Chef brothers make the perfect dish Change the way you shop
The Make One Change campaign aims to support small producers and retailers
T Chamberlain’s in Leadenhall Market
AN Essex-based and trained chef has joined a top City of London restaurant as head chef, working for his older brother who is executive chef. Chamberlain’s Restaurant in Leadenhall Market, has announced the appointment of James Jones, younger brother of executive chef Andrew. James trained at Chelmsford College and, like his sibling, honed his skills at Claridge’s. Most recently James has been head chef at Ye Olde White Harte Hotel in Burnham-on-Crouch, but his career also includes head chef roles at The Royal Corinthian
Andrew and James Jones
Yacht Club and the Contented Sole fish restaurant. The brothers, whose father is also a chef, come from a catering family. Their parent, who live in St Lawrence, Essex, met while
working at The Contented Sole in Burnham-on-Crouch in the early 1960s and were married there. James has worked with Andrew on a number of previous occasions and is well acquainted with Ally Dale, who heads up the outside catering and events side of the Chamberlain’s operation - they also worked together at Claridge’s. “Our outside catering business is flourishing,” said Andrew Jones, “and it has become evident that we need to have two separate head chefs, one for each side of the business. And, who better than James, an ex-colleague of both Ally’s and mine.”
HROUGHOUT May, the Make One Change Campaign aims to help boost rural businesses, support small food and drink businesses and bring new customers to independent food stores across the UK. The brainchild of local food and drink website www. bigbarn.co.uk, the campaign hopes to entice customers to make a single change to the way they shop throughout the month. This could be as small as buying a product from a local producer, popping into a nearby farm shop, signing up to a veg box scheme, supporting the local butcher, baker or grocer or boycotting the supermarkets
completely. “With almost 60% of our retail spend made in the supermarkets, it is time to make a change to the way we shop and ensure that small, rural businesses can survive,” explains Anthony Davison, founder of BigBarn. “Shopping locally is not only a more appealing and pleasant experience, but it can also save money,” adds Anthony. “We’re hoping this campaign will be the start of a whole new way of thinking for people and prove that local food is best.” To support the campaign and for ideas of how to get involved visit the website: www.bigbarn.co.uk/makeone-change or follow the campaign on Twitter at #make1change.

The inaugural handover of the unique partnership was to Jason Clatworthy a keen sportsman and purchaser in Century Tower. Jason Clatworthy was hooked by the scheme’s build quality, ease of access to the commercial district of London Liverpool Street Station and the unique location next to ECCC and Virgin Active. Jason stated “I am very excited about taking the keys for my new Apartment in the Jason Clatworthy, right and prestigious Essex Riverside a Virgin Active representative development. This Virgin

Easily Paolo Nutini, his lyrics and style are really moving. I particularly love the song Iron Sky. You are back in the studio again recording, how’s it going?
I am. It’s all so exciting, all the tracks are taking shape really nicely. I’m working with some fantastic people who know the business inside out so I am feeling incredibly positive right now. NEWS SUPPORTING LOCAL BUSINESS
From broom cupboard to booming business Athona Recruitment is a success story to inspire others
W
HEN Stewart London quit a safe job to set up his own business from the lowly beginnings of a broom cupboard in Romford, he hardly dared dream that one day he’d be running one of the recruitment industry’s big success stories from two large offices in Brentwood. But – with a turnover of £29 million in 2014, set to be considerably more by the end of 2015 – that’s just what he’s done. Managing director Stewart, 38, runs Athona Recruitment with his director wife Tina, 41, who admits she had sleepless nights worrying about the venture back in the early days. “We met at work in the late 1990s,” explains Tina. “We were
colleagues for several years for a lovely recruitment company called The Locum Group, which was bought out by Reed Healthcare.” This buy-out was the catalyst for Stewart’s decision to go it alone. “I didn’t want to work for a large corporate,” he explains. “I wanted to be independent. You get real passion with a familyrun business.” Both were recruitment consultants – Stewart worked supplying doctors, Tina was in the healthcare field, supplying speech therapists and audiologists – and by 2003, when Athona began, they were in a relationship. They married in 2004 with a reception at the Marygreen Manor, Brentwood. At first, they worked from an
old government building in the Lunar Business Centre in Romford. “It used to be a broom

cupboard!” laughs Stewart. “It didn’t even have a window. We stayed in Romford for a couple of years – as the business grew, we took on more people, including our first salesperson Dave Clewley, who’s still with us now, 12 years on.” By January 2006, Athona had outgrown its offices and the couple made the move to Brentwood High Street, to office space above the amusements arcade. “I really like Brentwood,” says Tina. “It’s a good central point with a train station, near to the M25, with a good high street.” It didn’t take long to fill two floors, as the couple branched out into the education sector as well. Many couples find it hard to work together professionally, but Stewart and Tina seem to have found the perfect balance. “You learn to separate work from home; that’s the key,” says Stewart. “You talk about the right things at the right time.” Tina agrees: “You have a period of time, when you get home, where you talk about your day. And then you have your dinner and watch TV and don’t talk about it any more. You don’t talk about it at 11pm, and you don’t make decisions at home – you make them at work.” Stewart is a big believer on focusing on the positive. “It’s human nature to have a moan. There will always be, in any business, things that aren’t
quite perfect. But if you just focus on that, then you miss all the things that are good.” The couple love to travel and own a property in Ibiza. Can a husband and wife team ever truly get away from running a joint business, even on holiday? “I’m asked that a lot, and my answer is always yes,” says Stewart simply. “We’re lucky that we’ve got great staff here who allow that to happen. I think that’s great.” Charity work has gradually become a focus for Athona, starting with regular fundraising for Macmillan, including coffee mornings and dress-down days, blossoming into giving the team a target of £10k to raise for Little Havens in 2013-2014. “We’re a sales company, so giving the team a target was the right thing to do,” explains Stewart. The £10k target was exceeded thanks to a charity ball attended by Jodie Marsh and athlete Derek Redmond; a 24-hour sponsored bike ride in the boardroom; a member of staff running the London marathon; and bake sales. This year, staff have nominated two charities, one national and one local – Guide Dogs for the Blind and Saint Francis Hospice. A
pub quiz has already taken place and most recently a Las Vegas themed ball on April 18. Twelve years on from the broom cupboard, what have Stewart and Tina learned? “I’ve learned to listen to what Tina says,” says Stewart. “Often, if I’m 50-50 on something, I will always ask Tina and always get a different view from her, a different perspective.” “I think back to where I worked when I met Stewart,” says Tina, “The feel of that company, a passionate family business, that’s exactly where I wanted to take Athona. I feel that we’ve achieved that. I can honestly say that I remember what it was like to work on that sales floor, so whenever we make decisions about things, I can put myself in our staff’s shoes.” That’s clear by how well the couple treat employees. Incentives range from skiing in Chamonix last year to a short break in Monte Carlo this year. “It’s all about the team,” says Stewart. “That’s the real key. We work really hard to find the right people, whether that’s an experienced recruitment consultant or someone coming in on an apprenticeship.” What’s next for Athona? “We’re taking the business international this month,” says Stewart. “That’s big news for us – we’ll start to recruit from around the world.” Global expansion, from the heart of Brentwood. I have worked with Dr Liakas for a number of years, and have watched patients come in for various anti-aging treatments. I even underwent fillers myself three
years ago, but nothing interested me more than Silhouette Soft. The results Dr Liakas’s clients were achieving immediately after treatment inspired me to book myself an appointment, and I couldn’t be more delighted with the results!” Dr Liakas, explains more about the treatment: “Silhouette Soft is an innovative new treatment which is helping many people, like Jeanette, who are looking for a more discreet way to
counter the signs of ageing on their face. Here at Vie Aesthetics, it has quickly become one of the most popular treatments we offer. The treatment is known as the non-invasive face lift and is designed to redefine the face for those looking for restored volume and reduced wrinkles. It is nonsurgical, and produces an extremely natural-looking result leaving the face completely mobile.” Silhouette Soft uses pioneering suture thread technology developed

Assumpta, also a Mary Kay Representative. “I began my Mary Kay career as I wanted to earn extra money for my family. At the time, my husband (a medical doctor) was working in a hospital in Exeter while we lived in London so it was almost like I was a single parent (in the physical sense),” Elizabeth explains. Elizabeth first heard about the business while on an all-expense paid trip to Hawaii she had won for selling World Books. A Mary Kay Consultant was sitting beside her on the flight to Hawaii reading the Mary Kay consultants guide. Elizabeth was curious and asked her about it. When they returned to the UK, the lady gave Elizabeth a free facial and she fell in love with the products and immediately asked how she too could become a Mary Kay Consultant. Elizabeth began her Mary Kay Career in September 1994, and just a year later she debuted as a Sales Director. In March 1996 she became a Senior Sales Director, and was voted as the company’s third annual Miss Go Give,

Her highest cheque in one calendar month has been in excess of £16,000. In the year 2002 she was crowned the UK’s Top Director. Today The Eagle Area is a Diamond Circle National area and continues to grow; to date it has over 2,500 consultants. “Mary Kay has dramatically changed my life and the life of my family,” she says, “not to mention the numerous women I have been able to have a positive impact on.” Her daughter Assumpta also says that working for Mary Kay has been a life changing experience. “I have always loved helping people and Mary Kay allows me to do that on a daily basis, whether it be by making women

For many of us, glancing in the mirror to see an older, more tired version of ourselves than we hoped for is a reality. As we reach our middle years, pressures of life - work, children and gravity (to name but a few!) can take their toll on our once youthful faces. We all strive to remain young and healthy; we all want to look our best, and for those around us to believe we have achieved this naturally. absorbable cones. sagging tissues. The regenerative effect is gradual and natural: After insertion the reabsorbable cones on the thread anchor themselves into the tissues and stimulate the body to produce its own collagen. This action, which continues over time, helps increase the volume of saggy areas and restores shapeliness to the face gradually to achieve a natural looking result. The treatment takes approximately half an hour to perform, and as
Jeanette can testify, normal life can resume almost immediately after treatment. “Three years ago I had fillers on my face, which left me with bruises for days, but Silhouette Soft was nothing like that. The day after I had had my treatment, I was back tutoring. I had two very subtle spots on my face from where the threads had been inserted, which I was able to easily disguise with mineral makeup and my hair. No one knew I
had undergone any treatment, but they did comment on how well I looked! Silhouette Soft is definitely the best anti-aging treatment I have had, I won’t be trying any other anti-aging treatments in the future! Silhouette Soft is definitely the treatment for me!” For more details on Silhouette Soft at Vie Aesthetics, visit www.vie-aesthetics.com. Treatment from £400 per thread.

VICTORIA Carson has always had a passion for Hats and Headpieces and the bigger and bolder, the better, as you will sense from her designs. The Essex-based Milliner launched Victoria Charles Headpieces in July 2014 offering a small Ready to Wear Collection. Her clients are generally those looking for something different, hence her motto, ‘Dare to be Different.’ Each design is unique and original although it is possible that a similar piece can be created to match a particular outfit requirement. Alternatively, clients can opt for a bespoke service where a headpiece will be design with only them in mind. Again this can be matched to a dress colour, theme or table setting. So those already with a clear cut idea of what they will be wearing to Ascot, as Victoria is keen to state: “you name it I can match it and produce something spectacular.” “I absolutely love Ascot,” she adds, “it’s such a fun day out and a fabulous
excuse to get dressed up, so here’s a few of my hat and headpiece suggestions for race-goers.” For the adventurous Royal Ascot-goer I recommend the Patricia or Lucie, wearing these you will certainly stand out in the crowd. For those looking for something more subtle the Millie or Phoebe are an ideal piece. If a hat is preferred the Izzy would be my recommendation and looks stunning in black with swirls to compliment any outfit. And Victoria’s personal choice… If I weren’t so busy this year and was able to attend Ladies’ Day I would
be opting for either the Medusa Signature in statement black or the Maria in a stunning red. The Hyde Housing Group Making a lasting difference, Working with Local Authorities The Hyde Group is an award winning provider of homes and makes a significant contribution to meeting housing needs and improving people’s quality of life. Hyde is one of the largest housing associations working in England, owning or managing circa 50,000 homes with a focus on London, Kent and the South Coast of England. Hyde built high quality new homes for 4,413 people in 2014/15. Of these, 83% pay a subsidised price, with 3,643 people housed in a new Hyde affordable home. Hyde is acutely aware of the housing crisis in the UK. A continuing decline in levels of house building, combined with increased demand, particularly within London and the south east of England, has increased housing costs significantly and impacted on local economies. Members of our team will be at MIPIM 2015 promoting New Challenges; New Partnering Solutions our Local Authority Offer launched earlier this year.
CGI of proposed Hyde HA Development in Harrow, London
Hyde is committed to tackling the housing shortage and reducing some of these impacts by: • Developing 1,000 mixed tenure homes a year with a focus on increasing this further • Delivering quality management services across all tenures and uses • Maximising life chances for residents through Hyde Plus’ support service • Retaining a strong financial covenant and commitment to invest for the future
We believe that the answer to delivering more homes, particularly ones that are affordable or are available for low cost ownership, is to work collaboratively with local authorities. A partnership approach allows local authorities to match their assets with our experience of mixed tenure development and regeneration, to create housing and communities in the most cost-effective and sustainable way. True partnerships can be achieved in a number of ways: • A joint venture model with sharing of risk and reward • Sharing the build programme: Hyde develops and sells the commercial elements of a mixed tenure scheme and the local authority develops and retains some or all of the affordable/social homes, to deliver an ongoing revenue • Hyde acts as the development and/or sales agent for the local authority • Traditional regeneration projects • Stock transfer opportunities
We have the financial capacity, A1 Moody’s credit rating and the highest validation from the Homes and Communities Agency. Equally, our reputation for innovation and creativity in designing new solutions for delivering affordable homes means we are an ideal partner for local authorities. We are committed to communities and places for the long term, supporting our developments with high quality, coordinated management services. These core objectives as a registered provider distinguish us from other market housing developers. We are open to ideas, so let’s do more to work together, pooling resources, ideas and ambitions, to create homes for people that need them the most.
We look forward to working with you in the future. The school had already funded the refurbishment and extension of the library space. What Friends of Warley largely funded was the new computer and software plus hundreds of new books that either needed replacing, updating or to be purchased in support of the new curriculum that started in September. The library has now been fully catalogued which means the school has started training the children on how to use the Junior Librarian system in order that they can independently scan their books in and out. The children will also be able to choose new books via the computer either through searching on words, or for our younger readers, through pictures. The system is linked to each pupil so that they can keep a record of everything that they’ve read. It also helps you find similar books that the child may like, according to those that they have already read. The new computer and desk is installed and the library is stocked with lots of new books. We are going to get a few more hundred books and new chairs so we hope to have successful completion of the project by the end of summer term. So far this has cost in the region of £3,500 and obviously this is partly due to the fantastic support you have given the school so thank you once again.

@What_House
A day in the life of a London estate agent Michael Swait, director of Sandfords in Marylebone, tells us about his working day as a London estate agent.
I
absolutely love working in Marylebone and the best thing about my typical day is that I get to be a part of a village that has such a strong community. I have always walked to all my appointments, even when it’s raining, and this is a great way to get to know the local businesses and residents. The atmosphere of the area has meant that I have developed some good relationships, not only with clients but also the people who live and work in Marylebone. So, it’s Monday morning, and after a great weekend with my little girl, I am up and ready for the day ahead. After a mad dash to drop her at nursery, I head to the station to catch my train. I walk from here and pick up a coffee from Carluccio’s on the way, a much needed boost of caffeine after being up half the night with a teething toddler! There are no two days the same, and this is part of the reason I wanted to be an estate agent in the first place. Marylebone has become increasingly popular with international investors who are lured by its charm, central location and continental atmosphere, and working with people from all
over the world is rapidly becoming part of my daily routine. Dealing with potential buyers with such different cultural backgrounds and meeting their property needs is very interesting and rewarding. Back to my Monday morning, and our weekly management meeting, which takes place at our Regent’s Park office. We discuss each office’s figures, any new properties, give our individual updates on existing listings and transactions, and talk about any other business required. Once we have finished the meeting, my day as an estate agent truly begins. My first call as I step foot into the office is in fact from a buying agent I regularly deal with who is property hunting for one of his many high net worth clients. The brief is for a 2,500 sq ft mews house with a budget up to £7 million, Marylebone prime or possibly into Mayfair. I’ve a couple of options that I can show him and get onto my clients to make the viewing bookings. The rest of my morning is spent mostly on the phone catching up with clients and solicitors to check the stages of numerous sales transactions, before taking a few calls from other potential

buyers. One call in particular has come through from a doctor who has recently been employed at the Harley Street Clinic, and is looking for a family home nearby. There are some beautiful properties around Harley Street, Devonshire Place and Wimpole Street so I am sure there will be something that they will love in this area. My second call is from a wealthy overseas family in China who are looking to invest in property in Marylebone. They have a daughter who is about to start studying at Westminster University and they want to relocate here for the duration of her university course and then potentially rent it out afterwards for investment purposes. After playing catch up and booking in appointments for the rest of the week, I realise that I have a valuation at midday and need to get going. Off I set, on foot of course, to Portland Place where I am meeting a retired banker who now wishes to release his London flat’s significant value, after which he hopes to move out to the home counties for a bit of a slower pace. Those seeking an equestrian home will know how rare it is to find a property which provides the whole package – a beautiful home, excellent stable facilities, off-road hacking on the doorstep, set within reach of good schools, shopping facilities and rail links to London. Trulls Hatch Farm, located in the picturesque Wealden countryside around 6.6 miles from the popular spa town of Royal Tunbridge Wells, combines a charming detached five-bedroom house with paddocks, serviced stable facilities and direct access to a bridleway. Current owner Phillip Hall, three times South East Point to Point champion jockey, who rode his 100th point-to-point winner last year, says: “Back in its day Trulls Hatch was a bustling riding school and many in the local area fondly remember coming here as children for their lessons. It really
is an equestrian haven and has also provided the idyllic post racing environment for our horses, which have benefitted greatly from the calm, good hacking, and direct access onto the bridle path which has helped set them on the road to the next stage of their life beyond racing.” Tim Crundwell at BTF, adds: “This is a delightful family home which you could comfortably move straight into, with excellent equestrian facilities. The property is rural but not isolated and with regular rail services into central London available from stations at Tunbridge Wells, Crowborough and Wadhurst, the property is ideal for those combining a rural and town lifestyle.”

Moving house needn’t be a nightmare just make your move with Belvoir. Made in Essex speak to Belvoir Basildon’s new Franchisee and director Keeley Taylor
With 16 years of lettings industry experience, and five years working for Belvoir, 30-year old Keeley Taylor was the perfect candidate to take over as franchisee of the Belvoir Lettings Franchise in Basildon. She is now director of Belvoir Basildon which covers the territories of Basildon, Romford and Southend-on-Sea. Her loyalty to the Belvoir brand and love for all things lettings meant that she elected to take over the business when the franchise became available. “It really felt like the right step for me when I was offered the chance to become the Franchisee,” she explains, “having worked at the office in Basildon since 2006 (primarily when it was known as ‘Let it Be and then as part of Belvoir when it was bought out by them in 2010). The company initially started nine years ago and it was just the director and me at that time. We had no properties and strived to create and grow a client-base. Since then the business has grown tremendously.” Keeley’s contacts have held her in good stead. “I’ve worked at the office for so long so I have some great relationships with the existing
landlords and tenants and it’s fabulous to be able to build the business and guide it in a new direction.” Keeley is just one of many new franchise owners for Belvoir who have been a successful lettings agency with an award winning service for nearly two decades. Offices across the UK such as the one Keeley runs in Basildon, are individually owned by local people, which the company believe ensures the best combination of knowledge and marketing effectiveness, such as the franchisee’s familiarity with the local schools and facilities; knowing the better areas to live in and why some houses are more attractive to locals whilst others will attract newcomers to an area. “I always felt strongly supported by the staff and the management at Belvoir’s Central Office and have good relationships with them, so the decision to become a franchisee once the possibility arose was an easy one,” Keeley says. “I couldn’t wait to be part of a network. I would recommend anyone looking into a Lettings Franchisee role to contact Belvoir’s head office in Grantham, they’ve been fantastic.” Keeley adds: “I am very enthusiastc about growing Belvoir Basildon and its future.”

Keep in shape for summer
As our lives become increasingly busy, exercising and eating well, often end up at to the bottom of the “to-do” list. But fortunately working out and cooking healthy foods needn’t take up a huge amount of time.
P
ERSONAL trainer Laura Holland says you can easily use your own home for exercise, saving time on getting to and from the gym, and money spent on memberships. There are plenty of other ways you can save time for exercise too, such as combining moves, working different body parts one after the other instead of resting between moves and exercising for shorter times but more intensively. “There is a real trend at the moment towards high intensity work-outs, as they have been
shown to be more effective at enhancing fitness and reducing body fat,” says Laura, of VMN Fitness. “These type of workouts save time, making them perfect for people like busy mums or those stuck at a desk for most of the day. “And working different parts of the body one after the other means you use your rest time after completing an exercise to work another area, using your time more effectively,” she explains. But Laura warns against so-called miracle ten-minute workouts and says we should
be aiming for slightly longer sessions to see results. “You certainly don’t have to spend hours pounding away on the treadmill, but keep in mind that the latest guidelines say adults should be doing 2 hours and 30 minutes worth of moderate intensity aerobic activity such as cycling and brisk walking each week, plus muscle strengthening works an extra two times too.” Here is a timesaving workout Laura has designed for Made in Essex readers to do at home using common household items, plus some quick clean-eating meal ideas.

The workout:
Spend 5 to 7 minutes warming up with an on-thespot jog then stretches for the chest, arms and shoulders, sides, hamstrings, calves, and quads, holding each for around 8 seconds. Cool down at the end of the workout, with stretches for all of the major muscles of 15 to 20 seconds each. The regime should take a maxi-mum of 30 minutes or less for those doing the lower number of repetitions and sets.
Main workout:
Gradually build up. You can do this workout every other day, increasing the repetitions
and weights where necessary when you need more of a challenge. Always consult your doctor first if you are new to exercise and stop if you feel dizzy, faint, or experience pain. Wall press-ups x 5-20 Chair squats x 5-20 Step-ups x 10-20 per leg Repeat this set x 2-3 times Sofa tricep dips 5-20 Step-ups 10-20 per leg Lunges with shoulder press 5-20 per leg Plank using sofa. Holding up to one minute. Jumping Jacks x 10-30 Repeat this set x 2-3 times
The moves explained:
Wall press-ups: Stand facing a wall about a foot away, and place hands on the wall level with your shoulders, slightly more than chest width-apart. Back your feet away an extra foot. Keep your body still, bend the arms, lowering the chest towards the wall. Do not arch the back. Push back up into starting position. Chair squats: Stand facing away from a sturdy chair with knees slightly bent. Holding your arms out for balance, strengthen your abs, lower your bottom towards the chair, keeping your weight back in your heels and ensuring
HAIR & BEAUTY It’s approaching the summer months of sun drenched days (optimistic?) and we want to be sure to have the best tresses Essex has, so after quizzing local Ongar based salon TIKADI, their manager Sharon Hennessey delivers her top 5 tips to perfect summer hair! 1. Be sure you’ve an appointment in your diary, think upkeep, keep your hair cut booked for every 6 to 8 weeks, for strong healthy hair! 2. Opt for a MoroccanOil luxury treatment, the Intensive Hydrating treatment will provide good overall results for all hair types. 3. For vibrant colours in the summer, you might notice a little fade, add a Schwarzkopf Colour Lock Express treatment, for just a few extra pounds, be sure your colour lasts longer! 4. We all know that hot climates are harsh on our hair, so you might opt for intense boosting treatments like Kerastraight. Always great for repairing, re-hydrating and the effects last for up to 30 days. 5. Wear a hat! The ultimate protection, keep your hair covered, but that doesn’t mean you can’t style your hair! A great blow dry is a super accessory. Tikadi is located on High Street, Ongar. For more information visit www.tikadi.co.uk

knees do not come over toes. Come close to touching the chair with your bottom then squeeze as you come back up to starting position. Use weights, water bottles or cans to make this harder. Step-ups: Using the stairs or a sturdy low bench, quickly step up with the right foot then left, then step back down with the right foot then left. Repeat 10-20 times then start set again leading with the other foot. This should be done fast enough to leave you out of breath! Sofa tricep dips: Sit on the edge of the sofa or coffee table, with your arms placed at your sides,
hands placed on the sofa with fingers facing forwards. Keeping a slight bend in the arms, bring your bottom off the sofa. Keeping your shoulders and elbows back, and bottom close to the sofa, bend the arms then press back up. Repeat. Lunges with shoulder press: Holding cans, water bottles or dumb-bell weights, stand facing forwards with arms at your sides. Now slowly bring your arms up so your elbows are bent and level with your shoulders, palms holding the weights facing forwards. Take a large step forwards with your right foot and bend the right knee, until your left knee is almost touching the floor. Make sure you come down with the move rather than forwards, ensuring your right
knee is not over your toe. At the same time bring your arms up to almost meet above your head, into a shoulder press position. Pulse up and down with the legs, while lowering the arms back until elbows are level with shoulders and pressing up again with each pulse. Pulse and lift 5-20 times before switching legs. Plank with sofa: A great move for the abs, back and shoulders. Kneeling in front of the sofa, clasp your hands and rest your elbows and forearms on the sofa. Now walk the feet back and drive the body up into a plank position on your toes, ensuring your bottom is in line with your back and hips are not too raised or lowered. Keep your gaze about a foot in front of you, to keep the neck lifted. Keep the abs strong and squeeze the bottom. Hold this position for up to one minute, and don’t forget to breathe. To make this harder, re-verse the plank by putting your feet on the sofa and your
elbows and arms on the floor, while maintaining that strong back line. Jumping Jacks: Classic aerobic move, starting with feet together and hands by your sides, to jumping out with both feet to the sides and raising the arms to meet above your head, then back again. Go fast enough to get out of breath. Other tips for fitting in exercise “Most people say they don’t have time for exercise, and in some cases this is true” says Laura. “So you need to make time for exercise, and stop making excuses, as there will always be one!” she says. “Try getting up earlier and squeezing in half an hour before work, use your lunch breaks to go for a run, or work out in front of the television instead of sitting in front of it,” she advises. “There are 24 hours in a day, so schedule a workout by putting
*Porridge with almond milk, ground flaxseeds, cinnamon and half a teaspoon of good quality honey. *Boiled egg with rye bread and raw vegetables, such as cherry tomatoes, peppers and avocado. *Fruit salad with plenty of berries, grapes and walnuts. *Omelette with green leafy vegetables, leek and good quality organic soy sauce. *Oat cakes topped with almond butter. *Steamed wild salmon in lemon, garlic and ginger served with roasted vegetables. *Vegan bean chili with red and yellow peppers served with it in your diary and sticking to it. Exercising should be a priority, up there with work, family time, and chores! If you don’t make time for it, it may never happen.” Do you workouts in the morning. Not only does this set
brown rice. *Sweet potato in its jacket served with plenty of rocket or salad and a little goat’s cheese. *Gluten-free pasta with a homemade sauce made of tomatoes, garlic, onion, and courgettes with chili and kidney beans, topped with fresh basil and pine nuts. *Stir-fry chicken or fish with vegetables and rice noodles in a green Thai-style sauce made with curry paste, coconut milk and coriander. *For personal training and healthy eating advice see Laura’s website vmnfitness. co.uk, email vmnfitness@ gmail.com or call 07740 38946 your metabolism up for the rest of the day, but you get it over and done with and don’t get sidetracked towards the end of the day. “You’re also less likely to eat unhealthily if you’ve already put the work in,” advises Laura.
Hair REVIEW - Rush Hair Brentwood
A
ward-winning salon Rush Hair has arrived in Brentwood, Essex, creating the latest on-trend styles offering only the best advice, treatments and services to their clients. They now have four branches in Essex: Romford, Lakeside, Loughton and Brentwood which opened on April 11. I wanted to see for myself just what this award winning salon had to offer after a friend visited the Loughton branch and raved about how good they are. Having been a former Toni & Guy devotee, it was rather ironic to see Rush Brentwood sitting shoulder-to-shoulder with them on the high street. Would this deter new customers I wondered? “We’ve actually had a few people in booking appointments who used to have their hair done religiously with Toni & Guy,” said one stylist. Rush Brentwood boasts a stylish monochrome look with shiny black tiled floor throughout and stark white walls.
Cabinets chocka with colourful hair products; Redken and Kerastase to name but a few are dotted around. There are sections to cater for nine customers and a staff of seven stylists and two juniors. The hair wash area known as the ‘spa’ offers something a little different from many other salons. It’s situated in a separate room which offers customers a bit of peace and quiet from the bustling main area. It also has the most
comfortable chairs and sinks that move to cup around your neck - rather than you having to crank your head back to have your hair washed. Whoever is doing your hair that day (in my case Charley, one of the Hair Directors) will wash it too rather than you being passed from one person to another.“ It actually helps when building a rapport with your client,” Charley explained. From cuts to their award-winning colour services and their newly launched speedy services menu and blowdry packages, Rush offers a wealth of options. I opted for a blowdry which is always a good choice and always leaves you feeling revived. Charley, worked her magic and within half an hour my rather uninspiring lacklustre ‘do’ was transformed into shiny, bouncy confidence boosting hair. ARIES March 21st - April 20th
You are being unrealistic. If you have a dream, don’t wait for it to come true. Take action. This may involve going back to school, acquiring some marketable skills or taking another job. For the short term future, you won’t have much free time. By staying focused on your goal, you’ll achieve the success you seek and move into a much better situation. It’s scary to make big changes, especially when you’re surrounded by cautious people. Thank your lucky stars you are so courageous.
Dwelling on problems can drive opportunity from your door. Cultivate a positive attitude. List all things you have to be thankful for at the start of every day. This will put you in a good mood, which in turn will attract money, love and exciting opportunities. You’re an extremely creative person who will benefit from an artistic outlet. Launch a project that has been tugging at your heart. Keep this work a secret in the early stages. Don’t let a cynic undermine your enthusiasm.
LIBRA September 24th - October 23rd
You are restless. It’s hard to focus on work when you feel inhibited or even imprisoned by an old routine. If you’re going to break out of this rut, you must make some changes. Plan a trip, begin a creative project or find new friends. Find some intellectual stimulation. A stuffy neighbour or relative may discourage you from striking in a new direction. Turn a deaf ear to their gloomy warnings. You’re a naturally joyful person who needs challenges to thrive. Branch out.
CAPRICORN December 22nd - January 20th
TAURUS April 21st - May 21st
LEO July 24th - August 23rd
Someone has been playing with your affections and you don’t appreciate it. Instead of getting drawn into this toxic dynamic, break free. Fill your time with activities that make you feel productive. Taking a second job would be a good idea. An extra paycheque will allow you to take a trip you’ve been dreaming about for years. If you want to cut costs, go with a tour group that gives you and your fellow travellers lots of independence. This is a great way to see the world on a budget.
SCORPIO October 24th - November 22nd
Sticking to a budget is strongly advised. Don’t cave into pressure from a romantic partner or attention seeking child who wants lots of expensive diversions. The greatest gift you can give to a loved one is quality time. Take this opportunity to plan some amusing outings with your nearest and dearest. A trip to the zoo, park or museum will be a great way to connect without breaking the bank. If you’re single, you might even cross paths with someone who is determined to win your heart.
AQUARIUS January 21st - February 19th
GEMINI May 22nd - June 21st
VIRGO August 24th - September 23rd
SAGITTARIUS November 23rd - December 21st PISCES February 20th - March 20th
Uncovering troubling information will force you to make changes. Don’t trust your finances with someone who has an uncertain record or a history of deception. You owe it to yourself to protect your interests, even if it means hurting someone’s feelings. Taking control of your finances will attract other moneymaking opportunities. An exciting job will become available. The competition will be stiff, but you can land this position. Hone your interviewing skills and update your CV. Domestic or family problems are affecting your career. It may be necessary to spend more time at home. Repairing a damaged relationship won’t be easy, but it will be worthwhile. You are at your best when you have a partner. Are you single? Make more of an effort to build a rewarding personal life. Pouring all your energy into work can be disastrous. Joining a gym or sports team will be a great way to meet interesting people while staying in shape.
CANCER June 22nd - July 23rd
Overanalysing your feelings is causing confusion. Instead of constantly questioning your emotions, trust them. If you have a compelling urge to get some distance from a partner, do so. Asserting your independence will help you think more clearly. You’ve been subverting your needs to someone else for a long time. This has caused you to lose touch with your needs. Don’t be surprised when an exciting career opportunity arrives. A big change is just what you need.

You have a hard time communicating your needs to your nearest and dearest. They think you’re being wildly optimistic. While it’s probably true you should take a more realistic approach to your dreams, it doesn’t hurt to have hope in your heart. If you feel you lack financial security, take steps to secure a steady income. Having a regular paycheque will make you less dependent on your loved ones. In addition, it will boost your confidence. Push yourself to achieve more.
Communication problems at work are undermining your productivity. Instead of writing off a colleague as being stupid or uncooperative, take a second look at their style of working. Some people fare better when given hands on training. Others prefer to work from detailed instructions. If you’re still at a loss, ask some direct questions. Find the best way to collaborate. This will require some trial and error, but your attempts will eventually pay off and everyone will benefit.
You won’t be able to buy someone’s affection, so don’t even try. Keep your money safe in the bank, where it belongs. Love will come to you when you least expect it. Concentrate on having fun. If you enjoy sports, meet with friends in the park to play a game. Do you love to read? Join a book club or online literary group. A desire to tinker with electronics could send you to a junk store. Do whatever you can to feed your intellect. Nothing attracts romance like contentment. You’re extremely popular at work, which threatens an authority figure. No matter how well you perform, your boss may criticise your contributions. Fortunately, you don’t have to stay in this dead end position. Launching a home based business is a distinct possibility. This will involve long hours and financial sacrifice, but you’re willing to take the plunge. Pay no attention to more cautious folk who think your efforts are doomed to fail. They lack your ingenuity.

Summer debut for Alhambra
S
EAT is continuing its product offensive with the new generation of its Alhambra. The versatile MPV is up to 15% more fuel efficient thanks to its new engines and even more dynamic thanks to increased power output. The Alhambra remains at the very forefront of its class with new comfort and assistance systems, as well as innovative connectivity and infotainment offerings and will arrive at dealerships this summer, with UK pre-ordering starting at the end of May. The line-up of petrol and diesel engines has been completely redeveloped. Each powertrain fulfils the stringent Euro 6 emissions standard.
W
The turbocharged directinjection units are also more fuel efficient. Powered by the 2.0 TDI 150PS, the New Alhambra’s fuel consumption is an impressive 57.6 mpg, with 130 grams of CO2 per km. In the UK, the 2.0 TDI engines will be offered with 150 PS and 184 PS (torque 380 Nm). A 1.4 TSI petrol engine delivering 150 PS also joins the fold. “The Alhambra stays at the very forefront with its further improved fuel consumption and emissions figures. With its new technologies, it provides the best possible combination of dynamic driving fun and excellent comfort.” says Dr. Matthias Rabe, SEAT
ITH the Toyota Land Cruiser regarded to be the ‘King of the Desert’ in the Middle East and Africa it was the obvious choice of 4x4 vehicle to do some Dune Bashing on a recent visit to Qatar. The Land Cruiser is a common vehicle in Qatar and possibly the exact opposite in the UK, but with petrol and diesel prices around 17p a litre in Qatar it easy to why this big V8 four-wheel-drive off-roader is so popular. With my daughter Anna, son-inlaw Fred and grandchildren Harry and Eva domiciled in the capital city Doha, a trip was arranged to the desert region of Qatar. An hour’s drive south-east from Doha is Khor Al Adaid, better known as the Inland Sea, which can only be reached after traversing the towering sand dunes that surround
Moniem Meshall
Executive Vice President for Research and Development. All engines can be combined with the DSG dual-clutch automatic transmission, which in its latest generation also boasts a fuel-saving coasting function. As soon as the driver lifts off the accelerator, the Alhambra runs with the engine decoupled. The new Alhambra comes with a new generation of SEAT Easy Connect infotainment systems. These include highresolution touchscreen displays and the very latest processors for much faster booting and rapid route calculation, offering a completely new level of connectivity too. CHRIS MANNING it and requires an experienced guide and 4WD vehicle to reach. Our guide/driver/pilot for the day was Doha born-and-bred Moniem Meshall, who makes regular trips to the area for spills and thrills in the sand dunes in his trusty Toyota Land Cruiser and knows the area like the back of his hand. With the tarmac road coming to an abrupt end, the first thing Moniem had to do is lower the tyre pressures to around 15 psi, essential for better grip on the sandy terrain, then we were off travelling at around 60mph across the flat sections of sand, with the dunes looming in the distance. Climbing up the first dune, thankfully at a slower speed than before, we traversed along the edge before Moniem chose his spot to flick the steering wheel to send the Land Cruiser slewing sideways down the slope in a controlled roller-coaster ride down the dune. This was repeated numerous times along different sections of the desert dunes and I was impressed with Moniem’s deft control, constantly changing steering input and when things started to get a little scary, slamming the automatic gearbox lever into a higher gear to bring the 4x4 back under control.
SEAT’s next generation Alhambra system is also standard equipment in the New Alhambra. In the event that the driver can no longer intervene following an accident, it initiates automatic braking to avoid a secondary collision. New to the line-up is the Blind-Spot Sensor, which warns of unseen vehicles when changing lane. Also new in the Alhambra is DCC (Dynamic
Chassis Control). The system regulates the damper valves in a matter of milliseconds to adapt the vehicle characteristics to the exact driving situation – whether it’s supreme comfort or a sportier drive. The new massage seats also deliver an exceptionally high level of long-distance comfort. New rear lights with LED technology display SEAT’s
distinctive light signature, which underscores its family connections, as do the new brand logo set into the modified front grille and the new wheel designs. The interior comes with new colours, the steering wheel design is taken from the SEAT Leon and some of the control elements have been redesigned. Keyless entry and start system is another ease of use feature.
Surfing the dunes
Kicking up a storm in the desert region of Qatar in a Toyota Land Cruiser
I asked Moniem to stop so I could get some pictures of the Land Cruiser in action. He dropped me at the bottom of a large dune and once he had driven off and I was immediately aware of total silence surrounding me, and a thought struck me: I hope they come back. Thankfully, I soon heard the rumble of the Land Cruiser’s V8 engine at the
top of the dune and merrily snapped away and thankfully captured some decent pictures. Next on the agenda was a short drive to Inland Sea and a family picnic plus a leisurely swim in the very salty but welcoming Inland Sea. All too soon it was time to head back to our starting point and judging by the amount of tyre tracks we saw on our
return, plus a number of 4x4 vehicles heading in the opposite direction this is a very popular pastime and one that I would highly recommend to add to your list of Essential Things to do in Qatar. Our visit was also planned to take in the Moto GP at the Losiel circuit and is another item to add to your bucket list of things to do in Qatar.

Golf GTE delivers a dual role
O
NE of the world most famous cars is now available as a hybrid. The Volkswagen Golf has been a firm favourite with buyers for more than 40 years and eager to move with the times the German manufacturers has just launched an electric hybrid model. The Golf GTE, with the ‘E’ as you might have guessed standing for Electric, and follows the familiar theme taken from the GTI for Injection and GTD for Diesel. Replacing the red on the GTI, the GTE has a blue theme running throughout the vehicle, including blue accents running across the radiator grille, VW badge and under the headlights. Inside too, the seats have a blue tartan pattern and blue stitching on steering wheel and gear lever gaiter. Motive power comes in two sources, with a 1.4-litre 150PS petrol engine complemented by a 8.8kWh 102PS electric motor which is integrated into the sixspeed automatic DSG gearbox. Combined power output of 204PS propels the GTE to a 0-60 time of 7.6 seconds, only 1.1 seconds slower than the GTI.
By
CHRIS MANNING There are five operating modes, selected by two buttons, GTE and E-mode situated on the lower centre console next to the gearlever. GTE sees the petrol and electric engines working together to produce maximum performance, while the E-mode uses electric power only, which has a claimed maximum of 31 miles. Further options include Hybrid Auto mode makes most efficient use of the battery power, assisted by the petrol engine when demand indicates and Battery Hold which saves the battery power at a pre-determined level for use later, say in emission free zones. Lastly Battery Charge uses the combustion engine to replinish the lithium-ion battery on the move. For stationary charging the times are 3.45 hrs from a standard 240v main supply and 2.15hrs from a custom wallbox, with the
charging plug neatly located under the VW badge in the grille. Its low CO2 of 39g/km make it car tax and London Congestion charge free and because of its electric motor has a combined mpg figure of 166 and theoretical total range of 580 from its 40 litre petrol tank. Top speed is 138mph and 81mph on purely electric power. Inside, the instrument binnacle behind the steering wheel has been altered to accommodate a power meter sitting alongside the speedometer and give indication of battery status and level of brake regeneration,

which can be activated by tapping the gearlever selector into the D/B setting. Driving the GTE for the first time, I selected E-mode which was displayed in the information panel between the power meter and speedometer and changes once in motion to show which power source is driving the wheels. A hefty dose of accelerator instantly awakens the petrol engine to make rapid progress when needed. I tapped the gearlever into D/B mode to activate the regeneration system and on the first steep hill lifted off the accelerator and felt it come into action. It will even shut down the petrol engine as further fuel-saving option on long downhill runs. A bug bear of a lot of electric powered cars is the intrusion of tyre noise. I have to say that the Golf GTE was commendably quiet compared to others I have driven. On the move I switched to GTE mode to make
full use of the combined petrol/electric power which does produce near to GTI performance. Returning to normal driving I selected battery charge mode to replenish the system and all throughout my button pressing frenzy the GTE accomplished them seamlessly. The Golf GTE is only available as a fivedoor hatchback with one specification and is comprehensively equipped to GTI levels. The central 5.8in touchscreen fulfils a number of function. In addition to radio and sat nav it can display an energy flow screen, e-manager which allows the driver to preset charging parameters as well as interior cooling and heating. These functions can be operated remotely by using Volkswagen’s new Car-Net smartphone app. Price for the Volkswagen GTE is £28,035 which includes the Government’s £5,000 Plug In Car Grant.
Unused E-Type goes under the hammer AN INCREDIBLY original 1973 Jaguar E-Type, hidden away for more than 25 years, is set to see the light of day once again when it goes under the hammer in Silverstone Auctions sale on Saturday, May 23. The one family owned Series III V12 manual roadster was purchased new by the current owner’s grandfather in August 1973. In April 1993 ownership passed onto the son of the first owner yet still remained unused. The car was given a full service in October 2006 and
once again placed into storage. It was passed onto the current owner when his father died in September 2014. The dust covered car will now receive a careful recomissioning at classic car specialists
Tolman Motorsports before heading to the auction with an estimate of between £75,000 and £90,000. Having been used so little the car has covered just over 7,700 miles from new and remains essentially as

Jubilant Brentwood gain promotion
B
RENTWOOD Town will compete in the Ryman Premier Division for the very first time after a comprehensive 5-0 victory over 10-man Thurrock in the Ryman North play-off final. After a tentative start by both sides, the first real opportunity fell to Brentwood in the 22nd minute. Rees cut in from the left and squared the ball to Sam Bantick, but the winger’s first time shot curled away from Rhys Madden’s goal. Former Brentwood striker Ross Wall fired wide in the 33rd minute as Thurrock looked to test Blues keeper Ollie Bowles, but Brentwood countered and Akrofi found his way through the defence, only to hit the side-netting. Thurrock’s Lewis Clark went into the book on 38 minutes for a foul on Akrofi, and from the resulting free-kick Bantick curled the ball in towards the top corner, however Madden was on hand to keep it out. In the final five minutes Spence missed a glorious opportunity for Thurrock when he spooned the ball over the bar from eight yards. Moments later the ball was fed through to Steven Carvell in the box, but Jack Gardner made an excellent last ditch tackle to deny the striker and keep the teams level at the break. If the first half lacked entertainment, the second half certainly didn’t as Brentwood opened the

scoring within five minutes of the kick-off. Bantick provided the assist with a lofted pass through for Akrofi who had acres of space to run into, and the striker made no mistake with the shot, blasting the ball high past a helpless Madden. Thurrock had chances to respond with a series of free-kick’s, none of which caused the Blues any danger and they were left to rue their wastefulness when Bantick produced an almost identical pass to Akrofi who slotted the ball home at the second attempt. Thurrock made an almost immediate response when Jordan Clark burst through on goal, knocking the ball past Bowles before going down, but the referee booked the striker for diving. Three minutes later Brentwood put the result beyond doubt when Waters made a last-man challenge on Akrofi inside the box, for which he received a straight red card. The 20-year old lined the ball up and confidently fired into the corner to complete his first senior hat-trick. Brentwood compiled Thurrock’s misery with a

Hammers stung by the Bees LAKESIDE Hammers suffered a second successive home defeat on Friday, May 1, when the Coventry Bees delivered a last heat 5-1 to take all the Elite League points with a 42-47 victory. In a close fought affair, the Hammers got off to the best possible start with Kim Nilsson scorching from the gate, followed by guest Freddie Lindgren in for Andreas Jonsson. Jason Garrity took the chequered flag in heat 2, as the Bees reserves delivered a 2-4 over Adam Ellis and Marc Owen on his Hammers debut. Edward Kennett gated in the next race, chased by former Hammer Joonas Kylmakorpi, whilst Mikkel Bech kept GP Star Chris Harris at the back, until the Danish rider over ran on bend 4 of the last lap, allowing Harris through for a shared heat. Former Hammer Danny King delivered a stunning ride in the 4th, sweeping round the boards and on the outside of the home
straight to muscle past Lawson. Heat 5, with the Hammers two points to the good, saw a third shared heat, after Ellis and Garrity both fell on the first bend in the initial running. A two point lead became four to the Hammers in the next race, when Lawson gated, whilst Harris eventually got the better of Bech. After a shared heat 8, the Bees clawed themselves level. Guest reserve Darryl Ritchings was excluded for missing the two minute warning, allowing the impressive Jason Garrity to take his place and victory. Kennett produced a great ride in the next heat, hunting down and passing Anderson on the second lap. Nilsson and Lingdren then teamed up for a maximum heat advantage in heat 11, re-establishing a four point lead for the Hammers. Successive shared heats in the following three races, which included Marc
Owen’s first Elite League point in the heat 12, then saw disaster strike in heat 14. With Bech falling on bend 2 in the initial running, stand in Skipper Richard Lawson then suffered a blown engine whilst leading on the third lap. As he ground to a halt, the Bees pairing of King and Kylmakorpi sped past to give the Bees a 0-5 heat win. With a point between them, the nominated heat saw further disaster, as both King and Harris got the better of Kennett exiting the second bend, to deliver a 1-5 and the final hammer blow. n The Hammers again went down on their travels with a 39-24 loss at Coventry on Monday, May 4. The meeting was abandoned due to rain after heat 10, the result stands. Next up for the Hammers are reigning Elite League Champions The Poole Pirates, at The Raceway, this coming Friday, May 8.
fourth goal virtually straight from the restart. Rees came in off the left and ran unchallenged towards the edge of the box before unleashing a pin-point effort which curled beyond a static Madden and inside the far post. Bowles was in fine form at the other end, ensuring Thurrock had nothing to cheer about
when he made a fine double save to deny Wall. Brentwood’s top scorer Stanley came off the bench to complete the Blues’ second half romp with a fifth goal five minutes from time, beating the offside trap to latch on to Bantick’s through ball before coolly slotting the under the keeper to equal Town’s best result of the season.

SNOOKER
BINGHAM CROWNED WORLD CHAMPION
B
ASILDON snooker star Stuart Bingham beat Shaun Murphy 18-15 in a gripping final at the Crucible to win his first World Championship. Bingham becomes the oldest snooker world champion since Welshman Ray Reardon won the title aged 45 in 1978.å He began the final session with a 14-11 lead against Shaun Murphy and won an epic 64-minute frame at 15-15 to close in on victory. The 38-year-old made a break of 65 to go 17-15 in front and clinched the title with a brilliant 88 and collected a winner’s cheque for £300,000 and will rise from 10th to second in the world rankings. “At one stage at 15-15 I thought I was going to do Shaun’s runners-up speech,” said Bingham. “It was a 64-minute frame to go 16-15 and that really calmed me down. “To beat Shaun in the final tops everything off. Twenty years as a professional with blood, sweat and tears on the road. So many family and friends have backed me. It is unbelievable.” The final pitted 2005 champion Murphy against outsider Bingham, who beat favourite Ronnie O’Sullivan as well as Judd Trump and former champion Graeme Dott in previous rounds. Bingham had previously only once been past the second round at the Crucible - reaching the quarter-finals in 2013.

Basildon & Pitsea 104 all out Chelmsford 3rd 283-8 (Chelmsford won by 179 runs)
U11 Colts champions again BRENTWOOD U11 Colts have been crowned indoor champions again with a win over Hutton. They won the toss and decided to bat, but due to some very good fielding from Hutton, were bowled out for 95 with 5 balls of the allotted 12 overs still remaining. Henry Deacon and Ollie Cohen got Brentwood off to an excellent start with 25 and 24 respectively but a few quick wickets slowed the progress with Jacob Knightbridge scoring 15 at the end, in an effort to push towards a defendable, but not massive, target. However, an excellent all round

bowling and fielding display, including taking a wicket first ball of the Hutton innings, meant that although Hutton were not bowled out they ended up 20 runs short. Jacob Knightbridge took two wickets and William Reed kept well and importantly let no byes through and Ethan Norris saved two certain fours in the penultimate over. Along with Freddie Wise supporting from the side, the whole squad including Aston Leaver, Sam Sandle and Daniel Gir, who unfortunately could not make the final, contributed fully to another successful U11 indoor season.
A HASTILY arranged friendly enabled a few players to get some rust out of their system. A couple of wickets fell early on but a partnership between Paul Keaney and Barry Clayden put Chelmsford firmly in charge. The fielders struggled to stop some hard hitting on a cold day and an uneven outfield made boundaries plentiful. Clayden (50) completed his half century and gave himself up whilst Keaney (103) went on to complete a century. Phil Arnold (54) did not stay around for too long, hitting his first ball for six and rapidly passing fifty before making way. Chris Drain (30) and Stephen Drain (21) also made useful contributions and Chelmsford closed at 283 for eight from 40 overs. Baig picked up two wickets for the home side, bowling a decent spell at the close of the innings. The home side came out in aggressive fashion and there was a flurry of boundaries. Abhyankar (21) and Murdoch (38) played some good shots and enjoyed some fortune until the introduction of Raisborough (3-9) saw them off. The rest of the innings was closed
off fairly quickly. Luke Wells (24) picked up his first wickets for Chelmsford and Harry Green (2-16) bowled well after his first over. There was also an excellent run out from Matt Davis.
Weakness punished Buckhurst Hill 282-6 Chelmsford 1st 161 all out (Buckhurst Hill won by 121 runs)
CHELMSFORD’S difficulties in raising a side on a Sunday were exposed at Buckhurst Hill. The home side made a decent start and scored fairly comfortably before Tom Halsey made the breakthrough in his first over. A few difficult chances that were spurned in the field were a cause for regret. Aaron Beard’s fielding was outstanding as usual and he took two good catches, both off Rob Hayto. Given that Chelmsford had a long tail and very young top order, the chase was a daunting prospect. A wicket in the second over made it even more unlikely. James Clifford (40) made runs at a rapid rate supported by Vit Sapaetharan (33). The innings continued along similar lines with runs and wickets turning over quickly. The tail scraped the score past 150 and the innings closed inside 24 overs at 161.
and accurate shooting by Christie Simpson and Chantelle Hankin and Billericay won 48-38. Galaxy Thunder & Saffron Hawkes 1 competed for the Nicky Clarke trophy with Galaxy Thunder winning 49-40. Saffron Hawkes 3 & Brookshaw Blue competed for the Princes Plate, with Brookshaw victorious 58 – 51. Winners and runners-up of the 13 divisions and cup competitions will be presented with their awards at the league’s 50th Anniversary dinner and dance in June.
