Revival of vintage motorsport event in brief
I
F you’re a car enthusiast and owner of a vintage motor car, there’s still time to enter a revival of one of Britain’s earliest motorsport events. The Layer Marney Cup, a fuel efficiency trial through Essex, first took place on June 6, 1914 and was won by FC Byford who achieved an average of 42.26 miles per gallon in his Unic. To create a level playing field amongst the varying sizes of the entrant’s vehicles, the organisers weighed the cars and set the Ton Miles Per Gallon rule, by which the impressive trophy was ultimately awarded. The Cup is being re-run on August 16, 2015 from 10.30am, featuring a whole host of vintage machinery from across the decades since. Organiser Sheila Charrington says there’s still time to enter and they are particularly on the look-out for cars from four different eras. 1915-1925, 1936-1945, 1966-1975
and 1986-1995. Two of the latest cars to be entered reflect British engineering at its finest from two very different eras. “Philip Clegg’s 1926 Rolls Royce is an absolute cracker,” explains Sheila. “It is quite beautiful but we also have a lovely 1956 Morris Minor on absolutely pristine condition. It belongs to Michael Gutsell and was originally bought by his aunt. He still has the original bill of sale and details of the garage that sold it. So as a piece of genuinely local motoring history, Michael has a real gem.” Starting in Southend, the latter day Layer Marney Cup will leave Southchurch Park, pass through Shoeburyness before heading up to Stow Maries Airfield, where lunch will be served in the original Officers’ Mess. In timehonoured fashion, the cars will be weighed at Stow Maries and will then continue on to Promenade Park, Maldon, before completing the event

FOOD SAFETY
Ensure safe BBQ cooking this summer
A
S the school summer holidays get into full swing, a survey has found that the humble chicken is likely to be in high demand on barbecues in the East of England. Bangers and burgers have lost out as 31% of people in the East of England named chicken as their top pick. Encouragingly 25% of people in the East of England said they take extra care when cooking chicken on the barbecue. However 29% said they never worry about it, despite the fact that over a quarter of a million people fall ill every year due to campylobactor, the bug often carried on raw poultry. The poll by the Food Standards Agency (FSA) aims to promote the Chicken Challenge - the FSA’s campaign to encourage everyone to do their bit to reduce the number of people who get food poisoning from chicken every year. Kevin Hargin, Head of Foodborne Disease at the Food Standards Agency, commented: “We all want to serve up a sensational barbecue that also helps keep our family and friends safe. Although it’s great to be spontaneous, it’s safer and easier on the day if you prepare in advance by following simple measures such as pre-cooking chicken in the oven before putting it on the BBQ to ensure it’s cooked through and avoiding cross-comamination of raw meats.”

The J’s Hospice –
transforming young lives
Nikki Perry, Communications Manager at The J’s tells us more about the inspirational charity that offers a special kind of care
T
HE J’s Hospice has been developed through the drive and vision of the local community to see enhanced care and support for young adults aged 16-40 across Essex with life limiting conditions such as cancer and a wide range of complex neurological and metabolic conditions.
The charity was formed in memory of Jonathan Whiffin who was diagnosed with Duchenne muscular dystrophy at just three years-old. Jonathan used children’s hospices from the age of 14 to the time he died. He was a fun-loving, outdoors typical teenager who enjoyed socialising with people of all ages. His greatest love was dolphins and The J’s logo represents this. During his teen years, his mum Denise realised there was a dire need for hospice and respite care once young adults outgrew
come into our home to provide nursing and care support. This means that we have the lovely Stephanie and Mary. Now Jess gets the privilege of them at home and her little routine is not interrupted whilst I get the chance to have a little break. If I’m really clever and organised I can try to tie in the shifts of Mary and Steph
children’s hospices. Whatever their circumstances, young adults have the right to expect equality of access to the physical environment and all other aspects of society. The J’s provides tailored specialist nursing, respite and end of life care, advice and advocacy, emotional care, bereavement support and a range of activities for the young adult and their family in the comfort and security of their own home. Our aim is to encourage young adults throughout the county to live life to the full, however short. The population of young adults with life limiting conditions is growing due to advances in medical care and improved technology, but there are very few dedicated services for this sector. The J’s is the first home-based service in the UK with ageappropriate delivery of hospice and respite care for this age group. It really does make such a difference to the patients to be treated as young adults - to be allowed informed choices about their treatment and to be given the
opportunity to experience social outings, home comforts alongside the security of specialist nursing and respite care. Jessie, 18, has been a patient of The J’s for over a year now and suffers from complex and life threatening healthcare needs. She received respite and nursing care from our specialist transition team. Her mum Jane outlines the difference this has made to their lives: “I’m incredibly lucky to be the very proud mother to a beautiful young lady and a young man! Jessie is 18 and Tom is 21. Both come with different challenges and need different support at different stages in their lives, it’s all part of the growing up process! The only difference is that for some reason with Jessie,

this is called ‘transition’?! “Jessie has life threatening complex health needs and has profound and multiple learning difficulties (I can’t stand this label!) other labels include: Scoliosis, Septo optic dysplasia, microcephally, wheel chair user, non verbal, epileptic... the list goes on... “To me she’s just the light of my life... Jess is Just Jess! My beautiful, giggly gorgeous girl! “Things have changed for us as a family since Jess turned 16. When Jess started 6th form we met Sue Greenwood from The J’s! This has made a big difference to our lives because at the moment once a month we have The J’s
finishing simultaneously with Mikila who is a paediatric nurse starting. This is an extra-special treat which means that I can go and do something different and exciting! So I might be able to jump on the train and go into London to the theatre or go to the cinema instead of going to Tesco’s to do my weekly shop! I’ve even been to Southwold for a rare seaside trip, as it’s really difficult to take Jess to the seaside due to the lack of accessible beaches. I also work locally for a national charity, so my days are spent supporting and helping parents of kids with special educational needs, as well as supporting, caring, fighting and writing for my own princess. So these monthly short breaks are essential to refuelling and
injecting some energy back into caring. They are life saving. “Jessie left school at the end of May. So she will have a few spare days during which I’m hoping The J’s will be able to support her. The plan is for Jessie to start Chelmsford College for a couple of days a week from September. We’re really hoping that The (super!) J’s will continue to spring into action and support us in helping to recruit nurses to support Jessie in attending. The world is looking very bright for Jessie with lots of exciting times and opportunities coming her way. “The truth is that I expect nothing less for Jess as I do for her brother, who’s off to the US and Uni... This gorgeous, beautiful girl of mine is entitled to a wonderful fulfilling life as much as her brother and any one of us and I for one will ensure that she gets it with the help of The fabulous J’s and their amazing team,” concludes Jane. There are lots of ways in which you can support The J’s. Throughout the year there are a number of events that you, your family, your friends and your neighbours can be a part of. Whether you are a keen (or not so keen) cyclist, fancy yourself as the next Celine Dion or just want to join with others to promote and raise funds for a great cause there’s an event for you. HEN planning your first backpacking trip it is crucial to take everything into consideration. It is inevitable that throughout the preparation process you will end up tearing your hair out and reconsidering the whole thing. For the first time traveller it is easy to resort to the basic template of what to remember, unaware that the little things are sometimes just as important as knowing your train routes and securing that place at a hostel. Below are some valuable yet minor details that even the most organised person might not consider but will leave you in the know! As time is precious travelling through the night is the first way to ensure you get the most out of your days, especially if your journey is longer than seven hours. If you are planning a night train make sure you reserve a bed. Arriving at your train for 10pm ready for a proper nights sleep only to discover you have a seat stuck between two strangers, you will not be a happy bunny the next day. Decent nights’ sleep are crucial, so even though a night train may save you time and money, if there are no beds available resort back to the trusty hostel! After the initial excitement of being on a train in Europe, boredom hits you, even a three hour journey
from Vienna to Budapest can The Panama Canal start to drag. Make sure you have enough distractions for the journey, if you are a reader, take a book that you don’t mind leaving behind. Leaving your book at a hostel means fellow travellers can drop and pick up a new book. Even though a kindle seems ideal, its best to avoid taking valuables. Using the time to nap and listen to music are also useful ways in making sure left carrying around all the extra you get the relaxation time change. You can always go back to you need. the cashpoint if needed. If you are hopping back and forth Drop your backpack off at your to different countries that require hostel to avoid being weighed down, different currencies, instead of its exhausting and slows you down, wasting time looking for a currency inevitably cutting into your valuable exchange office, make use of the sight seeing time. cash points at the station as soon Invest in a smaller back pack for as you arrive at your destination. Get out too little than too much, that during the day which can hold your essentials. This may seem obvious way if you under spend you aren’t

but over estimating what you really need is always a rookie error! Stick to money, water, sunglasses, camera, phone, map and passport! Furthermore, when packing your main backpack be sure to pack as minimal clothes as possible to keep the load down. Another tip, most hostels provide washing facilities but don’t always bargain on it! Pack a mini hand wash detergent, washing your clothes by hand may be your only option! While you’re at the hostel take the time to ask the reception on where the best places to visit are and nip them in the bud first. This way you can save valuable time and you don’t miss out! Hostels also provide maps, so remember to pick it up before you set off, google maps won’t save
you as you won’t necessarily have access to the internet! It is easy for a first time traveller to want to make the most out of their inter-rail ticket and go to as many countries as possible. From

experience, it’s not the best thing to do! It is essential that you don’t try and cram in everything, make sure you have a sufficient amount of time in each place so you aren’t rushing around. Travelling is still meant to be a holiday after all! Choose a suitable travel buddy, if you’re a morning person and active at the break of dawn and your fellow traveller is a night owl who prefers a lie in and hard core partying, maybe re-consider your options of who to set off on your travels with. Lastly, all the physical exercise can result in the need to snack throughout the day, it’s advised to bring a reasonable amount of dry foods from home. This includes dried fruit, cereal bars, crisps and nuts, food that is filling, doesn’t go off but more importantly light and manageable to carry in your main backpack. As it is advisable to bring enough supplies that will last you the whole trip, depending how long you’re travelling of course! This manages your spending and takes the pressure off you hunting down a cheap supermarket!

AVE you ever searched for a word, a phrase, a name – it’s lurking right on the tip of your tongue, but no matter how hard you try, it just won’t come to you? In fact, the harder you try to coax it out, the further it seems to recede into shadow. And then, hours, maybe even days later, it leaps into your head. If so, you’re not alone. The “tip of the tongue” phenomenon is very real, very common, and a subject of interest to science; studies not only confirm the pattern of remembering when you stop trying, but also that you can use this paradox strategically: if you can’t find a word, quit looking for it – it’ll come to you in time. People often turn to travel to find something; not a word or a phrase, but to find themselves. The “voyage of self-discovery” is a time-tested travel literature trope that still moves books off shelves. Whether you’re eating, praying and loving your way around the world, giving yourself up to the wild, or building a new life under the Tuscan sun, the take-home message from many popular travel memoirs seems to be this: go seek yourself out there. Sounds simple enough. But if you ask a room full of experienced travellers, a more nuanced picture emerges: all will be able to point to at least one transformative experience while travelling, but in almost every case they will have had this experience when they were least expecting it. The people that have travelled with
the intention of finding themselves have generally failed – or only succeeded the moment they threw in the towel. Travel literature contains countless such stories, and not just in regards to self-discovery: quests that succeed just as they’re abandoned; love that blossoms when the protagonist decides to stop seeking it. ‘I came closest to the real Nepal when least I sought it,’ said travel writer Pico Iyer in Video Night in Kathmandu. While the search for a tip-of-the-tongue word, looking for love, and a voyage of self-discovery are fundamentally different quests, there’s a pattern that seems to speak to a quirk in our wiring: when we search too intently for something, we get stuck. We subconsciously block ourselves. ‘The best way to find yourself is to lose yourself in the service of others,’ goes the quote commonly, and probably mistakenly, attributed to Gandhi. Service is a wonderful way to lose yourself, but it’s just one way. I lost myself in the wonders of nature. Others have lost themselves in art, in religion, in a near-death experience, or even in pursuit of a perfect meal. So, whether Gandhi said it or not, I’m proposing an edit to that quote, for any travellers intent on a voyage of selfdiscovery: the best way to find yourself is to stop trying and to simply lose yourself in the world. A timeless destination with historic features Bern is the perfect place to visit whether you have ‘All the time in the World’ - as Louis Armstrong sang in the theme tune to the 1969 James Bond classic On Her Majesty’s Secret Service, filmed near the Swiss capital – or if you are looking for a short break, says Tracy Jones
I
TS unique cityscape – designated by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site – includes exceptional medieval buildings such as the Cathedral (Münster) and 6km of arcades (Lauben) – the longest covered shopping promenade in Europe. It is also the home of the legendary Swiss chocolate Toblerone and Emmental cheese. It is also popular with skiers and other winter sports enthusiasts, being the closest (just 30 minutes by direct train) to the Jungfrau Region with Gstaad and the iconic Eiger and Mönch mountains And now this captivating capital city is simply easier to reach, thanks to the service from London Southend Airport (the UK’s best airport according to Which? Magazine) with SkyWork Airlines. Join 30 fellow passengers and enjoy a spacious leather seat and complimentary refreshments whilst perusing the ipad you’ve been
provided with, before touching down in Switzerland just 1 hour and 40 minutes later. The city centre is just a short journey, and Bern is easily compact enough to navigate on foot. If you’re interested in history, then head for the Clock Tower (or Zytglogge - meaning ‘time bell’). Built in the early 13th century, it has served the city as guard tower and women’s prison aswell as a unique
Einstein’s House
time piece. Book the guided tour and see the clockwork mechanisms in action – make sure you climb the 54 metres to top, throw open the shutters and enjoy the spectacular views. It was whilst living near the Zytglogge (from 1901) that Albert Einstein revolutionised our understanding of the nature of time with his ‘Theory of Relativity.’ You can imagine him walking past the clock tower each day on his way to his job at the Patent Office, looking upwards and being inspired before walking home to his cramped flat to write his groundbreaking theory. You can follow in his footsteps down the hill to visit that flat which is now the Einsteinhaus Museum. Keep walking onwards and take the bridge over the River Aare where you will spot the brown bears that lumber and slumber in Bear Park. From there the Paul Klee museum, which houses the most comprehensive collection of works by the artist and is celebrating its 10th anniversary this year, is just a short stroll. The shops in Bern are plentiful and superb – especially if you are looking for a watch or are a
chocolate lover. Bern is also jam-packed with bars and fantastic restaurants. Try the crispy and succulent Swiss potato Rösti and also the delicious melted cheese fondue, shared with friends and accompanied with a shot of Kirsch – but don’t forget tradition dictates that if a man loses his bread in the pot, he buys drinks all around, and if a woman does, she must kiss her neighbours! Set in the heart of Switzerland, Bern is the gateway to the Alps with a wide variety of winter sports and beautiful countryside less than an hour away. For lovers of films and great British heroes – this is also the place to head. The Schilthorn mountain is the perfect destination for James Bond fans, as the Piz Gloria revolving restaurant on its summit was built by the producers of On Her Majesty’s Secret Service to be the lair of arch villain Ernst Stavro Blofeld (Telly Savalas). Take the cablecar 2970m up into the clouds to enjoy the breathtaking views and a Vodka Martini – shaken not stirred, of course. There’s also an interactive exhibition, Bond World 007, where you can enjoy simulated helicopter and bobsleigh rides, morph your face into movie scenes (and take the picture home – or use
as your new Facebook profile shot) and toss a fedora 007 style onto a hat stand. Travelling further into the mountains you come to Meiringen. This is where Sherlock Holmes stayed before heading to the nearby Reichenbach Falls, the spectacular waterfall where he tussled with nemesis Moriarty before falling to his death (or did he!?) Take the train or bus to admire the falls – that also inspired landscape painter JMW Turner before heading back into Meiringen and visiting the Sherlock Holmes Museum, with its reconstruction of 221B Baker Street.

Wellbeing Getting the body LIFESTYLE
you want Part II
LANCE GERINGER is the wellbeing writer for Women & Golf magazine, he has developed products such as the Fit & Trim bar to curb hunger and cravings for those on diets and healthy eating plans, as well as the UK & Europe’s No. 1 golf nutrition bar. His new eBook, ‘The Problems of Dieting – The Solutions for Success!’ can be downloaded for free at www.fitandtrimbar.co.uk.
Our fantastic new health and fitness series by wellbeing writer Lance Geringer, B.A. will hopefully encourage and inspire you to shape up and get the body you want. Part II, focuses on Dieting the Right Way!
I
N last week’s article, I covered ‘How to start your diet/exercise programme’, and I hope you’ve begun looking at the area(s) which have caused you to gain weight. This week I will discuss the next phase in your getting in shape programme – ‘Dieting the Right Way’. As I’ve said, dieting will either help you lose the weight and get the results you’re after, or make your life miserable and stop you from reaching your goals.
Can you make it past five weeks?
Research has shown that the average diet lasts approximately 5 weeks! I’ve been in this business for over three decades and don’t need any research to tell me this, as over the years I’ve seen so many people quit their diets after only a few weeks into them. The reasons range from being hungry and stressed to choosing a diet that asked them to do things that they couldn’t fit into their lifestyle. Whatever the
reason for their failure, people become frustrated and upset and blame themselves. The failure is not coming from you, but from the misinformation that is being sold by the diet industry.
Time to see your doctor
Without health, it doesn’t matter how good you look on the outside! Make an appointment with your doctor for a routine physical examination which includes blood work, allowing you to see what is happening inside your body (i.e., making sure all your organs are functioning efficiently). Losing weight to look good only makes sense if you live a long, happy
lies, as commercials for exercise programmes show physique models who normally have low body fat levels (under 12%...you wouldn’t buy the programme if they showed normal looking people!). The internet is just as bad, as I’ve seen recommendations of 17% for men and 20% for women which is just too low for good health. Remember, anyone can write a number down and call it healthy, but if you’re new to working out and healthy eating, the numbers to aim for are 20-22% for men and 26% for women.
and healthy life.
How your body reacts to dieting
Dieting means calorie restriction, and removing calories will cause your mind and body to react to this change. You’ve been feeding your body a certain way, and as you start removing calories you will notice changes in how you feel and behave. Hunger and craving levels will increase, energy levels will decrease, and you’ll notice that you may have more mood swings. Everyone goes through this; you’re not alone and no one is immune to it!
The ‘diet’ programme
There are four phases to my dieting programme. The first phase, and the one we’ll deal with in this article, is losing the weight needed to get you to a healthy body fat level. You might be saying, “I want to lose more weight that that!”, but most people don’t realise what a healthy body fat percentage is or looks like, and that’s where the problem
Phase 1 foods
During the first phase, I want you to try to eat a minimum of three basic, healthy meals each day following the UK’s government eatwell plate. Each meal should have a small portion of high quality protein coming from chicken, fish, eggs or lean quality meat. The majority of your plate should come from vegetables, certain fruits, grains, rice and potatoes. The smallest part of your plate should come from fats. The reason why I’ve chosen this diet as the one you should start with is because it contains all the nutrients your body needs for
health, it’s not too hard to follow, and when combined with a proper exercise programme gives excellent weight loss results. But, this is not the diet I use for my clients who are physique models, since they will eat for function; the majority of people in the UK will not. Remember, you’ve only just begun phase 1 of the programme, there is no reason to jump to phase 3 as it will be too difficult to handle, and more than likely, it might not be appropriate for your body goals. As of 2015, there are no shortcuts to fast, permanent weight loss, and I will debate anyone who says their diet offers quick, permanent weight loss in a short period of time. Here is one last thing to consider: If there was actually a diet/ exercise programme which promised fast, permanent weight loss, everyone would be using it and succeeding – and thus the diet industry would cease to exist!!! Remember my words: If it sounds too good to be true, it is! But, by following what I have set out in this article, you will be on the right path to permanent weight loss and getting the body you want. The only question is: How much do you want it?
In Part III, ‘Beginning your exercise plan’, I will show you that ‘NO PAIN, NO GAIN!’ is a fallacy and that the fastest results come from enjoying your workouts.

Results with Lucy Yoga Expert
Vicky Holmestock talks to Made in Essex about the different kinds of yoga and their individual benefits?
V
ICKY has been working in the fitness industry for over 16 years having established herself as a renowned yoga expert training in Ashram, where she lived and learnt with monks. Vicky is the driving force behind the UK’s most popular online fitness programme Results with Lucy with former TOWIE-favourite Lucy Mecklenburgh and together with their team of experts they have helped over 200,000 women to get fit, gain confidence and enjoy a happier life. Yoga is a science that has been practiced for thousands of years. It is said to be the only form of exercise that when practiced leaves you with more energy than when you started. Its aim is to unite the mind, the body, and the spirit and help you become more aware of your body’s posture, alignment and patterns of movement. It makes the body more flexible and helps you relax even in the midst of a stress stricken environment. This is one of the foremost reasons why people want to start practicing Yoga - to feel fitter, be more energetic, be happier and peaceful. There are several different forms of yoga but all ultimately have the same aim which is to lead the practitioner to enlightenment. To find out more about Results with Lucy, visit www.resultswithlucy.com
Hatha – this is a gentle form of yoga where participants rest between poses. It can be very relaxing but will still work the muscles hard and develop strength. All other forms of physical yoga are developed from the hatha yoga postures. Ashtanga Yoga is a stronger practice that uses a set sequence of poses. You jump from one pose to the next making it quite physical. Classes are generally 1.5 to 2 hours. Vinyasa and Dynamic Yoga have been developed as a combination of the two. You flow from posture to posture, the main difference to Ashtanga is there being no set sequence. Bikram and Hot Yoga are practiced in a room heated to 105 degrees. Essentially hatha yoga poses are practiced in the heat, Bikram uses a set sequence of postures. It is said the heat helps the body to detoxify and improves flexibility and potentially increases weight-loss. Although the latter has not been proven. What advice would you give to new beginners looking to incorporate yoga into their lifestyle? It will help you to develop flexibility, strength and power and the more dynamic forms also offer a cardio vascular workout. Alongside the physical benefits you will learn to relax and feel energised and balanced. Legacy I highly recommend a twice weekly
practice to really feel the benefits. With online programmes like Results with Lucy it is now possible to enjoy 15 minute practices that are easier to fit into your schedule although classes can be an hour long with great benefits. You have the added benefit of being able to work with world class teachers whose sessions you might not normally be able to get to. What equipment is needed for new beginners? The lovely thing about yoga is you don’t need any equipment and very limited space. You can do it anywhere in the world and keep up your practice whilst on holiday, travelling with work or at home. Ideally you would use yoga mat which has the benefit of being non slip but in the absence of a mat a towel is great too. Yoga mats can be purchased from as little as £5. How is yoga different to Pilates? Yoga is quite different to Pilates as it is a spiritual based practice that works on both the mind and body. There is a strong focus on the breath in yoga which aids the focusing of the mind and energises the body. The breathing in Pilates is also important but tends to be the opposite
to yoga in terms of the inhalations and exhalations and movement of the abdominal wall. In a physical sense yoga poses tend to be held for 30-90 seconds whilst Pilates utilises short repetitive motions. This difference means the muscles are worked very differently. How long should you do yoga for at any one time for it to be of benefit? Any practice is better than none. If you are short on time 15 minutes twice per week will still be great. If you have more time a complete session of an hour will work the whole of the mind and body and give time for a relaxation at the end. The relaxing is as important as the postures. Twice per week is the minimum I would recommend to really see noticeable results. What are the different types of yoga taught on RWL? Results with Lucy has a really varied yoga offering, there are relaxations, breathing exercises, dynamic flow sequences, 3D Yoga (a form that incorporates functional movements and is great for injury rehab and prevention) The Grove and traditional hatha yoga.

become a fully-fledged owner-occupier With 16 years of lettings industry experience, and five years working for Belvoir, 30-year old Keeley Taylor was the perfect candidate to take over as franchisee of the Belvoir Lettings Franchise in Basildon. She is now director of Belvoir Basildon which covers the territories of Basildon, Romford and Southend-on-Sea. Her loyalty to the Belvoir brand and love for all things lettings meant that she elected to take over the business when the franchise became available. “It really felt like the right step for me when I was offered the chance to become the Franchisee,” she explains, “having worked at the office in Basildon since 2006 (primarily when it was known as ‘Let it Be and then as part of Belvoir when it was bought out by them in 2010). The company initially started nine years ago and it was just the director and me at that time. We had no properties and strived to create and grow a client-base. Since then the business has grown tremendously.” Keeley’s contacts have held her in good stead. “I’ve worked at the office for so long so I have some great relationships with the existing

Beyond the sea
F
igures released recently by the Office of National Statistics showed that Southend is one of East Anglia’s leading property hotspots, based on price rises between 1995 and 2014. The average value of a home went up an amazing 334% during that time, putting it behind only Cambridge and St Albans in the region. In recent years, the town has started to emerge from the doldrums, part of a nationwide trend that has seen some longneglected seaside towns start to benefit from regeneration and investment. As prices in London have risen beyond the means of many Londoners and commuters, so areas within a reasonable time of the capital have become more attractive. Southend’s two commuter rail routes, together with a brace of arterial roads heading westwards to the M25 and beyond, have naturally brought in people squeezed out of living nearer London. In contrast to Basildon, Southend doesn’t currently have major sites of redevelopment, so new homes tend to pop up on smaller sites around the town, often disused “brownfield” sites whose new use will usually bring up property values in the surrounding area. There are plans afoot for some major works to take place and regenerate some larger sites, however. Construction firm Randall Watts has bought two former offices in Victoria Avenue, Heath House and Carby House,
Developers are looking beyond the promenade as they bring new homes to Southend-on-Sea
Holy Trinity Church, Takeley (courtesy of Wikimedia Commons) and plans to convert them into a mixed-use scheme with commercial units and around 280flats, complete with a rooftop garden, concierge service, and gym, within the next couple of years. Mark Watts, managing director of Randall Watts, is looking forward to the challenge of transforming these “eyesore” buidings: “We are going to put on an external skin, which is like the sort of thing you see in London. The...site, which will now be known as Beaumont Court and Richmond House, is an extremely exciting scheme for us, upon which we have been working closely with the council to ensure the development adds
to what will be a cosmopolitan and vibrant new neighbourhood in Southend.” Down on the seafront, adjacent to the famous, listed Kursaal building, another mixed-use development, called Marine Plaza, was recently given the green light by Southend council and will transform what is currently a car park into new restaurants, cafés and 282 brand new homes, of which 35% are to be affordable. Formed mostly of apartments, this scheme will give most residents extensive views of the Thames Estuary along the river and over to Kent. The reinvention of the county’s most famous resort continues.

A huge difference to an ordinary new-build is that all our retirement developments benefit from a lodge manager, who is there to provide support for owners and run the building on their behalf, acting as a good neighbour. What sort of people do your developments attract? When downsizing into one of our properties, people often want to stay in the area they’ve lived for many years. However, we also see people moving areas, perhaps to be closer to their families or to be near the sea in their retirement years. Location is really crucial in our business to ensure we’re providing customers with everything they need, right on their doorstep. We won’t build developments more than a reasonable level walk from a town centre with a good range of facilities and services. It's often a long process for someone to leave a cherished family home later in life - what do you find are the main concerns of older buyers? Leaving a family home is never an easy decision but for many of our buyers, removing the hassle and stress involved with maintaining a larger, older property is a huge relief. I often hear owners say they wished they’d made the move years ago and how moving to a Churchill development has given them a whole new lease of life. The idea of selling a home and going through the buying process again is the main concern for many older buyers, but we offer a number of packages to help make it a stressfree move and our highly trained consultants are on hand to guide them through every step of the process. Are there ways in which you can help buyers sell an existing home and make the move smoothly? Our ‘Selling Made Easy’ service takes away the stresses and strains associated with selling a property. We deal with estate agents on the purchasers’ behalf to help ensure that the property is being well marketed and viewings are being arranged to secure a sale as quickly as possible, at a good market price. We also offer significant sums toward estate agents’ fees and panel solicitors’ fees. In addition we can help pay for standard home removals, including packing and unwrapping.

Whathouse.com speaks exclusively to Greg Hilton, regional managing director (Eastern) of Churchill Retirement Living, to talk about the benefits of a brand new home on a purposebuilt development for older buyers Alternatively, our Home Exchange service provides a simple and effective alternative to selling on the open market. It means homeowners can move into their new property far faster, and takes away the hassle of selling an existing property. What do you think the appeal of Essex is, as a place to live, and particularly the locations you're currently selling in? Essex has always been a popular place to seek that more relaxing way of life. It offers a rich tapestry of everything that makes Britain great – which makes it an excellent place to live. The county has an abundance of picturesque towns and villages such as Saffron Walden and Waltham Abbey, all with their own individual history and character. The coast is terrific, with something for everyone and there are a whole host of places to visit and things to do, from spectacular old houses and gardens such as Audley End, to country parks and nature reserves. The larger towns such as Chelmsford also offer fantastic amenities with great shopping and leisure facilities on your doorstep. Quality of life is especially important later in life - what does a Churchill development offer in this respect? A great deal of thought, research and planning goes into selecting the location of every development. We ensure our retirement properties are built in central locations within easy access of public transport links, shops, local facilities and essential services, all reducing the need to travel by car. Alongside this, other benefits include companionship and a community which reduces isolation, loneliness and depression. Our apartments help to maintain an independent lifestyle and heath and general wellbeing. The safety and security features we have as standard also reduce anxieties and worries experienced by many elderly people. What are your current schemes in Essex and what others are in the pipeline? We currently have three selling developments, King Henry Lodge in Chingford, Saffron Lodge in Saffron Walden and King Harold Lodge in Waltham Abbey. King Henry Lodge in Chingford has just one apartment remaining and Saffron
Lodge launched last year and is already over 70% sold, with a wonderful, lively community now well established there. We’ve just welcomed our first owners at King Harold Lodge, which is a new development of 28 apartments in the lovely market town of Waltham Abbey. Construction work has also just started on a new development of 55 one- and two-bedroom apartments on New London Road in Chelmsford. We’re hoping to release the first homes for sale here in April 2016. We have exciting plans to increase our presence in Essex, with contracts recently exchanged on a development site 200 yards from Hornchurch High Street and further land purchases to come on the Essex coast. We have a big growth phase planned in the Eastern region, so watch this space as Churchill will be increasingly active in the years to come.

he Financial Ombudsman (FOS) has launched a stinging attack on lenders, accusing them of a 'box ticking' approach which 'rarely leads to a fair outcome for customers wanting to port their existing mortgage deals. In its latest news update, the FOS has criticised lenders for making decisions based on inflexible processes rather than looking at what is in the best interests of customers. It argues that the new Mortgage Market Review rules, implemented in April 2014, do not mean that lenders should not take a borrower’s individual circumstances into account when making their decision. The FOS reported that in terms of mortgages, there were 3,338 new complaints from April to June 2015, compared to 3,467 for the previous three months with 32% of these upheld. “Over the last few years we’ve continued to receive high numbers of complaints about mortgages,” reads the document, adding that “a disappointing proportion” of these involved administrative or communication errors which could have been sorted out without their involvement. Since April 2014, tighter mortgage rules have led to more complaints that lenders are applying the rules too rigidly – in some cases leading to outcomes that are unfair on customers. “In particular, many of the complaints we’ve seen about ‘porting’ – transferring

a mortgage to another property – stem from the way lenders are applying the new rules,” says the FOS update. “For example, we hear from people who’d previously been
told they could port their mortgage – but who have since been told that new lending requirements mean they can’t.” Shortly after the new rules came into force
in the spring of 2014, FT Adviser reported that many home movers were being forced to pay thousands of pounds in early repayment charges because of their current lender 'over-interpreting' the regulations and refusing to let them 'port' their mortgage. However, changes to the original drafting of the rules in 2012 meant that lenders were not required to test affordability for existing borrowers who wanted to port their mortgage without increasing the size of their outstanding loan. As well as complaints about the way lenders interpret the new rules, the FOS has also said that many of the complaints they receive may be rooted in something more serious. “For example, complaints about the suitability of interest-only mortgages tend to arise towards the end of a mortgage term; when someone recognises they don’t have a way of repaying the capital.” Mortgages remain the third most complained about financial product, behind Payment Protection Insurance (PPI) and current accounts.

There’s the Classic Collection in a selection of colours (camel, white, black and navy) bearing the brands signature Zen paint swirllike logo, the Gold Edition limited edition available in two colour-ways White and Gold or Black and Gold (just 50 of each have been produced to give that unique limited edition offering) and the Signature Collection which comes in three ‘cut and sew’ designs (an unusual side-panel feature in a trio of patterns). Choose from giraffe (black), sahara paisley (white) and illusion (black). The entire collection is made from beautifully soft 100% cotton and starts from £25. The boys are staunch supporters of Fairtrade (which guarantees a better deal for Third World producers) and for each T-shirt sold Zen Apparel UK will give £1 to a charity who is a supporter of Fairtrade. Sam and Stefan have an eco-friendly stance too and their Gold Edition tee is made using eco-reusable materials. Sam and Stefan first had the idea to start their own fashion brand two years ago. At the time, Sam was studying art at college and Stefan was a cafe manager. “The idea for Zen came from one of my college classes,” Sam explains. “I spotted the paint swirl image which would become our logo, in a tutorial. I discovered from my brother that it was a Zen circle. We started researching into Zen and the meaning behind it. We felt it was perfect for us and our clothing brand. We both have religious backgrounds and can understand the power of prayer/meditation. I

found one Zen quotation which said: “It is the power of the mind to be unconquerable: this fits in well with our future plans. We would love the brand to become hugely successful and don’t see this as being unachievable!” Sam and Stefan applied for a £10,000 loan from a government funded scheme, Foundation East which offers Start Up loans to businesses that are either a start-up or have been trading for less than 24 months and based in the UK. “Getting the loan wasn’t just a walk in the park,” adds Sam, “it took time, we had to write out a business plan, cashflow forecasts, profit and loss forecasts, etc.. This was all new to us as well so we had to learn it and collate it from scratch. Thankfully the loan was approved in February this year and since then we have been working towards our final products.” This exciting new brand is most definitely one to watch. So, calling all gents with an eye for fashion, Zen Apparel is a name to remember!

More than just the X Factor H E enjoyed a standing ovation at the press night of Memphis the Musical where he is starring in the lead role. As well as Mel C and Nicole Scherzinger cheering him on, Made in Essex’s KARIN RIDGERS was standing up and cheering too.
and clean. But it’s so your vocal chords don’t get tired. It’s all to do with efficiency of air. I have had a lot of vocal training but I will not continue singing like this forever, it’s just how I have to sing in theatre and so as not to do any long-term damage.
With super choreography, brilliant songs and Queen of British Soul Beverley Knight starring as ‘Felicia Farrell’ the role she originated in the West End, the show now starring Matt the former X Factor winner who is loved by the ladies as well as being one of the lads, is even more appealing to go and see. Memphis the Musical gives us a taste of the segregation of black and white people just 60 short years ago. There’s some moments of shock however a stunning script provides lots of humour as well. The loveable, fictional, DJ ‘Huey Calhoun’ , is brought to life by Cardle and the show includes cast of characters that you get to know and actually do care about. Written by Grammy® Awardwinning David Bryan, a founding member of Bon Jovi, and Joe DiPietro, the show is inspired by true events from the underground dance clubs of 1950s Memphis, Tennessee, and follows the fame and forbidden love of a radio DJ who wants to change the world and a club singer who is ready for her big break. We found out a little more from Matt about his very first acting role, working alongside Beverley Knight and what he found more scary – the X Factor finals or the opening night of Memphis the Musical
What synergies do you feel with you and Huey? We both share a total lack of thinking! Then there’s the sense of genuine stupidity at times. The fact we both love wearing hats is a huge bonus.
Hi Matt, we loved seeing you Memphis recently, so how did being in the hit West End show come about? I was in the studio recording what will be my fourth album when my manager called and said that Beverley had invited me to come down and watch the show. I’ve always been a huge fan of hers. Her voice is so incredible and I can’t wait to hear her new album. However I’d never thought about acting before. I saw the show and was totally blown away by it. Shortly after I was asked to come and audition for the role of Huey Calhoun. A couple of
His name may be synonymous with winning the X-Factor in 2010 but since then Matt Cardle’s career has hit new highs. weeks later I was offered the role and handed a 200-page script. It suddenly became very real and serious! It is your first acting role too – talk about being thrown in at the deep end! How have you prepared and when did you start working on
the role of Huey Calhoun? I first saw the show in April and my first audition was the following week. I had commitments in the recording studio and quite a few gigs in the diary during May and June but we managed to squeeze in three weeks of rehearsals. After a couple of dress runs I was on stage with my first audience at the beginning of July. When I originally sang for the producers, the musical supervisor said ‘You need to clean up your voice a bit’. He didn’t think I could make it through a show singing the way I always had done for my own live shows. It wasn’t that I couldn’t sing the songs, but my own technique is not an every night technique. I had to take all of myself out of the role – all of my characteristics. My own style of singing was not conducive to singing seven shows a week. It’s why people get offended if you say ‘You sound very musical theatre’. It basically means straight, no thrills
What can people expect when they come to see the show? What I love about the story of Memphis is that while being consistently entertaining it also deals with the terrible plight of those living with and tackling segregation in South America at its height during the 50’s. Sadly this is still on-going. There are some incredible moments where the message of the show comes
and stabs you in the gut and others that will have you howling with laughter. Beverley will leave you with goose-bumps as she sings her way through the show too. It is an incredibly emotive subject however the show is very funny too, what did you think when you first read the script? I thought it was genius how they wound a sensitive topic around incredible music and hilarious comedy to keep it entertaining while delivering a heavy message. I’ve lost count of the number of people at stage door every night who tell me they’re coming to see the show again. So which do you prefer music or acting?
I can’t choose and I don’t want to if I’m honest. So many people want to pigeonhole you into doing one thing these days but I’m enjoying doing both right now. I’m used to being on stage playing guitar, singing and filming music videos. I guess in a way theatre is an extension of that as well as being a brand new challenge for me. I know how lucky I am to have landed this role. I truly believe I’ve been given the golden egg with Memphis. It’s one of the best shows in town and Beverley Knight is in it, so say no more. It’s the best company, the best crew and one of the best leading male roles around. Plus during the day I’m able to continue recording my album. What more could I ask for? What was more nerve racking – X Factor finals or the first night of Memphis? The X Factor without a second thought. I was pretty sick by the final show and knowing I might mess up in front of 19 million people while on stage with Rihanna was rather daunting. I was nervous on my opening night of Memphis but as soon as I step out on stage it takes everyone, including myself, on a magical journey. What’s in the pipeline for you Matt? More theatre? Films? Memphis is a huge part of my life until the end of October and it’s soooooo much fun. I’ll finish off my new album over the next couple of months and next year I’ll do my own UK tour. All I know is I’m enjoying every second of life right now. Anything you would like to say to your Essex fans?! As a fellow Essex boy (Matt is from Halstead) I’d like to say a massive thank you to everyone for their support over the last 5 years. Come and see Memphis at the Shaftesbury Theatre before the end of October, I promise that you won’t be disappointed.

Sweet Eve Strawberry & Asparagus Quiche & Mini Quiches
“This recipe is quick and easy - using bought puff pastry it’s a twist on a classic quiche. Crème fraiche, eggs and pink peppercorns work together beautifully and the final result looks & tastes divine. Ingredients: 1 tbsp flour for dusting 250g ready roll puff pastry 1 whisked whole large egg, for glazing 75g asparagus tips 150g Sweet Eve strawberries, washed and halved 4 tbsp crème fraiche 2 large eggs, plus 1 extra yolk 10 crushed pink peppercorns 50g Parmigiano cheese, grated salt & pepper
F
AMILY food writer and TV chef Alex Hollywood has created some seasonal recipes using Sweet Eve strawberries and the freshest seasonal produce around. The Sweet Eve strawberry variety was bred and developed in our neighbouring county of Kent by master breeder Peter Vinson, whose family have been growing strawberries in Kent for over 150 years. “People don’t cook or bake enough with strawberries,” says Alex. “Sweet Eve strawberries are sweet, bursting with flavour and are available longer than other varieties (May to October). They are perfect to toss into an avocado and Stilton salad or dip into bitter chocolate, the extra sweet flavour means they are really versatile and you can have fun and experiment. I adore strawberries and try to use them as much as possible in my cooking when they are in season.”
Method: Preheat your oven to 200C and line a baking tray with baking paper. On a floured surface, roll out the puff pastry to fit the baking tray and use a knife to score a 2cm border around the edge but without cutting through the
Sweet Eve Strawberry & Blackberry Clafoutis “This is named after my French godmother – Monique – who makes a perfect baked Clafoutis. I love the way you can see the whole berries nestling in the buttery cake mixture. Served with crème fraiche, this is divine.” Serves: 6 Preparation time: 15 minutes Cooking time: 35 minutes
Ingredients: A little butter for greasing 150g Sweet Eve strawberries, halved 150g blackberries 1 tbsp brandy 60g plain flour 1 /2 level tsp baking powder 100g caster sugar pinch salt 3 large free range eggs 1 /2 tsp vanilla extract
250ml single cream icing sugar for dusting Method: Preheat the oven to 180C and grease a baking dish. In a bowl mix the strawberries and blackberries with the brandy and allow to sit. Sift the flour into a bowl and stir in the baking powder, sugar and salt. In a separate, dish whisk the eggs, vanilla and cream together then
slowly add the mix to the flour, stirring until you have a smooth batter. Place the brandied fruit into the greased dish arranging it so that the rounded sides of the strawberries face upwards and pour the batter over the top. Bake for 35 minutes until puffed up and golden brown. Remove from the oven, dust with the icing sugar and serve.
pastry completely. Prick the pastry all over inside the border, brush with whisked egg mixture and bake for 12-15 minutes then remove and push down the base inside the border and set aside to cool. In a bowl, mix the crème fraiche, eggs and yolk and the parmesan together, lightly season, then empty the filling onto the chilled pastry, ensuring that none goes over the border. Arrange the asparagus tips and the strawberries over the mixture and using a pastry brush, cover the border with the whisked egg mix and gently brush the asparagus and strawberries too. Sprinkle with the crushed peppercorns. Bake for about 20 -25 minutes until the pastry is golden brown and the filling is cooked.

Sweet Eve Strawberry & Orange Fool “Blitzed strawberries, cream, Greek yoghurt, and orange juice go together to make a lighted option summer dessert. Decorate the fool with whole sugared Sweet Eve strawberries to create one of my favourite sweet dishes!” Serves: 6 Preparation time: 1 hour

Just before serving, take the reserved strawberries, cut in half and roll the pointed end in the caster sugar before arranging the two halves on the top of the fool.
Sweet Eve Strawberry & Blueberry Hot Pots
“I often use the old jars I have hanging around to make these puddings. They’re easily transportable with their lids and they look great. T’S also the perfect time to start stock piling the fruits of your labour so think about how you can use the flowers and herbs that are growing in abundance at the moment, and how fruit and veg can be stored for the coming months. For a steady supply of fresh herbs through the winter cut the younger leaves, rinse in clean water and, after putting them in a plastic bag, place in the freezer. There is no need to chop them up, simply crush them gently when frozen and use as required. On a slightly larger scale, now is the perfect time to think about ordering fruit trees for delivery and planting over the next couple of months. Gardening myth of the month is that you need both a male and

ROWING your own organic vegetables is relatively easy, particularly as many organic techniques are simply good gardening practices. Organic allotment gardeners don’t use synthetic fertilisers or pesticides on their plants and view their allotment as part of a whole eco-system that starts with the soil and includes water supply, people, wildlife and insects. Organic allotment gardening strives to work in harmony with nature so here are some top tips on how you can achieve just that.

Covering with black polythene or old carpet for several months will do this for you. Loosen the soil by digging and feed it with organic matter such compost and leaf mulch. Good healthy soil helps to create strong, productive plants.

days for your Garden female tree in order to get fruit. Although, it’s true that some fruit trees need both the male and female to be planted close to each other in order to product fruit, there are now a lot of self-pollinating trees that have been developed. They provide their own pollen and fertilise themselves – so
keep an eye out for self-pollinating peach, apple, apricot, pear and cherry trees. August is holiday season so make sure before you go away you have made provision for the watering of containers and baskets. One of the easiest ways is to simply fill a large plastic bottle with water, put the screw lid on and then make small holes in the lid so that water can drip out. Place the bottle of water in the pot or basket and it will slowly drip water into the soil. A plant that always needs a good watering is the easy going and easy growing hydrangea. There are two types of flowering hydrangeas - mophead with large round flowerheads resembling pom-poms and lacecap that have round, flat flowerheads. Over the winter, hydrangeas will lose their
leaves but being fully hardy will re-leaf the following year although flower colour can change depending on the soil condition. A fan of hydrangeas is musician, singer and keen gardener Katie Melua. She says: “Even as a singular flower head, a hydrangea is majestic to me. Flowering from summer all the way through to autumn, the variety and richness of colours from white to the deepest purples are a glorious quality.”
If you are holidaying at home then it will give you some time to start planning your spring bulb display so get out those bulb catalogues, have a look and start deciding which bulbs you would like to order.

Less is more
It’s a good idea to start with a small but varied selection of plants, and learn what works for you. The Organic Gardening Catalogue website (www. organiccatalogue.co.uk) has an Easy to Grow section which recommends a range of veg and herbs suitable for beginners. If you start small you can expand each season and experiment with different types of vegetables.
Choose organic seeds, plants and garden supplies
If to start with you can’t make enough home-made compost you can obtain a wide range of organic feeds, growing media and soil
conditioners by mail order and online. To give your crops a good start in life, choose organically grown seeds and plants – the
more you support people growing and earning their living producing these for sale, the more there will be available in the future.
Protect plants the organic way
There are many ways you can protect your plants from pests without using chemicals. Prevention is the first rule of organic allotment gardening, so use traps, repellents and barriers to stop the bad bugs getting onto your plants. Use nets and mesh covers to keep butterflies and aphids at bay, and discourage birds from damaging your crops with a bird scarer. At the same time, encourage natural pest predators onto your allotment such as frogs and ladybirds. For slugs and snails try using barriers such as copper rings or strips or SlugGone wool pellets, or a natural repellent spray. Much safer and better for the environment all round. MOTORING
Jetta offers traditional saloon motoring V OLKSWAGEN’S Jetta is a car that appears to have slipped under the radar of UK buyers as this traditional saloon cars seems to be have been overshadowed by hatchback-mad British drivers. Sales in Europe are successful, but here it does not seem to have found favour in the same way. Which is a shame, as the Jetta is a thoroughly good car. Think of it as a Golf with a boot, it shares a lot in common with its hatchback counterpart, using engines, gearboxes and interior equipment from the German manufacturer comprehensive parts bin. On test was the 2.0-litre TDI Bluemotion diesel SE, which has an on the road price tag of £23,850. With 150PS of power, plus 340Nm of torque, it is mated to a sixspeed DSG automatic gearbox, performance is reasonably brisk indicated by a 0-60 time of 8.9 seconds and a top speed of 135mph. Understated in its exterior design, the straight lines and upright shape of the Jetta means it is a practical car, rather than an outright looker,

but these upright lines do offer bags of interior space and in particular a huge boot of 510 litres (130 more than the Golf). Flat and wide, its 60:40 split rear seats also provide for a through load facility for extra convenience and carrying capacity. Getting behind the wheel for the first time you are confronted with familiar dials and dash layout from the Golf, all very well presented and functional and with a quality look and feel you would expect from Volkswagen. With enough adjustments on the cloth covered seats for height and position, plus a rake and reach steering column, it is easy to find a comfortable set up very quickly.

Out on the road the Jetta has a comfortable ride with the seats providing enough lumbar support, although getting in, the seat sides have a hard edge which I found it best to avoid and found myself careful to avoid, rather than catch my leg on it. Over a mixed run on motorway and town traffic,

Revised Giulietta cheaper to run T HE Alfa Romeo Giulietta engine range has been revised to offer improved economy and emissions across the entire petrol and diesel engine range. Of key interest to both private buyers and business users, the popular 1.6 JTDM-2 turbo diesel engine not only benefits from a reduction in emissions from 104g/km to 99g/km, thanks to the addition of a variable-geometry turbo charger and low rollingresistance tyres, it also brings an increase in power from 105hp to 120hp. The drop in emissions results in a one percent BIK reduction to 17% and the
annual Road Fund Licence is now zero. The uprated engine, which complies with strict EU6 emissions regulations, boosts top speed by 6 MPH to 121 MPH, where legally permitted, and improves the 0 – 62 figure by 1.3 seconds to just 10.0 seconds. At the same time, the new Giulietta 1.6 JTDM-2 can now return 74.3 MPG on the official combined fuel economy cycle, a significant improvement over the impressive 70.6 recorded by the current 1.6 JTDM2 105hp engine. Indeed, every engine is now compliant with the latest Euro 6 regulations and (with
the exception of the recentlyintroduced 2.0 JTDM2turbo diesel 150hp) sees its emissions and economy improved, resulting in a one per cent BIK reduction on all engines from the entry-level 1.4 Turbo Petrol 120hp to the 1750TBi 240hp TCT unit that powers the high-performance Quadrifoglio Verde version. While the 1.4 MultiAir Turbo Petrol 150hp and 170hp engines slip into a lower emissions band, reducing the OTR price by £130 and annual running costs even further. Pricing for the Alfa Romeo Giulietta range remains unchanged despite the engine upgrades, with pricing for the 1.4 TB 120hp Progression
Prices for the new Alfa Romeo Giulietta start from £18,450 starting at £18,450 OTR and the 1.6 JTDM-2 120hp Progression priced from £19,500 OTR. Pricing for the Business Edition range, which feature a 6.5-inch touchscreen
Uconnect infotainment system with voice activated satellite navigation, 3D mapping and DAB digital radio; front and rear parking sensors; automatic lights and wipers; alloy wheels and metallic
paint all as standard, start from just £19,080 OTR for the 1.6 JTDM-2 120hp turbo diesel. For more information on the current Alfa Romeo range, please visit www.alfaromeo. co.uk

Young Sullivan makes great debut for the second team
O
N A NIGHTMARE week for selection, the teams acquitted themselves well with five wins in eight games. On Saturday it was a case of the filling being good but the bread being off as the firsts and sixths lost. On Sunday, for the second successive year, the President’s XI turned in a limp batting display, this time losing to MCC. There was a gut-wrenching defeat for the first team, in five games time they will find out how much five runs matters. After dismissing Ilford for 152 and reaching 72 without loss, an inexperienced side lacking its two elder statesmen collapsed against some good spin bowling. Stand-in skipper Lee Cranmer made a fine unbeaten 96 for the seconds but it was 14-year-old Sean Sullivan who caught the eye with an impressive 58 on debut. Those two ensured that Shenfield’s 231 for nine was surpassed with some comfort. Chelmer Park had a second nail-biting finish but this time Chelmsford prevailed, beating Shenfield by a single wicket. Simmons (108*) and Borman (49) had scored well as Shenfield posted 229 for eight, Ian Hare deserving more than three wickets in a fine spell.

(Ilford won by 4 runs) Shepherd Neame Essex League Premier Division Played at Chelmer Park
CHELMSFORD’S impressive fivematch winning streak came to a halt on Saturday, as a nail-biting finish ended in a narrow four-run loss for the home side to Ilford. After Ilford won the toss and elected to bat, Chelmsford were rewarded with an early breakthrough for Ben Clifford, before Sam Cook struck twice to put Ilford in a spot of bother at 32 for three. After the introduction of Aaron Beard (3-20) into the attack brought a fourth wicket, it became clear that Ilford were facing an uphill struggle if they were going to build a defendable total. The return of Cook (3-18) brought the breakthrough wicket of Jacobs, although Ayub provided support for Imtiaz, who was beginning to score quickly. At 146 for five a score of around 200 appeared possible but after Beard removed Ayub and Karamat Ali removed Imtiaz for 66, the innings quickly subsided to 152 all out. The Chelmsford response started brightly, with Nick Bailey in particular
Although no single player got more than Paul Keaney’s 45, Chelmsford achieved that with Stephen Drain (28*) striking two excellent boundaries in the last over. The fourth team bandwagon rolled on as they won by 4 wickets at Chingford. The home side were bowled out for 116 with Neil Raisborough excelling as usual, he and Tom Arnold took three wickets each. A strong defence was made but Andy Rycroft (69) played the innings of the day as Chelmsford won by four wickets. A young fifth team including two father and sons combinations got a terrific threewicket win at Belhus. The Coles had a very good day, with Matt taking five wickets and Ed and father Andy putting together the match winning partnership. Belhus were restricted to 176 for nine and his brother Luke made a solid 37 at the start of the chase. Ben Turner (47) and Jack Campion (38) played well but fell in successive overs, leaving the stage clear for the Coles. The sixth team were younger still and totally outmatched against Westcliff. A couple of adults helped themselves to big scores and ensured their younger colleagues did not get much chance as Westcliff amassed 235 for two in looking to dominate the Ilford opening bowlers. The fifty was brought up quickly and Chelmsford appeared to be making short work of the chase. Sterland and Ollie Devenish formed an effective partnership and they began to eat away at the required runs through a combination of effective running and steady strokeplay. With just five to win, Devenish was struck on the thigh and was adjudged to be LBW to end a brave effort of 23 under intense pressure. 2ND TEAM Shenfield 231-9 Chelmsford 233-4
(Chelmsford won by 6 wickets) Shepherd Neame Essex League Premier Division Played at Shenfield
THE second team kept pace with the other two sides in the title race with 14-year-old Sean Sullivan making a huge impression on his debut. Shenfield made a good start but Rob Hayto and Mark Drain eventually removed the openers. Drain (3-41) and Hayto (3-41) eventually picked up more wickets to ensure the scoring did not get away. With a small boundary and fast outfield, 232 was an attainable target. Castell (2-16) bowled a useful spell to give Chelmsford pause for thought.
35 overs. Chelmsford played out their innings to 150 for three with Fabian Bright playing well. Sunday was President’s Day and there were impressive wins for the under11s and under-13s in the morning and the Sunday seconds in the afternoon. Unfortunately the showpiece match was not so good, at least extending beyond tea this year but not by much. Karamat Ali’s hat-trick was the highlight of the day as he closed out the MCC innings at 201. The reply started badly and although it got better, they never really threatened the target, finishing 154 all out. Wagstaff with 49 was the top scorer on the day and also picked up three wickets. There were four in total for Karamat Ali who would have picked up some useful tips from Tom Halsey (3-18) and for MCC Joe Elllis-Grewall took four. A fine partnership between Matt Davis (95) and Jay Smith (48) formed the backbone of an impressive win for the Sunday seconds. Luke Smith (2-21) was one of three under-13s to pick up wickets as Sheering scored 212 for seven from 40 overs; Greenall scoring his second successive century in this fixture. That total proved insufficient with Ed Cole scoring the winning runs for the second time.
Winners Kath Jolly, Ron Lofts,Sue Hickman and Janet Howson
Captains’ Day winners MORE than 30 members of Brentwood Bowling Club turned out in their whites for the annual Captains’ Day celebration last Sunday afternoon. Six triples teams and four fours played 18 ends in a competition based on shot difference. This year’s honours went to skip Ron Lofts and his squad of Kath Jolly, Janet Howson and Sue Hickman who finished 12 points ahead of their opponents. Men’s captain Richard Rose and ladies’ captain Margaret Rayment outlined some of the achievements so far. Rose reported on men’s team activity in the Romford and Clockhouse leagues but said the strongest performance had been in the Brentwood and District league.
In outside competitions, Geoff Byatt was wished good luck in the forthcoming semi-final of the prestigious Romford singles and the semi-final of the RBA Silver Jubilee competition. The ladies had some notable performances with Kath Jolly and Marje Shute reaching the semifinals of the County Benevolent Triples competition where they lost to the eventual winners. Brentwood ladies have two teams in the semi-finals of the Hartswood League competition which could mean an allBrentwood final. In open day competitions at other clubs, Brentwood ladies took first and third place at Brentwood-based Kings Chase and second and third places at neighbouring Hutton Poplars.
Five run defeat to Ilford ends first teams five match winning streak Sullivan made 58 from just 50 balls, showing an impressive range of shots. Cranmer would finish the game off unbeaten on 96. 3RD TEAM Shenfield 229-8 Chelmsford 231-9
(Chelmsford won by 1 wicket) Shepherd Neame Essex League Premier Division Played at Chelmer Park
FOR the second time this season the third team sneaked to victory by a single wicket. Stephen Drain found two boundaries in the last over to complete this one. It might have been much easier had Chelmsford held their chances or had more luck in the field but that would have been less thrilling. Captain James Arnold looked in super form, stroking 19 from 10 balls whilst Chris Drain was busy at the other end. They had Chelmsford in a winning position with 50 needed from 50 balls before busy turned brainless and Arnold was run out. Not content with doing it once, Drain then ran his skipper out again, this time as a
runner for the injured Steve Bond. Drain was joined by his brother Stephen and they steadied things before a leading edge ended Chris’s innings on 33. Stephen did not want to be outdone by his brother and ran out Craig Thompson with 15 needed. At the start of the final over, 11 were needed with two wickets left. A single from the first ball gave Drain the strike and he launched a huge six, then split the boundary fielders for what looked like a comfortable two. The only thing that could have stopped two was a direct hit and that happened, summing up Hare’s luck for the day. Three balls left, three to win but fortunately Drain (28*) on strike and he found the short boundary immediately to secure 20 much needed points. Incredibly, despite plenty of talent and chasing down 230, it remains the case that none of the side has made a third team half century this season.

Robins comeback stuns Hammers
T
HE Swindon Robins staged a dramatic comeback at the Arena Essex Raceway last Friday, pulling back a 12-point deficit after heat 6, to take the meeting 43-50. The Hammers began the meeting in a dominant fashion, with skipper Andreas Jonsson and guest Poitr Swiderski outgating Swindon number one Darcy Ward and then commanding the first and second bends to take a maximum heat advantage. Guest Fast Track reserve Ben Morley took the flag for the Hammers in a shared heat 2, as Adam Ellis slid off on the entry to bend three on the first lap, whilst Wilkinson and Branford took the minor placings. Jonsson took rider replacement for the injured Kim Nilson in heat three, pulling off a sweet overtake around Troy Batchelor on the entry to the home straight on the end of the first lap, whilst Kennett slotted in ahead of Zengota. Adam Ellis took his first win of the night in the following race, despite losing his steel
shoe on the second lap, with Richard Lawson team riding him home ahead of the chasing Zengota to give the Hammers a 10 point lead. Former Hammers Swiderski and Morley extended this lead further in the 5th, with Swiderski swooping around Blackbird on the third bend of the first lap. Twelve points down, Alun Rossiter deployed Darcy Ward for a tactical in heat six, with the Aussie teaming up with his compatriot Troy Batchelor to gate and take maximum points ahead of Kennett and Lawson. Ward returned as rider replacement for the injured Nick Morris in the following heat, delivering a smart first and second bend to join team mate Zengota at the front, whilst Kennett and Jonsson appeared to hinder each other, leaving Jonsson insufficient time to catch the Swindon pairing. From twelve down, the Robins were suddenly back in the meeting. Lawson gated in the eighth to take the flag over Wilkinson and Blackbird
with Ellis unable to make any impression, before Zengota took victory in a re-run of the ninth, despite the chasing efforts of Swiderski, whilst Morley kept Branford honest for another shared three all. Ward convincinly won heat 10 ahead of Kennett and Lawson for a third shared race, a score which was then replicated in the eleventh, with Jonsson dominating from the gate, whilst Swiderski was unable to find a way past Blackbird and Batchelor. Ellis took victory the second reserves race, but with Morley unable to trouble Wilkinson and Branford, the pressure began to crank up on the Hammers, knowing that the Swindon big guns of Ward and Batchelor would be in two of the remaining three races. And so it proved when the Aussie pairing nailed a maximum 5-1 in the thirteenth over Jonsson and Swiderski, to give the Robinsa three point advantage and the lead for the first time of the evening. Lawson and Kennett gated in the penultimate race, but when Kennett over cooked it
Lakeside’s Adam Ellis and Swindon’s Max Fricke in action on the second bend, Zengota and Batchelor steamed through the gap to follow Lawson to the flag for a further shared heat, leaving the Hammers a mountain to climb in the nominated heat 15 to salvage the meeting. Despite being off gates 1 and 3, the Hammers fans could only watch in dismay as Batchelor and Ward again gated to bring home a final 5-1 to the vistors ahead of Jonsson and Lawson, and with it, take the full four elite league points back to Wiltshire. n A PATCHED up Vortex Lakeside Hammers finally took their first away victory last
Saturday, with a comfortable 39-51 victory over the Leicester Lions. The Hammers were forced to call upon Hans Andersen, Max Fricke and Richard Hall to cover for injuries to Kim Nilsson, Mikkel Bech and Ashley Birks, whilst Chris Harris came in for skipper Andreas Jonsson who was competing in his national championships in Sweden, where he finished second. After an initial drawn opening heat, the Hammers led for the remainder of the meeting, depriving the Lions of any heat advantages until the final nominated heat 15.
At reserve, Ellis and guest Richard Hall dominated their Lion counterparts with 7 (paid 8) and 7 (paid 9) respectively, with Ellis re-instated in heat 12 by the referee, following an initial exclusion for leaving the track after the first running of the race had been stopped with James Sarjeant excluded. Harris chipped in with 9 points, and Andersen 7, whilst Hammers, Edward Kennett (5+2) and Richard Lawson (6+1) each took a heat win, but the star of the show for the Essex team was guest Max Fricke who delivered 10 paid 11, including three heat victories.

Funding to get motivated into sport
Scuba diving girl Janie Banks
SPORTIVATE is celebrating four years of success in getting young people in Essex involved in sport through the funding of more than 17,000 participants in 600 projects in 52 different sports and activities. Now Sportivate is looking to the future. The programme is due to continue running until at least March 2017 and each year more than £280,000 is available for investment in Essex. Next year Sportivate is hoping to attract more people, specifically in the 17-25 age bracket, into new activities, especially those young people who are not currently doing a regular activity. With the huge focus on
women in sport and the ‘This Girl Can’ campaign, Sportivate also wants to target more activities for young women. One person who has benefitted from Sportivate is 16-year-old Janie Banks, who had never participated in sport before and had become disengaged from education, regularly missing school. But since her involvement with Sportivate, her turnaround has been remarkable. In 2013, Janie completed introductory coaching sessions in scuba diving as part of the programme and she hasn’t looked back since. Janie, from Basildon Academy, is one of more than 17,000 young people whose
lives have been touched by the near £1million funding of Sportivate in Essex during the last four years. She has gone on to take part in the sport regularly and was awarded a scholarship from Orca Scuba Diving Academy to enable her to continue diving and become part of their team. The scholarship Janie received covered the cost of equipment and various courses, and she is now on her way to achieving the Master Scuba Diver qualification – the highest level in recreational diving. Janie said: “Scuba diving is amazing because it’s somewhere you can go to relax, be peaceful, to kind of change
how your day is. It has changed my life because of the fact that I used to be shy, really anxious. I used to stress about every little thing. “Now I am so confident. I can have a conversation with people without really knowing them. I never used to be able to look people in the eye. It makes me feel good to be able to do that now.” Sportivate is the national programme of Sport England and is funded by the National Lottery and delivered locally by Active Essex, the county sports partnership for the county.
