Barnardo’s charity fundraising walk for under-fives comes with a fun theme
Shiver Me Timbers! – this year’s Big Toddle walk for under-fives has a Pirate theme
C THURSDAY 30 APRIL 2015
ISSUE 028
HILDREN’S charity Barnardo’s is hoping to raise a treasure trove of money with the Big Toddle fundraising walk for under fives which is back for 2015 – and the theme year is Pirates. Barnardo’s is calling on nurseries, parents and child minders in Essex to arrange an event to help the UK’s most disadvantaged children. This summer’s Pirate-themed Big Toddle will see thousands of children and adults across the UK dressing up, Jack Sparrow-esque and walking the suggested half a mile with friends and family. Fundraisers who took part in Essex walks last year netted a fantastic £20,046 for the charity. Romford netted £3,671, Brentwood £2,699 and Chelmsford £2,581. Since The Big Toddle began, families have helped Barnardo’s raise over £13.83 million, with 5,800 groups raising £680,000 last year alone for those children who are most in need. To find out more about Barnardo’s Big Toddle please visit www. barnardos.org.uk/bigtoddle and register for free. Once registered you’ll receive a

Barnardo’s works with more than 200,000 children, young people and their families each year and run more than 900 services across the UK. They believe in children and work
to ensure that every young person has a right to thrive with a vision to realise the ethos of founder Thomas Barnardo’s dream of a world where no child is turned away from the help that they need. The charity works to transform the lives of the UK’s most vulnerable children and every year helps thousands

NEWS CROSSRAIL DISRUPTION UPDATE
Free parking to help shoppers
T
O MAKE parking easier for shoppers near Shenfield Station during the construction of the new Crossrail rail link, Brentwood Council has made changes to the parking arrangements. As a way of helping residents to continue to visit shops and businesses in Shenfield, Brentwood Council has made changes to
parking in both Friars Avenue and Hunters Avenue car parks which came into effect at the beginning of April. In a bid to minimise disruption to local businesses and shoppers during the construction of Crossrail, both car parks are now free for shoppers wishing to park, with a maximum stay of two hours and with no return within four hours.
This arrangement will continue throughout the works. Crossrail started work at Shenfield Station in February and are using a small part of the car park in Friars Avenue in the early stages.
shorts
As work progresses they will be using more of the car park and this is expected to continue until March 2017. All on-street parking will remain the same but this may be reviewed at a later date if it is felt appropriate.

Mad Max gets in the saddle for charity ride
C
HELMER Village mother of two Maxine Allen is going on the trip of a lifetime – a 1,114 mile cycle ride from John O’Groats to Land’s End to raise £5,000 for a young person’s charity. Maxine, 50, or mad Max as friends are calling her, decided to embark on the 17-day challenge after Essex legal firm Birkett Long (who has an office in Chelmsford), where her husband, Peter is a partner, adopted the Rob George Foundation as their charity of the year. It is in memory of Rob, the sports-mad 21-year-old son of Philip George, former Managing Partner of the firm who died from leukaemia in December 2013. The Rob George Foundation started by Philip George and wife Lorraine, provides practical and financial support to young people
with life-threatening or terminal illnesses. Additionally, it offers financial support to young people

I’d say I’m fit, but not that fit, and when I heard Lorraine and Philip were arranging this trip, something Rob had wanted to do before he died, I didn’t need much persuading. A tasty award for local pie maker AWARD-winning family butchers and pie makers, Quality & Excellence Ltd is celebrating after winning the Beef & Ale Pie class at the 2015 British Pie Awards. Established in 1996, they are based in Theydon Bois near Epping. No stranger to recognition for their superb produce, in 2006 they sold their award winning pies to other butchers and farm shops in Essex and by 2008 were serving outlets across Hertfordshire, Essex and Cambridgeshire. In 2013 they entered the Great Taste awards run by the Guild of Fine Foods entering their Steak & Stilton pie which won a top award of Gold 3 star along with the title of Top 50 Product of 2013 (from nearly 10,000 products entered). The seventh annual British Pie Awards took place in Melton Mowbray last week and this year 830 pies were entered from 131 professional bakers and butchers. 109 top pie perfectionists were involved in the judging process including leading food critic Charles Campion. Quality & Excellence came up trumps with their Beef & Ale pie to win Class 5 of the competition. Matthew O’Callaghan, Chairman of the British Pie Awards added: “We’ve seen a truly varied and plentiful plethora of pies. The standard of entrants this year was higher than Michael Scrace from Quality & Excellence Ltd ever before and Quality & Excellence Ltd can receiving the award be very proud of its award.”

INCE its launch last summer, the Flybe London Southend to Caen route, operated by Stobart Air, has been a huge hit with travellers with more than 10,000 customers taking advantages of the affordable prices and short hop across the Channel. As London Southend Airport Interim MD Jon Horne commented: “Flybe’s Southend to Caen route puts Normandy on our doorstep.” Due to demand the airline has increased the number of flights to six per week during the peak summer season (July 11 to August 29). Caen is an ideal base from which to explore some fascinating culture. William the Conqueror is buried in the Abbey of Saint Etienne de Caen. perfect place from which to visit the World War Two D-Day landing beaches. Today, Sword and Omaha beaches are serene, peaceful places but there are frequent references to the vicious fighting that took place over seventy years ago. Remains of the large metal landing platforms have been left to rust in the sea with the waves of La Manche battering them, almost in rebuke, while Germany artillery and lookouts sit remorsefully along the windswept coastline. Just along the north coast you’ll find Deauville which boasts golden sands, elegant boutiques, gourmet dining and casinos. PHOENIX FM PRESENTER OF THE WEEK
The good guy of local radio
N
OVEMBER 2014 saw Chay Appleyard present his first show on Phoenix FM the quirkily titled 50 Shades of Chay. A few months before he covered for good friend Scott Sparx who used to present a show on the station catering for local artists. The boy must have done good as eventually a regular slot materialised and 50 Shades of Chay has been a weekly addition on Phoenix ever since. “I had to wait a long while to
Chay Appleyard
get a regular slot due to Phoenix’s popularity,” he says. So what have been his highlights so far? “They’ve always been when I’ve had guests in,” he says. “One of my favourite moments has to be presenting the Christmas show. I had three local artists in, Amy Sergeant, Roisin O’Hagan and SJ Denney. They all learned a Christmas cover and I hosted a quiz at the end, it was brilliant. Whenever I have guests on I always do a quiz and call the segment 50 Grades Smarter (I like my puns).” As well ensuring plenty of puns, Chay likes to inject plenty of humour into his shows. “I play indie music normally but I will sometimes throw in a cartoon theme song, or ask silly questions when I have guests in.” Music is a big part of Chay’s life and in his spare
time he plays in a band called Finding Miranda. “We have been going for around three years now. We are an indie-pop foursome. I am the primary songwriter, singer and acoustic guitarist. It’s such a fantastic transition from writing songs, to rehearsing in a room with your four mates and playing live on stage. It’s unbelievable. I love being in a band.” It appears he’s loving presenting his own show on local radio too. “I always have something to look forward to once a week,” he says, “I enjoy being the ‘good guy’ helping out fellow musicians and other performers and giving them a bit of publicity.” Presenting on Phoenix and being in a band you’d think he couldn’t fit much more in, but Chay has also had time to recently squeeze in running the Brighton Marathon. Tune into 50 Shades of Chay on Phoenix 98.0FM, every Thursday at 9pm. phoenixfm.com.

Greenwoods Hotel relaunches restaurant
F
INE dining and Greenwood’s Hotel & Spa go hand in hand. Formerly known as the Rosewood Restaurant, Greenwood’s has renamed and relaunchced its elegant eatery as Ellis’s. For those visiting Greenwood’s, a spa experience is what many are after. But immersing yourself in the entire Greenwood’s experience is most definitely recommended, including an overnight stay at this glorious retreat nestled in the picturesque village of Stock near Billericay and a fine dining experience at Ellis’s. The decor; chandelier lighting and cool greys and blues, is as appealing as what’s on the menu;
entrees including local ham hock terrine and smoked duck carpaccio, pan-friend sea bass and a selection of fine steaks for mains and decadently indulgent desserts including warm pear and frangipane tart and white
chocolate and banana brioche bread and butter pudding. The new name ‘Ellis’s’ is in recognition of Richard Adam Ellis, an illustrious owner of Greenwoods Manor house in the early 20th century. A senior partner in the City of London firm of Richard Ellis & Sons, Auctioneers, Estate Agents and Surveyors, he was president of
Stock Cricket Club for many years, a prominent member of the congregation at Stock church and owned one of the first two motor cars in the village. The restaurant has seating for 60 at any one time and affords diners views of the gardens. It also offers regular special occasion dining experiences; those coming up include Ladies Day ‘Ascot Style’ on June 18th and a Father’s Day BBQ on June 21. Head Chef Daniel HollandRobinson who has lived in Essex most of his life says: “Our aim is to source, prepare and serve innovative dishes using local produce as well as traditional and firm favourites. We are also happy to create bespoke, one-off menus if guests have something extra special in mind.” To make a reservation call 01277 829990.

Made in Essex caught up with garden designer, RHS Ambassador and Essex gent Adam Frost who is busy perfecting The Homebase ‘Urban Retreat’ Garden that he has designed for this year’s RHS Chelsea Flower Show (May 19-23).
OR me, creating a garden is about a journey that we can all enjoy. I love being outside, I love watching the hedgerows come to life in spring; being out there and seeing the seasons unfold.” Gardening has always been a major part of Adam’s life and the Gold Medal winner at Chelsea Flower Show has fond memories from helping out at his granddad’s allotment in Hertfordshire, to his horticulture apprenticeship and training and working with the best of the best including David Stevens and Geoff Hamilton. “All of my grandparents were gardeners, my grandmother even had a stall selling plants outside her home
Food
and I remember helping her to grow and sell them.” Adam, 45, has been in the landscape and garden design industry for about 30 years. Originally from Essex (he was born and went to school just outside Harlow), he now lives in Rutland with his wife and four children. “What I love more than anything about my work is the way it allows me to bring together my passion for plants with my love of design, to create special places for people to enjoy,” he explains. “Whether it’s for an individual, a couple, family or a corporate commission, the challenge is always to find out what really matters about the garden.” His gardening inspirations include

the late BBC Gardeners’ World presenter Geoff Hamilton. “I was lucky enough to work with Geoff, he was incredibly generous with his knowledge and a real inspiration. Geoff found a way to bring out the best in me and his passion for plants was infectious.” Spending seven years at Barnsdale Gardens in Rutland working alongside Geoff Hamilton developing the gardens is something he is proud of and Adam still visits them today. “It was the location for BBC Gardener’s World and I was lucky enough to see it evolve. It’s part of my DNA really. Nowadays I use Barnsdale as an outdoor classroom when I teach the students
from the Homebase Garden Academy. I set up the Academy with Homebase a few years ago to help unearth the next generation of gardening talent, so in a way it has come full circle for me.” Not leaving Essex out, his favourite gardens in the county include RHS Hyde Hall and the Beth Chatto Gardens. A six-time Gold Medal winner at Chelsea, this year he is once again designing a garden for Homebase. “I am currently fascinated with the Bauhaus design movement and one of its leading designers Marcel Breuer. This has inspired my garden for Homebase this year. I’m using some very modern contemporary materials which is really exciting.”

Real life
With an eye for perfection we were intrigued to find out what sums up the perfect garden for Adam and what his favourite plans are? “I think successful gardens are the ones that have been designed with the user in mind. A garden is about space and people. It needs to have a human aspect and it needs to be seasonal,” he says. “I am currently obsessed with tree ferns. I’m fascinated with the story of their evolution and the fact that they date back to the Jurassic period. I’m using Dicksonia antarctica in my RHS Chelsea garden this year for Homebase. I’ll be planting a bed of them against an architectural corten steel structure that will be a focal point at the rear of the garden.” Adam became involved with the Chelsea Flower Show through his dad, who was a landscape contractor and often built the main show gardens at Chelsea. Back in the 1970’s they allowed children into Chelsea and he remembers visiting the site to see the gardens as they progressed. “I designed

Adam’s top five gardening tips for some About Adam:
green-fingered encouragement 1. Create a structure One of the first considerations when creating a garden is to give it structure. This is the foundation of planting which holds the whole garden together. Trees, hedges and topiary can all be used to great effect. The structure for The Homebase Garden at RHS Chelsea this year is simple but architectural, reflecting the theme of the garden. A series of trees, hedges and domes give it a dynamic backbone from which the rest of the garden flows.
my first Chelsea garden in 2007 and this year will be the eighth garden I have designed there. Winning my first Gold Medal was a completely surreal experience. It just wasn’t on my radar. I have won six Gold Medals now and it is still a totally unexpected experience.” Last year at the show he also had the privilege of meeting The Queen. “I have never thought of myself as a royalist,” he adds, “but it was an amazing experience. It just blew me away.”
2. Give your garden a focal point A series of well-positioned focal points encourage a journey through the garden. Use a feature such as a statue, a building or a seat to draw the eye to a certain point. At Chelsea this year, I’ve created a striking steel structure at the rear of the garden, two water walls leading into pools and a long boarded path winding through the centre of the garden to really draw you into the space. 3. Repeat plants If you love plants, you may be tempted to buy one of everything. Don’t. There
is strength in repeated form. Look at any Chelsea border and you’ll see the same plants repeated over and over again. Plant them in groups to get the best visual effect. If you’re unsure where to begin, the Chelsea Collection at Homebase will give you a head start. It’s a range of plants and seeds inspired by my design for this year’s Chelsea Flower Show and will give you some great ideas to get you started. 4. Make it a usable space Above all, a garden should be a usable outdoor space. Include places to sit and paths to meander through it. I’ve designed the Homebase garden as a space for the whole community including two pools of water that can double as paddling pools and plenty of seating throughout. But even if you’re just designing it for yourself, make sure you work in a shady place to sit and enjoy the view. 5. Have fun Finally, make it fun! Create a garden that you want to go into, sit and read the paper or enjoy a glass of wine. Remember, your garden is there to be enjoyed for years to come.

LEARN TO… Play Hockey RATRTRTRQTQ
Try something new…
Chelmsford Hockey Club, Kirsty Dailly, back row far left
There’s no better time to start playing hockey as Back to Hockey returns from May 11 to June 15 with Phoenix and Chelmsford Hockey Clubs opening their doors to women across the county, all with the aim to do one thing: getting more women back playing.
B
ACK to Hockey is partnering with Sport England’s ‘This Girl Can’ campaign, a national programme celebrating active women around the country. For six weeks, women will be able to pick up their sticks and discover fitness, fun and friendship through relaxed and informative sessions catering for those who haven’t picked up a stick in years to those wanting to play for the first time. Beverley Blackburn, England Hockey’s Participation Manager and hockey coach of seven years, says: “It’s an exciting time to come back to hockey as so many women have been inspired by the ‘This Girl Can’ campaign and want to give the sport a try in their back garden. We welcome all abilities and are keen to show that hockey has come a long way from the days of muddy pitches and waiting around for a touch of the ball! England and Reading Forward and Youth Sport Trust Mentor, Alex Danson,
adds: “Hockey is such a brilliant game for not only improving overall fitness and agility, but is also a great way for women of all abilities to come together and enjoy keeping active with like-minded people. Playing is a great way for women to tone up – the low body position combines both core and leg workouts, improving strength and stability.” To give you some inspiration and to get you playing, we spoke with Kirsty Dailly who took up hockey again after 25 years and England forward Hannah Macleod about their love of the game.
CASE STUDY: KIRSTY DAILLY Forty-year-old Kirsty Dailly was inspired to take up hockey by watching the 2012 Olympics. Working as a Games Maker at the Paralympic games she got to watch Team GB during their training and in awe of the athleticism of the players it inspired her to take up the sport again, having not played for 25 years “I got to watch some outstanding sports performances. I was so impressed with the hockey players as the game nowadays is completely different to how I remembered it at school. Standing around freezing in those horrible gym shorts was not fun for anyone, but watching Team GB really inspired me to get involved again!” comments Kirsty, who runs the charity Georgia’s Teenage Cancer Appeal and also volunteers for Homestart Chelmsford. After watching Team GB that summer the mum
of four from Ingatestone, Essex, began following some of the hockey players on Twitter to chart their Olympic journey, and it was a tweet from England and Holcombe defender, Dan Fox that first introduced Kirsty to Back to Hockey. “I saw that Dan had retweeted a post from Chelmsford Hockey Club, advertising their Back to Hockey sessions and whilst I was intrigued, I wondered whether it really would be ‘back to hockey’ and back to basics as I thought. “I messaged Dan and he told me that I should definitely get involved with the sessions – he even told me that if I were still playing by Christmas (I’d started in September 2012) he’d send me a free hockey stick, so that definitely spurred me on and low and behold he did!” adds Kirsty. Since joining the Back to Hockey sessions in September 2012, Kirsty has now been playing for and captains the Chelmsford Ladies 5s team and also joins in with the club’s summer hockey leagues.
Her team, half of whom also regularly attend the Back to Hockey sessions, have been promoted for the second year running and Kirsty credits the sessions with getting her back into the sport. “Knowing how much I loved the sessions, I was keen to involve more of my friends so I started recruiting more and more ladies to join Chelmsford and it’s really taken off! We’ve had over 30 women involved in Back to Hockey and we’ve even had to set up another Ladies team full of Back to Hockey members in order to accommodate our growing number of players – it’s been fantastic!” adds Kirsty. For anyone looking to join Back to Hockey this year, Kirsty has these words: “The sessions are great for women who like me, haven’t played in years or even those who haven’t played at all. The coaches are incredibly supportive and it really is a great way of improving your fitness, whilst having fun with your girlfriends.”
CASE STUDY: HANNAH MACLEOD, ST ALBANS AND ENGLAND FORWARD What are main fitness benefits of playing hockey? “Hockey is great for improving all round fitness; the game involves repeated sprints and constant changes of direction which allow you to work on agility as well as endurance. Body position is also crucial during play - the low position of the game allows you to work on your core, trunk and upper leg strength and stability – so there’s no more need for those endless squats and sit-ups to tone up!” Do you have any tips for beginners who have never played before? “Even more so than your fitness, it’s incredibly important to make sure you master the basic stick skills and how to hold a hockey stick correctly - once you’ve mastered a soft right hand on the stick and how to turn it over in your hands you will be ready to refine your dribbling, hitting and tackling skills. You’ve got to have good hand-eye coordination in hockey, so practising these skills as much as you can during the early stages of learning
will definitely add to your ability.” Do you have any rituals/ superstitions? “I think we have more as a team than I do individually. We have to sit in the same place in the changing room, use the same warm-up partner and stand in the same spot for the National Anthem.” Why do you support Back to Hockey? “It’s such a great, friendly way to get more people involved in the sport. The training sessions are ideal for those who have never played or who haven’t played in years as the coaches take you through the basic skills involved and from this you can apply these to drills and small-sided match play. Back to Hockey is perfect for anyone looking to get involved in a team sport, improve their fitness or make new friends, I’d thoroughly recommend it. Film still from Far From the Madding Crowd, 20th Century Fox
A novel
Are you inspired by the writings of Thomas Hardy and looking forward to seeing the new film based on his story Far From the Madding Crowd, released in cinemas tomorrow?
N
OW you can follow in the footsteps of the famous author with walking holiday specialist Alison Howell’s Foot Trails. The 19th century novelist and poet was born at Higher Bockhampton and lived for much of his life in Dorset, which formed the heart of the ‘Wessex’ setting for his best known works. Many of the settings for his novels, as well as his idyllic thatched cottage birthplace and last home Max Gate (now both owned by the National Trust), can be visited today. Explore on foot the countryside that inspired the writings of the author and visit the towns, villages and rural pastures once travelled
by Hardy and his characters, many of which provided many locations for the new film. On Tess’s Journey (Hardy’s Tales), walkers can trace the steps of the heroine of Tess of the d’Urbervilles on a peaceful, timeless, self-guided wander through a rarely walked land-scape. The inn-to-inn tour follows the river Stour, with its kingfishers and herons, and calls at Marnhull, a village Hardy renamed as Marlott for his tragic tale. It also passes through the Saxon hilltop town of Shaftesbury – or Shaston in the author’s stories – which will also feature in the new movie. The tour is available as a four-, five- or six-night trip, from £565 per person. Truly Madly Deeply Dorset also takes in Hardy country,

For the latest on the property market
@What_House
Isn’t it iconic? Work is well underway to transform one of the capital’s most-loved buildings into the hub of a brand new community
T
here can be few buildings in London – particularly industrial ones – that instil as much affection in the capital’s residents and visitors as Battersea Power Station. Since it was decommissioned in the early 1980s, many Londoners will have looked on with despair as numerous ambitious plans to repurpose the iconic structure – including as a theme park or football stadium – fell by the wayside. With each successive aborted project, the Grade II listed giant fell into greater disrepair. Thankfully, some 30 years after it last produced electricity, the power station and the 42-acre site on which it sits are being transformed by a multibillion-pound regeneration scheme. The master plan, by New York-based architect Rafael Viñoly, provides nearly 4,000 new homes, 250 shops bars and cafés, three hotels, over three million square feet of office and commercial space, and new public open spaces. Work is surging ahead on the first phase, located between the power station and the Victoria railway lines. The chimneys – among the most recognisable features on any city skyline in the world – are being brought down and carefully rebuilt to exacting heritage standards. One of the chimneys has already been completely removed, and when its replacement has been assessed, the other three will follow and their brand new doppelgangers will restore the building to its familiar shape by the end of 2016. All this, along with the wider Nine Elms regeneration scheme going on around it, will be served by a new extension to the Northern Line and a proposed new bridge over the Thames to Pimlico. Thames Clipper services will also stop at the jetty in front of the power station, utilising the river to offer speedy links east and west. Battersea’s reputation – somewhat unjustified – as being difficult to get to will certainly have to be reappraised when these are all in place. The Battersea Power Station Development Company (BPSDC) says it aims “to build a strong, robust and sustainable community” on the site, which will encompass over 560 ‘affordable homes’ and encourage local, independent businesses to make a vibrant and individual new ‘high street’ that won’t be swamped with
all-too-familiar brands. Public leisure facilities will include a six-acre park that opens up the riverfront and Thames Path riverside walk. There will also be public squares and recreation areas across the site and the power station’s northwest chimney will incorporate a transparent passenger lift and 360-degree viewing platform over 100m above ground, which is sure to be a major tourist draw. The power station building will also house an entertainment zone and 2,000 capacity auditorium. Residents will have an even wider range of amenities to utilise. There’s a 5,000-sq-ft Residents’ Club that will include a bar, private dining, library and cinema while many of the residential blocks will incorporate a communal roof garden for the exclusive use of those who live there, each offering far-reaching views across London. BPSDC has enlisted a team of world-class architects to provide a new range of draw residents and visitors to this new community. Big names such as dRMM, Wilkinson Eyre, Foster + Partners and Gehry Partners will each bring their own distinctive creativity to different phases of the site with some truly striking buildings and spaces. For example, the centrepiece of Gehry’s project is an angular tower called The Flower while Foster + Partners have commissioned the designers of New York’s High Line urban park to landscape a 355m roof garden on their building. So far, three phases of properties have been released at the development. At Phase 1, the Ian Simpson Architectsdesigned Circus West, only penthouses remain for sale, priced from £7m. At Phase 2 – the power station building itself – two-bed apartments start at £2.75m, while at Phase 3, Frank Gehry’s Prospect Park and the Foster-designed Battersea Roof Gardens, prices for a one-bedroom property start at £1.006m. The first residents will move into Circus West next year, along with the first wave of shops and amenities. The Northern Line Extension, which will connect new stations at Battersea Power Station and Nine Elms to Kennington, is set to be ready by 2020 and the whole regeneration project is scheduled for completion in 2025. It is a gold ‘Aureus’ struck in 15-13 BC, featuring both Augustus, the Emperor and a butting bull. This Augustan Aureus is priced at £32,000. In 2013 an Aureus from 15-13 BC was auctioned for US $425,500, 227% up on its $130,000 estimate. Another, with a unique heifer design, sold for £300,000 in 2014. Agents come up gold Mortgage Business wins award at The ESTAS, the most prestigious awards in the UK property industry sponsored by Zoopla Property Group
T
he Brentwood based advisers received the Gold Award in the Best Regional Independent Mortgage Broker category at the national ESTAS Awards 2015. The award was announced by Phil Spencer, the TV property expert at a lavish luncheon & ceremony at the Hilton Park Lane London attended by 800 of the UK’s top property professionals. The awards, celebrating their 12th year are known throughout the industry as The ESTAS. The ESTAS determine the best independent mortgage brokers in the UK through research carried out amongst clients
who are asked a series of questions about the service they have received from their broker, over 25,000 questionnaires were completed by customers during the competition. Phil Spencer, who has hosted the ESTAS every year since their inception in 2003 said “The ESTAS are about making people happy, putting a smile on their face and making a genuine difference to peoples’ lives. A broker’s role is about guiding people through one of the most stressful times in their lives and that’s not an easy job. The ESTAS help brokers to
focus on customer service levels and that’s why firms keep coming back year after year”. Simon Brown who owns the ESTAS said “The ESTAS are special because shortlisted and winning firms are selected purely on the service they deliver to their clients. In fact just taking part shows a mortgage broker’s commitment to their customers and to be shortlisted is a great achievement in itself. For the winners this is the highest accolade they can receive in the industry.” David Oastler, partner at Mortgage Business said “We are absolutely thrilled to
be recognised at this year’s ESTAS. It means so much to us as we know it’s our clients who have judged our performance. We take our levels of customer service very seriously because we know clients have a choice. We have always been very proud of the personal service we provide and this proves we are delivering what we promise.”
Alex Chesterman, Founder & CEO of headline sponsor Zoopla Property Group said “This is our sixth year of sponsoring the ESTAS and we are delighted to be once again supporting this key industry event. The ability to collect and act on customer feedback is essential to the success of any business and rewarding those who provide the best service in the industry, as
these awards do, is perfectly aligned with our business. Congratulations to all of this year’s winners”. The Awards are organised by Awards for Business Ltd. www.theestas.com For more information contact Awards For Business on 01892 610245.
Dream move
Moving house needn’t be a nightmare just make your move with Belvoir. Made in Essex speak to Belvoir Basildon’s new Franchisee and director Keeley Taylor
With 16 years of lettings industry experience, and five years working for Belvoir, 30-year old Keeley Taylor was the perfect candidate to take over as franchisee of the Belvoir Lettings Franchise in Basildon. She is now director of Belvoir Basildon which covers the territories of Basildon, Romford and Southend-on-Sea. Her loyalty to the Belvoir brand and love for all things lettings meant that she elected to take over the business when the franchise became available. “It really felt like the right step for me when I was offered the chance to become the Franchisee,” she explains, “having worked at the office in Basildon since 2006 (primarily when it was known as ‘Let it Be and then as part of Belvoir when it was bought out by them in 2010). The company initially started nine years ago and it was just the director and me at that time. We had no properties and strived to create and grow a client-base. Since then the business has grown tremendously.” Keeley’s contacts have held her in good stead. “I’ve worked at the office for so long so I have some great relationships with the existing
landlords and tenants and it’s fabulous to be able to build the business and guide it in a new direction.” Keeley is just one of many new franchise owners for Belvoir who have been a successful lettings agency with an award winning service for nearly two decades. Offices across the UK such as the one Keeley runs in Basildon, are individually owned by local people, which the company believe ensures the best combination of knowledge and marketing effectiveness, such as the franchisee’s familiarity with the local schools and facilities; knowing the better areas to live in and why some houses are more attractive to locals whilst others will attract newcomers to an area. “I always felt strongly supported by the staff and the management at Belvoir’s Central Office and have good relationships with them, so the decision to become a franchisee once the possibility arose was an easy one,” Keeley says. “I couldn’t wait to be part of a network. I would recommend anyone looking into a Lettings Franchisee role to contact Belvoir’s head office in Grantham, they’ve been fantastic.” Keeley adds: “I am very enthusiastc about growing Belvoir Basildon and its future.”

In the spotlight: Tower Hamlets are beginning to slow down, however, with prices dropping 3.3% last month. Although the numbers vary between sources, recent figures suggest the average property price in Tower Hamlets is £544,893, with flats selling for £423,196, terraced homes for £727,382 and semi-detached properties for £584,086. Tower Bridge is the most expensive area here, while Lansbury is the cheapest.
WILL CROSSRAIL HAVE A BIG EFFECT?
This month we take a look at Tower Hamlets, one of London’s most active boroughs in terms of regeneration. WHERE IS IT? Tower Hamlets is located to the east of the City of London and north of the River Thames. Tower Hill, Whitechapel, Wapping, Bethnal Green, Stepney, Mile End, Bow and the majority of the Docklands area including Shadwell, Limehouse and Canary Wharf all fall within its boundaries.
WHO LIVES THERE? The 2011 Census survey found Tower
Hamlets had the fastest growing population of any local authority in the country, with an increase of 29% since 2001. The total population is now estimated to be in the region of 272,000.
WHAT DO HOUSES WHAT IS THE POLITICAL COST? LANDSCAPE LIKE? In the year to May 2014, Of the 45 councillors in the borough, Labour boasts 22 seats; the Tower Hamlets First party has 18; and the

Goodman’s Fields, by Berkeley Homes Aldgate
“The market in Tower Hamlets is currently very strong in the £500-£600 per sqft bracket. There is a very strong demand for purchasers seeking good quality new-build stock close to transport links who have been priced out from other areas.”
Carl Schmid, owner of Fyfe Mcdade “The borough of Tower Hamlets has boomed in the past two years thanks to areas like Bethnal Green and Bow, which offer a vibrant atmosphere and good transport links, combined with a lack of pretension and relative affordability against their trendier counterparts. You can still get a decent twobedroom flat in these areas for under £500,000, while you’d only get a one-bedroom home in Hackney for the same price.”
Conservatives have five. The borough has experienced significant political controversy in recent years, and petitioners are currently attempting to have the 2014 poll rerun.
Tower Hamlets saw the biggest price hike of any London borough – a whopping 43.1%. There are signs that things The latest phase here, Kingswood Gardens, has recently been launched, with prices starting at £735,000. Comprising over 920 studio, one-, two- and three-bedroom apartments and penthouses, Goodman’s Fields is arranged across seven acres and within walking distance of the City, Whitechapel, Shoreditch and Old Street. Goodman’s Fields boasts fivestar hotel-standard facilities for the private use of its residents, including an on-site indoor pool, spa, stateof-the-art gym, private cinema and business lounge. Yes. Recent research by JLL found that Whitechapel homeowners will enjoy the biggest increase in house prices – 54% over the next five years – of any London stop on the new Crossrail line. Crossrail is set to be completed by 2019, cutting journey times to Heathrow to just 39 minutes, and Canary Wharf to just three minutes. Price increases in Whitechapel are already outstripping those in central London, and there are various residential schemes either under construction or with planning permission that aim to deliver nearly 1,900 units in the coming years.
WHAT ARE THE CURRENT PROPERTY TRENDS? Tower Hamlets is very popular with second-home buyers, with council tax records in 2014 showing 5,003, or one in 22 homes, are not registered as the main residence of their owners. The figure reflects the significant number of Canary Wharf and City employees living in London during the working week before heading to their family home at the weekend.
ARE THERE ANY REGENERATION PROJECTS UNDERWAY? The large-scale regeneration of the borough continues apace, with a range of new schemes in the pipeline.
Bishopsgate goods yard The Bishopsgate goods yard regeneration hopes to bring 2,000 new homes to the area over the next 10-15 years.
Fish Island In the east, the council aims to bring 3,000 new homes to Fish Island, close to the Olympic Park. The area is a key component of the plan to develop the wider Hackney Wick area.
Leopold Estate, St Paul’s Way There are plans afoot to regenerate the Leopold Estate, replacing old blocks with 470 new private sale and affordable homes.
Blackwall Reach The Blackwall Reach regeneration programme will transform Poplar and bring nearly 1,600 new homes to the local area.
Wood Wharf Wood Wharf is one of the largest proposed regeneration schemes in London, with plans afoot to build up to 4,500 new homes, a school and community centre.
Millharbour A proposal for 900 apartments in Millharbour was deferred by the council last month, with 35 objections putting a temporary stop to the plans to build a 42-storey tower.
Royal Quay, by Regal Homes Limehouse Comprising 90 studio, oneand two-bedroom apartments, the scheme occupies a former warehouse overlooking the Limehouse Cut – London’s oldest canal. Royal Quay combines canalside living with industrial chic architecture; original brickwork facades juxtapose contemporary design flourishes for optimum style, while courtyards provide centre points for residents. Local pubs include Charles
Dickens’ favourite The Grapes, and The Narrow – owned by Gordon Ramsay. Transport links from Limehouse and Westferry deliver commuters to Canary Wharf and the City in minutes. Prices at the development start from £250,000, offering unrivalled affordability for a central London location. Find out more at www.regal-homes.co.uk; 020 7328 7171

In 2018, Crossrail will add to Stratford’s impressive public transport connections, which include National Rail, HS1, DLR, tube and numerous bus routes. Harry Handelsman, chief executive of Manhattan Loft Corporation, says: “We are delighted to be collaborating with Harrods Estates within the iconic Harrods department store. There is no better window in London in which to showcase Manhattan Loft Gardens and no better way to underscore the quality of our development.” Manhattan Loft Gardens is due to complete in 2018. One- and twobedroom apartments are available from £615,000. Find out more at www.harrodsestates.com; 020 7225 6700

It’s all going to pot... Use pots or containers filled with flowering plants, herbs or vegetables to brighten up your garden, says Richenda Oldham

T
here are many advantages to growing plants in containers. The biggest benefit undoubtedly is that you can move the plant to anywhere you choose, which is particularly useful if the plant needs shade or sun.
CHOOSING A POT OR PLANTER You’ll be spoilt for choice when looking for a plant container. Make sure that whatever you choose is large enough for the plant and has a hole in the bottom to allow drainage. Pick a style that suits the style of your garden and check that any terracotta pots you pick are frost-proof. Although plastic containers are inexpensive and retain moisture, you will need to protect roots in the winter from freezing. Bear in mind the final weight of a fully planted pot, which will be harder to move. If you are worried about being able to move your pots around, choose lightweight containers, such as resin, fibreglass and plastic, which are not so porous.
PLANTING UP Choose your planting mix carefully, as it must be capable of holding water and yet porous enough to drain well. There are plenty of commercial multipurpose potting mixes to choose from and you can improve them by adding water-retaining crystals, which provide water when the plant needs it. Don’t use soil from the garden, as it can have weed seeds, insects and fungal diseases. To prevent the compost from blocking the hole at the base of the pot, cover it with a layer of broken terracotta shards. You can also purchase terracotta feet to raise pots off the ground when you display them on a patio, which will aid drainage and stop moisture building up at the roots.

CARING FOR YOUR PLANTS Plants that are grown in containers will need frequent watering to prevent them drying out. You will also need to feed the soil, as watering will wash the plant food away.
HERE ARE SOME IDEAS TO GET YOU STARTED: • Glazed pots • Stone pots • Wooden tub planters • Zinc double handled troughs • Painted terracotta containers or pots
• Galvanised metal pots • Concrete urns • Copper bowls • Ceramic pots • Wooden crates

And the little one said “Roll over...”
Children need more dedicated storage room as they grow older, so a bed with built-in storage underneath is ideal; Clamber Doodle bed, £1195, www.loaf.com
It’s good to plan ahead when buying a bunk bed – choose a design that can convert into two single beds ready for when the bunk beds are no longer required; Stowford bunk, £595, www.aspace.co.uk
Paint the walls of your child’s room in neutral colours and then use colourful wall stickers that can be peeled off when no longer required; London Bus and Taxi wall border, £22, www.kokokids.com
For many children, their bedroom is their special den, so make it as fabulous as possible with fun accessories that will inspire them; Buddy Whale rug, £189, www.kelaty.com
Richenda Oldham consults her inner child on how to create cool bedrooms for children
D
esigning a bedroom for your child has to be one of the best parts of being a parent. This is a strictly-for-fun job, whether you are creating a nursery for a baby or hangout space for an older child. While nursery furniture and cots for babies are adorable and almost irresistible, do try to remember that babies grow up fast; a cute, tiny bunny-painted chest of drawers and matching chair will not meet the needs of an active six-year old. So if you do want to indulge yourself with a fullblown nursery, budget for a makeover in least five years’ time...
Although pastels are adorable for the new addition, brighter, bolder accessories are funkier and more likely to be appreciated by an older child.
COLOUR
BEDS
When choosing colours for walls, try not to get too hung up on pink for girls and blue for boys. It is perfectly acceptable to paint the walls a neutral shade and then add colour through accessories, such as curtains, cushions, rugs and furniture.
It’s easy to see why bunk beds are so popular when many children’s bedrooms are often the smallest room in the house. Plus, children love sleeping up high, and if they don’t share the room with a sibling, it makes inviting friends for a sleepover
ARTWORK Wall stickers are brilliant for adding instant interest without the cost or commitment of wallpaper and can be removed without damaging the paint beneath. Try to discourage posters stuck to the walls with Blu-Tack, which will pull the paint off. Instead, encourage children to display their posters or artwork in frames, which can be bought inexpensively from many large supermarkets or DIY stores.
much easier. Cabin beds and high sleepers are practical space savers (as well as lots of fun) and can come with desks, storage and seating, all within the footprint of the bed. Alternatively, there are some amazing bed designs to choose from, including castles, racing cars, caravans, camper vans, tents, forts...
FINISHING TOUCHES Good storage is essential if you are to maintain any sense of order in your child’s bedroom as they grow older and accumulate more stuff. Colourful baskets can be used to pack away toys and books – put them either beneath a standard single bed or in a corner. Themed duvet sets are excellent for creating a new theme without committing to redecorating the whole room. Use blackboard paint on a section of wall to make an area where you child can express their ideas in chalk. Memo boards are also good for displaying a child’s treasures.

That’s entertainment! Octagon’s magnificent 48 Totteridge Common shows the way for seriously luxurious fun at home
O
ctagon has made its name, and won a (champagne) bucket full of awards to boot, on the back of its unerring eye for what homebuyers at the very top of the market are looking for in a home. The company specialises in one-off homes that, while often traditional in architecture, are at the forefront of interior specification and technology. David Smith, marketing director for Octagon, has seen trends change constantly over the years as buyers aim ever higher for the very latest innovations. He says: “The now obligatory cinema and media rooms, leisure suites with indoor pools, spa facilities and gyms are getting more fabulous as we go from year to year. Our Totteridge house is a perfect example, which comes complete with a glass bridge linking the leisure wing to the main house, mosaic-tiled steam and sauna units, a glass-walled gym with the very latest equipment, and a wonderful games den with retro video and pin table games. “But Octagon clients like to always go one – or should I say six – steps further. So starting outside, we have supplied private, all-weather jogging tracks circumnavigating the grounds and Russian-style bathhouses built outside in the garden, with all the correct Finnish timber sourced for the walls. “Elsewhere, we have a beer pump for draught ales fitted in the relaxation room bar, tasting rooms outside the custom-built wine cellars, irrigated freshwater ponds for the owners’ rare
fish collections, and outdoor heated swimming pools (often infinity) with retractable water fountains, so as the sun sets, and the pool and garden lights go on, they can enjoy a mini ‘Versailles’ vista in their back garden.” Approach up the tree-lined drive and step inside 48 Totteridge Common – a one-off residence that has taken two years to build and which is currently being marketed for £16m – and you enter a world that is perfect for both relaxed family living and grand entertaining. Quality and elegance pervades every room, thanks to exquisite decoration and furnishings by Rachel Beckett of R Interiors. The spectacular double-height main entrance hall has a classic marble floor and a specially commissioned Italian chandelier that cascades from the top of the house, while the broad sweep of bespoke carpeted marble stairs and lofty, full-height windows add aristocratic ambience. A discreetly positioned passenger lift serves all three levels of the house, which will definitely find favour with owners and staff alike. On the ground floor the super-size kitchen has an informal dining area, a large island breakfast bar, bespoke painted cabinetry, a hidden walk-in pantry, and impressive range of builtin Wolf and Gaggenau appliances. A drawing room, family room and formal dining room provide plenty of options for relaxing or entertaining. If there’s a big party on the horizon, why not get the caterers in, who can use the lower-level professional kitchen. (Ed Miliband’s not the only one who can benefit from two
kitchens!) Fitted out with commercial stainless steel appliances, it is linked to the upper-level kitchen by an electrically operated dumb waiter. Also on the lower level are the temperature-controlled wine cellar and home cinema, where you and your guests can sit back into reclining leather seats as the latest blockbuster starts to play on the giant 10ft-wide screen. Your butler can quietly mix exquisite vodka martinis behind a backlit onyx cocktail bar to the rear. A huge glass window on one wall of the kitchen overlooks the 10-metre indoor swimming pool and comprehensive spa and leisure suite, with gym, steam room/sauna and changing room with shower. The games room is kitted out with a purple pool table alongside the retro games. The luxury continues upstairs with five en suite bedrooms, all with plenty of custom-built fitted storage, while the master bedroom suite has a spectacular marble-clad bathroom and a mahogany-lined walk-in dressing room. At the top of the tower, with three viewing windows and an extended roof space, is a space that is ideal as an office or studio ‘eyrie’. Outside are three acres of grounds with areas of lawn, formal landscaping, woodland and terracing, and there is a self-contained two-bedroom apartment for staff or independent family member above the four-car integral garage. Of pensions, conspiracy theories, tax and elephants As pension reforms kick in, finance expert Lawrence Watts considers their implications HOW TO SPOT AN before taking a mind excursion... ELEPHANT
I
thought it was the right time to discuss pension liberation, announced by George Osborne in last year’s Budget, and coming into force from 6 April this year. From there, my mind wandered to a couple of other linked issues concerning government policy on this issue and how far the lengths to set up tax avoidance schemes have gone. Bear with me!
PENSIONS For years, the default retirement position for any personal pension savings was the pension annuity. You invest a lump sum with a pension company and they promised either a level or increasing pension for the rest of your life, and with the insurance compensation scheme, the annuity was practically guaranteed by government.
In the 1990s, a £100,000 pension fund would buy a level pension of circa £11,400 per year for a 65-yearold life. In 2015, the same lump sum will buy you £4,950. The new position for ‘personal pensions’ is that once you turn 55 (eventually to be 57), you can take 25% of your pensions savings (normally, but sometimes more or less) as tax-free cash (but now called the ‘pension commencement lump sum’ – note the words “tax-free” have disappeared) and the rest you can take as income and pay tax, depending on your marginal rate. If you manage your pension properly, it should pay out an income for life and, on your death, it could provide either an income or lump sum to your spouse and, potentially, to your children. My view is that, for many people, leaving a pension to their children will be a big draw, rather than the current position where the annuity usually dies with you and your spouse/partner. Children will be able to draw on your pension at their rates of tax in their lifetime. This is a significant change. Others will surrender their pension and invest in property. Remember that, apart from the tax-free lump sum, the rest is taxed at 0%, 20%, 40% and 45%. You could spread your taxable income over many years, after taking the tax-free lump sum, to reduce/avoid tax by keeping as close as possible to your lowest possible marginal rate. Or, in other words, try not to take large
lump sums that push you into a higher tax rate. You cannot gift your pension to a lower rate tax-paying spouse. The bigger picture could be for those in public and private sector pension schemes that offer a ‘defined benefit’, inflation-linked, guaranteed pension. Imagine you were offered an inflation-linked pension of £12,000 per year at 60, or a transfer lump sum instead, of say, £450,000 (and that is the roughly the amount of pension savings you would need to buy a £12,000 inflation-linked pension), from which you could take tax-free cash of £112,500, and rightly or wrongly, the temptation to buy that Porsche could be irresistible. Furthermore, you could then arrange to gift some/all of your lump sum to the children on your death. In particular, if you were in ill health and knew your mortality was shortened, wouldn’t you be tempted to take the transfer sum for part of your spouse/ children’s inheritance. (NB Just to be clear, not all public sector schemes will offer a transfer value.) With a lump sum of £112,500, you could certainly put a deposit on a buyto-let or two. You could then take the other £337,500 as income over many years, or leave it be.
THE TRUTH IS OUT THERE.... Now this is where I get all ‘Mulder and Scully’. In the 1990s, high annuity rates also paid high income tax receipts to
government. Furthermore, government legislated to make sure annuity providers backed up their annuities with government gilts. Governments then had a steady source of buyers of gilts and index-linked gilts to finance the fiscal deficit. A government regulator, the Financial Services Authority (as it was back then), was very clear on the importance of annuities and, indeed, indexed-linked annuities seemed to be the default compliance position. As a financial adviser, you needed (and still do) to be very careful before recommending anything but an annuity. Suddenly, annuity rates fall, governments buy up gilts via quantitative easing and annuity rates tumble even further, and so do tax receipts. Governments need tax revenues more than ever and the golden goose is dying. So, what can the Exchequer do? Well, they can let everybody take much of their pension now in lump sums; more tax now, and then change the rules to make annuities look even less attractive. Lo and behold, more tax revenue! Much, much later, when tax receipts drop from pensions income, because everybody bought a Porsche when they first retired, a new parliament will need to come up with another way to take revenue from pensioners. We shall see. Lawrence Watts is a chartered financial planner with HBB. Contact 07982 235543, 01727 862477
So much of pension planning centres round tax planning that reminds me of Samwise Gamgee, who was Frodo’s companion on their Middle Earth jaunt. Sam’s abiding desire was to see the famed Oliphant, which was, it turns out, a gigantic elephant. What can be more ridiculous than a creature with huge ears, a long trunk, a tiny tail and two huge tusks, as big as a house and all grey to boot? How can it be? But I guess if you saw an elephant in a room, it would stick out just a bit and the description would ring true. And so, who would have thought that it was possible to gift earned income offshore to a charity, and actually then receive back capital and a huge chunk of tax. Or indeed, opt to be a film producer and as a “trading” film producer, offset losses against your tax bill. What about setting up a music production company that generates losses that you also offset against income. Who would have thought it possible? You see, explaining a tax scheme can be difficult, but when you see one it’s pretty obvious. Tax avoidance schemes are not illegal, but some do seem a little too ridiculous. When was it okay to donate to charity and get your money back with tax? How could investing always lead to a trading loss?

W
HAT is your first food memory? Back in Morocco an extremely popular dish is a meat tajine. It was something I ate regularly while growing up and is one of the fist dishes I remember eating.
Who has influenced your cooking the most? When I was working at Harrods, French chef Paul Bocuse would come in from time to time to help train staff. His classic style and passion for cooking has really influenced the way I cook. Why did you become a chef? From a young age I have always had a passion for food and have seen cooking as more of an art form. Cooking allowed me to unleash my creativity so when the opportunity to become a chef presented itself I went for it. Where did it all begin? Originally I had trained to be a chemist, however when I first moved to the area a relative who was already an accomplished chef, inspired me to chase my dream. I
went to Chelmsford College to study catering and then Havering College to study management. Who are your favourite chefs? Raymond Blanc, I really like his classic presentation when working with traditional food. What is your favourite dish/ ingredient? My favourite dish is lobster. My
favourite ingredient is vanilla. What is your favourite herb? Coriander. Coriander is a herb that goes with most dishes and gives a freshness to food without overpowering the flavour. What’s in your fridge at home? You will find the normal items that most people have in their fridges. I think at the moment I have some

Best cooking tip for a novice? To watch and learn cooking styles from others around you, and listen to the advice they give you. When you are cooking keep your head down and focus on the job in hand.
Your worst kitchen nightmare? To be honest working at the Marygreen Manor, the staff are all hands on and not afraid to work. Fortunately I do not have any kitchen
What’s your last meal on earth, if you had the chance to choose? I would choose herbed rack of lamb with a pomme puree and vegetables because it is absolutely delicious.
REVIEW Iain Johnson samples a taste of history at Marygreen Manor
The history books proclaim that the nation’s most infamous monarch once stayed on the site that is now Marygreen Manor. Back in the 16th century it was the lavish home of an aide to the luckless Catherine of Aragon, but today is a fourstar hotel boasting an award-winning restaurant and exquisite selection of food and regarded by many as ‘one of the top destination restaurants in Essex.’ The ornate period décor incorporating plenty
of dark wood is accentuated by low-lit beam-steadied ceilings, offering more than a whiff of medieval majesty in the aptly named Tudors Restaurant. Much of the core building dates back to the 1600s but even the many features added much later, such as the giant medieval mural adorning the dining room buttress, create a true taste of Tudor England. All that was missing during my visit was people dressed in traditional costume. I had booked a table here for my wife and I for Valentine’s Day and it was perfectly themed up for the romantic occasion. Our table was decorated with a Tudor-esque sea of red on white – I particularly liked the scrollshaped napkin, symbolizing perhaps, a medieval love letter. We were welcomed by the attentive staff with a complimentary Valentine’s Cocktail, a sort of Strawberry Daiquiri with a touch of cherry - delicious! The Valentine’s menu (with four options for each course) was expertly put together by Head Chef Majid Bourote, some of the dishes, or variations on them, also appear on Marygreen Manor’s A La Carte menu throughout the year. The food served was a lesson in
first class execution – something Henry VIII certainly knew a lot about. It’s no surprise that the hotel was voted winner of the Best Hotel Restaurant in Essex Award in 2009 and is holder of two AA Rosettes. I went for the slowly braised belly of pork with apple soup, garlic and port jus - an extremely attractive and tasty appetizer. With my pallet now cleansed by a Champagne sorbet, my main course, Fillet of Beef with A La Carte trimmings, was a safe option (and brilliantly executed too). My wife’s Lobster with Wilted Spinach, Macaroni and Caviar was apparently “heavenly”. I shouldn’t need to describe how good my dessert was – just the name enticed me…Hazelnut Praline Parfait with Chocolate Ice Cream and Brandy Sauce. The setting, the food and the ambience of Marygreen Manor offer diners a fabulous experience. In my view King Henry VIII would have definitely approved. The Tudors Restaurant, at Marygreen Manor in London Road, Brentwood, currently offers a choice of eight menus including Menu Du Jour, A La Carte, Vegetarian A La Carte, Tasting Menu, Sunday Lunch, Lounge Menu, Afternoon Tea and Celebration. Visit www.marygreenmanor.co.uk to find out more or call 01277 225 252 to make a booking.

Of the best skin care tips for this spring!
glowing skin
Get your complexion back to its glowing best with these simple to do tips from Anne Gray leading Essex skin care guru and UK distributor for new, award-winning, marine-based skin care range Spa Technologies
1. Invest in good products – it really does
show in your skin and do your best to avoid harsh chemicals that can dry out the surface and spoil your complexion. There are some great natural products out there now that feed your skin with active ingredients to combat antiageing as well as breakouts, including the US range Spa Technologies which is formulated with sea minerals that help to nourish your skin and keep it healthy.
2.
Make time to exfoliate weekly at home. You can use a gentle scrub working over skin in upward strokes, avoiding dragging around the eye area or simply buff of dead cells with a dry flannel.
3.
Once a week treat your skin – and hair – to a super nourishing treat. Cleanse skin, then smooth Spa Technologies Laminaria Oil, £22, over your face and neck and work into scalp and let the revitalising 100% seaweed oil extracts work their magic for up to 10 minutes. The added ylang ylang and bitter orange extracts also help smooth and soothe dry, tired skin and boost moisture levels of your hair.
4.
Whisk up a healthy veggie smoothie to help your skin glow from the inside out. Try blending a handful each spinach and rocket with cucumber and green pepper slices and a green apple to add sweetness.
Aloe FOREVER More people are turning to alternative natural health care products, and as a result, aloe vera is attracting attention as it can provide many benefits for our health and lifestyle. For more information on ordering products or joining the team please see below.

5.
Ensure that your moisturiser has an SPF in on bright spring days, tinted version doubles up as a light base, try Spa Technologies SPF 45 Tinted Moisturiser, £35.
6.
Cleanse your face morning and night – it only takes two minutes to get into a good routine and boost the benefits of sleep when skin repairs by using a night cream such as Spa Technologies Night Repair serum, £45,with antioxidant ingredients and collagen extracts that help fight damage that pollution and sunlight do during the day.
7.
Pull a face! It might seem silly but the muscles in our faces need a workout too to stop them becoming untoned and saggy. Try saying your vowel sounds in an exaggerated way and feel the stretch in your face, do it when you’re driving when no one will notice!
8.
Had a drink with friends? Enjoy, you only live once but aim to drink a glass of water for every alcoholic drink you have and drink another large glass before you hit the sheets.
9.
Get out in the fresh air: our skin needs oxygen to breathe and look good. Aim to get out for a brisk, revitalising walk twice a day for 10 minutes.
10. Spoil yourself and make time for a salon treat every six weeks or so, even if it’s for a mini facial just to keep your skin glowing! For further information and to order products visit spatechnologiesuk.com or call Freephone 0800 804 8808. A close relationship is showing signs of strain. Resist the temptation to downplay serious questions. A heart to heart discussion about intimacy, finances and the future will reveal some surprising information. Face the truth of the situation. Sugar coating problems will only make them worse. Let down your guard. A show of compassion will make you realise a future together is possible if big changes occur. Look for ways to ease your partner’s workload whenever possible.
You’ve been having lots of fun, but can’t linger over a romance any longer. There’s lots of work to be done. Put your relationship on hold while you pay bills, spend quality time with friends and relatives and catch up on routine responsibilities. The longer you put things off, the more irksome they become. You radiate charm and allure, which makes an attentive lover even more ardent. Absence makes the heart grow fonder. Acting elusive will pave the way for a passionate reunion.
LIBRA September 24th - October 23rd
Financial matters are weighing on your mind. You will have to scale back your social activities to save money. Fortunately, you can still have fun while staying home. Invite friends over for a potluck dinner, game of cards or movie night. If anyone asks why you’re not making the rounds of parties, be honest. True friends will understand and appreciate your position and respect your sound common sense. An exciting career opportunity is on the horizon. Explore jobs involving art or luxury goods.

TAURUS April 21st - May 21st
LEO July 24th - August 23rd
Powerful emotions cannot be ignored. Dealing with anger and sadness can be difficult and heartrending, but helpful. Once you acknowledge what is troubling you, it will be possible to find ways to improve your situation. Breaking off an abusive relationship, finding another job and moving to a different area are all options to explore. If you’re completely drained of energy, take a solitary trip to a beautiful place you’ve always enjoyed. This will recharge your batteries and brighten your outlook.
SCORPIO October 24th - November 22nd
Things aren’t moving quickly enough to satisfy you, which is frustrating and annoying. Trying to force the issue will only make matters worse. Make a strategic retreat. Allowing someone to make up their own mind will foster a much more supportive relationship. If you’re tired of waiting, channel your energy elsewhere. Going on a long trip, working on a writing project and taking a challenging course of learning are all good avenues to explore. Find ways to occupy your mind.

A contract or agreement has reached a turning point. You may decide it’s not worth it to maintain a stressful alliance. Breaking away won’t be easy. Friends and family fear for your happiness. Although you want a stable life, you’re not willing to stay stuck in a suffocating situation. A short trip for pleasure will be therapeutic. Take this opportunity to visit a friend who lives in a picturesque town. This change of scenery will bolster your confidence. You can make it on your own. Your work load has become intolerable. Stop accepting new assignments. Although you’re great at multi-tasking, that doesn’t mean you should always be working. You need some down time to collect your thoughts, make plans and reflect on your future hopes. Speeding from one task to another will make you tired and anxious. Don’t risk your health for the sake of a job. Money could arrive unexpectedly. Use it to buy something decadent. You’ve neglected your sensual side for too long.
CANCER June 22nd - July 23rd
Troubling information comes to light. Someone you trusted has been deceptive. This causes you to cast doubt on all your other relationships. Try not to let one bad experience poison your life. Some people are expert at putting on false fronts, but that doesn’t mean everyone is. Fortunately, you are surrounded by loving people who will help you recover from the shock and disappointment. Attending a big party will be a welcome distraction from this stress. Best foot forward!

It feels like you’ve been isolated, maybe even excluded from the crowd. Gaining social acceptance will be harder than you expect. People are wary of your open, honest attitude. Instead of ingratiating yourself with them, look for a new group of friends. Join a club or volunteer organisation. Meeting new people will make you radiate positive energy, which attracts financial luck. Money from a dividend or inheritance will allow you to buy some beautiful luxury items.
Working with a group is frustrating. Everyone wants to do things their own particular way, making no attempt to reach a consensus. It’s up to you to take control of this situation. If you don’t assert leadership, the project will fall apart at the seams. Turn to a powerful ally for help. Once the team sees you have a support system, they’ll stop quarrelling and come together. You might have to eject some of the tiresome rebels. Once this happens, it will be plain sailing.
The career opportunities you seek are few and far between. It’s time to make new plans, if only for the sake of moving forward. Continually beating your head against a brick wall isn’t getting you anywhere. Try a different field. You may have to accept a low level position in the early stages, but don’t worry. Someone with your ingenuity and tenacity will quickly rise through the ranks. Any job involving caring for others is advised. Summon your soft side. It may be necessary to wait on an ailing relative or help a child who is struggling at school. Try not to resent this situation. There’s something very nice about being needed. You should also be very good to yourself at this time. Give yourself small treats. Take frequent naps. Luxuriate in a hot bath. Pamper yourself as much as you like; you deserve it.

All new HR-V from Honda
T
HE all-new Honda HR-V will be one of the most efficient cars in its class and boast an unmatched combination of sought-after attributes when it arrives in showrooms across the UK this summer. As well as dynamic styling, class-leading interior space and versatility, and advanced infotainment and safety technologies, the new HR-V will deliver fuel economy and emissions among the best in its class. It will be offered from launch with a choice of 1.6 litre i-DTEC diesel and 1.5 litre i-VTEC petrol engines, both from Honda’s advanced Earth Dreams Technology series.
“The Honda HR-V created this fast growing market segment back in 1999 and for 2015 the all new HR-V will offer a class leading ownership proposition, refinement, sleek styling, a quality feel as well as being packed to the roof with safety and technology features. “We are confident that the HR-V will perform favourably against its main competitors in this segment, such as the current market leading Nissan Qashqai,” said Leon Brannan, Head of Car, Honda UK. Combining the 1.6 litre i-DTEC diesel paired with a newly-engineered six-speed manual transmission, Honda’s new subcompact SUV will
return fuel economy figures from 71mpg, with CO2 emissions starting from just 104g/km. HR-V customers won’t find performance compromised by the car’s frugality, however, with 118bhp powering the new HR-V from 0-62mph in 10.1 seconds. Petrol buyers can select a 130 PS 1.5 litre i-VTEC engine, achieving combined fuel economy of 54.2mpg and CO2 emissions from 120 g/km when they opt for the CVT automatic transmission. When married with the standard six-speed manual gearbox, the new petrolpowered HR-V delivers fuel economy of 50mpg and CO2 emissions at a highly

competitive 130g/km. Sprightly performance is assured with 62mph reached from standstill in just 10.3 seconds with the manual and 10.9 seconds when equipped with the optional CVT. The new HR-V‘s efficient performance credentials are aided by its design and classleading aerodynamics, with underbody panels optimising airflow. In profile, the HR-V portrays a characterful poise,
Premium quality materials and sophisticated cabin design are blended with the feel of a sporty, enveloping cockpit. Specification highlights include the advanced Honda Connect in-car infotainment system, and a wide range of safety aids employing radar and camera technologies to scan the road ahead. Further details including pricing will be available closer to the new HR-V’s summer launch.

ŠKODA has been given the green light by the International Automobile Federation (FIA), for its new Fabia R5 rally car. Following its successful homologation, the new rally car can now continue the Czech automobile manufacturer’s 114-year motorsport success story on the rally routes of this world. The Fabia R5 is based on Škoda’s new production Fabia and is the successor to the Fabia Super 2000, which went down in history as the most successful rally car in the history of Škoda Motorsport. In compliance with FIA regulations, the ŠKODA Fabia R 5 is equipped with a 1.6-litre turbo engine and the four-wheel drive car also features a five-speed sequential gearbox. Since the start of the project, Škoda Motorsport has invested 15 months of intense development work to fine-tune the car and ensure that the ultra-modern components remain reliable on the tough rally stages.
FIFTY years ago the Peugeot 204 heralded the birth of the stylish, high-quality small cars when it was revealed in Paris on April 22, 1965. Although the stylish Pininfarina designed saloon appeared relatively conservative, its four-door shape cloaked some true innovations. The 204 was the first Peugeot to have the driven wheels at the front. It became the first production Peugeot to have disc brakes and independent suspension all round. But arguably the biggest revolution was in the car’s size. At less than 4m long, the 204 was touted as one of the first examples of the ‘small-medium’ sized segment. The reason that the 204 managed to combine generous interior space with smaller exterior dimensions was helped in part by the layout beneath the bonnet. The transversely mounted engine
had a transverse gearbox located beneath it. This liberated sufficient space for the car to be front-wheel drive. The 1130cc single overhead camshaft petrol engine was made from pressure-moulded aluminium. This kept both cost and weight down. Len Dacruz from South London has owned a 204 for 44 years. He said: “In its day the 204 was a very popular car. It still feels stable, comfortable and fun to drive. It’s very robust too. I found out about the 204 model because I lived in South Africa during the 1960s. Just after its launch, it was entered in the East African Safari Rally where it won its class. Those cars were then shipped back to France where they were stripped down and any problem parts were modified, which helped to make the 204 even more reliable.”

X-Perience set for adventure
L
ESS than a year ago, SEAT launched its first ever estate version of the popular hatchback with the Leon ST. Eager to expand the range of the Leon and create a lifestyle, goanywhere vehicle that would appeal to the adventurous and young-spirited with a penchant for outdoor sports, the X-Perience has been added. The SEAT Leon X-Perience still has the same sleek shape of the estate ST but a lot more has been added to give a more rugged look with addition of protective mouldings for door sills, wheel arches and aluminium skid-plate sections for front and rear bumpers. But probably the biggest change has been the addition of a four-wheel-drive system giving it true off-road credentials. Ground clearance has been raised by 3cm as well and the Haldex 4WD system is a permanently-on-demand, electronically-controlled affair which in normal road conditions send 100% of the power to the front wheels but

TEST DRIVE SEAT Leon X-Perience
SEAT Leon X-Perience performed well. First drive of the day was in the SE Technology version with 184PS engine with DSG automatic gearbox, which at times seemed to get confused as which gear it should be in. Changing from Sport mode to Eco helped a lot and it certainly is a brisk performer with 0-60 time of 7.1 seconds. SEAT predict that the SE Technology model with the slightly less powerful 150PS engine will be the best-seller. Priced at £26,370 it has all the
equipment on board you could want and performance was only marginally reduced with a slightly lower 0-60 time of 8.7 seconds. Fuel consumption for both is identical, with an official figure of 57.6mpg combined and taking readings from the onboard computer, it was recording a reallife figure of 46.3mpg over a 40 mile run. Finally, if you are curious as to what SEAT stands for, it is Sociedad Espanola de Automoviles Turismo.
SsangYong reveal Tivoli range THE SsangYong Tivoli B-segment SUV arrives in the UK this summer with prices starting from just £12,950.
The EX adds the option of automatic transmission on the petrol powered car, (diesel automatic and diesel 4x4 manual are available through the My Tivoli personalisation programme), grey or beige leather upholstery, 18” alloy Spiral wheels, dual zone climate control, 7in touchscreen smart audio system with rear view camera, heated front seats, front fog lights and a luggage load cover. The top of the range ELX is available with the full choice of petrol, diesel, manual and automatic transmission, front wheel drive or 4x4, and features diamond cut alloy wheels, a smart instrument cluster, smart keyless starting, front and rear parking sensors, privacy glass, rear spoiler, automatic headlamps, rain sensing wipers, full TomTom navigation system with 7in touchscreen, rear view camera, and the option of the styling pack and red leather pack via the ‘My Tivoli’ personalisation programme.
“This is a car that will really put SsangYong on the map and change brand perceptions,” says Paul Williams, CEO of SsangYong Motor UK. “By any criteria but especially style, interior finish and value for money, Tivoli stands close scrutiny. “The verdict from those who have already seen and driven the car is that we’re on to a winner. But ultimately it’s the customer who wins: this is a modern, safe, well-built and comprehensively equipped car, and with a price and warranty no one else can match. Anyone considering a small SUV will have to put it on their list.” The Tivoli is extremely well equipped and for simplicity the range comprises three main model options - SE, EX and ELX, while for those who want further individualisation, the My Tivoli programme offers a wide number of further choices. Ssangyong’s Tivoli compact SUV The Tivoli SE starts from just £12,950, and is available with a choice of a 1.6 litre Euro 6 petrol or diesel engine from August with manual transmission. Finished in a smart grey cloth trim, it includes 16in alloy wheels, cruise control, a stop/go system, smart steering with normal, comfort and sport modes, an RDS/ Bluetooth radio and seven airbags.

Montgomery’s late strike sinks Clarets
C
HELMSFORD looked to end the season in style, however an incredible second half – which saw four goals scored – saw them lose 4-3 despite coming from two goals behind. The Clarets made two changes from the team that beat Farnborough 3-1 two weeks ago. Rob Girdlestone and Mason Spence replaced Leon Redwood and Joe Ward. Michael Toner moved to the left side of defence with Hickford replacing his place in central defence. Girdlestone sat in at right-back. The first goal came after fifteen minutes through a set piece. Boreham earned a freekick about ten yards outside of the Chelmsford area. Angol sent a high, curling shot into the top right-hand corner out-of-reach from Lovelock. Chelmsford had a series of chances to level. Finally they took their chance and levelled the game. Rohdell Gordon earned a corner kick on the left hand side, firing in a cross to the far post where MK Dons loanee Harry Hickford headed home to score his first goal in a Claret shirt. However minutes later, despite numerous chances for Chelmsford, the home side conceded a second goal. Graeme Montgomery played in a cross from his wide free kick, which found the head of Wood’s skipper Callum Reynolds who calmly headed in.

Boreham Wood appeared the more dominant side, however Chelmsford almost managed to equalise courtesy of a Wood attack. Boreham had a chance up field although, the ball was cleared to Michael Toner, who sent a pass down the right wing to Mason Spence, who in turn played a pass to Rohdell Gordon who then layed it off towards Cheek before the latter played it across the six yards box but no-one could get the decisive touch. Three minutes after the interval Boreham earned a 3-1 lead courtesy of Junior Morias. The Wood’s striker burst from Ekpiteta with incredible speed before slotting home, underneath keeper Tom Lovelock. With 30 minutes of the second half remaining, Mark Hawkes made his first substitution with Evans Kouassi replacing Hugo Skepelhorn. The former Cypriot Division One player skillfully got past former Claret Ben Nunn before sending the ball across goal to Rohdell Gordon. Rohdell saw his first effort saved by the legs of Russell but Boreham’s keeper couldn’t stop Rohdell’s second attempt. Six minutes later Chelmsford pulled Boreham

Back to Hockey training sessions TWO local hockey clubs are getting involved with the England Hockey campaign Back to Hockey and providing training and experience sessions encouraging men and women to try the game and get fit at the same time. Chelmsford Hockey Club, based at Chelmer Park in Beehive Lane, is holding sessions in May and June. Starting on Wednesday, May 13 they are runnning separate
sessions for men and women from 8.30pm to 10pm for the next six Wednesdays. In Braintree, Phoenix Hockey Club are runnning similar events starting on Tuesday, May 12, with two sessions at 10am to 11am and again at 7.30pm to 8.30pm. The club will be running mixed sessions at club’s ground at The Four Releet, Church Street, Braintree. Designed to create an
informal atmosphere, the sessions allow those new to the game to try it for the first time and for those returning to brush up on their skills with coaches on hand to offer help and advice. The events mix together skills-based exercises with small sided game play with the benefit of taking part in a regular session without the commitment of weekly matches and team selection.
back to level-terms. Leon Redwood picked the ball up twenty-five yards out before firing an impressive shot towards goal and it flew into the top corner. However, with nine minutes of the game
remaining, Boreham stole all three points as Montgomery scored. Boreham took advantage of a Clarets’ back pass. Montgomery raced clear of the trailing defenders and put the visiting side 4-3 up. MATT LEE

send the fans wild in the 10th minute. Romford doubled their lead on forty minutes when a goal kick from Aaron Omand was flicked on twice by Nick Reynolds and then Jack Barry before Joe Scott raced onto the ball and cheekily lobbed the keeper. Right on half time Loui Hazelwood chased a ball down
that everyone thought was going out of play, managing to keep it in and produce a fantastic cross that the keeper palmed down nicely into the path of Nick Reynolds who made no mistake. Ware pulled a goal back when a real scramble in the Romford area was somehow turned in by Khale De Costa. The final whistle sparked wild celebrations in the crowd and on the pitch to celebrate the fantastic job done by the management and playing staff since the setbacks over Easter. GARY REDWIN
Town lose to Swifts after Hunt double BRENTWOOD Town will go into their play-off semi-final against AFC Sudbury without a win in four games after they lost 2-0 to Heybridge Swifts at Scraley Road. With their play-off place already secured, joint-managers Adam Flanagan and Danny Dafter made wholesale changes to Brentwood’s starting line-up. Brentwood settled as the half progressed with teenage striker Connor Hogan looking like their biggest threat, but it was Heybridge who went close again on 22 minutes as Sam West headed powerfully at goal, but Blues’ keeper Sam Cole held on well. Tom Richardson managed to carve out a rare opportunity for Brentwood with a looping header over goalkeeper Danny Sambridge, but Damien Green was on hand to clear the ball away. Brentwood made a positive start to the second half but all of their good work looked set to

be undone seven minutes in when Christian Mbulu conceded a penalty for tugging back Jack inside the box. West took the spot-kick but Cole guessed correctly and made a fine save. Heybridge continued to press, though, and eventually found their way through in the 73rd minute. The ball was knocked across field for Tyler Hayes whose first touch put him in a perfect position to slot through for Hunt and the striker thumped the ball high into the near corner from an acute angle. Hunt put the game to bed with a quickfire second just three minutes later, drilling the ball low past Cole from the edge of the box to seal the points for Cliff Akurang’s side.
Jets defeat puts them on the back foot THE first 10 minutes of the game were very evenly balanced. Ethan and Marcello were called into defend early and Shaun was immense in the middle of the park using his strength to beat his marker on more than one occasion. Braintree though broke the deadlock on 15 minutes with a deflected corner kick that Ben couldn’t get his fingers on. There followed a spell of pressure from the Jets, all pushing forward and Ben making some super saves in goal. Daniel came off to allow

However the Jets did see the back of the net from a Nathan F and Jake D link-up only for the goal to be disallowed. Shaun, having a good game, turned and found Jake D only for the resulting shot to be gathered by the Braintree keeper.
Nathan F came close but immediately, and on the break, Braintree made it two. The Jets were becoming frustrated by their lack of scoring despite having most of the ball and the half ended 3-0 with the Irons scoring again from a breakaway. Ethan’s pass to Daniel saw his long range shot find the Braintree Town keeper and was unlucky not to score from long range efforts and it was Braintree Town’s long range shot that went in to make it 4-0 at the final whistle.

Ashby adds added value
B
RENTWOOD boy Will Ashby marked his first full season as a Leopard by collecting the club’s Most Valuable Player award following the home play-off win against Bradford Dragons. The shooting guard spent a short time with the Big Cats as a junior six years ago but returned to the club from Newham Neptunes in the summer and forced his way into the starting line-up early in the campaign. Ashby was clearly delighted to receive the award, with is voted for by the club’s season ticket holders: “When I asked coach Youngblood if I could come along at the start of the season as play for the team I watched as a kid, I never thought that I’d end up as Most Valuable Player for the league champions,” he said. Forward Dave Ajumobi finished second in the voting after a fine
first season with the Big Cats while captain Albert Margai took third spot. The awards were presented by former Leopards’ chairman Fred Dicker. Meanwhile , the Big Cats have said farewell to point guard Ronnie Baker who has finally retired from playing after a career that spanned 30 years. England’s most capped point guard had a three year spell with the original Leopards between 1995 and 1998 before having two separate spells with the Big Cats since 2009. Following the play-off loss against Kent Crusaders, the 45-year-old was presented with his (still sweaty) Leopards’ vest by club sponsor Jo Cooke and a book about his career put together by several Leopards’ fans and he was also inducted into the Leopards Hall of Fame by former Fred Dicker.

General manager Dave Ryan played tribute to Baker: “Ronnie truly proved that size doesn’t always matter in basketball. It’s been a privilege and an honour to have Ronnie with us, and it will strange not to see him in a Leopards’ vest next season. “The fact that Ronnie turned down a testimonial because he didn’t want to be the centre of attention sums the man up.” DAVE RYAN

Wolves snatch last heat win THE Vortex Lakeside Hammers suffered a disappointing loss, their first at The Raceway this season, as the Wolverhampton Wolves staged a dramatic comeback to snatch a 4446 victory. Unlike their usual early meeting domination, the Hammers found themselves four points down after the first two races. In the opening heat, new GP star Jason Doyle, in for injured Hammers skipper Andreas Jonsson, laid his bike down quickly behind Freddie Lindgren after first bend bunching, which saw Wells excluded. In the rerun, neither Nilsson or Doyle could find a way past the fast-gating Wolves rider. A shared heat 13, left the home team in a strong position, until the previously anonymous Musielak, joined the party, following Karlsson to stun the home crowd with a Wolves 5-1 over Bech and Kennett. Karlsson returned to haunt the Hammers in the nominated race, teaming up with Lindgren to complete a second 5-1 over Nilsson and Schlein, and snatch victory for the away team. The Hammers must regroup ahead of the visit of the table-topping Coventry Bees next Friday.
Hammer time for marathon man WEST Ham United’s first team squad helped this year’s oldest London Marathon runner tune up for the 26 mile challenge by inviting him to the Club’s training ground. Paul Freedman, a 90-year-old Hammers fan from Hornchurch only took up running at the age of 61, but the 2015 London Marathon was his 24th and it will be his fourth time as the oldest runner and the 18th for Saint Francis Hospice. West Ham boss Sam Allardyce was impressed with Paul’s fitness and said: “It’s beyond most people’s comprehension to run a marathon when you’re 60 like me, never mind when you’re 90.’’ “He obviously enjoys it so much and has raised so much money that it’s a
fantastic thing. “With him being a West Ham fan it was a pleasure to have him
here among the lads.” To learn more about the hospice please visit website sfh.org.

BOWLS
Newlyweds back for open day LES and Ann Powell are cutting short their honeymoon to get back to Brentwood on Saturday, May 2, when they will be helping to run taster sessions for would-be lawn bowlers. The pair are members of Brentwood Bowling Club and say their lives have been organised around their bowls diary. Ann, who plays at club and county level, explained: “We postponed our honeymoon because of bowling commitments and then
we had to cut short our holiday or miss the open day which is the club’s most important recruiting event of the year.” The couple will be among a group of volunteers on hand to show newcomers the ropes, supervise trial sessions and answer questions. The open day will get under way at 10am and visitors can turn up without booking. Bowls and other equipment will be provided but they are asked to take flat-soled shoes.
