the county participating in the scheme include Barleylands in Billericay, Braintree District Museum, Chelmsford Museum, Colchester Castle, Colchester Natural History Museum, Essex Police Museum, Harlow Museum, Hollytrees Museum in Colchester and Hylands House in Chelmsford. The free passport has five missions for holders to complete which adds to the excitement of the scheme, including: Visit a museum you have never been to before; join in one of the craft activities and draw your favourite

object from one museum in your passport. For those who complete all five missions successfully, there is an additional Museum Explorer Certificate available in recognition of their extra achievement. If you want to look further afield outside the county of Essex, museum development officers in Hertfordshire and Bedfordshire have teamed-up with their Essex counterparts so you could in total visit the 21 museums taking part in the Explorer Passport scheme across the three counties.

County Councillor Roger Hirst, Cabinet Member for Customer Services, Libraries, Planning and the Environment said: “The Museum Explorer Passport has been developed to show families across the three counties the range of fantastic and affordable summer activities that are available right on their doorstep. “Why not try something new this summer and explore the history of Essex and beyond.” To find out more visit the website: www.museumexplorerpassport.com.

HE Diana Award, set up in memory of Princess Diana’s belief that young people have the power to change the world for the better, has Prime Minister David Cameron as Patron and the support of the HRH Duke of Cambridge and HRH Prince Harry. Since 1999, it has recognised more than 42,000 young people who have made a positive difference to the lives of others and their communities. The Diana Award believe that young people should be encouraged for their contributions to society,

empowered to reach their full potential and they should be engaged in social action as early in life as possible. Basildon Borough Youth Council’s work on an antibullying campaign has been honoured with the prestigious award. Their successful CYBERSTOP anti-bullying video is now being used by Essex Police in schools across Basildon. Their material was developed in response to a need to stop cyber-bullies, identified at youth conferences in 2014. Cllr Terri Sargent, Basildon Council’s cabinet member for community said: “Basildon

Council is extremely proud of its youth council. The Diana Award will encourage them to continue their fantastic anti-bullying work and will hopefully inspire others to take a stand against bullying. The chair of the BBYC, Ellen Burrell, said: “We are delighted to receive the award and are so proud of the achievement. The group worked very hard to make sure that victims of bullying have a voice. If we have even changed one person’s life through the project we will be really happy.” For more information: www.diana-award.org.uk.

Earthzest Organics Southend-based skincare company win Bronze at prestigious beauty awards

E

THICAL skincare company Earthzest Organics, has won a Bronze Award at the prestigious UK FreeFrom Skincare Awards 2015 for their best selling Frankincense Anti-Aging Balm. The company has only been trading for just over a year and entered just one product (compared to multiple entries by large companies such as Neal’s Yard, Dr Organic and Sukin), yet despite being up against such stiff opposition, they still managed to make it through to the Finals and pick up an Award. The winners were announced at the Love Natural Love Organic Show which was held at Olympia on Friday July 3 and co-presented by well-known TV personality and author, Janey Lee Grace. Earthzest’s Founder Jackie Callow was joined at the Awards by their spokesmodel Victoria Eisermann who is the founder of The

K-9 Angels charity which rescues and rehomes street dogs in Romania and a fan of the Earthzest Organics products. Earthzest have taken organic skincare to the extreme and offer a unique, handblended range of 31-cruelty-free face, body, bath and baby products, 28 of which are 100% organic. The entire range is synthetic-free and formulated for sensitive skin (including eczema and acne) and because they contain no added water or other cheap fillers, all the products are highly concentrated and full of natural vitamins, minerals, omegas and anti-oxidants, which work in synergy with the body to re-balance the skin and give a visible improvement in just one week. Earthzest products are available online at www.earthzest.co.uk and local stockists include The Therapy Life Centre (www. therapylifecentre.co.uk), Ditsy Daisy Gift Shop and The Dawn Lister Therapy Centre (both in Leigh Broadway).

Ace experience on Centre Court Helen Clarke reports on a top day out at Wimbledon watching World No.1 Serena Williams

Serena is unstoppable clinching the ladies’ title for a sixth time. Inset, Helen second from left and friends watching the action

I

WAS fortunate to have Centre Court tickets for Wimbledon, which meant I would get to see the top seeds battle it out in the most prestigious tennis venue in the world. It also meant that I didn’t have to join the lengthy queue this year! We watched Gasquet beat Dimitrov, before British ladies player Heather Watson (seeded 51 in the WTA World Rankings) took on World Number 1 and who would become this year’s ladies’ final winner, Serena Williams.

The first set only lasted 25 minutes as Watson struggled to deal with Williams’ immense power. But second set, Watson turned it on. She looked more energetic, determined and driven than ever before. She moved Serena around the court and used her athleticism to grind out points that would have eluded her in the first set. She then did the unthinkable and broke Williams’ serve clinching the second set 6-4. Whilst it wasn’t nice to see the world’s top women player hitting so many unforced errors, it did present steely Brit Watson, with an amazing opportunity. Sadly Watson’s luck ran out when Serena demonstrated WHY she is World No. 1 and fought back to win the third set 7-5 but - what a performance. Watson certainly did us proud. Williams then went on to win Saturday’s final beating Spain’s Garbine Muguruza to clinch the prestigious title for the sixth time. Hopefully Watson’s sheer determination and fight will inspire a new generation of girls to pick up a racket and underdogs like her will soon be toasting glory. Could 2016 be her year? If you have been inspired by our British hopes - Murray and Watson in this year’s Wimbledon, try giving tennis a go for Free at a local club or park near you. For more details visit www.gbtw.co.uk. HEALTH BENEFITS

Disney stars help kids get active

Tgfs gsf POPULARhgsfgfsghs heroes hgfsghshg and heroines from Disney’s Frozen, Toy Story, Monsters Inc and Big Hero 6 are prompting children to get fit and active with games and activities during the school holidays. Parents and teachers are being urged to sign up to this year’s Ten Minute Shake Up campaign spearheaded by Change4Life and Disney. The campaign encourages children aged five to 11 to do ten minute bursts of moderate to vigorous activity - inspired by Disney characters - throughout the day, every day, to reach 60 minutes of exercise daily. It is a great way to introduce them to the vital benefits of regular physical activity. Through the Change4Life 10 Minute Shake Up game, children can join one of four Disney teams: Frozen, Toy Story, Monsters Inc. and Big Hero 6 and help their team win by doing as many Shake Ups as they can every day. This means their youngsters can exercise with Elsa, whoop it up with Woody, sweat it out with Sulley and hop with Hiro! This is the second year that Change4Life has teamed up with Disney with last year’s campaign resulting in the nation’s kids being active for an extra 104 million minutes last summer. PUB RESTORATION COMPLETE

A King of pubs

T

HE doors of The King’s Head in Chipping Ongar, finally opened to the public on Wednesday July 8, after an extensive renovation. The Listed Coaching Inn built in 1679, had been closed for over five years. A £1m investment is testament to its incredible transformation. Inside is an appealing mix of traditional features; think Inglenook fireplaces and exposed beams, which are very much evident in the 30-seat doubleheight private dining room which has been taken back to its timber framed roof. Other areas ooze industrial chic with impressive light fittings, exposed brickwork and stripped floors. Outside a new dining terrace seats 30 guests with seating for a further 30 in the walled garden. This al-fresco area leads into the newly built extension, an

Fun to be had at Hadleigh Park

impressive light and spacious cafe dining area which seats around 90 guests. Here you can dine on fresh handmade pizzas to order cooked in the wood-fired pizza oven, or grilled meat and fish from the unique charcoal Josper grill, the signature cooking style of Oakman Inns who now run The King’s Head. It is the fourth establishment they have opened in 2015. Known for their culture of working with and for the community and their commitment to ethical sustainability, all the Oakman Collection of pubs and restaurants have a tradition of raising awareness and funds for a worthy local cause. At The King’s Head this tradition is being maintained with every Belly of Pork dish sold raising funds for the Chelmsford-based Helen Rollason Cancer Charity.

General Manager, Rachel Wyatt said: “We’ve been working towards the opening for some time and my deputy Faye Cooper, assistant Carly Stovell and I, have been made to feel really welcome in Ongar. We’ve put together a fantastic 45-strong team who are all local - it’s already brilliant.” Cllr Paul Keska, a District Councillor for Epping Forest and resident of Chipping Ongar said: “We must congratulate CEO Peter Borg-Neal and his team for not only the wonderful restoration of this historic coaching inn but also for the creation of some 40 jobs for local people.” The King’s Head will be open from 8am-11pm, Sunday-Thurs and 8am-1am Friday and Saturday.

NATIONAL MUM AND WORKING AWARDS

Essex PR firm shorlisted

A

DIA PR based in Earls Colne has been shortlisted for Flexible Business Of The Year in the national Mum and Working Awards. With double the entries receied from last year and to be nominated within the same category as the NCT, is a huge achievement for the Essexbased company. Adia PR was founded by Alison Shadrack in November 2013. Coming from a marketing background and having already run two successful food import businesses herself, Alison wanted to offer her knowlege and expertise to other small businesses and entrepreneurs alike. Alison took on her first member of the team within just under a year and the business is continuing to grow. On being shortlisted, Alison said: “I am absolutely delighted Adia PR has been shorlisted for Flexible Business of the Year. I’m a mum of two young boys, trying to juggle running the business with family life, so I know a bit about flexibility. Duff “My two account directors areRyan also mums who also need to take care of their children during the school holidays. Some days they bring them to work and the children will be chasing each other around in the garden whilst we’re working away. “I will continue to hire mums with the right experience and skillset as in my experience their productivity levels more than make up for any time off required. Alison added: “Flexibility is key when you’re a mother and a business owner which is why being nominated in this category is so special to us. It really is a testament for

everything I’ve set out to achieve at Adia. An agency that works for its clients but also a business that works for the team.” The awards will take place on September 22, at RBS in London’s Bishopsgate. Judges include: Caprice Bourret, Annabel Karmel MBE and Jacqueline Gold.

WIPE AWAY THOSE TEARS CHARITY BALL

Local businesses creating jobs MORE than a quarter of businesses in Essex are expecting to employ more staff in the coming year and more than 75 per cent aim to grow their business in the next two to three years, according to a survey conducted by Essex County Council. This positive business news was revealed after more than 1,000 businesses across all sectors in the county were consulted in the survey which was commissioned in autumn last year to provide a clearer understanding of the business views of Essex. The survey found that the highest proportion of business establishments in the county are in wholesale and retail, followed by the construction sector and professional, scientific and technical sectors. One in seven businesses currently have vacancies and are looking to recruit new staff.

GETTING BEHIND THE WHEEL

FOR THE ITALIAN JOB T

HE 70-year old retired Police and Local Government Officer and Linda, 62, first got to hear of The Italian Job from a friend who had taken part in two previously. “It sounded really good fun, with the added bonus that it raised funds for childrens charities,” says Bill. In 26 years the event has raised around £24m for children’s charities, This year Bill and Linda hope to raise at least £1,500. This is their 9th Italian Job rally. The event launched in 1990 is the brainchild of an Italian lady, Giulia St George who is now in her early 80s and who still organises the event with her son Freddie and daughter Paola. Its aim is to give those who take part the chance of an adventure holiday on four wheels - making new friends, exploring new places, going off the beaten track, sampling Italy’s famously good food and wine and improving your driving and navigational skills. What more could you ask for?

Imagine driving the roof-top car track featured in the original Michael Caine film The Italian Job in your own Mini. That’s exactly what Bill Handley and wife Linda will be doing this October when they take part in the Italian Job Mini Rally. Participants get sponsored and can take part in any of the cars featured in the original film. So the course is always a heady mix of mostly veteran and new Minis plus Aston Martin DB4s, an E-type Jaguars. “At the time I did not own a Mini, so had one prepared for me by my friend who owned a garage. That was in 2005,”

explains Bill. “We have taken part every year since, other than in 2006 when I was in hospital. In 2009 I officially retired and decided to have a Mini specially made for me. It was built to our own specification.” In common with many people, Bill had seen the original Italian Job film numerous times. “The classic Minis in the film hold a very special place in the hearts of those of us ‘of a certain age.’

Almost everyone over 40 has a story to tell about a Mini.” “I first had a Mini van in 1972, then a 1275 GT in 1978. The next Mini was in 2005. They are great fun to drive and turn heads wherever you go. In total I have now had eight Minis. I currently own four. This year I will be driving in a red 1375 SPI Mini built by Wood & Picket c1989, we are Team 28” he adds. So how does Bill prepare

the car for the rally? “Our Mini is well maintained, regularly serviced and generally well looked after. That is all the preparation required, other than putting on the Italian Job logo’s, and those of any sponsors. Making sure of course that it ‘shines’ I also have a purpose built Mini trailer that really does cause a storm wherever we take it. We have twice taken it on the Italian Job.” The couple will be driving their car out to Italy for the rally which revs into gear on October 29th. Starting in Rome the rally includes many navigational stages, special stages, visits to some rather special places, including Formula 1 circuits and the Linghotto, Turin, rooftop circuit. Made famous in the 1969 film.

In Rome and Turin, the IJ Mini’s are escorted around the City by the respective Police forces. An experience never to be forgotten. Apart from his beloved ‘shiny’ cars, in his spare time Bill enjoys sailing, clay shooting and racing Chinese Dragon Boats. Most of all though, the couple love to spend time with their three children and six grandchildren.

If you’re mad for Minis or a fan of the cult 60s film and fancy being part of this actionpacked adventure, you can. Entry to the rally costs £1,200 per person including travel to Italy, accommodation and other exciting extras. To find out more or to sign up, visit www.italianjob.com.

“Coaching is like getting a massage for the mind except the effects don’t wear off in a few hours!”

As a Dad it has given me the ability not to judge my kids. We do this typically quite a lot, we see it as part of our role and quite likely a big part of how we were brought up as children. However, I’m learning that by asking questions and empowering the boys to find their own answers instead of pointing the finger of blame, making them feel sillier than they already do or taking out my own frustrations on them it means that they have very little to resist and as a result my relationship with both is stronger and closer and their decision making skills and sense of self generally has really improved! Try making a mental note of how many times you judge your kids over the course of a day, it’ll surprise you how natural it is! Then try to get them to come up with the answer you are just dying to verbalise and ask yourself how hard it was to do that. It saves me about 10 arguments a day with my very headstrong 12 year old! In my relationship I don’t coach Kate (Jeff’s girlfriend Kate Dwyer) because it would become annoying but we are very effortless together and I’ve no doubt that the knowledge I’m acquiring is giving me such a rounded and reasonable approach to the

J

EFF Brazier may be best known as a TV personality and also father to sons Bobby, 12, and Freddy, 10, from his relationship with late TV star Jady Goody. However, the 36year old from Harlow has recently qualified as a life coach and has set up his own life coaching agency, Come Coach With Me. He now has 18 coaches on his books as well as his own private practice and matches the clients with the coach depending on their individual needs. Having single-handedly raised his two sons since the passing of their mother six years ago, Jeff has found great satisfaction over the last 18 months in sharing his experience as a single parent of children dealing with grief with other recently bereaved families. It was from seeing how effective and rewarding those meetings were that he decided he would like to reach more people and enrolled on the UK Coaching Partnerships Life Coaching course held at Girton College, Cambridge. With this qualification, Jeff aims to apply his new talents to the specialist areas he has personal experience in, believing that he can add a tremendous amount of value to his clients through one to one session or the seminars and workshops he looks forward to offering. “I believe I will benefit from how comfortable people feel in my company; the listening skills my day job has enabled me to develop are a huge asset and it will undoubtedly be an advantage that people may have an idea of the kind of challenges I have faced in life. They can be confident of my ability to show empathy and to be able to understand where each client is coming from, regardless of their situation. It feels like I have found my purpose in life,” says Jeff. We spoke to Jeff more at length about his inspirational new venture

What is Life Coaching?

For me, Life Coaching is about empowering someone to think clearer, see further, listen harder and feel stronger. It enables the client

to take control, to ask themseves ‘what do I want’? and put a strategy in place to take steps to achieving those goals. A chance to be truly listened to and a chance to be honest with yourself. How wonderful to be able to have the benefit of a great listener who is trained in asking the best questions in order to help you find the answers for yourself. This is a resource you just can’t come close to in conversation with your nearest and dearest.

Is it just for people who are facing difficulties?

Absolutely not, I have corporate and SME clients which employ me to help their workforce move forwards, to refine and improve, it works for everyone and there is no expertise in any particular subject required because my natural ability to question and the clients response will give me everything I need to help them in shifting perspective and highlighting the areas for improvement. Taking a client to the realisation they do have control and they can choose to change things brings me a lot of satisfaction and is almost present in all encounters regardless of subject, we give our power away but just don’t realise were doing it. I help people to be powerful again!

How did you get involved?

I had a session three years ago and remember not having a clue what it was all about but keeping an open mind and going for it anyway. I have always been into personal development so I took all of my clutter with me and in one hour and what felt like a straightforward conversation, I was full of direction and clarity, I had a clear plan and had the steps in place to go and achieve it all! I was absolutely intrigued by what on earth she had done to make months of procrastinating, my worst habit, completely disappear! At the start of 2014 the same coach became a tutor of a coaching course at Cambridge University and asked me if I’d like to sign up to study, I was still so baffled by what spell she had put on me I snapped at the chance and I’ve not looked back since.

How does it help you with raising the boys and in your relationship?

Wow, when I started learning the tools required to be a coach I immediately started to apply them to my personal life, if you are learning how to be an effective problem solver for others why wouldn’t you start at home!

13

experience way we treat each other. I very often avoid little tiffs by choosing to see the meaning behind the words instead of reacting to the words themselves which are very often misinterpreted or confused anyway, again this saves me a few arguments with her as well! Life’s so much easier!

Why should people use it?

Because it puts you firmly back on your intended path and frees you of your limiting beliefs or negative influences, it helps you identify what you want and how to go about getting it. It’s incredible positive, nothing like counselling and with each hour you learn a number of things about yourself that you then use to construct the life and the experiences that you dare to say you deserve and want!

Are you still doing TV work or is this your main focus now? I’m writing a weekly column for both Closer Online and the Huffington Post, I’m developing a parenting strand for This Morning alongside going all over the world with them for their competition shoots and I’m about to partner with digital agency Jellyfish to launch a YouTube channel

which will enable me to pass on all of the fascinating lessons I’m learning in my role as a coach and full time Dad. I don’t always know how I manage to juggle everything, I think it’s an advantage that as a coach I am really good at time management and planning which kind of helps! I feel really lucky that I have found my absolute life’s purpose in helping people and to be able to combine that with the TV career is just a dream.

Why did you set your agency comecoachwithme.com up?

Whilst studying we had to do 60 hours of voluntary coaching so I sent out a tweet and realised there was a lot of interest in coaching as a support, in fact far more interest than I could cope with myself so i shared the clients out amongst my colleagues and realised that I could help more people if i created a team of us. At present we have 20 coaches, some of whom are also NLP practitioners, counsellors and CBT therapists and collectively I’d say we cover all subjects with specialities from Anxiety to business, bereavement to stress we’ve got someone for everything.

What kind of subjects do you cover?

I don’t like to limit myself to bereavement or parenting just because they’re the areas I obviously understand the most. Ironically aside from the buzz I get from coaching businesses to move to new levels of profit and productivity my favourite subject to get my hands on is anxiety. Whilst I’ve never experienced one myself, it absolutely intrigues me and having had so much experience helping others through theirs successfully.I now feel like I’ve seen enough of a few similar patterns to believe i really have a great grasp of what any client needs to banish their anxiety and panic attacks for good.

How much does a Life Coaching session cost?

The priceless nature of these life changing ‘light bulb’ moments all clients enjoy make the price of these sessions very competitive. I want coaching to be accessible to all so the majority of my 20 coaches at comecoachwithme.com offer a free taster session. I personally charge £100 an hour but would gladly offer readers of Made in Essex their first session at £70.

What do you give talks on?

I’m running a course on positivity at the moment which is incredibly inspiring and has left my audiences feeling highly motivated! We cover all of the tricks like gratitude, power of thought and mindfulness to maintain a more positive outlook but more importantly focus on the limiting factors and key influences that are draining our positivity daily. My clients are claiming that it changes their outlook completely and that it has enabled them to take control of their life in ways they didn’t think possible.

Why is wellbeing becoming so important to everyone?

Why does it work for everyone?

Coaches ask simple questions that lead the client down their chosen subject path, the client just sees it as a conversation, the coach however sees a bigger picture and is able to use those tools and a key structure to enable the client to have the realisations they need without telling them what they should or shouldn’t be doing. It’s incredible, I don’t teach, guide or educate the client, I learn with them! We have the realisations together. I use a lot of what I learn from people in my own day to day life, every session teaches me more about the human computer, how we process things and very often how we limit ourselves and act against ourselves!

Heath. I’m able to visit client’s homes or I can coach over Skype which makes me accessible from anywhere.

Where do you hold these sessions?

I have days in London, either at the Rosewood Hotel in Holborn or the HMS President on the Embankment or I hold sessions at the Down Hall Hotel in Hatfield

We go to the gym, yoga or spa. We spend lots of money going to the beauticians and hairdressers because we care about our appearance and sense of physical wellness. We are starting to grow in a collective consciousness that if we spend so much time on the outside doesn’t it make sense to look after the inside too? Where the mind goes the body will follow so really it makes sense to achieve a mental wellbeing because then everything else just falls in to place anyway! Coaching is like getting a massage for the mind except the effects don’t wear off in a few hours! For more details: comecoachwithme.com

Travel Europe

Top destinations for family ho Europe is famed for its historic sights and worldclass museums, but it doesn’t want for more family-friendly attractions. Choose the right place and youngsters will fall for what the continent has to offer: storybook castles to fire an imagination of any age; forests straight out of a Brothers Grimm fairytale; secret islands echoing with the squawks of wildlife; beaches with serious sandcastle potential… the list goes on.

A

LL of the above and more feature in Lonely Planet’s pick of 10 places perfect for a family holiday in Europe this year.

1. Kent, England, UK

If all Kent brings to mind is the Dartford Crossing, P&O Ferries and the Archbishop of Canterbury, it’s time to look again, as the so-called ‘garden of England’ is growing in popularity – and it’s full of opportunities for time travel to intrigue curious young minds. Pack the bucket and spade for some retrofun at sandy Broadstairs beach, then soak up the Victorian atmosphere of Charles Dickens’ one-time stomping ground. Give your clan a glimpse into the Middle Ages as you explore the higgledy-piggledy heart of Sandwich. Or blow them away with the views of the English Channel as you walk along the wind-buffeted White Cliffs of Dover. Still riding high on the opening of the Turner Contemporary in 2011 (turnercontemporary.org), Margate has gentrified without losing its personality – and it also has an ace up its sleeve when it comes to keeping the kids happy with the recent reopening of Dreamland (dreamland.co.uk), with a revamped wooden roller coaster (the UK’s oldest), a Big Wheel, a 1920s helterskelter and a carousel, is a grand example of nostalgia reinvented.

2. County Kerry, Ireland

Mysterious islands off a craggy coastline; mist-wreathed mountains and lakes; castles, abbeys and other ruins to explore… no wonder County Kerry appeals to the imagination of

travellers of all ages. Better still, the popular Dingle Peninsula and the Ring of Kerry – part of the Wild Atlantic Way (ireland.com/en-gb/ wild-atlantic-way) – have roadside attractions every few miles to keep those with short attention spans engaged. This wild part of Ireland is perfect for children (and adults) with a sense of adventure. If you’re visiting during the summer months, test their sea legs on the short ferry to Great Blasket Island or, for older wouldbe sailors, take the boat to the Skelligs; admire the raw power of the Atlantic Ocean during a horse ride along Rossbeigh Beach or let your water babes sign up for surf school; take an epic journey through Killarney National Park, where the Gap of Dunloe trip The Black Forest looks like the backdrop to a Brothers Grimm fairytale. combines a boat Image by chbaum / Shutterstock trip with walking, cycling or a pony and to Guinness), Café Schäfer, which claims trap. Oh, and while you’re there, don’t forget the original recipe for Black Forest gateau, a child-pleasing side trip to see Fungie, the and Germany’s highest waterfall, where wild bottlenose dolphin that has been visiting red squirrels run riot. Elsewhere, you’ll find Dingle Harbour regularly for more than 30 lakes for a cooling dip, like forest-rimmed years.

3. Black Forest, Germany

Kid-pleasing pickings are rich in the Black Forest: endless walking trails, well-marked cycle paths, lidos in every town, gentle ski slopes – you name it, this neck of the woods in southwestern Germany has got it. On a budget? The eco-savvy Konus (blackforest-tourism.com/info/KONUS) guest card is a bonus, giving you free travel on local buses and trains. Your euro will stretch far, too, at secluded farm-stays, where mooing cows are your wake-up call. Take the kids to Triberg, home to a cuckoo clock the size of a house (the world’s biggest according

sits atop a cluster of hot springs, and there are numerous indoor and outdoor pools and spas. Adults can nurse their ailments (or hangovers) in the healing waters while the little ones make a splash. Kids will particularly love the wave machine at Gellért and Széchenyi’s whirlpool. Afternoon boosts for weary little troops are found in the form of Hungarian pastries – sweet-toothed members of your party will relish the countless cakes and fruit tarts. What’s next? The zoo, the circus (Europe’s only permanent big top), a puppet show, or a journey on the Children’s Railway? The latter is run almost entirely by 10- to 14-year-olds and runs throughout the year.

5. Vorarlberg, Austria

Ibiza’s coastline is dotted with pretty bays for families to explore. Image by Lukasz Janyst / Shutterstock

Empty beaches and superb cycling and camping await in the Aland Archipelago. Image by BMJ / Shutterstock

Titisee and Schluchsee. Or head north to the gingerbready villages of the Kinzigtal. Half-timbered Gengenbach was a film-set for the Augustus Gloop scene in Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, while cute-as-a-button Schiltach has a zipline (hirschgrund-zipline. de/) through the treetops.

4. Budapest, Hungary

Known for its history and nightlife, Hungary’s capital is surprisingly family-friendly – so much so that you may need only make minor tweaks to your itinerary to keep the kids happy. Start with the swimming baths. Budapest

Nudging the Arlberg Alps, Vorarlberg is often overlooked in the dash to Tyrol’s slopes. What a shame. This region of rolling dairy country, wildflower-freckled pastures and quiet valleys is storybook stuff for families and it’s more affordable than Austria’s more popular parts. Tourist offices (vorarlberg.travel) can recommend child-friendly trails and backto-nature farm stays, many of which arrange free activities to keep the kids occupied – from waterfall hikes to craft workshops. Whizz around the Bregenzerwald’s dairies and cownibbled meadows on Käsestrasse (‘Cheese Road’ – kaesestrasse.at); gawp at giant purple cows in Bludenz at the Milka Chocolate Festival in July; or even adopt one of the region’s longlashed beauties at Kräuterbauernhof Erath (kuhforyou.at). Head northwest to Bregenz to ride the Pfänder cable car to 1064m for views of the not-so-distant Alps and encounters with deer, wild boar, ibex and marmots. Bregenz sits on the shore of the Lake Constance, where well-signposted cycling trails dip into neighbouring Germany and Switzerland, and kayaks can be hired from La Canoa (lacanoa.com/kanuvermietung/ kanustationen).

6. Åland Archipelago, Finland

Off Finland’s western coast, the selfgoverning, Swedish-speaking islands making up the Åland Archipelago are popular destinations by ferry from the Finnish mainland and Sweden, but scarcely known further afield. Yet as the sunniest spot in northern Europe, they’re an idyllic getaway with sweeping beaches (Degersand has sublime swimming and camping) and flat, scenic cycling alongside green fields, red granite and sparkling sea. Allow three gentle days to cycle the 65-km-long Mail Road, on the FinlandSweden postal route that crossed Åland between 1638 and 1895, passing two of the main island’s mightiest sights: the 14th-

century castle Kastelholms Slott, set on a picturesque inlet, and ruined Russian fortress Bomarsund, complete with cannonball scars. In the archipelago’s lively capital, Mariehamn, kid-pleasing favourites include a four-masted merchant barque, the Pommern, moored outside the state-ofthe-art maritime museum Sjofartsmuseum, and slides, saunas, and indoor and outdoor pools with water jets at Mariebad water park (mariehamn.ax/mariebad).

7. Ibiza, Spain

Ibiza’s megaclubs may be the stuff of legend but the island’s 80s/90s clubbing heyday is behind it, the original party people are all grown up, and these days they have kids in tow when they make their pilgrimage. And so it is that this pine-clad island has taken off with families. Sheltered, child-friendly beaches and pretty bays dot the shores from Santa Eularia d’es Riu in the east up to Portinatx on the northern tip. Island culture is welcoming of little people – eating out won’t be a problem here – and rural agroturismos (fancy farm stays) in Ibiza’s interior make great stomping grounds for wild young things. Peaced-out hippie markets and Ibiza Town’s helter-skelter, Unesco-listed old town will also delight them. The west coast clubbing scene at Sant Antoni de Portmany is alive and well, of course, but elsewhere this Balearic island now rocks to a gentler rhythm.

8. Normandy, France

Normandy delivers when it comes to family trips, whether you’re looking for an actionpacked holiday, a rustic escape or a beach break. Thrill-seekers of all ages are spoiled for choice in this corner of France. Take to the river in a kayak or canoe on the Eure (aventureure.fr); practise your climbing skills in the treetops at La Forêt des Elfes (laforetdeselfes.com); or follow one of the region’s countless horse trails and cycles routes for a scenic adventure. Visit the rare critters at CERZA (en.cerza.com), a zoo with its own miniature safari train; get lost together in a labyrinth of maize outside Caen (labyrinthedecaen.com); or opt for whiteknuckle excitement at Festyland (festyland. com), the largest theme park in Normandy. If you’re looking for a seaside retreat, the region boasts miles of beautiful beaches and family-friendly resorts. For something offbeat, consider one of its quirkier accommodation options – do your best Tarzan impression in a tent pitched in a tree (woody-park.com/ tentes-suspendues), or keep an eye out for pirates from your perch in a 19th-century fort (fortducaplevi.com).

Normandy’s coastline has plenty of familyfriendly stops. Image by JaySi / Shutterstock

9. Skomer and Marloes Sands, Wales, UK

Still something of a secret to all but in-theknow locals, the rugged island of Skomer sits in a marine nature reserve off the Pembrokeshire coast on Wales’ southwestern tip and a close encounter with its inhabitants is sure to enthral young visitors. Half a million birds – puffins, guillemots, gannets, fulmars, cormorants, razorbills, kittiwakes and petrels included – rule the roost here, seemingly oblivious to human presence, while grey seals, porpoises and dolphins splash offshore. Be among the few to stay overnight (welshwildlife.org/overnightaccommodation-on-skomer) to have the island pretty much to yourself, then watch your kids’ faces as they listen to the chorus of 120,000 breeding pairs of Manx shearwaters returning to their burrows after dark. The Dale Princess (pembrokeshire-islands. co.uk) departs daily (except on Monday) from Martin’s Haven. Tie in a visit to the island with a day or two at Marloes Sands (nationaltrust. org.uk/marloes-sands), a mile-long sweep of beach that does a vanishing act at high tide.

10. Bohinj, Slovenia

Bohinj Lake is the equal of Slovenia’s betterknown Bled. Image by Andrew Mayovskyy / Shutterstock

Bohinj isn’t the lake most people think of when they think of Slovenia. Bled – complete with beautiful island church and towering castle – tends to hog the headlines. Yet families who venture further along the road to Bohinj find the perfect place for an active holiday. Lake Bohinj is framed by the Julian Alps, with mighty Triglav – Slovenia’s highest point – giving dreamy views. Energetic junior travellers will find kayaking, mountain biking, hiking to waterfalls, cable car rides and swimming here, with Euro-holiday staples of pizza and ice cream to go alongside parentpleasing local fare, all available at competitive prices compared with other alpine spots in Europe. As you’re in the mountains, visitors can expect cooler temperatures than on the coast, and the odd shower, but a fine indoor water park and the ease of day-tripping to Ljubljana means the odd rainy day is no problem.

Groningen

– just an

hour away and full of surprises, says Mike Pickup

Martini Tower*

T

HE first thing you notice are the bikes! The lack of hills in Holland makes it ideal for cycling and since Groningen is a major university city, this form of transport accounts for some 60% of all journeys. However, there are no lycra louts here, pedestrians, cars and bikes live happily alongside each other and despite the crowded city centre, they all seem to avoid each other with well-honed skills. Being a university city, Groningen has a lively atmosphere with an abundance of affordable eateries and bars offering a wide choice and ideal for visitors of all ages; closing time is not an issue. Having settled in to the Hotel de Ville in the centre of town, we walked through tempting shopping areas to the Restaurant de Pijp where we enjoyed a top class dinner. Then on to the Infoversum, a domeshaped cinema where you lie back in comfortable seats and look up to enjoy amazing movies displayed on the dome which is all around you, giving the impression that you are actually in the movie. At ten euros per person, it makes for a unique cinematographic experience. Our first evening ended with drinks in one of Europe’s largest pubs, holding up to 4,000 customers. The place was busy but the service efficient and friendly. Everyone in Groningen, it appears, speaks excellent English and is happy to chat. Next morning, after a typical breakfast of rolls, cold meats, cheeses and pastries, we set out to see what else the city has to offer. Groningen is surrounded by canals and easily managed on foot,

We were impressed with the peaceful atmosphere of London Southend Airport compared to the more familiar crowds and stress of Heathrow and Gatwick, a relaxing start for our one hour flight to Holland. Groningen’s equally small, quiet airport is just a short drive from the city centre.

An exhausting climb up the 260 steep winding stairs is rewarded with stunning views. For those with less stamina there is an excellent viewing area just under half way up. Nearby is St Geertruidsgashuis (St Gertude’s guest house). Built in 1405 to house visiting pilgrims, it is based around two peaceful courtyards, both of which are open to the public. It is now owned by a housing association and home to local residents. In total contrast is the Groningen museum. No old stuffy edifice, it was built in 1994 and designed by the Italian architect Mendini. Whilst

some exhibits are permanent, the museum houses a number of temporary exhibits, ensuring that there is always something new to see. The hugely popular David Bowie exhibition completes its worldwide tour in Groningen at the end of the year. The exhibition coincides with the Eurosonic Noordeslang, an annual four-day conference and festival showcasing European pop music. Close by the museum is the railway station. An imposing structure completed in 1896 and restored in 1999, it boasts an amazing papier mache ceiling. Other fascinating buildings include the Gold Office, dating back to 1635 and now a restaurant, and the modern Wall House, a wall with the rooms on the outside. A rather unusual modern work of art is a street urinal designed by Rem Koolhaas and Erwin Olaf and made of milky coloured glass with blue figures; it is put into storage in the cold winter months. We enjoyed a trip around the city by canal boat, some of the bridges so low that we had to duck down into the boat to avoid banging our Wall House*

helmsford, while enjoying its role as county town, has striven for greater recognition for many years and now boasts the breadth and depth of amenities that more than justify its elevation to city status as part of the Diamond Jubilee celebrations. Strategically placed by road and rail, it has become a commuter hotspot, attracting house-hunters from around Chelmsford and from much further afield. Homeowners cashing in on burgeoning property values in east London, and would-be buyers completely priced out of the capital, are looking eastwards for better value for money and a convenient journey. The half-hour rail commute from Chelmsford compares favourably to a Tube journey from zone 4 in Greater London. Karl Manning of agent Fenn Wright notes that as the town’s station is being redeveloped to accommodate more passengers and bigger trains, demand for homes close to the city centre is getting stronger. That prices are around £600,000 for a central, period, four-/five-bedroom home has not placated demand. “Within a square mile of the centre, homes are selling over guide price, and quickly,” says Manning. “We are having to host more and more open houses to cope.” It’s not only the established stock that is doing well, adds Rob Chapman, new homes manager at William H Brown for the Essex region. “In general, the new homes market is doing incredibly well at the moment,” he says. “The first half of the year has seen a significant rise in new homes sales, up 74% on 2014. We have specifically seen a sharp

In the city

City status has not only raised Chelmsford’s regional and national profile, it has caused a boom in demand from property buyers rise in sales in June this year which was assisted by a short supply of homes available in the second-hand market, leading buyers to turn to new homes as a convenient and available option. “Chelmsford’s recent elevation to city status has sparked a trend – an increase in the development of high-end one- and two-bedroom apartments. However, this is accompanied by a sharp increase in prices in the area as well.” The demand for new homes, in places such as the Beaulieu Park area, has also resulted from a lack of re-sale stock being brought to market, he says. Manning points to Chelmsford’s excellent schools as a huge draw for ambitious parents, but Chapman is seeing a wide

demographic coming through the door. “There doesn’t seem to be a specific type of person looking for new homes, nor are our customers looking for a specific type of property – the region is so diverse that we see a wide variety of prospective buyers, from commuters in the towns and cities to retirees in the more provincial and coastal areas of the Essex.” The momentum has been started in Chelmsford and Manning can only see it gathering pace in the coming years, with “the talk of a new station in Beaulieu Park, (pictured above), John Lewis coming in together with a brand new cinema, and new resi and commercial development at the old Duke’s nightclub site” just a few of the big changes the city can expect to see very soon.

New build option (from £240,000)

Re-sale option (c £850,000)

One of the most exciting new developments that William H Brown is offering to the market in the Chelmsford area is Danbury Palace. It is a conversion of the stately home to 13 luxury apartments, plus the conversion and new build elements of the coach house buildings to form six mews-style dwellings, and the erection of 26 high-end new build homes. All will benefit from a concierge service, tennis court and 8.5 acres of private grounds backing on to Danbury Lakes. The largest apartment in the palace exceeds 2,000 sq ft.

Fenn Wright is currently marketing this attractive five-bedroom home, set in 0.75 acres, located between Boreham and Hatfield Peverel. Two of the bedrooms are en suite and there is a delightful L-shaped orangery on the ground floor. The open-plan kitchen/breakfast room has a range of modern units and granite worktops. The grounds include a lovely landscaped garden, patio area, Jacuzzi and covered barbecue area to the rear and provide plenty of parking at the front of the house, which also has a double garage.

urchasers and residents at CALA Homes’ exclusive Trueloves Grange development will be given a selection of wildlife habitat for birds, insects and hedgehogs to attract wildlife to their new gardens in support of the RSPB’s Give Nature a Home campaign. Each kit includes two bird nest boxes, a ladybird bug house and a hodgitat hedgehog shelter, all made from regulated timber. Michelle Relton, sales manager for CALA Homes says: “It’s so important to give nature a helping hand when we can, so we want to do our bit to help take care of local wildlife and make it fun at the same time.” The RSPB campaign urges residents to provide a place for wildlife in their gardens and outside spaces. Whether it’s installing habitats like bug boxes, hedgehog homes and nest boxes, or planting wildflowers – little actions can make a massive difference.

RSPB’s top tips for encouraging wildlife • Give the mower a rest - The flowering plants that bugs and beasts love to hide in will benefit and longer grass won’t dry out so quickly • Grow flowering plants - Pollinating insects will be attracted by planting a variety of traditional plants such as cornflowers, foxgloves, honeysuckle, guelder rose and English lavender • Build a bug hotel - A wildlife stack – made from crates, canes, newspaper, and plant pots provides insects with somewhere to live • Create nature corridors - Plant a mix of trees and flowers on your doorstep to create corridors for wildlife to move and get from place to place • Add some water - A water feature with different depths is great for wildlife. Shallow areas are used by bathing and drinking birds, dragonflies and amphibians to lay eggs. Deeper areas help aquatic insects survive cold spells and are good for newts

or many coming up to retirement age, the decision to sell the family home and be the first person to move into brand new retirement development 50 miles away would be a daunting task.

However, for one former plucky land girl, it was a decision which has given her a whole new lease of life. Making sure 1 your home is safe for the summer holidays

W

ith the summer approaching, most people will be off abroad or around the UK to take a week or two off, says property expert Kate Faulkner. And it’s important to enjoy your time away without any worries or fears of anyone breaking into your home and leaving a mess for you to clear up when you get back.

There are five really easy ways to protect your home from unwanted visitors... 1. Make sure you put away ladders It’s easy to leave things out which we’d never think could be used to help break into our home, but things like ladders, anything which could be used to prize open doors or throw through windows is essential to make sure your property remains safe. 2. Put your post on hold If you have good neighbours, they may take your post in or put it through your letter box, but if you don’t know then too well, the Post Office run a great service called KeepSafe. It does take five days to set up, but can help prevent identity fraud and they deliver everything to you the day after you return. 3. Night lights and a radio There are some great timers you can use which automatically switch lights on and off and even a radio while you are away. This is great deterrent for burglars – they won’t want to take the risk. I make sure I have lights switching on and off at night even when I’m in the house too so they don’t just come on when I’m away.

2

3

4. Don’t advertise you are away! This is really hard not to do if you enjoy posting on social media, but the fact remains that telling everyone with access to your accounts you are away a good idea as it can easily tip people off that you aren’t in. 5. Think about what you leave on and off Depending on how long you are away for, it might be worth turning off the gas and water and making sure most electric sockets are off too, just in case. Talk to your plumber if you are unsure of how to turn things off and whether it’s a good idea. Finally, if you are away for more than 30 days, check your insurance – not all policies will cover your property if you are away for that length of time. LOTS of properties going under the hammer in Clive Emson’s July Auction Britain’s top land and property auctioneers forthcoming auction takes place on July 22. LOT 1

LOT 2

LAND NEXT TO FARM UP FOR AUCTION A freehold parcel of land at South Ockendon is going up for auction with a guide price of £15,000£20,000. The 0.04 hectare (0.09 acre) plot adjoining Ponds Farm on Purfleet Road and close to the A13 is currently used as a storage yard. It is among the Essex and North and East London lots listed for sale by the regional land and property auctioneers Clive Emson this month (July). Paul Bridgeman, auctioneer and former president of the National Association of Auctioneers and Valuers, said: “This land is likely to interest anyone who can see the potential in possibly obtaining planning consent in the future. “Land is always popular at auction. These plots may be used for recreational and amenity purposes or the new owner may have an alternative use in mind.” Last month’s round of five Clive Emson auctions across southern England, of which the Channels Golf Club was one, raised £21m, with an 83% success rate. Paul added: “It was our best June auction series since the heady days of 2006 and comes on the back of political stability, record-low borrowing costs and an improving economy. “The shortage of new homes and the increased demand for rented property is fuelling demand - the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors predicts that average house prices will rise by 25% over the next five years.” The independent company holds eight rounds of auctions at five locations from Essex to Cornwall on consecutive days every six weeks, this time with a total of 145 lots. Starting at 11am, the fourth of Clive Emson’s regional Essex and North & East London auctions in 2015 takes place at the Channels Golf Club, Little Waltham, Chelmsford, on Wednesday, July 22.

It is among the Essex and North and East London lots listed for sale by the regional land and property auctioneers Clive Emson this month (July). Paul Bridgeman, auctioneer and former president of the National Association of Auctioneers and Valuers, said: “I am expecting a lot of interest for this flat in such a popular area.” The flat has the remainder of a 125-year lease from 2002.

A hound night’s sleep Richenda Oldham goes in search of canine comfort and finds there are some seriously luxurious beds out there for discerning dogs...

I

f you were to spend around 12-14 hours each day sleeping, you’d make sure you chose a comfortable bed, wouldn’t you? Well, that’s how long dogs spend actually asleep. For 30% of the day they are awake, but inactive, which leaves just 20% to run around and exercise. So it makes sense to improve the quality of a dog’s life by providing them with the best possible bed, based on the simple (but commonsense) principles of warmth and softness. There are an unbelievable number of different types of dog bed on the market, from pads and mattresses to solid foam ‘nest’ style beds or even sofas, so it’s a good idea to

evaluate your dog and his needs first before going shopping. Even if your dog is allowed to share your chairs and bed, there will be times when you won’t want him to, but if he has a great bed of his own, he might actually prefer to sleep there... A simple checklist could be: • Breed • Size • Age • Habits

CLEANLINESS Unless you are prepared to buy a new dog bed every time your pet’s bed becomes too dirty and smelly to bear, then washability has to be top of a list of must-have dog bed

features. It’s also important to control fleas by keeping the bed clean. Check to see whether a dog bed is machine washable, or at the very least if its cover can be washed.

DESIGN It’s important that you choose a style that suits your dog. It’s not just a simple case of big bed for big dog and small bed for small dog. Some dogs like to curl up tight in round beds with raised ‘doughnut’ sides, which makes them feel secure, while others like to stretch out, in which case a mattress or pillow design is a better choice. Other dogs like to sleep under a blanket, in which case a ‘cave’ bed

SNUG AS A BUG: for dogs who love to sleep under a cover then a bed with a cosy pocket to burrow under is ideal, Charley Chau snuggle bed, £65, www.charleychau.com

(with a cover that is already attached) is ideal as it allows the dog to burrow beneath the cover. For old dogs with stiff joints, a wellpadded bed that is easy to climb in and out of is essential, while for a dog that feels the cold, a raised bed (off the floor and out of draughts) with high sides, will help keep it warm. For anyone tempted by a ‘designer’ sofa style bed, which will generally have a solid frame, covered in either leather, or fabric, make sure that your dog isn’t a serial chewer. The same applies to rattan beds, which are irresistible to some dogs.

There are lots out there in the market but these are some of my favourites - and if you take

The summer opens up a host of potential activities you can get into that seem much more appealing now than in cold winter weather, but how can you maximise your

Superfoodist blood sugar levels means less cravings and an increased felling of fullness. Chia Seeds swell slightly when added to liquid which makes you feel fuller for longer. Spirulina also promotes healthy digestion which assists with optimum fat metabolism. This combo is my favourite to help clients reach their desired weight - and to help them keep it off.

Anti Ageing Powerhouse:

CACAO, BLUEBERRY AND RASPBERRY These colourful super antioxidants help to boost immunity and help the body to protect and repair itself.

They are rich in bioflavonoids, anthocyanidins and resveratrol - these powerful anti ageing phytonutrients can help with cardio vascular health and even diabetes. They protect the length of your telomeres which are small tips at the ends of your chromosomes that shorten as the body ages. The good news is that telomeres that are longer and healthier lead to a longer healthy life. The pigments in the berries increase antioxidant levels and combine perfectly with cacao. Cacao ( unadulterated cocoa ) protects against toxins and repairs the damage caused by free radicals.

SPIRULINA, WHEATGRASS AND MACA Combine Spirulina, Maca and

Wheat Grass to create a great preexercise natural energy drink – a nutrient dense natural energy drink sugar and artificial sweetener free. This blend promotes lean muscle mass after exercise which further assists in fat metabolism and toning. Spirulina and Wheatgrass both contain high levels magnesium which boosts energy production at a cellular level.

BARLEY GRASS, TUMERIC AND ALOE VERA This blend is perfect to help with digestive disorders. It will help to

reduce bloating, inflammation and digestive discomfort. All that you need to do is take half a teaspoon of Barley Grass and Turmeric powder and 5mls of Aloe Vera Juice and add it to your daily smoothie. This potent superfood combination is antiviral, antimicrobial, anti fungal and antibacterial. The Turmeric is high in curcumin which is a powerful anti oxidant has been shown to work as a powerful anti-inflammatory in the body.

BARLEY GRASS AND SPIRULINA These four supergreens help to alkalise, cleanse and naturally detox your system – perfect if you’re body is overly acidic and to decrease inflammation. Start off with a quarter of a teaspoon of each superfood or buy a blend that contain all four. These supergreens are commonly used to assist with heavy metal detox and toxin reduction. They are rich in enzymes that promote optimum digestion and elimination. I recommend these four as they will alkalise, cleanse and detox whilst also boosting immune function and energy production. You are much better off reloading on protein after you’re done.” “Lower your core temperature before working by drinking ice based drinks around an hour before exercise or having an ice cold bath or shower. “Don’t workout between 12 and 4pm - The midday sun is obviously when temperatures and UV exposure are at their highest points so try to avoid this time of the day to work out in.”” “If you are going to do outdoor

training, find a more shaded area so that you are not directly in the sun for your whole workout. Also don’t push yourself to fatigue. Enjoy the workout without over doing it. You could of course change up your workouts and go for a swim instead when it is particularly hot!” “And finally, don’t forget sunscreen. Best foot If you love a nice pair of sandals - we have just the footwear for you.

S Sisters and creators of Palmaira sandals, Tracy and Lisa

ISTERS Tracy and Lisa Bugg from Wansted are the creators of Palmaira sandals, made from beautifully soft leather and inspired by traditional Menorcan avarcas, which they both wore growing up. Having often been complimented on their sandals, it seemed like a natural progression for them to collaborate with the local artisans in Lisa’s fiance David’s hometown of Es Migjorn Gran in Menorca, and bring their own version of the traditional avarca back to the East-End of London. Hailing from fashion and promotional backgrounds, the pair sourced leathers from across Spain and Italy to give their avarcas a special twist, now all they needed was somewhere to sell them! The duo decided to go back to

their roots and start trading at Spitalfields Market in 2013. The sister’s beloved Grandad, was a Fruit and Veg wholesale trader at Spitalfields way back when. Sadly, he passed away in 2011, so he never knew about them being a part of the new market there, but every Friday when they open for business, they feel a little bit closer to him.

The current Palmaira collection consists of 40-50 different styles for women and 15 for children, and four for men. To keep up with the catwalk trends Tracy and Lisa have meetings throughout the year with a range of leather suppliers as well as design meetings with their pattern cutter and trend forecaster.

Fashion for summer The Long and the Short of it… From hot pants to high-waisted, batty riders to Bermudas; shorts are THE must have item for Summer. forward However their designs have always been close to the heart. “We always go on our gut instinct. We believe in designing what we want to wear ourselves so the collections and colours are based on what we love. We think that this personal touch is what makes our sandals so special,” says Tracy.” With the success of the sandals, Tracy and Lisa will be expanding the brand and launching a range of bags to compliment the Palmaira collection this Autumn. “The great thing about Palmaira sandals is that they are so versatile – both in their style and the leathers they’re available in. The Sandy Tan or Natural Palmairas look just as good worn with cut-offs as they do with floaty dresses. The glitter options can be worn paired with jeans, or even in the evenings

for a touch of sunset sparkle! We are loving the neon pink at the moment – they look great with tanned legs for a real colour pop,” adds Lisa.

You can buy the sandals online from palmairasandals.com or by visiting the wonderful Spitalfields E1 Market on Fridays. Prices for the collection range from £40 for adults and £28 for children.

Beauty - Product of the week Olverum Bath Oil Recreating the Original Spa Experience.

T

HE late 1920s saw Franz Otto Klein, a wine merchant from the Mosel Valley, making regular visits to his favourite spa in the mountains as was, and is, the tradition for many in Germany. Here, he was treated with a therapeutic bath oil with a wonderful captivating aroma and almost magical therapeutic properties. One year, to his dismay, he was told the bath oil was no longer available so, on his return home to Traben-Trarbach on the banks of the Mosel River, he resolved to source and blend the finest essential oils in an effort to recreate the much-prized ethereal oil.

In 1931, after two years of tireless experimentation, he arrived at a formulation of such quality that it surpassed even that of the oil he had tried to emulate. He sent the few bottles he had created to close friends and family as Christmas gifts that year and by the following Easter they were clamouring for more. And so it was that small scale production of Olverum Bath Oil began. Soon, however, public demand simply from word of mouth meant production had to increase. Drastically. It was a seemingly unstoppable process, only stopped in fact by the outbreak of war (during which time the precious formula for Olverum was buried

for safe keeping). Then in 1948, Franz O. Klein II, son of the inventor, dedicated himself to promoting the benefits of his father’s creation to the world. The rest is bathtime history.

Tried & Tested

Olverum Bath Oil is the most wonderful product. Just a few drops in your bath are needed. If you love the citrusy, uplifting fragrance when you walk into a spa, this gorgeous scent will now be wafting around your own home. Unwind from the stresses of everyday life as you enjoy a soak in the tub. The warm water infused with the silky, luxurious aromatic blend of essential oils will

gradually moisturise and revitalise your skin, leaving it beautifully soft. Stockists include Fenwicks and Harvey Nichols however you can also buy online too www.olverum.com. 125ml bottle, £23.50 and 200ml bottle, £36.95.

Gardens Five great gardens LIFESTYLE

to visit in Essex

1.

- “One of the most important post-war gardens in the country - where sculpture and plants complement each other perfectly,” was how BBC Gardener’s World described the garden designed by Sir Frederick Gibberd in Harlow. Horticulturalists will adore the formal terraces, lawns, pools and avenues, romantic woodland glades and multitude of streams which characterise the shady lower areas of the Garden. Art lovers will be drawn to the extensive collection of modern sculpture and architectural pieces that Sir Frederick and Lady Gibberd acquired over their lifetime. Works by celebrated artists including August Rodin, Dame Barbara Hepworth, Sir Henry Moore and Dame Elizabeth Frink can be seen, along with a growing number of pieces by young British artists.

2.

– Marks Hall Garden and Arboretum at Coggleshall is a tree collection from across the world set in more than 200 acres of historic landscape providing interest and enjoyment throughout the year. Follow the paths through the Arboretum, where you can see beautiful vistas and a host of exotic trees. Highlights include

Ingatestone Hall

the Millennium Walk, designed for structure, colour and scent on the shortest days of the year; the largest planting in Europe of Wollemi Pine and the inspired combination of traditional and contemporary planting in the 18th Century Walled Garden. The double border is the longest in East Anglia.

3

- RHS Garden Hyde Hall in Rettendon enjoys panoramic views across the rolling countryside, with vast, open skies overhead. The garden itself is composed of an eclectic variety of horticultural

4.

- For enthusiastic gardeners looking for inspiration and indeed, plants, the Beth Chatto Gardens near Elmstead Market are a must. Covering 6 acres, these beautiful gardens have become world famous. Creative use of the space has seen Beth and her team transform something of a wasteland into both a visitor attraction and important resource. There are four principal gardens across the site; scree, gravel, woodland and water all with lush leafy plantings. The adjoining nursery and shop means that visitors can recreate aspects of the garden back home, or learn from her books and writings. RHS Garden Hyde Hall

5.

– Cressing Temple Barn . Historically the most important – and dimensionally the largest – of the Knights Templar’s Essex landholdings, Cressing Temple is a fascinating medieval moated farmstead boasting the oldest recorded timber-framed barn in the world. Visitors can discover an interesting range of rural barns, and admire a Tudor herb garden and a newly created 16th century paradise garden, all set in glorious countryside between Witham and Braintree. UST follow these top tips and you can have a mini garden makeover in minutes ...

Choose the right pot Make sure your container has a hole in the bottom to allow good water drainage. If you are using terracotta pots then they should be frost resistant – so you don’t have to bring them in during the winter months to avoid weather damage. Choose the right compost Do not use soil from your garden. You can get good potting compost from any garden centre, and one that has slow release plant feed incorporated is a good choice for pots as plants in containers need regular feeding. Choose the right plants. You can grow most plants in containers, even vegetables. You just need to factor in whether they are going to be in full sun all day or be in a more shady area of your garden. Plants like roses and sweet peas are sun lovers whereas petunias and salvia can take a bit of shade - so it’s best to use one type of plant per pot. Planting the pots If your containers are large then place them where they will eventually go before you fill them with compost and plants as they may be too heavy to move after. Fill the container with soil, so the base of the plant (where the stem starts) is about 2cm from the top of the pot. Remove the plant from its nursery container and place in your pot then carefully fill in with

potting compost and pat down gently. Watering Keep the soil moist – in the summer months this may mean having to water daily or at least twice a week - but don’t let pots sit in water as this can cause the plant roots to rot. The Inspire range of robust glazed and part glazed terracotta pots in charcoal, blue, green and white - decorated with the National Trust oak leaf and inscribed with the words BeautyInspire-Nourish-Grow - are a must have this Summer. All pots are guaranteed frost proof and the designs and colours reflect the National Trust’s ethos that everyone needs beautiful views and green spaces to be inspired, feel nourished and to grow. Available in four sizes RRP from £5.99 up to £39.99 National Trust garden planters are available in garden centres and nurseries around the UK. For stockists go to www. woodlodge.co.uk

Russell Grant’s Weekly Horoscopes ARIES March 21st - April 20th

Use any extra cash that comes your way to make some household repairs. If you want to relocate, this would be a great time to do so. You could get an excellent rate on a mortgage from a bank or lending institution. There’s also a chance a generous relative will give you the money for a down payment. Having a comfortable home life can enhance your creativity. Make a studio where you can freely write, paint or play music. Everyone needs time to play, even adults.

Developing your creative talent should be your first priority. You’ve been diligent about fulfilling responsibilities to your family and fellow workers. Now it’s time to put your needs first. If this means handing some jobs to relatives, so be it. You shouldn’t be expected to do all the work without any reward. A moneymaking opportunity will come as a result of your artistic pursuits. You will find getting paid to make things that are both useful and beautiful will be very empowering.

LIBRA September 24th - October 23rd

Working with a tight budget could turn out to be an enjoyable challenge. You’re very good at finding quality items for bargain basement prices. Making ends meet will try your ingenuity but you have some great ideas and you shouldn’t be afraid to give them a try. Whether you’re saving to pay bills, pay for a holiday or treat yourself to something special it won’t be long before you reach your target and you will have learned something very important about yourself along the way.

CAPRICORN December 22nd - January 20th

TAURUS April 21st - May 21st

LEO July 24th - August 23rd

Establishing a stable home life is important to you. You’re part of a vibrant social scene. Spending time with friends is fun, but you need a place where you can rest and relax after painting the town red. If you’re living or working with people who fight like cats and dogs, it may be time to make a decisive move. Fortunately, you have the capacity to support yourself. Making it on your own will be a welcome challenge. You’ll enjoy a home you can decorate to your own taste.

SCORPIO October 24th - November 22nd

You will be asked to take over a difficult task from someone who can’t quite handle it. People have faith in your knowledge and experience. Helping newcomers learn the ropes will be challenging, but it will be something you’ll enjoy. You have very special abilities that will make things much easier for everyone around you, but sometimes you don’t recognise or appreciate them. By supporting people with your brand of thoughtful helpfulness you can make your world a better place.

AQUARIUS January 21st - February 19th

GEMINI May 22nd - June 21st

VIRGO August 24th - September 23rd

SAGITTARIUS November 23rd - December 21st PISCES February 20th - March 20th

A strong, committed relationship allows you to take some risks so why not plan to do something or go somewhere that past situations and circumstances have forced to stand in line. There are bound to be some people who will think you have gone off your rocker and shouldn’t waste your time and money trying to recapture times gone by. Don’t give them a second thought. Do what brings you pleasure. You deserve this opportunity so make the most of it. You’ve always been a dynamo and when you channel your energy into a demanding project you’ll get the job done in record time. Someone who is impressed by your ability will offer you a steady job. This position may involve extensive travel to far flung places. Getting paid to visit different cities will be an answer to a prayer. You’re not the type who can thrive in a cubicle. Frequent changes of scenery will keep you motivated. Be open to switching fields.

CANCER June 22nd - July 23rd

Finding a use for your hard earned knowledge is important. Think about working as a teacher or tutor. You’ve always been an excellent student. Helping people who have difficulty mastering subjects will give you a new lease on life. Students appreciate your low key approach to work. Although you’re exacting, you let them develop at their own pace. Instead of creating a high pressured learning environment, you will cultivate a calm, reassuring ambiance that helps everyone.

Your refusal to be pigeonholed opens a door to a host of opportunities. Whenever you get a chance to expand your skills, you take it. This makes you a versatile and valuable member of any team. Your greatest challenge is finding intellectually stimulating work that is both satisfying and profitable. It’s important to be paid what you are worth. This can be difficult because you don’t specialise in any particular area. Therefore, you have to negotiate for more money.

It is important to be receptive to new ideas and influences. The more flexible you are, the more successful you’ll become. This can be difficult for a traditionalist like you. Look at the people in your life as guides and advisers. Anyone who has an impressive skills or knowledge base can help you. Put your ego aside for the sake of personal growth. Being open minded will improve both your personal and professional relationships. A romance will become much more profound.

Your professional ambitions can be met, so long as you are willing to ask for help. A successful person in your desired industry can give you valuable advice. Take their advice when they invite you to change your approach. Learning different ways of doing things will be difficult at first, but you’ll eventually get the hang of things. At that point, you’ll notice a dramatic increase in productivity and your own confidence and determination will also be on the rise. Your patience and forbearance is paying off handsomely. A creative project that has taken a lot of time and energy is about to bear fruit. You should be justifiably proud of your progress. Alternatively a relationship that has had its ups and downs will enter into a more stable and mutually supportive period and once again it is down to your brand of quiet persistence and no nonsense common sense. Give yourself a pat on the back for being so clever and plan a small celebration.

Animal Magic in Essex

All creatures great & small

W

HETHER it’s a visit to a farm park, zoo or nature reserve, Essex has a wealth of award-winning places to visit. Traditionally, when you think of a rich variety of habitats; sun-dappled ancient woodland, windswept salt marshes, idyllic meadows and bucolic rivers, Essex falls some way short of the top of most people’s lists. Yet this beautiful county richly rewards those who prefer to take a walk on the wild side. Rainham Marshes, in the south of the county, has been nominated for the accolade of Britain’s Favourite Nature Reserve. The RSPB-run ancient landscape is located amongst urban surroundings bordering Greater London and is a haven for wading birds. As you follow the Thames Estuary heading back out towards the open sea off Southend, there are burgeoning seal colonies just off the shore of historic Leigh-on-Sea. Inland, near the heart of the county, you’ll find three terrific destinations; Marsh Farm, Tropical Wings and Hanningfield Reservoir. Marsh Farm promises acres of magical fun for all the family, with a wide variety of activities available every

day. From tractor rides to pony grooming, watching birds of prey demonstrations to meeting all the amazing birds and animals themselves, this is a wonderful place to interact with nature. A short drive away – and still in South Woodham Ferrers – is Tropical Wings. Not only does the family-run zoo have one of the finest tropical houses in the UK, filled with butterflies, but it is also home to beautiful, exotic creatures such as Ring-tailed Lemurs, Porcupines, Capybaras and Parrots. For lovers of more traditional country pursuits, Hanningfield Reservoir is an ideal place to stretch your legs and go for a ramble with the dog, or forget your cares with a spot of fishing. Whether you’re a seasoned angler or a complete beginner, the fishing lodge will welcome you and help you while away the hours on the banks or in boat enjoying some of the best trout fishing in England. Take a ferry from the picturesque town of Burnham on Crouch – just fifteen minutes’ drive from South Woodham Ferrers – to the RSPB’s Wallasea Island reserve. This landmark conservation project – the largest of its kind ever undertaken in Britain and Europe - has painstakingly returned farmland into a mosaic of mudflats and saltmarsh, unseen for hundreds of years. In turn, this has created a true haven for wildlife and keen birders alike. Star species

Getting upclose to the pigs at Marsh Farm

include Spoonbills, Redshanks, Avocets, Black-tailed Godwits and increasingly large flocks of Brent geese. Your little monkeys will go wild at the prospect of a trip to Colchester Zoo. Rated as one of the top twenty in the world, it is a sanctuary for a number of endangered and vulnerable species; including leopards, tigers and lions, bears, Komodo dragons, noble orangutans and stunningly cute Red Pandas. You can also test your bird-spotting and botany skills in Essex’s many country parks dotted across the county. Whether you’re into big cats or meerkats, farmers with llamas, or seals with appeal, Essex is perfect for lovers of all creatures great and small. More details visit www.visitessex.com

Le Mans success for JD Classics MALDON-based JD Classics’ unstoppable ex-Fangio C-Type took home a class win at Le Mans Legend this year, followed swiftly by the team’s Jaguar T33 in second place. Taking its 22nd award in 25 races, the team’s C-Type is unrivalled in historic racing events today. Le Mans Legend organisers this year broadened the event’s eligibility criteria, allowing high-powered Ford GT40s and Cobras to compete. Nevertheless, JD Classics’ entries each put in impressive qualifying performances, with the Costin Lister, driven by JD Classics’ own racing driver Chris Ward sitting eighth in a field of 62. Not far behind was the team’s Lightweight E-Type driven by Steve Soper, which qualified in 12th place, followed by the ex-Fangio C-Type with John Young at the wheel and the Cooper T33 driven by JD Classics’ Managing Director Derek Hood. Wil Arif in the team’s XK120 rounded out a strong qualifying performance. Following Thursday’s qualifying, the JD Classics Competition Department set about preparing all of its cars for the race, which kicked off on Saturday morning. Three GT40s led the pack as the race got underway with a rolling start, and Chris Ward drove the Lister Costin brilliantly up to fifth place, despite being down on power compared with the cars ahead. An issue with the car saw the Lister

Costin fall back down the field while the other JD Classics’ entries battled hard in the top half of a competitive pack. After four laps, JD Classics had performed the mandatory minute-long pit stop on all their entries, leaving them to race to the finish line. It was the Lightweight E-Type that came home first for JD Classics, rounding out a top 10 that included seven of the much more powerful GT40s and Cobras. The ex-Fangio C-Type topped its class with the Cooper T33 coming in just behind, giving JD Classics an incredible one-two finish in the 1949-

1954 class. It’s the latest in a series of impressive finishes for JD Classics this year, including a win for its 1974 Ford Cologne Capri at Spa Classic. JD Classics Managing Director Derek Hood said: “This year’s Le Mans Legend field was undoubtedly the toughest it’s ever been, so our C-Type and Cooper T33 completing a class onetwo finish is something we’re extremely proud of. “It also cements our ex-Fangio C-Type as the most successful of its kind in historic racing today – and that’s down to the world-class engineers we’ve got in our Competition Department.”

130,000 SUVs sold since we first launched Santa Fe in 2001. “The outgoing model, ix35, is our second best-seller in the UK so far this year which just proves how critical this sector is for our brand. “Tucson will look to

develop this success, thanks to its striking design and the enhanced level of technology and equipment it offers our customers.” For further information on the all-new Tucson, visit www.hyundaimedia-tucson. co.uk

Spiritual successor to the Subaru Legacy, the new Levorg GT

Subaru confirm Levorg for UK SUBARU has confirmed the new Levorg sport tourer will go on sale in the UK in September. The new model, which made its European debut at the Geneva Motor Show in March, will be called Levorg GT in the UK. The new car is being seen as the spiritual successor to the fourth generation Legacy Tourer (2003-2008) which became a firm favourite among Subaru owners. The packaging of the new Levorg means that while it has similar exterior dimensions to the Legacy, it will have much more interior space. Subaru’s trade-mark Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive will of course feature, along with an all new 170 PS 1.6 litre DIT Boxer petrol engine.

The new engine will be combined with the latest version of Subaru’s highly advanced 6-speed Lineartronic transmission. The Subaru Levorg GT will also feature some of the latest passive and active safety technology, including blind spot detection and rear vehicle alert. New Viva scores on comfort and value A FAMILIAR name returns to the Vauxhall range of cars with the new Viva. A popular model during the 60s and 70s, this new incarnation is thoroughly modern in its looks and just like its predecessor is practical, well equipped and competitively priced. Vauxhall have even used the same two trim levels as the original car, with SE and SL derivatives encompassing four models and for convenience is only available as a five-door hatchback. SE starts the range with a price of £7,995, with the range topping-out at £9,495 for the SL. In between a SE Air con adds £485 to the price and an SE ecoFLEX model at £8,170 drops the Co2 emissions to 99g/km, making it car tax free, and combined fuel consumption of 65.7mpg by adding a front lip spoiler, extended rear spoiler and ultra-low rolling resistance tyres. Other models have a CO2 figure of 104g/km and combined mpg figure of 62.8.

Power comes from a three cylinder 1.0-litre petrol engine which produces 75PS mated to a five-speed manual gearbox, with an Easytronic automated manual version to follow in January 2016. Viva joins Vauxhall growing range of small-car family, which already includes the ADAM and Corsa, and competes in the A-segment against the Volkswagen Up, Toyota Aygo, Peugeot 108 and Citroen C1. Both Viva trim levels feature a high level of standard equipment with powered assisted steering with City Mode, driver’s seat height adjustment, tyre pressure monitoring system, electric front windows, multi function trip computer, remote central locking, cruise control with

comfortable even on the roughest of roads this country has to offer. The 1.0-litre, at times a bit vocal due to its three-cylinder engine, bustles the car along and over a 100 mile driving route, proved itself to be a very enjoyable car to be in. With a 0-60 time of 13.1 seconds, it won’t win in the speed stakes but this is not what the Viva is all about. Vauxhall predict that 90% of Viva sales will be in the retail sector, with two age groups of 50+ buyers and sub 25-year-olds accounting for the majority of sales. With this in mind the Viva will be available on a Personal Contract Purchase (PCP), which is becoming increasingly popular way to purchase a new car. On the connectivity front, from early 2016 the Viva will have access to both IntelilLink and Vauxhall’s On Star infotainment and safety systems.

How it all began, the first Vauxhall Viva

InteliLink allows seamless integration of both Apple and Android devices, including full compatibility with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. On Star will allows the Viva to become a Wi-Fi hotspot, enabling up to seven devices to be connected to the car network, link up to emergency services, roadside recovery and allow smartphone remote control. It will be standard on the SL trim and an option on the SE. I must say that in a very

short time I really warmed to the new Viva. Praise must be given to the ride which is the most comfortable in this A-segment category. Vauxhall certainly have done a great job in tuning it to UK roads, but it equally shines as a no-nonsense car that is well built, has plenty of standard equipment, is cheap to buy, run and insure (even the top SL model is only Group 4) and will appeal to all generations of buyers wanting easy-life motoring.

Clifford stars in top of the table clash against Colchester

A

TREMENDOUS performance from James Clifford helped the first team to win a crucial top of the table clash with Colchester. Overall, though it was a mixed weekend with four defeats and only three victories. The spin pairing of Clifford and Karamat Ali enabled Chelmsford to bowl Colchester out for 180. Robb (74) had given the innings a huge amount of impetus before the change of pace worked its magic. Dan Hagen and Aaron Beard played solidly before Clifford finished things off for a three-wicket victory in spite of five wickets from Ollie Bocking. A very good chase from the second team completed the double over Colchester. Barnett (86), Crace (73) and Lovejoy (55) had put the Chelmsford bowlers to the sword in totalling 291 for six. Gary Chidley and Brad Green set up the Chelmsford innings and quick runs from Rob Hayto and Lee Cranmer carried them home with five balls to spare. The table was turned upside down as the previously table-topping third team went down to abject defeat at Brentwood who had been bottom. Walford (56) had been the mainstay of Brentwood’s 186 for nine, a score that should have been easily achievable. No one played a major innings though and a series of poor dismissals led to a 30 run defeat. The fourth team continued their excellent

recent run with a win over Ilford. There were a couple of wickets apiece from Harry Arnold and Rory Skepelhorn whilst the experienced pair of Neil Raisborough and Matt Poole (3-10) tied up one end as Ilford were bowled out for 149. Phil Arnold (42) top scored in the match and Harry Arnold (21) completed the chase for a four-wicket win. Despite runs from Barry Clayden (66), Jack Campion (62) and Alistair Baldwin (45), the fifths were well beaten. D. Ranns (3-23) bowled well for Brentwood but Chelmsford would have expected their score of 232 to be competitive. Unfortunately for them it was not and the visitors cruised to victory just three wickets down; Maxwell (81) and Brailey (82) breaking the back of the target. There was also defeat for the sixth team against Rankins. Ben Turner and Ed Cole played pretty well with the bat and Will Boyden impressed with the ball but Rankins superior experience told. The under-16 Matchplay side were well beaten by Woodford Wells. Having done pretty well in the field to restrict the score to 160, they were bowled out for just 90. Ashraf (56) rescued the Woodford Wells innings after spinners Harry Green (3-14) and Shahid (2-12) had done a great deal of damage. A three wicket burst from Sohoye undermined Chelmsford’s innings and they never really recovered.

Hot Shots, left to right, Trevor Pedley, lead Marina Thorne and skip Geoff Byatt

Lawn bowls trio are real Hot Shots THREE players from Brentwood Bowling Club are celebrating after scoring a Hot Shot (the maximum possible shots) during a triples game. It happened during a friendly match at Clacton recently when Marina Thorne, Trevor Pedley and skip Geoff Byatt rolled all nine woods into the count. The trio are now eligible to join the ranks of the elite Hot Shots Club which is managed by Bowls International magazine and they qualify for individual certificates and badges to mark this rare achievement. The trip to the seaside also proved a good day for Brentwood ladies’ captain Margaret Rayment and fellow team players Paul Harrison and Kath Jolly who beat their opposition by 15 shots to earn their club’s top rink prizes.

Six rinks were in play and Brentwood won on five, finishing 32 shots ahead on 124. Brentwood: Marina Thorne, Trevor Pedley and Geoff Byatt; Kath Jolly, Paul Harrison and Margaret Rayment; Ken Collins, Marje Shute and Ron Jolly; Rose Collins, Cliff Jaycock and Derek Robinson; Pam Robinson, Ann Powell and Richard Rose; Les Powell, Brian Martin and Maureen Jaycock. n Brentwood Bowling Club is inviting would-be bowlers to try their hand at the sport at a summer open day at King George’s Playing Fields from 10am on Saturday, August 1. Visitors will be able to learn the basics from experienced players, and enjoy refreshments in the pavilion. Les Powell

(Chelmsford won by 3 wickets) Shepherd Neame Essex League Premier Division Played at Castle Park

CHELMSFORD’S run of tough fixtures continued with a trip to Colchester & East Essex, a side who had moved up to second in the league. After winning the toss and electing to bowl, Sam Cook struck in the first over again to remove the dangerous Russell. The second wicket pairing elected to respond by going on the attack, scoring at a quick rate. Outstanding fielding from James Clifford provided the breakthrough, with a diving stop leading to both batsman at the same end and Bush (18) was run out. The introduction of spin brought immediate rewards, with James Clifford removing Robb (74) and Karamat Ali having Joe Austin (33) caught at slip by Nick Prowting. The innings rather petered out to 180 all out. Clifford returned five for 31 and Ali three for 30, an outstanding result given the start that Colchester had made. Chelmsford faced the difficult task of batting for a 40 minute session before the break. This had the desired

effect for Colchester, as they were able to take two early wickets. Aaron Beard and Dan Hagen were able to negotiate the rest of the session though, with the innings poised nicely at 51 for two from 12 overs. With the score just over 100 and the chase looking strong, Beard fell for a responsible 34. Hagen fell for 52 to the returning Bocking (5-29), with both Chris Prowting (20) and Bailey (16) appearing comfortable before falling to the same bowler. With just 20 to win, James Clifford took it upon himself to finish it in style, hitting a succession of boundaries to complete a three-wicket win with six overs to spare. 2ND TEAM Colchester & East Essex 291-6 Chelmsford 292-6

(Chelmsford won by 4 wickets) Shepherd Neame Essex League Premier Division Played at Chelmer Park

CHELMSFORD ultimately claimed victory with a thrilling run chase of a challenging target after another somewhat disappointing bowling performance in the first innings. Colchester started positively and reached 63 without loss in 13 overs but then lost two wickets in quick succession. A further wicket fell at

89, thanks to a smart direct-hit run out from Lee Cranmer, but then opener Barnett (86) and Crace (73) shared a stand of 87 in 12 overs. Chelmsford’s bowling attack wilted in the warm conditions as Colchester piled on the runs as Lovejoy (55no) replaced Barnett and 100 runs flowed off the last 10 overs to leave the visitors on 291 for six. Chelmsford reached 49 before losing their first wicket in the 11th over. Chidley (74) entered and played himself in before Thrift was dismissed. Bradley Green (47) joined Chidley and these two began to increase the scoring rate with a flurry of boundaries adding 97 before Chidley was bowled. Green followed shortly afterwards run out when sent back by Rob Hayto (34). Lee Cranmer joined Hayto with 92 needed of nine overs. Cranmer, who perhaps unsurprisingly, relished the opportunity and his part in closing out the win, finished with 41 not out off 27 balls. 3RD TEAM Brentwood 186-9 Chelmsford 156 all out

(Brentwood won by 30 runs) Shepherd Neame Essex League Premier Division Played at the Old County Ground

A POOR display with the bat saw

Chelmsford crash to defeat at Brentwood. Three early wickets and some good bowling had put Chelmsford in a strong position. Brentwood rebuilt through Walford who played pragmatically and Bacon, who was appropriately streaky. Bacon started to score quite quickly before James Arnold (2-38) made the breakthrough and followed it up with another. The sixth wicket pair looked dangerous but Alistair Fergus (452) came back into the attack and removed both, including Walford (56) to a fine return catch. With Tom Arnold (2-27) bowling well and picking up wickets in successive balls, Chelmsford would have hoped to close the innings out but the last pair scrambled a useful dozen or so finishing on 186. A good opening spell from Hilliard asked questions of Chelmsford’s batting and the openers succumbed. Steve Pleasant and Matt Davis put together a good partnership though and this was the point that Chelmsford seemed to be in control. Arnold and Harry Green put together a decent partnership though and once again raised hopes.

Jonsson and Ellis trump the Aces L ED BY skipper Andreas Jonsson with 13 points and Adam Ellis also scoring well, the Lakeside Vortex Hammers took the maximum Elite league points with a hard fought 51-42 victory over the Belle Vue Aces. In their last visit to Lakeside, the Aces had snatched a two point win, and their GP star Matej Zagar set his intentions down in the very first heat, with a fast gate-to-flag victory. Jonsson missed the gate but claimed second place by the end of the second lap, with the guesting former Hammer Piotr Swiderski picking up a point. Steve Worrall claimed the chequered flag in the first reserves race, despite initial pressure from Ellis, whilst Ben Morley, in for the injured Ashley Birks, comforably dealing with Hughes for a second shared heat. Zagar and Scott Nicholls then teamed up in the third for a maximum heat advantage over former Hammers skipper Davey Watt, in for the injured Kim Nilsson, and Edward Kennett, to open up a four point advantage.

The Hammers immediately hit back with a maximum of their own in the following race, with Lawson team riding Ellis to victory over Zengota, to level the scores. Swiderki showed a clean pair of gating gloves in the fifth, leaving Morley, Doolan and Worrall to scrap for three laps for the minor places, with Doolan claiming second and Morley a point, as Worrall spun on the third bend of lap three. Zagar continued his impressive form in the following heat, with Lawson and Kennett in points scoring positions behind, before Scott Nicholls delivered a delicious move to ride straight between the Hammers pairing on the third lap, to join his team mate for a 1-5 and edge the Aces back in to the lead. After further track grading, the Hammers then hit back again in the seventh with Jonsson delivering a strong first and second bend, to leave a gap for Watt to join him for a Hammers max and a two point advantage. With Worrall excluded for missing the two minute warning in the 8th, Lawson

and Ellis extended the lead to six points with another comfortable maximum. This advantage was extended further in the following heat when after two initial false starts for movement at the tapes and a re-run following a first bend spill for Zengota, Swiderski and Ellis team rode to keep Worrall at the back. With the Aces ten points down, Zagar was the obvious tactical nomination, and didn’t disappoint with another dominant tapes to flag victory, whilst Watt eventually squeezed past Doolan, as the Aces pulled the deficit back to five points. Jonsson got the better of Nicholls in the 11th as Swiderski kept Zenogta at bay, before Ellis continued his impressive nights work to take victory in the second reserves race. Jonsson then eased any Hammers fears taking the flag ahead of the Nicholls / Zagar pairing in the thirteenth, before Edward Kennett and Richard Lawson sealed the points for the Hammers with a final 5-1 in the penultimate race. Zagar finished the night with

Reflecting after the meeting Hammers Co-Promoter Jon Cook said: “I was pleased with the result, there was some good racing and the boys dug in

when Zagar delivered on the tactical, with AJ leading the way. I’m particularly pleased for Adam, who after going through some tough times this season, really showed what he is capable of, both with his gating and his riding in general.’’ Cook also announced during

straight into the limelight as he ended his debut game at Leicester Warrior as coach following Robert Youngblood’s ejection. His second visit to the Midlands venue proved to be much more successful as Leopards won the

National Trophy and he has since helped the Big Cats finish as Division One runners-up in 2014 and champions earlier this year. Ogunjimi is delighted that Malpass will return to the Leopards coaching staff: “We had a good chat at Saturday’s trial session, and I think Roger will be a great asset to us. “He has a lot of experience both at Leopards and in the BBL with Lions, and he brings continuity and knowledge that will be invaluable.” Malpass is excited to be returning for a fourth season with the Big Cats: “I am very pleased to be returning for another season with the Leopards,” he said. “Following Robert’s decision to resign I was unsure what I would be doing this season, but following discussions with new head coach Steve Ogunjimi I’m delighted to accept the offer to assist him in his new endeavour. “I want to take a moment to

thank Robert Youngblood for giving me the opportunity to coach at Leopards initially and for all he taught me. “I’m looking forward to the challenge of the new season and all that it entails.” n Leopards will host Plymouth Leopards Raiders in the BBL Trophy on Friday, January 15, 2016. The Big Cats have been regular entrants into the league cup of the British League over the last 11 years, and thanks to the help of Brentwood Leisure Trust will host the Raiders this season. The 12 BBL sides are joined by the reigning Division One champions along with NBL rivals Derbyshire Trailblazers and Reading Rockets and Scottish side Falkirk Fury in a competition that is played on a straight knockout basis until the two-leg semi-finals.
