NEWS CHILDCARE

NEWS

Free childcare hours to double in brief

R

ECORD figures show more than 100,000 three and four year-olds in the East of England are benefitting from free childcare with almost universal take-up across the region. Recent statistics released show an unprecedented demand for childcare places in the East of England, thanks to the Government’s offer of 15 free hours per week. There is 99% take up from four year-olds and 96% take up from three year-olds. The figures mean that more than 147,000 three and four year-olds currently receive funded early education. Good news for many then, as the number of free hours is soon to rise to 30 hours for working parents worth an estimated £5,000 per annum and 1,140 free hours of childcare per child, per year. The extra hours will mean there is now more support than ever before to help with the costs of childcare building on the steps already taken by the government to help families across the country. Childcare providers have risen to the increased demand and today’s statistics show that for the first time more than 107,000 three and four year-olds in the East of England get their funded hours in settings rated good or outstanding by Ofsted. Childcare Minister, Sam Gyimah said: “It’s fantastic that not only are so many parents accessing free childcare but more places are in top quality settings.” “I’m delighted that we are extending this popular offer and doubling the number of free hours of high quality childcare to working parents. “No parent should be denied the childcare option that works best for their family, but costs have historically been a burden on family finances that prevented

them from working if they wanted to. We are removing these barriers and giving parents the chance to return to work.” The Childcare Bill, introduced to Parliament in June will double free childcare available for up to 600,000 families nationally. The Government has also committed to increase the average funding rate provided. A Department for Education review has already begun, overseen by the Childcare Minister. A new Government taskforce, headed by Minister of State for Employment Priti Patel, will also work to drive forward the plans to benefit working families. The roll out for the 30 hours free childcare will begin from 2016 – a year earlier than planned. For more details visit: www.gov.uk.

Vegan role model for PETA

HAT does Essex resident Anna Solaiman have in common with Ellie Goulding, Natalie Portman and Jessica Chastain? They are all sizzling, sexy vegans! Anna, 29 from Ilford, beat other entrants to become one of PETA’s (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals) four female finalists in their Sexiest Vegan in the UK and Ireland competition for 2015. Anna describes herself as a ‘crazy animal lover, dancer, runner and laugher.’ Originally from Bangladesh she loves tempting her friends with vegan Bengali cuisine. Working as a make-up artist, Anna meets lots of different people and clients every day. “This is

always the perfect opportunity to talk and spread awareness about animal testing and animal ingredients in products they may be using, as not everyone realises how much animal abuse there is in

the beauty industry alone,” she says. “Being compassionate is not only attractive but also good for

our health, as these contestants demonstrate,” says PETA’s Yvonne Taylor. “Everyone who entered this contest is already a winner because they’re saving animals’ lives and taking care of their own health.” Voting on the finalists will run until July 17. Winners will be chosen by PETA based on several factors including your vote count, and will be announced on July 20, 2015. For more information and to vote visit: www/ peta.org.uk.

NEWS FESTIVAL REVIEW

The best ‘big day’ out for pre-schoolers

Hilary Collins takes her little 3-footer to a festival with a difference at Hylands Park

T

ICKETS for this year’s awardwinning 3foot People Festival, Hylands Park, Chelmsford (30 June – 2 July) sold out in just 48 hours so we were delighted to get our hands on a pair of tickets to experience the delights at first hand. The festival is only open to under-fives along with their parents and carers, so I was accompanied by my three-year old son Harlyn. As soon as we entered the site Harlyn ran to Horse World where he could play amongst a herd of rocking horses. He wasn’t the only one, many other 3footers were happy to do the same, and he soon made friends with other little ones as they very politely shared the toys. Next up was Mad Science and Harlyn was literally blown away with their demonstration on how air works. He was fascinated to watch the bubbles that

didn’t burst land on his hand, and was captivated by the hurricane in a bottle that worked just the same as when he pulls the plug out of his bath. The icing on the cake though, was watching the ‘Mad Scientists’ create clouds, now that’s not something 3footers or 6footers see everyday! How many times have we all said: “they’re not interested in the toy, they just want to play with the box!” Well at the 3ft People Festival we found Cardboard Box World where children’s dreams became a reality. We spent a long time in here as Harlyn and his newly made friends jumped, tumbled and created buses, castles, pirate ships and even a shed – who knew recycling could be so much fun! Hylands Park is a stunning location and a beautiful place for a festival, and it was lovely to

A weekend of wonders for Harlyn, right and friend Barnaby sit under the trees and admire the tented village of play. Harlyn was soon off again exploring a new area full of pirates and hidden treasures with painted logs to jump from one place to another – “avoid the crocodiles

NEWS GREEN ENERGY

Controversy Blowin’ at Turncole Wind Farm

L

ITTLE splits public opinion like a wind farm. While most of us appreciate the need to reduce emissions of greenhouse gases, how to achieve that goal whilst preserving our countryside is a divisive issue. Conservative MP for Brentwood and Ongar, Eric Pickles’ decision to greenlight the construction of seven new wind turbines at Turncole Farm wasn’t received well by residents of Southminster. It’s time to take a no nonsense look at the costs and the benefits of wind farms so we can make an informed decision about how best to meet our energy needs. Wind farms are the leading generator of renewable energy in the UK, responsible for 25% of the electricity provided by renewables. That’s enough to save six million tonnes of C02 from entering the atmosphere, which is equivalent to the C02 emissions of half a million homes. Wind farms can help us meet our legally binding commitment to an 80%

reduction in greenhouse gas emissions, a target established by the Royal Commission on Environmental Pollution. But are they good value for money? Generating electricity from onshore wind turbines costs around 7 - 9p/kWh, making them one the cheapest sources of energy according to EU analysis. Can wind farms ever produce enough energy? Wind turbines work by harnessing the energy of moving air to generate electricity. This means that they generate power only when the wind is blowing, so the supply is intermittent. An intermittent power supply requires a reliable backup, such as that provided by fossil fuels or nuclear energy. Developments in green technology, such as energy storage, linked grids and demand management, are potential

Wind Farms are a familiar sight

solutions to wind’s intermittency, but the technology isn’t quite there yet. Scientists currently argue that wind farms should be part of our energy mix, but we still need other forms of energy too, including solar panels, nuclear and fossil fuels. Would you rather live next to a wind farm or a conventional power station? There’s no disguising the visual impact of wind farms. Wind turbines need large blades to effectively harness energy, inevitably taking up a lot of space. It can be heartbreaking for longstanding residents to find their favourite views spoiled by new constructs. In fairness, it should be remembered that gas-fired plants and nuclear power stations are at least as ugly

as wind turbines, though they can sometimes be located more discretely. The reality is that unless we are prepared to use substantially less energy, more power needs to be generated, and sometimes generators will be built nearby. One expensive solution is to move wind farms offshore, but as those living in Clacton-on-Sea already know, this doesn’t completely remove wind turbines from eyesight. To ensure that construction has minimal impact on local wildlife and heritage, each potential wind farm must pass an Environmental Impact Assessment. These tests are stringent, and just three onshore wind farms have been approved in the last two years, including the Turncole site. What’s next for wind energy? The new government has pledged to “halt” the development of onshore wind farms by giving local people the final say on wind farm applications. Putting power back into local hands is long overdue, but I hope that locals are given the same powers when other energy companies come knocking, especially after the discovery of shale gas underneath Uttlesford and Braintree. Choosing between unspoilt countryside and wind turbines is one thing, but choosing between living next to a wind turbine or another type of power plant is a different decision altogether. About the author: Clive Rollison is passionate about protecting our planet through renewable energy technology. His business, Complete Renewables, is a leading installer of solar panels in Essex.. www.completerenewables.co.uk.

TOP BBQ’ing TIPS

Tgfs gsf hgsfgfsghs hgfsghshg

1. Marinate, marinate, marinate! Marinating your meat is the key to boosting its flavour and making sure it is at its succulent best! It is best to keep the meat in its marinade for at least 12 hours so consider preparing it the night before. 2. Lose fridge chill Always give enough time out of the fridge, at least 20 minutes, for raw barbecue dishes to lose their chill and to be approaching room temperature. If the meat, chicken, fish or vegetable is too cold in the centre, the outside may well burn before the inside is cooked. 3. Patience is a virtue You need to wait until your BBQ is the perfect temperature before starting to cook on it. The flames need to have died down, and the coals need to be white hot. 4. Rest the meat Resting meats after barbecuing is an essential part of the barbecuing process. Leaving it to rest for a few minutes allows the meat to reabsorb the juices. Rest the meat on a warmed tray on the top rack or away from the direct heat covered with perforated foil.

Neil, a lifelong wine enthusiast, is qualified with a Wine and Spirit Education Trust (WSET) Level 4 Diploma – the highest level of wine qualification awarded by the worlds foremost wine education body. He has already built a loyal following in the region from hosting a wide range of successful private and corporate wine events - from sophisticated hen nights to company teambuilding sessions, gaining a reputation for bringing a relaxed, informative style of delivery to each occasion. Wanting to share his passion for wine, and with a love of teaching, Neil has also become one of only 500 Approved Programme Providers worldwide, qualified to deliver professional-standard WSET courses to both consumers and the wine trade. enthusiasts alike. Chris Powell, the founder and owner, set up the first school in Newcastle in 2000. It’s an exciting, renowned brand throughout the UK with a good structure and a strong ethos of championing local merchants. The diverse range of courses and tastings really appealed to me, and it will be hugely beneficial to be part of a group of wine school owners, all supporting each other and sharing ideas.” Essex Wine school is offering tastings at all levels from introductory evening sessions to eight-week courses and

Neil’s top 10 wine tips

1. D rink what you like, not what someone says you should like. 2. Always taste the wine in a restaurant, if only to check the temperature is correct. 3. Swirl the wine in the glass to release the aroma, then have a good sniff. It can really help you to better appreciate the wine. 4. Try new grape varieties, and you may be pleasantly surprised. 5. Don’t get too hung up on food and wine pairing, just remember the most important rule – one should not overpower the other – they need to work together. 6. Temperature is really important. Too much white wine is served too cold. 8-10 degrees is ideal. If it is too cold the flavour can be lost. 7. Store your wine correctly, never near a radiator or even in the kitchen, as the heat can spoil a wine. The best thing is to buy an old fridge and keep the wine

in it, in the garage. Do not turn the fridge on - it has in built insulation that will protect the wine from swings in temperature. 8. Most wines nowadays are made to be drunk young, within a couple of years from release, so a screwcap is nothing to be worried about. 9. If you are an ABC (Anything But Chardonnay) try them again. They have changed so much and many are absolutely delicious. 10. Come on one of our courses to taste some different varieties, to learn how to taste like a professional, to learn how to appreciate your wines and to gain a better understanding of food and wine pairing.

Cruise the Mediterranean to sample the best food and wine, says Mike Pickup

The Mediterranean diet has had a lot of positive press recently so we were keen to do more research on our recent cruise on Island Princess. Perversely the ship had ballooned from 987 cabins to 1107 during a dry dock refit.

W

E had a very early flight from Heathrow to join the ship in Athens on its first outing since the refit. Fortunately we had booked a meet and greet parking service through Holiday Extras so our journey to Terminal 5 was effortless despite the early departure. Island Princess is a mid-sized ship, holding just over 2,000 passengers on double occupancy, although there are plenty of cabins with third and fourth beds for families. She has all the usual cruise ship facilities such as a West End-style theatre, gym, spa, duty free shops, bars, lounges and a choice of eateries. A more unusual feature is ‘Movies under the Stars’ where guests can relax on sun loungers after dark, watch a movie, help themselves to popcorn and, should it get a little chilly, snuggle under cosy tartan blankets. Our first day on board was a sea day and an opportunity to relax in the Sanctuary, another Princess speciality. This exclusive section

Island Princess of one of the upper decks focuses on wellbeing. Offering comfortable loungers, cabanas, spa treatment rooms, relaxing sounds, tasty smoothies and menus, guests can book this area for $20 a half day. After an early start the previous morning we were happy to make the most of the tranquil setting. Italy was the main focus of our

trip with ports of call covering Naples, Livorno (Pisa and Florence) and Civitavecchia (Rome). Gragnano, a town just outside Naples, is considered the home of pasta and manufactures around 10% of all that is consumed in Italy. We also had ample opportunity to visit dairies and vineyards to see how local cheeses and wines were made, and to savour the fresh produce – delicious, and tasting so much better when cooked locally and washed down with regional wines under a Mediterranean sky. Island Princess added to the experience with themed food nights in the main restaurant. One evening we dined in Sabatini’s, the ship’s

After an amuse bouche I chose a salad of marinated shrimp, shaved fennel and white beans with white truffle oil, then spaghetti with langostino, diver scallops, tiger shrimp, vongole and black mussels in cherry tomato sauce. For mains I picked baked striped bass in zucchini crust over tomato-orange melt with toasted polenta, followed by Tiramisu. Oh dear, more time needed in the gym! where the Mediterranean theme continued. The countryside is dotted with wine domaines, all strictly controlled under the DOC scheme, but we went one better and visited the Chateau Vannieres where grapes for the famous Bandol wines are grown. We had to sample the range of white, rose and red wines of course! On our way back to the ship we visited Castellet, one of the many hilltop villages that, having been deserted for many years, are now being re-populated. They provide peaceful village atmospheres and stunning vistas from their lofty viewpoints. Our final port of call was Barcelona, the home of Freixenet and the world’s largest producer of ’bubbly’; it seemed a shame not to drop by. After a brief introduction we headed down flights of stairs to the old cellars, full of dusty bottles of wine which, we were told, were too old to drink. Still, I wouldn’t have minded trying. Then we were off to the new cellars, so vast that we had to take a little train to get us there and show us round. After all this exertion we were glad to sample a generous glass of their famous Cordon Negro before heading to the airport and home, a great end to a memorable trip.

Learn to… play football the By FA Coach Robin Lynn

WITH summer fast approaching, football clubs are already starting to plan for the new season ahead, however, the number participating in football is decreasing yearly, and this is a cause of concern for The FA Chairman Greg Dyke. He recently stated: “It is evident that for this generation of young

footballers to make the grade is harder than ever.” This makes it even more important to ensure that right techniques are in place early, so that the player has a better chance of fulfilling their dreams! There’s no question that the hunger and

desire in young people to play football still remains, but a change that still eludes youth levels within the game is the attention to detail and FUN when it comes to implementing the correct skills and techniques (which also includes the mental approach) required for our youth players to advance. Often these aspects are either forgotten, or cannot be focused on fully during the limited time available for team training. Another problem is how a coach can focus on each of their players particular development needs. Changes have already begun in England to develop these technical skills for those 14 years of age and upwards, but by this age it is

right way! equally as important in a child’s development in order to become the very best they can be. A child may very well be the next Rooney or Beckham, but the real question is, do they have the correct technical, skilful and mental approach fully mastered? The most important part is to ensure that any techniques are put in place correctly at the earliest opportunity. Otherwise, bad habits set in and once this happens it’s harder to correct. This is the difference between your child being an average-to-good player or a good-to-GREAT player! Here’s an example of how coaching is key:

CASE STUDY 1: Maizi, a 13 year old female Essex County player, with great passing and shooting skills but slow reaction times, causing her to be in the wrong positions during game play. CHALLENGES & OBJECTIVES:

Improve her reaction times by working on her short and sharp, twisting and turning movements while in confined spaces. OUTCOME: After a handful of 1-2-1 sessions, a noticeable improvement was shown in not only her

CASE STUDY 2: Matthew, a 6 year old in his early stages of development, with enthusiasm in abundance and energy to burn. His difficulties lie in mastering the correct technique in passing and shooting, causing his general play to be more ‘kick and hope’ rather than kicking with an aim to reach intended targets. CHALLENGES & OBJECTIVES: Introducing the correct techniques for both passing and shooting by implementing various fun based games, and scoring points for correct body and foot shape.

OUTCOME: After a month of 1-2-1 sessions, a more accurate pass and shot was established, along with an increased amount of power being developed. He is now able to utilise these skills when he plays with his new local team. Coaches Comments: Matthew worked hard and listened carefully, which allowed me to apply new skill based techniques to his gameplay. “Onwards and upwards Matthew!” Player Comments: “I love football and Coach Robin always makes it fun”.

Business

Gary Cook Manager at Hylands Estate in Chelmsford, Essex, looks at how holding a business meeting in a scenic setting rather than stuffy office can do wonders for your creative thinking!

M

OST business professionals have either heard of or perhaps even used the phrase ‘let’s walk and talk’. While this has been consigned by many to the cupboard marked ‘Americanisms’ alongside phrases such as ‘Let’s run that idea up the flagpole’, new evidence has recently emerged that suggests that walking and talking may actually have significant merit. I recently read an article in an American business journal about the social media company, LinkedIn, which encourages its employees to conduct walking meetings. Apparently there is a bike path near the company’s Mountain View headquarters in California which takes about 20-25 minutes to complete on foot – perfect for a half-hour one-to-one with a colleague. According to the article, the practice of walking and talking at LinkedIn was born from necessity rather than creativity. The company was outgrowing its business premises due to rapid expansion so meeting rooms had become very hard to book.”

Good health

37 WEEKEND

As well as the obvious physical benefits of exercise, walking promotes better brain function. Being healthy and having a clear state of mind helps you make choices that are reasonable and well thought-out. In taking its meetings outside, LinkedIn had inadvertently stumbled across an activity that is not only beneficial

46 SPORT

Thinking on your feet

to the health of its employees but to the health of the business as a whole. A study into the effect of exercise on brain function that was carried out by the University of British Columbia found that regular aerobic exercise appears to boost the size of the hippocampus – the area of the brain involved in verbal memory and learning. Exercise also leads to improved mood and sleep and reduced stress and anxiety. Problems in any of these areas can impair cognitive function. These findings are further

supported by research conducted by Marily Oppezzo, who researched walking and creativity along with her professor Daniel Schwartz, when she was a doctoral student at Stanford’s Graduate School of Education. To measure the effect of walking on creativity, Schwartz and Oppezzo asked test subjects to walk and sit while tasked with finding alternative uses for everyday items like tyres or buttons. They found that people who walked were able to come up with more unique ideas, both while they were walking and immediately afterward. Walking and talking also removes physical barriers such as desks and boardroom tables to create a less formal environment, which facilitates more relaxed, open conversation. It also removes other office-based distractions such as phones, emails and interruptions from colleagues. However compelling this research is, it does not suggest that boardrooms are destined to become vacant spaces. While walking meetings help promote creative thinking, the researchers found that sitting is the better option when you have to solve a problem for which there is only

one right answer. Schwartz and Oppezzo asked test subjects to come up with a single word that combines with the words “cottage, Swiss, and cake.” The sitters were better able to figure out the answer: cheese. Similarly for formal interviews or potentially difficult conversations, such as staff performance reviews, sitting is a far more appropriate option. Here the formality of the setting and eye contact is hugely beneficial.

How much is enough?

The study carried out at the University of British Columbia suggests that a brisk one hour walk twice a week is enough – that’s just 120 minutes of moderate intensity exercise in seven days. If you adopt the walking meeting philosophy you could easily achieve this target within office hours – it equates to a just 24 minutes a day during a five day working week. As well as LinkedIn, other high profile Americans who are fans of walking meetings are Barack Obama, Facebook Chief Mark

Zuckerberg and Twitter co-founder, Jack Dorsey. In fact, Facebook has just installed a half-mile loop on the roof of its new headquarters in California for that very purpose. At Hylands Estate, a popular meeting and conference venue, we have a totally natural resource at our disposal in the shape of 500 acres of parkland. Every year we host hundreds of business events, including meetings, conferences and seminars within our mansion building and pavilion but it’s still the minority rather than the majority of business clients whom make use of the surrounding gardens, lake and woodland. The American research really made me think about how our clients could make far better use of our wonderful outdoor space, either for break-out sessions to assist with problem solving, relaxed one-to-ones or during seminars and conferences where creative thinking would be beneficial. With many people citing work as a reason for not getting enough exercise, incorporating it into your working week seems like a great solution. Walking meetings will also help desk workers achieve the frequent breaks that are recommended by the health and safety executive. Interestingly, in LinkedIn’s case, despite having now expanded into larger business premises, its employees are still quite literally choosing to think on their feet and regularly take to the bike path in the Californian hills. While we aren’t able to guarantee the same levels of sunshine as California, we are able to provide hundreds of acres of the best of what England has to offer for relaxed, informal business meetings. We’re also happy to provide an umbrella or two. For more details on how to hold your business meeting at Hylands Estate, visit www. chelmsfordcityvenues.co.uk/ hylands-estate

Here’s to another 150 years of

Alice in Wonderland! Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland is 150 years old this year. Chicken and Frog Bookshop’s Natasha Radford celebrates the popular children’s tale and some new titles that enthusiasts of Alice and her adventures will adore!

A

UTHOR of Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland Charles Dodgson, better known as Lewis Carroll, was a natural storyteller who frequently invented new stories to amuse his friends. Inspired by real events and a real child, Alice Liddell, Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland was dreamt up on a lazy summer’s day in Oxford. The river outing with the Liddell family on 4 July 1862, from Folly Bridge to Godstow, was where it all began. Charles Dodgson travelled downriver with the Dean of Christ Church, Oxford and his family. Along the way he told the family a story about a bored little girl called Alice who went searching for an adventure. The family loved it and at the end of that day, the daughter, Alice Liddell, asked for the story to be written down. Charles Dodgson agreed and began writing the manuscript the very next day. It actually took him two and a half years to complete, but was well worth the wait. To celebrate its 150th anniversary, publishers have been busily re-printing Alice in a whole range of styles to suit young and old. Here are just a few examples of re-vamped Alice: First up is The Complete Alice. This hardback edition of the original text with a foreword by Philip Pullman and Sir John Tenniel’s original illustrations, coloured by Harry G. This is a great edition for sharing at bedtime. Busy Alice in Wonderland is a perfect introduction for young children. LOTS of properties going under the hammer in Clive Emson’s July Auction Britain’s top land and property auctioneers forthcoming auction takes place on July 22. LOT 1

LOT 2

LAND NEXT TO FARM UP FOR AUCTION A freehold parcel of land at South Ockendon is going up for auction with a guide price of £15,000£20,000. The 0.04 hectare (0.09 acre) plot adjoining Ponds Farm on Purfleet Road and close to the A13 is currently used as a storage yard. It is among the Essex and North and East London lots listed for sale by the regional land and property auctioneers Clive Emson this month (July). Paul Bridgeman, auctioneer and former president of the National Association of Auctioneers and Valuers, said: “This land is likely to interest anyone who can see the potential in possibly obtaining planning consent in the future. “Land is always popular at auction. These plots may be used for recreational and amenity purposes or the new owner may have an alternative use in mind.” Last month’s round of five Clive Emson auctions across southern England, of which the Channels Golf Club was one, raised £21m, with an 83% success rate. Paul added: “It was our best June auction series since the heady days of 2006 and comes on the back of political stability, record-low borrowing costs and an improving economy. “The shortage of new homes and the increased demand for rented property is fuelling demand - the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors predicts that average house prices will rise by 25% over the next five years.” The independent company holds eight rounds of auctions at five locations from Essex to Cornwall on consecutive days every six weeks, this time with a total of 145 lots. Starting at 11am, the fourth of Clive Emson’s regional Essex and North & East London auctions in 2015 takes place at the Channels Golf Club, Little Waltham, Chelmsford, on Wednesday, July 22.

Gardening

Colours

of Summer

Summer has finally arrived and the gardens are pretty as a picture, especially at Hyde Hall, says Christine Woodhouse

T

HIS time of year all the foliage and the flowers are well underway at RHS Hyde Hall and everything is fresh and lush. The roses are starting to have their first flush, the early summer perennials fill the borders with their blousy blooms and the hedges are looking shapely thanks to last year’s trimming. The Hilltop Garden lawn is also starting to look really good thanks to a combination of spring rain and hard work by the turf team. The visitors never fail to comment on its appearance. But don’t take our word for it, come and pay us a visit, take your shoes and socks off, and experience it for yourself! We’ve also been enjoying fresh tasty rhubarb from our vegetable plots. If you aren’t growing any this year, then put it on your list for next year as you can’t beat a good rhubarb crumble and custard!

Mowing weekly will ensure that the weeds don’t compete with the grass and don’t forget about trimming the edges, as this will set off your borders. Also, try and feed your lawn if rain is due as it will help wash the feed in and will stop you having to water it in by hand.

Essential garden jobs

• Finish cutting back the leaves of daffodils right down to the ground. Store bulbs in a dry shed or garage in paper bags or boxes until October. • Continue to tie up summer flowering clematis as they are growing fast and can easily fall down so be vigilant! • Continue to spray your roses for black spot every 4-6 weeks to help keep the fungus at bay and your roses look their best for the whole year. She said “I find it very rewarding working at the garden and enjoy teaching the trainees.” When not at work she can be found in her own garden which she describes as small, shady and challenging.

Clean living!

Everyone’s talking about clean eating. So what is it all about? HELEN BARNESS gives us the lowdown

L

ET’S take a look because it might be that you are not really eating as clean as you think and that’s what’s stopping you change your body shape or lose weight or improve your fitness.

Do you eat clean? Do you cook from scratch? Do you eat vegetables? Clean eating is cooking/eating/ using food that is not processed, so man has not been tampering with it and adding in all sorts of other ingredients. It is often described as whole food. To eat clean you would be looking

to eliminate as much sugar as possible from your diet and this may well include reducing how much fruit you eat too if you are eating too much of it. An example of a clean eating day? Breakfast:- omelette with spinach or any other green vegetable if you can like broccoli, kale and add in some other colours – red/orange/yellow peppers for example. Lunch:- Green salad with lean chicken or fish but you can have a sauce of some kind that is made from scratch like extra virgin olive

oil with balsamic vinegar. Dinner:- Stir fries are great with loads of vegetables and then you can add in whatever meat or fish you like. There are many ways of doing healthier dinners that can still be appetising, you just have to be organised and have a good idea of what you are going to be eating. Why it is better to eat clean? Our bodies need a wide variety of nutrients – essential minerals, vitamins, fiber, fats, proteins, water to keep our body functioning and the better the quality of the food

we put into our body, the better our body will perform, look and feel. What can clean eating do for us? • help reduce cholesterol • keep your heart healthy • h elp you get off the sugar roller coaster and cravings so that we keep diabetes away • h elp your digestive system work more easily • helps you sleep better • l ess stress on the body through easier digestion • y ou will become clearer minded, the fog goes away! • helps with weight loss

• y ou will have more energy and look fab! So quite a few good reasons to clean up your diet. On a plate… with

Andrew Jones

executive chef, Chamberlain’s Leadenhall

T

HERE are always staple dishes on the menu at Chamberlain’s, including Dover sole and native Scottish lobsters (sent across daily from the company’s lobster tanks at Billingsgate), but a frequently changing menu of more up-to-

date dishes complements them. Executive chef, Essex-born Andrew Jones honed his culinary skills in some of the finest kitchens, including three Michelin-starred Michel Bras in Laguiole, France and joined Chamberlain’s in 2011 and has brought his extensive creative skills to bear on the restaurant, the catering business and the menus. He is now a director and shareholder in Chamberlain’s of London. To give us a flavour of just what Chamberlain’s is renowned for, Andrew has given us two fabulous fish dish recipes to try at home.

Chamberlain’s Leadenhall, 0207 648 8690/www.chamberlainsoflondon.com.

If you love fish, you’ll love Chamberlain’s located in the historic setting of Leadenhall Market in the City of London. The restaurant reflects the very best fish that is available from around British coastal waters.

Method 1. Preheat the oven to 200 °C 2. First put all of your chosen herbs into a bowl of cold water containing an ice cube. Keep the stalks to one side 3. Prepare your sole or ask your fish monger to do it for you (ask for the head, brown skin, roe blood line and fins to be removed and white skin scaled) 4. Brush with olive oil an ovenproof dish, just a little larger than the fish. Lay in the stalks from the herbs, shallot, thyme and fennel 5. Season the sole on both sides and place on top of the herbs with the white skin facing upwards 6. Mix the white wine and yoghurt then pour over the top of the sole and place in the oven for 12 minutes 7. Allow the sole to rest in the dish for 4 minutes when you remove from the oven. Then, with a large palate knife, carefully lift the sole out of the dish and place onto a warm serving dish 8. Pass the sauce that remains in the baking dish through a sieve into a clean saucepan. Bring to the boil and pour over the sole 9. Tea Smoked Mackerel with

apple & crispy shallot (serves 4) Ingredients: For mackerel 4 fillets of fresh mackerel pinboned (ask your fishmonger to do this) 2tsp dark soy sauce 1tsp runny honey 2 Darjeeling tea bags Salt Freshly ground pepper 40ml sunflower oil ½ lemon For apple purée 1 Bramley apple peeled and diced 2tsp caster sugar 1 clove For apple salad 100g finely diced green apple 30g peeled and finely diced celery 20g candied stem ginger finely diced 10g chopped chives 2tsp of stem ginger syrup For crispy shallots (you can cheat and buy these from supermarkets) 1 shallot sliced finely 1L vegetable oil to fry To finish Micro cress or small salad leaves or some shredded spring onions

Method 1. Mix soy and honey and coat mackerel with it, leave for at least 1 hour or, if you can, overnight. 2. Pat fish dry on kitchen paper and place on greaseproof paper, skin side up, in a steamer basket. 3. Put the loose tea leaves in the base of a dry pan and put steamer basket on top. Put on a high heat until you can see the smoke starting to come out. Remove from the heat and allow to stand for approximately 15 minutes. (tip: if using a bamboo steamer basket soak it in warm water for 30 mins before to prevent it burning.) 4. Transfer mackerel to a lightly oiled grill tray, skin side up (these steps can be done the day before and refrigerated until ready to serve.) 5. Put the Bramley apple, sugar and clove in a pan with a couple of tsp of water and cook on a medium heat until soft enough to blitz with a liquidiser or hand blender until smooth. Allow to cool and adjust the consistency with a little more water if it is too stiff. 6. Mix the diced green apple, celery, ginger, chives and ginger syrup together, season with salt and pepper to taste. 7. Heat the oil in a pan to 150 deg C. Add sliced shallots and cook until golden and crisp. Drain on kitchen paper to remove excess oil. 8. Mix sunflower oil with the juice of the ½ lemon and season to taste. TO FINISH, AND SERVE Place mackerel under a hot grill until skin is crisp and slightly charred, and flesh is cooked through. Put a spoonful of the purée on each plate and sit the mackerel on top. Spoon the apple salad down the back of the fish and then spoon over the lemon dressing. Dress the crisp shallot and salad leaves over the diced salad and serve.

Russell Grant’s Weekly Horoscopes ARIES March 21st - April 20th

Beware of being too impulsive or overly self-centred. Decisions that affect other members of your family or workplace team should be discussed. It may not be the best time to relocate or assign different roles to those involved. Let an old routine carry on a little longer. People adjust to change easier when they are given time to prepare. A new source of income will become available, making you much busier. Take time out of your jam packed schedule for personal relationships.

Although you hate being in the spotlight, there may have no other choice. You will have to answer some difficult questions from the people around you. If you made mistakes, admit them. It’s better to be honest than get a reputation for being deceitful. You might have to cancel personal plans to put things right. Try not to dwell on your disappointment. Seek the advice of a relative who has always exhibited grace under fire. Their help and compassion will be invaluable.

LIBRA September 24th - October 23rd

Don’t expect your best friend, romantic partner or business associate to go into battle for you. You must defend your own interests and ideas. If someone has been bullying you, summon your courage. Confront this troublemaker the next time they try to intimidate you. You’ll be amazed how quickly people rally around you. You’re a lot stronger than you realise and your independent display tells others you won’t be intimidated and paves the way for an exciting new opportunity.

CAPRICORN December 22nd - January 20th

TAURUS April 21st - May 21st

LEO July 24th - August 23rd

Pretending to know more than you do could lead to trouble. Go ahead and admit you don’t know much about a particular subject. A helpful friend or colleague will come forward to fill in the gaps of your knowledge. It’s never easy for you to admit vulnerabilities. Treat this situation as an opportunity for growth. Someone who admires your courage will express romantic interest in you. If you’re single, you may prefer to keep this relationship quiet until you make a commitment.

SCORPIO October 24th - November 22nd

Don’t keep pouring all your energy into your job. Although your work ethic is admirable, it could be affecting your outlook. There is more to life than earning money and carrying out responsibilities. You have to make time for fun. If you get passed up for a promotion, remain philosophical. This could be a sign that you should switch gears. Taking a long distance trip could restore your emotional balance. Why not visit an ancient city that evokes mystery and romance for you?

AQUARIUS January 21st - February 19th

GEMINI May 22nd - June 21st

VIRGO August 24th - September 23rd

SAGITTARIUS November 23rd - December 21st PISCES February 20th - March 20th

Anyone who tries undermining your confidence will be in for a big shock. You’re tired of being pushed around by jealous types or rivals. Instead of allowing yourself to be sidelined, you’ll stand your ground. If you’re dealing with an inconsiderate relative, don’t be afraid to end the relationship. There’s no reason you should be tied to someone who uses you as their emotional punch bag. Fortunately, friends, neighbours and colleagues will offer their full support. Try not to fall victim to peer pressure. Many of your friends want you to take a path that isn’t right for you. Be prepared to go separate ways, at least for a short time. Anyone who tries to make you feel guilty or foolish for this decision should be given a wide berth. You’re about to learn who truly has your best interests at heart. If you continue to do what is best for you, a moneymaking opportunity will come your way. This will be emotionally as well as financially rewarding.

CANCER June 22nd - July 23rd

Arguments over money can put undue strain on a close relationship. You’re tired of having all of your hard earned cash spent on diversions that don’t give you long term pleasure. It may be best to keep your bank account separate from that of a business partner or a loving partner. It will become more and more important for you to assert your independence and not feel that you have always to fit in with other people’s plans or ideas. Some people might not like that, but that’s their bad luck.

You might not be the winner in a contest for someone’s affections. There’s no point pursuing someone who clearly wants to be with someone else. Instead of dwelling on your heartache, find a healthy outlet for your frustration. Exercise can relieve stress. It doesn’t matter whether this means going to the gym, taking brisk walks or playing sports with friends. The important thing is to stay in motion. Beware of bad mouthing your romantic interest. It’s better to take the high road.

Family quarrels are draining your energy. It may be necessary to intervene on behalf of a relative who is being treated like a scapegoat. If the bickering continues, you might want to keep the warring parties far away from each other. This stressful environment isn’t healthy for anyone. Resist the temptation to forget your worries and woes with a shopping spree. Instead, spend quality time with someone who appreciates and understands you.

Ask yourself if a health problem is stress related. Go for a medical consultation. Obey the doctor’s instructions to the letter. If you are told to avoid certain foods, cut them out of your diet. Get to bed regularly. Stay away from people who make you upset. If that means taking time off work, so be it. Alternatively, someone closer to home may be the person who is making you anxious. You won’t be able to change their behaviour, so focus on establishing boundaries. Being too aggressive on the financial front can backfire. Instead of using strong arm tactics, make a strategic retreat. You don’t want to look desperate for business. Dealing with a lazy colleague will be a challenge. You’re tired of doing the lion’s share of the work. Be direct about your feelings. Beating about the bush won’t solve the problem. Explain why you’re upset, how the situation is affecting you and what you expect to happen to change things for the better.

Ford set for return to Le Mans 24 hour race F ORD has announced that it is returning to one of the most prestigious automobile races in the world – the 24 Hours of Le Mans – with its new Ford GT race car, based on the all-new ultra-high-performance supercar that goes on sale next year. The Ford GT race car will compete in the race, referred to by many as the Grand Prix of Endurance and Efficiency starting next year. It will compete in the Le Mans GT Endurance class for professional teams and drivers (LM GTE Pro). The new race car – a further proof point of Ford innovation – is based on the all-new Ford GT supercar unveiled in January. Both the production car and race car will arrive in 2016 to mark the 50th anniversary of Ford GT race cars placing 1-2-3 at the 1966 24 Hours of Le Mans. Ford went on to repeat its victory at Le Mans in 1967, 1968 and 1969. “When the GT40 competed at Le Mans in the 1960s, Henry Ford II sought to prove Ford could beat endurance racing’s most legendary manufacturers,” said Bill Ford, executive chairman, Ford Motor Company.

“We are still extremely proud of having won this iconic race four times in a row, and that same spirit that drove the innovation behind the first Ford GT still drives us today.” The new Ford GT race car will run the full 2016 schedules of the FIA World Endurance Championship and TUDOR United SportsCar Championship, making its competition debut in January 2016 in the Rolex 24 At Daytona, Florida. The two Ford teams will be operated by Chip Ganassi Racing with Felix Sabates (CGRFS). Both series teams intend to compete with a four-car effort at Le Mans. Drivers will be announced later. The all-new Ford GT serves as the pinnacle product of the new Ford Performance group, a division dedicated to providing innovation through performance. Set to deliver more than 12 new performance vehicles by 2020, Ford Performance will leverage its racing efforts and expertise to speed innovations on dedicated performance models and performance parts in order to more quickly iterate the latest technologies that can ultimately be applied to the full Ford vehicle line-up.

Striking rear design of the new Ford GT

The new Ford GT race car makes its race debut in January 2016 at the Daytona 24 hour race The performance segment is a growing business for Ford, as the company recognises its customers’ desire for vehicles that offer excellent fuel economy, leading technology and a great driving experience. The Ford Performance line-up includes Ford GT, Focus RS, F-150 Raptor, Shelby GT350 and Shelby GT350R, Focus ST and Fiesta ST. The Ford GT race car features a number of innovations Ford believes will not only make it competitive in LM GTE Pro, but ultimately positioned to provide benefits to each vehicle in the Ford line-up.

These include state-ofthe-art aerodynamics to deliver outstanding levels of downforce for improved stability with minimal drag, advanced lightweight composites featuring carbon fibre for an exceptionally rigid but light chassis, and the power and efficiency of EcoBoost technology. “As we developed the Ford GT, from the outset, we wanted to ensure we had a car that has what it takes to return Ford to the world of GT racing,” said

Raj Nair, Ford Motor Company group vice president, Global Product Development and chief technical officer. “We believe the Ford GT’s advances in aerodynamics, light-weighting and EcoBoost power will make for a compelling race car that can once again compete on a global stage.” Joining Ford in this project are Multimatic Motorsports, Roush Yates Engines, Castrol, Michelin, Forza Motorsport, Sparco, Brembo and CGRFS. The race car has undergone

extensive design and testing within Ford and Multimatic, with CGRFS providing input into the development. Roush Yates is supporting development of the 3.5-litre EcoBoost V6 – the most powerful EcoBoost production engine ever. The engine debuted in the TUDOR United SportsCar Championship in 2014. Since then it has captured significant overall wins at the 12 Hours of Sebring and Rolex 24 at Daytona.

Two-millionth Defender to be auctioned CELEBRATING 67 years of iconic Land Rover production, a unique vehicle has been built to commemorate the UK production of the twomillionth Series Land Rover and Defender. With a bespoke design and an all-star cast of special guests helping to complete the momentous build, ‘Defender 2,000,000’ has been created to be a fitting tribute to almost seven decades of Land Rover production in the Solihull plant. In December 2015, collectors and Defender fans will be given the opportunity to own this unique piece of Land Rover’s history when it is auctioned by auction house, Bonhams. Reflecting Defender’s heritage, all proceeds will be donated to Land Rover’s humanitarian and conservation partners – the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) and the Born Free Foundation. The vehicle features a plethora of distinctive finishing touches. A map of Red Wharf Bay – where the design for the original Land Rover was first drawn in the sand – is engraved into the aluminium fender, which contrasts with the exterior Indus Silver satin paint. A unique ‘Number 2,000,000’ badge sits on the rear of the vehicle, which is mirrored on the interior console. The design is finished with Santorini Black

wheels and wheel arches, roof, door hinges, grille and mirror caps. Inside, the leather seats also feature the ‘Red Wharf Bay’ graphic and ‘no 2,000,000’ logos have been stitched on the headrests. A bespoke aluminium plaque, signed by everyone who helped to assemble the vehicle is fitted to the driver’s seat plinth. On the front and rear, S90 HUE registration plates – a reference to the first ever pre-production Land Rover, registration ‘HUE 166’ – complete this one-ofa-kind Land Rover Defender. Production of the original Land Rover began at the famous Lode Lane, Solihull, facility in 1947 ahead of its launch at the Amsterdam Motor Show on 30 April 1948. Iconic, the Land Rover Defender

New DS brand shows ‘avant garde’ styling TEST DRIVE

DS 5

Now a separate brand from Citroen, Tom Scanlan tries out the top of the range DS 5

A

BOUT a year ago, PSA, the French group that includes Peugeot and Citroen, announced that its Citroen DS models would become a brand in their own right. Now, therefore, we have, simply, DS. No-one seems able to say what, if anything, DS stands for. It was first seen on the Citroen model DS in the fifties, and an interesting suggestion I heard recently was that the French word for goddess sounds the same as when you say DS as they would in France: day-ess. The DS people simply sum it all up as ‘the spirit of avant-garde’. Anyway, what of the new cars themselves. The range starts with the DS3, then the DS4, and the DS5 at the top. The difference between the Citroen DS5 and the new DS 5 is mainly at the front end. This of course had to be redesigned to remove the Citroen chevron insignia. New colours have been introduced, including the darkest of dark blues – very subtle. A particularly striking feature is the chrome ‘sabres’ that sweep from the windscreen along the bonnet sides. The DS has ‘scrolling’ indicator LEDs that seems to be the current fashion in the more expensive cars. Overall, you could say that the DS is one of the most stylish cars around. It is quite different to anything else on the road and the interior is equally unique, although little different to older Citroen DS5s. Anyone who has got into a DS 5, old or new, immediately remarks on how they might be sitting in an aeroplane. This is because of the array of switchgear in

the ceiling; there are even a pair of overhead lockers to complete the analogy. The new DS range starts at £25,980 for the Elegance version. There’s no doubt that the DS interiors will help to sell these cars. There’s a choice of three leathers, including a most attractive ‘watchstrap’ seat design. The seven-inch touchscreen has allowed the removal of twelve previous control buttons, but it all takes some learning. But is the DS more style than substance? They tell us that a key element is refinement. My only quibble about a Citroen DS 5 hybrid that I tested three years ago was that its diesel engine felt a little less refined than it should have. Now, having sampled three 2.0-litre diesel versions of the new DS, the 150PS, 180PS and the Hybrid, there is some improvement, but the engines were still noticeably diesel. As regards consumption, 46.7 mpg, 47.6 mpg and 37.6 mpg were recorded respectively on the busy test routes. Another claim, that of ‘dynamic hyper comfort’ seats, was always a dangerous one to make and, yes, they were comfortable, but no more than average, a little on the firm side. Poor road surfaces were as much a problem for this car’s suspension as for any other makes. Having said all that, I still ended up really liking the new DS and, given the choice, might even choose a manual version over an automated manual, so nice is the feel of this model. Certainly, for owners who like something different, go no further than the DS section of the nearest Citroen showroom.

SQUASH

Essex retain Harrow Cup in dominant fashion

T

HE prestigious Harrow Cup was retained in dominant fashion at Ipswich Sports Club on Saturday, with victories for Essex Junior Squash in all five age categories. Teams from Hertfordshire, Cambridgeshire and Suffolk were all despatched during the

course of a day, which provided some thrilling and entertaining squash action. In the U11’s the Essex team of Yusuf Sheikh, Josh Stephens, Edward Mason, Brooke Smith and Leah Brooke, defeated teams from Cambridgeshire, Suffolk and an Essex second team.

KICKBOXING

None of the five Essex 1 players dropped a single game on their way to maximum points from their 15 matches. Essex’s U13 team of Joel Braddock, Harry Martin, Michael Tallentire, Hattie Callen and Hannah Morley had a similarly impressive set of results against Hertfordshire, Suffolk and Essex 2. A single defeat in the all-Essex clash plus one loss against Suffolk saw the team take 13 victories from their 15 matches. The Essex U15 team faced opposition from Cambridgeshire, Suffolk and Essex 2. A tough and quality group would see Josh Perkins, Isaac Anderson, Kian Howard and Emma Bartley from Suffolk taking on the Essex 2’s of Oliver Green, Jamie Carroll, Josh Stinson, Aliza Sheik and Poppy Smee-Hotene. In the end the Essex team of Charlie Martin, Tim Bacon, Harry Kitchens, Piper Tatum and Amy Aspinall triumphed winning 12 of their 15 fixtures. Their toughest match was the group decider against Suffolk, which the team won 3-2.

In the U17s, a similarly tough group was expected with matches against Hertfordshire, Suffolk, Cambridgeshire and Essex 2. A 3-2 win over Herts was followed by 4-1 wins over Cambs and Suffolk. The all-Essex battle featured some highly competitive squash, particularly the number 1 clash between Joe Blackmur and Haydon Smith which was won by Haydon 2-1. This proved to be Essex 2’s only victory with Essex 1 completing a 4-1 win. In the end Essex won 15 of 20 matches to win the group by 16 points. The U19’s group was confined to three teams with Essex up against teams from Suffolk and Cambridgeshire. The team of Aaron Allpress, Will Southworth and Alice Green proved totally dominate with six wins out of six and a maximum 22 points, wrapping up the group before the final match was played. A wonderful day’s squash was had by all. A massive thank you goes to Emily Ison and Ipswich Sports Club for letting the Harrow Cup 2015 take over their club for the day. Thanks also to the staff at Off the Wall Squash (Karen & Lauren Selby) for organising what was a highly competitive event and to Gabby and Simon from Kentbridge Sports for sponsoring the event, yet again, with Harrow. HORNCHURCH AMATEUR BOXING CLUB

Falcon’s take flight at Battle of Kent Winners all-round at ‘gym shows’

S

UNDAY July 5, saw Romford’s Falcon Kickboxing club take six fighters to the Battle of Kent fight event in Chatham, Kent. It is the biggest event of its kind held in the county. The six fighters were selected from those who have shown dedication in training and technical ability to hold their own against pre-matched opponents of the same Emily Grain declared winner experience. The Battle of Kent event which is open to fighters of all ages, both Juniors and Adults, has seen a number of future World champions hone their skills at the competition, in the early stages of their amateur careers including Falcons own two-time World Full Contact Kickboxing Champion Liam Wells. First up for Team Falcon was current IKF English Open champion Lenie Rodgers. Rogers opened the show for Falcon displaying some excellent boxing ability and footwork, and after three high intensity rounds was declared the winner. The always consistent Daniel Burke was next up. Burke showed his usual technical ability and

great work rate easing to a good win. Tyler Sharpe did everyone very proud showing some fantastic kicking ability combined with his boxing. Sharpe was declared the winner after three good rounds for the young fighter. Sophie West was the first of the females up for Falcon and dominated her opponent so much in the first round the fight was stopped and Sophie was declared the winner. Emily Grain, who is normally a big performer for Falcon continued Team Falcons success showing the quality she has over three good rounds in which she was declared victorious Daniel Stephens was the oldest and heaviest representing the club on the day. He was in a heavy hitting three round contest which was evident when the blood covered fighters ended the bout. After a great performance Stephens was declared the winner making it six wins out of six fights for Falcon Kickboxing Club. The next event for the club will be when Falcons Sarah Worsfold fights for the European Full Contact Kickboxing title on September 6, 2015 against Holland’s Shanice Josefina.

HELMSFORD had a weekend with two fine wins for the first team as the highlights. They measured up against Brentwood in both the league and T20 and emerged victorious both times. Karamat Ali with five wickets and Jack Sterland with a mature unbeaten 70 led the way on Saturday. A hard hitting unbeaten 55 from James Clifford provided the heroics on Sunday. The only disappointment on the pitch came from the second team. A poor display all round cost them dear at Wanstead. Despite a few late wickets they went down to a three wicket defeat against one of their title rivals. A superb innings from David Thrift rescued the third team from peril and ultimately led to a comfortable win. Thrift’s brilliant 120 was well

supported by Sean Sullivan (33) and Stephen Drain (29) as Chelmsford posted 227. Neal Abhyankar was the chief wicket-taker with six for 47 as Hutton were bowled out for 150. Half centuries from Phil Arnold and Ben Dethridge helped the fourth team win at Southend. Tom Arnold (3-35) bowled another useful spell to help restrict the home team to 195 for seven with Grant (58) and Elliott (51*) the top scorers. Phil Arnold (64) gave Chelmsford a good start and Dethridge (51*) completed the job. The fifth team also achieved a fairly straightforward win although they had to suffer playing on a very poor wicket. Chingford struggled to 141 thanks to late order resistance from Harborne (39) but batted for almost 60 overs. Luke Smith (3-11) was Chelmsford’s

star turn with the ball. Adi Vohra (69) helped to make short work of that target. Bob Shortman was the hero as the sixth team beat Leigh on Sea by one wicket in the day’s most exciting game. He came in on the back of a hat-trick from Ken Sandeman and saw off the possibility of four in a row before finding the boundary. Ian Taylor (51) and Jack Karmy (45) had made important contributions in pursuit of Leigh’s 177. Bell (54) had top scored for the visitors whilst Peter Banfield (4-33) had impressed with the ball. The Sunday second team game and under-16 Matchplay both fell victim to dreadful weather in the morning. The four o’clock start for the T20 proved ideal and James Clifford in particular made it ideal viewing for Chelmsford supporters.

London finale for first all-electric racing series

B

ATTERSEA Park hosted the final rounds of the first ever Formula E Championship for all-electric racing cars. British driver Sam Bird won the last ePrix of the season, whilst the all-electric series’ inaugural titles were won by racing driver Nelson Piquet and the e.dams-Renault team. An incredible start to the season has seen six different victors in the first six races, with Lucas di Grassi (Audi Sport Abt) winning the inaugural race in Beijing. Later on, Sébastien Buemi (e.dams-Renault) became the first to win a second race, a feat subsequently matched by Nelson Piquet (Nextev TCR).

For the first time in Formula E, two races were held on the same weekend. After Saturday’s race had seen e.dams-Renault team, led by Alain Prost, cap a fine season by becoming the category’s first ever winner of the Teams’ Title, Sunday’s contest would determine the outcome of the first ever Drivers’ Championship. Piquet started the second and final London race as championship leader, trailed by Sébastien Buemi and Lucas di Grassi. Stéphane Sarrazin (Venturi) took pole position after the final qualifying session of the season was disrupted by rain. Sébastien Buemi started sixth

on the grid, ahead of his title rivals Lucas di Grassi and Nelson Piquet, who were eleventh and sixteenth respectively. Stéphane Sarrazin crossed the finish line first, but he was handed a time penalty for exceeding his energy allowance, meaning that the race win went to Sam Bird. Most attention was however focused on the three title contenders. Running fifth when the drivers came in for their mandatory mid-race pit stops to change cars, Sébastien Buemi looked on course to secure the title, but a spin on his out lap cost him a place. Despite making a number of attempts to regain his position right until the final lap, the Swiss driver was unable to find a way past Bruno Senna, which handed the title to Nelson Piquet who finished seventh to win the championship by a single point. Technical partner of the all-electric series, Renault Sport Technologies saw the 40 SparkRenault SRT01_E all-electric racing cars conclude their campaign in London’s Battersea Park. Renault has done its job to perfection this season, demonstrating time and again its expertise in ensuring all 10 teams benefitted from an equal chance of winning in reliable, safe and fast single-seaters. It has also supported the stewards in getting to grips with the unprecedented procedures related to this new technology. Patrice Ratti, Managing Director of Renault Sport Technologies, said: “Congratulations to Nelson Piquet on claiming the drivers’ title which means he joins e.dams-Renault as the series’ first winners.

“This season has been a very successful one for three reasons. First of all, from a technical point of view, with Spark, we have managed to achieve an unprecedented level of performance and reliability for this technology. And secondly, from a sporting point of view, with the teams’ title win for e.dams Renault, brilliantly led by Alain Prost and JeanPaul Driot. ‘‘Sébastien has missed out on the drivers’ title by a point but both he and Nicolas can be proud of the superb season that they have had and which has enabled us to win the teams’ title.’’
