Wanted: Foster parents C HILDREN of all ages need a loving home to feel safe and secure and family to nurture them into adulthood. Essex needs more foster parents, to ensure those who are unable to live with their birth families are also guaranteed this care and commitment. Children and young adults end up in care for a variety of reasons, because of illness or crisis in the family or because they have experienced abuse or neglect. Essex County Council currently places approximately 400 children a year in

foster homes. They are keen to hear from anyone interested in fostering children over eight years old, some with complex needs or disabilities and sibling groups. Some will need fostering for a short time until they can hopefully return home, while others will need a longer term placement. There are lots of misconceptions about who can and can’t foster, but the criteria is very simple. You need to be over 21, married or single or living with a partner of either gender and have a healthy lifestyle. You must have some experience

of children and/or young people and you or your partner must be able to care for a child before and after school as well as provide transport to and from school and family contact. Time to attend daytime training sessions and meet with social workers is also a necessity. Space will be needed in the family home for a bedroom for the child and importantly, everyone in the household, including your own children will want to make it work. Essex County Council are holding a number of fostering events throughout the

Dr.Winifred van Rensburg

county during the year. These events are run by their recruitment team and give potential fosterers an opportunity to meet experienced foster carers and social workers. The next event is on Monday, April 27, at County Hotel, Rainsford Road, Chelmsford. CM1 2PZ at 7pm and in Harlow on Tuesday, April 28. Financial assistance is available for foster carers and can be up to £780 per week based advanced level caring for two children. To book a place call 0800 801 530 or visit essex.gov.uk/fostering.

TRAINING PROGRAMME

Apprentice path turns out to be right move

A

S PART of its expansion strategy, Beresfords is investing in future employees and expanding its apprenticeship programme by continuing to hire apprentices. Beresfords has been offering the government-backed scheme since 2010 where apprentices train for 12 months, combining work-based training with hands on experience. Upon completing the Estate Agency Apprenticeship pathway, successful candidates receive the nationally recognised NVQ Level 2 qualification, as well as a Certificate and Diploma in either Residential Property or Residential Property Lettings & Management and a full time employment contract. Three of Beresfords’ success stories are Shaun Bull, Domani

SCHOOL PROJECT

Pupils’ mock election THIRTEEN of Moulsham High School’s Year 12 students recently took it upon themselves to find out what their peers’ views were towards politics by holding a mock election that was open to the whole Sixth Form and staff and used props kindly loaned by Chelmsford City Council. The students produced a summary of some of the main policies put forward in the parties’ premanifestos and presented it to the various form groups in order to inform their voting. Much to the delight of the Year 12 students who organised the event, the turnout was surprisingly high. That 81% of Year 12 students voted in the Moulsham mock general election was a remarkable achievement, witnessing a turnout that saw 104 of the 129 opting to vote. Just ten of those 104 ticked the ‘None of the Above’ option that was included on the ballot slips, alongside the Conservatives, Labour, Greens, UKIP and Liberal Democrats, to identify genuine political apathy where possible instead of assuming that people simply didn’t wish to vote. While the outcome of the mock election, in regards to which party won, wasn’t a priority, it was interesting to note that the Greens scooped a 37.4% majority which would mean that they would have to form a coalition or minority government if they are to serve in government. Labour came second with 31% of the vote while the Conservatives came third with just 17.6% of the vote. The Liberal Democrats came last with just 4.2%with UKIP finishing slightly ahead, recording 9.6% of the vote. The students achieved their aim – people voted and seemed engaged with the idea of putting their views forward. In summary, it shows that the electorate must recognise that the only way in which they can have a say in the future of the country, is by voting and the Moulsham High School students hope that the UK electorate takes this on board come May 7.

O’Mahoney and Brandon Crouchman. The former apprentices are now employed full-time at Beresfords’ Chelmsford and Brentwood branches and Head Office, respectively. Neither Brandon nor Domani had previously considered working in property prior to applying to be an apprentice. Brandon, who is 19 and part of the marketing team, was deterred from university because of the high tuition fees and wanted to find a profession which allowed him to get straight onto a payroll. Meanwhile, 20-year-old Domani went as far as being accepted into university before deciding to explore other options that allowed her to gain on-the-job experience. Since completing her

apprenticeship last October, the Trainee Negotiator has continued to study for NVQ Level 3 in order to become a part of the National Association of Estate Agents. In contrast, Shaun, a 22-year-old Senior Negotiator, always wanted to work in property. Having grown up in Writtle near the town’s local branch, Shaun turned down opportunities in other companies to pursue a career with Beresfords. Paul Beresford, Managing Director/Chairman at Beresfords, said: “Our apprenticeship scheme has been hugely successful in attracting bright, young, talented people to the profession. We are delighted to be expanding the programme this year and currently have three roles available across the company.”

HAVERING COLLEGE

Building sound career foundations CONSTRUCTION industry experts have helped students at Havering College of Further and Higher Education to lay the foundations for successful and rewarding careers. Four specialists visited the college’s Rainham Campus Construction Centre in New Road, Rainham, to share their knowledge and give guidance on how to maximise chances when seeking a job or apprenticeship. The visitors were: Stephen Blake, a designer craftsman at Jungle Joinery, with more than 30 years of ‘hands on’ carpentry experience; Leroy Joseph,

BEING in chronic pain all the time makes you on edge and when you shuffle through a shop like a duracell bunny I have heard people say ‘drunkard he must be on something’ and ‘he should not be out on his own’.” These are the harrowing words spoken by John, 51, from Braintree who suffers from Parkinson’s. John is just one of an estimated 69,000 people in the UK who have experienced hostility and rudeness from members of the public because they are unaware he is suffering from this incurable condition which causes him to slur his speech and be unsteady on his feet. “Because of this I rarely venture far on my own,” John explains. “Thankfully I am surrounded by family and good friends and I try to only go to places where people know me. I do not want to be made special, just a bit of understanding and patience - fumbling through a pocket of change is no picnic when you have Parkinson’s.” This week is Parkinson’s Awareness Week. Many of us will recognise Jane Asher, who is president of Parkinson’s UK. Jane talks to Made in Essex about why she decided to support the charity. “My brother-in-law was diagnosed with Parkinson’s about fifteen years ago and was my original inspiration for joining Parkinson’s UK,” she says. “I have

supported and worked with them ever since.” Over the years Jane has experienced first hand the pain and struggles that living with this devastating condition can entail. “I was shocked by the enormous number of people with Parkinson’s who regularly come up against public misunderstanding and unintentional cruelty - a third of people in a recent survey revealed they were stared at, a quarter had their symptoms mistaken for drunkeness and one in ten have been laughed at because of their symptoms. “This hostility can have a profound effect on people with Parkinson’s increasing their depression and anxiety and leaving some people too frightened to leave their homes.” Jane is urging people to become friendlier by pledging to do small acts of kindness such as smiling and being more patient. Jane Asher “In particular we ask people not to make assumptions or jump to conclusions that can make an enormous difference to all of us - especially people with Parkinson’s,” adding: “I do hope you will join me in pledging to make a difference.” For more information on Parkinson’s Awareness Week visit upyourfriendly.com. HAVERING COLLEGE in Hornchurch is going through the final phase of rehearsals ready for their West End production of Rock Opera Godspell. The college is staging the timeless classic at Her Majesty’s Theatre in Haymarket on Sunday May 3. The cast of 70-plus singers, musicians and performers aged six upwards which also includes performers with learning or physical challenges, will perform musical numbers ranging from Day By Day and Oh Bless The Lord My Soul to the soul searching lyrics of By My Side and On The Willows. Director/producer Peter Dayson, who lectures in Music at Havering College said: “Godspell is a huge challenge but our production is

coming together really well. The original cast in the 1970s included David Essex as Jesus and Jeremy Irons as Judas - our production may also create some new stars. “This is the ninth Havering College CrossOver Project (involving schools and learning organisations from Havering) and it will be the second time we have staged Godspell. Our community shows are unique and award winning. We are very much hoping in the future to take this project abroad. Taking part is a life-changing experience for the young people who get involved in these shows.” For further information on Godspell call Peter Dayson on 01708 462740 or email boxoffice@ havering-college.ac.uk.

Primary school Going the extra mile for Saint Francis Hospice preferences met Local recruitment consultant prepares for Sunday’s London Marathon MORE than 17 in 20 children in Essex have been offered their parents’ first preference primary school. Despite significant growth of the country and increasing pressure on places, Essex County Council has confirmed that 86.7 per cent of children due to start reception in 2015 have been offered their first preference, while 6.6 per cent have been given their second. That means 93.3 per cent of applicants have been given their first or second preference - in line with last year. Chris Kiernan, Essex County Council’s Interim Director for Commissioning: Education and Lifelong Learning said: “I am delighted we have once again been able to offer the vast majority of children their parents’ first preference primary school, despite the growing pressure on places. This achievement is a further demonstration of the continued investment we are making in creating additional primary school places, as well as the hard work and dedication of schools and admissions staff.”

worker, Sharon, said the role has given Austen the confidence and independence he needs to live a normal, happy life. Sales Director at Borough, David Brereton, said Austen’s success proves that people with learning disabilities can be capable employees and companies should embrace their potential for work: “From the moment we met Austen he had a real impact on all of us, his enthusiasm and spirit was inspiring and really quite humbling. “Why should his learning disability stop him from getting the chances everybody else gets? He has made a real difference in the factory, his work is to the highest standard, he is supportive of others, friendly and motivated, a model employee. “As part of the automotive supply chain, we are under tremendous pressure to hit targets, achieve quality standards and keep costs down. It’s easy to forget the difference a business like ours can make to the people who work within

it and I urge more businesses to give people like Austen a chance to fulfil their potential.” Austen was originally taken on at Borough for one-day-a-week but made such an impact he was quickly offered a full-time position, five-days-a-week. His main duties include packing components into specially designed transport containers, working with the injection moulding teams and helping keep the machines clean. From an early age he had suffered with VCFS and only started speaking when he was five-years-old. Having attended a specialist school for children with learning difficulties, his autism was, incredibly, only diagnosed earlier this year. Sharon, who met Austen through her work with Social Services, said his role with Borough has made the world of difference to Austen and his family: “His job at Borough has been absolutely fantastic for his confidence, he now feels in control and has a great sense of independence.”

PHOENIX FM PRESENTER OF THE WEEK

Music is most definitely the best Sound Wave

I

WOULD describe Steph’s Sound Wave as a little piece of me and in that respect totally random!” says Phoenix FM presenter Stephanie Cawthorne. The 22-year-old University of Portsmouth graduate has presented a show on Phoenix since September 2014 after her driving instructor and fellow Phoenix DJ Gary Casserley who presents A Journey Through the Years in Music every Monday on the station, recommended her to Chairman Paul Golder. “I met up with Paul, arranged to have training on a Saturday and was doing my show, Steph’s Sound Wave, on the Sunday. I have only really developed a format for my show in the last three months but it is heavily reliant on music and gives me an outlet to chat about anything,” she says. Steph from Rayleigh studied American Studies at Portsmouth and since graduating last summer has been working hard to save up money to travel to Australia this September for a year to work, explore and visit friends and family. “Travelling is a huge part of who I am and I don’t know when I will stop, maybe when I’ve seen the world.” With travel one of her favourite hobbies, radio too is something she is passionate about. “I haven’t always worked in radio but I’d love to make it my career one day,” Steph explains. “I spent time doing TV and radio on top of my degree

CARE IN THE COMMUNITY

Super volunteer scores for local community

R

ETIRED super-volunteer Ann Davis from Chelmsford has spent the past seven years helping to build up an exercise facility for a local MS (Multiple Sclerosis) group. Last year Ann, a Join In Local Leader, part of a network of volunteers that work with Join, a London 2012 charity that puts more volunteers into community sport, met Paralympic Boccia bronze medalist, Dan Bentley and has been working with him to introduce the sport to the group. Boccia is very similar to boules or petanque, a game played widely in France and other European countries. Ann soon discovered that no matter what the exercise group members’ physical limitations were, they all Dan Bentley with Ann

found that they were able to take part. Ann said: Everyone was so enthused by this great game that Dan helped us to get hold of a second hand set of Boccia balls. A few weeks later he showed us a range of games we could play as individuals or as teams and since then we’ve played almost every week.” Ann discovered that the local Brentwood group also started playing Boccia and now plans to set up a Boccia league. She adds: I can’t thank Dan Bentley enough. He introduced us to this game and has inspired a group of people to become involved in a grassroots sport. Maybe our group won’t become elite sports men and women, but they are now regular participants in a great game.

at University, but my real passion for it didn’t develop until 2nd year when I managed to secure a weekly show on Queen Alexandra Hospital radio in Cosham.” A stint in the US also saw her gaining valuable experience. “When I travelled to the US to study at the State University of New York in Brockport in 2013, I got the opportunity to become the news girl on the university radio station, 98.1 The Point, which was a massive step up as it was an FM station and I was responsible for writing, producing and reporting the news every Monday morning from 6am to 9am and then again on a Thursday at 5.30pm.” Back in Essex, Steph loves what local radio brings to the community and how it highlights homegrown talent and business. “It’s so versatile and allows us as presenters to produce and broadcast a piece of what we are interested in to the listeners. I love being part of the Phoenix family,” she says. When not DJ’ing Steph is a huge TV and film buff and when not at the gym or at work she admits to catching up on every ‘talked about’ series she can. “Netflix is my best friend,” she reveals. So what can listeners expect when tuning in to her two hour show? “I want them to either discover new music, delight in listening to some throwback tunes, or laugh at my ramblings and my occasional fluff ups.” Having described herself on her Twitter page as an ‘aspiring professional talker on Phoenix FM,’ ramblings or no ramblings, Steph will keep you tuned in every Sunday. Tune into Stephanie on Phoenix 98.0FM Sundays from 2-4pm, phoenixfm.com.

Canine Carers Imaging caring for 17,000 dogs a year across a huge network of 20 rehoming centres. That’s just what the Dogs Trust do.

F

OUNDED in 1891 it was previously known as the National Canine Defence League until 2003. Since then, the Dogs Trust has gone on to become the UK’s largest dog welfare charity. Just some of the tireless work it carries out includes:

• Running subsidised neutering campaigns in areas of the UK with the most acute stray dog problems. • Has a team of Education and Community Officers providing thousands of classroom presentations every year. Free teaching resources are made available to all schools in the UK. • Runs the FREEDOM Project which helps pet owners who are fleeing domestic violence by fostering their animals while they start a new life. • Offers access to the HOPE Project which provides preventative veterinary care to dogs belonging to homeless people. • Advises the government on any matters concerning dog ownership. • Has established a charity in Ireland that runs a rehoming centre in Dublin. • Assists overseas animal welfare charities by training their staff in best practice. Dogs Trust Basildon opened last year and became the charity’s 19th rehoming centre. From Yorkshire Terriers to Sharpei’s and Lurcher’s to Bichon’s, 548 dogs of all shapes and sizes have been rehomed since it opened its doors nine months ago. Dogs Trust goes to huge lengths in order to rehabilitate the dogs in need of a little extra help and the Essex

Rehoming Centre is no different. A pleasant environment and visitor experience means a visit to the centre is a million miles away from some of the out-dated visions people have of rescue centres. Set in 14 acres, there’s 69 glass fronted kennels with under floor heating; a dedicated Training and Rehabilitation Centre, full vet and surgical suite; Hydrotherapy room; exercise paddocks; Training Hall, Grooming Suite and a team of 41 members of staff. Already there have been some stand-out stories from the centre demonstrating that the rehoming process really does work: Rocky an 11 year old Staffordshire Terrier was brought in after his owner sadly passed away. The owner had taken out a canine care card, a unique free service that gives owners the peace of mind knowing that Dogs Trust will care for your dogs if you pass away before they do. When Rocky arrived, it quickly became clear that he was suffering from Arthritis. He was made as comfy as possible helped by the underfloor heating in

his kennel which kept him nice and warm. He was also indulged in lots of cuddles by the staff, needless to say he become a firm favourite very quickly! Six weeks after he arrived he was adopted by a lovely gentleman who was looking for a companion and we’re delighted to hear that Rocky has settled in brilliantly and he and his new

owner have been inseparable ever since. Betty – an eight week old Springer/ Labrador cross puppy came in after the centre received a call from a vet about an accidental litter a customer had had. Her pregnant mum came into the Wickford-based rehoming centre and headed onto the ‘maternity wing’ – an area designed specifically for expectant mums. Just two weeks later 11 puppies, including Betty, made their arrival.

Meet the team: Karina Grimwade – 30 years old. Karina is the volunteer co-ordinator and is responsible for the team of 90 volunteers, their recruitment, training and task management. She has previously managed a team of 200 people at a call centre for customer service but gave up her life by the sea and moved back in with her mum so that she could come and work within animal welfare. She has two rescued Jack Russell Terriers which adds to her mum’s brood of five dogs, three cats, a tortoise and a fish!! She loves all dogs of every shape and size, especially the waifs and strays. Rob Lewsley – 30 year olds, canine carer – Worked in haulage logistics for seven years but always felt a pull towards working with animals. He secured a voluntary placement at a wildlife rescue centre in Thailand working with neglected animals which cemented the idea that he wanted to make his

All of the puppies headed off to their new homes and their mum, after being neutered, was returned to her family. Sadly though Betty came back to Dogs Trust Basildon as her new family were slightly unprepared for her puppy traits. But this was to the advantage of her new owners who met, and fell instantly in love with her. Betty is now loving her rural home in the Essex countryside with lots of long walks and cuddles! Goose – A 10 month old black Labrador was found as a stray but she was one of the rehoming centre’s very first dogs, arriving before it had even officially opened and was a popular lady from the start. She was then one of the first dogs to be rehomed and was adopted by a family with teenage children who are providing lots of mental and physical stimulation to use up her endless energy reserves! The Trust relies on the kind generosity of the public to make their inspirational work and these rehoming stories become a reality. So, if you love dogs, please make a donation today. For information on Dogs Trust Basildon call 0300 303 0292 or visit them at Dogs Trust Essex, Nevendon Road, Wickford, Essex, SS12 0FH. www.dogstrust.org.uk

career working with animals. So when he returned to the UK he faced the fear, quit his job and returned to his studies before coming to work for Dogs Trust. His dissertation at university looked into how environmental enrichment could benefit animals and he played classical music to chickens for two months! He says this has come in very handy now that he needs to keep dogs entertained all day. Rob has a rescue Belgian Malinois who has his own challenges which has helped Rob’s understanding of the needs a rescue dog requires. Louise Moran – 44 years old – Operations Manager – Is responsible for 25 canine carers and the overall welfare of the dogs, making sure they are healthy, happy and enriched. In her previous life she was a boiler engineer before finding her way to animal welfare. She worked at the Trust’s Harefield centre in West London and Salisbury in Dorset as a canine carer before moving to Essex. She has a Lurcher that she rehomed from Dogs Trust Harefield who is currently attending hydrotherapy at the Basildon centre.

Brooklands Hotel A

The Brooklands Hotel is situated in an area of Surrey that is steeped in history. It was once the location of the Brooklands race circuit, the first purpose-built racing track built in 1907 and in more recent times more of Concorde was built at Brooklands than at any other manufacturing site, CHRIS MANNING pays it a visit.

LTHOUGH cars whizzing around the track may be a distant memory, the nod to Brooklands motoring heritage remains firmly intact with four super-suites recently refurbished and renamed paying homage to Brooklands racing greats of the past; Kay Petre, Noel Pope, Percy Lambert and Selwyn Edge. In June 1907 shortly after the track opened, Selwyn Edge was the first racing driver to break the 24-hour distance record in a Napier Six, a classic racing car of its time. Perhaps fitting then, the Selwyn Edge Suite was our accommodation for an overnight stay in the contemporary 131-room hotel which opened in 2010. Comprising lounge, dining and desk area and large bedroom with en-suite shower and bathroom, decor was rather masculine with earthy tones and contemporary furnishings. Floor to ceiling windows

and an extensive private balcony afforded panoramic views of the neighbouring Mercedes-Benz World race track and complex. The 1907 Restaurant Bar & Grill, offers a memorable dining experience. Wooden floors, leather sofas and plenty of dark wood set the scene perfectly for a gourmet treat of dishes cooked using local and seasonal produce. Cream leek and potato soup was an excellent starter, served in a distinctive shaped bowl, followed by a main course of traditional Sunday roast beef. My partner opted for the Pressed Ham Hock with pistachio and Rosemary Roasted Leg of Cornish Lamb. Dessert deserves a special mention: the profiteroles were superb.

With plenty of rest and relaxation and good food to be had, an added bonus for those who like to be spoilt rotten was the extensive BSpa complex which offers eight treatment rooms for massages, body and

As runners descend from every corner of the globe to take part in the London Marathon this Sunday 26 April, those with a slightly more leisurely run in mind may be inspired to try one of the following running tours during a city break. It’s a great way of taking in the sights too.

Best foot forward FLORENCE RUNNING TOUR

Florence, known as the Cradle of the Renaissance, is home to a brand new one hour running tour from Viator, which takes in the city’s awe-inspiring architec-ture and attractions.

Runners will cover 5.3 miles and take in some of Florence’s most iconic landmarks, including the Duomo, Giotto’s Bell Tower and the Piazzale Michelangelo terrace. The tour caters for a maximum of eight guests,

ensuring everyone receives personalised attention from the knowledgeable guide. From £14.75 per person.

MADRID RUNNING TOUR

Exercise whilst seeing the sights of Madrid on this

small-group running tour, led by a local fitness-expert guide. The one and half hour workout is set at the pace of the group’s slowest runner, meaning nobody gets left behind. The tour is flexible and includes five itineraries at different times

of the day. Jog at a leisurely pace around town and absorb Madrid’s attractions, including the Royal Palace and Temple of Debod. Alternatively, escape the city crowds with a run around Madrid’s tranquil city parks, Buen Retiro Park or Casa de Campo. From £18.44 per person.

ROME RUNNING TOUR

Experience the majesty of Rome whilst jogging around the city’s sights on this small-group, one hour running tour, led by a local guide. Aimed at regular run-ners who are comfortable running at a moderate pace, the four mile route passes iconic city landmarks such as the Trevi Fountain, the Pantheon,

Spanish Steps and Piazza Bavona. From £21.39 per person.

COPENHAGEN RUNNING TOUR

The Copenhagen running tour enables runners to explore the chic capital, which is currently experiencing both a fashion and culinary revolution. Guests will witness landmarks such as Christiansborg Palace, Amalienborg Castle and the Little Mermaid Statue, as well as discovering the tranquil city parks and quieter canal-side paths. The tour covers five miles over one and a half hours. From £19.39 per person. All tours available to book through Viator.com. Exclude flights and accommodation.

as it has just been granted a £4.7m Lottery grant to relocate the Bellman aircraft hanger to reveal the original Brooklands circuit Finishing Straight which will allow vehicles to be driven along it and hopefully, in time, aircraft to taxi along it on at selected events. Brooklands may just be the just the ticket for motoring enthusiasts but ladies are well catered for too with the spa and themed events such as 80s Film Nights and girly getaways - (many of the rooms have adjoining doors that can link rooms together).

BOOK IT the range of cars old and new. For me, the highlight was the exploded view of a Mercedes-Benz Formula One race car suspended by wire from a ceiling. Another attraction not to miss just a stones throw away is the Brooklands Museum, which contains a mixture of cars, buses and aeroplanes and the legendary Concorde. The museum is set for major expansion over the next 18 months

If you can’t be Rory McIlroy,

dress like him

High fashion isn’t necessarily the first thing you think of when a conversation about golf crops up, but in the wake of this year’s Masters, the players’ clothing is causing quite a stir. Rory McIlroy might not have won this year’s Masters but his popularity still seems to know no bounds. Sure, winner Jordan Spieth (who wore Under Armour) broke records with his performance at Augusta but the support for the Irish wonder is unfailing, right down to what he wears. This year Nike did a spectacular job designing the clothing scripts for their sponsored players, including Rory McIlroy and Tiger Woods, while Adidas joined the club with Jason Day, Dustin

Johnson and Sergio Garcia. The tournament saw McIlroy under an increasingly glaring spotlight with high hopes for success in the only major championship that he has yet to conquer. So it’s no surprise that out of all the players that golfers have been choosing to emulate, Rory took an early lead. Golf suppliers Golfsupport who stock the scripts have said that both before, during and after the Masters, sales of the McIlroy look have

been exponentially higher than those of his peers, proving that his appeal is about much more than individual victories. Golfsupport pro Alex Etches puts the fascination with the player down to his characterful performances in addition to his talent: “there’s obviously no doubt that Rory is an incredible golfer, but he is also an exciting player. There are lots of people who hover in the top 10 category because they are consistent, but you never quite know what you are going to get with Rory – he could win or he could have a terrible round –

there’s nothing in between and that makes him really wonderful to watch.” In case you haven’t seen it, McIlroy’s Nike paraphernalia was an eye-catching black, white and neon yellow – a bold but nonetheless fresh look that should be easy to spot on the course this year. The quality is high and it has also been available in comparatively short supply (we all know what a good limited edition does for popular appeal). In short, the Masters might be over but it seems many of us are taking a little piece of it out onto the course with us and into the summer sun. Well, if you can’t play like Rory McIlroy, you might as well dress like him right?

Clubs: completing Rory’s look this year has been the Nike Vapor driver, Fairway, Hybrid and Irons – everything you need to fill that capacious golf bag with the latest innovations to improve the accuracy of your shot. You can even have them custom fit to your requirements.

Nike’s Modern Pants bring a little colour and a slim fit to your game whilst still being comfortable.

Nike Vapor Legacy Mesh Caps have a distinctive vapor green swoosh and include Nike’s flex fitting system for total comfort. Nike Vapor Staff Bag has accompanied McIlroy on tour this year and has the advantage of being bigger than most others on the market. There’s space for everything right down to that extra fleece in chillier months.

Nike Lunar Control 3 shoes are the upgrade on the traditional model, with a lighter sole and flywire construction to provide greater support. For more details on all products visit Golf Support Equipment Superstore, golfsupport.com, call 0844 324 6766 or email info@golfsupport.com

Male pampering And for the boys…

I

DON’T think it’s any great secret that most men love a massage. It may be a stereotype because realistically most people like them regardless of gender, but whether it’s postsport or following a long Foxhills day at work, ask a man what they want and out of a select list of about three things, a massage almost always features. If my time so far in the spa industry has taught me anything however, it’s that branching out on that treatment list can pay dividends, and a treatment, which a lot of therapists recommend for men is in fact a facial. If you aren’t already convinced about this, hear me out. Part of the reason is the shaving factor – think of all the stress and strain that your skin goes through with that simple but regular action. A good facial can go a long way to soothing skin and helping to prevent demons such as ingrown hairs. For anyone working in a city a facial will help clear all that dirt and grime clogging pores; for anyone playing a lot of outdoor sport consider this your partial antidote to weathering; and for those who haven’t mastered the art of applying a daily moisturiser, this is your chance to give your skin a bit of TLC. Another reason for the facial recommendation is that for anyone who’s not all that familiar with the spa setup, a full body massage can actually be a little bit intimidating. Us girls are generally masters at the paper knicker situation and it’s actually not half as intimidating as you might think. But for men (and women) who are feeling selfconscious and would like a gentle intro to the treatment process, a facial, particularly

Foxhills one that includes a head, neck and shoulder massage, eases you in nicely. On that note, I thought I would make a few alternative suggestions when it comes to spa treatments for men. Next time you’re looking for a little pampering, why not branch out beyond the go-to massage and try one of these…

ESPA Men’s Purifying Facial: Available at Whittlebury Hall in Northamptonshire (next door to Silverstone race track if it’s of interest), this facial starts with an analysis under a skin vision lamp to assess your needs. Then follows an exfoliation, cleanse, shoulder and face massage, face mask, and a head massage, finishing with a dose of moisturiser to set you happily on your way! www.spabreaks.com/ venues/whittlebury-hall Luxury Rassoul: I recommend this

Hydra facial

Whittlebury

Men enjoy some pampering too, says Bonnie Friend, Editor at spabreaks.com particularly for anyone heading to a spa with his or her other halves because it really is a quality time, couples treatment. This particular variant on the rassoul is at Foxhills in Surrey, and it involves choosing a scent for the experience, then a therapist explains how to apply the products to one another (different muds and clays), before you are left to do just that in a specially designed steam room. You sit, you relax, you enjoy the products together, and then the steam is replaced with a monsoon-style shower to wash it all away. You finish off by applying your preferred oil or moisturiser. www.spabreaks. com/venues/foxhills Men’s Grooming Day: The gorgeous people at the Amida Spas collection (in this case Amida Spa Chelsea) use the Aromatherapy Associates products (trust me, they’re good) combined with Alpha-H to deliver a 90-minute experience, which is a bit like a facial for your back. Think about all

the time your back spends under a work shirt or sports clothing, and the amount of neglect it suffers – well this is designed to de-clogg and de-stress. It includes

a back massage aimed at improving circulation and releasing muscle tension, followed by an exfoliation and a mask, and completed with a moisturiser as well.

www.spabreaks.com/ venues/amida-spa-chelsea DECLEOR Intensive Energising Face Treatment: This 55 minute treatment available at Lifehouse Spa in Essex will ensure tired skin is kick-started and irritations are minimised with this fatigue-fighting anti-ageing treatment. It is a great tonic for reducing shaving bumps and irritation and invigorating skin to look fresh and youthful. You’ll feel a new man at the end of it. Lifehouse also offer a DECLEOR Energising Body Treatment which includes a powerful therapeutic massage to banish muscular aches and pains leaving you feeling revitalised. www. spabreaks.com/venues/ lifehouse-spa-hotel

Darren Jones, 35, describes himself as ‘a very passionate chef who has been in love with cooking food since the age of 18.’ Growing up in Reading he started working for Jamie’s a few years ago, moving to Essex two years ago. “Jamie’s has been a big part of my life,” he explains, “it’s taught me a lot about food, controlling a busy kitchen and how to cook fantastic Italian specials.”

the gas going off, mid service. There’s nothing worse than having loads of checks on and all of a sudden the gas goes off, it’s the worst thing ever, as you have to be careful not to burn yourself turning it all back on, you have to then explain to a hungry bunch of customers that it’ll be a while before they eat. It makes me shudder just thinking about it.

W

HAT is your first food memory?

Best cooking tip for a novice?

It would have to be my old school favourite meal, roast chicken. Still to this day I love a roast chicken with all the trimmings, thick gravy, loads of veggies, and fall off the bone chicken with that succulent crispy skin…I’ve just made myself hungry thinking about it!

When it comes to cooking, for me the most important thing it to remain as calm as possible, sounds easy but trust me at 9pm on a Saturday night calm is the last thing on your mind, but it really does help. Taking your time is very important too, so I always remind new chefs that if your going to do it, do it slowly and right and the speed of it will come naturally..

Who has influenced your cooking the most?

I have always loved Jamie Oliver. The way he can turn a few ingredients into a beautiful dish with a glut of this and a dollop and that, so to say he’s been my main influence would be bang on. However, being a massive fan of fish, I do like Rick Stein. This guy makes me hungry every time I see him on TV. His passion for fish is amazing and he is inspiring to watch. If given a choice between red meat and fish, well, fish would win every time. Why did you become a chef?

I became a chef back in 1988. I actually walked into a restaurant (TGI Fridays) looking for bar work. They didn’t have any but said there was a position in the kitchen. Not even being able to boil an egg, I was a little reluctant but thought I’d give it a go. I started in pot wash but after a week and a half the chef in charge said ‘I can’t have you in there come in the kitchen and I’ll make a chef out of you, ‘ I stayed with them for seven years and worked my way up the ladder. I’ll always remember the place though and I still use some of the theories they taught me. What is your favourite dish/ ingredient?

Where do I start. Mackerel. I’ve loved this fish since the first time I tried it. It’s lovely stuffed with lemon and thyme with a rich pizzaiola sauce, heaven! My favourite ingredient would have to be either chilli or garlic. I eat both every day without fail and when it comes to herbs I am a huge fan of rosemary, the smell of it puts a smile on my face and the thought of it makes me want to cook. Your worst kitchen nightmare?

My idea of a kitchen nightmare (which has happened to me on more than one occasion) is

Why Jamie’s?

On a plate with… Darren Jones, Head Chef, Jamie’s Trattoria, Chelmsford

I have been asked a lot of times, “why Jamie’s.” It’s the best place to work as it’s buzzy and full of life and you get to cook some amazing dishes and work with ingredients that you wouldn’t normally work with. I’ve got to meet some great chefs and also work with Jamie Oliver and Gennaro Contaldo which is just fantastic. At Trattoria the relationship between the kitchen and front of house is incredible, we all work as a unit. I’m very lucky and extremely proud to be the head chef of this amazing restaurant and I’m looking forward to seeing where it takes me in the future.

None one likes to waste time – not buyers or agents, therefore here at The Home Partnership, we take the time to speak to you at the initial point of registration, to ensure that we really get an understanding of your requirements. We also regularly call you to have a catch up, see if your position has changed in any way and generally keep up to date with your house hunt. This also means that when we take on suitable properties, you are at the fore front of our minds to arrange a viewing. There are a few significant pointers that we would highly recommend to put you in a great buying position:

Blackmore - £650,000 We are delighted to be marketing this superbly presented four/five bedroom link detached house, situated in the heart of this picturesque village. This home offers a master suite including dressing area, dining area with doors to the courtyard style garden and a fully fitted study in bedroom four.

1. Ensure that you get your finances in order and know exactly how much you can borrow, with an “in principle” agreement from your lender (our inhouse mortgage brokers are also on hand!) 2. Before viewing properties understand the difference between your preferred “wants” and absolute “needs” 3. Locations can vary from one street to the next, and at different times of day.

Consider school runs and pub opening times

4. Do not make an offer on a property unless you are absolutely serious about making it your home. The seller’s expectations will be raised and you could damage your reputation with the agent as a genuine purchaser 5. Be honest with the agent – feedback from viewings is imperative as it enables us to advise our clients and your honesty will be highly regarded in the branch 6. Finally, if you are selling your own home and see a property that you want to put an offer on, speak to your agent and ask them to approach previous viewers – it is their job to get your home sold, therefore contacting people and advising that there is now a deal to be done, is a very shrewd move!

Get stuck into a book ... that’s informative & educational, says Chicken & Frog’s Natasha Radford

I

Books are great, we all know that. Usually this feature focuses on the best fiction out there, but this time we’ve decided to have a look at some of the exciting non-fiction on the market at the moment

T is a well known statistic that boys lean towards information texts over fiction and, in my humble opinion, dipping into a book such as one of the titles suggested below, is just as rewarding reading wise as reading a novel from start to finish. With computer coding taking over a chunk of the new primary curriculum, this book is high on the list. Carol Vorderman’s Computer Coding for Kids is a must. This step-by-step - and very visual - guide to the complex skill of computer

coding is suitable for children aged 9 and over and teaches the basics of coding for multiple programming languages, including Scratch and Python. Avoiding computer jargon and starting with the basics, the book generally progresses to more advanced computer projects where children can even start building their own games through coding. When it comes to nonfiction, Dorling Kindersley has got it just right. The Big Book of Dinosaurs is no exception, with its oversized format and full colour

illustrations; this book is perfect for dinosaur lovers everywhere. It is a colourful catalogue of these mystifying creatures from the past that will keep even young readers entertained for hours. Children will enjoy spotting all the different dinosaurs from the fierce meat-eating Tyrannosaurus and the long-necked plant-eating Diplodocus to the heavily armoured Stegosaurus and the city Compsognathus. Terry Deary and Martin Brown make the perfect team, especially when it comes to their infamous

Horrible Histories collection. Re-formatted to include a little less text, bolder font and an array of hilarious illustrations, these books have a far reaching readership. The books are now supported with an award winning T.V. series, Chelmsford’s Premier Boutique stage shows and a highly Chelmsford’s Chelmsford’s Premier Premier Boutique Boutique interactive Stocking a superb selection of Spanish baby and children’s wear, website for Stocking Stocking a superb a superb selection selection of Spanish of Spanish baby and babychildren’s and children’s wear, wear, budding historians (horriblealongside classic styles and traditional smocked clothing. histories.co.uk). alongside alongside classicclassic stylesstyles and of traditional and traditional smocked smocked clothing. clothing. driver operates him, and how the engineers of the Sodor railway keep him in tip-top condition. Some of Thomas’ friends also feature, with Henry’s overhaul, for example, offering the chance for young readers to see how a steam engine is taken apart and refitted. As your child develops, you can move them on to more technical manuals including the U.S.S Enterprise and The Millennium Falcon. Last, but by no means least this time, is Camilla de le Bedoyere’s Animals. This stunningly visual book offers page after page of more than 300 lavishly illustrated animals. Count the number of fish in a shoal, find out who has the strangest beak. Learn about the fastest, the biggest, the most colourful, and the weird and wonderful! With beautiful illustrations covering mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians, fish, insects, spiders and other invertebrates, there is something to engage and

delight your child on every page. There is a plethora of high quality information books out there, for children of all ages and abilities. Don’t leave them off of your child’s reading list because they may be just the thing for a ‘reluctant’ reader and they impart a great amount of knowledge too!

IFTEEN Members of Parliament from across Essex helped Visit Essex launch the Live Local, Love Local campaign to encourage residents to explore, experience and enjoy this beautiful and fascinating county. The county’s MPs were invited to visit their favourite location within their constituency and help spell out the campaign’s theme. The destinations chosen reflect the fabulous breadth and diversity of attractions and venues throughout Essex, from Upminster Windmill to Colchester Castle. George Kieffer, chairman of Visit Essex, the official tourism organisation for the county said: “Our objective is to promote tourism, increase visitor numbers, and generate income for Essex tourism and hospitality businesses.’’ As part of the celebration, special offers are available at visitessex.com/livelocal with more than £500 of money-saving vouchers. In 2014, nearly £1million of additional business was generated for the county from tourism. The event coincides with English Tourism Week 2015 (March 14-22), a week-long celebration of events and activities across the country. “We’ve been delighted by the response from our MPs,” said Mr Kieffer. “They’ve chosen quite an eclectic mix of destinations in which to be photographed with their letter. Each location reflects the rich diversity of great days and nights out right across Essex – there’s never been a better time to discover this very special place outside your front door.”

Russell Grant’s Weekly Horoscopes

ARIES March 21st - April 20th

You’re thinking deeply about your current situation and you yearn for change. You’ve always been an adventurous person who enjoys exploring unfamiliar surroundings. Taking a course or going on a short trip can be stimulating. You’ll have to spend more money than you hoped, but try not to dwell on that. Doing something different will lift your spirits and make you realise there are more important things than having money in the bank. Investing in your personal growth is a worthwhile expense.

Spending time on your own will be therapeutic. Friends are eager for your company, which is flattering but exhausting. Your emotional reserves are running low. The best way to replenish them is to devote time to spiritually uplifting activities. Communing with nature, spending time with a favourite pet, reading, writing and listening to music are all worthy pursuits. Turn off your mobile and stay off the computer an hour before bedtime. It’s time to catch up on your rest.

LIBRA September 24th - October 23rd

Dealing with an ethical matter is critical. You can no longer sweep a troubling issue under the rug. Confronting the source of trouble will be scary but exhilarating. Fortunately, you will have the support of colleagues. It’s time to stand up for your rights and demand better treatment. Money from an inheritance, dividend or legal settlement can bring financial relief. Use this fund sparingly. Having a cushion against adversity will be empowering. Living from paycheque to paycheque is too stressful.

CAPRICORN December 22nd - January 20th

TAURUS April 21st - May 21st

LEO July 24th - August 23rd

Your social life is warming up, bringing welcome relief from your world of work. Go to as many parties and get togethers as possible. These gatherings will put you in good spirits. If you’re looking for love, you could find it now, but with someone who is very different from your usual type. Are you already in a relationship? You and your amour will turn heads at a glittering professional bash. Have a supply of business cards available, you’re sure to meet some potential clients and customers.

SCORPIO October 24th - November 22nd

You’re going through a period of profound changes, so it’s natural you feel uneasy. Whenever you yearn for familiarity, remember how stale your old life had become. Think about fulfilling your potential. Push yourself to try new things and meet different people. You’re in an experimental phase. It’s not necessary to make serious commitments. Find out what works best for you. Your life doesn’t have to resemble anyone else’s. It just has to satisfy.

AQUARIUS January 21st - February 19th

GEMINI May 22nd - June 21st

VIRGO August 24th - September 23rd

SAGITTARIUS November 23rd - December 21st PISCES February 20th - March 20th

Moneymaking opportunities will arise, making you feel more confident about the future. Improving your income will require careful planning. Tell your employer you want a higher salary. Outline your recent contributions and accomplishments to justify your request. You will meet with initial resistance, but will get your way if you persist. Use your charisma to influence a powerful person at work. If you play your cards right, you could land a promotion along with your raise. Be your own advocate. You’re entering a period of personal satisfaction. Put mundane responsibilities on the back burner and devote your energy to an uplifting sport or hobby. You’ve made lots of sacrifices for others. Now it’s time to please yourself. Changing your image and style will bring you tremendous satisfaction and one or two real surprises. You’ll be amazed to see how people treat you differently. You would never have guessed what a tremendous impact appearances have on people’s behaviour.

CANCER June 22nd - July 23rd

You’re about to be thrust into the spotlight, so get ready. As a general rule, you don’t like being subjected to public scrutiny. Presenting good ideas to an audience is a different story. You’ve always been good at making proposals that are backed up with compelling facts and figures. Take this opportunity to demand some important changes. People will be impressed by your mastery of information. There’s a good chance you’ll be offered a prominent job in the communications field.

A business or romantic partnership will be empowering. Instead of trying to do all the work yourself, you will have a helpmate to share the trials and the triumphs. This will be very comforting. As a rule, you don’t like making commitments. They feel suffocating and constricting. Partnering someone who respects your free spirit will be different. You’ll be able to assert your independence without causing an argument. Some compromises will be necessary, but you are flexible.

You’ll be feeling busier, which is great. You enjoy being in demand. If you’re looking for work, promising job offers will start to arrive. Choose the one that offers the greatest amount of free time. It’s important for you to take frequent breaks from your work. You have a tendency to become obsessed with responsibility. By striking a healthy balance between your professional and personal lives, you’ll feel much happier. When one area suffers, the other will offer comfort and hope.

A passionate romance will change your priorities. Instead of pouring all your energy into work, you’ll focus on serving your partner. This is a change of pace for an independent character like you. Ordinarily, you prefer keeping your own counsel. Instead of keeping your thoughts to yourself, discuss your hopes, dreams and wishes with someone who understands. The world will seem more kind and compassionate. It will be easier to make friends with loyal, trustworthy people. It will be impossible to hide your thoughts and feelings from others. Powerful emotions will cause you to make changes to your domestic life. A relationship or habit that is no longer serving you will fall by the wayside. You’ll be left to fill the void with something worthy. Whether this means taking an art course, launching a creative project or beginning a journal is immaterial. The important thing is to find a safe way to express your passions and sentiments.

London Corporate Cabs

Essex-cabbies will gift you a lift!

L

ONDON Corporate Cabs are a new, small but progressive and highly professional Taxi Company. They provide a bespoke, pre booked service at very competitive rates. All drivers have completed the world famous Knowledge of London and all vehicles are modern, air-conditioned London Taxis. Tell us a bit about you? We are Tony, Ross and John, three London Taxi drivers from Chingford, Essex. We offer Traditional London Taxis for Weddings, Airports, Sightseeing Tours, Corporate and Sporting Events and Filming Hire. How did London Corporate Cabs come about? Over a bowl of Pasta and a Cup of Tea. One evening while the Taxi business was a bit slow we were discussing different ideas, ventures etc and wanted to do something different to just taking people from A to B. After a few dinner get togethers, London Corporate Cabs was born. Have you always worked as London Taxi Drivers? No, we all came from different working backgrounds, Tony used

GET I N TOUCH

to be a Money broker, Ross was a Service Manager for BMW and John was a Data Communications Manager for BT. What is the appeal ? The Iconic London Cab is instantly recognisable the world over. You know what it is straight away. For a Bride arriving to her special day, a London Cab is the perfect vehicle, easy to get in and out of in a Wedding dress and with a choice of five or six seater Taxis they are spacious enough for a full bridal party. Taking a Tour of London, we can go where the Buses can’t and with a driver who has spent years studying the city. Why is London Corporate Cabs different from any other cab/chauffeur service? We offer the lot, not just Wedding Taxis or Airport Taxis, we can offer a Taxi for all occasions. With unrivalled knowledge of London we know how to get about better than anyone and offer a service tailored to the individual. Have you any funny anecdotes about passengers you’ve driven around you can divulge?

Bearing in mind the inside of a Cab is a cross between a Confessional Box and a Doctors Room we can’t divulge too much... but one that sticks out - John pulled up at the Ivy Restaurant and saw a paparazzi getting knocked to the ground by a man, he locked his doors wondering what all the commotion was about, then realised it was Michael Hutchence and Paula Yates who were then frantically waving him down, to use him as a get away from all the commotion. Which ‘celebrity’ passengers have you driven about? Plenty - it’s the perks of the job! Daniel Craig, Hugh Grant, Rowan Atkinson, David Walliams and Michael Cane to name but a few. Only this week Tony picked up World Cup winner & former Chelsea player Michael Ballack. Sum up your company in three words Friendly, Reliable and Efficient

London Corporate Cabs - A Taxi For All Occasions, currently taking bookings for RHS Chelsea Flower Show (May 19-23), Epsom Derby (June 6), Royal Ascot (June 16-20), F1 British Grand Prix Silverstone (July 3-5) and other events...e-mail londoncorporatecabs@gmail.com, www.LondonCorporateCabs.com or contact Tony: 078558 41119, Ross: 07961 801159 or John: 07717 171707.

Roadster ready for summer

A

S EXPECTED, Audi has launched its brand-new TT Roadster -- the drop-top version of its latest TT Coupe. The Roadsters will be in showrooms in May, nicely-timed for what we hope will be a fine summer! And what a good job they have made of it: the hood is particularly neat to look at from the outside, allowing the car to maintain much of its pretty coupe looks. The hood is made from three-layered fabric and Audi claims excellent thermal insulation. It takes only ten seconds to open or close the roof and this can be done at speeds up to 31 mph. A clever feature is that, because it closes in a ‘Z’ side-profile, it stows away in its own shallow aluminium compartment under the boot lid and does not reduce the 280 litres of space that the Coupe has. An optional extra for the UK market is the open top driving package that includes head level heating, the electrically-operated wind deflector and the heated seats. I was lucky enough to drive the car on a dry and sunny day, if a bit on the chilly side. With the heater at maximum and the heated seats keeping my nether regions cosy too, it

TOM SCANLAN was a thoroughly enjoyable experience. This was especially so in the 230 PS 2.0-litre TFSI version...this has a most attractive exhaust note and it was all-too-easy to wind the engine up to nearly 8,000 rpm just to enjoy all that sound and performance; this one gets to 62 mph in 6.2 seconds. I had earlier sampled the 2.0-litre TDI Ultra car. This low-emission (114g/km) model is the slowest of all the TT Coupes and Roadsters, although it’s no snail, being able to hit 62 mph in 7.3 seconds which is surely more than fast enough for most people. On a 120-mile route that covered all sorts of traffic and road conditions, the diesel Roadster indicated an overall fuel consumption of 53.2 mpg; the official combined consumption figure is 62.8. Automatic versions are available, but both of the test drives were with the six-speed manual gearbox. Is there a better manual box out there? It’s arguable. All the changes were delightfully

slick, particularly in the higher gears. I’m a fan of automatics, but this manual box could make me think again if I was a buyer. And even if, in the TFSI Quattro, the auto box reduces the acceleration time to 62 mph by a full 0.6 of a second, down to 5.6 seconds. The handling remains excellent. Audi has introduced lightweight aluminium/steel strengthening in the frame to ensure the complete rigidity that cutting a metal roof off could compromise. The virtual instrument display, nice to look at, can take a bit of learning, but it and the myriad

functions on hand (even telling you where the cheapest nearby fuel is available) keep Audi right up with the game. Altogether, there are three engines to consider: the above two already mentioned and the mega 310 PS 2-litre in the just-introduced TTS Coupe. This is on sale now and will be followed by its Roadster counterpart in June. Prices start at £32,045. The test diesel, with all its optional extras totalled £37,795 and the TFSI was £40,255. No doubt these Roadsters will keep Audi on its crest of a wave.

Hot trio of Golf estates T HE order books have opened for Volkswagen’s trio of hot Golf Estates – the Golf R and GTD Estates and the Golf Alltrack – ahead of first deliveries in August. The R and GTD Estates boast all the attributes of their popular hatchback counterparts, with like for like trims, but bootspace is increased from 380 litres to 605 litres – and up to 1,620 litres when the rear seats are folded flat. Power outputs range from 110PS in Alltrack which is available with three engines, through 184PS in the GTD to 300PS in the range-topping R model. The Alltrack and the R Estate also gain 4MOTION four-wheel drive. Like the Golf R hatch, the Golf R Estate is powered by a 2.0-litre

four-cylinder turbocharged TSI petrol engine. Maximum power is 300PS from 5,500 to 6,200 rpm while maximum torque of 380 Nm is available from 1,800 up to 5,500 rpm. In this new car, standstill to 50 mph takes just 3.8 seconds, and to 62 mph 5.1 seconds; top speed is electronically limited to 155mph. Style and spec-wise, the Golf R Estate follows all the cues of its hatchback sibling, though the estate is only available with a six-speed DSG gearbox. The Golf GTD Estate is, quite simply, a booted version of Volkswagen’s iconic long-distance sports cruiser. The new Estate model has at its heart a 2.0-litre common rail TDI engine which produces 184PS from 3,500 to 4,000 rpm. Maximum

Nissan goes sub aqua NISSAN is providing its unique Around View Monitor (AVM) camera technology to the Japan Agency for Marine-Earth Science and Technology and that may help uncover the mysteries of the oceans. The joint development contract with JAMSTEC and Topy, one of the top manufacturers of robot crawlers in Japan, will enhance the ability to search deep underwater for natural resources Underwater role for Nissan’s cameras

using Remotely Operated Vehicles. Nissan’s AVM technology will help ROV operators avoid obstacles and navigate the ocean sea floor more easily. AVM is one of the base technologies for Nissan’s autonomous drive vehicles, which the company aims to bring to market by 2020. The innovative safety system can be found on Nissan’s entire crossover range

including the new Juke, Qashqai and X-Trail. The AVM 3D function is combined with the ROV’s camera to improve measurement of distances on the ocean floor. This provides operators, controlling the ROVs aboard mother ships at sea, an overhead real-time bird’s-eye view of the remote vehicle and its immediate surroundings.

Three Golf estates offer different options torque is 280Nm from 2,500 to 5,000 rpm. The benchmark 0 to 62 mph sprint takes 7.9 seconds, with a top speed of 143 mph. Yet the Golf GTD Estate lives up to its benchmark economy, returning 64.2 mpg on the combined cycle, with CO2 emissions of just 115 g/km. A six-speed manual gearbox is standard, while a six-speed DSG version

is available for a premium of £1,415. The Golf Alltrack follows in the footsteps of the Passat Alltrack which first went on sale in the UK in 2012 and closes the gap between the on and off-road worlds, both visually and technically. It features a standard 4MOTION all-wheel drive system, off-road driving profile, higher ground clearance (up to 20 mm), and is styled to match its off-

Dacia Duster van

Dacia Duster goes commercial DACIA have announced plans to enter the UK light commercial vehicle market later this year with a commercial version of the Duster SUV, the Duster Commercial. The new models – available in 4x2 and 4x4 guises – have been created at the specific request of Dacia UK and Dacia Ireland, where car-derived vans account for 30 per cent of the LCV market. Order books open this month, with first UK deliveries expected at the end of June. Thanks to a false floor with load protection, Duster Commercial has a load capacity of 1,150 litres (4x2) or 1,000 litres (4x4), a payload of 550 kg and a flat cargo deck almost 1.4 metres long and more than a metre width between the wheel arches. Stanley double secures play-off place

S

HERWIN Stanley scored twice as Brentwood Town confirmed their place in this season’s play-offs with a 2-2 draw against Chatham Town at The Arena. Stanley gave the Blues the lead midway through the first half before Chatham turned things around with second half goals from George Humber and Joe Bingham. But Brentwood’s top scorer came to the rescue once again, firing in from the penalty spot nine minutes from time to ensure Brentwood will compete in the play-offs. Despite back-to-back defeats to Dereham Town and Barkingside, Brentwood went into Saturday’s

match with their fate still in their own hands, and they made an emphatic start with Robbie Rees striking the crossbar within the first minute. Blues’ captain Martyn Stokes should have done better in the 10th minute when the ball fell to him at the back post, but despite having time and space on his side he blazed an effort over the bar. Brentwood remained on top, however, and found a way through in the 21st minute.

BOWLS

Roll up and try your hand at bowls NEWCOMERS are being invited to try their hand at the genteel sport of lawn bowling with free trial sessions at King George’s Playing Fields in Brentwood. Experienced players will be welcoming visitors to an open day at the picturesque location from 10am on Saturday May 2, to explain the basics of the game which has been popular in the borough for more than a century Event spokesman Les Powell said: “We are very fortunate to have two of the region’s finest bowling greens, so there is no better place to learn.” Although would-be bowlers will be able to arrange free one-to-one trial sessions throughout the summer season, they are encouraged to attend the open day because they can then join other newcomers in follow-up group coaching sessions and quickly improve their game. Powell explained: “We have some of the top bowlers in the area who are available to support new players with practical advice and coaching. “Most of our new recruits achieve a standard high enough to play in league games during their first season.” Ron Lofts and Ann Powell are among the

players who will be helping with coaching sessions and after a pre-season inspection and report that the greens at King George’s are in superb condition. Brentwood Bowling Club has been at the heart of the bowling community since 1908 and officials say the success of their annual open day is vital to secure the future of the sport. Powell added: “Some clubs in other areas are struggling and a lot have closed, so it’s very important that we reach out to new players and returners to the sport. “A lot of people dither for years before giving bowls a try but when they eventually pluck up the courage, they invariably wish they’d made the move years ago! “We promise newcomers will be pleasantly surprised to discover how easy it is to get started and enjoy a roll-up with other players.” Apart from taking part in a healthy outdoor sport, club members also organise social activities in the pavilion at King George’s Playing Fields including quizzes, race nights and music events. For further information, visit www. brentwoodbowls.co.uk or call 01277 231375.

The ball was lumped forward from the back and Stanley beat onrushing keeper Ryan Nicholls to it before neatly knocking the ball past him and slotting into the empty net. Brentwood were unable to extend their lead before half-time and just 30 seconds into the second half the Kent side levelled the score when Connor French found Humber who fired past Ollie Bowles from 10 yards. Chatham’s desire was clear for all to see in the second half, themselves yet to make sure of league safety, and they completed the turnaround in the 66th minute. The referee awarded a dubious free-kick to the visitors following a foul from Daryl Robson. Bingham whipped the ball in and it flew straight past everyone inside the box and into the net. Brentwood brought on the attacking duo of Sam Bantick and Tom Richardson to turn things around and the former won the decisive spot-kick after Nicholls brought him down inside the box. Stanley stepped up and fired the ball beyond the outstretched arm of the keeper to score his

20th league goal of the season. The Blues were unable to nick a late winner but the point proved to be enough as Dereham Town were held to a 1-1 draw by Maldon & Tiptree. After the match Flanagan said: “I’m not necessarily pleased with the draw because I think we let in a couple of awful goals again, but we’ve managed to get ourselves across the line and secure our play-off place and I’m happy with that. “The boys can relax now, I think they’ve been a little bit jittery for whatever reason, we’ve been making a lot of mistakes that we weren’t making earlier in the season and we’ve let in some of the worst goals I’ve seen in the last three games so I’m hoping we’ll get a reaction now that we’re in it and we can go back to doing what we were doing earlier in the season.” Brentwood will travel away from home in the play-offs no matter what the result in their final regular season fixture away to Heybridge Swifts next Saturday. MARTIN VOLLER

Win lifts Romford out of relegation zone A GOAL from Nick Reynolds was enough to give Romford victory and keep them a point clear of the relegation zone, in their penultimate game of the season. The early exchanges saw both teams struggle to come to terms with the windy conditions and hard pitch and a lot of passes were going astray. Boro were also under the added pressure of their fight against relegation and Aaron Omand twice had to get down sharply to save good Cheshunt efforts. It took a while, but Romford started to get the better of the midfield battle and despite over hitting some free kicks and long balls forward they created the better chances for the rest of the half. Loui Hazelwood and Abs Seymour severely tested Hayward in the home goal,

but in the 37th minute Nick Reynolds timed his run perfectly on the right to collect Abs Seymour’s diagonal free kick over the defence and from a very tight angle drove his shot across the keeper and into the far corner. Not long after another Seymour free kick caught Hayward by surprise and he spilled the ball backwards over his head but it hit the crossbar and bounced to safety. Romford did not let the interval interrupt their superiority but could not make anything of a number of half chances to get the vital second. Cheshunt were also looking dangerous at times on the break but were mainly getting closed

down well into their own half by a Boro side who were all working tremendously hard for the cause. Manager Paul Martin held off with his substitutions but got the timings just right, gradually bringing off his attacking three who had all done their job. A serious looking injury to a Cheshunt man caused a lot of stoppage time and did not do much for the nerves of the usual large blue and gold following, but the fresh legs up front helped to mostly keep the home team pegged in their own half and Joe Scott came very near to putting the result beyond doubt. The final whistle brought a tremendous roar of elation and relief on and off the field and Boro now go into the final match at home to old rivals Ware knowing that the teams below have everything to do. Mixed fortunes for Essex duo in Bahrain

Ann Powell and Ron Lofts making a pre-season inspection of the bowling greens

WILL STEVENS got back on track in the Formula One World championships, after missing out on the last round in Malaysia. His Marussai F1 car suffered fuel feed problems which sidelined him, but for the Bahrain GP last weekend all was well and he qualified in 18th place ahead of his team mate Roberto Merhi. The 23-year-old from

Rochford finished the night race in the desert in 16th place, just two laps behind eventual race winner, fellow Brit Lewis Hamilton. Also competing in the Bahrain event in his GP2 race car was Dunmow’s Alex Lynn. The Williams F1 development driver had a torrid time in his two races over the weekend. Starting in third place on

the grid he pitted for new tyres and on returning clipped the back of another car and damaged his front wing, eventually finishing the race in 19th place. This was starting place for the second race and worked his way up to 11th but was eventually classfied 15th after a five second penalty for an infringement under yellow race flags.

Heartbreak for Leopards in play-off semi final

O

Albert Margai led the scoring with 16 points

NE OF the most successful seasons in Leopards’ history ended in disappointment as they lost 61-51 against Kent Crusaders in the play-off semi-final on Saturday. A poor shooting display proved to be the Big Cats’ downfall as they converted under 27% of their field goal attempts and scored just 22 second half points. Captain Albert Margai led Robert Youngblood’s team with 16 points, with Courtney Van Beest adding 11 points and Ladi Brown – who made his first start in place of unavailable American Byron Richards – finished with nine points and seven rebounds. Crusaders did a good job limiting the normally reliable Dave Ajumobi and Will Ashby to four points each, shooting a combined three-from-23 from the field. Former Leopard Josh Steel finished with 14 points and six boards as Crusaders won the final while another ex-Big Cat Dwayne Orija added 10 rebounds to his seven points. Steel opened the scoring in a tight first

period before Ashby replied with a trey, and there was little to split the sides as Matic Zupanc scored from downtown to tie the game at 14-14 at the first break. Only a Van Beest jump shot and a single Ladi Brown free-throw troubled the scorers for Leopards in the first five and half minute of the second period as Kent opened a 23-17 lead. Margai broke the run with a trey, only for Steel to reply in kind before a Lukas Winegarner tip-on and a three-point Ladi Brown play pulled the Big Cats back into the game. Ashby tied things at 26-26 with a freethrow but it was Margai who ensured that the Big Cats were level at 29 going into the locker room at half-time. The third period proved to be little short of a disaster for Youngblood’s team as Kent opened with 10 straight points.

A timeout from the Leopards’ playcaller finally stopped the rot as Van Beest broke the run but that was only a temporary reprieve as the offensive woes continued with Kent scoring another eight unanswered points to lead 47-31 with three minutes left in the quarter. Winegarner scored Leopards’ second basket of the period, but although they finally put some points on the board with Ladi Brown hitting a trey, the Big Cats went into the final break trailing 54-40. Van Beest opened the fourth scoring and as Leopards’ defence tightened up, Ajumobi made it an eight point game with 5:30 remaining. A Van Beest tip-in cut the deficit to six at the midway stage of the period and Ajumobi maintained that margin with 3:39 on the clock. But that was the last time Leopards got on the scoreboard as Crusaders wrapped up the win and the Big Cats were left to taste semi-final defeat in the Final Four for the fourth time in five visits to the end-ofseason tournament. Nathan W came off to allow Daniel to come back on and the Jets continued to push forward. Nathan F’s shot was blocked by the Meadow Youth keeper. Jack came off for Shaun and the pressure began to build again with a great pass from Jake B to Jake D who found the target but was denied an equaliser by the woodwork, the ball bouncing in front of Daniel who himself couldn’t get the ball in. However the pressure did pay off. Haydn made a nuisance of himself in the middle of the park but it was a huge throw in from Jake B that found Nathan who didn’t need a second attempt to equalise. A win would have been the fairer result but considering the incredibly tense atmosphere the Jets were happy with a draw and it was a fitting end to the home games for this season.

STUDENTS from four Tae Kwon Do clubs went head to head recently to pit against each other to see which club came out on top. The event was held at Hall Mead School, Upminster, and following four hours of sparring the overall team winner was Luton, followed very closely by Dagenham. However, there was a Grand Championship event which allowed all the winners of individual sparring to compete against each other for a Junior Grand Champion and a Senior Grand Champion. Both of these were from Dagenham with Akaash Sharma the Adult Grand Champion and Harrison Smith the Junior Grand Champion. Students from Romford & Dagenham Tae Kwon Do competed and medalled and were: Jason Payne, Akaash Sharma, Paul Peters, Ashley George, Jose Seixas, Sandy Goodson, Kevin Jaku, Alex Zugravu, Jacob Beardsell, Callum Sanderson, Harrison Smith, Jessica Paterson, Hannah Mulligan and Sara Seixas.
