NE of the oldest country shows in England is all set to entertain and delight the residents of Essex again with a host of attractions and displays that will appeal to all members of the family both young and old. Taking place on Saturday, September 5, between 9.00am and 5.00pm at the Orsett Showground, Rectory Road, Orsett, this year’s show will be the 109th, making it one of the oldest oneday country shows in England.

Set in 30 acres of scenic countryside in the village of Orsett, the annual Orsett Show is a great day out with attractions for all the family and is one of the most popular family event in Thurrock. AN IMPRESSIVE 27 car parks in Southend have just won the prestigious Park Mark award - the Oscars of the car parking world. Last year, 24 car parks in the borough gained the award, but this year another three have now earned their place on the leader board. These are Essex Street, Southchurch Park East and Thorpe Bay Broadway. Park Marks are awarded to each car park which achieves the challenging demands of the Safer Parking Scheme. This is a national

Essex opera star judges singing competition

AMES Edwards is an established and much-loved opera tenor. He will be returning to his home town of Southend to judge the Freda Parry Scholarship singing competition which he won himself in 1995. The 2015

competition takes place on September 5, at Southend High School for Boys. Madam Freda Parry, OBE, cousin of Sir Hubert Parry lived in Southend from the age of 6. Later, she studied singing under Herman Klein and conducting under Sir Henry Wood. She soon developed a flair for choir training and in pre-war days the Freda Parry Choir, composed largely of her own pupils, became well known. The high competitive awards won by her choirs throughout the country brought honour to Southend. Freda died in 1971 and the Scholarship was established in 1973 in order to assist young singers hoping to follow a professional singing career. The Scholarship value now stands at £1,200 and is open to those living in the County of Essex who are under the age of 29. Candidates are asked to prepare a short programme consisting of four songs: an opera or concert aria, an aria from an oratorio or other sacred work, a German Lied or French Mélodie and a British or American Art

Song. Many of the past recipients of the Scholarship have gone on to pursue professional singing careers becoming successful performers and teachers in their own right. As a operatic soloist James Edwards travels the UK and has worked with The Royal Opera House Covent Garden, English National Opera, Welsh National Opera Orchestra and the BBC Symphony Orchestra to name but a few. This Autumn he returns to Southend-on-Sea to perform with the London Concert Orchestra for Raymond Gubbay’s ‘Last Night of the Autumn Proms” at the Cliffs Pavilion on Saturday November 15. Essex Country Parks flying the flag GREEN flags are now flying at Cudmore Grove and Belhus Woods Country Parks. Retaining their awards for the ninth and seventh year, the southerly park landscape of Belhus Woods and the northern Country Park, Cudmore Grove, have been awarded Green Flags for 2015. The national award, given by environmental charity Keep Britain Tidy, recognises and rewards the best parks and green spaces across the country. SOUTHEND-on-Sea Borough Council’s Museum Service is looking for local veterans in the Southend area as part of a major project to gather their experiences. The team will be collating the experiences of local veterans to create a portrait and audio history exhibition at the museum, and to be permanently archived at the Essex Records Office. Four daring school workers will be putting their bravery skills to the test next month when they freefall from 12,000ft at 120mph. Francesca Ingram, 27, Sarah Polden, 34, Christopher Goldsmith, 28, and Daniel Wilson, 23 who all work at Whybridge Infant School in Rainham will take part in a tandem skydive to raise money for Saint Francis Hospice. The team who are calling themselves The Whybridge Jumpers signed up after reading about the exhilarating experience in the hospice’s fundraising pack. “I have always wanted to do a skydive and when I read about it, I thought it would be a great chance to do a jump and raise money for charity,” said Francesca, a Year One teacher. Reception teacher Christopher Goldsmith said: “Saint Francis Hospice is local to our school and our community. We have known friends and people from different areas who have been at the hospice. It is about raising money as well as raising awareness of the hospice.”

The refurbishment involved replacing all floor tiles throughout the pool hall, fitting new boilers and filtration systems to heat and clean the 650 tonnes of water that fill both pools, and installing new showers, sinks and cubicles in the men’s and women’s changing rooms. Maintaining a high standard of facilities is very important for the Sports Centre since it’s used by hundreds of local residents, members and independent school students throughout the year. Sports Centre Manager, Paul Morgan, said: “Our swimming pool is one of our most popular facilities so it was crucial that the refurbishment was carried out to ensure that our customers enjoy the best facilities we can offer them. We’re really pleased with the work that’s taken place over the last six weeks and we’re sure our members will enjoy the improvements.” Sports Centre member, Oliver Adams, said: “The wait was definitely worth it, the work they’ve done in the changing rooms looks great and the swimming pools look really smart.” The swimming pool refurbishment comes almost

three years after the opening of the centre’s Strength and Conditioning room by Olympic Medallist, Samantha Murray. The £110,000 project provided members with a separate facility for a more extensive selection of resistance-based equipment - including a variety of weighted barbells and dumbbells, a squat rack, a stretching cage, a dip and pull up frame and several resistance machines. The completion of the swimming pool refurbishment marks the start of the Sports Centre’s August offer which gives new joiners half-price membership for their first two months. just a helping hand Building positive relationships through therapy, opportunity, love and care. Kids Inspire empowers young people in Essex to become valued members of society. Pixie Lott with Sue Bell

IDS Inspire was set up by Chelmsford resident Sue Bell, to fill the gaps between health and council services. It has grown rapidly since September 2006 and helps many children across Essex, all year round. Children and young people need security, stability, love and encouragement. Sadly as many as 1.5 million youngsters are estimated to suffer abuse each year but only 550,000 are referred to social services. Overworked care departments are allocating a social worker to only 35,100 of these. Poverty and neglect affects every community. There is a huge demand for Kids Inspire’s services. Since 2006 they have been inundated with requests for help from families, schools and support organisations and now provide varying degrees of support for many young people and their families. At the heart of everything they do is the belief that “if we are to have a healthy society, then we must provide young people with

the inspiration to become fully engaged with society.” Kids Inspire encourages children through arts, sports, enterprise and work based learning, to find their talents. They also match volunteer adult mentors with young people to enable them to establish positive relationships with a trusted adult, helping to heal the wounds of neglect, abuse and trauma.

Seven year-old Kate lives in Chelmsford and is not yet at junior school. She is just 7 years old but has already attempted suicide by morphine overdose. Social care closed the case as they felt that her Dad is doing his best. School noticed that Kate had become more and more withdrawn and they made contact with Kids Inspire who are helping her to get back on track. Caitlin Barnes-Davis was a Chelmsford County High pupil: “Kids Inspire saved my life. They listened and helped me to understand.”

These are just two of many success stories but Kids Inspire has to turn away three or four children every week due to lack of funding. They also need adult volunteers who can mentor a vulnerable young person and become a listening ear. Kids Inspire’s mentoring programme is an invaluable service. It offers young people the chance to form a positive, trusting relationship with an adult role model – their mentor. Mentors undergo comprehensive training before being carefully matched to a young person. The two then meet, usually for an hour a week, while Kids Inspire provides continued support and guidance. The mentor engages the mentee in fun, everyday activities. This broadens the child’s horizons and helps them develop skills to deal with the issues affecting them. For three years Kids Inspire have also run a Kids Who Lunch Club in the school holidays for local youngsters who might otherwise miss out. There are

over 1900 children in Chelmsford who receive free school meals, and there is no provision during the school holidays for these families. Once a week they look after about 25 local children. They run art and craft activities, so children can have fun while enjoying the healthy food, and have at least one therapist in attendance to take up any issues arising. Since September 2013 Kids Inspire has also been working in partnership with The GROW Project. A wonderful opportunity for all concerned to provide educational and therapeutic support to students and their families. The GROW Project ensures an inclusive range of education provision for primary aged children with Behavioural, Emotional and Social

Difficulties. The project provides the student with a curriculum planned for their individual needs whilst modeling good adult relationships which encourage the student to begin to trust and learn. Kids Inspire’s input in to the project is to provide holistic therapeutic support within each unit. The emphasis of the intervention is that there “is always a back” for the targeted children, their parents and the referring schools. This Christmas, Kids Inspire will once again launch their Christmas Appeal providing a Christmas gift for a child in Essex who may go without during the festive period. Some of these children may be living in care, neglected, living with a parent with a mental health issue or simply in a family who has fallen

on hard times. Gold medal winner Fatima Whitbread MBE had this to say about the appeal:“I have always believed in giving you will receive...help others and spread a little love! I myself lived in Children’s homes for 14 years and most of our toys and clothes were gifted to us and used communally. Rhodes… I TS abundant beaches, wooded valleys and ancient history have long made it a favourite holiday destination. Remnants from the Roman Empire, the Byzantines, Ottomans and Italians are all in evidence across the island, but it was the rule of the Crusaders and the Knights of St John with their building boom in the fifteenth century, which makes Rhodes unique.

1. Explore The Knights Quarter Fantastically evocative of

a bygone era and designated as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO, Rhodes Old Town has a medieval heart with pretty cobbled streets, monumental buildings and 12m thick city walls. Most of the medieval sights are in the Knights Quarter in the Old Town. Walk up the Avenue of the

Knights where the Knights used to live and were ordered in accordance to their place of origin. Pass the Inn of the Order of the Tongue of Italy, the Palace of Villiers de I’sle Adam, the Inn of France, Chapelle Française, Inn of Provence and Inn of Spain. Near the end of the avenue is the church St John of the Collachio, which originally had a secret passage to the Palace of the Grand Master. This truly magnificent 14th century palace was rebuilt by the Italians after it was severely damaged in the mid1800s.

Rhodes is the largest of the Dodecanese Islands – 50 miles long from north to south. It sits in the East of the Mediterranean only 27 miles from Turkey. Inside 24 of 158 rooms can be visited. Price 6 euros The monumental Hospital of the Knights built in 1440 – and now the Archaeological Museum - was one of the Crusader complexes that transformed the city. Its biggest draw inside is a 1st century marble statue of Aphrodite bathing, but it also houses finds from Rhodes and the surrounding islands that stretch back 2,000 years. Ticket prices 6 euros for adults, free entrance for children under 18. Mandráki, the ancient harbour, is the most iconic feature of Rhodes with the three old windmills, fortifications and two bronze deer at the end of the dock. This was where the ancient Colossus was also said to have stood astride. 2. Have a Turkish Bath The other parts of Old Rhodes Town include the Jewish Quarter with its quiet, intriguing backstreets and the Hora, which is often referred to as the Turkish Quarter. As well as appealing cafes, restaurants and shops, it also houses one of the few tangible legacies of Turkish rule, Hammam or the Municipal Baths/Turkish Baths. The building has been fully renovated and is one of only two working complexes in Greece. Inside it has a

star-pierced dome above the central hot room, chambers with marble floors and private wash chambers. It also displays Moorish hydromechanics with underfloor pipes carrying water, heated by olive wood fires. 3. Cycle the City Rhodes Town has introduced automated shortterm bike sharing stations in five central locations in the city, which makes for a fun way to explore the city, . 4. Go to the Beach Rhodes Island is full of long sandy beaches, many of them with great facilities but some which are secluded and empty. Highlights include: Elli Beach. This is Rhodes Town’s own beach, located in the northernmost point of the island just in front of

the Art Deco Aquarium - and legendary Casino. This is an extremely popular beach, with calmer water and more facilities on the eastern side. The Aquarium is a landmark at the northern most point of the island, designed and built by the Italians and combining local and Art Deco styles. Inside you will find a cave like tunnel of rocks with an underwater atmosphere and local sea life in abundance. rhodes-aquarium.hcmr.gr. Faliraki Beach. This is a sandy beach, lying in front of some of the most luxurious resorts on the island to the north-east. Visitors can enjoy plenty of beach bars and watersports.

It is at its strongest in mid summer when the weather is at its hottest. Normally the wind will build during the day, from Force 2 or 3 in the morning to Force 4 to 6 by mid to late afternoon at its peak. Prasonisi. Situated at the southernmost tip of the island, the dramatic Prasonisi beach is made up of two coves on the east and west side of the island split by an island you can reach on foot or by swimming. The west side is a paradise for windsurfers and surfers - and the east has calmer waters. Even if you aren’t a surfer, visit to enjoy the dramatic landscape. Ixia beach. Wine tasting Embona in the hilly interior of the island is known for its wine and olive oil production and is also the first area in Greece to produce a ‘Methode Champenoise - sparkling wine made from the Athiri grapes. The Emery vineyard is family run and established in 1923 and now one of the oldest wine and spirit producers in Greece. Tsambika Beach. This beautiful, long sandy beach is surrounded by a magnificent pine forest and has umbrellas, sun beds and beach bars. Just north of Tsambika beach, perched at 300m with commanding coastal views including of Lindos, is the tiny Byzantine church dedicated to Our Lady – or the Monastery of Tsambika, which is well worth a visit.

Lindos Beach. Situated in a small bay with white sand and shallow emerald waters, this beach has an amazing view to the ancient Acropolis. Kalathos Beach. The vast beach stretches along the shore for 4 kilometres along the south east coast. Tavernas and shops run alongside for all your beach needs. Anthony Quinn Beach. This beach’s original name was Vagies, but it played a significant part in the film ‘The Guns of Navarone’ after which it was named after the actor. It is a small bay with cool crystal green waters

Kritinia. The ruined 16th century castle of Kritinia is situated on a pine-clad hill with awe inspiring views along the coast and across to the island of Halki.

Family gives Tutti thumbs up!

AMILY eating out occasions can be funny affairs; well they can if you want to eat delicious food rather than visit a fast-food outlet or sit in a restaurant that doesn’t also contain a soft play area. So for our daughter’s ninth birthday we decided to try somewhere different. We jumped in the car and headed out to Tutti Grille at Freeport Braintree, says HILARY COLLINS. It was only 5.30pm when we arrived but the restaurant was already starting to get busy, we were quickly welcomed by our waiter and shown over to our booth which easily sat our little party of five. The kids were very keen to take a look at the menu and as their favourite is pizza they were more

than happy to opt for three margaritas with added black olives. However when us adults got to take a look at the kids menu it was a real revelation; Tutti offered mini steaks, pork chops, grilled chicken served with mash potatoes and veggies of the day. It was another one of those times that I wished my kids weren’t fussy eaters and would scoff the very best of what Tutti had to offer. The dining menu is new and exhaustive with the choice on offer. We plumped for the Aubergine Fritto (£5.75) served with garlic

Whilst I sipped my pimped up Prosecco – with added amaretto, vodka and strawberries – I plumped for the Fritta Misto di Mar (£15.75) which proved a plentiful portion of fresh salmon chunks, prawns, haddock and calamari served with string fries and dressed leaves. My husband chose the Goat’s Cheese and Caramelised Onion Tart (£10.50) which was homemade with light filo pastry with sautéed onions topped with goat’s cheese. He’s a vegetarian and a fussy eater too like the kids but this dish was deemed ‘delicious’ and his plate was clean faster than the kids. For desserts we all decided we deserved a treat; it was

my daughter’s birthday after all! We were tempted to share the Amore Tutti Sundae (£14.95) which included nine flavours of ice cream, profiteroles, strawberries and chocolate and strawberry sauce. However we were already feeling rather full so opted to share the Strawberry Delizia (£5.95) which was a sculptural tasty delight of skewered strawberries a top vanilla scooped ice cream. All in all we had a great evening out. Tutti had it all covered, even if the kids had got restless there was ample colouring in at the table and also a very impressive magic trick from one of the waiters that go us all guessing, how did he do that? A food journey full of adventure

KARIN RIDGERS spoke to founder Kate Lewis to find out more about this unconventional foodie experience that will guarantee you a night to remember! So Kate, tell us a little about you. I’ve trained as a Mime (don’t speak!), been a music agent, managed bands, produced theatrical and PR events, worked at festivals, worked with artists in many of Britain’s prisons and arts venues, trained as an acupuncturist, trained as a journalist, restored a couple of old buildings, now own a pub with my husband (The Royal Oak Tetbury, Gloucestershire) and am sort of on course to be indulgent and open the first Asparagasm café restaurant in late summer this year. What inspired you to go veggie/ vegan? We were very much a salad and jacket potato family growing up and I disliked meat and fish quite a lot anyway. I was a child of the Heinz generation too. So orange stuff in cans sat alongside fresh homecooked food that my Mum was great at. Leaving home to study I was attracted to campaigning groups and politicised people who inspired me and gave me the confidence as well as the rationale

Offering diners extremely classy, pop up vegan restaurants in the East End of London, Asparagasm is the brain child of vegan Kate Lewis launched in July 2012 to be able to live and express what I knew in me to be right. My introduction to vegetarianism was when I had just left university at 18 after following a French, Film and Theatre Studies degree. During these formative years the mystery and magic of the health food shop and complementary and alternative health was revealed and I have remained always keen and curious to learn about how one can live better as well as support all life forms be it animal, vegetable and mineral, along the way. So how and why did Asparagasm come to fruition? As an event consultant and producer I had previously worked with the founders of Disappearing Dining Club, Stuart Langley and Chef Fredrik Bolin, who were at the vanguard of the dreaded word

‘pop-ups’. They were really good at organising fresh and original shared dining experiences that I loved the look and style of but didn’t eat at. We discussed together my ideas for Asparagasm and what I wanted to do and how I could mirror their production values and share resources and challenge their amazing chefs to fulfil my food dreams. They were very supportive and in July 2012 we started small at their Back In 5 Minutes restaurant in Brick Lane and then soon I was able to access their great spaces and emulate the community sharing style dining events at vegan fine dining events that were styled with an Asparagasm twist. What can one expect when coming along to an Asparagasm night? A great welcome and an introduction to a fantastic mix of people. These are nights to be enjoyed, deliciously and freely and engaging with people is the essence of the experience. Friendships have been made, people come again, and there is a wonderful community at each sitting. There’s five courses of superbly cheffed food to enjoy, starting with an amuse (to be said in an extended faux French accent), a starter, the main dish, a dessert and either a palette cleanser or more recently a slate of nut-cultured artisan vegan ‘cheeses’ which Asparagasm is developing for the restaurant and artisan markets with chef Paul

Foster. The dessert brings surprises in the shape of a happening or an explosion of entertainment. We’ve had a chthonic crooner, a vegetable orchestra, burlesque tease, magicians and fire breathing animatronic horses - amongst others. The combination of all these elements rapturously coming together is the fun and furious purpose of a yee-hah vegetable loving, plant worshipping Asparagasm!

Are they just held in London at the moment? To date they have all taken place in the capital and specifically East London as there are still great spaces there that are fairly affordable and not over commercialised. And my Mum lives there! Whats your favourite vegan dish? How could I choose? I always

It won favourite beer at the London Vegan Beer Fest 2014 just two weeks after it had first been bottled! That was great! I’d like to think we can curate more experiences to enjoy at home. And finally – how did you get this super name?? My husband and I went to South Africa to visit friends in 2012. For my vegan dining satisfaction I wanted to try out Planet Restaurant in Cape Town where the sommelier inspired me with regards to the five-course vegan food tasting and wine pairing concept they offered. This soon followed in Franschhoeck at a dinner cooked by Mahki Maki. It was an artistic salad and cucumber nori style wrapped pureed asparagus dish freaking out with other edible foliage. It looked absolutely out of this world, better than I can explain. So, when I bit in and the juicy asparagus schpoofed in my mouth I had a really funny turn. It was so so good. ‘What are you doing?’ – my reply. ‘I’m having an aparagasm’. I hope that a few or several or many people in life join me in having one! Could you give us a couple of style ideas - when wearing the shoes what do they look good with? For summer I think the loafers look great with white, coloured jeans or trousers/chinos for both men and women. They also look great with a slim pair of jeans and a nice loose fitting casual shirt. A lot of our male customers also wear the loafers with shorts and a polo shirt which I often wear myself.

Top tips on beating irritated skin

LTHOUGH the environment and genetics play their part, our lifestyles can make the problem much worse. Simple changes to routine can help break the scratch-itch cycle and give you back your glow.

Here are some top tips to help you beat irritated skin: 1) Don’t over cleanse: Our skin has a protective barrier called an ‘acid mantle’ made up of natural oils, which help lock in moisture, and block pollution and bad bacteria. Soaps, strong facial toners or over-washing can damage this, particularly on the face and even if you have oily skin! 2) Banish bacteria from your bathroom: Old razors can be breeding grounds for bacteria, which can lead to irritation and scratching. It’s best to change them regularly and to never share with partners

or housemates. The same goes for sponges and flannels – cleaning your body with your hands is always more hygienic.

3) Spring clean your make-up bag: Bacteria can also breed in your make-up bag: generally the life-span is six months for facial liquids, two years for face powders – but a shorter shelf life of just three months for mascara and liquid eyeliner! To prolong their life, never store your beauty products in the bathroom as the humidity can increase bacteria growth. 4) Play detective with ingredients: Do your bath and beauty products any contain nasties which could be irritating your skin? Watch out for perfumes, colorants, preservatives and alcohol: generally less is more when it comes to ingredients! Watch out for less common culprits like the dye in your toilet tissue, whitener in sanitary products and biological washing powder.

Consider wearing cotton gloves at night to stop yourself scratching in your sleep. Essex on the big screen Lights, camera, action!

FOCUS ON

UR county has long been a favourite of film producers and has featured in some big box office hits where you might not even realise it is Essex you are seeing. Here’s some places you can visit that have starred on the big screen… The Woman in Black – Osea Island. The island in the River Blackwater (5 miles off Mersea Island) is connected to the north bank of the river by a causeway which is covered at high tide, and in 2012 it was the setting for the Hammer Horror film The Woman in Black. Coalhouse Fort Harry Potter star Daniel Radclifffe plays Arthur Cripps, a young lawyer who visits spooky Eel March Island (which is also cut off from the mainland by the tides) in order to arrange it’s sale after the death of its owner. James Bond: Goldfinger – London Southend Airport. A British United Air Ferries Carvair is seen transporting villain Goldfinger and his car in the 1964 James Bond film from Southend Airport to Geneva. In the scene, filmed in 1963, Sean Connery as Bond drives his Aston Martin DB5 into Southend Airport (having tracked Goldfinger’s Rolls Royce to the airport – the first use of what

would become Sat Nav on screen), and takes it to Switzerland in pursuit of Goldfinger via the Carvair service. Ivanhoe - Hedingham Castle. The Norman motte and bailey castle has often been the location for films and TV programmes. It was mostly notably featured in Ivanhoe, the 1997 BBC TV mini-series of Sir Walter Scott’s novel set in 1192 AD about a disinherited knight who is accused of treachery in the Crusades starring Steve Waddington, Susan Lynch, Ciaran Hinds and Christopher Lee. Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade – Tilbury. The third of the Indiana Jones trilogy starring Harrison Ford and Sean Connery which sees them set off in search of the Holy Grail, takes our hero Indy to Venice. Although the Venice waterfront starts out as the real backdrop, we’re soon back in Essex, with the high-speed chase through the waterways of the Italian city actually being filmed around Tilbury Docks.

Batman Begins- Coalhouse Fort. In this 2005 reboot of the caped crusader, the ‘Bhutanese’ prison in which Bruce Wayne (Christian Bale) hits rock-bottom before being found by Henri Ducard (Liam Neeson), is actually Coalhouse Fort in East Tilbury. The Victorian fort, built around 1870, was intended to protect London from French invaders and now stands in a pleasant green park on the north bank of the Thames, protected by its moat. NOWN for selling reliable, functional and budget-priced cars, Hyundai has over the last few years progressively refreshed its model range, replacing a somewhat sombre line-up with cars that now have a splash of style and a measure of sophistication. Latest to receive this transformation is the midsized B-segment i20, which competes with the likes of the Volkswagen Polo, Ford Fiesta and Vauxhall Corsa. Designed and built in Europe, this new generation i20 is only available as a practical five door, and increases in body size all-round makes it bigger than most of its competitors and these extra millimetres have paid dividends with interior space making it a spacious and genuine five-seater. Boot space benefits too with 326 litres of space to heighten the i20’s versatility and has a variable height floor. On test was the mid-range SE model, powered by a 1.2-litre engine developing 83bhp, mated to a five-speed gearbox and comes with an on the road price of £12,725. The use of soft-touch materials and splashes of piano black and chrome inserts for the interior certainly give it a premium look and feel when first getting in. The seats are supportive with enough padding and lumbar support and

the dash is clear and concise. The steering wheel is complete with audio, phone and cruise control functions is leather covered and has a nice chunky feel to it. The top of the dash features a mounting that allows you to harness your smartphone’s navigation, and fairly effective it is too. It’s just a pity it doesn’t look that attractive when your phone is in your pocket. Out on the road the ride is pliant, with a commendable ride with excellent suppression of wind noise not disturbing the ambience. The steering is a little on the light side and sometimes lack a bit of feel when cornering enthusiastically but is something you soon get used to. The engine is slightly lacking in get-up-and-go, which is reflected in a tardy 0-60 time of 13.1

seconds. Get on a long incline it soon runs out of puff, but around town it performs much better. A new, more modern turbocharged 1.0-litre engine is coming soon, which should improve matters. Over the course of the road test the 1.2-litre engine returned a fuel consumption figure from the on board computer of 44.7 mpg (official figure is 55.4 mpg) and the CO2 level is 119g/ km, which puts it in the £30 bracket for annual road tax. The Hyundai i20 range has been fitted with a number of new technologies that provide levels of comfort normally associated with largevehicle segment cars. For example, on this SE spec car, standard equipment includes Lane Departure Warning, cruise control with speed limiter, rear parking sensors, tyre pressure monitoring system and Bluetooth with voice recognition. Further up the range panoramic glass sunroof, heated steering wheel, cornering headlights,

automatic defog system, front and rear parking sensors are firsts for Hyundai B-segment vehicles. Safety items include six airbags comprising front, front seat side and curtain, lane departure warning, anti-lock brakes, electronic stability programme, hill-start assist, vehicle stability management and emergency stop signal. Convenience items are air con, electric windows front and rear, cruise control with speed limiter, leather wrapped steering wheel and gear knob, remote central locking and stereo RDS radio with CD player with MP3 compatibility. All in all the new generation Hyundai i20 is a thoroughly likeable car. It is comfortable to be in, nice to drive with excellent road manners and enough kit on board to keep most people happy. Kristensen at Revival THE most successful driver in the history of the Le Mans 24 Hours, Tom Kristensen, will return to the Goodwood Revival for the first time in two years on September 11-13, and will be joined by at least six other winners of the classic French endurance race as part of a sensational driver line-up. Kristensen, 48, took a record nine victories at Le Mans between 1997 and 2013, and is already a winner at the

Revival, having taken victory in the RAC Tourist Trophy Celebration race in 2011 in a Shelby Cobra Daytona shared with Indianapolis 500 winner Kenny Brack. This year he is aiming for a second TT victory in the race featuring over £150million worth of closed-top GT cars from 1960-64 and will be behind the wheel of the unique 1963 Lister Coupe formerly raced by touring car legend Anthony Reid at Goodwood. Joining the Dane will be at least six other legendary sportscar drivers who can list 10 more Le Mans victories between them. Italian Emanuele Pirro, a fivetime Le Mans victor and a race winner at the 2008 Revival in an Austin Healey 100S, is another to confirm his participation at the Revival and is set to race in both GT cars and saloons. Richard Attwood, who kicked off Porsche’s record run of Le Mans victories in 1970 in the legendary Salzburg 917K, also

returns. Attwood is one of the Revival’s most successful competitors, the F1 podium finisher having won eight races at the event in single-seater and GT machinery, most recently behind the wheel of a BRM P261 in the 2010 Glover Trophy. Jackie Oliver, whose win at La Sarthe came a year before Attwood’s, sharing a Ford GT40 with Jacky Ickx in what remains the closest competitive finish in Le Mans history, has also tasted victory at the Revival – in the St Mary’s Trophy in 2011 in a BMW 1800TiSA – and returns for another crack at success. Three winners from the Group C era will also join the fray, with Revival regulars Andy Wallace, Jochen Mass and Mark Blundell, Le Mans winners in 1988, ’89 and ’92 respectively, all set to race in the St Mary’s Trophy for 1960s production saloons. Many more legendary drivers and riders of past and present will be announced in the run up to the Revival, with Formula 1, Indycar, sportscar, touring car, MotoGP, Superbike and road racing all set to be represented.

Two-thirds admit to not taking rest breaks on long journeys AS MANY as 65% of drivers on long journeys do not to stop to take rest breaks on the motorway because they don’t feel they have any need to. While 79% of drivers will only choose to stop and take a rest if a motorway service area is located in a convenient place on their journey. The findings come from a recent survey conducted by road safety charity the Institute of Advanced Motorists (IAM), in which 1,753 people took part during June 2015. The poll asked to what extent keeping hydrated and taking a break between long journeys is important to drivers and found many respondents did not consider taking a rest break essential. Findings further reveal that while many drivers prepare for a long journey beforehand – filling up their cars with fuel (85%) or programming in a destination into their satnavs (over 60%), only 50% of drivers will plan to make arrangements to stop at a service station.

An existing driving simulator study conducted by Loughborough University showed that even mild dehydration can be hazardous to drivers, suggesting it can have the same effect on someone that is driving while under the influence of drinks and drugs in terms of driver errors made – affecting mood, mental functioning and changes in level of concentration. Other major reasons as to why drivers do not consider taking a motorway break include: deeming the price of fuel at service stations too expensive (56%) or citing that food, drinks and snacks at service stations are considerably overpriced (45%). For drivers who do have a reason to stop at a motorway service station, over 94% have said they only stop to use the toilet facilities. In fact, over a third of respondents consider a toilet break very important on long distance routes and 75 % would welcome more frequent continental style picnic and toilet only rest areas.

ESPITE being a very difficult weekend for selection, it was a very positive one. On Saturday, the top three sides won comfortably and the fourths and fifths acquitted themselves well. The first team turned in a thoroughly professional performance with bat and ball as they completed an eight-wicket win over Buckhurst Hill. Sam Cook’s early excellence was built on by Ollie Devenish who claimed four wickets. Dan Hagen (79) played very well in the chase with Jack Sterland in sparkling form and Nick Prowting playing securely. For the third time this season, the seconds won at home before tea, the victims this time were Woodford Wells. Paul Jones picked up three for 6 and Tom Halsey mesmerised four batsmen

as the visitors totalled 84. Gary Chidley and Jack Moss knocked the runs off without loss. An excellent win for the thirds at Woodford Wells suddenly thrust them right back into the title race. Alistair Fergus picked up six wickets as Wells were restricted to 162. Connor Cheverall played nicely with an unbeaten 74 as the target was achieved inside 25 overs, three wickets down. There was no lack of runs in the fourth team game with South Woodford. The visitors amassed 314 for four, Ali Khan (90), Shahab Umer (52) and Farhan Salahudeen (100*) putting the bowlers to the sword. After losing the toss and being asked to field, Sam Cook continued his impressive ability to take early wickets, taking advantage of some movement to take two. Mark Drain bowled a luckless spell at the other end, but it soon became apparent that the pitch was a good batting track and wickets were going to be hard to get. The early introduction of spin in the form of Karamat Ali created an early chance that was sadly missed, a trend that worryingly continued as opener Beckett was dropped a further two times. Ben Clifford bowled an extremely disciplined spell and was rewarded as a long hop was struck straight to Sam Cook at mid-wicket to provide the breakthrough. Beckett continued to ride his luck as he was dropped yet again and although scoring was slow and ground fielding excellent, it appeared that the fielding side had decided that taking catches was not on the cards today. IT WAS something of a surprise in a

second and held two excellent catches to give Mark Drain two wickets. With Ollie Devenish (2-19) also taking a brace, the innings was in tatters at 33 for six. Captain Lee Cranmer held back Halsey for some reason but when he came on, he weaved his usual spell conceding five runs in two overs and taking a wicket with Harry Green. Halsey was withdrawn but Cranmer was proved correct in his decision as Drain (4-11) polished off the last two batsmen.

A few early drives had fielders wringing their hands or happy that the ball had been wide of them. Stephen Drain bowled well though and was unlucky that Robert Rollins was dropped from a sharp chance to slip. Rollins failed to build on his reprieve though as he left a straight ball from Alistair Fergus, who then had the new batsmen caught playing an expansive drive first ball. When Drain followed that up by having the experienced Duncan Richards caught behind, the score was 21 for three. Dominic Hurst began to dominate proceedings, looking like a very accomplished player. However, none of the middle order seemed content to support him and launched a series of big shots, gifting three more wickets to Fergus. Once again, Drain was unlucky as Hurst was dropped but he too failed to take advantage, Chris Drain taking an excellent catch to end his innings at 51, a sixth wicket for Fergus (6-51). From 77 for six and on a small boundary, a very early finish looked possible. Wilson dug in though, playing an intelligent innings. The last wicket pair eked out another 28 runs in frustrating fashion, with Wilson reaching an unbeaten 50.

A score of 83 looked totally inadequate but Wickford fought hard in the field and made a breakthrough in the first over. Gary Chidley took an aggressive approach and struck some boundaries in making 33 before an excellent catch saw him off. Jack Moss played steadily as is his wont, whilst Ben Clifford played freely and they reduced the requirement to single figures before Clifford was out. Rob Hayto came in to join Moss and those two calmly gathered the last runs for victory.

Stephen Drain returned and deservedly took the final wicket to finish with two for 40. A rush of extras and boundaries had the reply racing, David Thrift and Connor Cheverall passed 50 inside 5 overs. A change of bowling reduced the rate though and Wilson dismissed Thrift (33). Cheverall became slightly stuck for a period but then found his range again. N ENTERTAINING 2-2 draw on the opening day of the new Vanarama National League South season saw City take the lead on two separate occasions, but in total they lead the game for less than three minutes as Oxford quickly equalised on both occasions in a game that also saw a penalty for each side saved. Hugo Skepelhorn would open up his account for the season with City’s first attempt on goal, only for Alehandro Adrian to equalise two minutes later, heading home a free kick. The Clarets would then go ahead once again in the second half when Billy Bricknell dug out a cross from the by line, and after Laurie Walker was unable to gather, Charlie Henry smashed the ball home. This lead would last less than a minute as Bradley Bubb would then audaciously beat Ashley Timms from the half way line straight from kick off, but he wasn’t able to beat Timms from 12 yards as his penalty was saved. Builders’ charity donation A LEADING Essex house builder has donated £1,000 to boost a charity set up in memory of a talented cricketer from Colchester. The Rob George Foundation has received the windfall from Persimmon Homes as part of its Communty Champions project, which will see a pot of £24,000 being given to support local groups and charities over the next 12 months. The charity was launched in memory of Rob George, a popular member of Colchester and East Essex cricket club who died aged 21 after a long fight with leaukaemia. Philip George, Rob’s father, said: “We are extremely grateful fo this generous donation from Persimmon.’’ “We will use the money to support other young people suffering with serious illnesses, or who are committed to sport or the performing arts, which we know is what Rob wanted.’’ Norman Sharpe, from Persimmon, said the Communty Champions initiative was a way of supporting people across every city, town and village

Graham looked certain to score City’s third only for Adrian to somehow clear off the line.

Brentwood’s first Premier match ends in defeat BRENTWOOD’S first Ryman Premier match ended in defeat after a close and entertaining opening day fixture at the Harry Abrahams Stadium. It looked as though the home side had sealed the points as early as the 16th minute by which time they had established a two-goal lead. Brentwood hit back though,

and Liam Hope could easily have taken a point with Tom Richardson denied an equaliser when he hit the foot of a post. The home side sprung out and took a fourth minute lead when Kyle Watson’s cross from the left was met

perfectly by Healey whose header found the top corner of the goal. Healey scored his second twelve minutes later. After these early shocks, Brentwood had to battle back into the game and they twice tested goalkeeper Bobby Smith. Smith palmed away a long cross from Dave Collins that looked destined for the far top corner and he then saved well from a Hope

header from another Collins cross. The deficit was reduced in the 37th minute. Mitch Hahn’s long throw was not cleared and Hope brought the ball down before slamming into the roof of the net. Richardson nearly earned a point right at the death after cleverly turning away from a defender only to be denied by the woodwork.

IN ONLY their second season, the newly established girls section of Chelmsford Cricket Club have been crowned London and South East regional champions – their second trophy of 2015. The “Willows” as they are affectionately known qualified for the regional finals of the Under 11 Lady Taverners soft-ball competition after winning the Essex tournament earlier this summer. Despite a close final game against Hutton CC the Willows were unbeaten throughout the day and went into the regional tournament, held at Wisbech cricket club recently. With three counties unable to field teams, the Willows were faced with just two opponents from Bedfordshire and Hertfordshire. The first

match pitted Chelmsford against Harpenden, and despite an early start to the day for the girls they were quickly into their stride. With some excellent early bowling from Mel Welch and Eleanor Stevens, combined with athletic fielding from Isabella Copeland and Jess Tuff, put Harpenden on the defensive from the outset. The Willows then went into bat with Zoe Good and Mel Welch who made a great start and by the time the final pairing of Darcie Cleaver and Beth Wright took to the crease Chelmsford were clear victors. The second game of the day Chelmsford batted first and raced to 300 with the loss of only two wickets, some excellent batting from Olivia Copeland and Eleanor

Stevens the highlight of the innings. The fearsome Willows bowling attack and fielding were too much for Luton Town & Indians, and with Zoe Good taking three

wickets in one of her overs, the opponents could only manage a net score of 202 from their 12 overs, meaning a convincing 98 run victory for the Willows.
