Entertainment galore under the Big Top at the Strawberry Fair

A taste of summer

The Strawberry Fair comes to Shenfield Common this weekend

FUN packed family day is in store this weekend as the Brentwood Strawberry Fair returns with a whole range of free activities for all ages to enjoy. The event, organised by Brentwood Borough Council, takes place on Saturday, June 13, on Shenfield Common, from 11am to 4pm and will include a Children’s Zone with entertainment from the popular Rocky from Rocky’s Funhouse. There will also be inflatables, animal petting, small rides, face painting, and a Gamewagon. Entertainment will be a heady mix of local performers, dance groups and bands from The Hermit, hosted by Billericay and Brentwood’s local radio station

Phoenix FM and compered by DJ Tony Smith. The quintessentially British theme continues with Punch and Judy shows throughout the day. For car enthusiasts there will be a range of Classic Cars with the Best in Show competition judged by the new Mayor of Brentwood, Councillor Mark Reed and supported by Nick’s Tyres. A range of stalls will sell gifts and crafts, plants and garden accessories, children’s books, jewellery and balloons. And it wouldn’t be the Strawberry Fair without some strawberries and cream! Enjoy with a glass or two of Pimms, local beer, sparkling wine, crepes, pizza and posh burgers are also on the menu of the day. Brentwood Borough Council’s

Chair of the Community and Health Committee, Councillor William Russell, said: “The Strawberry Fair is a fantastic day out for all the family with a village fete atmosphere in the heart of the town. “You can watch the local entertainment in the Big Top while enjoying some great food and drink - especially the strawberries and cream to get you in the mood for Wimbledon later this month. Children can enjoy the rides and see the animals we will have from Warescot Farm and Essex Ferret Welfare Society.’’ n Although there is no parking at the event, visitors can park at the nearby Brentwood County High School for £2 with proceeds going to Conservators of Shenfield Common, or use the Town Centre car parks or public transport.

Auction raises funds for Surtees foundation

SSEX auctioneers Clive Emson were invited by the Brooklands Motor Museum based in Weybridge, Surrey, to conduct an auction for their members at an evening with former racing champ John Surtees. Surtees was the only man to win both Motorcycling World Championships and the Formula 1 World Championship in 1964. The auction of a signed John Surtees print and limited edition crockery set depicting the achievements was organised to raise funds for the Henry Surtees Foundation. Henry Surtees, son of John, was tragically killed

in a motor racing accident at Brands Hatch in 2009. Auctioneer on the night, Paul Bridgeman, commented: “I was delighted to be able to offer this rare crockery set, especially as John Surtees is one of my sporting heroes. “To my knowledge we set a new record price for a complete set sold under the hammer, and raised a total of £1,670 for the Henry Surtees Foundation on the night. It was also a wonderful surprise for John Surtees who had no idea the auction was going to be taking place.” Clive Emson Land and Property Auctioneers, are more used to appearing

on Homes Under the Hammer, rather than selling motor racing memorabilia. They hold regular auctions from Essex to Cornwall but were delighted to step in and help raise funds for the Henry Surtees Foundation. n Paul was also invited to be compere at an event at Chelmsford City Football Club, where football manager Barry Fry gave an entertaining account of his years as manager of Southend, Peterborough United and Birmingham City.

Free Pint to celebrate history BRENTWOOD Brewing Company is joining in the celebration of the first national beer day and the 800th anniversary of the Magna Carta, by offering a free pint of specially brewed Magna Carta beer, Cheers John. Visitors to the Brewery Shop on Monday, June 15 can join in the nationwide Cheers to Beer at the brewery and raise a glass at 12.15pm. The date and time are significant, because 800 years ago in 1215 the Magna Carta was sealed. MD of Brentwood Brewing Company, Roland Kannor, said: “What better way to celebrate

our national drink? Please come along and enjoy a refreshing pint of Cheers John on us. “Many of the rights and freedoms we take for granted today stem from the Magna Carta, so maybe we should think about that a bit too.” Beer Sommelier and author Jane Peyton came up with the idea for Beer Day Britain which has the backing of major industry organisations like Britain’s Beer Alliance, British Beer and Pub Association and the Society of Independent Brewers. CAMRA is also rallying members to support the day.

Beer was so important back then, it got a mention in the famous historical document in article 35 of the charter: “Let there be throughout our kingdom a single measure for wine and a single measure for ale and a single measure for corn, namely The London Quarter,’’ which was a standard measure in use back in 1215.

The hospice is calling on families and pet lovers to sign up to the 3.5km Woofs and Wellies walk at Thames Chase Community Forest, Upminster, on Sunday, June 28. “This is a fantastic opportunity for all the family and their pets to get together and have fun while supporting the hospice,” said Katy Woodgate, the hospice’s Events and Community Manager. “This is our fifth Woofs and Wellies event and we are hoping the community will sign up so we can make it even more successful than in previous years.” The walk begins at 10am at the Thames Chase restaurant. Tickets cost £5 for adults, £2.50 for under 12s, under 3s go free and £2.50 for dogs.

A HORNCHURCH licensee has been recognised as the top solo landlady in the country. Sandy Castle, landlady of the Fatling on the town’s High Street, was the only woman running a pub on her own to reach the finals of the British Institute of Innkeeping’s Licensee of the Year Awards 2015. Sandy, who has been at the Fatling since 2006, has worked in the pub industry for 25 years, was presented with her finalist’s plaque at a special event held at the top of London’s BT Tower. In her nine years at the Fatling, Sandy has built it into a thriving pub, loved by local office workers, shoppers, families, groups of friends and live music fans. She has turned it into a hub of the local community, hosting events such as ‘Hornchurch in Harmony’ and raising funds for both local and national charities.

Park & Ride scheme proves popular

Karate instructor is now double award-winner

A new Park & Ride scheme in Colchester has already accounted for around 20,000 passenger journeys less than two months since it opened for business. Located just of the A12 at Junction 28 in Cuckoo Farm Way, Colchester, the service has been running since April 13 for free, on a trial basis. The official opening this week saw passenger fares chargeable for the first time after the fare-free trial period. Essex County Council’s Leader, Cllr David Finch, said: “The free trial period has enabled us to understand what works well and what could be improved. It always takes a bit of time to develop a core customer base as we saw with Chelmsford’s Park and Ride services which are now thriving and have expanded in recent years. “I am confident the Colchester service will prove equally popular for people travelling into the historic town centre.” The service costs £3 per adult return, per day. Children aged 5-15 can travel for £1, those under-5 can travel for free.

Dot Naylor, 81, recognised for her outstanding volunteering contribution

LACK belt Dot Naylor, of South Woodham Ferrers, has received a Point of Light Award from Prime Minister David Cameron, just a year after picking up the Unsung Hero title at the Active Essex Sports Awards. Dot, is one of the UK’s oldest female karate instructors and has volunteered for more than 50 years, coaching thousands of youngsters in the ancient Japanese martial art. When told she was receiving the award, Dot replied: “Why are they giving me this? I am just doing something I love.” Dot took up karate in 1965 after watching a demonstration by four Japanese masters, at a time when it was very much a male-dominated environment. She still teaches regularly at the age of 81, instructing at evening classes and on Sunday mornings at her club, the KUGB Chelmsford (Shotokan Karate Club). Dot says she comes to the club

because she enjoys spending time with the students. “They are like my family,” she said. “They are an absolute joy, watching them try to learn things. ASTWOOD Primary School and Nursery, Southend-on-Sea have embarked on a mission to power their classrooms with renewable energy.

So what is the idea behind Solar Schools? The idea is a simple one: everyone chips in a little bit of money to buy and install solar panels for a local school. The solar panels save money for the school by slashing their electricity bill. The schools will also earn an income through the FeedIn Tarrif, which is a government incentive that rewards the production of renewable energy. This will free up money in the school’s budget for the really essential stuff, such as computers and books. Why do schools need solar panels? Solar panels offer schools more than just a great way to reduce unnecessary costs. They also help to cut down on the emission of the greenhouse gases which are responsible for

climate change. Having solar panels on the school roof will also help children learn more about renewable energy. Rebecca Perman, headteacher is delighted to take part in Solar Schools to secure solar panels and provide a positive visual platform to educate the pupils. “We’re working with two other schools in Eastwood to engage the whole local community on the importance of sustainability and carbon reduction,” she said. How much money will they have to raise? The schools are aiming to raise £8,000 by the end of the summer through various fundraising activities. They are signed up to the Solar Schools project, which is a crowdfunding platform run by the charity 10:10. Nation’s favourite wild flowers revealed

ACK in March we asked people to join a poll to vote for the Nation’s Favourite wild flower. Three months on and the winning bloom has been chosen. From a shortlist of 25 wild flowers, including honeysuckle, cowslip, poppy and foxglove, two spring woodland flowers have emerged as favourites in each of the UK countries. While bluebell, known for carpeting spring woodlands in shimmering indigo, has come out on top in England and taken most votes overall in the poll, in a surprise result the humble primrose has clearly stolen the hearts of the Welsh, the Scottish and the Northern Irish. Dr Trevor Dines, botanical expert at Plantlife, who are behind the vote says: “I’m really surprised – and quite delighted - that primrose has come out tops in Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. This might reflect their curious pattern of occurrence; in northern and western Britain, where

it’s wet and cool, primroses often spread out of woods and colonise roadside banks and verges. Perhaps they’re more visible as a result and are just more part of people’s lives.” Many voters were keen to explain their choice of wildflower. “One chap told me he voted for primrose because he thought they were ‘just perfect, and could not be improved in any way’”. The Nations’ Favourite Wild Flower Vote is part of Plantlife’s 25th anniversary celebrations. Sparathon packs a punch for hospice

OXERS will be fighting fit and on their toes as they pack a punch to raise funds in a Sparathon for Saint Francis Hospice. Reg Davies, 56, and Billy Hollyfield, 27, who run Ringside Gym in Elm Park, insist no one will be on the ropes or need saving by the bell during the six hour sparathon this Saturday, June 13. Robin Dupre, the undefeated cruiserweight from Dagenham, will join Reg Davies’s son Chris, 25, and more than 40 members of the gym as they trade blows for a good cause. “It’s going to be a really fun day and we are hoping people will come along and help us to raise as much money as we can for the hospice,” said Reg, who has been a boxing trainer for 25 years. “My mother-in-law Jeannette Barnes passed away at the hospice last year from cancer.

“We were so pleased with the way she was looked after. The care was first class and my wife’s family were very impressed.” Billy also said his nan Pauline Parkin was cared for at the hospice in the past. “We are thrilled that Reg and Billy have organised this exciting Sparathon to support the hospice,” said Linda Borg from the hospice’s fundraising team. “I’m looking forward to being there on the day and maybe even sporting a pair of boxing gloves. “It is thanks to the generosity and support of local people and organisations like this that we are able to provide the best care and support to everyone who needs it.” Everyone is welcome at the boxing fest, which starts at 9am on June 13 at the boxing gym on Kings Estate, at the rear of 1 Broadway Parade, Elm Park Avenue.

owned business in the country to grow, grade, store, wash, hand-cook, fresh prepack and distribute its own potatoes, all from one family farm. “We grow around 12 different varieties of potato on the farm,” said Robert. “They include Maris Peer, Estima, Desiree, King Edwards and Marfona for fresh potato sales. The crisping varieties have different cooking qualities including Lady Roseeta and Lady Claire. The soil type in the Colne Valley is pretty mixed but carefully managed planting and irrigation, when required, means that we manage to produce a bright, good looking potato.” In 2006 Robert and Laura decided to take their rural business one step further and set about diversifying into crisp production - launching Fairfields Farm Crisps. The major driver was to add value – they felt if

they could grow first class potatoes they could also make premium crisps. “Making crisps is a pretty simple process,” says Laura. “But it takes a whole lot of work to get from a seed potato to a bag of crisps. It’s a bonus that absolutely everything takes place on the family farm, from digging up and hand selecting the quality of the potatoes used, to washing, slicing, cooking and bagging at the on-site factory. “As a result every packet of crisps can be traced back to the potatoes used and the exact field they were grown in – we’re really proud of that.” Laura continues, “The East of England Co-op’s Sourced Locally Fortnight is a fantastic initiative to encourage local people to buy local food and we are proud to be counted as one of many trusted suppliers.”

It’s nearly summer, so that means Wimbledon and a sudden urge by many to pick up a racket and play tennis. What could be better then than Great British Tennis Weekend (GBTW), which will see courts across Essex serve up free tennis over two further weekends this summer - June 13-14 and August 1-2. The first GBTW for 2015 took place in May.

PORTS presenter Gabby Logan and former tennis pro Annabel Croft are both Ambassadors for GBTW. Made in Essex chatted to the ‘tennis ladies’ about their involvement in this fantastic free initiative to inspire new fans to the game.

What’s your favourite thing about tennis? It’s a brilliant way to keep fit but also very sociable. It is a game that has so many elements I love the power you need to generate when you hit the ball but then the accuracy if you actually want to get it in. How did you get into tennis? I got into tennis while on holiday in Spain when I was 9 years old. I played my first match there and completely fell in love with the sport. I then joined my local club when I got back to England and used to set up my own matches with other children. What is your favourite thing about tennis? I think tennis is a beautiful sport to watch as players’ movements

can be very aesthetically pleasing. But I also think that your personality comes out on court, depending on factors such as the score – it can reveal someone’s true nature which is fascinating. What’s your favourite thing about summer? The summer has always been centred round the tennis season. Summer wouldn’t be the same without my strawberries and cream at Wimbledon. Do you have a favourite place to play tennis? I like to play on a back court with a friend, without anyone watching me and I can just whack the ball around – that to me is heaven. I also love to play in Portugal with my family when on holiday

I think it’s a great chance for someone who has never played to pick up a racket and try something new. Tennis is unique in that people keep playing right into their nineties which can’t be said for many sports. With the National Flower Show at Hylands Park just weeks away, we caught up with Kimberley Howard, Chargehand at the sumptuous Chelmsford country estate and talked gardens, and the beauty of flowers.

Tell us a bit about you? I’m Kimberley Howard, 25. I grew up in Chelmsford but have since moved to Colchester where I live with my husband and two cats. I have worked within Hylands Park since Autumn 2006, originally as a student whilst carrying out my studies at Writtle College. I completed both a National Diploma and Bachelor of Science degree. After

graduating my predecessor retired and I applied for the position of Chargehand. I haven’t looked back.

How did your love of gardening come about? What are your first memories? I am an outdoors person and I always took an interest in plants. I remember I would often spend time in my Grandma’s garden helping her keep it tidy and harvest the fruit and vegetables. However I also had a passion for building dens in gardens and I’m known for ‘remodelling’ a beautiful Forsythia much to my parents’ dismay. Gardening inspirations - both past

Dementia Adventure is a social enterprise based in Chelmsford that has been providing short breaks for people living with dementia and their carers since 2009. They offer a range of dementia-friendly holidays that are supported by an expert term of volunteers and trained professionals. We find out how it’s helped one family.

ROM walking holidays in the Lake District to sailing trips from Maldon, people can choose from bespoke holidays for couples or group trips. Last year they took 78 people on various holidays, and continue to expand to include more diverse locations and activities. Although the holidays may only be temporary, the impact on the families with dementia is long lasting. Trevor was 51 and Margaret 45 when they first noticed things weren’t right – they initially thought that Trevor was just being forgetful but his condition rapidly deteriorated. Before long he was unable to carry out simple tasks, such as using his computer, and several minor road traffic accidents in a matter of months resulted in him no longer being able to drive. He was eventually diagnosed with early onset dementia in 2012, at the age of 59. Trevor went from being a successful sales manager to someone who now requires round-the-clock care. Margaret works as a parttime district nurse so when she is at work a carer comes to the house to sit with Trevor until he is collected to go to a local day care centre. Their children live locally and help whenever possible but they also have full-time

jobs and their own families to look after. Trevor wants to be active and live life as normally as possible but has often felt frustrated because much of the support he gets hasn’t encouraged this. People living with dementia, and the people who care for them, want to have a break from time to time and to also get away together. Often they reach the point at which they realise they need extra support to do this, and Dementia Adventure can offer this support. Trevor and Margaret are looking forward to a five day holiday in Devon this month, where they will be able to enjoy time together as a couple away from the stresses of everyday life. Core to Dementia Adventure’s work is the belief that people with dementia shouldn’t see their diagnosis as the ‘end of their lives’ or the end of anything fun. If people stay in touch with the

activities that they love to do and keep on doing them, then they will stay better for longer. The health and wellbeing benefits of such trips include improved appetite, better sleep, increased verbal expression and uplift in mood. Dementia Adventure has a team of trained and experienced volunteers, led by one full-time staff member Jesse Reed, who support carers in looking after their loved ones. On each trip there are two people to support each person living with dementia: their carer and one volunteer. But it’s not just the people living with dementia who benefit from the trip. With all the logistical arrangements taken care of and an itinerary created that suits everyone’s needs, both the carer and person with dementia can concentrate on themselves and each other. Peer support is a crucial part of the group holidays too, as caring for a loved one can be isolating and put a great deal

ith election fever beginning to die down and a Conservative government now in place, attentions are turning towards which pre-election pledges will now be implemented. A Conservative government certainly means an end to the Labour-

pledged mansion tax, but what will it mean for the housebuilding industry? Here, we take a look at the reforms promised by the Conservatives in their pre-election manifesto, and take in the reactions of key players in the housebuilding and estate agency industries.

Brandon Lewis has retained his position as minister for housing and planning, after a brief period of confusion when he was erroneously replaced by Mark Francois on the website of the Department for Communities and Local Government (DCLG). Lewis has held the position since

last July, and was congratulated by the Association of Residential Lettings Agents (ARLA), who described him as a “highly effective minister”. ARLA is also leading the argument to elevate the position of housing minister to cabinet level, amid concerns that the position has long been undervalued in government, especially with housing having played a key role in this year’s general election.

THE INDUSTRY REACTS Housebuilders Steve Errington, chief executive of Story Homes “Story Homes welcomes the election of a majority Conservative government, which has already made a commitment to deliver muchneeded new housing throughout the country. “We would like the new government to look at supporting affordable mortgages and a return to high loan-to-value mortgage products. A normalisation of a 5% to 10% deposit for customers would help to stimulate housebuilding. With the National Planning Policy Framework embedded in most local authorities, government support to ensure that planning departments are resourced to prevent a bottleneck would be a prudent move.” Andrew Richards, group managing director of Linden Homes “What the housebuilding industry now needs from the new government is stability. Stability translates into certainty around planning reform, ‘homebuyer enablers’ on offer and the wider economy to help keep Britain building. We hope that this government will command that level of guarantee and solidarity in the planning process to spur the delivery of much-needed homes across the country.

“We recently issued ‘Housing our Nation – a Manifesto’ in a bid to inform the debate with our suggested actions to help ease the housing crisis...[and] we look forward to discussing [these] ideas with the newly elected government.” Ian Dyke, managing director of Rippon Homes “The government and the locally elected council members now need to address the housing shortage, which is driving up home prices for both first- and second-time buyers. “The market is driven by supply and demand - if the supply is increased then the market price will stabilise. Housing is not an industry that can be switched on and off like other commodities - it takes up to 12 months to bring a new housing site to fruition to provide new homes, so all stakeholders must look at the process and the planning of developments to take this into account.”

Estate Agents Nick Leeming, chairman of Jackson-Stops & Staff “The clouds that have hung over the London property market have now dispersed. Having seen the number of property transactions slow down sharply over the last six months as the prospect of mansion tax loomed on the horizon, we expect to see

greater activity in the London market from now on. “High valued properties, while still affected by some of the more recent tax changes, should see more stable demand and the resurgence of international interest. Now that London is open for business again we expect the wider markets to respond accordingly.” Lucian Cook, head of research at Savills “We expect much of the deferred demand from the pre-election period to flow back into the prime market over the remainder of 2015 and 2016, particularly given that the spectre of a mansion tax is now removed from the market.” Adam Day, founder of Hatched “I believe this to be great news for the housing market, particularly in the short term, evading the potential surprises and uncertainty that a Labour majority or hung parliament would have created. “If we were faced with a Labour government today, they would have enforced rent cap rises and banned tenants’ fees. Both of these proposed policies would have interfered with market forces, something that should never be controlled. With a Conservative government, it is ‘business as usual’ and I predict that the market will continue to grow.”

Russell Quirk, founder of eMoov.co.uk “Those at the top end of the UK property market will be breathing a sigh of relief having avoided a hefty Labour-led mansion tax. “I don’t think there will be huge implications at the other end of the market. The Conservatives introduced the new Help to Buy ISA to encourage first-time buyer votes and plan to extend it. I can’t see them making a U-turn on their stamp duty amendments either so the lower end of the market should benefit to some extent.”

Private Rented Sector Matt Hutchinson, director of SpareRoom.co.uk “A Tory majority is a worry for UK renters. The Conservatives’ pledges all but ignore the 11 million people in rented accommodation – in particular their concerns around rising rents and letting agents’ fees - with a tunnelvision focus on home ownership. “Trying to get people on to the property ladder is the only box ticked. A supply shortage has led to unbelievable strain on the rental market over the past five years. The Tories need to act fast to ensure renters have access to affordable housing and are better protected from rent rises, particularly when interest rates rise and landlords see their mortgage repayments go up.”

hatever your political persuasion, the outcome of the general election was, from a property industry perspective, a positive one. The machinations of creating a working partnership from a hung parliament may well have set back what has become a largely stable property market across the country. Regions outside London and the South East have been recovering determinedly over the past few months after a destructive few years. It was disappointing to hear some agents – unsurprisingly, those dealing with the headline-hogging “prime Central London” market – crowing about the likely surge in property prices in some parts of the capital when the prospect of a ‘Mansion Tax’ disappeared. While such rises are beneficial to some homeowners – and, of course, the agents they employ to sell their expensive homes – it hardly assists those already struggling at the foot of the property ladder in those areas. It is widely recognised that modest year-on-year growth in property prices is the best position for everyone, though with the caveat, of course, that there’s an affordability factor in all this; that would-be buyers are able to borrow enough to buy the property they need in the area they would like to live in, without overstretching themselves now or risking such a scenario in the future. We are so used to our record-low base rate, and consequently some of the record-low mortgage rates on offer, that it would be easy to forget (accidentally or otherwise) the certainty that from here, there’s only one way they are going to go. The Bank of England has been putting back its likely date for starting to raise the base rate until sometime in 2016, which will provide further leeway to increase their income by the time their currently low mortgage rate inevitably rises. But we all have to remember that whether we’re on variable or fixed rates, there will come a day when that 0.5% base rate will be closer to 5% and the mortgage rates hovering just over 1% will be a dim and distant memory. Government-supported schemes in the new homes industry in particular might also start to disappear and buyers will be back at a market-led “sink or swim” position. We all have to be careful that we know where the other lifebelts are kept before we fall in.

In the spotlight: Wandsworth This month we take a look at the London borough that is home to one of the biggest regeneration projects in Europe

WHERE IS IT? The London borough of Wandsworth is located in South West London, bordering with Hammersmith and Fulham to the north, Lambeth to the east, Merton to the south and Richmond to the west. Towns here include Putney, Earlsfield, Clapham, Balham, Tooting and Battersea.

WHO LIVES THERE? The 2011 census found that 307,000 people live here, although that number is likely to have increased significantly in the last four years. There has been a notable increase in young families moving to the borough, with 44% of residents aged 25 to 44 (up from 36% in 2000) and the proportion of children aged under five up by 33% in the same period.

Nine Elms, a district in the north-eastern corner of the borough, is home to one of Europe’s biggest regeneration areas, with 18,000 new homes in the works (at least 5,000 of which will be low-cost). The project, which also aims to create 25,000 new jobs, stretches across 195 hectares and includes more than 20 interconnected development sites. There will also be an extension to the Northern Line, with two new tube stations at Nine Elms and Battersea expected to open by 2020. The regenerated area will benefit from three iconic attractions – the newly developed Battersea Power Station, the new United States Embassy and New Covent Garden Market.

Hip to be square Barts Square is bringing new homes to an historic but long-neglected part of the Square Mile

tep into the shops, pubs and bars of Smithfield and you’re likely to see a real mix of clientele, from bushy-bearded hipsters to suited-and-booted City professionals. The district’s location, neighbouring the historic creative quarter of Clerkenwell and the commercial HQs of the Square Mile, attracts a truly diverse spectrum of people to work and play, but it’s not really known as a residential quarter. Developer Helical Bar is certainly hoping to change that with its Barts Square mixed-use scheme, transforming an area right on the edge of Smithfield Market and opposite St Bart’s Hospital. While retaining a number of interesting buildings and

facades, the development will also replace some mundane post-war architecture with some high-quality new office space and over 200 stylish new homes. “Whenever a new central London development site comes to market, there is invariably considerable hype about ‘unique locations’ and ‘once in a lifetime development opportunities’,” says Nikki Gibbard, development executive for Helical Bar, who has been preparing the scheme for release for over four years. “While these sweeping statements need to be taken with a healthy pinch of salt, it would not be hyperbolic to say that Barts has presented us with a truly fantastic opportunity to create a place like no other. There are currently

around 7,500 residences in the City of London and it is unlikely that more than 12,000 will ever be permitted, for several reasons. “These include the need for the Square Mile to retain its business focus as a centre of global commerce, coupled with a lack of large-scale residential infrastructure resulting from its historic business dominance. “Therefore to be able to develop 236 high quality and carefully designed residences on a 3.2-acre site steeped in historical charm is, for us, an unrivalled opportunity.” Barts Square will feature apartments and penthouses in a number of discrete buildings, creating some new garden areas and a large piazza, where a new range of shops and restaurants

will provide a focal point for the new community living there. There’s a considerable choice of size and layout of property, giving each an individual feel, particularly in those behind the retained historic frontages. Gibbard and the Helical Bar team have deliberated at length about the interior design, formulating a range of muted, textured materials and finishes that are contemporary without sacrificing a more traditional, homely quality. Lindsey Abbott’s motto is ‘live well, laugh often and love much.’ She has run Chelmsford based fitness business Shimmy ‘n’ Groove since January 2013.

FEW friends asked me to motivate and help them feel fitter and potentially lose weight. So I hired the local church all and got moving. Word amongst friends started to spread and people who came along for the sessions enjoyed the activity, increased their energy levels and some lost inches too,” Lindsey explains. Having been Head of Dance at a local secondary school for 10 years, Lindsey used her choreographic skills to devise some fun danceinspired aerobic routines. “Bringing a sense of fun into your chosen workout is key to your well-being and can vastly improve your results.” adds Lindsey. Rhubarb And Stem Ginger Bavarois Ingredients:

500ml stock Syrup 900 ml Rhubarb puree 1/4 of a Lemon Juiced 900 ml Whipping cream 11 Sheets of Leaf gelatine 3 fine diced stems of ginger in syrup Method

Soften the gelatine in iced water for 5 minutes and squeeze out the remaining water. Whip the cream loosely and set aside in the fridge. Bring the stock syrup to the boil, add gelatine and stir to dissolve. Add the fruit puree and stem ginger to the gelatine mixture and stir until cooled. Fold the fruit puree mixture through the whipping cream until combined Pour into 6 martini style glasses allow to set for 3 hours in the fridge Garnish with stem ginger and Chantilly cream or mixed berries.

Pan roasted Essex pork cutlet, pork belly and Braeburn apple croquettes with cider and sage reduction (serves 4) Ingredients:

Method:

200g of pork belly skin removed 500ml duck fat 2 braburn apples grated 500g of king Edward potatoes 200g panko bread crumbs 1 egg 3tbs flour 4 Large pork Cutlets 100g Diced Black Pudding to Garnish 500ml of chicken stock 2 sage leaves 250ml good local Cider 1 onion 1 carrot

Confit the pork in the duck fat for around 4 hours at 350 degrees until the meat is melting and tender, shred with a fork while still warm and leave to one side Boil the potatoes for mashing season with salt and pepper Combine the apple, pork and mashed potatoes and mix well Roll into finger length portions and allow to chill until set and firm Flour egg and bread crumb the croquettes and leave to set once more in the fridge.

Method: For the cider sage reduction:

Gently fry the carrot and onion in a little oil until golden, add the cider and reduce by 2/3rd, add the chicken stock and reduce by 3/4. The sauce should be thick and glossy, finish by stirring in a nob of cold butter To Serve: Fry the croquettes in a little oil until lightly golden and then finish in the oven to ensure the centres are piping hot While the croquettes are frying season the pork and pan roast the

1lb of white carb meat (from the claw if possible) 1 whole egg 3tbs Mayonnaise 2tsp Dijon Mustard 2tbs chopped flat leaf Parsley 1/4 tsp Celery Salt 1/4 tsp Spanish Paprika 150g Panko Breadcrumbs For the Eastern shore pub sauce:

1/4 tsp. cayenne pepper 1/4 tsp. Salt 1/4 lemon Juiced 500ml tomato sauce Method: Eastern Shore Pub Sauce

Sweat off the onion in the vegetable oil until soft and lightly browned. Combine all ingredients together and whisk well Refrigerate until required

1/4 of an onion finely diced 1floz vegetable oil 1tsp English mustard powder Method: Fulton’s Crab Cakes Whisk the egg Mayonnaise 1floz American Mustard

Raising a glass for a very special cause

The Nags Head in Billericay holds various events to raise money for all kinds of charities but recently they have been supporting a very special cause - Oscar’s Journey.

AST Saturday the pub held a Charity Golf Day and raised over £3,000, this weekend a Casino Night black tie event is taking place, with further events planned for later this year. Lucy, who works at The Nags will also be running the Paris Marathon next April to raise money for Oscar’s Journey. As landlady Linda Webber said: “Oscar’s Journey is quite special to me. Oscar’s parents are a lovely local family who come in the pub and I’ve got to know them well.” Oscar’s Journey came about because of a truly heartbreaking but inspirational story. Oscar Roger Griffiths was born on October 11, 2013. Due to complications during birth, the little boy suffered severe lack of oxygen to the brain and required resuscitation following an emergency Caesarian. He was placed on life support for the first five days of his life and transferred to a specialist neo-natal unit, who provided cooling treatment for 72 hours to limit the extent of his brain damage.

Nothing is ever easy for Oscar. The extent of his brain damage literally affects all aspects of his life, it was two weeks before he first opened his eyes. He is unable to swallow, he regularly chokes, he has moderate hearing loss and cannot control movement in his limbs. Oscar’s official diagnosis is severe quadriplegic cerebral palsy. He stayed in hospital for the first nine weeks of his life whilst his parents Paul and Caroline were trained on how to look after his complex needs and necessary medical equipment was delivered home. They also had to allow to carers to be arranged to look after Oscar through the night at their home. Since coming home, Oscar has continued to amaze everyone, he is still unable to sit unaided, swallow or use his limbs but he has a strong mind and his is clearn on what he does and doesn’t enjoy. But the sad truth is the NHS resources are limited and their main course of support for Oscar is physiotherapy and symptom management. Paul and Caroline have undertaken research to look at alternative but effective methods to

help actually improve Oscar’s quality of life but these therapies aren’t cheap. In August 2014 they started The Scotson Technique, which involves Paul and Caroline applying light pressure on the

muscles which aid Oscar’s breathing and posture which in turn will help stimulate and strengthen his respiratory system which was greatly affected during his birth. Since beginning this treatment Oscar has been his most stable since birth, his breathing is stronger, he is more alert and his general health has greatly improved. Every day with Oscar is a blessing and his amazingly inspirational parents are determined to do their best to help him progress in life. Any funds raised will help them provide the treatment Oscar needs to achieve this. The Casino Night in aid of Oscar’s Journey takes place Saturday June 13, 2015 at 8pm. Power up, consumption down G ERMAN maker BMW has launched its latest incarnation of the 1-Series, the starter car for many BMW aspirants to the famous marque. It has seen a variety of subtle changes and refinements or improvements since the first launch 11 years ago and now there are more. They can be summed up in two ways: better performance with reduced fuel consumption and, particularly more recently, a massive advance in technological applications. The latest 1-Series has arrived with a raft of ‘connectivity’ as BMW calls it. If you really must ensure you are available to the world outside your car as you drive along, or want to connect to it at whatever mph is on the clock, then even the 1-Series lets you do just that. On the financial side, there are sub-divisions. These are something you have to study carefully to understand what you are paying for. Take, for example, two versions of the new diesel-engined cars that I have tried. The cheaper of the two was the 116d ED Plus. Among its optional extras was Media package - BMW Professional, which included: Navigation system - BMW Professional Multimedia, BMW Online Services,Real Time Traffic Information, Information Plus,

The other car was the 125d M Sport; similarly, amongst its optional extras was ‘Media package - BMW Professional’ which included exactly the same kit, but this time the cost was quoted as £1,890. The reason behind this, explains BMW, is that the 116d ED Plus comes with navigation as standard as it is aimed at corporate users, hence why there is a reduced price. Most cars in their range are particularly good to drive, even if they are fitted with the less powerful engines. It was interesting, then, to have a go in the new 1.5-litre 3-cylinder diesel. This has an emission rating of a mere 89 g/km and an official combined fuel consumption figure of 83.1 mpg. How would it fare on the NVT scale? Noise, vibration and harshness are aspects of car design that are now as important as any other. Four-cylinder engines, even diesels, are now so smooth, quiet and refined that they are often indistinguishable from petrol engines. Three-cylinder engines are getting better, but most drivers used

to smooth fours can tell the difference. It’s a matter of vibration. The new BMW version is as quiet and refined as a four, but the vibration has not been completely eliminated. Does it matter? Maybe not, but I’d suggest that engineers can still improve on the current 3-cylinder scene. Having said that, fuel consumption from 3-cylinder engines is getting better. The engines have always been willing revvers, but

putting your foot down has meant some disappointing consumption figures in real life (as opposed to those unreal ‘official’ figures). In the case of my test drive, a 55-mile mainly cross-country route with some testing hills thrown in, my car’s trip computer showed a figure of 66.9 mpg. The 116 wasn’t exactly sluggish (0-62 mph in 10.4 seconds) and in fact could put on a reasonable spurt of acceleration when required. The other 1-series tried out, over a very similar route, was a 125d. BMW tells me it’s a car that’s often overlooked, so I would suggest that could be a mistake. It’s a cracker. Yes, it costs a basic £29,800 on-the-road, with its mineral grey paint and oyster/black dakota leather (the 116d ED Plus is £23,480 in mineral white and full black dakota leather), but it’s much more what we expect from a BMW. OK, you could spend not a

lot more on the very sharp new M135, but it makes more sense as an all-rounder. The ride was excellent over some bumpy and undulating roads, as was the handling... very reassuring. The rather fat leather-bound M Sport steering wheel felt better than the basic leather offering in the other car. The brakes were outstanding I am continually amazed at how a hefty lump of high-speed motor car can be made to stop so smoothly and effortlessly and in such a short distance. The Highway Code needs to be completely overhauled in this regard. This car accelerates to 62 mph in just 6.3 seconds. Emissions are 121 g/km, equating to annual road tax of £95... pity the g/km were not just one less because that would be a yearly save of £65. The car’s trip recorder showed an average of 47 mpg on the test route. In all, the new 1-Series

offers five new diesel engines and a further improvement in economy and emission ratings also for its petrol engines. Prices have risen a bit, but BMW says that the independently-measured £500 value added by the latest equipment is greater than the actual price-rise. Dimensions remain the same, as is the basic bodywork, but new front and rear lamp treatments give the car a sharper look. On the inside, BMW has re-designed the console, which of course they had to do, even if the previous look was just fine. As ever, it’s a good idea to give yourself plenty of bedside reading when you buy this car – there’s a heck of a lot to learn about its technology. And, talking of buying, 75% of customers (of whom more than a third will be women) are buying their BMWs through finance deals. Prices start at £20,245 for the 3-door 118i.

DRIVER TRAINING

Check your licence before you hitch up

CHANGE to driving licence categories years ago could mean some drivers who passed their driving test could be driving illegally if they intend to tow a large caravan, horsebox or trailer and car combination. From January 1, 1997 the Category B on your licence had a limitation that the combined maximum weight of both car and trailer must not exceed 3,500kg. Above that, you must by law have the B+E Category, which means taking a new driving test towing a trailer. My 32-year-old son, Oliver, fell foul of this regulation. An avid caravanner (like his father and father-in-law), the demands of a growing family meant a change to a larger, heavier caravan to accommodate his growing brood.

A heavier caravan required a bigger car to safely tow it, so along with the purchase of the six-berth Bailey Pageant Bretagne, was soon followed by a Volvo XC90, which with their combined weight put him over the 3,500kg weight limit his licence allowed. Oliver turned to RSM Commercial Driver Training, based in Basildon, who offer a whole range of one-to-one HGV, bus, paramedic and trailer towing courses from their base in Courtauld Road on the Burnt Mills Industrial Estate in Basildon. Although he had previously towed a smaller car and caravan for some years, he still needed 12 hours of training spread over two days to reach the required level of expertise to satisfy his instructor that he was ready for the test. Novices can expect this to increase to 20 hours of tuition to cover all aspects of trailer towing and the RSM driving instructor will ensure that you are competent, confident and safe to drive on the open road unsupervised.

Oliver Manning with his all important B+E certificate The B+E test itself is carried out an Light Goods Vehicle (LGV) test centre and requires the student to drive to very high standard with emphasis on observation, use of mirrors, road positioning and consideration for other road users. It additionally involves safety checks of car and trailer, reversing and braking exercises and trailer coupling and uncoupling plus an hour-long road route with a number of set exercises. Oliver found the whole experience quite intense, saying: “The training sessions were quite demanding in their concentration levels, but all the time I was learning new skills and was glad when my instructor said I was ready to take the test. “The test started with safety checks, then reversing around an S-shaped course and parking

in a coned area before heading out on to the open road for the hour driving test. “I don’t think I have ever been more focussed on the road before as, just like the standard driving test I took when I was 17, you are only allowed a certain number of minus points. “You can even pick one up for not checking in your mirrors every time you change gear. “Thankfully I passed with only four errors and the whole experience has taught me a lot about trailer towing and definitely makes me a more accomplished and safer caravan tower.’’ “At least now I can legally tow the caravan for a much needed holiday and although the cost of the course is around £800, without the B+E category on my licence the thousands of pounds my wife and I have invested in our caravan and car would be wasted.’’

Brisland century wins it

T WAS another fairly positive week for results. The firsts and seconds were strongly challenged but came out on top and a Henry Brisland century gained a comfortable win for the thirds. There were also wins for the Sunday firsts and under-16s but defeats for the fourth and fifth teams. For the first team it was a very hard fought and occasionally unpleasant match. Buckhurst Hill’s lower order salvaged their innings to total 171 with Anthony Hill taking five wickets. Stuart Everard was the hero again in the second team with an outstanding spell of seven for 65. Woodford Wells had been strongly positioned but Everard and Drain combined superbly to restrict them to 207. Henry Brisland showed his stroke-making ability with 123 in a seven-wicket win for the third team.

There were three wickets apiece for Stephen Drain and Keith Goodman. Brisland (123) hit the bowling to all parts and with David Thrift (70) playing a supporting role, they made light work of the target. David Goddard and Abi Kumar combined in a crucial partnership for the fourth team. Although they would lose the game, that pair at least gained six batting points with Goddard contributing an undefeated 50. With only 10 men and some inexperienced cricketers, the fifths did well to restrict Leigh to 199 for nine. There were four wickets for 13-year-old Matt Cole and three for Alex Bailey. Early progress was reasonable with Barry Clayden (42) top scoring but the innings collapsed horribly at the end and they were all out for 129. The Sunday first team achieved their first win of the season. Neither side played

particularly well but Liam Keaney turned in an excellent display with two wickets and a half century. Four wickets from Tom Halsey had helped to dismiss the visitors for 153. The chase was far from textbook but Steve Pleasant and Anthony Hill knocked off the last 24 runs. Harry Green played a captain’s innings for the under-16s as they won at Brentwood. A good team bowling performance with important wickets from Alex Critchell (2-34) and very tidy spells from Tom Arnold (116) and Shiraz Shahid (3-13) restricted Brentwood to 164 for eight from 40 overs. Jay Smith (45) provided solidity at the top of the order and he and Green had to steady things after three wickets fell for 17. Matt Cook and Green shared the match winning partnership putting on 35 to finish unbeaten on 16 and 55 respectively.

Essex drivers ready for Le Mans race TWO Essex racing drivers will be taking part this weekend’s most challenging and gruelling motor racing event, the Le Mans 24 hours. Simon Dolan, who owns Jota Sport based in Kent, was born in Chelmsford and the 46-yearold self-made millionaire and business entrepreneur will be hoping to repeat the success of last year when the Jota car won the LMP2 (Le Mans Prototype) class and came home fifth overall. Now running a Gibson 0155 custom-built race car, he will share the driving stints with Oliver Turvey, 28, who raced with the winning team last year and 20-year-old New Zealand driver Mitch Evans who joins the squad for his first crack at Le Mans. Maldon’s Stuart Hall joins the Essex contingent racing a factory-backed Aston Martin Vantage in the LM GTE Am category for production-based vehicles including Ferrari and Porsche. Thirty year old Hall has raced at Le Mans five times

eight mile French track in a Porsche 919 Hybrid and is joined by a whole bevy of former Formula One racing drivers. Mark Webber heads the list, also driving for Porsche, and others include Nicolas Prost, Nick Heidfield, Sebastien Buemi, Karun Chandhok, Alexander Wurz, Jan Magnussen and Giancarlo Fisichella. Grey’s Anatomy TV star Patrick Dempsey returns with his Dempsey Porsche racing team. The race starts at 2pm (UK time) this Saturday. CM

CHELMSFORD continued their excellent form with a four-wicket win against Buckhurst Hill. After Buckhurst Hill won the toss and elected to bat on what looked like an excellent pitch, this looked to be a mistake as excellent opening spells from Sam Cook (3-36) and Anthony Hill reduced the visitors to 20 for four. After looking shaky earlier on, Maskell (47) chose to counterattack and did so with some success, showing that the pitch was a very good batting surface. After he was caught on the boundary off the bowling of Ben Clifford, Hill struck twice to leave the visitors in trouble with seven wickets down at lunch with the score still below 100. The loss of Ollie Devenish to injury while fielding in the over before lunch proved to be crucial, with Chelmsford toiling to remove the stubborn pair of Allen (44) and Bhome (38). James Clifford (1-39) was rewarded for his hard work with the wicket of Bhome, before Hill returned to take the final two wickets and achieve his first fivewicket haul (5-34). immediately set about taking the attack to the bowling, At 70 for one Chelmsford appeared in full control, but the loss of Beard (38) instigated a mini-collapse to 84 for five. Although James Clifford fell with 20 more required for victory, this brought his brother Ben to the crease who provided his usual combination of effective stroke play with the occasional rush of blood to the head. Prowting showed his class and mental strength to finish unbeaten on 37.

SUNNY day, heavy weather; Chelmsford nearly botched a match that always seemed to be going their way. The visitors lost an early wicket but Soilleux was given a couple of early lives and had some good fortune to lay a decent platform. Liam Keaney (219) took out two of his partners during a good spell but as the score ticked to 106 for three from 25 overs. Tom Halsey broke the fourth wicket partnership and in combination with James Clifford (2-10) worked through the rest of the batting. Chelmsford lost a wicket in the first over but Dan Hagen and

Keaney forged a partnership that put Chelmsford firmly on top. Hagen (26) was surprisingly dismissed and two wickets fell in successive overs to make it 101 for four. Keaney looked to have things under control but was well caught for 59 and an unnecessary trumpet charge brought about a sixth wicket at 130. Steve Pleasant (21) and Hill played sensibly and were able to see the game through to a successful conclusion. 2ND TEAM Woodford Wells 207 all out Chelmsford 208-4

THE seconds continued to match their first team compatriots by maintaining their own perfect winning start to the season (5 from 5). Batting first, Woodford Wells stumbled early on, losing two wickets to Mark Drain before reaching 20, and, despite losing Phillips (31) with the score on 79, reached the midinnings drink break on 121 for three. With two batsmen set, 26 overs left and the pitch playing well, both sides were sensing that a first innings total might be around 250. Stuart Everard removed opener Sharp for 77, caught at point, and quickly picked up another to make it 132 for five. The scoring rate was increasingly

strangled by some disciplined bowling supported by a tigerish fielding performance from Chelmsford. With eight overs left and the home side on 185 for five, Woodford Wells desperately attempted to accelerate. Corbyn (41) and Jolly were well set but both fell to the combination of Everard and Bradley Green. The innings subsided, the last five wickets falling for 22 to finish somewhat short on 207 all out. For the second week running Chelmsford caught everything, (seven catches), with keeper Bradley Green to the fore with two stumpings and two catches. Leg spinner Everard was again amongst the wickets reaping seven for 65 in an 18 over unchanged spell, well supported by Drain (3-51). With plenty of overs available, Chelmsford responded steadily, scoring at four an over, reaching 92 before losing their first wicket, that of Rob Catchpole for 35. His opening partner, Jack Moss, was out shortly afterwards for a solid 54. Paul Jones and Bradley Green (24) moved the score to 151 for three leaving 57 required from 15 overs. A wicket fell quickly after this, bringing Lee Cranmer to the crease with Jones who was playing the anchor role. This pair smoothly saw Chelmsford to victory with three overs in hand.
