Danielle Glavin, Cancer Research UK spokesperson for the East of England, said: “We’re so excited to launch Dryathlon in September and we hope that men and women across the region will ditch the drink and take on this new challenge. “It’s the start of a new season so this is the perfect opportunity

to kick-start the month with a clear head. After a summer of boozy holidays and ‘one too many’ at weddings, we’re urging people to be dry and mighty and sign up to Dryathlon. We’re confident that men and women in the East will say ‘cheers’ to the challenge and help us bring forward the day when all cancers are cured.” Supporters can register to take part in the Dryathlon as individuals or set up a team and get their friends, colleagues or relatives involved to motivate each other along the way. And for those who find the one month challenge a bit too daunting,

there’s the ‘tipple tax’ which allows Dryathletes to donate a £20 penalty for each time they fall off the wagon. In January 2015, 54,000 people took part in the Dryathlon across the UK and helped raised a fantastic £5million. Every pound raised goes towards life-saving research. MERSEA ISLAND FESTIVAL

Action-packed festival for all THE Mersea Island Festival returns this year for its 35th year, from Sunday, August 23 to Monday, August 31, at the Essex Outdoors Mersea site. The festival, which is operated by the Mersea Island Festival Trust, is attended by friendship groups, clubs and families with disabled young people and provides an opportunity for those with and without a disability to try new activities, build selfconfidence, make new friends and have loads of fun! Places are available for the day, the weekend or the whole week. The programme includes a wide variety of activities including assisted climbing, zip wire, adventure course, archery, trampolining, water sports, art activities, circus skills, dance and band workshops, judo and quad bikes. Offsite there’s an opportunity to visit a farm, play golf, fish and go water skiing. In the evenings there are live bands, discos, a big screen cinema and camp concert. Tom Brennan, Chair of the Mersea Island Festival Trust said: “The Festival has become a must-do event for so many

people over the years. “There’s not many places a wheelchair user can go up a climbing wall and then down a zipwire, or out on an inflatable behind a speedboat, and it’s often mentioned that visitors get the chance to do things they would never otherwise do if they had not come to the Festival.” The weekend camp is from Friday August 28 to Monday August 31 (£150 per adult, £135 per under 18). The week camp is from Sunday August 23 to Friday

August 28 (£250 per adult, £225 per under 18). Day places are available from £30 per person. Prices include all activities, accommodation and meals. Railway crossing safety campaign

Network Rail issues a timely reminder to cyclists to take extra care this summer

S thousands of us take to two wheels during the summer holidays on days out or cycling breaks, Network Rail is urging cyclists to take extra care as they bike through the countryside. Britain’s level crossings are among the safest in the world, but injuries and near misses still happen regularly. In the last five years there have been around 140 incidents involving cyclists with four of these tragically being fatal. The safety campaign backed by Sustrans, the charity behind the creation and management of the 14,000-mile National Cycle Network, encourages safer cycling behaviour to keep cyclists and their bikes from harm at level crossings. The campaign reminds cyclists to: dismount at footpath crossings, take notice of the amber warning lights at road level crossings which mean ‘stop - a train is coming’, to not wear headphones as they can be a distraction and may mean the wearer doesn’t hear the alarms sounded at level crossings or by an oncoming train.

Huw Davies, Sustrans National Cycle Network Director said: “With there being thousands of crossings on roads and cycle routes it’s important that when the public are out and about this summer they are aware of how to use these crossings in a safe and sensible manner. Level crossings can be confusing to people who aren’t used to them, but by following a few simple rules, people can learn how to cross them with safety and confidence.”

SAINT FRANCIS HOSPICE

Celebrating 31 years of care

AINT Francis Hospice celebrated its 31st birthday last week with a special service attended by the Mayors and Mayoresses of Havering and Barking & Dagenham and a number of the hospice’s Trustees. Saint Francis Hospice opened its doors on July 23, 1984 in Havering-atte-Bower, after it was identified at a community health meeting that there was a need for better care for local people with a life-limiting illness such as cancer. The opening followed nine years of individuals and organisations rallying around raising funds and managing the development. Pam Court, the hospice’s CEO said: “The hospice has grown from caring for around 200 people in 1984, to more than 4,000 people today with the majorty of our patients supported in their own homes, which is where they want to be.” The charity today employs 150 nurses, doctors

and specialist healthcare staff who are supported by 800 volunteers and provides all of its services free of charge. The hospice’s recently retired chaplain Graham Laut returned to lead the service that was attended by the Mayors and Mayoresses and Trustees Paul Gwinn (a director of Dagenham & Redbridge Football Club), Peter Batt (Divisional Managing Director for the Co-operative) and Stephen Roome (Finance Director of Roomes Furniture and Interiors store in Upminster), who all spoke of their work for the hospice. Paul Gwinn noted the amazing fundraising efforts that the charity makes to raise over £7 million each year from the local community. “I would like to congratulate the team on their hard work and invaluable contribution they make to financing the wonderful work the hospice does,” said Paul.

Curtain raising shows Chelmsford City Theatres Autumn lineup offers audiences a variety of entertainment

By submitting an image of your ‘home of sport’ be it Essex County Cricket Club, Chelmsford, or a hidden gem of a village cricket green - you can help decide the jewel in England’s sporting crown, no mean feat in a country that is world-renowned for its sporting heritage. has already drawn in over 2,000 nominations. Criteria for the winning destination will include: breadth of sporting experiences, diverse and beautiful backdrops and interesting sports trivia or claims to fame. HE sixth annual RHS Hyde Hall Flower Show runs from today, Thursday July 30, until Sunday August 2, 2015. A charity from the heart

Gemma and Mark Firth’s lives were turned upside down when they faced the devastating news that Mark had been diagnosed with Hodgkins Lymphoma, an uncommon cancer that develops in the lymphatic system.

EMMA never dreamt that she would become a carer for her husband who had recently celebrated his 30th birthday. The couple were looking forward to the next stage of their lives together and were about to embark on their journey towards family life and were starting IVF treatment. The shock news that Mark had cancer dealt a raw blow. Gemma soon became a carer and supporter as well as a wife. But whilst people may have thought she was coping, inside she was in complete shock and didn’t want to accept what was happening, however she knew that she needed to stay strong for Mark’s sake. During Mark’s treatment Gemma had an amazing support network of family and friends, yet despite this she felt incredibly alone. All she wanted was to talk to somebody that knew how she was feeling. Gemma soon realised that there are many thousands of people in the same position as her, caring for those suffering from all illnesses not just cancers. She consequently established Never Alone an online charity, to offer those individuals an on-line support network. “Many people forget about the effect a loved one’s illness can have on the people that are closest to them. Carers often do not want to burden others with their problems, even if they are really struggling,” Gemma explains. “As a result, many carers do not seek the support and help they require at their time of need. Never Alone aims to change this by providing a platform where carers can go to talk about what they are facing with other individuals who are in the same position.” Gemma continues: “After Mark’s diagnosis I knew that I had to be strong for him, even though I’d never felt so alone. There’s nothing that can prepare you for this type of news. I hope to reach out to even

If you do Google searches so much information comes up that it can be not only scary but daunting as well. By having one site with an easy to follow information page, I hope it helps people feel less lost in a minefield of information on top of the terrifying news that your loved one has cancer. Therefore Never Alone was born, my younger sister Victoria came up with the name which I felt was very fitting. It was registered as a charity on October 3, 2011. The website offers a wide range of group chats with specific and varying topics so that no matter what a carer is facing, they’ll never feel alone.

We spoke to Gemma to find out more about Never Alone, Mark’s remission and how she aims to support even more carers. How did you go about starting up Never Alone? I had been researching various forums/chat rooms for people who were carers and realised that there wasn’t one completely dedicated to carers to talk online, especially one that was free. Although I had an amazing support network around me of family and friends and I could talk to them about anything, there were times when I actually wanted to vent or speak to someone who didn’t know me and therefore had

no emotional connection to me but knew what I was going through. I wanted to put a support

How did your life change after Mark’s diagnosis? To be honest I don’t really know,

everything happened so quickly as we were just about to embark on our first round of IVF in Sweden. We got told that Mark had lumps under his arms and in his neck, and that led to a CT scan which presented a mass in his chest pushing on his windpipe. He was then booked in for a biopsy the Thursday before we were due to go away, then on the Tuesday we got a phonecall to say that it was Hodgkins Lymphoma. Mark had Chemotherapy every other Friday for six months, but it just became a part of our lives, and our way of coping with it was to just laugh through it. We entertained ourselves during his day sessions with TV shows, making each other laugh and keeping the nurses entertained. They also made the process a lot easier by their kindness and exceptional care. I think I was able to get through it because of Mark’s amazing strength, he remained positive throughout the whole process and was truly inspirational in the way that he attacked his treatment and his cancer, I am so very proud of him and how he coped with it all and took on cancer and beat it. What is life like now? Life now is amazing, we have three incredible children, twin daughters who are 2 and a half, and a son who is 10 months old. We could never have dreamed that we would have three amazing children after the heartache of two failed IVF attempts and Mark having cancer, but we have come through the other side stronger with an incredible family and the future to look forward to, I just wish this was the case for everyone who has been diagnosed with cancer.

Jackie Tyrrell gives us her top tips on how to Feng Shui your Children’s rooms

HILDREN’S rooms can be a challenge as they often need to fulfil two opposing functions – sleep and play. Children’s rooms should also support them and their needs as they grow. Where a room is shared, each child should have a private space within it that they feel is their own. The energy of the east with the rising sun in the morning is ideal for children. The west with the setting sun at night is good for hyperactive children who cannot settle, although this direction is normally better for elderly people to sleep in. The heads of the beds should face their supportive directions, although this is not always possible when there is more than one child in the room. It is more important that they should feel safe, and a view of the door is essential for children. Rooms with dark corners which house strange shapes and cast shadows on the walls can prove disturbing for young children with vivid imaginations.

Beds

Wooden beds are preferable because they do not pick up electromagnetic radiation. Bunk beds are not considered suitable since they depress the chi, both of the child on top who is close to the ceiling and the one underneath who has

a body above, often a fidgety one. Canopies over the bed have the same effect and can also harbour dust. Cupboards and beams can also have a debilitating effect. Children’s beds should have a headboard and should not back on to a window or a door.

As children grow mentally, as well as physically, part of the learning process is to be able to make choices. Children instinctively know the type of energy they require to support them and should be allowed to design their own bedrooms and have a

major say in the decoration and colours, even if it is not to the parents’ taste. We can always shut the door and we should respect it when it is shut. Children need their privacy as we do and if we set an example by knocking and asking permission to enter,

then we can expect the same in return. If there is a family room or playroom elsewhere, then excessive stimulation in the form of toys should not be a problem in the bedroom. When the room serves a dual purpose, create a separate sleeping area and provide storage for toys to be put away out of sight at night.

Furnishings

If the floor is hard, a soft rug by the bed is welcoming in the morning and will give a gentle start to the day. If your child has chosen the colours, you can select shades and hues to suit the child’s personality – cooler ones to balance an active child and brighter ones to stimulate a more reticent personality. These days most children have their own television sets in their rooms and this inevitably isolates them from their families and hampers social interaction outside.

Apart from this consideration, the electromagnetic radiation from TV’s and computers in children’s bedrooms is a cause for concern. Where possible remove all electrical items from children’s rooms and relocate them in other areas of the house. If this cannot be done ensure electrical items are switched off at the mains at night and not left on standby if they are close to a sleeping area.

Teenagers’ Rooms

Teenagers’ rooms are evolving places where children who are growing into adults can express themselves. The needs and tastes of a thirteen year old are very different from those of a seventeen or eighteen year old and the room may be changed on almost an annual basis. Some principles will remain constant however. We can encourage our child to place their beds in an auspicious position and introduce them to Feng Shui, which they may

come to regard as a help when they encounter some of the usual trials of growing up. If possible hold out against a television in the bedroom and encourage the use of family rooms. Try Something New….and earn Not long after starting her first year University course studying Zoology at Bangor, student Bethany Kiamil, 19, originally from Leigh-on-Sea, became aware how expensive it is to live independently as a student and wanted to earn some extra income whilst also saving for the holidays. in Essex. When she first started up her Avon business she begun by going out and about in Bangor to build her customer base. • Change one or two things every week so as not to overload yourself. It can be as simple as switching from using margarine to butter and reducing three cups of coffee a day to two cups of coffee.

• Stay away from processed and readymade meals....even the ones which say they are good for you. These are full of sugar, fat and nasty additives. If something says low fat it does not mean it is good for you - there will be added sugar, salt or chemicals to replace the fat. These things will not only effect weightloss but also the look and feel of your skin and hair and not in a good way!

• Nutrient content of food is just as important as calories so don’t focus on just reducing your food intake but more importantly the quality and type of food and drink you are including in your diet. Feeling hungry (after meals or times when you shouldn’t) is not good. This will lead to cravings and will actually reduce the fat burning effect. Make sure you eat little and often.

• Always eating breakfast is very important. It helps your blood sugar levels to remain stable (depending on what you eat of course) throughout the day. Skipping breakfast can lead to both unneeded snacking and an increase in cravings throughout the day as well. • If you feel as if you need to snack all the time I would look at your meals - are you getting enough protein and fibre? Are you really thirsty? If you have cravings for something particular over a period of time this is often a sign you are missing a vital nutrient from your diet. I would recommend people snack on carrot and cucumber sticks with some hummus, nuts and seeds, or a piece of fruit. Homemade protein balls are great as well. Spring onion & Chinese leaf colcannon

Serves: 2 Preparation time: 5 minutes Cooking time: 30 minutes

Ingredients: 350g Desiree potatoes (or other floury potatoes) 40g butter Âź Chinese leaf lettuce, finely shredded 4 spring onions, finely sliced 2 tbsp single cream Pinch nutmeg Salt and pepper (to season) Method: Peel the potatoes and chop into

evenly sized chunks. Boil a kettle and pour the water into a large saucepan. Carefully tip in the potatoes, bring back to the boil and simmer for approx 20 minutes until they are tender all the way through. Drain and set aside in the saucepan to steam dry. Melt half the butter in a frying pan and stir fry the Chinese leaf until soft and browning at the edges. Add the spring onion and cook for a further minute then sprinkle in the nutmeg and season. Add the remaining butter to the potatoes along with the cream and use a hand whisk to beat until smooth. Stir in the Chinese leaf and spring onion mixture, taste and season.

Method: In a large wok, heat the oil until very hot and cook the pork strips, tossing and stirring throughout. Add the garlic and ginger, stir and then add the celery and radish. Continue to stir while adding the rice, Chinese leaf lettuce and spring onions. Add in the soy, hot sauce and mirin and stir while everything cooks. The vegetables should keep a good crunch. Serve sprinkled with ses-ame seeds.

Mix together the oil, mustard, honey and lemon juice and season. On a large plate, lay out the sliced vegetables, then top with the walnuts and the dressing.

This tasty Asian inspired salad packs a real crunch thanks to the celery, radishes, spring onions and Chinese leaf lettuce. Make it up the night before for a quick, easy and delicious lunch on the go. Serves: 1 Preparation time: 10 minutes

Ingredients: For the dressing 1 tbsp peanut butter 2 tsp soy sauce 2 tsp Sesame oil ½ tsp chilli flakes 1 tsp rice wine vinegar Water For the salad 100g fresh egg or udon noodles 1 stick of celery, sliced 4 radishes, sliced into wedges Large handful of frozen soya beans 3 leaves of Chinese leaf

lettuce, finely shredded 1 spring onion, sliced Method: In a bowl whisk all the dressing ingredients with a splash of water until smooth. Pour into the bottom of the jar. Defrost the soya beans in boiling water then drain. Layer the noodles on top of the dressing, then the celery and radish, then soya beans and top with the crunchy spring onions and Chinese leaf lettuce. To serve, tip everything into a bowl and give a good stir.

Ingredients: 25g butter 1 stick of celery, finely diced 1 clove garlic, crushed 175g Arborio rice 100ml white wine 750ml vegetable or chicken stock, hot 6 asparagus spears, chopped into 1cm rounds, tips kept whole 3 spring onions, sliced 50g Parmesan cheese, grated Method: Melt the butter in a large, heavy based saucepan. On a medium heat cook the

celery for 5 minutes until it becomes tender, then add the garlic, then the rice and stir to coat. Cook for 1-2 minutes. Pour in the wine and stir until absorbed. Pour in half of the hot stock, stir well and simmer stirring occasionally. Once the stock is almost absorbed, pour in half of the remaining stock and continue to cook. Add the asparagus and spring onions and half the remaining stock. Continue adding half of the remaining stock and stirring until the rice is cooked with a slight bite in the centre and not mushy. The risotto should be wet with a creamy sauce. Remove from the heat, stir in half of the Parmesan and some black pepper, check the seasoning and adjust as necessary.

Electric Kia wins Autovolt’s award KIA’S first all-electric car, the Soul EV, has been awarded Best Small Family Car by AutoVolt in its annual awards. Improved NVH measures also make the cabin a much quieter and calmer place. The introduction of the Toyota Safety Sense package of safety features has had a significant impact on new Avensis’s insurance ratings, with improvements of up to five groups achieved compared to the previous model. This means Avensis now equals the best in its class in terms of insurance costs, with the added benefit of Toyota’s advanced technologies to help

prevent accidents happening. Toyota Safety Sense provides a laser-controlled Pre-Crash Safety system with Autonomous Emergency Braking; on all Avensis models apart from the entry-level Active, it also equips the car with Automatic High Beam headlights, Road Sign Assist and Lane Departure Alert. Avensis has two fleet-friendly D-4D diesel engines at the heart of its range: a 110bhp 1.6 unit and a new 141bhp 2.0-litre, making its Toyota debut.

The 1.6 has an official CO2 emissions rating of 131g/km, helping secure a first-year 19 per cent benefitin-kind company car tax rating; producing 148g/km, the 2.0-litre has an initial 21 per cent BiK rate. This performance adds to Avensis’s competitiveness in the fleet arena supported by savings on fuel costs thanks to combined cycle consumption figures from 67.3mpg for the 1.6 and 62.8mpg for the 2.0-litre.

‘Failure to look’ tops accident list THE Institute of Advanced Motorists (IAM) has identified that once again ‘‘failure to look properly’’ is the most common contributory factor included in over 30,000 vehicle accidents a year, following a Freedom of Information request to the Department for Transport. Police can record up to six contributory factors from a list of 77 for each incident to explain why they think a crash took place, but the top two give the most obvious reasons for the incident. Analysis of the contributory factor combinations shows that top of the list was ‘‘failure to look properly’’ combined with a ‘‘failure to judge another person’s path or speed.’’ These two together were responsible for 13,299 accidents, or 7% of the total number. Next up was ‘‘failure to look properly’’ combined with ‘‘carelessness or recklessness,’’ or ‘‘judged to be in a hurry.’’ These totalled 9,132, 5% of the total. Other reasons to emerge from the data were more than 3,000 accidents caused by ’’slippery roads due to weather conditions’’ combined with ‘‘loss of vehicle control’’ (number seven on the list) and 1,470 accidents caused by ‘‘excessive speed’’ combined with ‘‘losing control of the vehicle.’’

Failure to look appears twice more in the top 20 with ‘‘aggressive driving’’ combined with ‘‘carelessness or recklessness,’’ or ‘‘judged to be in a hurry’’ bottom of the list. These were the cause of 1,418 accidents. Sarah Sillars, IAM chief executive officer, said: “These figures show conclusively that simple human errors continue to cause the majority of accidents. Drivers cannot blame something or someone else for a collision happening, it is down to every one of us to make a difference. “We feel that many people eventually get complacent behind the wheel and inattention creeps in. Combine this with fatigue and distractions, inside and outside the vehicle and the message is clear that drivers must apply their full attention to driving.’’ Recently the Department for Transport (DfT) published the latest accident statistics for Britain which showed overall casualties have risen for the first time in 18 years. The figures show there were 1,775 reported road deaths in 2014, an increase of 4% compared with 2013. The number of those killed or seriously injured in Britain increased by 5% to 24,582. There were a total of 194,477 casualties of all severities, an increase of 6% - the first increase in overall casualties since 1997.

CHRIS MANNING having a towing capacity of 1,500kg, it fell well within my caravans all up weight of 1,300kg and its 1.6-litre diesel engine producing 120PS of power and more importantly for towing matters a healthy 320Nm of torque proved to be willing performer. Performance figures are good, with a 0-60 time of 11.4 seconds, CO2 level of 111 g/ km and official combined fuel consumption figure of 67.2. First gear on the six-speed manual gearbox was a touch on the low side, and until you mastered it with a bit more revs on take off, it was easy to stall with the caravan on the back. Going solo presented no problems though. With the ALLGRIP fourwheel-drive system having four settings of Auto, Sport, Snow and Lock, I found that the Sport mode was the best one for towing as it increases

One wicket denies Chelmsford Gilchrist make GB debut a clean sweep of match results

T WAS nearly a perfect day for Chelmsford on Saturday as they won five games and were one wicket away from making it six. Excellent batting from James Clifford and Chris Prowting kept the first team on track, Mark Drain’s six wicket haul made it a short day for the seconds. Jack Campion with six wickets in the fifth team and Matt Cole with a century in the sixth team were the others to stand out. The firsts were in serious trouble early on at Harold Wood as they slumped to 42 for five. The innings was closed out quickly as well but the middle part in which Chris Prowting (60) and James Clifford (75) were batting was superb. Chowdhury (5-25) did much of the damage but Chelmsford would have been happy with 204 and Harold Wood only managed to get halfway to that with wickets for Karamat Ali, Aaron Beard, Sam Cook and Clifford. Mark Drain dominated the second team fixture with six for 19 as Southend & EMT were shot out for 55. Harry Green took two for

4 on his debut to help finish things off. A couple of wickets fell before the target was passed but the game was over before tea arrived in other fixtures. The thirds, fourths and fifths were all matched up with Upminster and Chelmsford had the better of things with two wins and the better of a draw. After a couple of poor weeks, the thirds turned in a stronger performance but resistance from the lower order left them disappointed. Chris Drain (44) and Matt Davis (44) dug in to give some framework for the innings with Govani (3-46) bowling well. Upminster never really got into the chase and only got a bonus point as Chelmsford’s attacking fields allowed runs to flow, Davis and Alistair Fergus took three wickets apiece. Experience was the vital factor as the fourth team made it five wins on the spin. James (63) was the only batsman to make an impression as Upminster struggled to 117. As usual, Neil Raisborough (4-36) was excellent. Paul Keaney (59*) played

the match winning innings and with support from Andy Rycroft (29) took Chelmsford past the target after a poor start. Jack Campion’s six-wicket haul ensured a comfortable win for the fifth team. Teenagers Jay Smith (86) and Ben Turner (53) played well with Micky Burns (46) also making an important contribution to Chelmsford’s 244 for five. Upminster were bowled out for 122 in reply, Campion’s six costing 30 runs with Alex Bailey bagging a brace. It was mainly a good day for the Coles against Old Chelmsfordians. Ed Cole played very well to make 78 but might have left slightly annoyed that his thunder was stolen by younger brother Matt who hit a century (112) as Chelmsford amassed 260 for three. Father Andy might have been prouder if one of his sons had not run him out. Wickets were shared about as Chelmsford defended the score comfortably. The weather forecast suggested that there would not be any cricket on Sunday and the forecast was correct.

FORMER Leopard Robert Gilchrist scored 12 points and pulled down four rebounds on his Great Britain debut but he couldn’t prevent New Zealand taking a 84-63 victory on Saturday at the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park, London. Gilchrist was a surprise starter for a youthful GB team but although he ceased the opportunity, he admitted that he was disappointed with the final scoreline: “It was great to play and we did well in the first half,” he said. “But we need more consistency and that’s something we need to work on before we go to Holland. CHELMSFORD continued their string of wins with what turned out to be a comfortable victory against strugglers Harold Wood, with two excellent comebacks both with the bat and in the field. Chelmsford immediately found it difficult to get going against some very good seam bowling. After some loose shots and some misjudged leaves against a strong attack, Chelmsford were in severe trouble at 42 for five. This left Chris Prowting and James Clifford with the job of rebuilding the innings. After both had reached half-centuries and the scoring rate had increased further, at 165 for five with 14 overs to go, a score of in excess of 250 looked possible. This was not to be the case as young leg-spinner Afzal intervened to remove both; Clifford for 75, Prowting for 60. This immediately stunted the scoring as wickets fell against the returning Chowdhury (5-25), although Ali (26*) added some late runs. As he has done regularly this year, Sam Cook (2-14) struck in the first over to remove one opening batsman, before

an outstanding diving one-handed catch at mid-on from Ollie Devenish brought Cook a second wicket. Aaron Beard struck in his first over and was beginning to fire himself up, unleashing some lethal deliveries that were flying through to keeper Prowting. The fourth wicket partnership remained firm, with opener Ahmed hanging around and Khan (27) looking to take the attack to the spinners who took one chance too many, looping an easy catch off James Clifford to Sam Cook at point. Within seven overs, the Southend innings was in ruins at 11 for four. After Tom Halsey, with a smart pick-up and throw inflicted a needless run-out, Drain removed the top order with

three for 4 in his first four overs. U16 colt, Harry Green, making his debut, was introduced as first change after 13 overs with Southend having struggled to 36 for four and took his first wicket at this level with his fourth ball. Green picked up his second wicket to finish with impressive figures of two for 4 from 6 overs, and Halsey bowled the last man to round off the innings on 55 all out in 24.3 overs. Chelmsford knocked off the runs in 11 overs for the loss of two wickets, with Rob Catchpole (25) and Lee Cranmer (17no) to the fore. 3RD TEAM

A MUCH improved performance went unrewarded in terms of points for the third team. Chelmsford gambled on batting first on a damp pitch. That looked like it could be a disaster as the two in-form players who had come into the side were dismissed inside four overs. From 5 for two, Matt Davis and Chris Drain dug in and really grafted to rebuild things. Davis was able to score more freely helped by his left-handedness and by

Drain’s willingness to run singles from the non-strikers end. Having provided some important impetus, Davis perished through over ambition to be caught for 44. Drain continued to accumulate but lost a couple more partners before eventually being out himself for a hard fought 44. Stephen Drain (23) played some excellent shots but was run out by a superb bit of fielding. At 140 for nine with a few overs to go, it looked like a struggle to make 150 but Craig Thompson and Neal Abhyankar did a superb job; Abhyankar (22*) did particularly well. The Upminster innings started very slowly with Chelmsford’s openers bowling well and there was frustration as several chances were spurned. Stephen Drain made the breakthrough and pressure told as Alistair Fergus picked up two wickets before a poor run out handed Chelmsford a fourth wicket. The wicket of Bussey (25) gave Chelmsford more than ten overs with just two wickets to take but Upminster’s captain D’Cruz dug in. However Sagoo continued to play shots and offered a chance that was spurned early on. He had done most of the work to get Upminster to a bonus point at 125 but with only two needed from

16 balls he went for another big shot and was well caught by Tom Arnold from Fergus (3-32). That gave 15 balls at the last pair but the bowlers could not make the breakthrough on a slow pitch. 4TH TEAM

Lynn takes victory in Hungary

UNMOW racing driver Alex Lynn has taken another step in his eventual aim of becoming a Formula One racing driver by taking his first win in GP2 Series at the Hungaroring. The GP2 Series is a support race for Formula One, and Lynn is already undertaking a role as development driver for the Williams F1 team. His first victory in Hungary started with free practice, with third fastest, and the DAMS team set to work to improve the car for official practice, which paid off as he took pole position with an unusual strategy. Lynn took the decision to go out in the middle of the session on fresh tyres and a nail a lap on a clear track while everyone else was in the pits. He said: “I did it just right, banged in the lap on a clear track and that gave me pole. It was a bit risky because somebody could have come out just after me on a slow lap when I was on my flier and delayed me.’’ The DAMS went for a riskier strategy in race one of starting on the prime, harder tyres a gamble because you could always get scuppered by a

safety car. There was a safety car, but thankfully it came just early enough for none of those to have started on the soft option tyre to make their stop under caution. It was touch-and-go at middistance because Lynn’s pace on the medium tyres wasn’t great compared to rival Stoffel, who by now had switched to the medium and was flying with them being fresh. Lynn pitted with 15 laps to go, which was very early to take the option tyres, and when he came out couldn’t see championship leader Stoffel as he was about two corners in front. Lynn thought that the gamble had not paid off, but the options gave loads of grip and kept getting better and better. He still needed to pass Stoffel and Rio Haryanto, but once into a rhythm made it into a clear-cut victory. After, Lynn said: “Races like that are really important for my career, and it felt so nice to put it all together on a weekend. I’ve said quite a lot this year that when we do that we’ll be there, but at the same time everyone was still waiting to see it… It’s a real weight off my shoulders

A Tour of hitches for Dowsett MALDON cycling star Alex Dowsett had to abandon the Tour de France on stage 12 last Thursday, bringing to an end his torrid debut in the race. The British time trial champion struggled through much of the first week after a crash on stage four, which required six stitches to his elbow, before losing more time in the mountain stages after the rest day. Dowsett finished in a group 21 minutes behind winner Chris Froome on the first mountain on stage 10, and then only just finished inside the time cut on stage 11 over the Tourmalet – coming in on his own 33 minutes behind the winner. On stage 12 the Essex Movistar rider called it a day alongside fellow struggler Zak Dempster after being dropped from the peloton on the first climb of the day. Dowsett admitted before the
