jed Roman who charged through the Ruislip defence to score, which unfortunately was not converted taking the score to 22-10, but with all to play for. Ruislip, after a spell of continuous pressure scored a further converted try making the score 22-17, and Brentwood new that they still had a lot to do to win the game. The next 15 minutes, was all Brentwood pressure, and they were rewarded with two further tries, following a period of forward domination, scored by Nick Binet, and Tom King, both converted by James Cowan, which took the score to 36-17, and secured the allimportant bonus point. With time slipping by the speedy Ruislip winger scored a further try, which was not converted, taking the final score to 36-22. Special mention needs to be made of 17-yearold James Vogel, the latest product of the clubs very successful youth set up who made his first team debut.

AST Saturday’s 73-69 loss at Reading Rockets saw Leopards drop to joint second in the Division One table, while Kent Crusaders went top with a 30-point hammering of second placed Derby Trailblazers, and the league title looks set to go down to the wire this season. Coach Youngblood will be hoping that the chest infection which ruled leading scorer Dave Ajumobi’s out of the Reading game has cleared up as the Big Cats clearly missed the British forward. The Big Cats, with 14 points from captain Albert Margai, led for most of the game but came up short at the end as Rockets’ English forward Danny Carter took over the game with his side’s final nine points. Courtney Van Beest made a rare start in the absence of Ajumobi to finish with 13 points and seven rebounds, while Will Ashby added 12 points and Ladi Brown eight.

Lawrence Brown got Leopards off the mark with a dunk, and after Van Beest had sunk a trey to put them 7-4 up, they led the throughout the opening period before Ladi Brown’s sent them into the first break with a 21-13 lead. Ashby kept Leopards ahead with a pair of three-pointers and Margai also scored from downtown in a quarter that
saw both teams live at the foul line, and it was Ashby who sunk a pair of freethrows to give the visitors a 60-53 lead. Carter opened the fourth period scoring as Rockets tied the score with the first seven points before Byron Richards put Leopards back in front. Lawrence Brown fouled out with 6:18 on the clock and the game tied, and a Carter jump shot put his side up by six at the 3:50 mark before back-to-back scores from Van Beest and a second Richards gave the visitors a 69-68 lead with 2:36 remaining. That proved to be as good as it got for the Big Cats, though as Carter took over on his way to a game-high 27 points, and when Ashby missed a pair at the line with four seconds remaining, Leopards third league loss of the season was confirmed. n Leopards face another key topof-the-table clash on Saturday when they travel to Gillingham to face Kent Crusaders.

A FORTUITOUS goal from Joe Ward and an own goal by Darren Locke was enough for the Clarets to hold on and record the three points. Ward’s cross-cum-shot flashed across goal and into the bottom corner in the second minute of first-half stoppage time before Darren Locke turned Jack Bridge’s cross into his own net. The St Albans centre-back made amends for his error by pulling one back shortly after, setting up a nervy end to the match in which the Saints came close to earning a share of the spoils. Jaanai Gordon, on-loan from West Ham United, chased Jack Bridge’s teasing cross into the box and, by doing so, forced Darren Locke to prod the ball into his own net as City’s lead was doubled. The first time the City defence came close to caving in was through Lee Chappell’s tremendously long throw. The visitors reacted to that damaging setback by bringing on Manny Soetan at the expense of Charlie Smith and it looked to be an inspired substitution. Darren Locke made up for his earlier gaffe when he poked home from inside the six-yard box as the Clarets failed to deal with a simple ball in the area. Centre-back Yado Mambo replaced striker Jaanai Gordon in an attempt to shore up the defence as Michael Cheek operated as the lone

THE Jets had a lot of the game during the first half with the Galleywood goalkeeper having to come off his line to stop Ethan’s shot on goal. Minutes before the end of the first half, the Jets had the opportunity to score but how the ball didn’t go in remains a mystery to manager and supporters alike! Galleywood started the second half on the front foot but it wasn’t long before the Jets got back into the game, Jake D putting in a very well timed tackle to end a Falcons attack. Sophie once again was able to use her pace to get away from the defenders but the ball just wouldn’t go in and very much against the run of play an on a break away, the Falcons scored. The Jets once again showed their positivity as immediately Nathan passed to Sophie who found Daniel who in turn found Marcello whose shot skimmed the crossbar.
