CHOOLS in the East of England are being invited to donate books to schools in rural parts of South Africa, as part of a competition to learn about farming in the country. The 2015 Help a South African School competition asks children in Years One through to 11 to learn about fruit farming and the difference it makes to the lives of families in South

Africa, and to produce a collage of their learnings. There are two top prizes of £1,000 for winning schools in two school year categories to spend on resources. There are also prizes for two second and two third placed schools. All entrants will receive a certificate signed by the South African Ambassador to the UK. Schools are asked to submit their

entry alongside a donation of used books. These will be collected from schools free of charge by courier company myHermes, and shipped to South Africa using donated services by Damco and partner shipping line Maersk. Schools who do not wish to enter a collage can also choose to donate books only.

T IS every parent’s worst nightmare – their child going missing on a fun day out. As Southend gears up for the busy Easter Bank Holiday weekend, the town’s Business Improvement District (BID) organisation is re-launching its successful OnSouthend child safety scheme to help families stay safe and reassured when they visit. Since they were launched in July 2013, over 60,000 bright yellow wristbands have been handed out to children and such has been their popularity and impact that 20,000 more have been ordered. The bands will be available

from over 20 participating businesses across the town centre and seafront including the Royals Shopping Centre, Victoria Shopping Centre and Adventure Island. Parents and carers can collect a free wristband from shops, restaurants, shopping centres and leisure attractions. They then simply write their telephone number on the reverse and give it to the child to wear - meaning if the youngster inadvertently wanders off and is helped by a responsible adult, a quick phone call will soon reunite them with their family and friends. Adults will also be given

ENGINEERING COMPETITION

cards to carry in their purse or wallet, giving clear and concise advice about what to do if a child in their care goes missing, including the all-important 101 number to call. Southend BID Manager Alison Dewey said: “Southend is a super place to bring the kids for a day out but it can become very busy and with so much to see and do, youngsters can be tempted to wander off. “The Child Safety Scheme

has demonstrated that it goes a long way to reassuring families and, with our Street Rangers a highly visible resource to welcome and help visitors and local residents, we have made having fun in Southend even safer.” Essex Police is firmly behind the scheme. Inspector Bill Potter who is responsible for Neighbourhood Policing in Southend town centre said: “With 6 million visitors

every year, the population of Southend can, in certain circumstances, multiply tenfold. Consequently, it can take a lot of our time and effort trying to find and reunite lost children. Less children getting lost means less distressed children and their families suffering that agonising wait in between.” For more information about the Child Safety Scheme and where the wristbands can be collected, visit onsouthend.com

Building bridges is a winner STUDENTS from Shenfield High School took first place when they competed against schools from Chelmer Valley boys’ and girls’ teams, Boswells, and Great Baddow

High School, in a bridge construction competition organised held at Anglian Ruskin University. Five students from Years Eight and Nine worked over

a period of nine weeks to construct the bridge using only 25 thin pine sticks. The competition rules stated that the bridge must have a minimum length of 790mm, a width of 150mm and a height of 90 mm. Students worked alongside Lance Gill of Shenfield Construction and Shenfield High School science teachers Claire Helim, who is Science, Technology and Mathematics (STEM) co-ordinator, and Simon Carter to construct their impressive bridge. AECOM supported and organised the event. They are an engineering, consulting, operations and maintenance service company with a presence in more than 160 countries.

Gap widens for first-time house buyers THE widening gap between house prices and wages means that first-time buyers living in the East of England are having to pay over £60,000 more for a home, new research from Shelter reveals. With average house prices in the East of England now 11 times the average wage,

compared to just six times 15 years ago, Shelter is warning that aspiring homeowners on ordinary incomes without access to the Bank of Mum and Dad have little hope of covering the extra cost. This is having a dramatic impact on young people’s chances of owning a home

across the country. In 1991, two-thirds of people aged 25-34 had a home of their own, compared with just over one-third of people in that age group today. Instead, millions of young adults are stuck in their childhood bedrooms or in the rent trap paying dead money to landlords.

Television adverts can encourage children to eat unhealthy food

Call to ban junk food adverts NEW statistics show the majority of parents in East Anglia believe stopping children being exposed to junk food television adverts could cut childhood obesity. The British Heart Foundation (BHF) polled 2,000 UK parents and found 54% of parents in East Anglia believe that stopping children being exposed to junk food adverts could help, and well over half of parents say that adverts promoting foods that are high in saturated fat, salt and sugar affect what their children want to eat. Half of parents in the region also say junk food adverts make it harder for them to say no to their children or get them to eat healthily.

Yet loopholes in the UK regulatory system mean that junk food adverts which are banned during children’s programming can still be shown during family programming, such as X-Factor, when children’s TV viewing peaks. More than 30,000 people have backed the BHF’s call to ban junk food adverts being shown before the 9pm watershed. Mike Hobday, Director of Policy at the British Heart Foundation, said: “By protecting young people against the sophisticated marketing techniques of junk food advertisers we can help tackle the obesity crisis which threatens the heart health of future generations.’’

NIVERSITY student Tom Parker is one of 10 photographers and the only UK finalist to be shortlisted for the 2015 Sony World Photography Awards Student Focus Programme. Tom, aged 21 from Billericay, Essex, secured his place in the final with a stunning shot of a mountain of scrap metal at Southampton Docks, in response to the brief asking for a single image symbolising contemporary consumer culture. Speaking about his photograph, titled Contemporary Culture, the final-year BA (Hons) Photography student said: “My work aims to introduce striking imagery while working with scale to produce large, frame-filled prints that are full of vibrancy and colour. The shortlisted photographers - selected from 230 educational institutions worldwide - will now compete for the Student Focus Photographer of the Year title, and €35,000 worth of Sony photography equipment for their university. The work must be shot using a Sony a7 with the 28-70mm kit lens which is given to each shortlisted student as part of their prize. All ten finalists will then be flown to London to attend the 2015 Sony World Photography Awards gala ceremony in London on 23 April 2015 In addition, each of the shortlisted photographers’ series of images will be shown as part of the 2015 Sony World Photography Awards Exhibition at Somerset House, London from April 24 to May 10 and have their work

Engineering scholarship for Vanessa VANESSA Fenlon, who left Great Baddow High School last summer with outstanding results, is celebrating further success in receiving the Diamond Jubilee Scholarship from the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET). She is just one of an elite set of engineering students who have been awarded the prestigious award as the IET and its partners invest a further £1.2m in the UK’s up and coming engineering talent over the next five years to tackle the lack of female engineers. Headteacher, Carrie Lynch said: ‘‘It’s no surprise that Vanessa’s talent, dedication and potential have been recognised in this way. “We are very proud of her and will continue to watch her progress with interest.’’ The IET Diamond Jubilee Scholarship scheme is now in its second year, and follows the £2

n CHARITIES across the country are fighting to stay afloat as they struggle to raise money and meet ever increasing demand, says new research by the Charities Aid Foundation (CAF) and the Association of Chief Executives Voluntary Organisations (ACEVO). One in seven charity chief executives say their organisation is ‘‘struggling to survive,’’ growing to one in five among smaller charities with an income under £1 million, which make up 96% of the sector. A third of charities have dipped into their reserves to cover an income shortfall in the last year.

Tom Parker’s picture of scrap metal at Southampton docks published in the 2015 edition of the annual Sony World Photography Awards book. Proud of his student’s success, Photography Lecturer Tom Slevin said: “His work reflects our philosophy towards photography – a medium through which we can express ideas, address issues, and tell stories in a visually engaging way.”

million figure that the IET has already invested last year. The scholarships will provide each winner with at least £1,000 per academic year. Winners will also benefit from mentoring and work experience placements through the IET’s extensive networks, in an attempt to close the ever growing skills gap of female engineers. This year, 69 scholarships have been awarded to students

Vanessa Fenlon

who started either a Masters or an Undergraduate engineering degree at a UK-based university in the autumn of 2014, and nearly half of these have been awarded to female candidates (42%) up from just 19% of scholarships which were given to female applicants last year. Currently, just 6% of the UK’s engineering work force is female. William Webb, IET President commented: “The number of women in the engineering work force is appallingly low, so we are really pleased that so many young women are making use of the financial help. “However, it’s not just women we need – it has been estimated that approximately 87,000 new engineers will be needed each year until 2020 to address the current skills shortage.” Prospective students who wish to apply for a Diamond Jubilee Scholarship can apply soon at theiet.org/diamond.

A NEW Dog Activity Trail has opened in Thorndon Country Park – and a dog’s life has never been more fun. The trail is made up of 10 obstacles which are sure to get tails wagging. The obstacles take their inspiration from those used in dog agility competitions so it’s a great way to get a taster of what agility is like. Most obstacles are in two sizes to accommodate dogs of all types and abilities. It is approximately 500 metres in length, is free to use and it can be started at either end. The two starting points can be seen from Thorndon Park South

Cafe and the trail runs around the edge of the field. The scheme is an initiative created by the Forestry Commission, the Kennel Club and dog agility experts. It was built by a team of volunteers from Thorndon Guardians, a community group who work alongside the Rangers undertaking conservation work, construction tasks and wildlife surveying/recording. They also undertake warden activities, such as checking on grazing animals, reporting safety issues, undertaking some general admin tasks and fund raising. Find out more at thorndonguardians.co.uk

Bake with the kids this Easter

BAKING school in Great Wakering is opening its doors to parents and children this Easter as it hosts a range of fun and inspiring baking classes designed with kids in mind. Running throughout the school holidays, the classes at the Delightful Tea Bake School will cover a range of topics from making cake pops and soda bread, to cup cakes and teatime treats. Each class is designed with a specific age group in mind for parents with kids aged 7 to 9 years old and 10 to 14 years old, to ensure all the classes are run at a level the children can follow. “These classes are designed to introduce some basic baking skills that the children can learn here and then take home and practice with their parents,” explains Sarah Plumb who runs the classes. “We’ve been running these classes in the holidays over the last year and they are incredibly popular with both parents and children and a great way to keep the kids amused during the Easter break. They are a lot of fun and the kids have a great time,” she added. Classes will run on 7th, 8th and 9th of April. All details on prices, times and how to book can be found at www.delightfultea.co.uk

HIGHWAY SAFETY

Young driver training sessions WORRINGLY statistics show that two out of 10 newly-qualified drivers will crash within six months of passing their test, rising to 40 per cent of 17-year old males, but only eight per cent of drivers are aged 17-24 and yet they account for 30 per cent of people who are killed in cars every year. But for those who have taken a Young Driver course, the rate of accidents in the first six months after passing their test drops by more than a half, to fewer than one in ten. The lessons take place on specially designed courses at 30 venues across Great Britain, including at Lakeside in Essex. Youngsters have lessons in real, dual-control cars, with fully qualified instructors and learn the same skills as they would on the road at 17 and they have a couple of full day sessions

running at Easter, on Wednesday 8th April and Saturday 11th April, at which lessons can be booked and cost £34.95 for 30 minutes and £64.95 for 60 minutes. At a Young Driver session dual-controlled Skoda Citigo cars are used and tuition is provided by highly qualified CRB-checked driving instructors. With a full road system with traffic signs, youngsters are encouraged to consider responsible driving. A personalised Drive Diary can chart how they do and when the young person is ready to take to the roads at 17, their driving instructor will instantly be able to see their previous experience. Sessions must be booked in advance and for more information see website youngdriver.eu

James Godfrey and David Creighton with their sky diving certificates

Duo sky dive for charity TWO recruitment consultants took to the skies recently and did a sky dive for Farleigh Hospice and raised £1,270. James Godfrey and David Creighton, both work for Athona Ltd, based in Brentwood and described it as “the best experience we’ve ever had.” The reason they did the fundraising is, as you suspected, because of a personal link. James’s grandmother stayed at Farleigh Hospice before she

died three years ago, and he was impressed with the level of care she received. He said: “They did a lot for my Nan, and I’ve always vowed I wanted to give something back to them.” Athona Ltd nominate one or two charities to fundraise for throughout the year. In 2014, they made £10,000 for Little Havens. This year, they’re fundraising for Guide Dogs for the Blind and St Francis Hospice.

Go meet free in May

P

EOPLE across the UK are being urged to give up meat this May to boost their health and help the planet. Meat Free May 2015, organised by environmental charity Friends of the Earth, is calling on people to change their diets for a month, with the aim of encouraging them to move on to lower and better meat diets more permanently.

Most people eat meat twice a day without even thinking about it. But the amount of meat and fish we feast on is damaging our planet n Livestock production makes up 14.5% of the total global greenhouse gas emissions and drives deforestation. Our taste for fish is also stripping the seas: over 70% of the world’s fish stocks are over or fully exploited. n Lower-meat diets in the UK could possibly prevent 45,000 early deaths each year, and save the NHS over £1.2 billion annually. Cutting down on meat and fish can seem daunting, so Friends of the Earth is providing free packs, crammed with information and tips, along with delicious meat-free recipes. Commenting on Meat

life threatening conditions and severe disabilities. Two of The Dream Factory’s patrons, Vicki Michelle MBE and Colin McMillan attended the special launch event along with some of the charity’s volunteers, two trustees and two dream families. These families have had first hand experience

of what a difference The Dream Factory can make on a young person’s life – Aiden Boland, aged 21, who suffers from Costello Syndrome and is wheelchair bound, had his dream granted to meet his favourite WWF wrestlers at Wembley, whilst the charity fulfilled 16-year-old Hope Fenton’s dream of having a spa bath in her home. Hope is blind, in a wheelchair and also suffers from Hydrocephlus. Patrons of The Dream Factory include, among others, Lisa-Marie Presley, Harry Redknapp, Pasty Palmer and Ray Winstone, who all work hard to support the charity. Avril Mills, founder of The Dream Factory, started the charity in 2008 in memory of her son Oliver, who died of Leukaemia aged 9, said: “We are delighted to be chosen as intu Lakeside’s charity of the year and we’re really excited to start working with them.’’ Since starting the charity in 2008, Avril and her dedicated team (who are mostly volunteers) have so far helped to make over 300 dreams come true, including everything from family trips to Disneyland Paris, to gifting new games consoles. ARTIST OF THE MONTH

THE DAISY BOWLERS

Chris is a vinyl lover

I

T IS no surprise that listening to music is a big part of Chris Siviter’s life, says the Phoenix FM presenter. “Even if I wasn’t presenting my show I’d still be listening to music whenever I can, attending gigs, hunting through piles of vinyl in record shops. I am a musicobsessed, vinyl-loving geek.” He joined Phoenix in October

Chris Siviter

2010, initially helping fellow presenter Steve Robertson on his sports show. So how would Chris describe his show? “The title 33RPM pretty much sums it up. Each week I play tracks from some of the weeks new album releases and also tracks from forthcoming albums and some old favourites from both established and local musicians.” As far as favourite artists go, he admits that he has quite a long list, but Sufjan Stevens - singersongwriter from the US is a big favourite. “He creates some of the most beautifully personal and stunning music you’ll ever hear,” he says. “Another is Grouper (singersongwriter Liz Harris) - who crafts amazingly haunting and ethereal songs, I call it music for the afterlife.” Chris also credits local band

Fashoda Crisis, who hail from Southend, as one of the must-see live bands around and describes them as ‘a barrage of glorious noise with satirical lyrics that always put a massive smile on my face.’ So who has been the most interesting person he has interviewed on the show? “Last year I was lucky enough to interview a chap called Stuart Braithwaite who is the guitarist in a Scottish post-rock band called Mogwai. He is one of my heroes and I’ve been a fan of the band for a long time. He had great stories and it was everything I hoped the interview would be. I had smile on my face for weeks after that,” he says, still smiling. Chris presents 33RPM, Sunday evenings on Phoenix FM 98.0 between 8pm-10pm. www. phoenixfm.com

With music from the 1930’s, right up to up to today’s more contemporary jazzy tunes, their style really is unique. How did the band get together? When Heather returned from living in New York she wanted to start a vocal trio paying tribute to The Andrew Sisters and Boswell Sisters. Through a friend she found Debbie, a wonderful vocalist and Dave who was a Grammy nominated arranger and producer who became the girls’ musical director. In this format the girls worked together for 12 years, the pinnacle of their time together as The Swinging Belles, was singing at the world famous Ronnie Scotts. How would you describe their musical style? The Daisy Bowlers have developed their style from the influences of different bands they have all performed in. They still sing some

of the Boswell Sisters 1930’s vocal harmony tunes, they have a whole set of WWI tunes and enjoy performing many songs from the American songbook with their own quirky and humorous arrangements. They even throw in a few up-to-date jazzy tunes such as Caro Emerald’s That Man and Kate Davis’ version of All About The Bass. The Daisy Bowlers is a great name, how did it come about? The girls love flowers and ‘Daisy’ is a fun name but they had to think about Dave! So ‘ Bowlers’ was introduced to make the name a little more masculine and suggestive of the vintage music. Where can we catch them live? Most of their gigs are private at the moment however they always perform in Elsie’s Cafe in Leigh Community Centre, Leigh-on-Sea on the last Friday of every month. KICK-START CHALLENGE

Encouraging young business A NEW challenge designed to encourage entrepreneurship in local young people and raise funds for Saint Francis Hospice has kicked off. The Kick-Start Challenge will see applicants competing over a six month period from June to November. Many local business people including sports promoter Barry Hearn are supporting the scheme or acting as mentors to the competing students. “I’m involved with Saint Francis Hospice because they did a really good job at saying goodbye to my

mother-in-law Joan,” said Barry. “Today’s market is so different to the one when I was growing up. Today there’s loads of opportunity but the competition is intense.” Those attending the launch event also heard from inspirational speaker and young entrepreneur Junior Ogunyemi. A best-selling author at just 21-years-old with his book “How to be a Student Entrepreneur,” he encouraged students to seize the opportunity

presented by the KickStart Challenge, which was recently launched at Havering College. The Kick-Start Challenge is open to residents of any of the four boroughs served by Saint Francis Hospice (Havering, Redbridge, Barking & Dagenham and Brentwood) aged 16-21. Successful applicants will receive £500 seed money and the opportunity to run their business for six months. Money raised during

the six months will go to Saint Francis Hospice. The competitor or competitors who raise the most money by November 30 will win £1,500 and the offer of work experience at both Matchroom Sport and Saint Francis Hospice and a year’s free membership of Havering’s Young Chamber of Commerce. Calm and comfortable birthing Debs King always had a fear of pregnancy and childbirth since her childhood, so when she discovered she was expecting her son she had one of the biggest hurdles of her life to overcome.

T

HE day I found out about Roni was a bit of a surprise. I’d suffered from Tocophobia (fear of pregnancy and childbirth) since I was a child, so childbirth wasn’t an option for me. I phoned the doctors who said I needed to confirm the pregnancy test. I’d been having stomach pains all that week. I called NHS direct, who said the pains could be either appendicitis or an eptopic pregnancy, and I should go to A&E immediately. At the hospital I underwent several tests. A scan eventually revealed I was 5 weeks 2 days pregnant and thankfully it wasn’t eptopic. On the way home, the fear and reality started to kick in. I began to feel scared about the one thing that has put me off ever having a baby childbirth itself. A friend suggested I try hypnosis which would calm me down. I searched the internet for ways to have a ‘pain free birth.’ Thinking it would be impossible to find I came across a site about ‘Hypnobirthing’ which sounded really interesting. Hypnobirthing, is founded on the belief that childbirth is a natural, normal part of a woman’s life and that, as such her body will know how to birth by instinct, calmly, with support but without medical intervention. Its techniques help mums-to-be to stay in control and calm during labour and birth. There’s evidence that using hypnosis in labour can result in: • a shorter first stage labour

• less intense pain • better scores in your baby’s first

checks • a shorter stay in hospital I contacted the Hypnobirthing practitioner, titling the email subject header ‘HELP ME, I’m petrified’. She soon got in touch and talked me through what Hypnobirthing was and sent me a book to read. Meanwhile, the nightmares about hospitals and giving birth started to kick in, the hot and cold sweats, and the anxiety I thought I was going to feel for the rest of the pregnancy. I’d be sick through fear, not through pregnancy, I’d pass out wandering around the supermarket. My husband Simon also started to worry about me, as he knows how I have no pain threshold at all! When the book arrived and I started to read it. Slowly but surely, giving birth, really seemed to make sense, how the uterus works and how we are all designed to give birth and the pain only kicks in because we fight it and how we need to be more re-laxed and focussed, I started to understand the whole process and feel much more at ease. I attended the Hypnobirthing course with Simon in the October (the ideal time to start classes is between 25 and 29 weeks of pregnancy) where I openly admitted that it wouldn’t work for me.

But I was proven wrong. It was a real eye opener and helped me to embrace a different attitude to the way we think labour and birth will occur. Tightening or surges, rather than painful contractions, practice labour that helps your body get used to what to expect and birth breathing rather than pushing contractions were all talked about as well as positions for labour and birth, deep relaxation and self-hypnosis and breathing techniques. Hypnobirthing made me so calm and

relaxed about things, I decided I was going to have a natural birth, without drugs, for the good of my baby. It really helped. I was so calm during the remainder of the pregnancy so much so, that I laughed when I realised I had gone into labour. I went into early stages at 11.50pm on December 15 when the contractions started to kick in. At the hospital I had two midwives who were aware of my birthing plan, and under-stood that if I could, I would like to do it all naturally. However, after several hours in the birthing pool, and the baby going back to back, I said I might need to take something for the pain in my back as it was unbearable! Gas and air combined with the breathing techniques I learnt on the course and not long after my

beautiful baby boy, Roni was born, at 4.02am. He made a tiny squeal and looked around the room. It wasn’t a pain free birth, like I had hoped to find at the start, but I managed to get through it by totally focussing myself on the birth I wanted, understanding how the contractions worked, and trying to ride with them, rather than fight them and feeling the most determined I ever have for the good of my baby. My husband Simon loved the Hynpobirthing too as it gave him a role and involved him from the beginning, he never once felt like a spare part. Did it put me off having another. Of course not. I am now a mum-of-two, to con-tented son Roni as well as a second baby, Izzie, who was born without any pain re-lief, in 2.5 hrs start to finish with no pushing what so ever. I spent my life completely petrified of something I thought I’d die from and discov-ered using simple techniques, it can really change your life. I now teach Hypnobirthing and love to pass on all the information I’ve learnt. I’ve also since had major surgery and using the same hypno-techniques I managed to walk to theatre, where before I would have run away! It really works. Get great skin for spring with the new Herbalife SKIN line…

Herbalife – probably best known for their weight loss and sports nutrition products – have launched a brand new, high performance skincare range designed to help tackle all manner of skin complaints, with results that can be seen in just seven days.

T

HE clinically tested, expert range was developed in conjunction with top Dermatologists and Ophthalmologists and features 11 key high performance products with a powerhouse blend of 15 vitamins and botanicals to enrich skin. From skin energisers that wake you up whilst you sip your morning shake to soothing creams and serums that feed your face as you sleep – there’s a product solution to suit all skin types. An added bonus is that there are no added parabens or sulphates and results are speedy – perfect if you’re stuck in a skin care rut and need something effective and fast-working to whip your skin into shape. The Polishing Citrus Cleanser is great for a pick me up in the morning, whilst the Line Minimising Serum,

Regenerating Night Cream and Hydrating Eye Cream work harmoniously together overnight to double skin’s moisture levels, leaving skin plump and primed for the day ahead. If you’re looking to boost your beauty routine further this spring, Herbalife SKIN ambassador and celebrity facialist, Arezoo Kaviani advises facial massage as an effective complexion booster: “The key to facial massage is the heat that is generated on the surface of the skin. As your fingers warm your skin, blood flow and circulation increases which in turn, can support the production of collagen. It’s a great beauty ritual to get into and has the added benefit of being wonderfully relaxing and restoring too - something we should all be doing every day”, she says.

And if you’re not already doing so, opt for a moisturiser that provides added daily protection under make up, like Herbalife SKIN Protective SPF30 Protective Daily Moisturiser. “Whether it’s morning, afternoon or evening – protection from the sun is key and imperative in the fight against anti-ageing. A high SPF is essential to help your skin look more youthful for longer”, says Arezoo. Other hero products in the range include the Daily Glow Moisturiser – an antioxidant infused cream with illuminating properties that cast a healthy glow over the skin and the Purifying Mint Mask – a soothing, creamy mask formulated with Bentonite Clay, Spearmint Oil and Rosemary Leaf to detox the skin and remove dirt and oil. Arezoo’s favourite – the Hydrating Eye Cream – is a great one for tired eyes and is packed with soothing Vitamin B3, antioxidant Vitamins C and E, Aloe Vera, Macadamia nut oil and Cucumber extract, helping to fend off the signs of ageing, as well as increasing the skin’s moisture levels whilst you sleep. Those wanting to try Herbalife SKIN should consider the 7 Day Results Kit which contains some signature products from the range and is a great way to see what kind of results you can expect to see. Visit www.herbalifeskin.co.uk for more information and to find your local Herbalife Representative. Prices start from £14.60.

Three spa ways to have chocolate a selection of scented muds and a strawberry scrub for two so in addition to being utterly decadent, it’s also seriously romantic. Glowing skin, total relaxation and then the treatment is topped off with an afternoon tea and Prosecco – it’s Easter the grown-up way!

E

ASTER is approaching, which for most of us means one thing – chocolate. But in amongst all of the general conversation about how bad chocolate is for us (not that I am taking a phenomenal amount of notice if I am perfectly), there is another way to enjoy chocolate this Easter, the spa way…as Bonnie Friend, Editor at Spabreaks.com reveals

Bannatyne Health Clubs and Spas across the country offer a chocolate back and leg massage, which has to be one of the nicest thoughts in the world. I defy anyone to come away from a massage at the best of times without feeling pretty happy, but add chocolate into the mix and it all becomes really rather decadent.

Caked in chocolate at Bryn Meadows

Bryn Meadows Hotel & Spa in Wales always has the most beautiful mud rasuls, which change throughout the year to accommodate the seasons. The packages are beautifully put together, and their Love Package, which includes a chocolate mud and strawberry rasul is no different. The rasul itself features

Clumber Park

The New Leaf Chocolate Ritual at Clumber Park Hotel & Spa in Nottingham makes you glow after total indulgence rather than… well, grow. A 55-minute treatment starting with a body brush, it includes a chocolate scrub, which smells as though it’s something you should really be eating. When the scrub is washed off, a body cream is applied and you are wrapped up to let the products work their magic while you have a facial and scalp massage. At the end, your skin feels amazing, and as a final flourish you are treated to a hot chocolate with marshmallows and cream in the relaxation area (or snug) afterwards… who said cream and chocolate weren’t good for you? URSE!

Local fitness expert Helen Barness has some simple tips to help get you get up and going for your summer workouts so you can start working towards that beach body you want “THE winter can have a negative effect on your schedule with dark nights and dark mornings, the cold and rainy weather puts a downer on your energy levels and all you want to do is stay inside were it’s warm and cosy and you put off working-out so much that it becomes the norm,” says Helen. “All that inactivity during the winter will make you put on a few pounds and make it harder to get back into the swing of things but there are some cheats you can use to get used to working out again”. So how can you get yourself back in action and Spring Fit? 1. Find a friend to work out with Having a workout buddy helps you stay motivated during your workouts and also keeps you going by not wanting to let each other down by not going 2. Try a new class Starting a new class keeps you from getting stuck in a rut and

just going through the motions Your body will be tested by trying new exercises and you can get great results by keeping your body on it’s toes. I love trying out new fitness trends to give my body a change and I always find different areas shape up as a result! What about trying Clubbercise where you feel like you’re working out at a disco? Piloxing or Piloxing Knockout? Have you tried Booty Barre or one of the new barre workouts? There are even Treadmill classes now hitting America! 3. Get outdoors Now the summer is coming the weather is more welcoming for runs around the park or joining a Bootcamp or just a good long family walk or bike ride at weekends. Remember we all need a bit of Vitamin D, so open the curtains and let the sun in! 4. Early morning classes Now that the mornings are brighter there’s more encouragement to get out there

for a workout. I know it may seem hard to get up a bit earlier, but the benefits of exercising in the morning are huge making it well worth your while to pull back those covers and get up! 5. Water workout What could be better when the heat picks up than to take a refreshing swim and don’t forget the water gives your joints a break whilst you still workout hard. Start gradually If you have not exercised for some time, don’t try and do every class in one week, pace yourself and see how your body reacts. Rest and repair is just as important as working out. If you want more details on how to get back into fitness contact Helen on 07956 520767 or email h.barness@btinternet.com - we are happy to help and give you any advice you need.

BODY BEAUTIFUL Banishing those problem areas

Celebrities such as Patsy Kensit and Coleen Rooney are ecstatic with the results and now beautician and model Amy Childs has brought the treatment to her Brentwood salon. Speaking with Amy at the launch of 3D Lipo at her salon, she explained why she had the treatment. “I went through a period not being able to train/go to the gym because of complications caused by my breast implants. However, I still had various photo shoots I was committed to so wanted to look my best.

WE are talking 3D Lipo. Probably one of the most advanced treatments of its type in the fight against targeted fat reduction, cellulite and skin tightening.

this is a fantastic option.

For many of us who suffer from dreaded bingo wings, stubborn ‘mummy tummy,’ loose skin from previous weight loss and even orange peel things -

You may be thinking, why would someone with the ‘perfect size 10’ figure even dream of having this fat reduction treatment?

Whilst Coleen reportedly lost three inches from her stomach and 5 lbs, Amy Childs dropped a dress size from size 10 to size 8.

“I have had a number of treatments to tackle a variety of areas. I had it on my tummy which I wanted to get tighter and flatter and in between and on the backs of my legs. After after just a couple of sessions, I actually started to notice a difference. It’s incredible.” Amy also credits the sessions for not being long or painful. “When I leave the clinic I can carry on with my day without having to worry about recovering, which is perfect,” she says. “It was an ideal treatment to offer at my own salon and I know my clients are going to love it.” 3D Lipo is a noninvasive treatment, offering localised fat reduction, treatment of cellulite and skin tightening so you can banish the pounds quickly, effectively, and most importantly forever. Providing you maintain a healthy

lifestyle, many clients of 3D Lipo - like Amy have said that the trouble areas never came back. Amy has trained in the 3D Lipo procedure so she can offer it to her customers to change their bodies and lives too. Treatments last no longer than 45 minutes a session.

What happens: 3D Lipo combines cavitation where painless ultrasound breaks down the fat cell membrane - and cryolipolysis or ‘fat freezing’ which triggers ‘cell death’. The destroyed cells are then eliminated by the body’s waste processes. Radio frequency then tightens skin and mechanical

fat rolling improves the appearance of cellulite. Amy is offering a course of eight treatments for £600. To book call 01277 231314 or visit the salon’s website www. amychildsofficial.co.uk. For more information on 3D Lipo visit www/3dlipo.co.uk

THP tip of the week ….. viewings Some estate agents claim that the seller is the best person to show a property to prospective purchasers. However, apart from the inevitable awkwardness of inviting strangers into your home, there are sound reasons why good estate agents prefer to accompany buyers around. When buyers see a property for the first time, they are probably viewing it alongside other properties and simply want to get a feel for its relative suitability in terms of location, layout, size, condition and style. These can all be assessed within the first few minutes.

Ardleigh, Nr Colchester - £299,995 A refurbished semi detached former small holding cottage, located in this semi rural new and EXCLUSIVE GATED DEVELOPMENT. Plot 2 offers a ground floor cloakroom, luxury fitted kitchen, separate utility, en-suite to master bedroom, three garden areas and a double cart lodge.

Vendors are understandably emotive and partial to their own property and tend to go in to too much detail, which can frustrate buyers who simply want to assess the property in principle and move on to the next house. Such a vendor can unwittingly appear desperate to sell.

The agent on the other hand is the “impartial broker” who has an understanding of the buyer’s needs and can use the feedback gained during each viewing to facilitate the decision-making process, leading to strong offers and decisive moves. Children and pets, no matter how sweet they may be, should also be kept out of the way during a viewing, as they can become an unnecessary distraction. Buyers should be focussed - not on the property’s occupants, but on the home itself and what it would be like living there. Our job as good estate agents is to facilitate this in order to secure a speedy sale, with the minimum disruption to our clients. Call us for a free and no obligation valuation of your home and let us explain how we get our clients moved.

Gardening

It’s garden time! The gardening season has officially started and there is plenty happening both in the garden and out of it.

T

HE gardening season has officially started and there is plenty happening both in the garden and out of it. April sees the start of the Love The Plot You’ve Got campaign in garden centres and nurseries around the UK that’s looking to inspire young people to put their outside space to good use and demystify gardening in general www. loveyourplot.com . It’s also the month of the Royal Horticultural Society’s National Gardening Week (13-19 April) that aims to get people of all ages into gardening and horticulture. One of the easiest ways of getting started in gardening is to grow plants, herbs and even vegetables in containers

BOOK

FOCUS

and pots. Gardening myth of the month is that you should add gravel or broken pots in the bottom of containers to help drainage. However, evidence suggests that this is not only a waste of time, but that it also restricts plant growth and results in their roots sitting in water. Soil holds moisture better than gravel does but so long as there is a hole in the bottom of the container, water will find its way out without the need for stones. A plant that likes a well drained soil is the ever popular Rhododendron that flowers at this time of year and brings early colour back to the garden. Don’t worry if your garden doesn’t have the acidic soil that Rhododendrons

need to thrive, as they can be grown in pots, using ericaceous compost, while young. There are over 20,000 registered varieties of Rhododendron. A woody plant, either evergreen or deciduous, most species have showy flowers ranging from brilliant white through to bright pink, vibrant purple and fire orange. Native to Asia the Rhododendron is the national flower of Nepal. In the UK it provides a welcome burst of spring colour and is a favourite of professional gardener and co-presenter of ITV’s Love Your Garden, Frances Tophill, “These stunning and perpetually cheerful shrubs flower in all sorts of vibrant colours during spring when we tend to think of most of the colour coming from bulbs. They extend the flower power of your garden from ground level to head height and beyond and need hardly any pruning. Don’t be fooled into thinking that they provide spring flower and nothing more - most species we buy for the garden are

evergreen so even in the depths of winter their deep, glossy leaves will provide colour. “ April is the perfect time to ‘revisit’ your garden and start getting it ready for the summer months ahead. For seasoned gardeners, this month is one of the busiest in the gardening year. With so much to do, it’s just as well the

days are getting longer and warmer, although there still could be the odd frost around, so be careful about planting out seedlings too soon.

Here are some top jobs for this month from the Royal Horticultural Society and National Garden Gift Vouchers ... 1. P lant evergreen shrubs and pot grown climbers out in the garden 2. T ie back climbing and rambling roses 3. W atch out for sudden frost and fleece plants if necessary 4. K eep an eye out for pests – snails and slugs love new foliage as do aphids 5. Keep weeds under control 6. S tart feeding plants in the garden from now to the end of the summer

7. Start to feed citrus plants 8. S ow seeds directly into the soil so they can flower in the summer 9. S ow vegetable seeds directly into prepared beds 10. Plant summer flowering bulbs 11. Sow new lawns or repair bare patches 12. Prune shrubs and trees 13. A pply mulch or manure to flower beds and pots 14. Prepare hanging baskets 15. Add new plants to ponds

Books Kids Books

The world of children’s books has never been more exciting; with titles continuing to top the book charts and challenge the myth that the paper book is in decline. Although it is true that the Kindle and other such devices did have an initial impact on paper sales for the YA and Adult market, large chains and smaller retailers alike are all reporting a resurgence of paper sales, outstripping the e-book.

B

OOKS for children are different anyway, as the tangible experience of textured pages, pop-ups and the physicality of sitting on the sofa curled up with a book with your child, cannot be beaten with an app. With that in mind, Chicken & Frog’s Natasha Radford suggests her top 5 awesome, interactive books for young children.

Shapes, Xavier Deneux There are four books in this series – Shapes, Opposites, Numbers and Colors. TouchThinkLearn books are in a format unlike any other. Combining scooped-out die-cuts with raised, shaped elements, each book is designed to offer the youngest learners an irresistible opportunity to

explore their universe in a hands-on, multisensory way. They are beautiful.

Bizzy Bear’s Pirate Adventure, Benji Davies

Bizzy Bear is the busiest bear in town! With chunky sliders to push and pull, these robust little board books are perfect for active toddlers. Rich in visual detail and with touches of humour, they are set to become firm favourites in the family library. There’s a whole series to choose from.

Funny Face!, Bahbout & Warren Funny Face! is an activity book in which things aren’t quite what they seem. Inspired by the idea of visual puns, the book allows children to draw, shade, and fold to make surprising and funny things happen to pictures of all kinds of faces. Open a gatefold to make a little boy’s tiny ears become gigantic. Draw pictures on split pages to create faces with different hats, noses, and beards. Turn the pages back and forth to find all the tricks and make all the funny faces.

ATCHING cookery programmes on television, Ian was inspired by Marco Pierre White and from that moment he knew which direction he wanted to go in. A few years later after a period spent at catering college, Ian followed his dream and moved to London where he worked with some of the best chefs in the UK - including Gary Rhodes, Steven Bull, Richard Neat and the man who helped hone his passion for cooking - Marco Pierre White. Ian is now the proud owner of “Come Dine With You”, a private

He also provides cookery lessons and works with charities like Home Start (a family support charity) teaching children how to cook and eat healthily. Russell Grant’s Weekly Horoscopes

W

HILST everyone remembers Russell Grant from his Breakfast TV appearances in the early 1980’s (BBC Breakfast Time and Good Morning Britain), most people don’t realise that Russell was the first astrologer in over 300 years to present a Horoscope Forecast to a member of the Royal Family (HRH Queen Mother). The press later dubbed Russell as the “Royal Astrologer” Russell continues to write his unique and upbeat Horoscope features for over 650+ print titles including Women’s Weekly, Daily Mirror, Sunday Mirror and from this week the loveable celebrity will provide weekly horoscopes for Made in Essex.

What does

future hold?

What you may not know about Russell:

Theatre: After rave reviews nationally for his return to the boards with Alan Ayckbourn, Russell sets up a series of Performance Workshops in association with his charity WISE Communities. Russell recently directed and starred in “A Midsummer Night’s Dream” at the Portmerion Theatre, North Wales which got a Royal Good Luck message from HRH Prince William,The Duke of Cambridge. “You Can Change your life” Book: Having had 78 best sellers since 1984 Russell departed from the usual more populist book to the first book on astrology and psychology. Already declared a masterpiece by other astrologers it gives a brand

the

new insight into this ancient subject. “History of Gloucester”: Following the success of his own non-astrology bestseller, The Real Counties of Britain which was turned into an award winning seven series Russell’s Postcards, the prestigious local government publishers British Publishing Company asked Russell to write his own series of guides. It begins with an in-depth look into the city of Gloucester. The first of a new series of Russell Grant travel guides, next in line are Jamestown Virginia, Wembley, Newport (Wales), Manchester, South Tyrol (Austria/Italy) and Jersey. Special note: A whole chapter is focused on the “tailor of Gloucester” made famous by Beatrix Potter. Gloucester were so impressed with Russell, that he was appointed the official “astrologer to the tailor of Gloucester”. Radio Five Live: Since it first hit the airwaves Russell has been the resident grass roots sports expert on the station. Originally a Wednesday evening show with Julian Worwicker, Russell now appears on all subjects from field hockey

to non league soccer to club cricket whether it is with Colin Murray, Eamonn Holmes or Brian Alexander. Radios 1 and 2: Russell continued to wow the listeners on Monday with his regular Steve Wright slot (BBC Radio 2) and also created special Chris Moyles type horoscopes which the radio superstar used regularly – seeing Russell as “The sexiest astrologer on the planet!” Russell also appeared on Strictly Come Dancing partnered with World Champion Latin dancer, Flavia Cacace. Russell said “Although I went to stage school we never learned to dance, apart from chorus routines, so to learn how to dance properly with the world’s most beautiful and talented Latino Terpsichore, Flavia Cacace, is more than I could ever have wished for”.

Charity Work:

Russell is a committed supporter and ambassador of the Alzheimer’s Society as his grandmother had Alzheimer’s disease, Russell has raised and donated thousands of pounds to the Alzheimer’s Society’s QRD programme to research a cure for dementia. Russell has appeared on The Weakest Link and Celebrity Mastermind to raise funds in to research of dementia and regularly organises cricket tournaments to raise funds for Alzheimer’s Society.

ARIES March 21st - April 20th

CANCER June 22nd - July 23rd

Your domestic world is going through big changes and so is your time honoured daily routine. Getting a different job, relocating to another neighbourhood and hiring domestic help are among the possibilities. It saddens you to let go of certain duties you love, but it can’t be helped. The more flexible you are, the better your household will function. If you’re in a romantic partnership, you will have to work hard to strengthen your union. Treat each other as allies, not adversaries.

You’re tired of being associated with a job or relationship. Making a fresh start will be difficult but rewarding. Build an identity that is based on your values, beliefs and interests. Underplay the work you perform or the role you play in society, especially when meeting new people. It’s possible you will change your name or alter your look in some way. Friends and relatives will be slow to accept this transformation, so be patient. Eventually, they’ll respect your choices.

TAURUS April 21st - May 21st

LEO July 24th - August 23rd

You should slow down and change your priorities. Don’t keep working at a frenzied pace. By cutting down your schedule, you will give your body, mind and spirit time to recover from a very busy period. Instead of filling every spare moment with activity, you’ll take much longer to run errands, prepare meals and fulfil obligations. Don’t hesitate to delegate tasks to colleagues, relatives and roommates. Turn a deaf ear to complaints. You’ve been doing more than your fair share for too long.

A philosophy or religion is no longer giving you the glow you want. It’s a good time to explore something new. You don’t have to commit to any organised school of thought. It may be preferable to cobble several different practices together to form a unique value system. Friends and relatives won’t be very supportive. They want you to stay the same, but it simply isn’t possible. You’ve had some profound realisations that have changed your priorities. Respect your need for spiritual growth.

SAGITTARIUS November 23rd - December 21st

PISCES February 20th - March 20th

A long standing partnership or business arrangement will come to an end and you could be asked to explain the position publicly. The sooner you do this, the better you will feel. It may be helpful to post a polite statement on a social media network to put an end to any groundless speculation. It’s important to be as direct and as straightforward as possible in all dealings. It will cut through any problems and give you space you need to gather your thoughts and acclimatise to the new situation. A comforting routine will come to an end. You tend to be a creature of habit and may not find it easy to be spontaneous. Decide what you want your ideal lifestyle to look like. Be positive; devoting more time to hobbies, sports and loved ones may be more important to you than work. There are some interesting options and opportunities coming your way and the changes you make now will give you more independence and the freedom of action you want to pursue your personal dreams and desires.

Is your training or experience no longer relevant in today’s job market? It’s time to take a refresher course. If you’ve grown tired of your current field, think about changing industries. Entering a rapidly growing area is a good plan. You’ll enjoy working with people who take a radically different approach. Before applying for work, do some background checks into companies needing help. Work for an employer who treats its workers well. Stay away from firms with bad reputations.

GEMINI May 22nd - June 21st

VIRGO August 24th - September 23rd

It’s all right to lose interest in a subject or hobby that used to bring you pleasure. You’re growing and changing. Embrace this evolution. Certain friendships might also fall by the wayside as you move forward. You’re sad to see these ties wither on the vine, but it just isn’t possible to keep all these relationships with so many people meaningful. When it comes to your social life, you will have to be more selective. Let quality, not quantity be your guide when it comes to your social network.

It could be difficult to get paid for a job well done. If you have to file a legal claim to recover this money, do it. Prepare for a lengthy wait. You’ll have to supplement your income with freelance work or odd jobs. This means cutting back on luxuries. This period of financial restraint will work in your favour. You’re about to learn a valuable lesson about what is truly important in life. You don’t need a lot of expensive merchandise to be happy. All you require are loyal friends.

LIBRA September 24th - October 23rd

CAPRICORN December 22nd - January 20th

SCORPIO October 24th - November 22nd

AQUARIUS January 21st - February 19th

Goals you once held dear no longer seem so important. You want to move in a new direction but feel inhibited or restricted. Don’t be afraid to take a different path. Cynics will tease you for being fickle, but they’re just projecting their own dissatisfaction onto you. You are too smart to waste time on unrewarding activities. If you don’t have enough money to enjoy a particular sport or hobby, find a less expensive diversion. Fortunately, you’ve always been very flexible.

A career path that once held lots of promise is starting to look like a dead end. You may decide to enter a different field or take some time off work altogether. Spending more time at home will be surprisingly rewarding. Your family doesn’t value you for the strengths you have at work. Instead of strong leadership, they want you to be kind and compassionate. It will take time and patience to switch gears, but you can do it. Treat the experience like training for a new job.

A source of financial help will come to an end, putting you in a difficult situation. It’s time to become economically independent if you can. Relying on others will put undue strain on your relationships. Getting new qualifications or adding to your experience can improve your job prospects. Alternatively, work as an apprentice or take an internship. Hands on experience is invaluable. Once you land a new job, use your first paycheque to repay a loan. It will be a profound relief to fulfil this obligation.

‘Mazda’s ‘Kodo’ design theme, which gave us such models as the Mazda5 and CX-5 is very much in evidence’

Nothing old from Mazda

M

AZDA can lay claim to having one of the newest car range of manufacturers, as the oldest car in its range, the Mazda3, was only introduced 13 months ago. Joining the succession of recently-introduced models is the Mazda2, which goes on sale this month and this 16-strong line-up pitches this supermini into a market crowded with competitors from all the major makers such as the Ford Fiesta, VW Polo and Vauxhall Corsa. Mazda’s ‘Kodo’ design theme, which gave us such models as the Mazda5 and CX-5 is very much in evidence, and wears a more-striking pointed front grille that is different to the rest of the Mazda range. Available in five grades of SE, SE-L, SE-L Nav, Sport and top of the range Sport Nav, engine choice is one petrol engine of 1.5-litres in power outputs of 75, 90, and 115PS and one diesel of the same capacity with 105PS of power, all of them Euro6 emission compliant.

By

CHRIS MANNING Mazda’s SKYACTIV technology is used throughout the vehicle and technology features a lot in the Mazda2 with a 7-inch touchscreen, MZD Connect smartphone connectivity, DAB radio, rotary Multimedia infotainment control system and for the first time in a B-segment supermini a head-up display on the highend models. Standard equipment on the base model includes electric door mirrors, daytime running lights, height adjustable driver’s seat, rake and reach adjustable steering wheel, trip computer and steering wheel audio controls. Air con is also standard along with AM/FM radio and CD player with USB and AUX connection, remote central locking, power front windows and engine stop/start button. Comprehensive safety packages as standard include hill hold assist, dynamic stability control, traction

control, tyre pressure monitoring system, ABS and EBD and emergency stop signalling. Prices start at £11,995 for the SE, which is only available with 75PS petrol engine and rise to the Sport Nav at £15,995, the sole model to get the more powerful 115PS petrol powerplant. Cheapest diesel is the SE-L at £15,995 rising to £17,395 for the Sport Nav. This 105PS oil-burner has a low CO2 figure of just 89g/km. First drive of the day was behind the wheel of the 90PS petrol in Sport trim. This had the optional Light Stone cream leather trim (£800) and certainly brightens up the whole interior and with the detailed stitching certainly gave the Mazda2 a very classy feel. Ride and handling were good, but the 90PS engine lacked a bit of get-up-andgo, not helped by the big gap between second and third gears meant that if you changed up too quickly on a steep incline it failed to respond and second gear had to be reselected.

TEST DRIVE

Next was the 115PS petrol in Sport Nav guise. This was the best of the bunch of the petrolengined Mazda2’s on offer and came with another piece of safety kit, the Lane Departure Warning System. Discreet in operation, there is none of the steering wheel vibration encountered on other cars I have driven with this system. Instead an orange light flashes on the dashboard, accompanied by a humming sound eminating

from somewhere in the dashboard and reminded me of the feedback noise you get when plugging a guitar into an amplifier. Last to drive was the diesel, which I have to say was my pick of the bunch. With a power output of 105PS matched with a torque figure of 220Nm, it gets on with the job in a fuss-free way, and looking at the stats of all the models produces the best set of figures, with a combined official mpg figure

35

Mazda2

of 81mpg, CO2 of just 89g/km, only loosing out slightly in the 0-60 stakes with a time of 10.1 seconds, which is only bettered by the most powerful petrol engine at 8.7 seconds. Mazda are offering a special launch edition of the Mazda2, based on the 90PS petrol Sport model, which is priced at £14,995 and is available under a PCP (Personal Contract Purchase) plan with £750 deposit and monthly payment of £199.

A full body-colour paint finish is now standard, and the large 3D hexagonal singleframe grille dominating the front of the car is flanked by double-arrow design Xenon plus headlights with LED daytime running lights in SE models or all-weather LED units in the S line. New design alloy wheels with a 19-inch diameter are part of the SE specification, while S line versions upgrade to a 20-inch wheel. Powered tailgate operation is also part of the package for both versions. Inside the cabin, which in UK specification models features three rows of seats upholstered

in leather, headroom has increased for both front and second row passengers. The second seating row now benefits from a tilt and fold function, and when the two seats in the third row aren’t being used, they can now be more easily folded away to make room for luggage thanks to a new powered folding mechanism. Up in the front row the latest MMI navigation plus with MMI Touch – the range-topping system based on the second generation modular infotainment platform - brings a wealth of media within easily accessible reach helped by its MMI all‑in‑touch control unit with large touchpad and 8.3-inch electrically retractable monitor. Access to Audi connect, which brings internetbased services to the car via a fast 4G connection and also creates a mobile Wi-Fi hotspot enabling occupants to go online using handheld devices, is also included. Powering the new Q7 from launch is an EU6compliant 3.0 TDI engine producing 272 PS and 600Nm of torque, in combination with an eightspeed tiptronic transmission with a fuel-saving freewheeling function, and quattro all-wheel drive.

Podium places at Goodwood MALDON-based historic race car preparation experts JD Classics capped off an extremely successful 73rd Goodwood Members’ Meeting with two podium finishes with a second-place for its Rover 3500 SD1 and third for its Lola T70 Spyder. The Rover, driven by JD Classics’ own Chris Ward and journalist Chris Harris, started from the back of the grid, after having to retire from Saturday’s qualifying race due to a slight vibration. Nevertheless, the team’s expert engineers worked through the night to fix it and in Sunday’s race, the Rover overtook thirteen cars on the first three laps to take it up to tenth. Following a lightning-quick driver change, the Rover SD1, now with Chris Ward at the wheel, continued to hunt down first place. With just minutes left on the clock it was in second, held

up by slower moving traffic ahead. On the final lap, Ward was gaining on the Chevrolet Camaro of British Touring Car driver Matt Neal but the chequered flag came before he had a chance to make his move. In the Bruce McLaren Trophy race Alex Buncombe took to the track in the JD Classics Lola T70 Spyder. This race for 1960’66 Can-Am sports cars was perhaps the loudest of the day, and one of the most exhilarating to watch. Buncombe got off to a good start but the Chinook Mk2 of Jay

Esterer and Lola T70 of Nicholas Padmore proved just out of reach. The JD Classicsprepared Connaught A-Type, once raced by Sir Stirling Moss, ran consistently in the Hawthorn Trophy amongst a competitive field of 1950s front-engined Formula 1 cars, including Maserati 250Fs and an Aston Martin DBR4. JD Classics’ hugely successful race preparation team is just one part of the company’s wider business, which also includes worldbeating Concours restorations.

The new Audi Q7

From rest, 62 mph takes a mere 6.5 seconds, and a top speed of 145 mph is possible. CO2 emissions are rated at 153g/km, based on a combined fuel consumption figure of 47.9mpg. A 218PS version of the 3.0 TDI quattro will be available later in the year. The Audi drive select adaptive dynamics system is networked with the engine and transmission, enabling the driver to alter their operating characteristics across five driving modes – auto, comfort, efficiency, dynamic or individual. The feel of the electromechanical steering can also be influenced by this system, as can the optional adaptive air suspension system, which

Electric success

LESS than one year from launch the Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV has now overtaken every other plug-in hybrid and pure electric car to become the UK’s favourite plug-in vehicle. By the end of March, sales of the Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV will have passed the 10,000 mark. Mitsubishi Motors’ UK Managing Director, Lance Bradley said: “This is certainly a satisfying achievement for us but more significantly it is an indication that this newly developing market is beginning to decide which electric vehicle technology delivers the right balance of low emission driving, value for money, economy and practicality.” Mitsubishi’s Outlander Plug-in electric vehicle (PHEV) has transformed the plug-in market. The Outlander PHEV has an allelectric range of up to 32.5 miles and phenomenal economy and environmental credentials. It emits just 44g/km of CO2 and the official combined fuel consumption figure is 148mpg. And, critically, it is available at the same price to the customer as the equivalent specification Outlander diesel.

also adds an allroad and lift/offroad function to increase ground clearance by 25mm and 60mm respectively. Numerous innovative driver assistance systems for the new Q7 are also available, including an evolution of adaptive cruise control with stop & go incorporating a traffic jam assistant that can take over steering duties on marked roads if traffic is moving at below 37mph, and the groundbreaking predictive efficiency assistant. In collaboration with adaptive cruise control (ACC) and traffic sign recognition, the system adapts the preselected speed to the route and the speed limits.

Jazz crowned most reliable for fourth year running THE Honda Jazz has been crowned most reliable car in the fourth annual Carbuyer Awards. Bigger than last year, due to an increased number of categories, the 2015 Carbuyer Awards focused on what buyers actually search for on the popular website when researching a car purchase, with reliability a significant factor in the decision-making process. Now in its fourth year, the Carbuyer Awards pulls its winners from reviews and feedback from thousands of car owners, making the awards a true representation of UK driver sentiment. The Jazz was first launched in the UK 13 years ago in 2002 and has sold almost 310,000 since then. This summer sees the next generation Jazz arrive in the UK which promises to continue the

proven reputation for reliability, value for money, style and sophistication. Stuart Milne, Editor of Carbuyer, commented “The Honda Jazz really does live up to its reputation for being built to last; meaning unscheduled visits to the garage should be few and far between.” Philip Crossman, Managing Director of Honda UK, said: “We pride ourselves on the reliability of all our cars and work hard to deliver an outstanding Honda experience from the purchasing stage right to the end of the cars life. “It is important to us that we keep to the promise we make of excellence and demonstrate our commitment ensuring that we continue to build reliable cars and always exceeding the expectations of our customers.”

Alice seals title

BILLERICAY’S Alice Green stormed to her second English National squash title on Sunday adding the Under-15 crown to the U-13 prize she bagged a year ago. Alice from Billericay, powered through five rounds of action at the championships in Birmingham before lifting the title in front of a sell-out crowd. “Alice was incredibly focused throughout the tournament as was by far the strongest player there,” said her coach Paul Selby, who was in Alice’s corner during the entire event. After a testing 3-1 semi-final win over Karina Tyma, Alice, who is not 14 until next month, faced Northumberland’s Laura Neill in the final. Alice’s power-game dipped slightly although she still had enough in hand to roll out a 3-0 victory.

CHAMPIONS

EOPARDS became National Basketball League champions for the second time in four years on Sunday as they defeated Team Northumbria 84-72, on Sunday. In front of a sold-out Brentwood Centre crowd, Robert Youngblood’s team beat the only side who could deny them the title to spark jubilant scenes on the court at the end of the game. “It’s an amazing achievement” said general manager Dave Ryan. “A year ago we sat everyone down in a room and discussed whether we could continue this club. “But everyone’s

stepped up, and winning the league again is an amazing achievement. “We had fans lugging chairs around to pack more fans into the Brentwood

Centre, and that was just a snap-shot of the amount of work that’s gone into winning this. “When we won the treble in 2012 we did it by bringing in two of the best Americans

this league has seen for a long time, but this season we did it with a real team effort and I think that showed on Sunday. “We couldn’t have won this without the

help of Brentwood Leisure Trust or the support of our fans. “It’s fitting, and brilliant, that we won it at the Brentwood Centre.” Captain Albert

Margai led from the front in a game that Big Cats led for all bar 90 seconds with 22 points, six assists and five rebounds while American forward Byron Richards had his best game of the season with a 22 point, ten rebound doubledouble. Brentwood-boy Will Ashby shrugged off foul trouble to finish with 15 points, four assists and three rebounds, while Dave Ajumobi added six boards to his nine points. The side wrap up their league campaign in Manchester on Saturday before hosting a home playoff quarter-final at the Brentwood Centre on Sunday, April 12.

WALKING FOOTBALL

Enjoying the beautiful game again, slowly

A

NEW sport is giving a new lease of life to football players who have reached a stage in life where they find the rigour of the conventional game a physical challenge, but still want to be involved in a game the still have a passion for. Walking Football, is a sloweddown version of the beautiful game and ever since a Barclays TV advert hit the screens last year, the sport has grown and there already around 225 clubs registered across the country, with more springing up every week. Locally, Chelmsford Walking Football Club was formed in September 2012 and recently has joined forces with the town’s football team to become Chelmsford City Walking Football Club. The club meets for sessions at the Chelmsford Sports & Athletics Centre at Melbourne Park, Salerno Way, every Tuesday and Thursday at 11am for sessions, either inside the sports centre or when the weather is warmer the multi-use games area at Melbourne Park. It is aimed at the over 50’s but there is no age limit as to who can play and it is a great way to

exercise, improve skills, meet likeminded footballer and slap on some White Horse Oil to bring those memories of past days! The rules are very similar to the standard game, with six a side, running is not allowed on or off the ball and free kicks are awarded for any infringement. Tackling has to be of a ‘gentle’ nature with no sliding or behind tackles allowed. The first tournament they entered was held in Surrey and they competed with teams from Wimbledon, Epsom and Croydon. This was followed by their own competition in September 2014 held at Chelmsford Sport & Athletics Centre. They entered two teams of sixa-side and came second out of six teams and would have won if their B-team had not beaten the A-team! They next played a tournament at Shooters Football Club in North Weald in aid of Children In Need. They entered three teams and helped to raise over £300 for the charity. Chelmsford Walking Football has grown in numbers and currently have a squad of 35 players and they regularly get 22 or so at their weekly sessions.

Organiser Bob Willis, from Broomfield, said: “After playing in my early days for Autel and Old Chelmsfordians I wanted to back to playing, and Walking Football has been the ideal way. “It is a great way for us seniors to keep fit and have fun as well.

“It gets competitive, but if you have played football at any level, that goes with the game.’’ “Some of our members have pacemakers fitted and undergone operations but still wanted to exercise and this is pefect, gentle way for them to achieve it.’’

“All of them have got the green light from their doctors and approve of this way of exercising.’’ To find out more, contact Bob Willis or Terry Buck on info@ chelmsfordwalkingfootball.co.uk or log onto website chelmsfordwalkingfootball. co.uk
