Making a splash! Essex baby Asher wins Water Babies Face of the Month competition
L THURSDAY 21 MAY 2015
ISSUE 031
ITTLE swimmer Asher Adebo, aged 15 months from Dagenham, has been chosen from hundreds of entries to be the Face of Water Babies for the month of May. The competition, which was launched by the UK’s leading baby and toddler swim school in January, seeks to find a face for each month of the year. The winners are drawn from the magical underwater photographs of young swimmers who take part in UK-wide Water Babies swimming classes. The competition started because Water Babies wanted to celebrate the great photography that comes with being a Water Babies swimmer as well as giving some of their adorable swimmers the chance to have their time in the limelight. Every Water Babies swimmer has the opportunity to take part in an underwater photoshoot as part of their Water Babies journey. Paul Thompson, co-founder of Water Babies said. “We want to offer a huge congratulations to Asher for being our chosen face for May, he really did make a huge splash with our judges. We also want

to thank everyone who entered, we were blown away by the number of entries we are continuing to receive! “Although we had the difficult decision of choosing one winner from hundreds of entries, we can’t wait to start the search again for June. Who will be next?”
Dr.Winifred van Rensburg
Penny Taylor, Asher’s mother, who sent in the photo of her little swimmer, is thrilled and said: ‘‘We love going to Water Babies! It’s lovely to see Asher’s confidence in the water growing every week and we both have so much fun in every lesson!” Asher, who swims at classes in Dagenham, will have his picture as the cover photo on the Water Babies Facebook page. Water Babies teaches more than 42,000 babies every week across the UK, with all teachers firstly completing their swimming qualifications with the Amateur Swimming Association (ASA) before commencing an intensive Water Babies training course, developed in conjunction with the ASA. Locations for classes in Essex include centres in Chelmsford, Basildon, Southend, Romford, Loughton, Harlow and Grays, Billericay and Rayleigh. For more specific information for classes near you visit website waterbabies.co.uk To enter your little Water Baby into June’s Face of Water Babies competition, send your nomination’s name, age, where they swim and underwater photo to faceofwaterbabies@bwpgroup.com.

EAST OF ENGLAND CO-OP
Chicken challenge to help food safety
P
EOPLE in the East of England eat chicken an average of 116 times per year, a poll to mark Food Safety Week (May 18 to 24) has found. There’s just one problem – if mishandled or undercooked, eating chicken can lead to food poisoning, which makes an estimated 280,000 people ill every year. The results have been released by the FSA to mark Food Safety Week 2015, and the launch of the Chicken Challenge, to reduce campylobacter food poisoning by half by the end of 2015. The FSA is asking people to: n Bag and store raw chicken separately from other food, covered and chilled on the bottom shelf of the fridge n Don’t wash raw chicken: it splashes germs n Wash everything that’s come in contact with raw chicken properly in soap and hot water, from your hands to chopping boards and any utensils n Check it’s cooked properly, with no pink meat, steaming hot all the way through, and that the juices run clear.
The FSA is calling all chicken fans to take part in their Chicken’s Got Talent competition to find the biggest chicken fans in the UK. To take part, all you need to do is: 1. Create an image, video, song, joke (or anything else you like) to show the world why you love chicken and post your entry on Facebook, Twitter or Instagram using #ChickensGotTalent The winner will win the chance to spend five days perfecting their culinary skills at Leith’s School of Food and Wine in London, travel and accommodation included.
BRENTWOOD Borough Council is calling on residents to take on the Chicken Challenge. Head of Borough Health, Safety and Localism, Ashley Culverwell said: “Chicken is one of many people’s favourite
meats, so it’s important to know how to handle and cook it properly. “By following the Chicken Challenge steps we can protect ourselves and our families from this illness. The Chicken Challenge has

LATEST figures from YouGov show that despite 88% of adults in Essex stating that it’s important to buy locally sourced produce, only 31% have actually do. The research was commissioned by the East of England Co-op, which is launching Sourced Locally Fortnight, which runs from June 1 to 14. Local produce is already a fundamental element of East of England Co-op’s strategy. Since 2007 it has run an award winning Sourced Locally initiative that brings local produce direct from around 140 farmers, 25 of which are in Essex, with £34 million invested back into the regional economy. The research highlights that vegetables (72%) and eggs (33%) topped the list followed by meat (31%), fruit (26%) and bread (14%). When asked if it was important that Brits buy local produce, Essex was above the national average (79%) with 88% agreeing. “If we could encourage every Essex household to swap just one product they regularly buy for a local alternative it could plough an extra £829,000 into the Essex economy,’’ said Roger Grosvenor of East of England Co-op. NEWS LOVE CLACTON CAMPAIGN
Seaside resort’s starring role
T
HIS week a Love Clacton launch took place at Clacton Pavilion to screen a new television advert which will be part of a new television advertising campaign aimed at boosting the number of visitors to the coastal resort. Tendring District Council has commissioned the television advert, aimed at promoting the Essex town to those looking for a seaside break this summer. The Love Clacton campaign will see the advert running in the east and south east, together with an On Demand campaign in London. It will be the first time the town has appeared in television advertising for many years. Tendering District Council (TDC) has been working closely with Clacton Pier, Clacton Pavilion and Magic City and Park Resorts who have all provided significant funding for the project to secure the deal with ITV. Nigel Brown, TDC’s Communications Manager said that the campaign is a serious commitment and
a vote of confidence in Clacton. “The whole idea came from the private sector; the businesses approached the Council and we teamed up to make this happen,” he said. “Individual companies in the area have undertaken TV advertising over the years, but this is the first time since the town’s heyday that Clacton has been promoted this way.” Billy Peak from Clacton Pavilion and Magic City said that there has been significant investment in Clacton in recent years and it is paying off. “Both private companies and the Council have worked hard to up Clacton’s game and make it more attractive to families.” Mr Peak said the new beaches being created as part of the £36 million coast protection scheme, currently in its second phase and being completed by the end of the year, will be a huge boost. Billy Ball from Clacton Pier said his company is proud to be involved in the campaign. “We love Clacton and we want others to do so.”
Clacton has been a firm favourite for holidaymakers and daytrippers for decades

FOOD WASTE CAMPAIGN
Do your bit for the enviroment
T
HE Young Essex Assembly (YEA) is encouraging schools to do their bit for the enviroment by signing up to its Green Pledge Award scheme. The window for applications launched this week (May 18) and coincides with the launch of Essex County Council’s Shrewd About Food campaign, which aims to raise awareness of food waste issues and encourage residents to reduce, re-
use and recycle. Each month the average family throws away about £60 of good food. In addition, almost half of the county’s waste is not currently recycled and food waste makes up the largest proportion of this. The YEA’s Green Pledge Award scheme looks to tackle the issue in schools with at least one pledge needing to be food waste-related. Many of the county’s district,
n VOTE FOR GARDEN SANCTUARY Saint Francis Hospice is calling on the community to cast their vote and help secure £14,000 for a garden sanctuary to support bereaved children. The Aviva Community Fund finances more than 300 worthy causes across the UK but in order to get the necessary funds the public has to vote and the projects with the most votes have the best chance of winning. borough and city councils offer food waste collections for schools and pledges could be as simple as schools registering to have their food waste collected and recycled. Alternatively, they could apply for a free composting bin from Essex County Council and vow to start composting food waste. The award scheme is open to all Essex schools, including primary, secondary and special schools. The deadline for applications is Friday July 31, 2015 and successful applicants will receive a Green Pledge star (as pictured). Cllr Malcolm Buckley, Essex County Council’s deputy cabinet member for Waste and Recycling said: “We are working really hard to tackle issues around avoidable food waste, which unfortunately still makes up a significant amount of ‘black bag’ or ‘black bin’ (residual) household waste in Essex. To follow the campaign visit the council’s Facebook page at facebook.com/essexcountycouncil.

The J’s Hospice, based in Chelmsford but serving young adult patients across Essex, was fortunate enough to benefit from the support of the Chelmsford Star Co-operative Society over the past 12 months after being selected as their Charity of the Year, 2014/2015. Chelmsford Star Co-op have embraced the challenge of supporting The J’s with vigorous energy with staff taking part in challenges such as The Grand
Canyon Challenge, Pedal for The J’s and numerous head and beard shaves. Collection tins have been placed in each store across the county plus there have been several raffles throughout the year. The J’s Hospice ambassadors were privileged enough to attend two events at the Quadrant Store in Chelmsford raising £1,000 at each event respectively. The final amount raised was an amazing £38,000 which will make a real and tangible difference to the lives of the hospice’s young adult patients and live their lives to the full - however short.

Kim also offers a one on one session and this is very different to how the traditional coaches work as instead of on going support she gives you all of the tools in just 1 session that lasts around 3 hours. “There are so many things that I can now do and I owe it all to the Sue Stone Foundation - and what is even more exciting is that I can now share these tools so that even more people can change and improve their lives too.” Kim’s top tips for creating the life you want • Write down your goals and dreams and also visualise them. We have two sides to our brain: the left side is our logical side and it thinks in words and it is able to plan. It makes lists and also retrieves facts and figures. The right side is our creative side and it thinks in pictures and concepts. This is our intuitive side and it’s fabulous at putting pieces of information together. So by writing down what you want and visualising at the same time you have a much better chance of success. It will not happen over night, like anything, you need to work at it. • Some people find it hard to visualise, so this is where a vision board comes in. I have made many of these over the years to help me achieve what I wanted and I found they worked
for me. It may seem childish to make a vision board, but hey, never lose your inner child! Its fun and can help you to relax by getting creative. You just need a piece of card in what ever size feels right and research images that relate to your goals, images that make you feel good or find pictures in magazines. Cut them out and stick them to your card and display it somewhere in your home. Or buy a corkboard and pin images to that, start with small goals and work your way up. Put the vision board somewhere you will see it regularly. • Affirm to yourself on a daily basis of what you want in any area of your life. Start with a couple of affirmations to get used to. Say them in the present tense as if you have already achieved them. This reprogrammes your brain to a new way of thinking. So by repeating them it will set you on a path to change and give you a new self belief. Many world leaders use this technique.
• Accept 100% personal responsibility for the choices you make in your life and that you are responsible for the direction of your life. You cannot blame others for what you have chosen. It is wise to recognise that you should take an honest look at your attitude, your abilities and your positive points. It’s unfair to say life is unfair, that you was born unlucky or blame others for your past mistakes. We as adults, are solely responsible for ourselves. • We can train our brains into a different way of thinking. We can change from negative to positive. It takes determination and practice. Holding on to negative emotions or being with negative thinking people can hold us back in life. How much do you want change? We have to learn to give ourselves positive self talk and also treat others as we wish to be treated; you get back what you give out. If you live with a negative person, focus on what you like about them, focus on their good side,
and compliment them, show them how it’s done. • Working smart towards the kind of life you want takes time and determination. It is important to work on yourself. Become aware of the thoughts you are having, the statements you are making and the feelings you are feeling. Make sure they are positive, trust in yourself and your abilities. You are a fantastic unique human being and our brains are extremely powerful. We sometimes have to push ourselves out of our comfort zone to achieve the next level. Take baby steps at this and practice makes perfect. • Never give up at what you want to achieve, take training courses and even if it becomes a hobby at first the more positive you are, the happier your life will be. When you are clear about what you want, the path will become clear for you. If you want this to last, then never give up. Once you have changed and
you and others around you notice a difference, you will not want to go back. • Give out kindness and loving thoughts even to people who you don’t particularly like. They will soon notice. Be grateful for even the smallest things in life. Be grateful for the people in your life. Try not to take anything or anyone for granted. Our life is a gift and time goes by quickly. So live for today. To book your first lifetransforming session and for more details about Kim and her Positive Thinking Talks in Essex, visit her website: kimwymer.com or call 07913 895 285. Meat Free & Mar KARIN RIDGERS celebrates vegetarian food and highlights some great veggie establishments in Essex. And what better a time, than during National Vegetarian Week (May 18-24) when this year’s theme is all about sharing!
I
FEEL there is nothing better than sharing food. Breaking bread, sharing dips, passing around large bowls of salads, and colourful vegan friendly dishes, everyone laughing and enjoying the sunshine feels like a perfect summers afternoon, along with a few bottles of (vegan) red wine. Now Essex is getting there veggie wise. We now have our own vegetarian Pub – The Railway in Southend which serves the most incredible vegan friendly breakfast. Complete with the usual mushrooms, tomatoes, beans and hash browns they also add tasty vegan sausages, scrambled tofu, meat free black pudding and veggie ‘bacon’ from Japan. This is must visit treat for a lazy Sunday followed by a long walk along the seafront. Then there’s the super veggie bistro The Oaktree in Leigh on Sea is a wonderful place to sit outside and enjoy a soya latte and watch
the world go by. With special theme nights such as Japanese, Italian and Greek as well as BOGOF on a Wednesday - it has helped made Leigh on Sea a mini Brighton. Affinity 1777 again in Leigh on Sea, always have vegan options, dairy free butter and soya milk and make a stunning vegan afternoon tea with freshly baked bread and homemade scones and egg free cakes. And newly opened in Colchester is The Den at 23 run by husband and wife team Jennifer and Robert Dunn. They offer a super menu with their own take on a vegan egg and sausage muffin, Fairtrade tea and coffee, soya, almond and coconut milk – with dairy free squirty cream and gelatine free marshmallows for the hot chocolate too. And, not to mention the best egg free cupcakes ever. Harrys Bar in Billericay note on their menu what is suitable for vegans – we love their tapas.
And with vegan options at most of the high street chain restaurants like Las Iguanas, Carluccios, and Pizza Express, us non-meat eaters and meat reducers will never go hungry. Recent studies have shown that around 20% of the population are choosing to eat more meat-free meals. If you are thinking of going vegetarian or vegan and perhaps inspired by National Vegetarian Week, one of the main tips I’ll always give is to know your reason why. Are you going vegetarian because of animals suffering? To be healthier? More environmentally friendly? Whatever your reason, write it down on some brightly coloured sticky notes and pop one on your fridge, on your laptop, in your bag. If you ever feel like giving up or giving into temptation on your early days this will remind you of your ‘why’ and keep you on track. Explore the vegetarian sections

Author, TV presenter Rick Hay tells us about when he went vegetarian, “It was a humane choice combined with the need for stronger rights for animals. I also do not believe we need to eat meat to be healthy.” “Being vegetarian and vegan has become much more mainstream thank goodness and people are now more aware of the many health and ethical benefits.” Ricks favourite meal is, “Tofu and Cashew Nut Veggie Stir Fry, Salt and Chilli Tofu and anything I make in my Nutribullet Spinach, Banana, Berries and Nuts with some
TV Presenter and author Wendy Turner Webster read a leaflet from PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals) and this was the inspiration for her change to a vegan diet. “The penny dropped that the veal industry is related to the dairy industry and I also learned that a dairy cow’s lifespan is only around four years (as opposed to up to 20 years otherwise). I
realised that if I was being a vegetarian for moral reasons I had to be vegan instead! “Being vegan nowadays is easier than ever – there’s a dairy free substitute for most things, from yoghurt to cream cheese, and from ice cream to scrambled eggs. There are some products however that people would be surprised to know are vegan – such as Oreo biscuits, Jacobs Cream Crackers, Jammy Dodgers and Fry’s Chocolate Cream bars. Any notion that vegans are ‘missing out’ is misguided! “I do take longer shopping though as I am diligent in reading the ingredients lists on labels and health wise – as I have been vegan for over 20 years I can hardly remember not being. All I do know is that I am still breathing and am unlikely to fade away through lack of animal products in my life!” Wendy tell us of her
favourite vegan meal , “That’s easy – chips, peas, parsley sauce and a V-Bites Fish Steak… followed by Swedish Glace Vanilla Ice Cream topped with a dollop of crunch peanut butter and a drizzle of chocolate sauce!” You may have seen Tim Shieff on American Ninja Warrior or more recently this month on the UK version of the show. Tim is a professional free runner and is one of the most successful athletes in the world, Tim tells us, “I went straight to vegan because I saw the amount of suffering caused in all the animal agriculture industries especially the milk and egg industry and wanted to maximise my reduction of suffering caused by my choices once I’d learnt what was involved.” “I’ve noticed how much the world is in a trance (that I too was once in)
set by our addiction to eating meat which came from an important part of our survival in our history which once served us but is no longer necessary in a western world.” “I don’t have any favourite meal per say, on different days at different times I desire different foods and nutrition but one of my main go to’s is sweet potatoes and hummus.” Tim is also good friends with Jamie Oliver and you can see a clip on VeggieVision TV of Tim chatting to Jamie about vegetarian and vegan living. Noah Huntley the rather gorgeous British actor has
been in a ton of films and TV shows including Emmerdale, Holby City, 28 Days Later, Dracula Untold, Snow White and the Huntsmen and is now appearing in a hilarious looking programme on E! Entertainment with Elizabeth Hurley; The Royals. Despite the high flying, celebrity mingling and high profile modelling too Noah is a yoga loving fellow vegetarian. “I go between vegetarian and being a full on vegan and for around 15 years now. Mainly inspired by meditative practice and later through common sense and ethical considerations.” “I found myself becoming very limited as a carnivore. Going Veggie opened up my mind I am found myself using more ingredients more creatively too.” I like the fact that Albert Einstein is quoted saying, “The future of humanity lies in vegetarianism.”
vellous A must visit are the biggest veggie festivals in Europe Veg Fest UK. I have the pleasure of working closely with Tim Barford the award winning former rave organiser turned Veg Fest organiser. The shows include Bristol on May 2324, the London Veg Fest at Olympia in October and launching in December, the Scottish Veg Fest. There is also a successful Brighton Veg Festival too which takes place in March. P
ERSONAL trainer Peter Lemon shares his five top fitness hacks for getting back into shape: 1. Make every minute count. Two or three short sessions give similar health benefits to one long one. In our busy lives, finding thirty minutes to exercise every single day can seem like a daunting task. But if you can find just ten minutes at three different points in the day, you can get the same health benefits as those that workout in a thirty minute block. For example, you could wake up ten minutes earlier for some body-resistance training, speed-walk to the shops in your lunch break, then exercise bike your way through the ad-breaks of your favourite tv programmes to lose a few inches without setting aside a whole chunk of the day for exercise. 2. Use the internet to learn how to do body-resistance training for free in your own home. Gym membership can be expensive, and driving to the gym and getting changed can mean that a thirty minute workout takes an hour or more. Bodyweight exercises, such as
pushups, squats and lunges, use your own weight to strengthen your muscles. They are free and time-effective because you don’t need to leave your living room or buy any fancy equipment. You’ll also feel less self-conscious about exercising in the privacy of your own home, and you won’t be tempted to skip a workout when the weather is rubbish.
3. Spice up your workout with a new podcast, album or audio book. Spending ten minutes on an exercise bike isn’t everyone’s idea of a good time, but you can make the process painless by finding something that you like listening to while you pedal. Whether you’re into sports, music or the latest chick-lit, there’s bound to be a podcast, album or audio book out there that will help you to banish boredom. In fact, the evidence suggests that people run faster, cycle further and push harder when
they exercise to a soundtrack. 4. Those who are too tired to run should walk. We’ve all had those moments when we find ourselves genuinely too tired to get our usual workout. But rather than skipping your workout entirely, try to go for a brisk walk instead. Astonishingly, a moderate intensity walk conveys many of the same health benefits as conventional aerobic exercise, including a reduced risk of heart disease and stroke. What’s more, there’s a significant body of evidence to suggest that those who exercise frequently feel less tired and have more energy than those who stay on the sofa. 5. Exercise with a friend. If you’ve already agreed to meet a friend for a fitness class, you’re much less likely to find an excuse at the last minute. By sharing your fitness plans with someone else, you can stay motivated. Real life workout buddies are great, but don’t be afraid to join an online community if your immediate friends aren’t that interested in fitness. By writing down how much exercise you are getting and sharing the results, you create a positive feedback loop that helps you stay on target.

The super tomato!
G
REAT news then for lovers of the tasty red fruit - it’s British Tomato Week May 18-24. To celebrate deGoni Spanish Caterers in Ingatestone, have championed a few of their favourite recipes using tomatoes of course!
Bloody Mary de Goni style
No wonder tomatoes are so popular they are versatile, are healthy and delicious.
Catalan Flatbread: Ingredients
2 teaspoons dried yeast ½ caster sugar 2 teaspoons extra virgin olive oil ½ teaspoon fine sea salt 500g Plain flour 80ml olive oil 1 large brown onion thinly sliced 3 bay leaves 2 garlic cloves finely sliced 1 large red pepper (thinly sliced) 1 green pepper (thinly sliced) 1 tablespoon coarse polenta 250g courgette (thinly sliced) 300g cherry tomatoes 2 tablespoons chopped parsley Method: Put the yeast in a bowl and add 330ml lukewarm water stir until the yeast has dissolved. Add sugar olive oil and salt and whisk
together. Cover and leave in a warm place for 30 mins. Add the flour and stir to combine, knead for 10-15 minutes. Allow to rest for 5 minutes and then knead again for 5 minutes until the dough is elastic. Cover and place in a warm place for 30 minutes. Meanwhile heat a pan up with olive oil and add the onions and bay leaves and cook until golden, next add the garlic and peppers and cook for 20minutes then remove from the heat.
Preheat the oven to 220c, divide the dough into 6 equal portions and then roll out on a lightly floured surface into 12 inch tongue like shapes, sprinkle 2 well oiled baking trays with the polenta, place the dough tongues on top, cover with a damp cloth and leave to stand for 15 minutes. Toss the courgette in the olive oil and then brush the remaining olive oil onto the dough, sprinkle with sea salt and divide the onion and peppers equally over the top leaving ½ inch gap around the edge, then halve the cherry tomatoes and add these on top along with the courgette and some chopped parsley. Finish with a sprinkle of sea salt. Bake in the oven for 10 -12 minutes until the bases are golden and crisp.
Red White and Blue Cheese Salad Ingredients
Serves 4 225g (8oz) Rindless smoked streaky bacon 4 Little gem lettuces 450g (1lb) British cherry tomatoes 1 Bunch watercress 2 Avocados 1 Lemon, juice 225g (8oz) Blue cheese, cubed e.g. Blue Vinney, Oxford Blue, Stilton 2 x 15mlsp (2tbsp) Red wine vinegar 2 x 5mlsp (2tsp) Runny honey 1 x 5mlsp (1tsp) Dijon mustard 4 x 15mlsp (4tbsp) Olive oil Seasoning
Ingredients
• 2 parts Grey Goose vodka • 4 parts organic tomato juice or simply blitz in a blender six large tomatoes • ½ part fresh lime juice (to taste) • 4 dashes of Worcestershire sauce • 4 dashes of Tabasco (or hot pepper sauce) • Pinch of sea salt • Pinch of black pepper • Ice • Guindilla pepper • Olive and serve….
A few more recipes that may also take your fancy are from the British Tomato Growers’ Association (britishtomatoes.co.uk) who have produced a recipe booklet - ‘Simply Tomatoes’ to celebrate British Tomato Week. Method: Grill the bacon until crisp and then chop into small pieces. Separate and rinse the lettuce leaves, halve the cherry tomatoes, trim and rinse the watercress. Mix the lettuce leaves, tomatoes and watercress together. Peel and slice the avocados and coat with lemon juice to prevent browning. Combine the avocado slices and blue cheese with the salad. Whisk together the wine vinegar, honey and mustard. Add the olive oil steadily in a fine stream, whisking as you pour. Season the dressing to taste. Divide the salad between 4 serving plates or bowls and drizzle with the dressing. Scatter the crispy bacon over the top before serving.
Tomato and Fig Tart Ingredients Makes 12
Top tomato tip:
250g Ready made puff pastry 15mlsp (1tbsp) Dried mixed herbs 225g (8oz) British vine-ripened cocktail tomatoes 12 British cherry tomatoes 5 Fresh figs 140g (5oz) Goat’s cheese, crumbled 3 x 15mlsp (3tbsp) Red pesto sauce 2 x 15mlsp (2tbsp) Runny honey
One of our favourite ways to serve large ripe tomatoes is to slice them and sprinkle with a good pinch of sea salt, remove the bitter centre of a garlic clove and finely chop it, sprinkle over the tomatoes and then dress with extra virgin olive oil, put to the side and let all the ingredients soak in to the tomatoes, we always make a few hours in advance.
Method: Sprinkle the herbs over the pastry and then roll out thinly to a thickness of ½cm (¼”).
Patatas Bravas Ingredients
Maris piper potatoes Olive oil For the salsa: Olive oil Fresh chopped tomatoes or 400g can 1 carrot peeled and finely chopped 1 small onion peeled and chopped 2 teaspoons smoked paprika 1 red chilli chopped very small 2 cloves minced garlic ½ teaspoon sugar Tabasco sauce Red wine vinegar Method: Gently fry the onion and carrot in a splash of olive oil slowly on a low heat until translucent, add the minced garlic and chilli and add the smoked paprika. Cook for a minute or so.
Add the chopped tomatoes and season with sea salt and pepper and add the sugar. Cover and cook on a low heat for 30 minutes, stir every now and again to prevent sticking. Whilst the sauce is cooking peel and chop the potatoes into cubes, put a pan of salted boiling water and cook for 6 or 7 minutes until tender, drain. Heat the olive oil in a pan and fry the potatoes in the oil. Now check the sauce, we use tabasco to add more heat according to taste. Finish with a tiny drizzle of red wine vinegar. Serve the sauce over the top of the crispy potatoes. We like to add alioli as well.

Cut the pastry into 9cm (3½”) rounds. Arrange the pastry circles on a baking tray lined with non-stick baking paper and prick each circle at regular intervals with a fork. Chill the pastry for about 20 minutes. Meanwhile, preheat the oven to 220°C, 425°F, Gas Mark 8. Slice the cocktail tomatoes and figs and halve the cherry tomatoes. Spread a little pesto over each pastry circle. Arrange the sliced tomatoes and figs on top. Top each tart with two cherry tomato halves and crumbled goat’s cheese. Drizzle each tart with a little honey. Bake in the oven for 12-14 minutes. Cool on a wire rack for 5 minutes before serving. Tip This is an ideal recipe to serve for lunch with a crisp salad or as a starter to a meal.
Amazing tomato facts! • It is the green stem and leaves that give tomatoes their distinctive aroma, more than the fruits themselves. • A tomato a day? One of the most wellknown tomato eating benefit is its’ Lycopene content. Lycopene is a vital anti-oxidant that helps in the fight against cancerous cell formation as well as other kinds of health complications and diseases. • Fridges do flavours no favours, British tomatoes are fresh so they don’t need to be refrigerated, meaning you get that real homegrown essence.

Dream move
Moving house needn’t be a nightmare just make your move with Belvoir. Made in Essex speak to Belvoir Basildon’s new Franchisee and director Keeley Taylor
With 16 years of lettings industry experience, and five years working for Belvoir, 30-year old Keeley Taylor was the perfect candidate to take over as franchisee of the Belvoir Lettings Franchise in Basildon. She is now director of Belvoir Basildon which covers the territories of Basildon, Romford and Southend-on-Sea. Her loyalty to the Belvoir brand and love for all things lettings meant that she elected to take over the business when the franchise became available. “It really felt like the right step for me when I was offered the chance to become the Franchisee,” she explains, “having worked at the office in Basildon since 2006 (primarily when it was known as ‘Let it Be and then as part of Belvoir when it was bought out by them in 2010). The company initially started nine years ago and it was just the director and me at that time. We had no properties and strived to create and grow a client-base. Since then the business has grown tremendously.” Keeley’s contacts have held her in good stead. “I’ve worked at the office for so long so I have some great relationships with the existing
landlords and tenants and it’s fabulous to be able to build the business and guide it in a new direction.” Keeley is just one of many new franchise owners for Belvoir who have been a successful lettings agency with an award winning service for nearly two decades. Offices across the UK such as the one Keeley runs in Basildon, are individually owned by local people, which the company believe ensures the best combination of knowledge and marketing effectiveness, such as the franchisee’s familiarity with the local schools and facilities; knowing the better areas to live in and why some houses are more attractive to locals whilst others will attract newcomers to an area. “I always felt strongly supported by the staff and the management at Belvoir’s Central Office and have good relationships with them, so the decision to become a franchisee once the possibility arose was an easy one,” Keeley says. “I couldn’t wait to be part of a network. I would recommend anyone looking into a Lettings Franchisee role to contact Belvoir’s head office in Grantham, they’ve been fantastic.” Keeley adds: “I am very enthusiastc about growing Belvoir Basildon and its future.”
See what our customers and clients are saying about us!! We would highly recommend Belvoir as they have been exemplary in their service over the last five years we have been working with them. From Senior Management to the office support staff their attitude is always positive and they always provide a swift response and a caring approach to both us and our tenants. Over the last five years they have let and managed properties for us and managed a leasehold management company. We would highly recommend them to anyone who is considering renting their properties. Angela and Steve Belvoir Basildon - the office has been very supportive and accommodating to me, especially Keeley and Sophie. They have always kept me updated regarding the maintenance and the arrears and have always responded to my emails as quickly as possible and have always helped as much as they can’. Rna - Landlord I’ve used Belvoir for a number of years to manage my properties and appreciate the hard work the team put in to making my life stress free. I would never go back to managing my own properties again. Darren - Landlord Having known the team at Belvoir for some time I knew I could place my property in good hands. They also let my property in 3 days! Phil - Landlord Belvoir have let and managed a number of properties for me since 2007. Its great to deal with a Team who give a personal yet professional service. With minimal voids and an easy to understand accounting system I would recommend you guys to anyone, and have done. Keep up the good work. George - Landlord Keeley we would just like to say thank you to you and your team for looking after our portfolio of properties. The service you provide is comprehensive and means that we’re able to get on with our retirement secure in the knowledge that the properties are being properly managed on our behalf. Having dealt with you, and Sophie, personally for some time I was pleased to hear that you bad decided to take over the Basildon, Grays and Southend areas. I wish you well with this venture and look forward to continuing our valued relationship. We are happy to recommend your services to anyone thinking of changing agents or becoming a first time landlord. Parsley, sage, rosemary and thyme Growing herbs is a rewarding yet simple form of gardening that can be done equally well in pots or flower beds. Richenda Oldham explains how
H
ow many times in the past year have you forked out for a packet of overpriced wilting parsley or coriander in your local supermarket? The money you spent could have been far better used towards helping you cultivate your own supply of fresh, aromatic herbs, which look and smell wonderful and can’t be beaten on flavour. Herbs are just like other plants and come in annual varieties (such as basil, coriander and marjoram) and perennials (such as rosemary, lavender, sage and chives). They are simple to grow, too, regardless of whether you have only a windowsill at your disposal, containers on a patio or a formal herb garden. For extra convenience, grow them just outside your kitchen door, which will ensure that they are within convenient reach for when you are cooking – because there is nothing
more satisfying than using homegrown herbs to flavour your dishes. You can propagate herbs from seeds or cuttings or divide varieties such as marjoram, oregano, mint or thyme in late spring. They will do best growing in a hot, sunny spot and prefer well-drained soil – just make sure you feed them throughout the growing season. Alternatively, go to the garden centre and buy plants that are big/ strong enough to pick the leaves from straightaway. Bring them home and re-pot them, but don’t overwater them. Some plants (chives and mint) like moisture, while perennials such as rosemary and lavender prefer dry conditions. As a general rule, when harvesting herbs, don’t pick more than a third of a plant’s foliage – this will allow the plant to recover. Should you have a glut of herbs, remember you can freeze fresh herbs very successfully for all year-round use.
Parsley is an essential ingredient for all types of cookery and will thrive equally in sun or shade
Herbs can be easily grown in all kinds of containers, pots and planters, £3.99-£19.99, Dobbies Garden Centre, www.dobbies.com
Sage is a native Mediterranean evergreen plant with grayish leaves and blue to purplish flowers that have both medicinal and culinary uses
Rosemary is an evergreen shrub, so its leaves are available fresh all year round
The mild, garlic-like flavour of chives makes it a popular chef’s gardening choice
TYPES OF HERBS TO GROW Annual and biennial herbs: • Basil – regular sowings are needed for a summer-long supply. • Coriander – likes well-drained sunny soil. Use the leaves in Asian cooking and the seeds in curries.
• Parsley – this is an essential across all forms of cooking. • Dill – the fine leaves are used fresh or dried in Scandinavian cookery. • Sweet marjoram – use in Italian, Greek and Mexican cookery.
Perennial herbs: • Mint – delicious, fresh-scented leaves that can be used in teas, drinks and cooking. • Thyme – can thrive in stony, poor soil. Well-known for use in
French cuisine. • Sage – excellent accompaniment to pork and other meats. • Rosemary – particularly good with lamb, but the leaves can also be steeped in olive oil.
• Chives – use the leaves and flowers, all of which have a mild flavour. • Tarragon – really good with chicken, salad dressings, sauces and egg dishes.

Regeneration starts at Canada Water Work is under way to provide over 1,000 new homes in Southwark
D
emolition work has started on the existing Decathlon warehouse, a major site at Canada Water in Southwark, signalling the beginning of a significant regeneration of the area, including the provision of a new town centre. The scheme is a joint venture partnership between Notting Hill Housing (NHH) and Sellar Design + Developments, and it will deliver 1,030 new homes across the seven-acre site, ranging in size from studios to fourbedroom apartments and townhouses. The development will include a mix of tenures, addressing demand from property buyers and those who need affordable housing in the borough. There will be 453 private sale homes, 346 private rent homes, 162 affordable rent homes and 69 shared
ownership homes. Visiting the site to see the start of the work recently was councillor Mark Williams, cabinet member for regeneration, planning and transport at Southwark Council; Kate Davies, chief executive of NHH; and James Sellar, chief executive officer of Sellar Design + Development. Kate Davies remarked: “Demolition is never as exciting as putting up new buildings, but it’s a start. We are so looking forward to working with Southwark Council and Sellar to make this area a super new place to live, work and enjoy the waterside.” James Sellar added: “We are delighted that work is now underway on the regeneration of Canada Water town centre. Our vision is to create a vibrant new urban neighbourhood through thoughtful design, the introduction of green spaces, enhancement of the
water’s edge, independent retail, and events benefiting both residents and the wider community.” The site occupies a very convenient location, adjacent to Canada Water underground station and the Dock, between London Bridge and Canary Wharf. When completed, the new development will also include 150,000 sq ft of retail and commercial space, including a cinema, bars, restaurants, office space, plus a new a 100,000-sq-ft Decathlon store. Alongside these amenities, a community sports facility and health centre will complement new public areas featuring open spaces, landscaped gardens, walkways and cycle paths with a new waterside town square. 32 shared ownership
Find your new home at whathouse.com/new-homes
The simple guide to Lynda Clark of First Time Buyer magazine looks at how this part-buy/part-rent scheme could help first-timers to get a foot on the ladder WHAT IS SHARED OWNERSHIP? Shared ownership, also called part-buy/partrent, is a government-backed scheme that allows you to buy a share of a home, which you live in as if you owned the whole property outright. The benefit of this scheme is that the initial purchasing costs of a shared ownership property are generally lower than that of a property purchased on the open market, particularly when it comes to the deposit you will need. Shared ownership properties are available through housing associations, or registered providers as we call them. The registered provider that sells you your home will become your landlord, owning the part of the property you do not. With shared ownership you initially
AM I ELIGIBLE? AND WILL I HAVE PRIORITY FOR A SHARED OWNERSHIP PROPERTY? Each applicant is assessed individually but generally speaking you are eligible for shared ownership if: • Your household income is less then £60,000 per year or £71,000 a year or less in London for a one- or twobedroom home or £85,000 or less in London for a three-bedroom or more property. The minimum salary requirement is around £20,000. • You are a first-time buyer or you used to own a home but cannot afford to buy one now. • You rent a council or housing association property.
buy between a 25% and 75% share of a home. You buy your share with a mortgage and a deposit, just like you would if you were buying a home on the open market – only both are likely to be less than if you were buying the property outright. You then pay a subsidised rent to your landlord on the share that you have not yet bought. For example if you buy 25% of a property you will pay subsidised rent on 75%. As and when you can afford it you can buy more shares – read more about this in the ‘staircasing’ section later in this guide. As you purchase more shares your rent reduces and when you own 100% of your home you will not need to pay rent at all.
If demand is high and a shared ownership property is oversubscribed, the registered provider will look to prioritise applicants. If you currently rent a housing association or council property or you are serving military personnel you will have higher priority than other applicants. Depending on the area you are buying in there may also be other priority groups, ask the register provider selling the home you’re interested in for further details. In order to find out whether you are definitely eligible for shared ownership you need to contact your local Help to Buy agent. The Help to Buy agent will work through your personal circumstances with you, which will include your income, savings, need for housing, a basic check on your expenditure and any local connections you might have. This is a free service so it’s well worth contacting them.
• You have good credit history
HOW DO I FIND MY LOCAL HELP TO BUY AGENT?
In addition to the above, different properties will have different eligibility criteria so you should expect the minimum earnings for example to differ depending on the value of the property you are looking at. You may be able to buy a shared ownership property if you used to own a home, but can’t afford to buy one again now, often this situation arises when a relationship breaks down and the two involved cannot afford to buy another home on the open market on their own.
You can find out who your local Help to Buy agent is by logging onto www. helptobuy.org.uk and clicking on your area on the map. Your local Help to Buy agent will have information on all of the shared ownership properties available in your area. They’ll also pass your details on to registered providers that request information from them of people who are interested in purchasing shared ownership properties. Think of them as a matchmaker linking those searching for properties and those selling them.
• Generally you must live or work within the area you want to buy.
IS THE SUBSIDISED RENT I PAY INCREASED REGULARLY? It is important to find out at an early stage what rent you will need to pay on the initial share of the property you won’t own, and how much this will increase by on an annual basis. Housing associations calculate rents initially based on a percentage of the value of the share you don’t own, this percentage generally ranges between 2% and 3%. Every year the housing association will look at increasing the rent. Rents cannot be arbitrarily increased and are regulated, so don’t worry about extortionate rises. The calculation used for increasing rents is shown in your lease and will be linked to inflation. Make sure you have a good read of the lease before you buy.
YOU SAID EARLIER I WOULD HAVE TO PAY A SERVICE CHARGE? In nearly all cases you will need to pay a service charge. The service charge covers looking after and cleaning the communal areas, buildings insurance and often things like window cleaning and lift maintenance. It is important to check out what amount the service charge will be before committing to buying a home to ensure you can budget for it.

shared ownership SO WHAT EXACTLY DO I NEED TO BUDGET FOR? Before buying a property make sure you set two budgets, one for purchasing costs and one for ongoing costs. To cover purchasing costs you’ll need to allow for: • Mortgage valuation and possible arrangement fees • Legal fees – it is a good idea to use a specialist fixed-fee solicitor who is experienced in shared ownership • Deposit – this is usually 5-10%
of the value of the share you are purchasing. • To cover ongoing costs you’ll need to allow for: – Mortgage payments – Rent on the share you do not own – Service charge – Utility bills – Council tax – Contents insurance
The table below* gives you an example of how buying 50% of a property valued at £150,000 would initially cost you £7,250 and £630 per month as an ongoing cost:

WHAT IS ‘STAIRCASING’? IS IT BUYING MORE SHARES? One of the great things about shared ownership is that you can buy more shares at any time until you own the whole property, this is known as staircasing. A range of circumstances could lead to you staircasing: whether you have a partner move in with you, you inherit some money or you receive a good pay rise – all could allow you to purchase more shares in your home. When you’re ready to buy more shares you just need to contact to your
landlord who will guide you through the process. The cost of your new share will depend on how much your home is worth when you want to buy the share. If property prices in the area have gone up, you will pay more than you did for the initial shares you bought. But, if your home has dropped in value, your new share will be cheaper. Your landlord will arrange to have the property valued, although you will need to pay the valuer’s fee. Once the property has been valued, your landlord will contact you to confirm the costs involved. It’s worth talking to your mortgage lender at an early stage if
you’re considering staircasing to see what mortgage options are available to you.
WHAT ABOUT WHEN I’M READY TO SELL?? You are able to sell your home at any time but you must first inform your landlord. Your landlord will have a period of time in which to find a suitable buyer for your property. This is generally eight weeks. If in that time a buyer is not found you will be free to approach an estate agent and ask them to help you sell your home. If you have staircased and own
100% of your home, you can sell it yourself, although you must still notify your landlord first. Sometimes registered providers like to buy properties back, hence why you need to let them know you wish to sell. This will be highlighted in your lease.
I’VE HEARD PEOPLE TALK ABOUT ‘RESALES’, WHAT ARE THEY? ‘Resales’ is the term used by registered providers to describe properties that aren’t new, i.e. properties being sold as above. Generally you will need to buy
at least the minimum share that the current shared owner owns. Buying a resale is just like buying a new build shared ownership property in that you’ll need to pay monthly rent and service charges. Some people prefer to buy a property that has been previously lived in rather than one that’s brand new. You could ask the current owner questions such as what are their current running costs and what is the landlord like to give you a feel of what it’s like to live there. You’ll find that each Help to Buy agent lists resale properties as well as new ones so you’ll be able to see all of the options available to you.

flooring 55
Treading the boards Having problems choosing the right hard flooring for your home? Richenda Oldham’s guide will point you in the right direction
F
looring has been undergoing a recent shift in the fashion stakes, with hard surfaces emerging as an increasingly popular choice over carpet. There is a feeling that carpet is not as clean as wood or tiles. Stains soak in to carpet, dust settles permanently and bacteria get caught in the fibres. Hard flooring on the other hand has a sense of timelessness, plus it looks and feels clean. Spills can be easily wiped away and high-quality materials – with the right care – can last for generations, which means that your original investment pays off over time. More so than a carpet, which has a life of approximately five to ten years. Worn or scratched hardwood floors can also be revitalised by sanding, polishing, staining and finishing, so that they look almost good as new.
MAKING THE RIGHT CHOICE Before embarking on a purchase, first consider the purpose of the room. How much traffic will it receive from the people living in your home, not to mention pets and visitors? Rooms or areas with a high level of footfall will require tough hardwearing flooring, such as ceramic and stone tiles or hardwood. These are, however, the more expensive options, so alternatively you could opt for vinyl or laminate, which come in all kinds of finishes and different qualities, but which are less expensive.
HARDWOOD Wood flooring is one of the most enduring popular choices and it’s not hard to see why. It has a natural, elegant beauty that works well in any surrounding and comes in a wide choice of different species from oak, maple and walnut to imported varieties such as iroko, jatoba and kempas. Make sure though that the flooring you buy is harvested from sustainable, managed forests.
ENGINEERED WOOD Engineered wood features a top veneer of real wood, backed by layers of

plywood. It is easy to install and can be fitted over underfloor heating. More manufacturers are producing selflocking flooring that doesn’t require glue or nails. It is not recommended for high moisture content areas such as bathrooms.
BAMBOO This sustainable flooring is actually a grass and not a hardwood. Its ecofriendly status makes it an increasingly popular choice, particularly as it is tough and durable.
LAMINATE Laminate flooring has improved enormously and now comes in a huge range of styles and finishes. It features a top layer that is essentially a photograph, sealed with a plastic coating. This enables some excellent look-alike finishes to be created. Its attraction - apart from low cost - is most types come as floating floor systems, which means they can be installed over existing old flooring.

Marmoleum floor tiles are made from renewable resources and are an eco-friendly as well as hardwearing type of flooring; Click tiles in Barbados/Pineapple, £63.35 per m2, www.urbaneliving.co.uk
LINOLEUM Another environmentally friendly choice made from biodegradable materials and available in a wide choice of colours and designs.
CERAMIC TILE Ceramic tiles come as four basic types including glazed ceramic, quarry (unglazed), porcelain (very hard and durable), terracotta (unglazed with a rustic, earthy appearance).
STONE Beauty and luxury - at a price - but a worthwhile investment if you want to create a truly elegant home. Natural stone types include granite, marble, limestone, slate and travertine. Make sure they are sealed to resist moisture.
VINYL A less expensive option than the rest, but tough and almost maintenance free. This is a flexible type of flooring with a cushioned backing. Good vinyl can last up to 20 years.

Buying a listed property A ll of the talk in property circles at the moment seems to be about new homes – how many can we build, where can we build them and why haven’t we built enough in recent years? With estimates on housebuilding numbers
varying wildly, homes can almost seem disposable – so why not take a look at the properties that definitely aren’t going anywhere? There is currently in excess of 375,000 listed buildings in the UK – but is it really realistic to purchase one of your own?
EXPERT OPINION
while a more relaxed attitude may be adopted when it comes to other less important features or areas of the property.”
Here’s our beginners guide.
WHAT IS A LISTED BUILDING? Buildings are awarded listed status to mark their architectural or historical interest, and to give them protection against any alterations that may affect this interest. All buildings that retain their original structures built before 1700 have listed status, while most buildings constructed before 1840 do too. Listed buildings don’t have to be hundreds of years old, but the status is usually reserved for those at least 30 years old.
WHAT ARE THE GRADES? Grade II listed buildings are structures of ‘special interest’. Grade II* are ‘more than special interest’ and Grade I are ‘exceptional interest’. 92% of listed buildings in the UK are Grade II, 5% Grade II* and just 2.5% Grade I.
WHY ARE SOME PEOPLE RELUCTANT ABOUT PURCHASING LISTED HOMES? There is a misconception that listed buildings cannot be altered. Changes can be made in some circumstances,
Who can I advise me? but carrying out unauthorised alterations or extensions to a listed building is a criminal offence, and can lead to a huge bill to restore the building to its original state.
WHY IS THE CONSERVATION OFFICER IMPORTANT? The Conservation Officer will be an employee of the local council, whose job it is to ensure the character of a property remains intact. The Conservation Officer will have the power to grant or deny permission to make changes to your home, and may also dictate which materials you can use to make the changes. Listed Building Consent is comparable to planning permission, although no fees are involved.
IS THERE ANYTHING I NEED TO BE PARTICULARLY CAREFUL OF? Buyers should check carefully for any unauthorised work on their prospective property by previous owners, as once the home is purchased the buyer is responsible, regardless of when this work was carried out. Home insurance
can help you get past this issue, but can be significantly more expensive for listed buildings.
“Make an early appointment with a Listed Buildings Officer or Conservation Officer, who will give an indication of whether your proposed changes seem appropriate.”
WHAT SHOULD I DO BEFORE BUYING A LISTED HOME? Consult specialists on the relevant architectural period to get advice on what kind of changes might be allowed on your property. These groups include The Georgian Group, Victorian Society and Society for the Protection of Ancient Buildings. Ensure you are totally up to date with the current planning advice and guidelines, which can change over time. The English Heritage website should be your first port of call, and will also be your first point of contact should you experience a dispute with your local planning authority. Find out who your neighbours will be. Any decisions made on your proposed changes or renovations will take the wider community into consideration – so if you are surrounded by similar listed properties your scope could be limited considerably. Good neighbours can also be valuable allies should any planning disputes occur.
Grade I or Grade II James Greenwood of Stacks Property Search Should I buy a listed property? “Whether you decide to buy a listed property should depend on whether you love the house as it is, or whether you want to make significant changes. Remember, the curtilage, and all buildings within the curtilage, fall into the category, so any grand designs you have for the gardens and outbuildings need to be passed by the Listed Buildings Officer. “It is worth checking if there is any specific feature that underpins the status of the property, as this is likely to be completely nonnegotiable in terms of modifications,
“Grade I Listed properties and Grade II* Listed properties are a much more serious matter than Grade II Listed. The chances of getting permission to make changes to these properties are remote, so purchasers need to be sure that they love the property as it is. The kudos of owning one of these properties is also much greater.”
Can I make changes without listed building consent? “Making changes without Listed building consent would be making a big mistake. An enforcement notice is an expensive piece of paper, and even if you get away with internal changes at the time, they will become a big problem if you come to sell.” Find out more at www.stacks.co.uk; 01594 842880

Homeowners outnumber mortgage holders for first time since the 1980s The generational divide is also widening, with the majority of homeowners now 65 or over, says Nick Parkhouse
N
ew data has revealed that the number of people in England who own their homes outright is now higher than the number of people buying with mortgages for the first time since the 1980s. The English Housing Survey has revealed that the balance of ownership in England has tipped in recent years and there are now more owners than mortgage holders. While 7.4 million households in England are outright owners, the figure for mortgagedowners is 6.9 million.
YOUNG PEOPLE MORE LIKELY TO RENT Housing groups have warned of a ‘pricedout generation’ as the figures revealed a widening age divide. The majority of outright owners, 4.5 million households, have a resident aged 65 or over while the proportion of 25- to 34-year-olds who are owner-occupiers has dropped from 59% to 36% over the past 10 years.
Younger people are now increasingly likely to be found in private rented accommodation with just under half of 16- to 34-year-olds now renting from private landlords. The number of people renting has also increased in recent years, with the latest figures showing that 19% of households rent privately and 17% live in rented social housing. Neal Hudson from property consultancy Savills said the change in tenures was probably “a combination of both market and demographic factors, with fewer first-time buyers entering the market and more babyboomers approaching retirement and paying off their mortgage, helped by low mortgage rates”. He added: “The recent pick-up in first time buyer numbers will perhaps slightly slow the trend but will not be sufficient to reverse it. While house prices remain high relative to incomes and housing delivery remains below
required levels, we will continue to see the private rented sector expand.”
WINDING BACK THE CLOCK The National Housing Federation said the figures showed how the younger ‘priced-out’ generation had been hit by the rising market. Chief executive David Orr said: “As house prices continue to rise we’re in danger of winding back the clock on homeownership, with only the privileged few having any hope of affording it. “At the moment people who can’t buy a home have little or no choice but to rent privately, going from one short-term let to another at an ever-escalating cost. We believe that everyone should have a home they can afford, which means having more affordable homes to rent or buy through shared ownership and a private rental market that’s fit for purpose.”

Travel Discover Le Mans – LIFESTYLE
The famous Le Mans 24 hours race takes place from June 13-14, 2015 when a host of international visitors descend on an otherwise littleknown French region, called Sarthe.
it’s not just for petrol-heads
L
OOK beyond the screaming engines and smell of rubber, however, and you will find a delightfully unspoiled region that offers something for all the family. An hour west of Paris and just two hours from the ferry port at Cherbourg or Caen, Sarthe boasts a languid river, first-class cuisine, lush countryside and quirky towns and villages, not to mention the strikingly mediaeval ‘Vieux Mans’.
Families
City Slickers
While Le Mans is synonymous worldwide with the 24 hour race, a more closely guarded secret is the city’s 20 acre old centre – boasting roman walls, cobbled alleyways, half-timbered houses, and a gothic cathedral – which was the birthplace of English King Henry II. Irresistibly French, yet with strong English links, Le Mans was the birthplace of the Plantagenet dynasty, as its museums will attest. A spectacular gothic light show – La Nuit Des Chimeres - runs from July and September and is worth a detour in its own right. Be seriously spooked by the show’s nocturnal theatrical projections of gargoyles and ghouls on walkways around the city, with illuminations of historical figures, mythical creatures, romans engaged in ancient martial arts and monsters from medieval times set against the backdrop of the city’s roman walls and towers. Le Mans boasts a range of fine B&Bs and boutique hotels. Stay in the heart of Le Mans at Le Mountauban, a five modern B&B with minimalist rooms, complete with a large, airy lounge, a pool table and an indoor swimming pool and gym. There is a delightful courtyard and decked garden, enclosed by stone walls and free wifi throughout. Le Montauban (+33 2 43 24 32 08/www.lemontauban. fr) offers rooms from £85-125 per night based on two sharing.
West of Le Mans in the village of Maigné, l’Ecole des Garcons is a charming and very chic guesthouse with two rooms, a large garden and a very cosy spa room that was lovingly restored from an old boy’s school. It opened last summer. Situated in the middle of a lush, green valley, it is ideal for lazy weekends or eating at one of the 19 finest restaurants in Sarthe. L’Ecole des Garcons (+ 33 2 43 52 83 19/ www.lecoledesgarcons.com) offers B&B from £135 per night based on two sharing.
Wine and Food
Discover Le Loir (without an e) and its watermills and fine wines, along the river banks which run along the southern edge of the Sarthe department, matching in quality those of its famous neighbour, La Loire. Visitors can taste excellent AOC wines Jasnières and Coteaux du Loir, produced locally and immerse themselves in Carnuta, an impressive museum of man and the forest located near Bercé Forest. There are an array of impressive Water Mills and Le Moulin Page is the last mill on the Dinan River, a small tributary a few hundred
meters from the Loir. Perched on four floors overlooking the water, it ceased production in 1948 and has been converted into a B&B with two well-appointed rooms, a large garden, heated pool, sauna, Jacuzzi and steam room. Le Moulin Page (+ 33 2 43 46 16 98/www. moulinpage.com) offers relaxation packages from £100, including one nights’ B&B for two people, a welcome cocktail and one and a half hours’ private use of the spa, sauna and steam room.
South of Le Mans, La Flèche in the Loir Valley offers something for all the family. La Flèche Zoo spans 34 acres, home to 1,200 animals (including polar bears, grizzly bears, elephants, giraffes, penguins and sea lions), with daily shows and animations. It is close to Château du Lude - the most northerly of the Loire Chateaux - as well as the Benedictine Solesmes Abbey, where visitors can watch monks singing vespers. Or for the nautically inclined, hire a boat to cruise along the languid Sarthe River – no licence needed - it takes four days to reach Le Mans. The zoo has several super-stylish safari-style lodges where guests can spend the night overlooking the Alaskan Tigers, Arctic Wolves, Madagascan lemurs and even the resident polar bear. Each lodge has oversized windows that look out onto the enclosures, with a master suite, children’s bunk room,
Look out for two Essex drivers who will be taking part in Le Mans this year. Simon Dolan, who owns Jota Sport, was born in Chelmsford, and took a class win last year in their LMP2 (Le Mans Prototype) racing car. The self-made millionaire and entrepreneur will be hoping his Jota team can do the same again this year and is sharing track stints with young drivers Harry Tincknell (who raced for the winning team last Simon Dolan year) and new recruit, New Zealander Mitch Evans. Joining the Essex contigent and racing a factory-backed Aston Martin Vantage will be Maldon’s Stuart Hall who has raced many times at Le Mans and finished Stuart Hall the gruelling marathon event on three occasions.

La Flèche Zoo (+ 33 2 43 48 19 14/ www.safari-lodge.fr) offers one night half board from £110pp based on four sharing, including a two-day zoo pass. Alternatively, Le Gentleman is a popular boutique hotel which has recently opened in La Flèche. Situated in elegant townhouse dating back to 1725, it has been sympathetically refurbished with 14 rooms. There is a hidden garden for summer and a cosy lounge with a log fireplace for the colder months. Le Gentleman (+33 2 43 45 89 36/www.legentleman.fr ) offers rooms from £80-115 per night based on two sharing. And surprise, suprise they’re products any of us can stock up on affordably. 1) Jess uses the Phillips Visa Pure (£150, boots. com) twice a week to gently exfoliate her face. After using the Phillips Visa Pure Jess uses Trilogy Cream Cleanser (£22.50 trilogyproducts.com) as it is non-drying and leaves the skin smoother, softer and beautifully refreshed. 2) To achieve Jess’s make-up looks I always start by applying the Manuka Doctor ApiRefine Radiance Serum (£17.99, manukadoctor.co.uk)
onto Jess’s face to illuminate and boost her skin’s radiance before applying foundation. 3) For foundation, Jess swears by the MacStudio Sculpt (£25, maccosmetics.co.uk) as it is gel based and works really well with the Collection Lasting Perfection Concealer, (£4.19, Superdrug), to hide any imperfections. 4) Around Jess’s eyes I

also apply the Collection Lasting Perfection Concealer (as above), in cool medium, this product is great for covering up dark circles as well as highlighting areas around the nose as it’s slightly lighter than Jess’s natural skin tone. 5) For Jess’s eyebrows, I have been using the Collection 24hr Felt Tip Liner (£2.99, Superdrug), and it is amazing!. It is so great at filling in brown hairs so I use it to define her brows - it’s a beauty bargain. 6) When it comes to contouring, I have recently been using the NYX Taupe Blush (£6, NYXcosmetics.co.uk), this works really well with the Bobbi Brown Maui Bronzing Powder (£28, debenhams.com). 7) For Jess’s lashes she
loves the Girls With Attitude Glamour Lashes in Minx (£4.99, girlswithattitude. co.uk) as they look really natural. I then usually apply one of the Mac Eye Shadow’s (£13, debenhams.com) to create a natural smokey eye look.
8) To give Jess the perfect pout I apply the Manuka Doctor ApiRefine Lip Enhancer (£13.99, 30ml superdrug. com) to instantly plump her lips before applying the Collection Cream Puff Lip Cream (£2.99, Superdrug) to give them a subtle colour.

Hair
Curl Me to perfection
Is there such a thing as a salon professional blow dry in the comfort of your own home?
W
ELL, now there is, with the creation of the Pro Blo Group’s Curl Me product. This detachable hair brush allows you to dry and style your hair at the same time, to create luscious locks with shine, smoothness and plenty of volume. The award-winning salon is a haven for many men and women who enjoy being
pampered and looking after their skin and bodies with a range of fantastic treatments from non-surgical to conventional beauty treatments. This amazing product can transform hair from limp and lifeless to big and bouncy without having to use multiple hair tools. The Curl Me handle can be easily detached from the ceramic brush barrels allowing the barrel to remain in the hair until it has cooled, locking in the style. Celebrity hair stylists who work their magic on the likes of Michelle Keegan and Coleen Rooney are singing its praises and former TOWIE-favourite and Essex lovely Lucky Mecklenburgh recent tweeted about it being her favourite hair tool for a professional looking blow dry. To demonstrate how easy it is to use, celebrity hair stylist
Bekkie Mitchell (pictured) gives her top tips for styling both long and short hair, using Curl Me. Starting by de-tangling the hair completely with a tangle teaser or comb, this will make your job easier and your Curl Me barrels will glide through the hair for that glossy salon finish. Use of product is always a good thing a good Root boost spray or moose will give you a longer lasting hold and bounce, then depending on the thickness of your hair finish with a light serum or creme to kill any frizz. Using your blowdryer and your curl me large barrel, blow the hair as smooth as possible before rolling it up. Healthy hair gets the BEST results, conditioning treatments once or twice a week will help you achieve the perfect Curl Me look
Sectioning is your best friend, get sections as neat as possible before blow drying. You don’t want to get in a fluster with hair all over the place! Always spritz a light layer of volumizing hairspray over the barrels as they are cooling this will give you that extra hold to last all day! Using a nozzle on your hairdryer will direct the heat from the dryer onto your barrel. The hotter the barrel the smoother the hair the better the curl! Now is time to remove the barrels! Lift the barrels in an upwards angle and unwind the barrels one by one dropping the tight curls down as you go. To finish your look run your fingers through the tight curls for a big bouncy effect. If you desire a more tamed wave use a vent brush and
gently brush down section my section. Finally finish with a lightweight hairspray and loosely shake your hair to blend together. Now you are ready to rock your home made curly blow! £35 from www.problogroup.com
Tips for Short hairUsing the large barrels on shorter hair will give you an amazing big bouncy finish, with loads of volume at the roots. If you use a dry shampoo through the ends when you style to finish this will give the hair that great on trend texture and separation.
Tips for longer hairMy favourite look for longer hair using the Curl Me is to use a variety of sizes. Start by using the small barrels at the bottom near the nape of the neck to get a nice tight curl and get bigger as you go up.. So you finish with the large barrels across the parting for ultimate curl and volume! With longer hair try to leave the barrels for an extra 10 minutes to cool. This will help as the cooling process may take a little longer the more hair is wrapped around the barrels. The larger the barrel the bigger the volume and the smaller the barrel the tighter the curl. For a full curly finish use a full head of small or medium barrels and leave to cool for as long as possible. When the barrels are touch cool they will be ready to remove.

May is a blooming lovely month Plants are beginning to flower and show their true colours and inspire us to get out into the garden a little more.
Ivy-Leaved, Regal, Species, Scented Leaf and Unique. May is the month when everything gets busy in the garden and even the most relaxed of gardeners gets going. Watering and weeding are both key, as is sowing and planting out, depending on regional weather. It’s also time to get back into the swing of mowing the lawn.
B
UT it’s not just the May sunshine that is inspirational. Not only is there possibly the best flower and gardening celebration in the world currently taking place, the RHS Chelsea Flower Show (May 19-23), but Cultivation Street is up and running and looking for community gardening projects to enter their annual competition www.daviddomoney. com/cultivation-street. Cultivation Street is helping to bring back front gardens and revitalise our streets whilst at the same time encouraging people to take up gardening and grow their green skills. The front garden is often overlooked as a growing area with a solitary tree planted and not a flower in sight. Gardening myth of the month is that you can’t plant flowers under trees - a myth that’s not founded in fact at all as flower beds can actually help keep trees healthy. They are also more sustainable than grass in the long run because flower beds require less water. Choose perennials to minimise soil disturbance, and choose the smallest plants possible for the same reason. Carefully work them into the soil that’s there, rather than adding more soil or
compost for planting, and choose colours that tone well with your tree foliage. Early colour comes this month from the popular pelargonium, commonly known as geranium.
Pelargoniums flower from spring right through to late autumn. If you protect them from frost during the winter months they will continue to thrive for many years and so long as they have a bit of sun, they can
be grown pretty much anywhere. Pelargonium fan Baroness Floella Benjamin OBE is an ardent admirer, “When I see pelargonium my heart sings with joy. They are one of my favourite plants and they are such an easy patio plant to grow. I particularly love the vibrant flower colours that look stunning against their dark green foliage. Their scents are irresistible and fill the air with hints of rose, lemon, mint, fruit, nut, and spice”. There are seven different types of pelargonium – Angel, Decorative,

Russell Grant’s Weekly Horoscopes ARIES March 21st - April 20th
No matter how hard you try, it will be impossible to change some people’s minds. Turn your attention to more rewarding tasks. Reading, writing and doing research will give the intellectual stimulation you crave. It’s hard for an adventurous person like you to encounter roadblocks. You can’t stand running on the spot when you could be sprinting forward. Trying to force the issue will result in disaster. Treat these frustrations as an exercise in patience.
It feels like you’re out of step with the rest of the crowd. Instead of trying to ingratiate yourself to others, continue to march to the beat of your own drummer. Nothing earns respect like authenticity. Working with a quirky authority figure will be difficult. The qualities your boss enjoys one day may irritate them at another time. You’re better off finding another position. Better yet, you can launch your own business. You certainly have the executive ability to succeed.
LIBRA September 24th - October 23rd
You are ready to strike out for something bigger and better. Some of your attempts to branch out will be successful. People are willing to experiment and put your proposals into practice. When it comes to gaining entry to exclusive organisations, you’ll find difficulty. Don’t despair if you’re turned down for membership. You can find success on your own. It will take more time to reach your goals, so be patient. Advancing on your own will make every achievement even more delicious.
CAPRICORN December 22nd - January 20th
TAURUS April 21st - May 21st
LEO July 24th - August 23rd
You’ll be in demand, which is really pleasing. Unfortunately, you won’t be able to accept every invitation. Some people may feel snubbed by your refusal to attend, but it can’t be helped. Spreading yourself too thin will lead to exhaustion. Anyone who tries exerting undue pressure on you should be put in their place. You’d love nothing more than being a full time social butterfly, but that simply isn’t possible. You have personal and professional obligations to fulfil.
SCORPIO October 24th - November 22nd
You could find yourself put in charge of a group fund. At times, this role will seem like a blessing. At others, it will feel like a curse. Don’t let mislaid sympathy cause you to give money to an irresponsible friend or relative. It may be better to dole out small sums than dole out large amounts to them. If your relationship falls apart as a result, it can’t be helped. The last thing you want is to encourage addictive behaviour. Talk with a spiritual savvy advisor when you feel torn.
AQUARIUS January 21st - February 19th
GEMINI May 22nd - June 21st
VIRGO August 24th - September 23rd
SAGITTARIUS November 23rd - December 21st PISCES February 20th - March 20th
It will be difficult to achieve financial independence. The steady work you want isn’t forthcoming. It may be necessary to accept some form of temporary work or even an internship to make ends meet. The positive thing about this type of work is that it allows you to try out all sorts of industries. You may discover a field that gives you unexpected pleasure. Be open to trying new things. In the meantime, stick to a budget and don’t make any impulsive purchases. You might make a terrible social gaffe. If this happens, stay calm. Offer a sincere apology and move on. Eventually, the offended party will realise you are actually a very nice person and give you a second chance. Actions always speak louder than words. If you commit to being a helpful, positive person, others will respond appropriately. Resist the temptation to push an authority figure into making a decision. It really is better to maintain a diplomatic silence.
CANCER June 22nd - July 23rd
A driving desire for success will motivate you. You’re ready to advance in your chosen profession. Apply for a promotion or pursue a plum position at a different company. It would be wise to keep your plans to yourself. You don’t want a hidden rival to get wind of your intentions. If your best friend or romantic partner isn’t supportive of your dreams, discover why. It’s possible you have been neglecting them. Don’t let your ambition undermine your relationships.

Try not to be too severe with an enthusiastic loved one. You may think their plans are a little off the wall, but the proof will be in the pudding. Suspend judgement and try being as supportive as possible. If you’re struggling with a romantic partner, don’t throw money at the problem. Instead, clear your schedule to spend quality time together. It’s important to connect frequently so you don’t lose sight of each other’s hopes and dreams. It’s to put out an olive branch.
You’re worried about change. It will inevitably come, so you might as well embrace it. You never know when a new arrangement will serve you well. Turn a deaf ear to a relative’s gloomy predictions. The best way to attract good fortune is to generate positive energy. Sharing resources with someone will be a blessing in disguise. You’ll save money and acquire some valuable skills. Being considerate while maintaining healthy boundaries is critical.
Your dreams seem unrealistic and unattainable now. This is a bitter pill to swallow. Instead of forcing the issue, make a strategic retreat. Take this opportunity to run errands, catch up on your correspondence and attend to your health. Getting some distance from the issue will be therapeutic. After a period of quiet, you may discover that you’re no longer interested in pursuing a certain goal. If this happens, rejoice, relax and wait for a new plan to take shape. It may be impossible to please people who are always demanding. This is particularly stressful, since you have so many household responsibilities to attend to. If push comes to shove, you may decide to leave your job and devote more energy to your family. That’s perfectly reasonable. Finding a new position won’t be easy if you’re unwilling to push and promote your talent. Practice projecting confidence. Your chief duty is to convince others of your worth.

Alfa 4C Spider ready to order
O
RDER books for the new Alfa Romeo 4C Spider have officially opened, meaning customers can now get their name on the list at Alfa Romeo showrooms across the UK. Like its Coupé sibling, the new Alfa Romeo 4C Spider is built around an ultra-lightweight carbon fibre monocoque with minimal structural enhancements required in the transition from Coupé to Spider. The main developments include a new aluminium rollover structure, which is nestled underneath a black ‘halo,’ a specially-developed carbon fibre windscreen frame and an engine compartment
cross-member made from high-strength steel. The Coupé’s fastback rear end is replaced by classic and distinctive Spider buttresses and a new engine cover which also features three heat extractors and a subtle rear spoiler. There are significant changes to the front, too, with new, covered, projector-style xenon headlamps as standard on the Spider (and optional on the Coupé). Special attention has been paid to the aerodynamic characteristics of the Spider to ensure minimal wind and noise intrusion when the cloth roof is removed and stowed away, and for those owners who want to use their Spider
all year round, a carbon fibre hardtop will be available as an optional accessory at a later date. A new carbon-fibre air intake system, engineered to provide additional transmission cooling for track-focussed drivers, also joins the options list, while a number of all-new wheel designs debut on the 4C Spider too, in silver or dark finishes. The exterior features are rounded out with a vibrant new yellow paint option. Inside, a new Alpine head unit and standard Alfa Hi Fi sound system offer improved audio quality, usability and device connectivity, and to further enhance the Spider’s

cabin ambience, new options such as premium leather with accent stitching and matching door cards will be offered later in the year. Powered by the same, all-aluminium, 240hp, 1750cc engine as the Coupé, performance is on a par with the hardtop model, with a top speed of 160mph and a 0-to-60 time of less than 4.5
seconds. The Alfa Romeo 4C Spider is priced from £59,500 onthe-road, with an enhanced standard specification in line with the revised Coupé, including the upgraded audio system, luxury floor mats, glove compartment with leather cover, bespoke car cover and car care kit. Available as a free option
are parking sensors and cruise control, in addition its carbon fibre windscreen frame, new wheels and fared-in xenon headlamps, which are standard on the Spider. Magazine’s top award for Cactus THE new C4 Cactus has been named as DieselCar Magazine’s Car of the Year 2015. The award recognises the many bold and distinctive attributes of the Citroën brand’s latest model, which won the overall prize as well as being named as this year’s Best Crossover. In another fillip for Citroën, the latest-generation Grand C4 Picasso retained the Best MPV title, having won it for the first time last year. The new Citroën C4 Cactus has added two top DieselCar Magazine honours to its impressive list of UK industry awards received since its launch in September last year. Previous honours include Small Hatchback of the Year in the UK Car of the Year Awards and the highly sought-after title of BBC TopGear magazine Hatchback of the Year. Ian Robertson, Editor and Publisher of DieselCar Magazine, said: “Citroën doing what it does best – a funky, urban-friendly vehicle that is taking the sector by storm, “Clever touches like the roof mounted airbag, protective airbumps and chest-like dashboard cubby box show that the firm’s engineers are keen to innovate. “Keen pricing, frugal engines and some of the most comfortable seats in the business mark this C4 Cactus out as one of the most distinctive newcomers of the year.”
Ian Robertson added; “I am really proud to be able to announce that the Citroën C4 Cactus wins the title of DieselCar Magazine’s Car of the Year 2015. “It’s the perfect car for the times. It’s affordable, practical and incredibly comfortable, all wrapped up with a striking design that can be highly personalised.” In addition, the highly acclaimed Citroën Grand C4 Picasso was named as DieselCar magazine’s Best MPV for the second year running. The judges praised its combination

of style, comfort and affordability, adding that: “there’s a lengthy list of hi-tech equipment and safety functions to keep even the most ardent gadget geek happy.” Alongside the three wins for the new C4 Cactus and the Grand C4 Picasso, the DieselCar magazine Car of the Year Awards judges also highly commended C3 Picasso in the Compact MPV category. The newly independent DS brand also received a highly commended for DS 3 in the Premium Small Car category.
TDI-Tuning stand at the show
Tuning firm at farming show ESSEX-based tuning specialist TDI-Tuning had a stand at the Essex Young Farmers’ Country Show in Roxwell, Chelmsford, on Sunday, May 17. Displaying its Agricultural Diesel Tuning Box, specifically designed to optimise productivity in the demanding agricultural sector by enhancing the power and torque delivery of heavy machinery. “This is one of the most dynamic and content-rich Essex-based shows in the year,” says TDI-Tuning owner Graeme King. “In any sector, younger generations are keener than ever to learn and experience first-hand modern ways to
make core tasks easier, more cost-effective, and therefore more efficient. That’s what our tuning boxes for agricultural use are all about.” Both heavy operations such as ploughing, drilling and combining and lighter ones, like fertiliser-spreading and road transport, benefit from the bespoke software developed by TDI-Tuning. Higher, more fuel-efficient gears can be selected thanks to the Digital Tuning Box, which doesn’t affect the manufacturer’s anti-tune features. The tuning specialist’s team were available to answer questions and explain how the product works at the show.

Refresh for two best-sellers
N
EVER one to do anything in half measures, Honda has just revealed latest versions of two of its bestselling models from its range. So here than is the new hatchback Civic and big CR-V. The Civic’s changes include Honda’s City Brake system as a standard feature across the range, more Honda Connect infotainment, along with styling enhancements to the headlamps, now with daytime running lights, and bumpers and side skirts. Inside are new seat trim, chrome handles and the control panel finished in metallic black. Driving the new Civic on a wide variety of roads, including motorway, was a pleasant enough experience. The test car was a 1.6 i-DTEC, producing 120PS and with a nice, six-speed manual gearbox. I couldn’t really fault the way it did everything, from steering and handling to braking. It was comfortable to ride in, too. The overall fuel consumption as displayed on the trip computer was 57 mpg. A previous, gentler drive in the Civic with this engine showed a return of 71 mpg. This Civic can get to 62 mph in 10.5 seconds and has emissions at 94 g/km, so no annual road tax to be paid. Cost? £24,265 The latest CR-V, Honda’s popular SUV (Sports Utility Vehicle... whoever thinks these things up?) with more than 750,000 sales in Europe since its initial appearance in 1997. The test car had the new highpower version of the engine in the Civic; this 1.6 diesel puts out

TOM SCANLAN 160PS. The car was four-wheeldrive and had the new nine-speed automatic gearbox. With all this, emissions go up to 139 g/km, so that’s £115 per annum. A brief drive revealed a reasonably nippy performer (0-62 mph in 10.6 seconds) and a car that seemed fun and easy to drive. The gearbox gave smooth changes and I was never particularly aware of which gear the car was in. The EX version I tried is the range-topper and would set you back £34,120. That is a lot of money and the market will reveal in due course whether it feels it’s value for money. I must say that the car appeared to be well-finished and nicely-styled inside. It was also very fullyequipped. Honda claims a world-first intelligent Adaptive Cruise Control system. This ‘predicts’ if another vehicle is cutting in on you and automatically reacting to keep you free of an impact. Honda says that, via radar and a camera, by using an algorithm, the prediction can be up to five seconds ahead of such a situation. Clever, or what? Honda has worked on noise, vibration and harshness and, certainly, I was not aware of anything other than quite a refined sort of performance. The suspension has also been worked on, but, given the good condition of the local roads on my short trip, I couldn’t really come to
Honda CR-V
Honda’s smart-looking CR-V
a conclusion as to how well it really might work. The official combined fuel consumption figure for the test car is 42.2 mpg. Thanks to the City-brake system, insurance ratings have reduced by four groups. If you want a CR-V, but not at this price, the entry-level 1.6 i-DTEC 2WD costs £23,400. Honda treated journalists on this double car launch to a wander round their plant at Swindon. There, snatching
a couple of brief points from that visit, I learnt that the cars’ construction is so strong that you could attach a suction-pad hoist to a car with a panoramic glass roof, lift it up clear of the ground and neither the glass would shatter nor the glue holding it give out. Also, every so often, an engine is taken off the
line; it then goes into a laboratory where it’s run at maximum revs, under load, for up to seven weeks non-stop. Guess what the fuel bill is...£25,000! What would the Green Party say? Honda says that at least some of the energy generated goes back into use in the factory.

Green and Sullivan shine with 11 wickets and double century
I
T WAS certainly a week of contrasts with terrific results at the top and disasters further down. The main good news was some outstanding performances from teenagers; an excellent landmark for Aaron Beard, 11 wickets for Harry Green and a double century from Sean Sullivan really standing out from the pack. The first and second teams were matched up with South Woodford and won with the combined loss of two wickets. The thirds and fifths were matched up with Harlow and managed a combined score of 120. Aaron Beard (92) and Nick Prowting (86) combined superbly to achieve a nine-wicket win at South Woodford. They followed up a decent bowling performance with the home side scoring 210; James Clifford claimed four wickets. Mark Drain’s four wickets helped the second team bowl out South Woodford for 130. Paul Jones (39), Jack Moss (39) and
Gary Chidley (42) knocked the runs off fairly comfortably. A lack of batsmen in form left the third team exposed. Harlow’s middle order prospered from an ultraaggressive approach and made 226 which on another day, could have been closer to 26. Chelmsford’s batting then folded for just 63 with Naeem (3-28) and Ali (731) bowling well. The one bright spot was a fine six-wicket haul from Harry Green. The fourth team played out the close contest on the day and came up just short of a victory target of 244 in a draw. Loughton were allowed off the hook by some dropped catches and posted 243 for seven with Scarlioli (64), Bridges (55) and Almond (63) all making half-centuries. Both Neil Raisborough and Matt Davis took three for 50. Davis was then in fine form with the bat, making 96 and Phil Arnold finished unbeaten on 75 but
Tweet dreams come true
could not get his side over the line. Some young bowlers were made to suffer by Harlow’s fourth team. Aldred (40), J Coldwell (123) and A Coldwell (64) enabled the visitors to score 253 for two. Jack Campion (29) made more than half the runs as Sarwat Ali (5-9) ripped through the Chelmsford batting. Sunday had a shade of embarrassment when the under-16s were forced to play with just eight. That was enough though, Sean Sullivan showed what a very talented player he is in making 226; an early bid for the highest score of the season. Under- thirteen Luke Smith also prospered with 65 not out in a score of 352 for three. Harry Green picked up his second bag of five for the weekend and Tom Arnold took three wickets as Hornchurch Athletic did not threaten that target. Despite the struggle with numbers, there was a Sunday second team match.
FOR Arsenal fans young and old, the idea of emulating their heroes and scoring a vital goal at Emirates Stadium is the stuff of mere dreams. For Canvey Island lad, Matthew Turner, known to his friends and family as ‘Munch,’ however, that dream has become a reality. The 17-year-old has won the chance to enter his own team into the Europcar Cup Five-a-side Tournament, taking place at Emirates Stadium on Wednesday, May 27. Arsenal Legend, Ray Parlour, will also be on hand for teamtalks and to present the Cup to the winning team. Munch will go toe-to-toe with three other fans’ teams that also won their place in the tournament via a social media competition hosted by Europcar, the official partner of Arsenal. Supporters were invited to tweet an image of themselves in their Arsenal shirt for a chance to win. “I’ve been an Arsenal fan my whole life, so to get an opportunity to play on the same pitch as my footballing idols is
a dream come true,” explained Munch. Munch, who is currently studying at NCB Studio School in Basildon, has already selected his team of friends and family to join his squad for the day. “I would say we have an excellent chance of lifting the trophy on the day - even with my Dad in the side!” added Munch. The four fan teams, picked from the social media competition, will be joined by a team of Arsenal bloggers, a team of sports journalists, and a team from one of Arsenal’s many supporters’ clubs.

Strong start continues for top two teams 1ST TEAM
South Woodford 210 all out Chelmsford 214-1 (Chelmsford won by 9 wickets) Shepherd Neame Essex League Premier Division
CHELMSFORD continued their strong start to the season after an excellent batting performance led to a comfortable nine-wicket win against South Woodford. Despite an early breakthrough from Anthony Hill, Chelmsford were made to work hard in the field on a very good pitch that did not offer much for the bowlers, though they missed a number of chances that could have cost them dearly. At 87 for two from 30 overs, it looked like Chelmsford may be chasing a score in excess of 250, but the return of Ben Clifford (2-47) to dismiss opener Leat (67) instigated an excellent spell for Chelmsford, and they were able to bundle out the middle and lower order to restrict their opposition to 210 all out, Swash (58) generally holding things together. James Clifford (4-51) and Hill (331) were rewarded for their patience and discipline to record excellent figures on a pitch that offered little. The Chelmsford reply started confidently, with both openers looking to put away any loose deliveries. Despite the loss of debutant Rob Catchpole (14), Nick
Prowting joined Aaron Beard and they soon set about accumulating runs, manipulating the ball well and running hard between the wickets. After reaching their half-centuries Beard’s first League 50 at this level the batsmen immediately accelerated the scoring rate. The target was reached in the 41st over of the reply, with more than 16 overs to spare; Beard (92) rounding things off with a six and moving clear of Prowting (86). 2ND TEAM
Chelmsford 133-1 South Woodford 130 all out (Chelmsford won by 9 wickets) Shepherd Neame Essex League Premier Division
CHELMSFORD made it two wins from two with a comprehensive win at Chelmer Park over visitors South Woodford. Having won the toss and chosen to bat, South Woodford were soon rueing their decision at 51 for five from 17 overs. Mark Drain proved too quick and accurate for three batsmen, all clean bowled and Rob Hayto’s offspin lured a couple more into lbw dismissals. Chelmsford’s other three spinners then came to the party sharing four of the next five wickets before Drain returned to wrap up the innings at 130 all out in the 50th over, only
number 8 bat Wickramaratne (43) providing any significant resistance. Drain finished with four for 30, Hayto two for 27, Tom Halsey two for 8, with one wicket apiece for Neal Abhyankar and Stuart Everard. Despite having over three hours available to get the required runs, Chelmsford seemed to want to get the job done quickly. Paul Jones opened with 39 at nearly a run a ball before being bowled at 55 for one. Skipper Gary Chidley (42) joined Jack Moss (39), and this pair proceeded to knock off the runs at six an over to claim the win with more than an hour and a half or 25 overs to spare. 3RD TEAM Harlow 226 all out Chelmsford 63 all out (Harlow won by 163 runs) Shepherd Neame Essex League Premier Division
LAST year’s champions were well and truly thrashed at Harlow. Young leg spinner Harry Green provided the highlight with an excellent spell of six for 55. Harlow lost an early wicket but Burton and Baig forged a frustrating partnership. Baig (51) mixed some excellent big shots with a number of leading edges and mis-hits that eluded fielders and extravagant misses. Burton (35) somehow acquired runs
but having reached 100 for one they fell in quick order. The middle order continued to play big shots, some hit superbly, others hit just well enough to clear fielders or just badly enough to fall short. Naeem (25) became Green’s second wicket but the fifth wicket partnership between Ali and Farooq took the game away very quickly. The score suddenly shot up with more than 60 scored from six overs. A score of well over 250 looked on the cards until Green intervened again dismissing the two set batsmen in successive deliveries, Ali (33) had looked a good player, Farooq (40) had just swung from the hip but with great success. Stephen Drain (2-27) and Green (6-55) combined to close out the innings for 226. Given the position with 10 overs to go that was a score Chelmsford would have settled for. The opening pair reached 23 against what looked like a decent attack of Naeem and Ali. Naeem produced a superb delivery to make the breakthrough and the floodgates opened. James Arnold (22) watched in horror from the other end, seeing six partners fall before becoming the ninth out, making an effort to force things with only two wickets left. Ali (7-31) rounded things off in
the next over, Naeem (3-28) arguably having taken the more important wickets. 4TH TEAM Chelmsford 241-8 Loughton 243-7
