ACTIVE KIDS
10 Minute Shake Up Zoe Williams, former Gladiator Amazon encourages children to keep active daily
T
HIS summer, Change4Life has teamed up with Disney to inspire children in the East of England to get active with the launch of this year’s new 10 Minute Shake Up campaign. The campaign aims to help children reach the minimum 60 minutes of physical activity they need every day through 10 minute bursts of activity, inspired by Disney characters. Zoe Williams GP and former Gladiator Amazon, is supporting the 10 Minute Shake Up campaign to encourage children to get active this summer. Last week she visited Chase Lane Nursery and Primary School in Harwich to talk to pupils about the importance of staying active. The Change4Life 10 Minute Shake Up campaign comes on the back of a new Public Health England study which identifies the direct benefit physical activity has on children’s physical, social and emotional development. New this summer, the campaign gets kids to join one of four Disney teams, including Frozen, Big Hero 6, Monsters and Toy Story. There are lots of new and exciting 10 minute games and activities for children to play and try and help their team win by doing as many Shake Ups as they can. On being involved with the campaign, Zoe
said: “60 minutes of exercise every day for children can sound like a lot, but when broken down into fun 10 minute activities it is a lot more manageable, and these can be a great way to bust boredom over six long weeks of summer holiday. Physical activity is incredibly important for keeping children happy and healthy now and in the future and this summer is the perfect time for them to discover the joys of being active. From their heart to their brain, there are so many health benefits children can enjoy from physical activity.” Zoe’s top tips for inspiring kids to get active: 1. Take the kids to your local park - just playing in the play area or running around will help gets hearts beating faster and keep them entertained. 2. Don’t let the weather be an excuse. Even if it’s raining children can still be active. 3. Get your kids active and helpful at the same time. Ask them to lay the table or do the washing up - it may not seem like much but will get them off the sofa and make activity part of a routine. 4. Walk don’t drive, adding extra activity into your children’s day. 5. Do an activity challenge together such as working towards a fun run or a walk for charity. risk of conditions such as heart disease, stroke, type 2 diabetes, colon and breast cancer and Alzheimer’s Disease. It also helps maintain a healthy weight, improves cholesterol levels, reduces blood pressure, builds healthy muscles and bones, improves balance and reduces the risk of falls.’

All breaks are little-legs friendly, designed for younger families and offering an extra-short, part-day walk option, as well as the usual selection of up to three walks. The part-day walks leave the afternoons free to check out local family attractions, before dinner at 6.30pm. Walk leaders ensure that families get the most out of the walks and activity leaders organise activities and games for younger children before dinner and for the whole family after dinner. Only families can book on HF Holidays’ dedicated Family Adventures, meaning the kids get the run of the country house in a safe environment. All seven night holidays feature a ‘free day’, meaning families can enjoy a day without walks to get out and make the most of the nearby attractions. Fitness Can Pilates improve LIFESTYLE
Pilates instructor Helen Barness tees off on the subject
For the last week I have been a golf widow as my husband has been tuned into one of the major golfing events of the season, The Open. I learnt how well the course is being kept, the difficult dynamics of a hole and many other interesting and noninteresting golfing facts!
I
AM though genuinely interested as I do possess a set of golf clubs (albeit over a decade old now) and I have been over to the range with my husband Steve and a friend of mine (lady) who plays an exceptionally good handicap and has had the patience to give me guidance. My problem, like my husband, is time and more importantly patience! On the occasions I have managed to go to the range, I can hit that ball. I have good thoracic movement and ability to drive power through my swing and this half of the year, I have promised myself to start playing golf regularly. However I digress, back to my
husband who’s not a bad golfer at all considering he doesn’t get to play much and considering that last year he did wonder if he could continue to play with having had a bad back throughout most of last year. Now as you probably realised from the title, I teach Pilates and although I have said to my husband time and time again, come along, try it, it will really help you move more freely and improve your golf performance, it took a back injury and his physio to tell him to go and do it! Anyway the long and short of it is that Steve’s back has improved considerably, so much so that he
now also does Personal Training twice a week and golf wise, his game is doing well this year. His back is not bothering him and he is improving hugely in his ability to twist and swing. So if you are a golfer and even if you aren’t, here are some top warm up exercises to assist your game, which are also useful whether you play golf or not and feature in our Pilates classes on a regular basis! Not with a golf club though! It is always important to prepare your body for the sport it is about to do therefore it is important to replicate some of the movements you are about to take on. Never miss your warm up or your cool down!
Warm up moves Squats
Squat down holding golf club as thought sitting into a chair. Keep weight towards heels, arms reach out front if possible. Repeat 10 times.
Spine curl
From a squat position still holding golf club but down in front of your thighs, stick your tail bone out so lower back slightly arches, then draw stomach inwards towards your spine so your back curves like a Cat doing a stretch. As curl spine allow arms to come away from thighs but they still follow the line of shoulders, they are not hanging.

Side bends
Holding golf club over head — reach arms over to one side then the other, feet are about hip width apart but find a comfortable stance. You are lengthening out one side of your waist whilst working the other.
Shoulder circles
Put club down and shrug shoulders up to ears and back down, then circle them forward and back. Take it into a bigger circulate action so elbow goes up and out to side of body. Repeat single shoulder, then both together x 5.
Side bend
Stand with both feet evenly placed. Use club as balance option in one hand. Pick up opposite leg to hand holding club, take leg forward, side and back through centre so circling leg at the hip. Repeat x10 one direction then reverse and then do other leg.
Spine Twist
Options here to do this standing still, holding clubs, turn to one side moving from your rib cage rather than your arms leading the way and turn to look over shoulder. Progress this by adding a lunge forward as take arms with club over the side of the lunging leg. Keep

eyes looking forward to keep you more balanced. You can modify the lunge by not taking as deep a stride forward. Pilates has a multitude of benefits to golfers because the slow nature of the exercises make you much more aware of how you sequence movement, what muscles are assisting, whether you are over recruiting muscles, where there is tension and if one side of your body is stronger than the other. This is particularly important if you are always leaning over to one side in your swing, or your lead hip cannot internally rotate. You need
to be aware of what movement you have available to you from upper to lower body. Also balance and coordination is regularly tested within our classes so that we find centre with our body weight as much as possible which obviously in golf will help improve power and force through that swing. Shoulder stability too is a crucial area with the amount of repetition on one side that you have in golf and likewise many sports. Pilates looks at everything — head placement, what your neck is doing as you move, have your shoulders stabilised, is your rib cage and shoulder alignment working well, do your hips move fully or have they stiffened up, is your lower back working too hard, even looking at your feet! If your ankles are weak and have a limited range of movement this will have a knock on effect on your knees and your hips may well be trying to work a lot harder to deal with the lack of three dimensional movement from the ankle. Pilates delves into so many aspects of how your body and your
Spine twist mind works and ultimately wants you to move more freely and for those messages from your brain to reach the right area of your body and achieve the movement that you want and need. If you are interested in more Pilates for Golf tips, do get in touch and I am also available to run workshops on this topic. You never know, even one Pilates session may free up a whole range of movement that has been limiting your performance! To find out more about Pilates, contact Helen on 07956 520767

Lighten up Our fantastic new health and fitness series by wellbeing writer Lance Geringer, B.A. will point you in the right direction when it comes to getting the body you want. Part 1, focuses on How to start your diet and exercise programme….
A
T one time or another, each of us has looked at ourselves in the mirror and have been disappointed with what we’ve seen. Normally, the next step is to start a diet and exercise programme to shed the excess pounds gained and get back into shape. Unfortunately, going directly into a weight loss programme is not the right way to start, and more than likely doing this will lead you astray - causing frustration and discouragement. Once you start getting these emotions, you will stop the dieting and exercising and re-gain any weight you’ve lost. Even worse, you may also put on an additional few more pounds over and above the original weight you started at. Where to begin: Starting your diet and
with Lance LANCE GERINGER is the wellbeing writer for Women & Golf magazine, he has developed products such as the Fit & Trim bar to curb hunger and cravings for those on diets and healthy eating plans, as well as the UK & Europe’s No. 1 golf nutrition bar. His new eBook, ‘The Problems of Dieting – The Solutions for Success!’ can be downloaded for free at www.fitandtrimbar.co.uk.
exercise programme: Losing weight and getting the body you want doesn’t just happen by going on a diet and exercise programme, yet this is the first thing we’re told to do – and it’s wrong! The first thing you must do is ‘STOP THE CURRENT WEIGHT GAIN’! By figuring out the underlying cause of your weight gain, you will be able to make the right lifestyle changes necessary, to not only lose the weight, but keep it off and reach your body shape goals. This is the first part of your diet and exercise programme, and if you don’t do this you will be like the majority of people who lose some weight only to re-gain it back because they didn’t understand that lifestyle changes have to made if you want permanent weight loss.
The following are four of the main areas which normally cause us to gain weight: 1. Job - Our lives are centered around work and thinking about dieting and exercising is secondary to it. You will need to look at the amount of time you have daily and then manipulate it so that you can find the time to eat and exercise properly each day. 2. Relationships & Family – Happiness in our relationships is the key to making us feel good about ourselves which helps us continue our programme. Depression normally causes the ‘I don’t care’ attitude and stops us from seeing that we’re gaining weight. 3. Age – It is a scientific fact that as we get older our metabolisms will slow down causing weight gain, even if we’re eating the same food and doing the same amount of exercise as before. 4. Addiction to food – A lot of people use food to make themselves feel better if they are not happy with their lives. This area is the hardest to resolve and takes some real soul searching, as our past dictates how we act currently. The real question Everyone wants to look good but the real question is: Are you willing to put the time and energy necessary into your diet and exercise programme to get you there? People always tell me they want to lose weight, but just by talking to them I can see that they are not ready to eat a certain way or find the time
to exercise so that they can succeed in their getting in shape programme. If you can’t put 100% effort into your diet and exercise plan you will not get the results you’re after. For these people I recommend that they hold off starting any diet or exercise plan until after they’ve resolved the issues which might be holding them back, because I guarantee that sooner or later these same issues will come up and stop you from dieting and exercising. REMEMBER: It doesn’t matter when you start, it only matters that you’re able to continue with your programme through the bad times, which I guarantee always seem to pop up.
Getting the body you want Now that you have an understanding of what you need to do before starting your diet and exercise programme, we can start your plan of attack. In order to get the body you’re after there are four things that need to be put into place: 1. Starting your diet 2. Beginning your exercise plan 3. Consistency with your diet and exercise programmes 4. Patience In Part 2: ‘Dieting the right way’, I will discuss how a diet can either help you get the results you’re after or make your life miserable and stop you from reaching your goals.

ARBECUE spatulas are ready for action in the coming weeks so why not ‘rev’ up the tastebuds with a delicious, superfood salad says Amber Heath from Bodysense UK and Lindsey Abbott, founder of Shimmy ’n’ Groove fitness.
Goat’s Cheese and Beetroot Salad
Beets are back! This salad features bright-red roots alongside
Spinach, Avocado, and Kiwi Salad
thinly sliced carrots. It’s a recipe perfect for any fan of root veggies. (Bonus: The high levels of potassium in beets help your body build muscle and proteins.) Toss the vegetables with pistachios (for fibre and protein), goat’s cheese, and baby greens for a speedy, tasty lunch.
Greek Yogurt Chicken Salad
This chicken salad recipe uses Greek yogurt (which is packed with probiotics that can aid digestion and supplies a healthy dose of protein) rather than mayonnaise for a deliciously creamy and healthy sandwich filling. Apples, almonds, and green onions add tasty crunch to this light, gluten-free lunch.
This salad is primarily made of fruit, with spinach playing second fiddle. Featuring kiwis (containing 117 percent of the daily recommended value of vitamin C) and avocados (which are loaded with healthy fats and vitamins like B6, which promote healthy skin), these superfruits make this salad superdelicious.
Quinoa Salad With Red Pepper and Cilantro
Quinoa is a powerhouse seed that provides a light but protein-rich base for this cool salad. Topped with a citrusy vinaigrette made of cilantro, lime, and mustard, this meal will leave you full without the empty calories in most pasta salads.
Stacked Salmon Salad
Avocado, yellow squash, and
whole roasted red piquillo peppers are neatly layered to make this breadless ”sandwich.” Yellow squash not only has high levels of vitamin C, but its high content of lutein helps protect eye health. Oven-baked salmon acts as the bread to the layers of antioxidantrich veggies. The best part? This stacked gourmet lunch takes less than 30 minutes to prepare.

lose to the borders with Hertfordshire and Cambridgeshire, the Uttlesford district is often a high-flyer in national surveys (such as those of the Sunday Times and Halifax) for overall quality of life, thanks to its great amenities, high levels of wellbeing, education and employment among its residents and pleasant physical environment. Takeley is one of the most popular villages in this sought-after area, recorded in Norman times and still boasting a 12thcentury parish church. Home to a handful of shops and the essential village pub, Takeley is just 10 minutes’ drive to the larger village of Great Dunmow, 15 minutes from Bishop’s Stortford, 20 minutes from Braintree and half-an-hour from Chelmsford. These straightforward journeys bring a host of shops and services within easy reach, along with numerous sports clubs, gyms and other leisure facilities. The village is also only a few minutes from Stansted Airport, a major local employer and useful transport hub, not just for flights but for rail and bus links to London, East Anglia and beyond. Thankfully, the A120 linking Braintree and Bishop’s Stortford via the airport bypasses the village, limiting the amount of through-traffic that blights the main street through it. It’s the ideal place to make a home for all sorts of house-hunters, from young professionals to families and downsizers. The often-overhyped idea of the “best of both worlds” really does apply here, as the impressive array of new homes being built in the village are close to comprehensive

Quality streets The village of Takeley is attracting more and more people to its quality of life and superb new homes choice public and private transport links and the surrounding countryside is perfect for escaping the daily grind and giving children a great place to grow up. For example, the town’s football team, believed to be more than 100 years old, has
youth and women’s squads in addition to its first team and just outside the village, the National Trust-managed Hatfield Forest National Nature Reserve is home to 3,500 wildlife species and is perfect for a stroll with the family.

s political uncertainty regarding the General Election subsided, the number of mortgages for house purchases rose by 12.8% in June compared to May, making it the strongest month for house purchase loans since January 2014. The figures show increased confidence in the market with a leading expert calling them “the summer comeback we’ve all been waiting for”. The latest Mortgage Monitor report from e.surv, the UK’s largest chartered surveyor, has revealed that house purchase mortgage approvals rallied in June to a 17-month
House purchase mortgage approvals hit 18-month high New figures have revealed that confidence returned to the mortgage market high. There were 72,712 house purchase approvals in June, up 12.8% on the 64,434 recorded in May. The monthly increase is the largest month-on-month improvement since
February 2009 and house purchase approvals have also risen significantly on an annual basis, with this June seeing 10.5% more approvals than the 65,794 recorded 12 months ago.
Richard Sexton, director of e.surv chartered surveyors, says: “This is the summer comeback we’ve been waiting for. Potential borrowers clearly paused their actions whilst the election came and went. But now borrowers are back in the market for mortgages and demand is stronger than ever. “Interest rates have remained at record lows with a dovish outlook from the Bank of
England’s Monetary Policy Committee, and we’re seeing a bevy of fixed-rate options as banks compete for buyers’ business. More positivity among buyers and lenders alike means the market is now on a stable course of sustainable lending.” The data from e.surv also revealed that June saw an increase in the number of mortgage approvals for borrowers with a small deposit (15% or less). There were 12,288 approvals for higher loan-to-value (LTV) house purchase loans in June, a 17.7% improvement on the 10,438 recorded in May and up 5.5% on the 11,646 seen in June 2014. The number of higher LTV loans reached its highest monthly volume since April 2008, when there were 12,572 approvals in this category. Sexton adds: “It’s a clear case of growing confidence spreading beyond those already securely on the property ladder. Higher LTV borrowers – typically first-time buyers – are still reaping the benefits from initiatives like Help to Buy. “But this significant increase in lending to borrowers with smaller deposits goes deeper than the various plans in place to help this group. It’s a sign that the nation’s finances are getting back in order, with wage growth starting to mount and an economy ready to shake off the doldrums and get back to work.”

Nanokeratin System an incredible hair care treatment

HIS pioneering treatment is based on a scientifically proven micro size molecular hair repair and enhancement system, powered by biomimetic ingredients designed to deeply penetrate into the smallest hair fibres to activate the inner hair cortex and create a non-soluble shield against environmental elements. The ingredients bring a multitude of benefits including a series of

hand-selected vitamins and essential oils leaving hair smoother, beautifully conditioned and mostly importantly healthy from within and back to optimum health.
The treatment:
It is a salon treatment which starts with a shampoo cleanse to
get rid of any product. The treatment is then applied to damp hair, each strand is coated with the Nanokeratin system treatment and then left for 30 minutes. Hair is then blowdried. Every strand of hair is then straightened to seal in the treatment and leave hair super smooth and frizz free. For best results hair must not be washed for 72 hours. Once it is
washed for the first time, it will remain frizz free, ease to manage and physically healthier from within. Results last up to 3 months.

UMMER is here and its time to enjoy the sunshine. Whether you are sunning in the park or on that long awaited holiday there is ONE beauty essential that will keep you looking radiant from head to toe – Argan Oil. Argan Oil originally comes from Morocco where it has been used as both a food and a beauty treatment for centuries. It is super versatile and great for holidays and your handbag - because the one product can do so much. Want to know how to get the best from your Argan oil?
Suhara Philgence from Afrodite Wigs has some summer beauty tips: Hair Care: For instant lustre and shine, massage a teeny amount of Argan oil between the palms of your hands and massage evenly through your hair from root to tips. All day conditioner & frizz controller: Apply a small amount of Argan oil to freshly washed, damp hair or even dry hair to control frizz and quench your hair’s thirst. You only need a tiny amount and it will keep frizz at bay all day.

Argan is a light protective hair serum that seals and protect hair cuticles to reduce blow drying time and extend the life of your colour treatments. Prevent Sun Damage: Argan oil is a natural sun protector of around SPF15. We often underestimate the damage sun exposure can do to our skin and hair, including premature wrinkles and sagging. Argan oil is intensely hydrating and rich in vitamin E, so it’s perfect for protecting your skin at the poolside. Simply moisturise your skin and hair with a few drops before going
out in the sun – your hair and skin will be hydrated and protected, and you’ll great for longer.
Beauty glow: Argan oil is considered a ‘dry oil’ – which means it is non-greasy and absorbs very quickly, so it makes a great moisturiser. Add 2-3 drops of Argan oil to your foundation, bronzer or tinted moisturizer to create that dewy natural glow to your skin. A few drops of Argan oil can also be added to your favourite facial toner so you’ll simultaneously hydrate and tone your skin.

tools such as the exclusive online ‘Get Fit’ and ‘Get Toned’ goal-based programmes, as well as distance and event-based challenges (swimfit.com). Members of Swimfit Activate+ also benefit from a better understanding of good swimming techniques to help them swim faster, and to turn at the end of each length. There are a wide range of improvement techniques that can be employed to improve your performance in the water and your coach will help you develop these. Hitting the wall In the same way that marathon runners use techniques when they ‘hit the wall’, swimmers can manage tiredness too. Often swimmers give-up as they don’t feel they can swim very far, so Mitchell Grant, Pools Manager, Riverside Ice and Leisure Centre has created these top tips to help you get the most out of your swim.
1. Keep it varied – change your stroke throughout your sessions to vary the muscles you use. Backstroke is particularly good for catching your breath and steadying your breathing. Just avoid switching strokes too often – it can be counterproductive. A good rule of thumb is to change your stroke when you feel your technique is dropping.
2. Switch effort – when you start to feel tired, ease off your arms and concentrate on generating momentum with your legs for a couple of lengths, then switch to using your arms more, resting your legs a little.
3. Conserve energy – hold your glide for as long as you can until you get your breath back or feel more energised. This also helps to build a more efficient technique and helps to establish rhythm and control in your swimming. 4. Aim for small improvements – don’t try to achieve too much. Listen to your body and push it only as far as is comfortable – your breathing should be heavy but you should still be able to talk. 5. Check your technique – if you aren’t using the right
technique you could be wasting a considerable amount of energy. Ask at your local pool to see whether a qualified instructor could observe your technique and offer suggestions for improvements. For further information about Riverside Ice and Leisure Centre and South Woodham Ferrers Leisure Centre’s pool, please visit www.chelmsford.gov.uk/sports. * South Woodham Ferrers Leisure Centre does not offer a coach for the Swim Fit session on Sundays.

Rhyme times Sharing a book or a rhyme with a child is great fun. And this simple, everyday part of family life, has an amazing power to support children as they grow, says Sarah Mears from Essex Libraries.
S
TORIES and rhymes help children develop language and communication skills. But even more importantly, they can actually boost children’s emotional development. Just by reading aloud together for ten minutes a day will see them grow into eager, confident learners, acquiring listening skills and gaining new words that are far beyond their reading ability, helping the child to be ready for school, to make friends and enjoy learning. Rhymes help children feel confident with words and will also help them as they begin to learn. Sharing rhymes is also a fun way to build a loving relationship and help your child develop a life-long love of
rhymes, stories and books. There is a biological reason for this, when a child is feeling relaxed and safe and loved by someone who they trust, the hormone oxytocin is released. Oxytocin is the stress reducing, calming hormone. So to boost a child’s emotional development through rhymes and stories here are a few tips:
1: Take the child to rhymetime at the local library. Rhymetimes take place every week encouraging parents and children to enjoy rhymes and simple stories together, meet other
families and borrow books.
2: Sing rhymes and songs together at home or in the car. 3: Spend a few minutes every day reading stories. Sometimes people worry that they won’t read well enough or feel silly doing character voices. But none of these things
matter to a child. They will just be happy that you are spending time with them. Sometimes telling the story in your own words works just as well. Follow your child’s lead and don’t make it a chore, some children will not focus for long at first but even very short bursts of time will make a difference.
4: When you share books and
rhymes, it is lovely to be cuddling a child on your knee and it is also really important for your child to be able to make eye contact with you. “Teaching parents to be about bonding and attachment, and the importance of holding, talking and gazing at their child, cannot be underestimated. It is possibly the single most important role that a parent has, in terms of the child’s emotional development” Evidence quoted in a recent Government report called “Building Great Britons”. Essex Libraries have been working with a new organisation called EmpathyLab www.empathylab.uk testing ways to use books and stories to support children’s emotional development and are encouraging parents and carers to turn babies round when sharing favourite stories and rhymes so that they are face to face with their child. Even very young babies will fix their eyes on
the adult’s face and respond to expressions as they share the story or rhyme. There are some really good rhymes for face to face sharing for example “Row row row your boat” - parent and child sit on the floor facing each other and holding both hands to rock back and forth and “Humpty Dumpty” or “Horsey Horsey” for bouncing on knees. When reading stories a child can either sit on the floor facing you or sit in a baby seat. (You just need to perfect the art of reading upside down so that you can show the child the pictures as you read). And pause as you read to make eye contact with the child.
5: As babies become toddlers and young children, it is really important to talk about the characters in stories – discuss what they did and how they were feeling. Adults can help children by naming emotions in the story – “the Gruffalo’s Child felt very scared when she saw the Big Bad Mouse”, “Elmer the elephant was upset because he felt different from the others”. This helps children recognise and understand emotions and have more control over their own. This can lead to calmer behaviour and less anxiety. Supporting children’s emotional development, ensuring they have confident and happy lives has never been more important than it is in our fast paced, ever changing and pressured world, and the role books and stories can play especially when in the hands of a loving parent or carer is invaluable. Summer is the season Amy-Beth Ellice has been cooking and baking since the tender age of three. Now, 16-years old, she has put together a fabulous collection of delicious recipes in her first cookery book ‘Amy’s Baking Year.’
Mint Chocolate Chip Ice Cream
T
“This fresh mint ice cream will cool you down this summer.”
HE book’s chapters take you on a cake-filled journey through the seasons. Perfect for this time of year, we have chosen some of Amy-Beth’s most mouthwatering ‘Summer’ concoctions for Made in Essex readers to enjoy.
My Mum’s Butterfly Cakes
Makes 12 Ingredients: For the cakes: 175g (6oz) butter 175g (60z) caster sugar 175g (6oz) self-raising flour 3 eggs 1tsp vanilla extract For the buttercream 175g (6oz) butter 350g (12oz) icing sugar, plus extra for dusting 2-3 tbsp milk 1tsp vanilla extract “These easy butterfly cakes were a favourite birthday tradition for our family when we were little, and are perfect to sell at a summer fete or cake sale.”
Method 1. Preheat the oven to 180C/ fan 160C/350F/gas mark 4 and line a 12-hole muffin tin with paper cupcake or muffin cases. 2. Put the butter, caster sugar, eggs and vanilla extract into the bowl of a free-standing electric mixer (or you can use a handheld electric whisk and mixing bowl). Then sift in the flour, lifting the sieve quite high to incorporate air, and beat for 1-2 minutes until light and creamy. Divide the mixture evenly between the paper cases. 3. Bake in the preheated oven for 20-25 minutes or until well risen and a skewer inserted into one of the cakes comes out clean. Remove from the
oven and leave to cool in the tin for 10 minutes. Transfer to a wire rack to cool completely. 4. Meanwhile, prepare the buttercream. Beat the butter until soft and creamy. Sift the icing sugar and add to the creamed butter in two stages, mixing on a low speed. When fully incorporated add the milk and vanilla extract and beat for 3-5 minutes on a higher speed. 5. Using a small, sharp knife, cut out the centre of each cake and slice each scooped-out piece in half. 6. Spread the buttercream into the hollow with a small rounded knife. 7. Reposition the cut out centres on each cake so they resemble butterfly wings.
Amy’s tip: “You will need an ice cream maker. The bowl of the ice cream maker will need to be pre-frozen in the freezer for at least 8 hours, or overnight.” Serves 6-8 Ingredients: 250ml (8fl. oz) whole milk 175g (6oz) caster sugar 500ml (16fl.oz) double cream 1 tsp vanilla extract 110g (4oz) mint leaves 75g (3oz) high quality dark chocolate (70% cocoa solids) Green food colouring (gel/ paste is best) Method 1. Combine the milk, cream, sugar and vanilla extract in a medium sized saucepan and heat over a medium heat. Stir until the sugar has completely dissolved and the mixture comes to a low boil. Turn the heat to low and simmer for about 4 minutes. 2. Break the mint leaves down
a little with a wooden spoon. Add the mint to the saucepan with the milk mixture and cover with a lid. On a low heat, let it steep for 25 minutes. 3. Put a sieve over a large bowl and pour the milk mixture through it to remove the mint leaves. Transfer the bowl into the fridge and chill for 3 hours or overnight. Mix in a little green food colouring using the tip of a cocktail stick until it is a very pale pastel green colour. 4. Process the chilled mixture in an ice cream maker for about 30 minutes or until thickened. Put the container you plan to use for the ice cream in the freezer to chill while the ice cream churns. 5. Chip the chocolate into small chunks and fold the pieces into the churned ice cream. Transfer the ice cream into your chilled container and freeze for at least 4-6 hours before serving. 6. The cakes are ready when they are golden brown and coming away from the edge of the tins and a skewer inserted into the middle of the cakes comes out clean. Remove them from the oven and leave to cool in their tins for 5 minutes. Carefully turn the cakes onto a wire rack and peel off the baking parchment. Leave to cool completely.
1. Preheat the oven to 180C/fan 160C/350F/gas mark 4 2. Grease two 20cm (8inch) cake tins and line the bases with baking parchment. 3. Put the butter, caster sugar and eggs into the bowl of a free-standing electric mixer, or you can use a handheld electric whisk and mixing bowl). Then sift in the flour lifting your sieve quite high to incorporate air and beat for 1-2 minutes until light and creamy. 4. Divide the mixture evenly between the tins. You can weigh the filled tins if you want to check they are even. Lightly smooth the surface of the cake mixture with a spatula or the back of a spoon. 5. Top with the second cake and dust the top with icing sugar using a doily to create a pretty pattern like my grandma showed me when I was little.

When was the last time you were proud of the company you work for?
We’re not talking about pride in your work. We’re talking about being proud to work for a company that stands for something. Something you feel passionately about. You see, we’re looking for recruitment consultants to share in our vision. But we’re not copying the crowd by looking for people unhappy in their current role. We want people who are happy and doing well… but need more. Need to believe in something bigger and better.
To achieve the best, we recruit the best. We expect all of our employees to uphold our core values and deliver our business goals. We are currently seeking experienced and trainee recruitment consultants, from a recruitment or sales background, with the following attributes:
We feel pride in our company when we get emails from candidates thanking us, not only for placing them in an amazing role, but for the support we give them. We feel pride when our employees of the month are given a fabulous weekend in Monte Carlo. When we feel like part of an amazing success story at the monthly company meeting. When we double in size in the space of a year. When we set ourselves a target of raising over £10K for charity in a year… and then smash that target.
• The drive to succeed and maximise their earning potential. • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal. • Strong negotiators who build and maintain long term relationships. • A professional and personable approach. • The ability to work within and add to a team.
We are proud to say we are Athona Recruitment. We are passionate, trustworthy, inquisitive and ethical. Are you?
In return for your hard work, we offer you the chance to work within a corporate environment that has retained its family feel. We also offer the following:
Contact our HR manager Laura Griffiths on laura.griffiths@athona.com or call 01277 217777 www.athona.com
• Market-leading salary, commission and benefits packages. • A career development framework. • In-house training overseen by our training manager. • Regular incentives that reward strong sales performance. • Employee engagement programme including gym membership.

A relative who is putting pressure on you needs to be confronted. You’re tired of being subject to their dramatic mood swings. It’s important to control your own temper during this stressful time. Lashing out in an aimless and pointless way will make a bad situation worse. Fortunately, you have supportive friends who can help you through this stressful time. You might want to stay with a loved one who can help you establish healthier boundaries. It’s time to mend or end this situation.
Selfishness does not breed success. If you’re going to realise your professional ambitions, you should be open hearted and generous. Compliment talented people who help you. Share the credit for projects with the team. Cultivate friendships with people at every level of the organisations. When people enjoy working with you, they’ll recommend you for plum positions and offer positive feedback to your employer. A terrific work assignment could soon be awarded to you.
LIBRA September 24th - October 23rd
Throwing your weight around will undermine your reputation. The last thing you need is to be accused of pushing people around. If someone can’t or won’t carry out their responsibilities, set the wheels in motion to deal with the situation and don’t be drawn into a personal confrontation. A hobby, sport or creative pastime will give you a much needed diversion from the dramas or drudgeries surrounding you so enjoy doing what brings you most pleasure and chill out.
CAPRICORN December 22nd - January 20th

LEO July 24th - August 23rd
A hidden enemy has been causing problems for you. This individual is extremely jealous. They think your success is due to your winning ways and charm rather than through sheer hard work and professionalism. Nothing you do or say will change their mind. Instead of trying to prove your worth forget about them and channel your energy into a professional partnership. Teaming up with someone with cutting edge sensibilities would be good for you both.
SCORPIO October 24th - November 22nd
Arguments about religion and politics can be very destructive. The last thing you want is to create resentments in a place of work. Don’t let a provocative colleague draw you into an argument. Instead of dealing directly with them, it may be better to file a complaint. Talk to your employer about the effect their behaviour is having on the rest of the team. Fortunately, your family can be a profound source of comfort to you. Turn to relatives for support.
AQUARIUS January 21st - February 19th

Transport and communication problems will throw a wrench in your schedule. It may best to cancel several appointments just to give yourself some more breathing space. Most people will be sympathetic to your situation and will try to accommodate you. Those who can’t should be met as quickly as possible. The sooner you take care of business with these individuals, the better. The people around you will be grateful for your diligent behaviour during this demanding time. Keep your valuables under lock and key. The last thing you want is to be the victim of theft. It’s also wise to upgrade your passwords and keep your bank statements away from prying eyes. Someone you trust could try to take advantage of your generous nature. It’s time to protect your interests. If that means being less generous with your possessions and resources, so be it. Your desire to help others is admirable, but don’t make yourself vulnerable to unscrupulous types.
CANCER June 22nd - July 23rd
Friends are pressuring you to take a job that doesn’t appeal to you. Try not to get defensive. Your loved ones really do have your best interests at heart. Although a position may not be glamorous, it will offer a steady source of income. In addition, this job could pave the way for a much better work situation. It’s usually easier to find work when you’re already employed. A nagging ache or pain may be the result of stress. Don’t suffer in silence, get it seen to.

HETHER you’re a lover of wild places or busy beaches with amenities galore, Essex is the perfect place for a trip to the seaside. You’ll be spoilt for choice too, as the county boasts one of the largest coastlines in Britain. At over 580kms long, there’s plenty to see and do, from Harwich in the north to Leigh-on-Sea in the south. The ‘Sunshine Coast’ boasts two of the finest beaches in the country. West Beach at Leigh-on-Sea Clacton is every inch a traditional sandy beach with a pier. It is perfect for families with young children, as it has gently shelving sand that runs down to the water’s edge. Nearby, is the Pavilion Fun Park and an excellent choice of bars, cafes and restaurants. Compared by one visitor as Monaco to Clacton’s Nice, Frinton is a very different proposition. The esplanade is bare, save for a fine, sandy beach and Victorianstyle beach huts. This is the legacy of Sir Richard Powell Cooper who - one hundred years ago - oversaw Frinton’s development. His vision starkly contrasted with those of the burghers of neighbouring towns and to this day, Frinton offers a far more serene seaside experience. Mersea Island has beaches that will delight everyone. West
Mersea’s beach is a mixture of sand and pebbles that is popular with day-trippers and locals alike. The water quality is excellent – just ask seventh-generation oyster fisherman Richard Haward, who’s family also own and run the Company Shed restaurant on the island – and there are other facilities to make this a great destination for a brilliant day out. The beaches of East Mersea are open, sandy and beautiful. Surprisingly, they aren’t as populous on high days and holidays as their westerly counterparts, making them ideal for those who prefer a quieter time beside the sea. Of course, no guide to the county’s beaches is complete without mention of Canvey Island, Leigh-on-Sea and Southend-on-Sea. Canvey’s two principal beaches are Thorney Bay and Concord. Thorney Bay is small, sheltered and sandy. Behind it is a large, grassed area with a play park, which some parents will find is welcome relief once the charm of making sandcastles has lost its lustre. The larger Concord beach features a tidal pool for younger children to paddle in and is close to the island’s seafront shops, cafes and promenade. It is worth making the trip alone for the Labworth Restaurant. A stunning 1930s building, designed by Ove Arup who went on to help create the Sydney Opera House, the Labworth enjoys panoramic views over the Thames Estuary. Upmarket Leigh on Sea’s Bell Wharf beach is located in its characterful old town. Though small, Bell Wharf beach is clean
with golden, soft sand. You can enjoy a lazy day here, watching the little fishing boats come and go, or the super ships gliding by on the estuary. Southend-on-Sea possesses a staggering six miles of beaches. The closest one to Southend’s iconic pier is Three Shells Beach. Compact but kept scrupulously clean and well-presented, it is a magnet to holidaymakers during the summer. It has a tidal pool and is close to all the delights this famous seaside town has to offer; Adventure Island, the legendary pier (the world’s longest pleasure pier), the High Street and cafes, shops and amusements. If you head down the Eastern esplanade, you’ll have the choice of the superb beaches in Thorpe bay and Shoeburyness. The latter is a Blue Flag-winning beach consisting of sand, shingle and mud. For more information about all the beaches mentioned and many more, go to www.visitessex.com.

Boasting a sharper new look, refined and more efficient engines, and a host of safety, comfort and convenience features, the sixth-generation Transporter is set to continue the success of the previous five generations established over more than 60 years. The Transporter is Volkswagen biggest selling commercial vehicle model in the UK, and has consistently set the benchmark for quality, practicality and low running costs. also available on the panel van. As the Transporter shuttle and Caravelle are passengercarrying models, the engines detailed above are all Euro 6 compliant. They all benefit from Volkswagen’s acclaimed BlueMotion Technology modifications, which include low rolling resistance tyres, and battery regeneration and Stop/ Start systems to reduce fuel consumption and emissions. As a result the new models are up to 20 per cent cleaner and
All-electric Leaf is proving popular NISSAN has celebrated a significant milestone as figures from the Society of Motor Manufacturing and Traders (SMMT) confirm that more than 10,000 Nissan Leafs have been sold in the UK since the vehicle came to market. Launching in 2011, the Nissan Leaf quickly established itself as the nation’s pure electric model of choice and despite the arrival of a number of new entrants in the market, the latest dataset released by SMMT confirms that the Leaf remains firmly ahead of the chasing pack. In the first half of 2015, Nissan clocked up 2,964 Leaf sales in the UK, up 68.4% on the same period last year, taking the total number of Leafs sold since the vehicle’s launch to 10,161. Of those sales, the majority of units were sold in the last 12 months (51.7%) and predominantly to retail customers with almost 71.2% of Leafs registered in the retail channel. This significant growth is reflected in the wider electric vehicle market as the benefits of switching to all-electric mobility become better known. The UK is the number one European market for Nissan LEAF sales. Delve deeper into the figures released by SMMT, and the data also reveals that the Nissan Leaf outsold all other
pure electric models combined by more than two-to-one in the first half of 2015, commanding a market share of 63.3%. The news comes as a new valuepacked Acenta+ grade is added to the Leaf line-up, offering even more choice to prospective owners. Available now, the new Acenta+ model adds new features that make the British-built Nissan LEAF an even more complete package. James Wright, Managing Director,
Nissan Motor (GB) commented: “The UK’s electric vehicle market is growing at an extraordinary pace and while it may be too early to talk about tipping points, today’s achievement certainly indicates we’re well on our way. “I am proud that the Nissan Leaf has played such a major role in changing perceptions of electric vehicle ownership and I am even prouder that the UK is now the number one market for Leaf sales in Europe.”
10,000 sales for Nissan’s all-electric Leaf
more efficient than the previous generation versions. For example, the 2.0-litre 150 PS Euro 6 engine has a combined fuel consumption of 47.1 mpg with CO2 emissions of 155 g/ km. All 84 PS and 102 PS engines are fitted with a five-speed manual gearbox as standard, with 150 PS and 204 PS units equipped with either a standard six-speed manual transmission or a seven-speed DSG automatic.
To launch the new generation Transporter there will be a limited edition model based on the Caravelle: Generation Six. It will come with a 2.0-litre TDI 150PS engine with DSG gearbox and be available in two-tone Candy White and Cherry Red paint. This offers extra style and kerb appeal and harks back to the earlier generation Transporter model. Pricing and full specification for this limited edition will be announced separately.
RECORD HALF-YEAR FOR UK NEW CAR MARKET FIGURES released today by the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) show that registrations of new cars in the UK grew 7.0% in the first half of 2015 to the highest half-year total on record. Between January and June 1,376,889 cars were registered – higher than the previous record of 1,376,565 in the same period in 2004. Buyers’ appetite for British-built cars is on the increase, meanwhile, with 13.9% (around one in six) choosing a UK-manufactured vehicle so far this year – the highest level in five years. Low interest rates and attractive finance deals, combined with a wealth of new models featuring the latest technologies, have continued to encourage consumers to purchase new cars. June marked the 40th consecutive month of growth
in the market with a 12.9% increase in the month to 257,817 units. A significant feature of recent months has been a strong surge in demand for alternatively fuelled vehicles, and this was once again the case in June with volumes rising 70.9%. Fleet registrations continue to drive the growth, although registrations to private customers remain strong. Mike Hawes, SMMT Chief Executive, said, “It is still a great time to buy a new car in the UK, and it is encouraging to see more consumers choosing British models. “This is important for the wider economy with 799,000 people now employed across the UK automotive sector, including retail. “We anticipate a flatter second half of the year as the market finds its natural running rate.”

Brave new world for XC90 Volvo re-launches its brand with big seven-seat SUV. Chris Manning reports on the new XC90
V
OLVO’s new XC90 heralds a new era for the car makers as it is the first Volvo for many years to be designed, manufactured entirely by the Swedish car maker. It is a car of huge significance for Volvo, being the first in an entirely new product range using the new Scalable Product Architecture (SPA), where the same base chassis platform can be used to build a whole variety of other Volvos in the future. In addition to this the powertrains in the XC90 solely use Volvo Drive-E fuel and emissionsefficient petrol and diesel engines. Both the platform and engines are made in Sweden, and marks their independence and quite simple is a Volvo by Volvo, for Volvo. Hakan Samuelsson, president and CEO of Volvo Car Group, said: “The all-new XC90 is a milestone in the revival of Volvo. It is new from the ground up and showcases a new design language, new safety systems, new engines and new body architecture and sums up our vision for Volvo. We are not just launching a new car, but re-launching our brand.’’ The original XC90 introduced in 2002, was a popular SUVs and sold over 55,000 units in the UK and used a whole variety of engines and gearboxes. With the introduction of the new Drive-E engines, this has been reduced to one 2.0-litre four cylinder engine in either petrol or diesel formats. The D5 diesel produces 225hp and 470Nm of torque and uses twin turbos for a smooth power delivery, while the T6 petrol is both turbocharged and supercharged and pumps out 320hp. A third plug-in hybrid T8 Twin Engine model uses the same petrol engine with an addition of an electric motor of 87hp. As an example of the new engines efficiency, the previous diesel engine produced 200hp and 215g/km, while the Drive-E unit produces 225hp and just 149g/km of CO2. Volvo have always pioneered safety and with new safety technology on board the new XC90 they have taken a step closer to its vision that no one will be killed or seriously injured in a new Volvo by 2020. Fitted as standard is Volvo’s raft of City Safety
technologies, including autonomous emergency braking, pedestrian and cyclist detection and front collision warning. Optional features are Lane Keeping Aid, Driver Alert Control, Blind Spot detection and Rear Collision Mitigation. Two new world first include Run Off-Road protection which automatically tightens front seat belts, and a unit built into the seat frame absorbs vertical forces reducing spinal injuries and Auto brake at junctions which brakes the car if the driver inadvertently turns in front of an oncoming car at busy city intersections. Three models make up the trim line-up with Momentum, Inscription and sport-themed R-Design, each distinctive in its own right and all comprehensively equipped, with seven fully independent seats, 9in central touchscreen, controlling a myriad of functions, Sensus navigation system including internet access, traffic information etc, keyless entry, LED headlights. The Inscription is the most luxurious in the range, while the R-Design sports a unique front bumper, grille and rear styling and R-Design sports seats for the interior, 12.3in TFT driver display instrument binnacle, drive mode settings and 20in alloys. Prices start at £45,450 for the Momentum D5 diesel, with the equivalent T6 petrol at £48,800, with the most expensive being the Inscription T8 Twin Engine Hybrid at £63,650, which benefits from a low CO2 rating of 49g/km and Benefit in Kind (BIK) company car tax rating of just 5%. With a driving day in the Yorkshire Dales, it was time to put the new XC90 through its paces. Distinctive in design, it does have the shades of an Audi Q7 (one of its direct competitors) and first drive was in an Inscription model with D5 diesel engine mated to an eight-speed automatic gearbox and electronic air suspension which adds £2,150 to the on the road price of £50,185. Performance was brisk from the 2.0-litre diesel engine and the eight-speed auto box got on with the job without any fuss. The ride on the air suspension was on the hard side, and driving a conventionally-sprung Momentum model later in the day with a T6 petrol engine, my preferred

choice would be the diesel on standard springs. The interior is top quality if a little bland in silver and black but an alternative is to specify one with wood panel inserts across the dashboard and door panels and centre console which breaks up the silver/black theme. The seats are comfortable and supportive and the 9in touchscreen is one of the easier types encountered to use. During the test drive in the Yorkshire Dales I encountered at speed a hump-backed section of road, which was enough to activate the Run
Off-Road detection system as it had obviously detected a momentary loss of tyre contact with the road and felt the seat belts tighten and seat frame move. Always a popular towing vehicle the XC90 comes blessed with a healthy 2,700kg braked towing weight. On the lighter side, and something for the kids to find is a small spider in the third row of seats! All in all the Volvo XC90 is a great car. Good looks, performance and safety should see it sell as well as the last one.

CHELMSFORD CRICKET CLUB
Third team waste Green’s wicket haul with poor batting display
T
HE main action last weekend was on Sunday with Chelmsford in action in the Essex League T20 Finals Day. An exciting win over Hornchurch took them to the final where a very good bowling performance enabled Colchester to win the final. The hopes of a first team title stayed alive though with a win over South Woodford on Saturday. The seconds beat the same opposition and Phil Arnold was at it again in the fourths with another century as they won at Loughton. The thirds and fifths though were slaughtered by Harlow. That was vey hard on Harry green who bowled a superb spell. Although no one got a 50, the first team ran up 235 in difficult conditions. Chris Prowting’s 49 was the best score with Karamat Ali, Ollie Devenish and Dan Hagen also contributing well. There was an excellent return to form for Jack Moss in the second team who enjoyed a fairly routine win. Mark Drain (3-31) bowled very well as the home side were restricted to 185 for seven, both Browne and Maniani making half centuries. Moss played very well for 84 with Gary Chidley (42) supporting well as they won by five wickets. Harry Green’s outstanding seven wicket return was wasted by another abject batting display from the thirds. Sykes (105) made a century in astonishing fashion but Green helped to turn the score from 169 for two to
202 all out. The batsmen could only muster 115 in response. The third team batsmen may be struggling but Phil Arnold and Abijheet Kumar are thriving for the fourth team. Lougton scored a useful 241 for eight with three wickets from Tom Arnold and a good spell from Neil Raisborough. S.Arnold (108) and Kumar (91) made mincemeat of that. The fifths were on the end of a real pasting at Harlow. Dobson enjoyed his day as he returned six for 30. The sixth team won by 20 runs with Andy Shepherd running through the tail after Peter Banfield the first three wickets. Sunday’s action at Billericay started with a tense win over Hornchurch in which Nicke Prowting and Sam Cook excelled. Prowting showed the virtue of high quality batting with a composed unbetean 82 to take Chelmsford to 155. The T20 final proved to be a bit disappointing. After picking up four wickets fairly early on, the game slipped away. The chase of 150 started well but a fine spell from Henry Foster knocked Chelmsford off track. South Woodford suffered at the hands of Chelmsford again in the Under 16s Matchplay competition. Tom Arnold made a half century with Sean Sullivan and Harry Green making useful runs with Chelmsford’s 210 for eight. The visitors closed at 185 for nine with Shiraz Shahid taking four wickets to swing the game Chelmsford’s way.

Chelmsford, armed with their new signings of Charlie Henry and Billy Bricknell, were put through very tough performances as central defenders Reece Oxford and Josh Pask put the pair through their paces early on. On the 38th minute West Ham broke the deadlock with

an impressive, curling effort into the near corner from Nathan Mavila. At half-time numerous substitutions were made for either side including Reece Oxford and Josh Cullen who were substituted for Manny Onarise and Moses Makasi. Twenty minutes into the second half Jordan Brown grabbed his first goal of the evening. A misplaced pass between a trialist and experienced Clarets’ defender Mark Haines lead to Brown stealing the ball and slotting the ball past stranded ‘keeper Ashley Timms. Three minutes later Brown had earned his second goal. Brown (who represented England at under-16 level) fired a shot from the right side of the box, it was too powerful a strike for Timms to control and the ball squeezed itself under him. With fifteen minutes of the match remaining the Hammers almost grabbed their fourth goal of the night. The recently substituted on Jamal HectorIngram flicked a delicate cross from the right hand side of the pitch towards the far post however the approaching Jaanai Gordon’s headed effort struck against the bar and thundered away. Chelmsford had a chance to score quickly after however the Clarets’ effort was palmed away by the keeper and instantly sent up the other end of the pitch where the Hammers then scored. HectorIngram played a precise ball across the six-yard box for Jaanai Gordon who tapped into an empty goal. MATT LEE

ATHLETICS
Funding help on offer for Essex athletes
A
SPIRING athletes in Essex are being invited to apply for financial support to help them reach their potential. Active Essex, Essex County Council and Southend on Sea Borough Council are pleased to announce funding to continue supporting talented athletes. The 2016 round of “Inspired Athlete” funding is now open for applications and will be split between these potential Olympians, on the Road to Rio Olympics 2016 and other Essex athletes striving to improve their performance. Chairman of Active Essex, Gary Sullivan OBE, said: “In order to maximise the potential for athletes participating on the ‘Road to the Rio Olympics 2016,’ without compromising the support given to local athletes, we have decided, this year, to split the Inspired Athletes Award into two. “This affords us a great opportunity in the run up to next year’s Games to continue the legacy of London 2012 and inspire the next generation of Olympians and Paralympians.” Essex County Council’s Cabinet Member with responsibility for Sport and Physical Activity, Cllr Ray Gooding said: “The previous successes of our athletes demonstrate how vital this funding is for their development, and
Essex County Council is proud to back these strategies to keep our young Essex athletes continuing to develop towards the top of their sports.” Southend-on-Sea Borough Council’s Executive Councillor for Enterprise, Tourism and Economic Development, Councillor Graham Longley said: “These awards are a terrific way to support our promising local athletes, so we would encourage those eligible to apply. “The awards demonstrate how much we are rooting for our talented sports people, and how we want to do our very best to help them aim for the top. “At the same time, we also hugely value the contribution of our developing stars when they act as ambassadors so they can encourage and inspire others to reach for success too.” Applications are open to all athletes who were born, live or belong to a club in Essex or Southend. Athletes can access a grant between £500-£1,000 in the Inspired Athlete Award and £1,500 in the Rio award. The application process will focus on athletes identifying the areas in which they could improve their performance and how they could use the funding from this grant to address this. For example; a piece of equipment, additional
physiotherapy, additional strength and conditioning or DNA testing etc. Since the 2012 Olympics Active Essex has supported athletes throughout the county and Southend. The last six months have seen the current crop of Essex’s Inspired Athletes compete and excel on a number of
different levels performing at regional, national and even at European and World Championships. They have also attended a range of school and community events to help inspire the next generation of athletes. Applications are open now until 25 September and can be found on our
website http://www.activeessex.org/ funding/Inspired-Athletes/ along with guidance documents. All award recipients must also be prepared to commit to undertaking a programme of ambassadorial duties, within schools, school games events and/or community events.
