Charity search is on C

HELMSFORD Star Co-operative is searching for potential candidates to be its new Charity of the Year for 2015/16. The Society is currently supporting J’s Hospice, based in Chelmsford, who offer care to young adults with life limiting

Issue 016

conditions and will decide on a new charity to support at its annual general meeting in April. Pauline Dodd, Chelmsford Star Co-operative Society President, said: “The board of directors are currently looking for local registered charities to put themselves forward as potential candidates. We compile a shortlist in early March and invite the Society’s 850 employees to vote on their preference.’’ The charity with the most votes will then work together with the Society on fund-raising ideas for the year, including collecting tins at over 150 till points in stores, as well as sponsored events and raffles. As the Society trades from 49 branches across the county, prospective

candidates should be able to demonstrate that their cause would be recognised by customers across all stores. Maz Keenan, community and events fundraiser for J’s Hospice, said: “We were delighted to be chosen as Charity of the Year 2014/2015, and have enjoyed working with the employees in their different fund raising efforts, which have ranged from a trek in the Grand Canyon, head shaving to book selling and raffles.’’ In 2013/2014 the Society raised more than ÂŁ36,000 for Essex Dementia Care and over the past seven years has raised in excess of ÂŁ210,000 for various Essex charities. Interested parties should email Pauline Dodd at coty@chelmsfordstar. coop or write to her at 220 Moulsham Street, Chelmsford, Essex. CM2 0LS by Friday, February 27. Top marks for county schools

Superfast broadband being rolled out

England, both with 100% of pupils having achieved five or more GCSE’s at A* to C. Some 82.5% of students achieved at least three academic A-Levels at A* to E grade - again above the national average (78.1%). Four Essex schools also appear in the top 25 in the country for average point score per A-level student including Colchester Royal Grammar, King Edward VI Grammar School in Chelmsford, Chelmsford County High School for Girls and Colchester County High School for Girls. Councillor Ray Gooding, Essex County Council’s cabinet member for education and lifelong learning said: “I would again like to congratulate all students and schools on last summer’s results. A lot of hard work has been put in by pupils and schools across the county and they should be proud of their achievements.”

RESIDENTS living in rural parishes in the north of Brentwood can expect superfast broadband this summer when a new service is launched in June. Those living in Doddinghurst, Blackmore, Hook End and Wyatts Green and Kelvedon Hatch parishes, will receive infrastructure upgrade work as part of Essex County Council’s £24.6 million Superfast Essex broadband programme, some of which is already underway. The scheme set to improve broadband connectivity across the county, looks set to increase superfast coverage from 68% of the borough up to 85% by 2016. Under BT’s commercial deployment the technology has been made available to more than 580,000 Essex homes and businesses including more than 22,500 on the Brentwood exchange.

At A-level (key stage 5) the average point score per student was 830.9 - above the national average of 776.6. The key stage four and five performance tables published this week, reveal that despite significant Government changes, the majority of pupils in Essex continue to make good progress in achieving the benchmark of five or more good GCSE’s. In English, 72.8% of pupils made the expected level of progress between key stage 2 and key stage 4 - above the national average of

71.6% and 65.5 % of pupils made the expected level of progress in maths - in line with the national average. Two Essex schools (Colchester

A nostalgic look back at Barking & Dagenham Author Sylvia Kent’s fascinating new book peels back the history of the area

B

ARKING & DAGENHAM, both large suburban areas of East London have been closely connected for a very long time. Historically, Barking was a fishing and agrarian settlement in the county of Essex and formed an ancient parish. What followed was a major shift in economic activity towards industrial development, and Barking eventually became part of Greater London. Barking was William the Conqueror’s home in the eleventh century, and is also home to Barking Abbey, an important centre of religion. For centuries, Barking’s fishing port was one of Britain’s most famous. Like Barking, Dagenham was also a farming village and remained mostly undeveloped until the London County Council began construction of a large estate, and a major population rise soon took place. When the Ford Motor Company opened in 1931, Dagenham was recognised throughout the world. Sylvia Kent’s nostalgic new book looks back at Barking and Dagenham, illustrated by old photographs and postcards that are sure to evoke memories of the borough’s past. “As someone brought up in Dagenham, I realised

that in four years, the Beacontree Estate will mark its centenery,” Sylvia explains. “It seems like only yesterday that both Barking and Dagenham were amalgamated to become a single London Borough the date was April 1 1965, so this year is their golden anniversary. I was given the opportunity to write a book,” says Sylvia, “and wander down memory lane, returning to the Borough, learning so much more of its history over my two years of research. “I was amazed at the enormous number of famous names in sport, industry, entertainment and the church who were connected to the region George Carey the Archbishop of Canterbury, Dame Vera Lynn, Dudley Moore and Max Bygraves to name but a few) and especially loved visiting St Margaret’s Church in Barking where I was married (as was Captain Cook in 1762).” Barking and Dagenham from Old Photographs, by Sylvia Kent. RADIO

An eclectic mix of music is the X Factor Tracy Morter is a true advocate for local radio, supports artists who have real musical talent and is our Phoenix FM radio presenter of the week

I

T’S surprising to discover but Phoenix FM presenter Tracy Morter had never worked in radio before starting on the Brentwood’s local station in October. The mum of three boys from South Woodham Ferrers, works as a wedding and music photographer and also led a campaign to stop the X Factor having a Christmas number 1 in 2009. Made in Essex finds out more... How did you come to have a show on Phoenix? “I got to know Chairman and founder Paul Golder online about a decade ago because I had just discovered one of my all time favourite bands, Maxïmo Park, and I found a gig review by Paul on his blog. I didn’t meet him in person until we bumped into each other in the photopit at the brilliant Brownstock Festival last year. Then he asked if I’d like to have a show.” Describe your show? “Eclectic! A bit of everything, something old, something new a complete mix of genres. I’ve played everything from The Carpenters, Napalm Death, War on Drugs, Nils Frahm to Fleetwood Mac, plus new up and coming artists and local talent like The Milk. I even played Carl Sagan talking about the Pale Blue Dot once! I especially enjoy playing artists I have photographed.” Tell us something interesting about you? My ex-husband and I started the Facebook campaign to make Rage Against The Machine the Christmas number 1 of 2009 beating X Factor

Tracy Morter

winner Joe McElderry. We did this for many reasons but one was the fact that as a music photographer I got to see how hard artists work, those that write and play their own music. It seemed unfair that the chart was now dominated by manufactured music advertised by

a prime time advertising campaign. I enjoy music sung by people who are emotionally attached to their songs. You can really hear a difference. Anyway, we won, Rage put on an amazing gig in Finsbury Park to thanks us and I had to go on stage in front of 70,000 people! We also raised 163K for Shelter and the donations are still coming in five years later.” Sum up local radio and its appeal? With the demise of TOTP, The Chart Show and MTV (which is now just reality tv) it is so much harder for new bands to get exposure on traditional media. The radio is a chance to expose people to songs they’ve never heard before or a reminder of songs they once loved and forgot. Local radio is brilliant for giving the DJ the freedom to make these musical choices and in particular for backing local talent too. You appear passionate about music? Music might seem like a frivolous thing to care about in trying times but it’s always there to change your mood, to provide a soundtrack to your life and to bring people together. As Nietzsche said “Without music, life would be a mistake.” Tune into Tracy’s music show Sonder every Tuesday evening at 10pm on Phoenix FM, 98.0.

HENFIELD Operatic Society is now into the final few weeks of rehearsals for Sister Act based on the 1992 film of the same name. The group go into the Queens Theatre, Hornchurch on Sunday February 22 to complete final preparations for their show which begins on Wednesday February 25th and runs until Saturday 28th. “It has been a rollercoaster rehearsal period” says Suzanne Gunn, Sister Act Nun and publicity officer for the society. “The musical numbers are fantastic and have very catchy tunes; I go to sleep singing them in my head and if I wake in the middle of the night I’m still singing them! The dance numbers have been relatively easy to learn but, for me, quite difficult to remember. However, we’ve now set the whole show and the more we run the numbers, the more they are sticking in my head; by show

week I’ll be perfect!” Members of Shenfield Operatic Society say that the group is like an extended family and indeed in the cast of Sister Act there are four sets of mothers and daughters, two sets of sisters/sister-in laws and a husband and wife with several other family members helping out behind the scenes as backstage crew. Sister Act has also inspired some extracurricular activity within the group. One of the cast members, Georgie Godbold, an award winning cake decorator and author, has produced a wonderful ‘Sugar Wobbly’© Nun called “Kerry”. O YOU know someone who you think should be recognised for their volunteering efforts? If yes, why not nominate them for Markel UK and the Small Charities Coalition, Britain’s Best Volunteer award for 2015. The award is designed to reward those who volunteer their time to help small, local charities, community groups and not-forprofit organisations. Nominations will be judged against a range of criteria, including: how long they have volunteered for; if they have overcome personal challenges; how their work has inspired others; the impact their work has had on their charity. Last year’s winner was Emma Hall, founder and volunteer at Stepping Stones Down’s Syndrome Support Group. Emma was one of 700 nominations put through to the final alongside four other remarkable volunteers by award judges before going on to win

the public vote. She co-founded the local support group Stepping Stones DS after her daughter was diagnosed with Down’s Syndrome. Seven years on the group now supports over 100 families with children of all ages based in Hampshire, Berkshire and Surrey. Nominations for this year’s award will remain open until February 20, 2015, at which time a judging panel will announce the finalists who will then face an online public vote to decide the winner. The winner of the award will receive £1,250 for the charity (or charities) of their choice and a personal prize of a holiday voucher worth £1,000. Runners up will receive £250 for a charity of their choice and a personal prize of a iPad mini. Spotlight on Fairtrade

DID you know that there are over 1.4 million farmers and workers spread across more than 70 countries in the world participating in Fairtrade? The Fairtrade mark has become the biggest and best known ethical label in the UK supporting farming and worker communities in the developing world with decent working conditions, local sustainability and fair terms of trade - helping to change lives for the better. Chelmsford Star Co-operative Society are holding a special evening on Wednesday February 25 at quadrant department store, 220 Moulsham Street Chelmsford, to celebrate Fairtrade Fortnight which is taking place from February 23 to March 8, offering an opportunity to turn the spotlight on the producers who grow the products we love. The evening which kicks off at 6.45pm until 9pm will include various highlights including a talk

by the Fairtrade Foundation and a mini fashion show by ethical brand Nomads (available in store). Ticket prices are £6pp and include Fairtrade curry and dessert. Available from quadrant Customer Services (on the 1st floor) or email events@chelmsfordstar.coop to reserve your place.

NOMADS are the latest arrival at quadrant. So who are Nomads? Well it’s the story of Duncan and Vicky who met while backpacking around India in the late 1980s. With only £200 left in their pockets, they used the money to fill up a trunk of wonderful clothes and then headed back to the UK. They soon returned to India with the profits they had made, mixing business with pleasure; staying at Buddhist retreats, discovering crafts at local markets and picking up gorgeous handmade fabrics along the way. Their shared love of India and its culture then inspired them to start up their own clothing company. Inspired by Indian craft, they worked with a designer to create styles perfect for the European market, finding a niche for bohemian fashion with an ethnic feel. They created clothing with the individual woman in mind, someone who sees life as a wonderful adventure. Someone who wants soft, colourful, feminine clothes that are comfortable and flattering. Nomads also

has a respect for people and nature, believing strongly in fair trade values and following ethical fashion guidelines. Nomads continue to travel to India several times a year to develop collections both in the Spring and Autumn. Working with a UK designer, using exclusive prints and unique styles, this ensures that Nomads collections are always fresh and original. This season the collection consists of

a stunning mix of beautiful colours, unique designs, feminine prints and delicate embroideries. This fully co-ordinated range has flattering outfits to mix, match and layer up throughout the season. Where they specialise, is in creating embellished details such as scatterings of sequins, embroidered peacocks, and appliqué butterflies to name just a few! Finally, watch out for their much sought after coat collection with its luxurious printed velvet and exquisite embroidery details. Financial advisor Cliff Fowler offers some top tips on how to invest any spare cash

W

E’VE all had daydreams that involve stacks of cash falling on to our laps – whether through a lucky Lotto win, or an eccentric relative leaving you their millions. But after picking your dream holiday, outrageous cars and perfect home – what should you really do when you’re fortunate enough to come in to a large amount of money? The term ‘use it or lose it’ springs to mind when considering the wise move of investing your money in an ISA. Up to £15,000 can be put into an ISA each tax year, though you do ‘lose’ that allowance once the tax year ends on April 5. Savers will be able to tuck away a further £240 as of April 6 this year, thanks to Chancellor of the Exchequer George Osborne, which can be invested in either cash or stocks and shares. You might be more familiar with the cash ISA available at your local bank, typically offering a meagre interest rate of around 1.5 per cent. However, for those willing to take marginally more risk, the rewards can be quite fruitful. Stocks and shares ISAs, though not as safe as their cash counterparts, can reap rewards far greater. Investing in dynamic funds such as the CF Woodford Equity Income fund, run by former Invesco Perpetual fund manager Neil Woodford, could have seen your money grow by a staggering 11.5 per cent since June last year. And for those of you wanting a further roll of the dice, there’s always premium bonds from NS&I.

Not a product for those looking for guaranteed returns, or a regular income, though one perk is that your money is very secure. The risk involved is on the interest you earn, as each £1 invested is entered into a prize draw in which you could win anything from £25 to £1million. Premium bonds require a minimum investment of £100, with a maximum £40,000, and all winnings are tax-free. Much like the lottery, this is a gamble and the odds are stacked against you – odds suggesting an investor with £1,000 is likely to accrue just £100 interest over a 10 year period. Whether the money you’ve got to invest is £10,000 or £1,000,000 – the decisions on how to look after it are tough. Cash ISAs require little more effort than a stroll in to your bank, but bonds and stocks and shares ISAs may call for the aid of an independent financial adviser. If you would like to be put in touch with a local financial adviser, contact Positive Solutions, Bakers Lane, Ingatestone. Twitter @ EssexIFA, or email at clifffowler@ thinkpositive.co.uk.

“Working with Uri was amazing,” Glyn immersed himself into photography. Instead of focusing on what he could no longer do, as soon as he got out of hospital and with the support of his wife Karin he booked himself onto as many photography courses as he could whilst still undergoing extensive physiotherapy and further operations. The photography helped him and his skills constantly improved. “I am still as excited about photography as when I was a young lad with my father,” Glyn explains, “although the technology has changed dramatically.” Friend and photographer Shiralee Swan lent Glyn her expensive DSLR camera to help him with his study and sent him on a few assignments teaching him some journalistic photography too. After years of studying photography, attending many seminars and workshops Glyn passed his City & Guilds in Photography with distinction and this then laid the foundations for his photography career. Experimenting with different genres of photography Glyn found his passions lay within lifestyle, travel, food and architectural photography and his relaxed and friendly approach works well at the workshops he now runs too. “It is wonderful when people who have attended my workshops with my friend Johnathan Wignall say they’ve learnt more in a day with us than in many years of self-study.” Glyn’s work has been published in magazines and newspapers, used for advertising campaigns and sold as pieces of art by various galleries. He has a growing list of clients ranging from individuals and small businesses to media and celebrities. He has photographed Dame Judi Dench, Virginia McKenna, Lorraine Chase, Samantha Fox, Michelle Collins, Vicky Michelle, The Happy Mondays, musician Macka B and more. Recently he has completed a photography campaign with celebrity to the celebrities Uri Geller. The mystic and spoon bender and will be holding an exhibition of these limited edition images in a gallery soon. “Working with Uri was amazing. I am very excited by this project and Uri is an incredible man. He opens his home up for terminally ill children, does a lot for charity. He is a pleasure to work with. And yes he did bend a spoon in front of our eyes. We were speechless!”. Just a couple of months ago Glyn was commissioned for a fashion shoot for Brentwood based Lucy Mecklenburgh

Uri Geller

of TOWIE fame and the images on her website now are all Glyn’s work. “A pleasure working with such a photogenic young lady,” he says. One of his favourite commissions though was a recent documentary style shoot of John Williams MBE Head Chef of The Ritz Hotel. “The shoot is for the ultra-exclusive Ritz Magazine. Shooting at The Ritz is a fantastic opportunity and to capture one of the worlds most respected chefs directing his kitchen staff was incredible. He was like a conductor in front of an orchestra.” “There are so many incredible photographers out there,” he adds, “some up and coming with dynamic new ideas and some established who have learnt their craft over many years. I love the work of Henri Cartier Bresson, David Hockney and Derek Ridgers. All incredibly inspirational and I may even be related to Derek – we have been talking and are trying to find out!” Glyn also likes creating magical images with his eight and a half yearold son Callum and hopes to be able to teach him about photography. “Photography is magical, it captures special memories for people, helps celebrities – and potential celebrities stand out, can make the difference in business to people and products and I am thankful to work with all of my clients and welcome working with new people too.” For more details on Glyn’s work visit: www.glynridgersphotography.com Email: glyn.ridgers@tiscali.co.uk 07970 891 939

Glyn’s five top tips for budding photographers. 1. The most important thing about being a photographer is education on what makes a good image such as composition, lighting, subject, focus, depth of field etc and how your equipment works and how you can use it to suit certain needs…a good way of learning this is by practicing as much as you can and by joining camera clubs and attending camera courses. 2. As camera equipment is very expensive it is often a good idea to try before you buy… You can hire camera bodies and lenses from various camera shops so before you invest your hard earned £’s into any equipment you should

always try to have a hands on experience with it first. 3. Website or Social Media….Every photographer should have a website to display their portfolio wether it is to potential clients or just friends…However only display the images you are pleased with if you think an image is ok then don’t show it… Images that make you go WOW! will often make others feel the same too... Remember your next client could be visiting your site soon. 4. Genre…Try and find a genre and style you enjoy and that comes naturally to you…it took me a while to find what kind of photographer I wanted to be. There are many genres such as Wedding Photographer, Travel Photographer, Sports Photographer,

Portrait Photographer, Photo Journalism, Reportage Photography, Wildlife Photographer, Landscape Photographer, Street Photographer and so on. As interesting as these all are it is very rare that you can be good at all of them and many of these require a certain camera and lens specification to achieve good results. So find out what it is you want to be and develop your own style within your chosen field. 5. Role models… Follow the work of someone you admire, up and coming talents or some of the greats. I love the work of many including David Hockney and of course David Bailey. Although these photographers have inspired me greatly I do try to avoid copying them and create my own twist on these styles.

OOKS are so important, as they allow us to enter new worlds, to escape for a moment from our own and also, as Dr Seuss said, to learn. With that in mind, Brentwood’s Chicken and Frog Bookshop have joined forces with Made in Essex to bring you a monthly Book Focus. Each month we will recommend titles which are new on the shelves or timeless classics, from brightly coloured board books to thought-provoking books for older readers. All of the books are available from Chicken and Frog – adults titles will need to be ordered in for you. If you mention Made in Essex when you order, we’ll give you a 10% discount! As Valentine’s Day is almost here, we have decided to go with the theme of love and friendship! Here are our book recommendations for February.

Their love for each other and for ‘mummy’ ensures that they have faith in her safe return. Don’t worry, there is a happy ending. This charming book is available as a board book, paper back and also a stunning pop-up. ‘The Imaginary’ is something rather special. From performance poet and children’s novelist A.F.Harrold, creatively illustrated by award-winning Emily Gravett. It is about love and friendship, but not what you may expect. and romantic fiction is all around. How wonderful for all book lovers everywhere. There’s such a wide choice out there, let’s have a look at some classics, as well as new books on the shelf.

Pride and Prejudice, Jane Austen. I am not convinced that Ms Austen would approve of the label ‘romance’ when it comes to this insightful satire of life in Regency England. However, we cannot ignore the passionate relationship that develops between Elizabeth and Mr Darcy. Elizabeth is everything that the modern woman would will her to be – feisty, courageous and honourable. And Mr Darcy, well, he’s arrogant, rude and immovable, until it comes to Elizabeth.

For the teen reader, ‘We Were Liars’ from American author E.Lockhart, is simply heart stopping. This is by no means an easy read, as the plot twists in unexpected directions, but it’s well worth sticking with. Cadence Sinclair

Clare, a beautiful, strong-minded art student, and Henry, an adventuresome librarian, have known each other since Clare was six and Henry was thirty-six, and were married when Clare was twenty-three and Henry thirty-one. Impossible but true, because Henry is one of the first people diagnosed with Chrono-Displacement Disorder: his genetic clock randomly resets and he finds himself misplaced in time, pulled to moments of emotional gravity from his life, past and future. Channel 4’s The Jump returned to our screens on Sunday coming from locations in and around Innsbruck in the Austrian Tirol. Sixteen famous faces including Essex’s very own Stacey Solomon and Joey Essex will be braving the icy winter conditions to compete in eight extreme sporting events including; Skeleton, Bobsleigh, Slalom, Snowboarding and Ski Cross.

JUMP L

AST year, formerTOWIE star Amy Childs bailed out of the ski jumping - so it will be interesting to see how this year’s contenders will fair. We caught up with Stacey and Joey and it seems they’re both game for a laugh. Singer and television personality, Stacey ‘Supersonic’ Solomon What was it that made you say yes to taking part in The Jump? Just the thought of going to an amazing ski resort, learning properly how to do all these activities, it just looked like loads of fun. Like a really fun holiday. Have you got any previous experience of winter sports? I have skied when I was younger I went with my family. But I’m no professional!

Steve-O (star of American TV series Jackass). I’m a risk taker but wow, he’s the biggest risk taker in the world. I’m not in it to win it, I’m in to enjoy the experience, be taught how to do all these different things and have a really good time.

Igls bobsleigh

Are there any events that you’re particularly looking forward to or dreading? I’m looking forward to all of them in a weird way. I’m looking forward to the adrenaline rush. I’m probably the most scared of the skeleton bobsleigh but at the same time, it’s an excited fear, if that makes sense, Are you competitive? I try really hard. For me, it’s not about beating everybody else. It’s about how I’d love to get better. I’d really love

...........................

to learn how to ski properly and be good at it. I’m more competitive with myself that I am with anybody else. How do you think you’ll feel when you’re faced with doing the jump for the first time? It’s funny, even training at the little slope, there’s these tiny, tiny - let me just reiterate - little lumps in the snow, and even just going over those, you feel yourself losing balance and it’s scary sometimes. I don’t know how I’m going to cope on a proper jump. Oh God!

Have you met any of the celebs taking part this year? I know Ashley (ex-Pussycat Doll, Ashley Roberts). We’re good friends, I’ve met Louise Thompson (Made in Chelsea Star) briefly, she seems like a nice girl. There are so many single women in this series, what’s going on?

Former TOWIE-star and television personality, Joey ‘Far From’ Essex What was it that made you want to take part in The Jump? The reason I said yes to it was because I’ve never been snowboarding or skiing. Some of my mates have done it and say it’s so good. You can’t go down a massive hill unless you go to Austria or somewhere. I’m looking forward to being taught all of these skills by professionals. I’ll be a pro by the end of it. I learn all things quite quickly, I like a bit of adrenaline and I like competition.

What events are you most looking forward to? Are there any that you’re really dreading? The Skeleton, I think will be good fun. I like things like that. Even as a little kid, on slides, I’d always try and go down face first. I was dreading the bobsleigh but then some told me there’s someone in front driving it so I’m not really worried about that at all. I’ll love that. I don’t think I’m dreading any of it, really. Are you competitive? Will you be going out to win it? I’d like to say yes and I am competitive, but I know who else is taking part. The

Is there anyone you particularly want to beat? I think I’m going to be quite competitive with Steve-O, I reckon I’ll really get on with him. He’s obviously a complete joker and he’ll be really up for it. I think it will be a bromance. What are you looking forward to about going to Austria? I want to see what it’s like being in a ski resort. It’s going to be an amazing experience. I’ve heard there’s loads to do, bars and restaurants and I’m surrounded by single girls. It shouldn’t be too bad, should it?

Austrian options Ski jumping requires nerves of steel and a certain mind over matter approach. ‘The Jump’ takes place in a village called Natters, just outside Innsbruck, which is not open to the public. However you can try this elsewhere in Tirol, in the Hohe Salve region of the Kitzbüheler Alps, where you receive expert training and full guidance before you launch yourself off the 15m jump into the air and attempt to fly as far as possible. The ski jumping centre in Wörgl has 5 ski-jumps, which meet the international FIS standard with 3 smaller ski-jumps (15, 30 and 40 metres) and 1 larger ones (60 metres). ‘Ski Jumping for everyone’ is available at a cost of £50 per person for 3 hours, to book email jedermann@flughunde.at or call (dialling from the UK):+43 664 34 20 663. GETTING THERE Base yourself in one of the villages of the Hohe Salve region, such as Hopfgarten and explore Austria’s largest interconnected ski area, the SkiWelt. Crystal Ski Holidays (www.crystalski.co.uk/020 3553 7752) offers seven nights half board at the 3* Gasthof Unterbräu in Hopfgarten from £565pp including return flights and transfers.

SKELETON AND BOBSLEIGH

One of the most thrilling disciplines to watch is the skeleton, when the contestants hurl themselves head-first down an ice track on what is effectively a glorified tea tray and reaching speeds of up to 60mph. With coaching from Britain’s Gold medal winning Winter Olympic athlete Amy Williams, let’s see if this year produces any shining stars like Pussycat Dolls, Kimberley Wyatt in the last series. The skeleton and bobsleigh events take place at the Olympic Bobsled, Luge & Skeleton Run in Igls, which was used during the Innsbruck Winter Olympics in 1964, 1976 and at the Youth Olympics in 2012. If you fancy having a go on the bobsleigh, prices start from only £30 per person in the guest bobsleigh, which holds 5 people, behind a professional pilot. The adrenaline rush couldn’t be greater as

you experience this thrilling winter sport on ice, sliding 800m and taking in 10 curves. If you want to ride the full track from start to finish and achieve speeds of up to 115 km/hr, making 14 curves and a difference in altitude of 125m then opt for the taxi bobsleigh. The bobsleigh seats two passengers in addition to two professional pilots and costs £95 per person. For more info and dates visit www.olympiaworld.at or email bobfahrt@olympiaworld.at. GETTING THERE Spend the week in Igls, close to the Tirolean capital Innsbruck. Crystal Ski Holidays (as before) offers seven nights half board at the 3* Hotel Bon Alpina in Igls from £509pp, including return flights and transfers.

SNOWBOARDING

The line up of events this series includes snowboarding for the first time and all the action will take place in the resort of Kühtai, located about 30 minutes from Innsbruck and as one of Austria’s highest resorts at 2020m, boasts a wonderful snowsure record from December through to May. Snowboarder Jenny Jones, who won bronze in Slopestyle at the 2014 Sochi games, will be putting the celebrities through their paces. You too can test your freestyle skills in the KPark Kühtai, set up to offer an easy, medium and proline with a selection of kickers, rails and boxes and Austria’s biggest superpipe at almost 7m high. GETTING THERE Inghams (www.inghams.co.uk/01483 79 11 14) offers a seven nights’ catered accommodation at the Chalet Hotel Elisabeth in Kühtai from £599pp, including return flights from Gatwick (as well as all major UK airports) to Innsbruck and resort transfers.

As we get ready to watch the famous line-up demonstrate their newly learned skills, TV viewers needn’t just be spectators because here are some of the locations in the Austrian Tirol where you can try slalom, ski jumping or ski cross for yourself this winter.

SKI RACING

The ski racing events on The Jump will take place in Kühtai but if you are looking to build on your ski racing techniques then there couldn’t be a better resort to

participate in a ski racing camp than in Sölden. The resort stages the first FIS Ski World Cup race of the winter at the end of October and is also the official training ground for the US ski team. If this inspires you to improve your racing techniques, then check out the Andre Arnold Ski Racing Camps in Sölden. The former World Cup ski racer Andre Arnold runs camps throughout the winter season on selected dates, including 5 days ski training on slalom and giant slalom, with full video analysis and the final ski race with award ceremony. GETTING THERE The Andre Arnold Ski Racing Camp offers five nights’ at the 3* Haus Martina, with prices from £670 per person B&B or from £770 half board. Flights are available with easyJet from Gatwick to Innsbruck from £115pp return. For more information visit www.racingcamp.at.

Last year the Ski Cross event was one of the most popular events that saw Sir Steve Redgrave and Marcus Brigstocke crash out in style and will once again take place again in the resort of Kühati. One of the most popular Tirolean resorts for this discipline is the Stubai Glacier, which sees more than 200 professional training groups train on the 1000m long ski cross course in autumn. The Ski Cross course at Eisjochferner features ten waves, jumps and eight banked corners. From late December the ski cross course is transformed into the Big Family Funslope for everyone to use for free with a valid ski pass. GETTING THERE Zenith Holidays (020 3137 7678/www. zenithholidays.co.uk) offers seven nights half board at the 4* Hotel Bergjuwel in Neustift, with prices from £477pp half board and resort transfers. Flights available with easyJet from Gatwick to Innsbruck from £115pp return. “THP Tip of the Week: A Grand Entrance!”” We all know about the importance of first impressions. Yet it is surprising how few people take a proactive approach to doing a small things that will really impress a buyer. Once the buyer realises that the property is well cared for, such as wellclipped hedges and verges, clean windows and tidy paths, they are far more likely to be receptive to the property overall if they find ways of visualising themselves living there. If the hallway is in any way uncared for, no matter how well appointed the rest of the home is, ‘shabby’ is what will be imprinted on the buyer’s mind. It helps to define the quality of your property.

Quality flooring that varies from the rest of the house such as ceramic, marble, granite, or creative linoleum tiling really works. Bare or painted floorboards can also look good, but can look cold and sometimes be noisy. Hall carpets will be the first to get dirty, but runners can look good and add a feeling of space (and be easily washable!). A hall mirror can have the effect of widening the space. Adding to this feeling of space, good lighting can also add great charm to a property. It is also the last thing the buyer sees - and a good lasting impression can be as important as a good first one, so when it comes to your entrance hall, it really must be tip-top!

Lenders accused of lacking common sense when it comes to ‘porting’ mortgages

B

anks and building societies have been accused of lacking common sense when borrowers approach them to move their mortgage to a new property (known as ‘porting’). Over recent months there have been reports of consumers being refused for a mortgage when they simply want to move their deal onto a new property without borrowing any additional funds. The financial regulator has been forced to step in to deal with rising complaints about the practice, which many believe is an attempt to preclude homeowners from keeping low rates.

LENDERS FAILING TO APPLY TRANSITIONAL RULES New mortgage rules which came into force in April made it tougher for borrowers to get a new mortgage. Lenders were required to implement

tougher affordability checks in order to ensure that consumers were able to afford loans both at the outset and in the future. At this time, the regulator put in place transitional arrangements in order that existing borrowers who didn’t meet the new tests were not disadvantaged. These rules allow lenders to approve changes to existing mortgages as long as the borrower does not want to borrow more or extend the term of the loan. However, evidence has emerged of widespread rejection by lenders in cases where borrowers want to move home and ‘port’ their loan. There have been reports of consumers having their mortgages declined even though they do not want to borrow any additional money or in cases where they want to downsize and move to a cheaper property. In cases where a lender declines a loan application borrowers may then have to pay a significant early

repayment charge – often thousands of pounds – and apply through an alternative provider. Keith Osborne, editor of Whathouse?, says: “Many brokers believe that lenders are taking advantage of tough new rules in order to decline mortgages and move borrowers off low interest rates and interest-only deals. It is clear that the rules are not being applied consistently.” The Financial Conduct Authority has made it clear that it expects lenders to apply these transitional rules. Linda Woodall, director of mortgage and consumer lending at the regulator, said they had seen many examples of lenders applying strict tests needlessly. “Some borrowers are looking to downsize and so substantially reduce their monthly payments and have been told that the new payments are not affordable,” she said. “This is not common sense.”

RISE IN AGERELATED MORTGAGE COMPLAINTS The Financial Ombudsman Service has reported a rise in complaints about lenders who apply the tough new criteria and cite age as a reason not to port a loan. Many borrowers with existing mortgages that are scheduled to end in their late 60s or 70s are finding they no longer qualify because lenders have cut their maximum lending age. “Many lenders have introduced some tighter criteria for older borrowers and this is sometimes given as a reason for not porting a mortgage,” a spokesman for the FOS said. “Of the cases we’ve seen, we’ve generally suggested to the lender that if age alone is the reason they’ve rejected the request – and the customer’s circumstances haven’t changed – it doesn’t seem very fair to refuse the option to port their mortgage.”

ith property auctions more popular than ever, helped by programmes such as Homes Under The Hammer, there has never been a better time to consider buying or selling at auction.

OUR ESSEX OFFICE IS NOW OPEN

Now celebrating 25 years, Clive Emson Auctioneers was founded in 1989 by our chairman Clive Emson to supply a high profile auctioneering facility to corporate and independent estate agents, private clients and statutory bodies. We believe our success is due to, and remains attributable to a firm commitment to quality and service distinguished by both our Investors in People and ISO accreditations. The concept of the Company is to provide a specialist land and property auctioneering service and, therefore, does not compete with the traditional estate agency, mortgage broking, insurance or any other aspect of the property world. All properties upon which we are instructed are offered for sale in the auction catalogue. The 20-25,000 full colour catalogues produced for each of our auctions are available either by post or through a network of over 700 estate agency outlets throughout the entire South of England. Our marketing is supported by more estate agency offices than any other auctioneers practice. In addition lot details, catalogue downloads, viewings and legal documentation are available through our website. During each marketing campaign the entire catalogue is also bound within “The Estates Gazette”, which has a further readership of 100-120,000. Clive Emson Auctioneers have just opened the doors to its Essex, North and East London office. Headed by Paul Bridgeman with the aim to cater for a growing demand for land & property auctions within the area. We also have further offices in Kent, Sussex, Hampshire and the West Country making us the fourth largest property auctioneers in the country and the number one regional property auctioneers, both by volume and sales. One of the many things that we enjoy about auctions is the ever changing property types we see. Over the years we have sold everything from nuclear bunkers, sea forts, toilets, Martello towers to radar stations, house boats and many more, each time achieving the best possible price as decided by the market on the day. It is, however, important not to pigeonhole auctions as solely a method of selling unusual or problematic property, far from it. While these do sell remarkably well, it is important to stress that the large majority of business comes from selling more standard lots.

Paul Bridgeman FNAVA President (right) & Martin Hardy MNAEA, ANAVA (left).

The environment and transparency along with our expertise in appraising a huge variety of different land and property types is a few of the many reasons why people are turning to auctions. Other reasons include the speed in which a sale can take place and the assurance that the fall of the gavel is exchange of contracts.

AMANTHA Faiers’s career is going from strength to strength. ‘La Bella’ her fragrance launch went straight to the top of The Fragrance Shop charts and got it’s seal of approval from the prestigious Pure Beauty Awards where it won ‘Female Fragrance of the Year’ beating stiff competition from Juicy Couture’s Viva La Juicy Gold Couture, One Direction’s ‘You and I’ and Cheryl FernandezVersini’s ‘Storm Flower’.

Lashes

luscious

Following the successful launch of ‘La Bella’, ‘Lashes By Samantha’ is the second product in the ‘By Samantha’ beauty range. “I’ve always wanted to do lashes,” Sam explains. “After the success of my perfume, now I’m in the beauty industry I thought the next thing had to be lashes.” Sam has worn lashes since she was 16 as she suffers from trichotillomania (a condition where a person feels compelled to pull their hair or eyelashes out). “So this was the perfect step forward for me,” she adds. “I have created lashes that I will wear for any occasion and I’ve been involved in every aspect – from the packaging to the different lash looks itself. Lashes are such an important part of my life so I wanted my collection to be perfect.”

The three styles in the initial Lashes By Samantha collection comprise: ‘Oh! So Natural’ - a chic addition to daytime makeup. Samantha wanted to create a natural look to exaggerate and amplify natural lashes that can be worn through the day into the night for a subtlety glamorous makeup look. The second - ‘If Looks Could Kill’ is perfect to create more volume for an elegant seductive look. Samantha designed a thicker lash to draw more attention to the eyes – so suitable for that dramatic makeup look. ‘Glam it Up’ is for the super glamorous woman who wants to make a statement. Thick, layered lashes designed to really bring out the glam and perfect for a party look. “I wanted to create great looking lashes

that look and feel fabulous, flexible, comfortable, and have the added benefit of latex-free glue! These lashes are reusable and designed to be trim-able and will accentuate the eye with a tapered end. The perfect lash at an affordable price.” ‘Lashes By Samantha’ From £5. Winter therapy Bonnie Friend, Editor at spabreaks.com chooses her five favourite treatments offered by Lifehouse Spa Hotel in Thorpe-le-Soken, Essex to beat the winter blues.

Flower Therapy Flower Therapy dates back to the 16th century and uses the distilled dew from flowers in the belief that they have healing properties. It is a practice that thrives amongst Australian aborigines although most of us come across it in the form of Bach’s Rescue Remedy. There is a certain amount of ‘believing that it will

work’ required to really get the most out of it, but it’s great for headaches, depression and for its restorative powers. A bit of an all-rounder for this time of year! Reflexology While it can be used for an abundance of things, it is a little known fact that reflexology can work a total treat on a hangover. Reflexology helps to

stimulate the body and reduce the feeling of sickness and headaches. Salt Scrub A salt and oil scrub is a rather nice and decadent way to sweep away toxins, especially when it’s followed with a massage using a detox oil such as lavender, grapefruit,

cypress or juniper berry. It’s stimulating and invigorating. The scrub will also work wonders on that seemingly endless dry skin. Myotherapy Myotherapy is a form of deep pressure point muscle release. What makes it unique is that it utilises a simple yet

thorough kinesiology or muscle testing technique to locate abnormal muscle tension or trigger points in the body. The system was devised by Dr Waverley Chin; a chiropractor based in Hong Kong. The reason I particularly like it is because in addition to the normal working day, the winter sees me spending an inordinate amount of time sitting down which usually results in a very sore back that’s going to need more than your average massage to resolve, so this is definitely the way to go! Shiatsu Shiatsu has its roots in traditional Chinese medicine, which gives it thousands of years of knowledge to build on. The thing is that it’s a very personal treatment so the format is a little

Lifehouse Spa and Hotel different for everyone, depending on what you need. Basically it supports the body and boosts it, reactivating its healing ability so that you feel better and brighter. All treatments available from Lifehouse Hotel and Spa, Essex. To book visit www. spabreaks.com/venues/ lifehouse-spa-hotel.

a skilled and knowledgeable person and all self-taught. I have been really lucky to have worked for Albert Roux, who has been my mentor and friend for many years and is a true enigma to me.

fired by propane gas which needs to be delivered. I have already had a nightmare where I dreamt we had run out of gas during the middle of service! I pray it never happens!

What is your first food memory? My mother’s delicious steak and kidney pie on a Saturday afternoon

What is your favourite dish/ ingredient? Dawn Hughes, our chef at the Chop House in Dunmow, cooks me her Sesame chicken with a salad when she thinks I need building up. It’s brilliant.

Best cooking tip for a novice? Most of the pictures in cookery books are put together by food stylists using various tricks so don’t get disillusioned if yours doesn’t look the same!

IMON has spent time getting to know his local suppliers and prides himself on the provenance and quality of the food his restaurants serve. He is Roux trained and built his career in the fine dining and banqueting sector in London and Europe.

Who has influenced your cooking the most? My friend and mentor Albert Roux. Why did you become a chef? My eldest brother went to catering college and then landed a job at Buckingham Palace on the management side so when I left school it seemed like a good idea to follow in his footsteps. I fell in love with the buzz of a big commercial kitchen during my first practical and made up my mind there and then to become a chef and not a manager. Where did it all begin? Thanet technical college in Broadstairs and The Savoy, London Who are your favourite chefs? There are a few including one of my old bosses Raymond Blanc. I really enjoy watching him on TV as he is such

What is your favourite herb? Bay leaf. I was cooking at one of our restaurants recently and a customer walked by as I was cutting off leaves from one of our bushes outside. The lady asked what I was doing. I explained I was using the bay leaves for cooking. She was fascinated. She told me she had two bushes outside her house but didn’t realise you could use the leaves in cooking! What’s in your fridge at home? We have two. The first has lots of different bits and pieces in as I like to nibble when I get home late at night, so some charcuterie, cheese etc. The other… beer and wine! Your worst kitchen nightmare? We have just taken over the whole of the hospitality services at Chelmsford City Racecourse including two restaurants. The kitchen is

What is your biggest accomplishment? Being married to my long suffering wife and having two amazing sons, who I am very proud of. What’s your last meal on earth, if you had the chance to choose? I recently read in a book about the history of British food and in medieval times they had banquets that lasted for days. It would have to be one of these so I could spend as much time with my friends and family on planet earth. Why Fulton’s? I just love food and Fulton’s gives me the opportunity to use my Michelin Star skills but to create good honest food that people can eat every day without the Michelin Star price tag. *Fulton’s Restaurants: Writtle 01245 422432, Dunmow 01371 874321/ www.fultonsrestaurants.com

Kadjar unveiled BUOYED by the success of Captur, Renault is continuing its offensive in the world of crossovers with the launch of Kadjar, the brand’s C-segment crossover. This sibling to Captur is available with either two or four-wheel-drive transmission, the Kadjar delivers easy manoeuvrability in town thanks to its compact footprint at 4.45 metres long. It offers advanced connectivity with the R-Link 2 multimedia system, along with a relaxed experience behind the wheel, courtesy of the latest driving aids. The Renault Kadjar also benefits from a range of particularly efficient engines which position it at the forefront of the segment in terms of low fuel consumption and CO2 emissions. It will go on sale in the summer in Europe and is scheduled to appear in right-hand-drive form in the UK in the autumn.

The Renault Kadjar

Hybrid NSX makes its debut FRESH from its global debut in Detroit, the much-anticipated Honda NSX will make its European debut at the Geneva motor show, 25 years after the original was first premiered. The hybrid supercar has been specifically created to deliver a ‘new sports experience’, challenging conventional beliefs about the supercar segment. The Geneva show from March 5-15, will also see the global premiere of the British-built Honda Civic Type R production car. The ‘race car for the road‘ will be the most extreme Type R ever built, with blistering performance and that set new standards in the segment. A world-first application of Honda’s new 2.0 litre VTEC turbo engine and new chassis technologies combine to deliver one of the most rewarding driving experiences. Production models of Honda’s all-new HR-V and Jazz will make their debut ahead of their market launches later in 2015. Philip Crossman, managing director of Honda UK, commented: “With the fruits of a massive research and development investment now coming to the fore, 2015 is our year. “With these outstanding new products, along with our F1 partnership, it makes us a desirable proposition once more.”

WILLIAMS F1 ROLE FOR LYNN

W

ILLIAMS Formula One team has announced that Essex racing driver Alex Lynn will be joining the team as development driver for the 2015 Formula One World Championship season. In this role Alex, from Aythorpe Roding, will become fully immersed in the race team and gain a full understanding of its various functions. As development driver his primary role will be using the team’s simulation tools to help with the ongoing development of the Williams Mercedes FW37 and assisting the race engineers in setting up the car for each Grand Prix. Alex will also get behind the wheel of the FW37 for one day’s testing in Barcelona following this season’s Spanish Grand Prix in May. The 21-year-old began his single-seater career in Formula Renault UK, dominating the 2011

championship with a record 12 wins from 20 race starts. He was subsequently named British Club Driver of the Year at the 2011 Autosport Awards. Alex moved up to British F3 the following year and finished fourth before progressing to the prestigious FIA European F3 Championship in 2013 where he claimed third in the standings as the highest placed rookie. Alex ended the season with a dominant victory in the coveted Macau F3 Grand Prix. In 2014, Alex wrapped up the GP3 title with a record points margin, also becoming the first Englishman to claim this title. As well as his development driver duties for Williams Martini Racing team in 2015, Alex will also be competing in GP2 for the Championship winning DAMS racing team. Claire Williams, deputy team principal and commercial director of Williams, said: “Williams

RUGBY

has a strong track record in bringing young talent though the ranks and our development driver position is designed to fully immerse new recruits into the inner workings of a Formula One team. “As a British team we are always on the lookout for emerging home-grown talent and Alex has caught our eye with his impressive performances in GP3. “He has been chosen on merit and we are confident that alongside Felipe Massa, Valtteri Bottas and Susie Wolf, Alex will help play an important role in making sure that the FW37 shows continuous improvement over the course of the 2015 season.” Speaking about his appointment, Alex Lynn, said: “I am extremely excited to be joining Williams, a team with such incredible history. I hope that with a strong year in GP2, while also

Racing driver Alex Lynn helping to develop the F1 car throughout this season, I can follow in the footsteps of Valtteri Bottas who joined the Williams team in exactly the same development driver role. “Working with people like Sir Frank Williams and Pat Symonds is an incredible opportunity for me. There is so much experience here and I hope to be able to use the knowledge gained from these people to further develop my skills.”

Brentwood pack in dominant form

Brentwood out in the cold BRENTWOOD travelled the short journey to Thurrock on Saturday buoyed by a confident performance against Old Priorians last time out. Steve Killington was able to welcome Joel BevansRoyston and Matt Northall up front to take on Thurrock. On a bitterly cold day with wind driven sleet Brentwood opened up in lively fashion with half backs Harris and Simpson linking well to create space for Thomas and Cowen. Early pressure was rewarded with a penalty to Brentwood which James Cowen slotted over to give Brentwood a 0-3 lead. This lead was further extended by Cowen on 15 minutes with another penalty to give Brentwood a six point lead. Thurrock responded by launching an attack from the restart which saw them

gain a scrum on the Brentwood 22 metre line, the Thurrock number eight picked up and released the lively Thurrock scrum half who fed Jake Bernard to stroll in to score under the posts which gave a simple conversion for Thurrock to take the score line to 7-6. Brentwood were stung into an immediate response and saw the referee award another penalty to them, which Cowen confidently struck over to regain the lead 7-9. Brentwood forwards were winning the battle up front and eventually quick ball at pace saw Ed Greenfield released to score a well worked try and extend the Brentwood lead to 7-14 at half time.

The second half saw Brentwood start well, controlling the ball and attacking the Thurrock half, however as the game progressed, Thurrock took control. A Thurrock penalty saw them reduce the lead to 9-14. Brentwood continued to make life difficult for Thurrock but some excellent kicking saw Thurrock pin Brentwood to their own line. Resolute defence by Brentwood prevented the Thurrock side from scoring, however, a very loose kick and chase presented them with an opportunity to create a try wide out, making it 17-14. This was a lead that Thurrock were able to hang onto until the final whistle despite a last minute penalty which Brentwood decided to run rather than opt for a kick at goal, which could have possibly drawn the match.

BRENTWOOD’S first team lost 5-0 to Ipswich and East Suffolk. They hosted the top of the league team on Saturday and found their opposition on top of their game. The match was almost postponed as a heavy snow storm during the warm up threatened to cover the pitch making it unplayable but both teams were keen to play and found the snow turned to rain once the match was underway. The away team took the lead through a penalty corner drag flick into the bottom corner. They extended their lead to two after 20 minutes. Brentwood’s Henry Woolaston came closest to scoring minutes later but the keeper was quickly off his line to clear the ball away from

Woolaston’s stick. Steve Naven had a shot cleared off the line at the start of second half and Brentwood began to get the feeling it wasn’t going to be their day. Ipswich demonstrated some excellent hockey and closed the game out with another penalty goal and two slick attacking goals on the break as Brentwood pushed forward in the final 10 minutes. n Meanwhile in other results for Brentwood Hockey Club teams, the men’s second eleven narrowly lost 2-1 to Wapping fourth eleven. The thirds were beaten 3-2 by Upminster thirds. The fourths lost 2 - 1 to Wapping sixths and the fifths lost 5-0 to Witham fourths. The ladies first eleven game was postponed due to snow.

Pitch perfect for Moulsham girls THE girls’ football teams at Moulsham High School in Brian Close, Chelmsford, have benefitted from the improved training facilities on the school’s new 3G artificial grass pitch, and are enjoying a rewarding season. Funded by the Football Foundation, the school’s new facility is proving a resounding success as students, the local community and hirers

enjoy the benefits of the 3G floodlit pitches and an opportunity to train all year round. The Year 7, 8 and 9 teams are unbeaten in the MESSSA league and the U13 team was crowned district champions for the second year running and the U15 team finished runners-up in their group. In the Essex Cup the U14s are through to the final and the U13s reached the quarter-

finals, while the U14 team is through to the final of the English Schools Cup competition. In the kinder+sport National Cup tournament the U13s won the first round and qualified to represent Colchester United in the area finals, where they won all their group games, beating Cambridge United in the semifinals and MK Dons in the final.

WIN PUTS LEOPARDS AT TOP OF THE TABLE

L

EOPARDS went top of National Basketball League Division One as they defeated Kent Crusaders 66-55 in front of a big crowd at Harlow Leisure last Saturday. The Big Cats overcame a slow start to improve their record to 10-2 at the midway stage of the league campaign. Will Ashby sunk four of his six three point attempts on the way to a game-high 16 points, adding five rebounds and two assists. Courtney Van Beest added 14 points and six boards, with Byron Richards (12) and Albert Margai (11) also finishing in double figures while Dave Ajumobi added nine points, five rebounds and three assists as Robert Youngblood’s side inflicted Kent’s second league defeat of the season. Adetola Akomolafe led the visitors with an impressive 14 point, 16 rebound double-double while former Leopard Josh Steel finished with 11 points, four boards and three assists. Leopards started poorly with Crusaders rushing into a 9-0 lead, and it took nearly four minutes before Ashby’s first triple of the night got them on the scoresheet. A 14-0 run wrapped around the first break put the home side in charge and they never trailed again in the first half as Van Beest’s basket sent them into the locker room with a 29-25 lead. Steel briefly put the visitors ahead midway through the third period but Ashby and Ajumobi hit treys in a 14-0 run as

Leopards’ answered in devastating style, and they led 48-40 at the final break. A three-point Steel play saw Leopards’ lead cut to five points at the start of the fourth period but that was as close as the visitors came, and five straight Ashby points took the advantage out to 13 with five minutes left as the Big Cats never looked back. n Leopards’ schedule doesn’t get any easier as they travel to fourth placed Reading Rockets on Saturday. The game sees last season’s top two in the Division One table meeting for the third time this season, with both previous games having resulted in thrilling wins for the Big Cats. Ashby sunk a long jump shot with 2.4 seconds on the clock to give Leopards a 73-72 road win in the National Trophy while in the league game at the Brentwood Centre, veteran guard Ronnie Baker was ice cool at the foul line to convert four free-throws down the stretch to seal a 69-65 victory. Rockets have an 9-3 record and are currently on an eight game winning streak in the league but suffered a surprise 7658 hammering by Manchester Magic in the National Cup final a fortnight ago.

FOOTBALL

Defeat at the hands of play-off rivals Sudbury BRENTWOOD crashed to a heavy Brentwood Town    1 defeat at the hands of play-off rivals AFC Sudbury 4 Sudbury on Saturday in what was a Ryman Division One North remarkably good game of football given the conditions. Brentwood’s line-up included striker Emmanuel Osei, who had a spell with the club three seasons ago, and has returned on a month’s loan from East Thurrock United. Blues started the first half brightly and nearly went ahead in the third minute when Robbie Rees beat two opponents on a run into the penalty area only to be denied by a save from Sudbury keeper Marcus Garnham. But it was the visitors who went ahead in the eighth minute when Kris Newby hit a superbly-executed shot with the outside of the foot that looped over Ollie Bowles in the Blues goal. It could have been 2-0 five minutes later but Sudbury debutant Craig Parker shot over the bar from six yards. Brentwood had a chance to equalise from the penalty spot in the 20th minute but Garnham made a fine save from Louis Baucutt. Sudbury’s Jordan Blackwell rounded Bowles to score in the 36th minute and Blackwell linked up with Terry Rymer who produced another excellent finish to make it 3-0 two minutes before half time. Blues were awarded another penalty in the 55th minute when Sam Bantick’s shot from a free kick was handled in the defensive wall by a Sudbury player. Sherwin Stanley, who had replaced Baucutt at half time, scored from the spot to reduce the arrears. Any hopes of a comeback were dashed when Rymer headed his second goal from Scott Kemp’s cross in the 64th minute. Bantick hit the post from a Rees cross 10 minutes from time but there was no way back for the Blues who conceded fourth spot in Ryman North to Sudbury. KEN HOBBS

ROMFORD’S EFFORT DESERVED MORE ROMFORD SOHAM TOWN RANGERS

Ryman League, North

1  2

ROMFORD enjoyed the majority of possession in the first half but their final ball let them down on more than one occasion. The visitors took the lead when Jack Barry was very harshly adjudged to have handled the ball whilst prostrate on the ground in the box, leaving Joey Abbs to score low to the keeper’s right. Aaron Omand kept the hosts in the game with two excellent saves on the half hour, before with Romford’s first effort on target when Eddie Hart shot low to equalise on 34 minutes after good work by Daniel Jones on the right wing. Romford were now well on top and Abs Seymour came close to giving Romford the lead but his shot was well saved by ex-Boro keeper Lamar Johnson. Nathan Cooper replaced the injured Samuel Kemp at the start of the second half as Romford continued to dominate proceedings, and on 51 minutes Tyler Hayes crossed the ball deep to the far post, but Loui Hazelwood headed just over the bar after doing well to reach it. Two minutes later and a great reverse ball by Eddie Hart sent Daniel Jones through but Johnson was quick off his line and blocked the shot. In the last minute of the game the visitors broke free and a cross was smashed home by Matt Simpson to leave Romford wondering when they will finally get some luck this season. GARY REDWIN

Will Ashby top-scored for the Leopards with 16 points

Cheek’s winning goal MICHAEL Cheek’s 22nd goal of the season was enough to end a run of two straight defeats against a Whitehawk side who began the day in fourth place. Cheek’s chipped effort from 40-yards put the Clarets back in front just before half-time after Jake Robinson cancelled out an early Joe Ward free-kick. The Clarets handed debuts to goalkeeper Tom Lovelock, signed from Sutton United, and Southend loanee Jack Bridge. Jaanai Gordon, who recently extended his loan move from West Ham United for one more month, should really have put the Clarets ahead in the fourth minute when he found himself free inside the area, only to head Joe Ward’s free-kick wide. The home faithful were given an extra boost on twelve minutes when Joe Ward fired the Clarets in front. Nick Arnold fouled Jack Bridge on the left-flank and, from around 35-yards out, Seb Brown was caught too far off his line as Joe Ward’s free-kick flew over him and into the net. It was short lived however, and the Clarets should have identified the aerial threat that Tom Cadmore possessed before the leveller when

he rose above all to head over. It was the same player who had a crucial hand in the equaliser when he nodded down Sam Deering’s corner, giving Jake Robinson the simplest of finishes from six yards. The match was certainly endto-end although there was little in the way of chances with neither goalkeeper finding themselves having to do that much. Mark Hughes then wasted a fine chance to further cement City’s lead when he nodded over Joe Ward’s free-kick from close-range early in the second half. The woodwork then prevented the Clarets from doubling their lead when Jack Bridge’s excellent footwork gave him some space to try his luck from outside the box, but his shot cannoned off the outside of the post. He had another chance to seal it late on after Whitehawk’s Jake Robinson curled a decent effort narrowly over, but the Clarets returned to winning ways as Whitehawk returned home pointless.
